- 2015 Marc Bredif Classic Vouvray (Museum Release)Vouvray, Loire Valley, FRANCE$59. 99Bottle$719.88 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: Cork
The domaine of Marc Bredif is one of the most famous names in the Loire, renowned for the longevity and quality of their Vouvray. Established in 1893 under the name of Chateau les Roches it wasn't until 1919 when Marc Bredif took over from his uncle, that the name was changed to reflect the change in ownership.
Marc Bredif produces three levels of Vouvray, each with a greater degree of concentration and sweetness. Their Classic range is crisp and fresh in style, dry and refreshing. Occasionally they will also release this wine after 10 years in the cellar as a museum release. Grande Annee is their off-dry style released only once ready to drink, often 10+ years from harvest. Finally their Collection releases come from only the finest vintages, are medium-sweet, with a huge amount of intensity and concentration, and an enviable ability to develop further in the cellar.
2015 was a fantastic vintage for Vouray where both the dry and sweet wines excelled. The vintage was marked by warm and dry conditions, resulting in ripe, concentrated wines with good depth and structure with huge scope for both drinking now or cellaring.

The 2006 vintage in Vouvray was a distinctive year that particularly shone for sweeter wines, but it also produced some appealing dry and off-dry styles. A wet spring and a warm, stormy summer made for a challenging growing season, but careful vineyard management paid off. The early autumn humidity encouraged noble rot, leading to exceptional moelleux and liquoreux wines with rich, honeyed complexity and impressive depth. While acidity was generally lower than in more classic years, well-made dry and off-dry Vouvrays offered generous orchard and stone fruit flavors, a rounded texture, and early approachability, making them enjoyable both in youth and with moderate aging.

It's a real privilege to be able to taste a wine like this: aged, sweet Chenin from the Loire is a must-try style. This example isn't as sweet as something like a Sauternes or Tokaji, but it will still do a great job with cheeses at the end of a meal. It has a nougat aroma with a hint of chalkiness, while in the mouth it is intense and focussed. Flavours of dried pineapple, mango, honey and luscious tropical fruits sing out, balanced by a bright but well-integrated acidity. The finish is long and refreshing. This is from a legendary vintage and has the legs for another decade in the cellar; don't be shy, Chenin is renowned for its ability to age.

Here the nose also flirts with reduction though the underlying fruit is clearly ripe with wisps of citrus influence. William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Champs Gain 1er Cru is more reserved on the nose compared to the Chenevottes, touches of lemon rind and light fumé aromas. Quintessentially Chassagne, there are lovely orange pith and tangerine notes coming through towards the finish with a long spicy aftertaste tinged with crème brûlée. Excellent. Drink 2022 - 2040.

Neal Martin - VinousIt is important to pick Champs Gain at the right time, thinks Damien, as the lower slopes can easily get a bit ripe. Toasty barrel, good fruit behind, a bit betwixt and between, more complicated here to pull out the detail, more weight at the back and a yellower fruit, only lightly peachy. I am not finding it easy to make a judgement as to whether or not this actually is a touch too ripe, or it is just that the wine needs more time to come together. My rating may be a bit conservative her.

Aromas of strong petrol, rosemary oil and a whiff of the exotic in the form of dried apricot peel lead to dense, rich, full-bodied and succulent flavors that brim with dry extract before concluding in a firm, youthfully austere and sneaky long finish. This is really very good and particularly for its level. Drink 2026+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundFrom parcels situated on the village's alluvial fan that ripen preciously and are among the first to be harvested, Colin's 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Cuvée Margot bursts with aromas of apples, fresh peaches, honeycomb and warm bread. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and charming, with lively acids underpinning its sun-kissed core of fruit, it has turned out nicely.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Village "Margot", the name of this particular cuvée rather than the lieu-dit, comes from four parcels and is raised in 15% new oak. It has a well defined bouquet with orange pith and yellow plum aromas that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is full of energy with impressive depth, gorgeous orange zest and mandarin notes, almond and a little walnut. Very harmonious and very persistent on the finish, this punches well above its weight. Drink 2022 - 2036.

Neal Martin - VinousFrom 4 plots. Pale lemon and lime colour, quite a tight white fruit nose, suddenly at the back of the mouth arrives an explosion of fruit, quite tropical, but still defined mostly by very ripe apple. Genial, but unexpected. The fruit stays long in the mouth.

Touches of petrol and resin are present on the ripe and fresh white orchard fruit scents. There is very good volume and richness to the succulent and generously proportioned flavors that aren't especially elegant, but I do like the persistence on the mildly warm finale. Drink 2023+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundAromas of pear, peach and nutmeg introduce Colin's 2019 Bourgogne Chardonnay, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and charming wine that's underpinned by ripe acids. As usual, it's derived from vines in the communes of Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet and Saint-Aubin. Drink 2020 - 2030.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)The 2019 Bourgogne Chardonnay was the only cuvée bottled before my visit in September. It has an attractive bouquet, the 10% new oak just rounding out the light tropical tones. The palate is medium-bodied with light Golden Delicious and Clementine notes, moderate length with a fresh, slightly tangy finish. Drink 2020 - 2024.

Neal Martin - VinousClear pale yellow. Really electric chiselled and attractively reductive nose. Almost spicy, then the sandalwood, very good flesh in the middle. A mix from Bourgogne plots in Chassagne-Montrachet and St-Aubin, which seem to works well together. Long finish with a toasty note.

2020 Domaine Marc Sorrel Hermitage BlancHermitage, Northern Rhone, FRANCE$330. 00Bottle$3960.00 DozenABV: 15%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
Sorrel's "classic" white Hermitage comes essentially from les Greffieux. From 60-year-old Marsanne vines and set to spend a total of 18 months in older oak (nothing newer than four years), a barrel sample of the 2020 Hermitage Blanc was a thrilling joyride of honeyed white peaches and ripe pears. Full-bodied, rich and incredibly textural, it should be a beauty. Drink 2022 - 2035.

Joe Czerwinski - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)The classic 2020 Hermitage Blanc from Sorrel is 100% Marsanne aged 18 months in barrel. It reveals a light gold hue as well as beautiful aromatics of ripe quince, toasted almonds, minty herbs, and spices. Beautifully balanced on the palate, this medium to full-bodied effort has flawless balance, a focused, elegant, yet powerful mouthfeel, and a great finish. Count me impressed – I'd be a buyer.

The 2020 Hermitage Les Rocoules Blanc brings more richness and depth, with a similar quince, honeysuckle, green almond, and brioche-driven bouquet. It's a powerhouse on the palate and is full-bodied, deep, opulent, and viscous, with serious length. Despite all its richness and depth, it has a touch more purity and precision than the classic cuvée. It's another remarkable effort that's going to keep for two decades or more. Drink 2022 - 2043.

A killer white, the 2019 Duche D'Uzes Alba Dolia Blanc offers a beautiful nose of honeyed peach, lemon curd, white flowers, and toast. This carries to a medium-bodied, rounded, textured white with plenty of richness yet also a fresh, lively, elegant style that keeps you coming back to the glass.
