2019 Chateau Suduiraut (375ml) Pre-Arrival OfferSauternes, Bordeaux, FRANCE$55. 99Bottle$671.88 DozenClosure: CorkOther Reviews....
Composed of 94% Semillon and 6% Sauvignon Blanc harvested from the 17th of September to the 30th of October (three selective pickings in total), the 2019 Suduiraut is aging for 16-20 months in French oak barrels, 50% new. The alcohol came in at 14.1% with 130 grams per liter of residual sugar. Pale to medium lemon-gold colored, the nose is oh-so-tantalizing with intense notes of candied ginger, beeswax, fenugreek and crystalized citrus peel over a core of pineapple upside-down cake, honey coated almonds, pink grapefruit and peach preserves with a waft of musk perfume. The rich, concentrated palate explodes with spicy fireworks in the mouth, complementing the the exotic fruit and peach preserves layers, with a racy line to lend just enough lift, finishing with epic length and depth.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Wine AdvocateThe 2019 Suduiraut is dense, powerful and creamy. Pineapple, candied orange peel, spice, chamomile and passion fruit all run through this rich yet beautifully balanced Sauternes endowed with terrific freshness and tons of class. What I like most about Suduiraut is how it delivers superb flavor intensity and yet remains light on its feet. The 2019 is a gorgeous and totally compelling wine. Tasted two times.

Antonio Galloni - VinousThe 2019 Suduiraut was picked between 19 September and 30 October via three tries through the vines. Yields came in at just 7hl/ha after a meticulous sorting. It has a gorgeous bouquet of wild honey, quince, pineapple and passion fruit, with good levels of noble rot evident. The palate is unctuous on the entry. A powerful and intense Sauternes in the making with layers of honey, ginger and quince. You could almost describe the texture as "gloopy"! This is a superb Suduiraut with long-term potential.

Neal Martin - VinousDried-lemon and white-peach aromas with hints of tart. Full-bodied and medium-sweet with lemon tart flavor and a bright finish. Delicately sweet and vivid. Spicy and dried. Botrytis set late.

James SucklingThe flagship Sauternes, the 2019 Château Suduiraut is 94% Semillon and 6% Sauvignon Blanc brought up in 50% new French oak. A stunning bouquet of caramelized peach, orange marmalade, honey, lavender, and citrus pith gives way to a medium to full-bodied Sauternes with impressive sweetness, a rich, expansive mouthfeel, and a vibrant spine of freshness that keeps it lively and balanced.

Jeb DunnuckOn the bright, yellow, tropical side of the fruit range with lemon curd, caramelized corn, butter, candied orange rind and honeyed citrus accents. Medium-bodied, and sweet, but not overly so, this can also be used to pair with spicy and savory courses as a meal accompaniment. This is a good thing because people need to open more bottles of these sweet treats.

Crushing and pressing are carried out with a small crusher-de-stemmer and a very old family press. The must is transferred into terracotta amphorae and used French oak tonneaux. To start fermentation, a ‘pied de cuve’ of indigenous yeasts obtained from the same grapes is added. Fermentation normally takes 8–10 days and the wine is racked and aged on its noble lees in 15-hectolitre Slavonian oak barrels and terracotta amphorae. The wine is aged for about 2 years, after which it is racked and bottled without filtration.
Bright yellow straw colour with pale gold tinged edges and a watery hue. Pear and red apple skin aromas fill the nostrils with hints of lime, quince, fresh herbs and wet stone also evident. Delicious pear, lime and red apple skin flavours decorate the palate with a river stone like feel. Infusions of fresh herbs, delicate quince and almond characters linger through the dry finish. Brisk, energetic acidity concluding fresh and elegant.

2020 Clemens Busch Marienburg Fahrlay Terrassen Riesling Grosses GewachsMosel, GERMANY$199. 00Bottle$2388.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkClemens and Rita Busch are one of the pioneering organic, and now biodynamic, producers working in Germany. As the fifth generation winemaker at this estate, Clemens stopped using herbicides in 1976, then in 1984 he and wife Rita converted to organics. They were among the first in Germany to commit to organic viticulture and led the movement establishing an association of organic growers in 1986. The estate converted to biodynamics entirely in 2005, earning certifications from the EU and Respekt-Biodyn.
Based in Pünderich, almost all of the vines they work are on the slopes of the Marienburg, and unique for the Mosel, feature parcels planted on the three main colours of slate; blue, red, and grey. In the winery Clemens works with wild yeasts, and ferments mostly in very old 1000-litre barrels. Nothing is added to the wines at any stage, apart from a touch of sulphur at bottling. Most of the wines at the Busch estate are vinified dry, and they are rich, complex and often powerful. They age very beautifully, gaining in complexity and texture. However, the sweet and noble sweet wines from the estate are also impressive, ranking among the finest wines made anywhere on the Mosel.

The 2020 Marienburg GG Fahrlay Terrassen offers a clear and intense, warm and concentrated yet refined and flinty bouquet of weathered slate and iodine aromas intermingled with super ripe and juicy Riesling aromas. Refined and crystalline on the palate, with immediately salivating salinity, this is a very intense and concentrated, long and complex Riesling with iodine notes and crunchy tannins. A spectacularly good wine. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. Drink 2025 - 2050.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Aug 2022)Here comes the boss! The dense grapefruit, rosemary and thyme nose pulls you inexorably into the orbit of this rich and concentrated dry riesling that has enveloping, salty minerality. And, in spite of all this, it is laser-beam bright and has white-flower delicacy at the very deep finish. From 110-year-old vines. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.

Stuart Pigott - JamesSuckling.comThe 2020er Fahrlay Terrassen GG, as it is referred to on the main part of the label, was fermented spontaneously in traditional oak casks from fruit harvested in a prime terraced part of the blue-slate Fahrlay sector. It proves still remarkably backward and does not offer much beyond some wet stone and smoke at first. It takes a while (think days rather than hours) for the wine to open up and reveal its stunning nose made of cassis, fine spices, herbs, flowers, and subtly creamy smoke. The wine is beautifully juicy on the dry but not bone-dry palate and leaves a superbly airy and playful feel in the long finish. Everything is there for making a stunning wine at maturity. But this beauty will test one’s patience first. Drink 2028-2040.

Tons of floral honey, ripe grapefruit and candied ginger make this concentrated and succulent riesling Spätlese really stand out of the crowd in this field. Stuart Pigott - JamesSuckling.comThe 2020er Marienburg Riesling Spätlese, as it is referred to on the main part of the consumer label and with a golden capsule, was made from fruit picked at 96° Oechsle from a selection of partially (10%) botrytized fruit and was fermented down to fully sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a hugely backward and almost non-saying nose at first and the wine takes a while before revealing some faint scents of pear, melon, lemon zest, smoke, and a hint of whipped cream. However, it proves remarkably alluring on the palate where finely chiseled fruity and mineral flavors are beautifully wrapped into ripe yet zesty acidity. The finish is beautifully playful, deep, multi-layered, and refined. This modern-day equivalent of a clean Auslese GK from the 1990s is a true winner. Drink 2030-2050.

The 2020 Marienburg GG Fahrlay is pure, bright and fresh on the nose and, like the 2021, absolutely true to its terroir with its rocky blue slate. The ripe fruit of the 2020 vintage is obvious here but far from opulence or pure richness. Terroir and vintage are beautifully united here. Rich and juicy yet refined and very delicate on the palate, this is a beautifully textured and balanced, intense and concentrated Fahrlay with fine, saline acidity, fine tannins and these crunchy structural slate elements. 12% stated alcohol. The 2019 Marienburg GG Fahrlay is perfectly ripe and concentrated on the densely aromatic nose that intertwines ripe, intense and flinty fruit with fascinating notes of crushed stones and herbs, yet everything is already marvelously interwoven and balanced as well as pure, precise and crystalline, with lemon zest notes. Full-bodied, intense and crystalline on the palate, this is a rich, concentrated, perfectly ripe and aromatic Fahrlay with a long, intense, elegant, crystalline and persistently salty finish. This would be rich and bolder if there were no old vines in blue slate. This is an impressive wine that was bottled just a few days before I tasted it in September 2020. Drink 2025 - 2045.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Oct 2020)The 2019er Marienburg Fahrlay GG, as it is referred to on the main part of the label, was fermented spontaneously in traditional oak casks with fruit harvested in a blue slate part of the Marienburg vineyard. It offers a superbly engaging nose made of cassis, grapefruit zest, citrusy fruits, ginger, elderflower, fine spices, herbs, and smoke. The wine proves gorgeously packed with racy flavors and smoke on the intensely flavored palate and leaves a superbly playful feel of whipped cream, earthy spices, and grapefruit zest in the long and subtly smoky finish. This is a stunning dry Riesling in the making! Drink 2024-2034.

2019 Clemens Busch Marienburg Rothenpfad Riesling Grosses GewachsMosel, GERMANY$125. 00Bottle$1500.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkClemens and Rita Busch are one of the pioneering organic, and now biodynamic, producers working in Germany.

From 80- to 85+-year-old vines on red slate, the 2019 Marienburg GG Rothenpfad is pure, very fine and flinty on the crystalline and concentrated yet pure, complex and still reductive nose. Silky, round and very elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, crystalline, juicy, persistently salty and structured Rothenpfad with great elegance, intensity, warmth and balance. Impressive—and surely exceptional with fresh porcini. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. Drink 2025 - 2045.

Stuart Pigott - JamesSuckling.comThis opens with a gorgeous sense of herbal savouriness that blends into the savoury stoniness. Crushed yarrow and potentilla not only play on the nose but also seem to give savour to the salty, concentrated palate. That saltiness is utterly mouth-watering and appetizing, flowing, smooth but oh so stony and herbal. Over the years, bio-pioneer Busch really has forged his very own style from this rhyolite site. The fact that it gets more morning than afternoon sun preserves those gorgeous aromatics in warm vintages like these. A glorious wine. Drinking Window 2025 - 2050.

Anne Krebiehl MW - DecanterAromas of green and yellow fruit mix it with flinty minerality. The palate shows a little more fruit than the straight Marienburg, grapefruit with peel and pith, but without any tropical aspirations. Nuances of salt and quinine give an almost medicinal tang, but a generous texture makes the medicine go down without any resistance. Very cool, the essence of mineral Riesling. Drink 2021 – 2028.

Michael Schmidt - JancisRobinson.comThe 2019er Marienburg Rothenpfad GG, as it is referred to on the main part of the label, was fermented spontaneously in traditional oak casks from fruit harvested in an iron-rich part of the Marienburg vineyard. It offers a beautiful nose made of mirabelle, grapefruit zest, a hint of passion fruit, and melon, all wrapped into a dash of whipped cream, some spices, licorice, brown sugar, and lots of smoky elements. The wine is firm, hugely intense but also somewhat unyielding at this stage on the palate but hints already at greatness to come in the marvelously spicy, zesty, and engaging finish. JamesSuckling.comThe 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape Blanc is terrific and shows the crisp, vibrant style of the vintage yet still manages to bring plenty of richness and concentration. Ripe pears, peach, licorice, and white flowers all emerge on the nose, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a layered mouthfeel, and integrated acidity. Clos des Papes has white varieties in only three of its 24 vineyard parcels, but the resulting wine is a blend of all permitted varieties, in roughly equal proportions. The 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc is outstanding, offering up scents of pineapple and tangerine, coupled with floral overtones. Full-bodied but clean and zesty, it's somehow plump and rich, but paradoxically light and refreshing. I enjoy these wines young, but proprietor Paul-Vincent Avril opened a still-delicious 2001 during this visit, so there is an argument to be made for aging this wine. Drink 2021 - 2025.

The 2015 Clos Floridene Blanc from Denis and Florience Dubourdieu has a subtle but complex bouquet with scents of white peach, citrus fruit and a touch of patisserie. The palate is very well balanced and quite phenolic in the mouth, some lovely extract here imparting a slightly waxy texture. The acidity is keen and there is impressive tension and energy on the finish. It will drink young as usual, however, such is its complexity that I am more intrigued to discover how it will age. J.M. - Wine SpectatorOne of the great whites of Bordeaux, and in 2015 the lower acidity of the vintage is reflected in the dominance of forward, exotic apricot, nectarine and juicy peach fruit. 2021 Clos Haut Peyraguey (375ml) Pre-Arrival OfferSauternes, Bordeaux, FRANCE$39. 99Bottle$479.88 DozenClosure: CorkClos Haut-Peyraguey traces its origins to the seventeenth century, when it formed part of the same large Sauternes estate as Chateau Lafaurie-Peyraguey, before being separated in the late nineteenth century with the highest and best-situated parcels retained as Clos Haut-Peyraguey. The name Peyraguey, derived from the local word for hill, reflects its elevated position in the commune of Bommes, where the vineyard sits among the highest slopes of the appellation, close to Chateau d'Yquem. The 21-hectare estate, classified as a Premier Cru in 1855 and notable as the smallest of the top-ranked properties at the time, is planted predominantly to Semillon with a smaller proportion of Sauvignon Blanc on gravel, sand and clay soils. Vinification and ageing take place in French oak, with maturation in up to 50 percent new barrels, producing a classically structured Sauternes that reflects both its altitude and historic pedigree.
Other Reviews....
The 2021 Clos Haut-Peyraguey is a riveting Sauternes. Orange confit, lemon peel, white flowers, tangerine oil and mint soar across the palate. Exotic and floral overtones develop later, adding to the wine's sheer allure. Even with all of its plushness, the 2021 remains light on its feet. An explosion of heady aromas and flavors punctuates the dazzling finish. Sadly, brutal conditions wiped out most of the crop. Yields were a miserly 6-7 hectoliters per hectare. Drink 2028-2046.

2020 Colle Marianna SoaveSoave, ITALY$29. 99Bottle$359.88 DozenCellar: Drink now (2021)ABV: 12.5%Closure: StelvinComing from the commune of Ronca in the heart of Garganega country, Monte Ronca is a creation of local specialist, Antonio Fattori, an acknowledged Soave-master. Most the fruit for wines comes from the hills to the north of this commune, a specific site called Monte Calvarino, which peaks at 680 m (the inactive volcano from which the wine takes its name). At this altitude, this beautiful cool site provides a perfect environment for a higher grade, single site Soave. The hills around Monte Calvarino (in comparative terms to the region in general) are particularly steep, and from a viticultural perspective, pose some challenges. But to Antonio, this is critical to capture depth of flavour and structure, as the best expressions of Soave are never found on the valley floor where it gets too warm. Here, the ancient volcanic soils impart a flinty minerality to the hand-harvested fruit, while in the cellar, lees stirring and subtle oak ageing and varying levels of appassimento add a rich texture and further complexity to the wine.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with a distinct glimmer of green running around the outskirts and a watery hue. Flowing out of the glass are delightful scents of pear, red apple and lime followed by light slate and fresh garden herb notes. Delicious pear, red apple and lime fruits showcase the vintages trademark intensity with some stony characters lying underneath. Bursting with freshness it finishes dry with crisp acidity and a long aftertaste that picks up subtle accents of fresh herbs.
