    Tenerife, SPAIN

    $839.88 Dozen

Envínate, which literally translates as “Wine Yourself,” is the project of four young passionate winemakers: Roberto Santana (based in the Canaries), Jose Martinez (Almansa), Laura Ramos (Murcia) and Alfonso Torrente (Ribeira Sacra). The four met while studying oenology in Alicante in 2005 and formed a collective based on a shared philosophy of wine and a desire to explore the ancient, Atlantic influenced terroirs of western Spain.

In 2008, the group bought their first vineyard in Ribeira Sacra, then took control of vineyards on the north side of Tenerife, and followed with a single patch of Tinta Amarela in Extremadura. Finally, in 2012, the group began working with a site in Almansa, where Jose lives and works, planted to Garnacha Tintorera. In each region, they work old, previously abandoned vineyards, but importantly for a project with such spread, one of the team lives full time in each location, working the vineyards year round.

Migan and Palo Blanco are both very old vine wines from the Valle de la Orotava zone, although they don’t bear the D.O. stamp. The old vines are trained in the Trezendo fashion: braiding new shoots over older ones until the vines begin to resemble old dreadlocks weaving over the landscape. The terrain is flatter than Táganan, more conducive to farming. Migan is two parcels of Listan Negro, both over 100 years old, while Palo Blanco is a single vineyard from the town of Los Realejos planted on black volcanic soils.

    Other Reviews....
An outstanding white from the Valle de la Orotava, the 2018 Palo Blanco is named after a zone or "paraje" from the village of Los Realejos that produced Listán Blanco of a strong and different personality. In 2018, they used a further two plots, one at 500 and the other one at 850 meters in altitude, all three planted with centenary "cordón trenzado" braided vines. This is only 11.5% alcohol and has great acidity, a pH of three and seven grams of acidity after full malolactic. Sixty-five percent of the volume matured in 2,500-liter oval oak vats and the rest in 228-liter barriques. This is sharp, vertical, mineral and austere, a white made with rocks—it's pure rock juice (think Vatan or Bageiras), the most mineral of the whites they make. It has some notes of chamomile and combines power and elegance. This is a groundbreaking, world-class white, way better than previous vintages. And it's made from a variety that people say is second class... second class to none! 9,700 bottles produced. It's the largest production to date, and it was bottled in January 2020.

Táganan is both the name of a village on the very north eastern tip of Tenerife and a local term for steep slope. Envínate make two reds and two whites from this village; Táganan Tinto and Blanco, which come from multiple old parcels and two crus, parcelas Campanario and Margalagua. All the wines are field blends containing a dizzying array of obscure local varieties grown on very old bush vines in the steep volcanic soils overlooking the ocean.

    Other Reviews....
The most anticipated Envínate white since they had to stop making the single-vineyard Amogoje is here, the 2018 Táganan Campanario Blanco from a one-hectare vineyard they purchased in late 2017 from Antonio Delgado, who is old and cannot work it anymore and his sons are not involved in the vineyards. This is from vineyard in the village of Almáciga in a zone known as El Campanario (the bell tower), from a north-facing plot that's very close to the sea and planted with an unusual blend of grapes, mostly Forastera Gomera, Gual (known as Boal in Madeira) and Verdello plus of course Listán Blanco. The bottled wine is 12.5% alcohol with amazing freshness and incredible acidity readings, a pH of 3.05 and seven grams of acidity (measured in tartaric acid), if you think this is a subtropical island. It matured in neutral 600-liter oak barrels for 12 months without racking or any sulfur added to it. It has a golden color, from the varietal mix used. This comes from an amazing place that looks like a jungle (I was thinking of a coffee plantation in Peru or something like that), and it's incredible how fresh the wine is. This is the lower part of the vineyard they used to vinify and bottle separately, Amogoge. This is highly personal and somewhat reminds me of some whites from the island of La Palma with a somewhat medicinal undertone that makes it quite different. 1,300 bottles were filled in January 2020.

‘There’s a lot going on this delightfully refreshing white, the juxtaposition between the rounded mid palate feel and zippy acidity, simply brilliant.’

Brilliant very pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Aromas of pears and light honeysuckle infused with flinty mineral notes are trailed by scents of lemon and fresh herbs. Beautifully textured, fresh and mouthfilling, flavours of peach, honeysuckle, pear and lime are backed by flinty mineral infused acidity which gives the dry finish a racy feel. The 2020 vintage was slightly cooler than the average growing season, resulting in wines with more profound character and depth. Blair Walter noting: "We have great expectations for the 2020 wines." Fruit sourced for their wines are fully organic and follow biodynamic viticulture, ensuring the highest quality fruit arrives at the winery. From there winemaking is intentionally hands off with gravity flow, wild yeasts, wild malo, and an avoidance of fining and filtration to help preserve the expression of its terroir.

Felton Road farms four properties totaling 32 ha in the Bannockburn sub-region of Central Otago. The fruit for this wine is mostly grown on the Elms vineyard in Blocks 2, 6, 8 & 9; plus approximately 10% coming from the Cornish Point vineyard. There are a range of altitudes and aspects, with the soils composed mostly of deep alluvial schist gravels.

    Notes from the winery....
Aromas of elderflower and stone fruit, hints of pineapple and baking spice, concluding with chalk and stones. The palate is broad and encompassing with real power and concentration of fruit from this low yielding and cooler vintage. The luscious fruit weight is tempered by the vivacious acidity bringing closure and great length. A classic Bannockburn Chardonnay that is not fined or filtered thereby retaining all of its “somewhereness”.

Felton Road farms four properties totaling 32 ha in the Bannockburn sub-region of Central Otago. Block 2 is positioned on a gentle east facing slope immediately north of Block 3 on The Elms vineyard and was planted in 1992.
Classic citrus flowers and zest, very linear and single minded. This is a clue to the palate; a shockwave of citrus and stone, with laser sharp focus, only allowing the hints of nuts and toast to show through a long, long finish. Texturally the wine is full but kept tight with a fine minerality and immense precision.

Riper and more boldly fruited than what is typical for a Felton Road Chardonnay, but this is what is consistently delivered from the steeper and more elevated, north facing, Block 6 site. The heaviness must be taken in context, as it still possesses a subtle hand, the tight acidity and fine minerality that has become the hallmark of our Chardonnays. A fascinating contrast.

Slightly deeper in colour than the Beerenauslese, the Trockenbeeren Auslese displays a bright straw core with golden edges and a very pale gold hue. Potent aromas of ripe apricots draped in honey waft from the glass with ripe peach, hints of marmalade and subtle raisin notes also evident. Denser and richer than the Beerenauslese it has outstanding intensity of flavour and a thick viscous mouthfeel. Rich, lusciously textured honeyed apricots and peaches saturate the palate with elements of ripe pineapple, marmalade, lemon and botrytised raisiny characters ensuing. Finishes fresh with cleansing acidity, showing great harmony with the rich lush honey botrytised fruit. Full, bright, moderately deep golden colour with lemon-green hues, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is bright and vibrant with opulent and decadent aromas of ripe tropical fruit and citrus fruits along with marmalade, honey and nectar, raisins and suggestions of crystallised fruits, musk and a hint of caramel. Very sweet on palate and light-bodied, the palate is incredible richness and opulence, with sensational unctuousness and viscosity. The flavours of ripe tropical and citrus fruit are enriched honey, marmalade, exotic florals, musk and nectar, unfolding the fill the palate. The fruit and richness forms a deep and dense core with great presence, and fine lacy acidity lends cut, energy and tension. The wine carries to a decadently deep and plush, honied finish with crystallised fruits, raisins and hints of caramel. This is an incredibly rich, decadent and opulent, sweet, botrytised Riesling, with nectar, honey, musk and raisiny flavours forming a deep and dense palate core. Serve as a liqueur, and with caramel desserts or blue cheeses over the next 10+ years. Selective hand-picked fruit from 3 tries, at 44.2 Brix, 75% from the ’Middle’ and 25% from the ‘Back’ block old vines, with 100% botrytised, raisined berries, fermented 65% in stainless kegs and barrels and 35% seasoned wood to 9.0% alc. and 315 g/L RS.

Of the estate's 15 hectares on the gravels of the Wairau Valley, half of those are planted to Riesling. Production of other varieties is supplemented by purchased fruit. In 2017, the deluges that made the vintage challenging for varieties like Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir meant a decent amount of botrytis in the late-ripening Riesling. There's a full range of noble-sweet prädikats as a result, including a stunning beerenauslese and a super sweet trockenbeerenauslese.
A stupendous effort, the 2017 F Series Riesling Beerenauslese features gorgeous aromas and flavors of dried apricot and candied pineapple. It's incredibly sweet and rich (220 grams per liter residual sugar) yet balanced by a crisp edge of lime zest. I wouldn't hesitate to put it up against some top German competition. It should age well for a decade or two. Drink 2018-2035.

Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Aromas of baked apple and pear intermix with honeysuckle, quince and spice. The palate has a feeling of textural roundness yet remains fresh with pear and ripe apple fruits dominate over traces of honeysuckle, lime and wet stone. Finishes dry and brisk with a medium length aftertaste.

The domaine of Francois Cotat is a tiny 4 hectares, and has been making some of the most exceptional wines of the Loire since 1947. Their success and individuality can be attributed to François' intense passion for creating the finest wine possible and his exceptionally placed vineyards. Prudent viticulture combined with densely planted vines, ultra-low yields and relatively late harvesting produces fantastically flavoursome fruit. Whilst not Biodynamic, Francois uses organic fertilisers and racks according to the phases of the moon. His incredible wines develop with age and, in the best vintages, can be cellared for more than 30 years.

From a plot just over 1 hectare in size in Les Monts Damnés, the imposing sweep of vineyards that look down driectly upon Chavignol. This has a deeper tone and pitch than the 'Caillotes' and perhaps a touch more concentration. François’s Monts Damnés is clearly the best example of this famous Cru. Reflecting the excellent vintage, this wine is cool and compact, a taut, tightly coiled core of briny minerality; such tension, and exquisite balance. Superb and needs time, plenty of time. A rare and iconic wine in the Loire and for good reason.

Named after François father, Cuvée Paul is an incredibly rare wine often made from La Grande Côte and set aside as having the greatest potential for ageing. It is not made every year. A hark back to how Chavignol was made in the 40's and 50's it is made from very ripe grapes and shows gentle sweetness and incredible power.

This vineyard is where François has his oldest vines, these days the average age is about 40 years because he has had to replant many of the very old vines as the Sauvignon is susceptible to viruses as it ages and so past 60 years old the vine is usually close to unproductive. This vineyard produces the most flamboyant wines in this collection, there are subtle notes of orchard fruit and more power but don't let that fool you as it is all aligned to incredible finesse, cool acidity and tactile minerality. These are very special bottles.

Francois Rousset is producing some of the most captivating wines in the Jura right now. Launching his winery in 2006 in the Chateau Chalon appellation, Francois labels his wines as Cotes du Jura since he makes them in a non-oxidative ouillé or topped-up style. Vinified by parcel, the farming is organic-certified with little to no sulphur and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The lieu-dit underneath the big rock of Château Chalon is the best known and most prestigious, and it's the source for the 2017 Côtes du Jura Savagnin Cuvée du Professeur Sous Roche. This Savagnin would have the right to be called Château Chalon if it was aged sous voile for six years, but because it matured in topped-up barrels for 14 to 16 months, it's a Côtes du Jura, a choice of Russet-Martin. Yields were catastrophically low in 2017, and there are only 1,500 of this (but there will be some 4,000 in 2018). It's a bit spicy, and I guess it must have had some traces of flor, which give it the Jura character. It matured in oak barrels from Burgundy, and it's faintly oxidative. Cuvée du Professeur makes reference to his father who still owns this vineyard.

Since Roman times, the wines from the area around Château-Chalon were highly appreciated. The Benedictine monks founded the Abbey of Saint-Pierre in nearby Baume-les-Messieurs in 909 AD, this had a direct impact on local viticulture. For centuries, Château-Chalon has become world famous for its inimitable Vins Jaunes. The reputation of these wines brought the inhabitants of the village almost aristocratic wealth. The appreciation for the Vin Jaune is unbroken until today. And Château-Chalon offers the highest quality terroirs for the production of oxidatively matured wines from the Savagnin grape. This is now increasingly true for wines of the non-oxidative ouillé style. This is a complex beauty and aged 8 years instead of the customary 6 sous voile.

This is from very venerable terroir, named after one of the plots in Château Chalon that has limestone soils with some stones and marl. It has superb aromas of yellow fruits, spice, and a twist of Islay malt whisky complexed by an irresistible mineral lift. It's powerful and very complex in the mouth with serious depth and complexity. It's very young now and will start to unfurl over the coming years and then keep for the next 20 or more.

François was still selling grapes to the cooperative in 2017, which was also the year of the frost, so there is very little wine. Since 2015, he has used no sulfites, and the vineyards are organically farmed but not certified. One of the most successful wines from this challenging year is the 2017 Côtes du Jura Chardonnay Terres Blanches, which was aged in topped-up 600-liter oak barrels for 15 months. It shows very good precision and tickles your tongue and leaves a faintly smoky aftertaste. It's named after the white soils where the vines grow in the village of Lavigny.

Even if what I tasted was not exactly the final blend, I sampled a 50/50 blend of Savagnin and Chardonnay that will be one of the components of the 2018 Côtes du Jura Mémée Marie, where the Savagnin ages sous voile for a few months and then is blended with the Chardonnay and matured exclusively in stainless steel. This wine set the tone of the tasting, showing the clean style and simplicity of fruit of this cuvée of Savagnin grown on gray marl soils and Chardonnay grown on stonier soils. It shows a little medicinal but is serious, dry, tasty and easy to drink. This white is named after his grandmother.

The 2019 Brauneberg Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Trocken GG is very fine, flinty, delicate and charming on the precise and beautifully articulated slatey and herbal nose that also displays highly refined and discreet tropical fruit aromas. However, the nose is remarkably shy at this early stage. On the palate, this is a lithe Juffer Sonnenuhr with great finesse and a pure, mineral, persistently salty and crunchy finish that doesn't show much fruit and power at this stage. This seems to be a rather ascetic yet piquant and salty Riesling, and I am curious how the wine will develop over the next six months. The finish is very long, intense and still dominated by yeasty notes. This will develop to a spectacular JSU with time.

The 2019er Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Trocken GG offers a very delicate and flowery nose of almond cream, yellow peach, smoke, tangerine, candied grapefruit, and herbs, all wrapped into suffused smoke and reduction. The wine is all about finesse on the light-weighted, subtly creamy, and flower-infused palate. It leaves one with a superb feel of herbs, quite some tartness (in need of integration), and a hint of power in the long, broader, and assertive finish. This gorgeous dry Riesling now only a few years of patience for it to integrate its different components.

The 2019 Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese (Gold Capsule) is a beauty close to perfection. On the palate, this is an incredibly juicy, piquant, refined, salty and weightless yet intense Riesling with concentrated but highly stimulating fruit. The 2019er Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese GK was made from partially botrytized grapes harvested at 120-125° Oechsle and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a most captivating nose of botrytized fruit as scents of mango, passion fruit, honeyed peach, dried apricot, pineapple, whipped cream, herbs, and smoke. The wine proves gorgeously unctuous and creamy on the fully sweet and creamy palate. A touch of power and a feel of intensity are brilliantly wrapped into magically focused and zesty elements in the finish. The persistence and aromatic purity are just stunning. This noble-sweet needs more than a full decade to integrate its richness and fully show its full nuances, but the patience will be rewarded.

Georg Breuer estate was founded in 1880 as part of a wine merchant company, and has been owned by the Breuer family since the beginning of the 20th century. Georg Breuer enlarged the estate and increased the export of wines. His sons Bernhard and Heinrich and later Bernhard’s daughter Theresa expanded the vineyard size to 40 hectares in the best Rüdesheim, Rauenthal and Lorch sites. Theresa Breuer was thrust into the business after the sudden passing of her father in 2004, and through tireless work and dedication is now one of the most respected winemaking forces in Germany. The estate's focus is on top dry Riesling wines from the unique terroir of the Rheingau valley, and Breuer's flagship crus are Rüdesheim Berg Schlossberg and the 12.5-acre monopole, Rauenthal Nonnenberg.

Georg Breuer has vines on 3.5 hectares of the Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg. With a gradient of 70%, this is the steepest vineyard in the Rheingau. Its name derives from the Ehrenfels castle ruins above the Rhine Gorge. Heat-absorbing weathered slate with loess and loam give ideal ripening conditions for Riesling which thrives on the high mineral content of the soil. Farming is 100% organic (Georg Breuer is certified by Fair & Green). 100% healthy, ripe fruit, no maceration, whole cluster pressing, fermentation in old German wooden barrels (600-litre and 1,200 -litre), one racking after the fermentation and then a storage period on the fine lees for about seven months.

The estate's focus is on top dry Riesling wines from the unique terroir of the Rheingau valley, and Breuer's flagship crus are Rüdesheim Berg Schlossberg and the 12.5-acre monopole, Rauenthal Nonnenberg.

Parcels of the Berg Rottland vineyard site stretching into the village of Rüdesheim predominantly consist of deep loess soils. Elsewhere shallow, gravely soils emerging from slate and sandstone prevail. Yields are very low, at about 25 hl/ha.

A stunning GG equivalent! Serious ripeness, but it somehow remains poised and precise with minty freshness that gives it a light feel. The flavors roll gracefully over the palate through to the very long, grapefruit-peel and mineral finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drinkable now, but better in 2022.

The grapes for this wine are sourced from the second-best parcels of the grand cru-classified vineyard sites in Rüdesheim and Rauenthal. Here deep phyllite, clay and quartzite slate soils prevail. The Latin name “Montosa” hints at the mountainous earth of the steep vineyard sites.

This is a bit closed and, therefore, not one of the 2019s that leap into your face. Yet, it has really impressive depth, is precisely proportioned and has a lot of finesse at the very long finish. Try to be patient, if you want the best from this delicate masterpiece. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.

The vineyard site Pfaffenwies was initially mentioned as ‘pafenwies’ in documents from 1211, and later as ‘pfaffenwissen’ (1235). It was named after Pastor Dydo, also known as ‘Pfaffe’. This steep site has a gradient of up to 45% and is situated between 90 to 160m above sea level. The soil is a combination of stony Hunsrück slate and Taunus quartzite, with loess in the lower parts. Riesling from this area is characterised by great elegance as well as pronounced acidity and minerality.

Georg Breuer's village Rieslings represent different attributes of the vineyard sites in Rüdesheim and Rauenthal through character and palate. Rüdesheim brings strong minerality and stone fruit aromas from steep slate and quartz soil.

At once generous, yet finely and polished, this is a pretty serious wine for the village-wine category with a lot of depth at the finish, where positive tannins and a slate-like quality add some real complexity. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.
