December and January in Martinborough were very dry. However, February rains broke rainfall records. March and April experienced settled climatic conditions, but wet ground conditions contributed to high humidity in the canopy, which produced some botrytis in the Chardonnay. Bright straw colour with green tinge and pale straw hue. Wonderful lifted nose – top note of cashew, hazelnut, yeast lees and nougat. Creamy, mouthfilling palate, showing considerable complexity. Flavours of yeast lees, hazelnut and cashew. Excellent weight and power. Great length and persistence. Clean finish. More Martinborough magic and a superb example of Chardonnay.

From Rias Baixas, this is a ripper rendition of the variety, delivering detail, awesome saline minerality and lots of drinkability. Opens with that oyster shell scent, sea spray, anise and lemon in mineral water. Tingly in the palate, beautifully minerally and so very fresh in feel; more of the lemon in mineral water, but strong, concentrated and bright. Has a glass shard feel to texture, crisp and mouth-watering. Easy to love, really easy to get into. Drink 2021-2023.

Antonio Fattori is the third generation to grow vines and make wine at his family’s Terrossa estates. Made from fruit grown on the vineyards near Antonio’s home, he picks fruit early, close to a week before most, to retain freshness. The cooler 2018 resulted in 15% lower average temperatures in the Aconcagua Costa zone. The 2018 Chardonnay Aconcagua Costa was produced with grapes that saw a slow ripening to full flavors while keeping moderate alcohol and very high levels of acidity. The vineyards are 12 kilometers away from the Pacific Ocean and have a strong marine influence. It fermented with native yeasts in oak barrels, with only 40% of the wine going through malolactic fermentation. It matured in second and third use French oak barrels for 11 months. It's very clean, with a mixture if citrus, herbs and flowers, and it's aromatic without excess, with a medium to full-bodied palate with some restraint but not lacking volume. There is nice balance and freshness, and it ends with a salty twist. Drink 2020-2024.

A very mineral-driven chardonnay that gets going with flint, citrus, green apples and then cloves and schist. A very taut palate with edgy acidity, but good pear-drop undertones to keep it generous and balanced. Drink now.

Francisco Baettig has a magical touch with Chardonnay and this "Premier Cru level" example from a range of terroirs in the Aconcagua Costa region is wonderfully refined, its pale colour reflecting its elegance. Citrus, beeswax and fresh toast flavours combine enticingly here. 2020-25.

Arboleda is the premium tier in the Eduardo Chadwick family of wines. The fruit for the Chardonnay is sourced from their Chilhue vineyard, a 1047 hectare property of rolling hills located just 12km from the Pacific Ocean which experiences similar conditions to that of Marlborough in New Zealand making it ideal for growing cool climate grape varieties.

Aged for 10 months in French oak barrels. Bright straw colour with a watery hue. Lifted nectarine and white peach aromas intermingle with hints of grapefruit and gun flint followed by subtle dried honey and spice notes. Well rounded in the mouth the palate has fleshed out nicely with some bottle age. Rich stone fruit flavours combine with dried honey and citrusy nougat characters to give the wine a lightly creamed feel over a back drop of subtle cashew. Good fresh finish. Excellent intensity and length concluding with a delicious white peach, nectarine and dried honey laced aftertaste.

This has great freshness with pear, lemon and floral aromas and just a hint of toast. Sleek and elegant, but concentrated, with a long, polished, rather mineral finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

The Chardonnays that Francisco Baettig is making out on the Aconcagua Coast are some of the best in Chile right now. This is a little oakier than his Errázuriz bottling, but has the same freshness, elegance and minerality, complemented by some stone fruit sweetness. 2019-23.

Arboleda's Chardonnays have excelled delivering intense flavours and rich textures. This is their best yet.

Fermentation took place in French oak barrels, 6% of which were new with the balance in second and third use barrels. A portion of the wine remained on its lees for 10 months to enhance the wines textural qualities and add complexity. 35% of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation. ‘Arboleda’s Chardonnays have excelled delivering intense flavours and rich textures. ’

Grillo is a grape variety native to Sicily which traditionally was used for the production of Marsala. It’s a late ripening varietal, typically grown on bush vines, and needs a warm to hot climate to prosper – it is therefore no surprise that it has thrived on the sundrenched hills of Sicily for over 2000 years. More recently its potential for creating refreshing dry whites bursting with flavour has come to the fore.
