Here the expressive nose is compositionally similar to the old vines cuvée but with more evident spice elements. The impressively concentrated and almost opulently rich big-bodied flavors are muscular and powerful, all wrapped in a mouth coating and incredibly long finish. This is a knockout though note well that if you wish to drink it at its peak, plenty of patience will be necessary. Drink from 2034+.

The 2019 Moulin-à-Vent Les Rouchaux wafts from the glass with notes of dark berry fruit, sweet spices, peonies and raw cocoa, delicately patinated by its élevage in used wood. Medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, with fine concentration, powdery tannins and a spicy finish, it's seamless and complete. Drink 2021 - 2035.

The 2019 Moulin-à-Vent Les Rouchaux has an expressive bouquet of well-defined brambly red fruit. The palate is quite spicy on the entry, maybe more Côte d’Or in personality than Beaujolais, but culminates in a lovely hoisin-tinged finish. Fine. Drink 2022-2030.

Of the three Barolo samples I tasted from barrel (including Arione and Cerretta, which are also from Serralunga d'Alba), the Giacomo Conterno 2018 Barolo Francia was the furthest behind and the hardest to pin down at this stage in its infancy. I have opened my range of scores accordingly to compensate for the magical unknowns that are likely to occur as the wine moves toward greater harmony and integration before its commercial release. The wine is linear and pointedly focused, lacking the width and volume it will gain when given more time to flesh out and relax. The aromas are also quite primary and simple at this point, with dark cherry and even a hint of ripe strawberry ceding gradually to grilled herb, blue flower and baked brick. This vintage of Barolo Francia will require patience. Drink 2027 - 2055.

Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (Dec 2021)

The 2018 Barolo Francia is powerful, deep and also a touch austere. It shows the edginess of all the 2018s, but also has a feeling of textural creaminess that adds tons of character. Spice, menthol, leather and a whole range of balsamic overtones build into the deep, imposing finish. Roberto Conterno decided to forego his Barolo Monfortino in 2018, opting instead to blend all the casks into his Francia bottling. When that happens, Francia often surprises down the road. That could very well turn out to be the case here. Drink 2024-2043.

Dense dark purple. Powerful plums, a graphite note as well, significant density, the fruit swells right across the palate, a huge volume but the ripeness is perfectly judged, with an excellent length. This is very impressive. Revelling in the warmer vintage because the tannins are riper.

This is made mostly from Chatelots with a touch of Feusselottes. Fresh mid purple, the nose is not leaping out at first. Excellent intensity behind, a firmer style of Chambolle as Chatelots dominates. Good length and enough acidity to balance.

Somber and inexpressive aromas of various dark berries, earth, the sauvage and pretty floral wisps introduce the acceptably dense but attractively textured medium weight flavors that possess unusually good refinement for a young Clos de Vougeot, all wrapped in a youthfully austere finish that flashes impressive depth and persistence. While this quality effort will need 12 to 15 years to reach its apogee, it's not so structured that it couldn't be enjoyed at around 7 to 8 years of age. Drink from 2031+.

Rich deep crimson to purple colour, again with a quieter nose, but it is balanced and not over ripe. Indeed, there is a crispness to the raspberry fruit at the front end, opening out to a fleshier finish as the oak adds its two bits worth. Well organised wine which will need time to develop personality.

Midnight black in colour with a dark red black tinged hue. Soaring from the glass are highly alluring aromas of ripe red to black currant, mulberry, hints of red liquorice and bay leaf followed by some spicy vanillin cedar, tobacco, earth and faint black olive. Rich yet supremely refined and elegantly structured, a tidal wave of red to black fruit powers its way across the palate. Beautifully fleshed with notions of vanillin cedar, tobacco, subtle earthy black olive and infusions of bay leaf lingering through the back palate. Fine grained, seamlessly integrated tannins finishing exceptionally long and magnificently balanced with a Bordeaux like feel to it.

93/6/1% cabernet sauvignon/malbec/cabernet franc. Hand picked, 50% wild ferment, 21 days on skins, matured for 19 months in French oak (100% new). If you haven't had the pleasure of drinking one of these cabernets as an older wine, you may not get the full scope of the young wine on release. Here, today, it is tightly coiled, spicy and concentrated. The savoury, biscuity oak we often associate with good quality Bordeaux is here in spades, and it encases the kaleidoscopic flavours that lie possible beyond. However, in 10 years, this wine transforms into a powerful and expansive wine of depth, grace and evocation. From one of Margaret River's greatest all-time vintages, this is a wine for the ages. "...a truly memorable dram." - whiskyadvocate.com

The eighth release in the Islay Barley series was produced using barley grown on Islay in 2012 by farmers from seven island farms, dried, malted and distilled in 2013. Left unpeated and matured in a mix of first-fill American whiskey casks and x-European casks for a minimum of eight years, it's described as having aromas and flavours of honeyed porridge and lemon meringue pie. Like the earlier releases, each expression from the individual growing season is subtly nuanced; each a variation on the signature maritime-citrus, barley forward style that makes these bottlings popular year in year out. Non chill filtered. 50% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... This expression, now in its eighth edition, showcases Bruichladdich’s commitment to Islay terroir. It’s an 8 year old in a world of double-digit age stated scotch, but you’ll never accuse this delightful whisky of being too young. Sweet biscuity aromas along with ripe peaches and pears lead to a creamy palate of lemon cake, candied orange, nougat and vanilla, all balanced by the wood influence and hints of salinity. Water brings out sweet nectar and honey. The finish is graceful, long, and lively, making this a truly memorable dram. 94 points —David Savona, whiskyadvocate.com

...Same set-up. Colour: a notch darker. Nose: fruitier, rootier, more expressive. Celeriac and fennel, sweet beets, gentian (hurray!) and whiffs of wee white pineapples. Hold on, viognier? With water: back to breads, grist and oats, plus white pepper. An unexpected turn of events. Mouth (neat): once again, a fruitier version after the 2012, with more jelly babies after the ginger mints and cinnamon. With water: same as the 2012. Finish: same, with some hot spices coming to the front. Comments: not much to add. This one's very marginally fruitier, but it'll all depend on the amount and type of water you'll be using. Let's make this clear though, I think they are great drops! 84 points - whiskyfun.com

Once again, the nose is firmly reduced and in need of aeration. There is good verve and detail to the lighter weight (though not dilute) flavors that possess good flavor authority while delivering reasonably good length on the moderately rustic finale. Note that my rating assumes that the nose will gradually clean up with aging. Drink from 2026+.

An intricately layered nose combines notes of red and dark cherry and plum with those of earth and underbrush. The initial palate impression of the medium weight flavors seems somewhat light but as they sit in the mouth the weight and power pick up and particularly so on the energetic and well-detailed finish that is less austere than usual. This balanced effort is also quite firmly structured and may well require up to 20 years of aging to completely resolve the supporting tannins. Drink from 2036+.

Two plots, both at the top. That which came from the Confuron family is trained in gobelet fashion to reduce vigour, while the Noëllat plot has a much better selection of pinot plant material and old vines. Glowing red purple. Back to the primary grape style of nose, otherwise quite backward. Needs more barrel time. Huge weight of fruit, dark cherry coulis, in the mouth. Nicely balanced on the palate, some elegance.

A highly spiced nose features notes of cassis, plum, hoisin and a hint of sandalwood. The ripe, mouth coating and delicious medium-bodied flavors possess excellent length on the well-balanced if youthfully austere finish that also really firms up as it sits on the palate. This is definitely a "buy and forget you own it" wine as I would advise not touching a bottle for at least 10 years and 15 to 20 would likely be better. Drink from 2036+.

The vines date back to 1926. Rich dense black purple, the nose immediately gives a sense of weight and of distinction. Quite muscular but in addition to, rather than at the expense of, finesse. There is a fine succulent fruit and a sense of harmony. I can see the wood a touch though at the back, though Louis says this is a recent and passing phenomenon.

A top note of herbal tea is present on the earthy and markedly sauvage-inflected aromas of red and dark currant with a smoky nuance. The denser if less refined medium weight plus flavors exhibit a taut muscularity along with focused powerful on the sappy, serious, youthfully austere and impressively long finish where the only reproach is a touch of warmth. This is always one of Taupenot's best wines, certainly among the 1ers, and 2019 is no different. Drink from 2031+.

Dense purple black. This is usually the outstanding cuvée and once again the nose promises very well, Dark fruit, concentrated but not too ripe, a little bit of black cherry, then some ripe strawberry, easily enough fruit to surround the tannins, just the right acidity. The Nervi estate is the oldest in the DOCG of Gattinara, north of Piedmont, founded in 1906 by original owner Luigi Nervi. A long time admirer of the wines and friends of the owners at the time, Roberto Conterno (of Giacomo Conterno fame) purchased a 90% stake in the winery in 2018, renaming it Conterno Nervi. A relatively new designation, Gattinara became a DOCG in 1990, and while the wines show similarities to those of Piedmont, generally Gattinara reds have a more elevated feel, savoury and structured, with plenty of acidity and fine tannins allowing for great longevity.

Effectively the ‘Classico’, this is comprised of four key plots, Casacce, Garavoglie, Molsino and Valferana. Nervi's Gattinara is fermented and macerated in steel at controlled temperatures for 25–30 days, followed by 30 months in large Stockinger Austrian botti.

There are 20 cru vineyards in the Gattinara DOCG appellation, with Valferana sitting near the geographical centre of the commune at a height of 370 metres. Although it sits a little lower than Molsino, Valferana doesn’t get as much sunlight or warmth, facing predominantly west, and it is one of the steepest crus. Most vintages, the wine has a tight, focused frame. ‘Valferana’ is the more austere of the two crus, with a tightly wound core gifted by Gattinara’ s porphyry-gravel soil; the wine is disciplined with myriad mineral nuances. The wine is fermented and macerated in tini (large conical wooden vats) for 3–4 weeks, then aged for another 40 months in various large wood formats.

    Other Reviews....
As all Nebbiolo lovers know well, this mighty Piedmont grape is especially sensitive to place. That's the main takeaway with the Conterno Nervi 2018 Gattinara Vigna Valferana. This is a west-facing vineyard at 300 to 350 meters in altitude that is characterized by volcanic soils and slightly cooler conditions, resulting in an etched and very focused expression of Nebbiolo (as opposed to Molsino that tends to be open-knit and more concentrated). Valferana is tightly chiseled and crisp, with blue flower, sour cherry, tobacco smoke, underbrush and candied orange peel. The wine offers a complete picture of the grape from Gattinara with some extra tannic edge to carry it through the years. Drink 2024 - 2042.

The 2018 Gattinara Valferana is explosive right out of the glass. Supporting veins of tannin carry a core of red fruit, cinnamon, rose petal, blood orange, mint and white pepper. The Valferana is complex and wonderfully deep from start to finish. Valferana is the cooler of the two single vineyard Gattinaras that are bottled separately here. The 2018 is a special wine. Pierre Vincent Girardin is making big waves in Burgundy with the hype surrounding him already at fever pitch. All this and Pierre is still only in his early 20's with just a handful of vintages under his belt. Part of the excitement stems from the vineyard sources at his disposal, but also from the distinct style exhibited so clearly in these initial vintages of his wines. Of course it helps that his father is Vincent Girardin, and following the sale of his namesake Domaine in 2011 bequeathed Pierre 4.5 hectares of prime vineyards, and helped set up a brand new winery where evidently no expense has been spared on the latest presses, fermentation tanks and larger-format barrels from Tonnellerie François Frères.

Stylistically Pierre has taken a different approach than that of his father's wines, preferring a lighter touch than the rich and oaky style of years gone by. The white wines are finer-boned and more reductive, and his are reds delicate and fruit-driven, with a minimum of extraction and plenty of stem retention.

Along with Rugiens, Les Grands Epenots is considered the best Premier Cru in Pommard and the soil here is slightly richer than Petits Epenots, with high levels of iron. Average vine age in these plots is over 50 years old, and the wine is fermented with 100% whole cluster before aging in barrel (30% new) for 12 months plus four months in stainless steel.

Please note: due to the winery packaging, we often receive these wines from the distributor with marks on the front label. These are usually minor, however they are unavoidable.

    ABV: 14%
    Closure: Cork

Since legendary US importer Kermit Lynch dubbed them the Gang of Four in the 1980's, wine collectors the world over have been searching for the precious few bottles of Beaujolais from Jean Foillard, Marcel Lapierre, Guy Breton, and Jean-Paul Thévenet. Each of these producers were inspired by the natural wine growing and wine making methods of local hero Jules Chauvet. Their aim is to help the unique Beaujolais terroir express itself with minimal intervention, harnessing old vines farmed with organic practices, fermentation with natural yeasts, along with limited use of sulphur. Together they have raised not only the profile of the region, but demonstrated that Beaujolais is more than just 'Nouveau' and can indeed produce meaningful, complex and wonderful wines.

Also known as "Petit Max" by his friends, Guy Breton produces wines that are easy to drink, and his are typically the lightest in colour, the lowest in alcohol, and the least tannic of the Gang of Four. Breton’s domaine is comprised of just over four hectares, most of which are located in Morgon, and are supplemented with purchased grapes from surrounding appellations enabling him to vinify a diverse portfolio of Beaujolais crus. Like fellow Beaujolais stars, Guy Breton has access to incredibly old vines that are organically farmed, and are vinified with the lightest of touches. These are dangerously drinkable wines, but if you can resist the urge also age with grace for many years.

P'tit Max is sourced from a selection of the domaine’s oldest vines averaging over 90+ years old in the Les Charmes lieu-dit of Morgon. Vinification is similar to the Morgon “Vieilles Vignes” bottling, however sees longer aging at 12 months élevage, and in slightly newer barrels.

    Armagnac, FRANCE
    $299. 00
    Bottle
    $3588.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

The oldest Delord from a recent vertical is this flamboyant, chestnut coloured 1973, a once-off vintage dated expression. Benefiting from 5-10 minutes of air contact, it develops into a buttery, creamy-textured brandy boasting impressive depth including layers of sticky date, raisins and fruit cake as well as hints of dried flowers, backed up by vibrant spices. Oak is encroaching, but enough fruit character is retained - even if you have to roll it around your mouth to extract it. Showing off a feminine and refined side not often experienced in Armagnac, this will make for a sumptuous, end-of-the-night alternative to XO Cognac or sherried Single Malts. 40% Alc./Vol.

Situated in Bas-Armagnac, Delord's distillery is to be found in the village of Lannepax, the ancestral home of the Delord family. First produced in 2008, the Regnie is sourced from the hills between the Côte de Brouilly and the Côte du Py of Morgon, around the village of Régnié-Durette. Guy’s grandfather handed down the two parcels that go into this wine: one with 100-year-old and the other with 35-year-old vines. The shallow soil of sand and decomposing stones gives the vines easy access to the bedrock, creating firm wines with more grip and acidity than in Morgon.

Only a few pay grades up from rosato, and kind of like a Lamoresca Frappato in a way, tangy strawberry, sour cherry and spice. Light in body, sappy and peppery, with a loose-knit texture, a bit of edgy lift, but fun and good to drink. Drink 2022 - 2025.

After enthusiastic customer feedback for their cask strength inaugural release, ‘Full Noise’, the crew at Kinglake decided to make it part of their core range. Delivering the same distinctive spirit and ex-Bourbon finish sweetness of their 'OG' whisky, this is bottled straight from stand-out barrels only - namely 50 litre Makers Mark bourbon 'octaves'. The mash-bill consists of three different malts, grown and kilned in New South Wales, together with malt from the Scottish borders in the UK. The cuts are deep to give the heavy, oily spirit Kinglake desires. 60.1% Alc./Vol.

The additional watts are absorbed without flinching, quite the opposite. With water: very proud, we managed to reproduce the one at 46% vol. Don't laugh, that's absolutely not always the case. Mouth (neat): I think the oak's better handled, while some more chilli would come out too. Other than that, cinnamon, ginger, turmeric and nutmeg keep running the show. With water: even at the same strength of 46% vol. (roughly), there's something extra, perhaps more citrus? The spicier smokiness is there too. Finish: long, same. Since 2018, the minimum for XO is ten years old (it was previously just six) and while the exact age isn't stated, this is probably a blend that includes some much older brandies. Typical for Armagnac are the scents of ripe plums, dried apricots, dark chocolate and gingerbread, complexed by hints of tobacco and hazelnut. They're repeated in a medium bodied palate where vanilla, cedary oak, liquorice bullets, cinnamon and pepper warmth carry the finish. The persistence is good, and being neither too fiery, nor too dry or sweet, Delord have created a better than average point of entry for newcomers to the category. It's also a friendly all-rounder, so apart from being enjoyed over ice, after a meal or matched with chocolate, nuts or dried fruits, this has enough body to work in cocktails. 40% Alc./Vol.

Step away from Delord's core range and you get to explore their vintage dated series. These bottlings frequently deliver greater individuality and texture. A fine food Armagnac, the 1996 opens with a lifted, vibrant bouquet but loses intensity and definition after a short time in the glass. Residual notes of vanilla and rancio return on the palate where a thread of acidity cuts through flavours of prunes and cinnamon, adding freshness. Luminous straw-yellow. Complex, mint-accented aromas of nectarine, tangerine and powdered stone, plus a hint of licorice. Then bright, juicy and dense, showing outstanding acid-sugar balance and a penetrating juiciness to the stone fruit and herbal flavors. Finishes multilayered and very long, displaying noteworthy clarity and limy cut on the saline finish. Wine lovers everywhere know just how great Frédéric Emile Rieslings can be, but this looks to be a real knockout in the making; I absolutely love this wine’s mineral drive and precision. It pulls off the neat trick of being both very ageworthy and also lovely to drink right now. I was happy to know that my palate was still working after an extremely long day of tasting when I told Pierre that in this vintage of Frédéric Emile I found more of the Geisberg than the Osterberg (in most vintages, the wine is a blend of 60/40 Osterberg-Geisberg, at times even 70/30, but this year it’s more like 55/45). Drink 2026 - 2039.

The lemon-sherbet note here is really beautiful. Then comes a wealth of herbs, ranging from thyme to parsley, with a touch of sea salt, before turning to more floral nuances, such as cherries and almond blossom. The powerful acidity seems to surround the whole mouth and makes this almost like licking a lemon; the unmistakable dryness is all the more enjoyable because of it. Long and very elegant on the finish. Drink now.

Vintage Krug holds a special place among the landscape of prestige cuvée Champagne, over the years having produced some of the most mesmerising and memorable wines of the region. Appearing only when conditions allow, and never at the sacrifice of their number one wine Grande Cuvée, Vintage Krug is cherished and chased by collectors the world over. Knowing that Champagne displays a range of experiences as bottles evolve over time, Krug also holds back a small amount of these vintage wines to be released as they reach a new peak of expression, naming them Krug Collection. These impossibly rare releases of Krug Collection are kept in ideal conditions in the House’s cellars, and after regular tasting and appraisal are finally disgorged to reveal their new personality.

Krug Collection 1988 is part of Krug’s trilogy of three exceptional years (1988, 1989, 1990) with completely different conditions that resulted in Champagnes that are unique. Comprised of 50% Pinot Noir, 32% Chardonnay, 18% Pinot Meunier, Krug Collection 1988 was kept on lees for 29 years before finally receiving its cork in autumn 2017. 1988 is one of the most feted vintages in Champagne, and Krug decided to release the 1988 Collection after both 1989 and 1990 editions.

    Other Reviews....
The 1988 Krug Collection, a 2017 disgorgement, offers an enticing bouquet of grilled walnut, baked bread and a touch of freshly baked gingerbread on the nose, displaying exquisite delineation and focus. A tang of bitterness on the entry refreshes the senses. This champagne is impressive in terms of depth and salinity. Vibrant and bright, it conveys a sense of completeness, so that you can’t help coming back for just one more sip. At its peak? Probably. Drink 2022 - 2035.

Gorgeous, exuding aromas and flavors of baked black currant, toasted hazelnut and coffee liqueur, along with subtle hints of elderflower, oyster shell and white truffle. The rich profile relies on soft, citrus peel acidity, as well as a tang of salinity for freshness and balance. The plush, creamy texture feels like cashmere on the palate. A beauty at any age. Disgorged fall 2017. Drink now through 2028.

When Krug 1988 was first released, a few bottles remained stored in the Krug cellars to see how they aged. The result today is a bouquet of incredible complexity, a veritable spice box full of seductive scents including sandalwood, mocha, and leather as well as a waxy note. The palate is perfectly balanced with both ample flesh and breathtaking freshness, and a wide-ranging flavour and textural profile having elements of quince, candied fruit, and spices. A floral freshness takes the upper hand on the long finish of this supremely subtle and light-footed Champagne. Such a beguiling mix of youthful energy with eminent ageworthiness. Readers who can find the 1988 should not hesitate, as it is stellar.

The first estate vineyard in the Nicolas-Jay joint venture is Bishop Creek, located in Yamhill-Carlton AVA and planted on its own roots in 1988 and 1990. Jean-Nicolas Meo and his Oregon winemaker Tracy Kendall have produced a winning result in 2018, with ripe red and black cherry aromas, a hint of spice, and a texture that is lovely, rich, and dense but not heavy. This 2020 Onkaparinga Grenache is the seductive Grenache in the pack. What a wine. It doesn’t have the fine skeleton of the Blewitt Springs wine, but it is more silken and supple. Incredible. The tannic framework is disguised amid the voluminous (but controlled, harnessed, not opulent) fruit. The odious comparison to Burgundy here is hard to avoid—the Clarendon Hills Grenache wines are built on a framework of fine tannins, and the fruit has a natural appeal and attraction. They're seductive in the extreme. High-altitude Blewitt Springs. Drink 2022-2037.

Exotic perfume of dried roses, musk and spice, raspberry and blueberry. It’s medium to full-bodied, superb stony tannin bedded through supple and fragrant mixed berries, blood orange tang, and a nutty and ‘mineral’ finish of outstanding length. These do not come past our door all that often. Originally sold to investors who were given the chance to purchase a whole barrel of Yamazaki, as well as choose the resulting maturation period, the "Owner's Cask" series has since, reportedly, become a cellar door release. This particular one was bottled in honour of the Port of Yokohama celebrating the 150th anniversary of its opening. This bottle represents an opportunity to taste a more pure and transparent expression of Yamazaki whisky. Distilled in 1995 and bottled in 2008 at 61%, grab yourself a piece of Japanese whisky history.

2008 Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru Millesime Champagne (Disgorged April 2020)
    Champagne, FRANCE
    $1750. 00
    Bottle
    $21000.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

The Ambonnay based Egly-Ouriet are a reference point for grower producers in Champagne, known for their impeccable vineyard management and fastidious winemaking skills. Much of their production is raised in oak barrels, with extended aging on lees a feature. This wine is the second bottling of Egly’s (already legendary) Millésime 2008, first bottled with a July 2019 disgorgement, this edition was almost a year later in April 2020, after 129 months on lees. As usual with Francis Egly's millesime, the blend is 70% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay from the same 40-year-old vines in Ambonnay, aged in barrel until bottling and with no malo.

    Other Reviews....
Revisited from the July 2019 disgorgement, Egly's 2008 Brut Grand Cru Millésime was showing as brilliantly as ever. The wine seemed to shut down a little in early 2020, but it is already beginning to unwind, and this was the most expressive bottle that I've drunk to date. Offering up an incipiently complex bouquet of orchard fruit, citrus oil, pralines and freshly baked bread, now complemented by hints of iodine, clear honey and mirabelle plum, it's full-bodied, deep and layered, with immense depth and concentration, racy acids and elegantly muscular structuring dry extract. Long and penetrating, as I've written before, this wine is a monument to what Champagne's grower revolution has achieved over the last 30 or so years. Drink 2023 - 2048.

Just being released now, the 2008 Brut Millésime Grand Cru is quite possibly the most elegant, most refined Champagne I have ever tasted at Egly-Ouriet. Francis Egly captures the freshness and verve of 2008 as expressed in his vineyards in Ambonnay. That interplay yields a Champagne that is deep, resonant and pulsing with tremendous energy. The Pinot really comes through on a finish that just expands with superb resonance. In a word: brilliant! Disgorged: July, 2019. Drink 2019-2029.

A timeless, benchmark expression of Ambonnay. Primary fermentation in barrique, no malolactic fermentation. Aged 10 years on its lees and bottled with 5g/l dosage. A stunning, complex nose of candied walnuts, cherry pits, nougat and red apples. The palate has boundless energy, leading with a punch of apricots, golden raisins, almonds and orange zest. The length of the finish is extraordinary, oscillating between airy weightlessness and muscular power. The combination of Francis Egly's meticulous nature and the sturdy clarity of the 2008 vintage is a thing to behold. A wine to enjoy over the next four decades. Drink 2020 - 2060.

Brilliant water like core with a distinct greenish tinge around the outskirts. Lifted lime, green apple and lemon scents are trailed by wet steel and flinty mineral notes. Intense lime, citrus and Granny Smith apple fruits are backed by a steely acid structure. Talc and slatey mineral characters linger on the back half. Finishes dry and crisp with a long zippy aftertaste.

Totally opaque black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Archie Rose Fundamental Spirits Straight Dry Gin (700ml)
    Sydney, New South Wales, AUSTRALIA
    $64. 99
    Bottle
    $779.88 Dozen
    ABV: 37%

Under the umbrella title of 'Fundamental Spirits', comes a new range of 100% Australian vodka, gin and whisky created as an easy foundation for your favourite drinks. The Straight Dry Gin is cold distilled with sustainably sourced local and Australian ingredients. Botanicals include lemon myrtle, reclaimed orange peel, pink peppercorns, Roman chamomile and strawberry gum. Despite the middling ABV, this maintains decent concentration with a classically 'ginny' profile that strikes a nice balancing act between piney juniper and citrus, closing with a spike of pepper heat that makes it feel closer to 45% instead of 37% Alc./Vol. Be sparing with the mixers, as the gin's character is easily lost.

Notes from the producers... A complex nose with the evolving aromas of sappy pine, fresh thyme and lime zest and an aroma of freshly zested orange in the background with the faintest hint of waxy lemon. The palate has great precision yet generosity with a strong juniper backbone that is complemented by charred lemon, pineapple and grapefruit. A subtle floral character extends into the finish but is overcome by the pervasive juniper which pushes out into a long, dry and satisfying conclusion.
