2014 Domaine du Collier Charpentrie Saumur Rouge Museum ReleaseSaumur, Loire Valley, FRANCE$280. 00Bottle$3360.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkWithin a short period of time Antoine Foucault is already making some of the most exciting wines in the Loire Valley. The Domaine du Collier was created in 1999 by Antoine (son of Charly Foucault from the famed Clos Rougeard) and his wife Caroline. Having worked at Clos Rougeard for four years and still at the young age of 26 he took the opportunity to buy four-hectares of vines (through his family) in the commune of Brézé in the best lieu-dit of ‘La Ripaille’. The estate comprises 6 hectares with the vast majority of the estate planted to Chenin Blanc (including some 100 year old vines) and just under a hectare of Cabernet Franc.
Antoine is dedicated to natural viticulture, without the use of chemical treatments, fertilizers, or weed killers. The harvest is manual with strict sorting carried out in the vineyards. In his deep cellar, Antoine does not use commercial yeast, and doesn’t treat the wine with sulphur until bottling. The end results are brilliant and it is probably no surprise that demand for them is very high and as a result they can be very hard to find.
Museum release direct from the domaine 2024.
Other Reviews....
The 2014 Saumur Rouge La Charpentrie is simply stunning, revealing aromas of flowers, peonies, cassis, licorice and smoke intertwined with mineral-laced tones. Medium to full-bodied, beautifully textured and pure, it’s suave and seamless with a multidimensional core of fruit, concluding with lively acids and a long, saline finish. It's as impressive for its harmony as it is for its plenitude. Drink 2024-2034.

Yohan Castaing - Wine Advocate (Jun 14, 2024) - Bella Notte White Sambuca (700ml)ITALY$54. 99Bottle$659.88 DozenABV: 40%
Bella Notte is both the name of a cocktail containing Sambuca and also a Sambuca brand. This traditional Italian specialty is flavoured with essential oil extracted from Star Anise. Sweetened to taste, serve it after dinner or with your favourite coffee. 40% Alc./Vol.
- Bella Notte Prugna Liqueur (700ml)ITALY$58. 99Bottle$707.88 DozenABV: 35%
Prugna (Prunus domestica, or in English, plum) is the basis for one of those historic, regional elixirs that continues to attract a small band of followers. An institution in Veneto, the liqueur is obtained via the maceration of plums and / or a distillation of plum juice and presents perfumed, sweet aromatics coupled with flavours of apricots, almonds and dried fruits. Its pleasant taste and moderate ABV make it perfect as a pairing with dried pastries, walnuts, almonds or coffee at the end of a meal accompanied by dried Venetian biscuits like Bussolà and Zaetti. 35% Alc./Vol.

Archie Rose Fundamental Spirits Double Malt Australian Whisky (700ml)Sydney, New South Wales, AUSTRALIA$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 40%Fundamental Spirits is a new range of 100% Australian vodka, gin and whisky created as an easy foundation for your favourite drinks. A new addition for 2023 is Double Malt Whisky, featuring a solera of Archie Rose Single Malt and Rye Malt made from copper pot distilled NSW heritage rye and barley malts. Maturation takes place in ex-apera (sherry), bourbon and virgin oak casks. On the nose, gobstopper is followed by toasted muesli and hints of cocoa in a straightforward aroma that recalls young Bourbon. The fullness of the delivery defies the entry-level ABV - and the price tag. There are no rough edges, just attractive fruit-chocolate and hazelnut flavours, as rounded as they are relaxed, while a light oiliness adds texture (possibly a contribution from the rye). A whisky that lends itself to experimentation. 40% Alc/Vol
- Bella Notte Black Sambuca (700ml)ITALY$57. 99Bottle$695.88 DozenABV: 38%
Led by the legendary Opal Nera, in many markets, Black Sambuca remains the number one seller in its category. And like its main rival, the key ingredients of Bella Notte Nera are star anise and green anise. Elderflowers, elderberries, orange flowers, coriander, cinnamon, cloves and Sicilian lemons also make the cut. The elderberries play an important part in obtaining the liqueur’s deep purple colour. All of the ingredients are infused and distilled separately then blended together for a perfect balance. Often served icy cold as an after-dinner drink, the flavours of anise and elderflower also work as an accompaniment to coffee. 38% Alc./Vol.

Since then they have grown to now include 26 hectares of vineyards stretching across Saint-Véran, Pouilly-Fuissé, Viré-Clessé, Moulin à Vent, along with their home in Macon's La Roche Vineuse. While not certified organic, from the beginning they have shunned the use of chemicals in their vineyards and maintain their soils with tilling between the rows. Winemaking is traditional with the handpicked grapes pressed as whole clusters before fermentation and maturation mainly in cask, where new oak use is decreasing year on year.

Merlot 63%, Cabernet Sauvignon 28%, Cabernet Franc 8%, and Petit Verdot 1% It’s the 100th anniversary wine from Grace.
Raspberry, dried cranberry, quite spicy with cinnamon and clove, charcoal, some sundried tomato, kombu and pepper. It’s medium-bodied, cherry and plum, nutty grainy tannin, distinct savoury spice, but also quite a ‘mineral’ thing with some ripe tomato tang, yet sweet squished strawberry vanilla flavour too, and a finish of excellent length. It’s umami, yet there’s something of a strawberry Kit Kat sweetness in the mix. and gee, I really like it all up. A very different expression of these grape varieties, but really good. - Glenmorangie Barrel Select Release Palo Cortado Cask Finish 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$179. 99Bottle$2159.88 DozenABV: 46%
The Barrel Select series offers special cask maturations that reflect Glenmorangie's penchant for experimentation. This is the first time that the distillery has finished a whisky in Palo Cortado casks. Considered the rarest variety of sherry, it's created purely by chance, resulting in a complex style that's a cross between fino and Oloroso. It begins its life under flor, aging without the presence of oxygen, then mysteriously the flor dies off, leaving the whisky to age oxidatively like an Oloroso. Head of Whisky Creation, Dr Bill Lumsden sourced a handful of barrels which are reported to be very hard to come by. After eight years of pre-maturation in ex-bourbon wood, the sherry's four year contribution brings sweet and nutty aromas and flavours, with hints of dark plum, milk-chocolate, Brazil nuts and sweet spice. The result is a welcome alternative to Glenmorangie's core sherry-matured label, 'Lasanta'. 46% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the producers... NOSE: Rich, elegant and rounded. Toffee, fudge and vanilla sweetness entwine with mossy notes and mulled wine hints. Then come scents of honeyed ginger and milk-chocolate truffle dusted with cinnamon. A splash of water reveals notes of orange sherbet, carnations and Brazil nuts. TASTE: An oily yet peppery texture leads to a burst of rich, sweet flavours. Treacle toffee and milk chocolate are threaded with notes of clove, ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg. Meanwhile, fruity undertones of raisins, dark plums and bitter orange find delectable balance with baking ryebread and salted nuts.

Springbank Local Barley 11 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - 2022 ReleaseCampbeltown, SCOTLAND$699. 00Bottle$8388.00 DozenABV: 55.1%Collectors note: Springbank's labels almost always arrive with minor wearing and markings, most often to the top of the front labels. This is unavoidable. If you are likely to be disappointed by minor label scuffing, we recommend you don't buy these whiskies.
15,000 bottles make up the 2022 addition to one of our all-time favourite series of contemporary Springbanks. Produced from Belgravia barley harvested from Glencraig's Farm near Campbeltown, the resulting spirit was matured in a mix of 55% Sherry, 35% Bourbon and 10% x-Rum barrels giving it a markedly deeper colour than many previous Local Barley bottlings. Considering the reputation for high quality and the very limited nature of this series, we don't expect any of the LBs to be easily re-stocked in the future. 55.1% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.
Other reviews... I find it very smart that they would keep using the old livery (while it's not the oldest for the LBs). This one was distilled from Belgravia barley from Glencraigs Farm, right on the road to Campbeltown. Colour: white wine. Nose: something else, really, this is almost a blend of mezcal, aquavit and genever, even if seawater and pure lemon juice would then chime in. In the end, it is pure oyster juice, with some tabasco and Worcester sauce, plus a good glass of zero-dosage champagne. With water: once again, more mud, rainwater and porridge, with a touch of curry this time, poppadums, Mouth (neat): but where does this mezcal stem from? More bone-dry champagne too, more aquavit, more oyster water, more lemon and lime juices. It's also fat and oily, and certainly not as 'dirty' as your usual Springbanks (which, granted, I love too). With water: some curry again, aniseed, capsicum, bell pepper… I would suppose that's the oak, not the Belgravia barley. It's different, vive la difference, I like it. Finish: long, with salty lemons ruing it all and much more smoke in the aftertaste. Comments: I just tried 2017's 11 yo Local Barley again, I find this newer expression of an eleven largely superior, but I wouldn't say it's better, stricto sensu, than the astounding 2007 from Cadenhead's. 91 points - whiskyfun.com
- Five Farms Single Batch Irish Cream Liqueur (700ml)County Cork, IRELAND$61. 99Bottle$743.88 DozenABV: 17%
Other reviews... “Single batch” Irish cream from County Cork, Ireland, packaged in a swingtop bottle that looks a bit like a milk container. There’s even a picture of a cow on the label. What could be more authentic, or loveable? Five Farms makes only this single product, so you know you’re getting something truly unique before you even pop the top. Which we did. Let’s see what’s inside this precious package. There’s a distinct and somewhat heavy whiskey note on the nose here — not a bad thing, but a bit unexpected in a world of peppermint-cinnamon-flan-flavored liqueurs where the spirit is an afterthought. A bit sharp with alcohol (again a surprise, given the proof), the nose hints at vanilla and chocolate and a bit of cinnamon, while letting dairy cream notes percolate through the mix. The palate is quite nicely rounded, melding the whiskey and the creamery notes well, taking the mix into a realm of butterscotch, salted caramel, and some spice, the lattermost of which lingers on the back end, where honey-scented whiskey and cocoa powder form a delightfully fresh union. Hard to put down, it’s lovely, very solid stuff. - drinkhacker.com
...Five Farms Irish Cream is all about freshness. This bottle is made using single batches of fresh dairy cream, blended with triple distilled Irish whiskey within 48 hours of collection. This freshness translates into the ultra light and creamy mouthfeel, rightfully earning the firm widespread acclaim - Five Farms scored a record 97/100 in the 2018 World Spirits Challenge. The palate is as creamy as they come, silky with milk chocolate and hints of coffee, the quality of the whiskey really shines through. Not only is this delicious on the tongue but the bottle is easy on the eyes as well. The authentic wide mouthed glass bottle comes with a swing top closure and embossed detailing - definitely one to keep wash out and keep around when you’re done. - BBC Good Food Guide.

The grounds are dumped straight from the coffee machine into a refrigerated container to retain as much flavour as possible before they're whisked away to be infused in spirit for over a month. 2015 Warenghem Distillery Armorik Single Cask Australian Exclusive Cask Strength Single Malt French Whisky (700ml)Brittany, FRANCE$199. 99Bottle$2399.88 DozenABV: 58.7%French whiskies are so rarely encountered here that when they do arrive they come with a sense of mystery. Yet, if there are regional challengers to the malts that emerge from Scotland's Western Highlands, then Northern France would have to be one. Whiskies from Brittany can be hugely flavoursome, capturing a sense of place with the freshness of the seashore and a touch of rusticity that's occasionally augmented by varying degrees of peat. Kornog and Warenghem are standouts, the latter offering whiskies under their Armorik label. When the Australian importers visited Brittany earlier in the year, their barrel selection came with a further French twist: Full-term maturation in a cask that previously held Pineau des Charentes - a speciality aperitif of Cognac, generally categorised as a fortified wine (aka 'mistelle' or 'vin de liqueur' in France, however, being a blend of grape must and eau-de-vie it could be argued that the genre is more akin to a liqueur). There is one cask only, all for Australia and the whisky it yielded continues a theme of beautifully rounded, utterly mouthfilling and wonderfully textural malts from Warenghem, this time with a light honey, fruit compote and sponge cake character in the mix. On the palate, poached fruits work to heighten the succulence of the barley before trailing off with lively spices, vanilla and honey. Hints of brine and pepper add vitality to the finish as does a slightly tart quince or citric note. It's wound up in a beautifully integrated delivery that's dangerously easy to drink uncut. With water the profile loses some of its finer points, but fluffs into a deliciously creamy dram. Distilled in October 2015 and bottled in February 2023, the visual presentation might lack sophistication, however the final result has exceeded the importer's expectations. 150 bottles are on offer. 58.7% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

2018 Claxton's Exploration Series Glenglassaugh 4 Year Old Single Cask Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 50%There is already a superb purity and poise to this north-east Highland toddler, with its simplicity more than compensated by a creamy mouthfeel and the expressiveness of its one-punch flavour profile. Medium long and medium spicy, time in sweet wine barriques has tempered the latent feisty-fruitiness. With a small addition of water, some east coast brine becomes evident. Rich, malty, big-hearted and fun. 50% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.
Notes from the bottlers... NOSE: Custard sweetness - trifle. Barley sugar. Hint of grape-sweetness. PALATE: Soft and sweet. More sweet grape notes and oak spice. FINISH: More custard sweetness on the finish. Nice mix of oak and barley.
Other reviews... Boy is this one young! Even younger, and it would be a kilogram of barley plus a glass of Sauternes. Some kind of finishing without any primary maturation in other words (come on, S.) but don't get me wrong, I very well know these modern babies can be super-good. Colour: gold. Nose: this is pure pastry, custard tarte, crema catalana, mirabelle liqueur, white chocolate, banana cake… With water: a tad more on croissants and brioches. And a small kougelhopf while we are at it. Mouth (neat): more sweet wine influence, as well as more spices, peppercorns, touches of ginger and cinnamon from the oak (I suppose it was French oak but many are also using Slovenian or Hungarian oak – same species though). Big pink gooseberries, oranges, plums… With water: more sweet maltiness, but indeed a sémillon-side too. Perhaps a tiny bit of pineapple? Finish: medium, on pastries, ripe bananas, custard, more white chocolate, a drop of muscat… The oak feels a little bit in the aftertaste. Comments: very good, of course, but the real achievement here is to make our guts (or hearts) believe it's ten years old, while our brain knows it's only four. Well done. 83 points - whiskyfun.com

Remnant Whisky Co. The Golden Fleece Single Malt Australian Whisky (500ml)Tasmania, AUSTRALIA$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 45%"This has got to be one of the best value-for-money Tasmanian whiskies to be released in a long time" - Luke McCarthy, ozwhiskyreview.com.au
When an industry legend says a whisky is a "ball tearer" and "there are $250 whiskies around that are not as good”, it gets your attention. Then you find out it’s Tasmanian, selling for $100 and it’s impossible to believe. Tim Duckett is talking about the new Remnant: Ex-Nant (old stocks), unofficially a ten year old and, yes, it’s pretty damn good - even from the 50ml sample we received. Besides a creamy sweetness that pervades the nose and palate suggesting high quality Bourbon maturation with a generous dose of Apera or PX, it caresses the tongue with the kind of texture and softness you associate with much, much older whiskies. A hint of fruit conjures nectarine and cinnamon apple; the mid palate length is excellent, dovetailing into a slightly drier range as the malt pulls up and lingering vanillas and dried fruits are left in the fade. Long in the finish and at times, almost cognac-like, the Golden Fleece is sure to put a firecracker up many a Scots effort selling for $100 or more. Will the next batch come close? Will there even be a next batch? Don’t wait to find out. Almost too good to be true, this is bargain territory for drinkers. 14 casks bottled. 45% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... The Remnant Whisky Company continue their rye, tongue in cheek reflection on the Nant whisky saga with the just-released ‘The Golden Fleece’. Love the name, love the price ($99/500ml), especially considering the component whiskies used for this batch are, as far as Remnant could tell, at least 10 years old. Whether you’re a Tassie whisky tragic or just keen on getting a taste of something complex and affordable (a rare combination from down there), this is great value drinking. This has got to be one of the best value-for-money Tasmanian whiskies to be released in a long time. - Luke McCarthy, OzWhiskyReview.com.au
Notes from the bottlers... Aromas of creme caramel, almond biscotti, and Meyer lemon with hints of tropical fruits and Turkish delight. On the palate pistachio nougat and toffee apple lead into a finish of sweet vanilla, gingerbread and raspberries dusted in icing sugar.
The story of Remnant is not the typical independent bottling tale. Initially it revolved around the acquisition of 300+ barrels of Tasmanian single malt whisky salvaged from the now infamous Nant barrel investment scheme. Founded by Belgrove's Peter Bignell and his good mate Phil Collidge, backed by a consortium, they purchased the remaining barrels and transferred them to Peter’s own bond stores in the central highlands of Tasmania where the whisky has quietly continued to mature. Those barrels now hold some of the oldest whisky produced in Tasmania. For Peter and Phil, Remnant Whisky is all about releasing great whisky that may not have ever seen the light of day, and returning value to the everyday Australian who invested their money and their heart into a broken scheme. The story of where this whisky started out is not a pleasant one, but through Remnant they have been able to restore faith in the Tasmanian industry. Remnant Whisky Co has risen out of the ashes and made it through adversity to become a beloved bottler. All of Remnant's production process is done by hand, from tasting each cask to the vatting and marriage of barrels, right through to the hand labelling and waxing of each bottle. On the whisky labels, Remnant likes to feature Australian animals that often are spotted in the Central Highlands of Tasmania near its bond stores, including Tasmanian Devils, Tawny Frogmouths, Platypus and farm stock like cattle and the humble Merino sheep which features on Remnant's latest release, The Golden Fleece.

Sourced from 1984-planted vines. A natural-yeast, whole-berry ferment with 21 days on skins before being pressed to French oak barriques (25% new). Matured for 18 months before bottling. A deep crimson red. Gorgeous aromatics from the first whiff with its complex array of red and black fruits, violets, cedar and a dusting of black cocoa powder. This is simultaneously concentrated, elegant and textured and while already a pleasure to drink, those perfectly judged, fine-grained tannins will ensure a long life ahead. Fully deserving of its trophy for Best Cabernet Sauvignon at the 2022 Yarra Valley Wine Show.

Blackberry, redcurrant jelly, dried mint and thyme, light creamy vanilla oak. It’s medium-bodied, supple and succulent, black and red fruits with vanilla cream, something of a floral mouth-perfume, cocoa tannin, and a finish of good length, a little tobacco in with mixed berries in the aftertaste. Quite polished, but a nice example of Yarra Cabernet. Drink 2023-2035.

White Possum Naked Maraschino Liqueur (500ml)AUSTRALIA$69. 99Bottle$839.88 DozenABV: 31%An intense cherry liqueur that fuses traditional Italian Maraschino flavours with a smattering of Australian desert peaches (aka quandongs). The result of over two years of experiments and trials, sour cherries are first crushed into a paste and then slowly fermented over many weeks to extract maximum flavour. This 'cherry wine' is then distilled in a pot still then rested and aged in a small vat. Finally, a rich infusion of quandongs contributes a distinctly fruity aroma, alongside a couple of other herbs and roots. Offered at a high ABV to preserve intensity, zero filtration takes place before bottling, so you may notice some sediment and oils that may drift out of the liqueur over time. Contains no artificial flavours or preservatives. Vegan friendly. Gluten free. 31% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the importers... Nose: Stewed fruits, raisins and oranges with a gentle blend of tabacco and smoke bacon peat. Palate: Good sweet malty intensity, balanced with drying peat. Lively with the high ABV. The fireside peat (more like Highland than Islay) interplays with the sherry richness really well. Raisins and orange peel. Finish: Peat and fruit fighting for dominance. The fruit seems to win for me, in this very long battle!

I tasted two components that will make up the bulk of the 2020 Cornas Renaissance, both still in foudre. From Patou and 15- to 20-year-old vines, a medium to full-bodied sample featuring mentholated red plum notes, chewy tannins and mouthwatering acids (90 - 92). From Reynard and 30-year-old vines, a medium to full-bodied sample that showed more cassis fruit, silky tannins and great freshness (93 - 95). They should make a lovely Cornas for drinking over the next 10-15 years. Drink 2023 - 2035.

I tasted four different components of the 2020 Cornas from foudre. From 40-year-old vines in La Côte, a medium to full-bodied sample with attractive menthol, red plum and violet notes, ample structure but a bit short (92 - 94). From 50- to 60-year-old vines in La Sabarotte, an earthier, more savory example, with a rich, velvety texture and crisp acids (93 - 95). From 60- to 70-year-old vines in La Côte, a wine that seems to have it all: intense cassis, crushed stone, licorice and black olives, plus amazing richness and length (97 - 99). Joe Czerwinski - Wine Advocate (Jan 21, 2022)Glass-staining ruby. JamesSuckling.comThe flagship 2020 Cornas is a beauty! Clearly in the same league as recent top vintages, it has a wild bouquet of black and blue fruits, liquid violets, game, and iron, with some incense and spice thrown in for good measure. It's slightly more round and sexy compared to the more powerful 2019, but it’s perfectly balanced, with ripe tannins and a great finish. This heavenly Cornas will be drinkable in just 3-4 years and evolve for two decades. Drink 2026 - 2046.

Chave Selection Hermitage FarconnetHermitage, Northern Rhone, FRANCE$185. 00Bottle$2220.00 DozenABV: 15%Closure: CorkDomaine Jean-Louis Chave represents one of the longest examples of vinous lineage in the world, with the family making wines in the area since 1481. Now under the guidance of Gerard Chave and his son Jean-Louis, the pair draws on five centuries of expertise to craft each of their wines. While known for the enviable collection of prime plots on the hill of Hermitage, their other main skill is in precise blending each year to best express the region and vintage. The backbone of their red Hermitage is sourced from the steep, granite slope of the Les Bessards cru, and is essential for making the finest red each year. Likewise, the base for Chave’s heroic Hermitage Blanc is the plot of century-old Marsanne vines in their Péléat monopole, which provides rich and intense fruit without heaviness.
J.L. Chave Selection is the exclusive negociant label of Jean-Louis Chave, and represents a more accessible way to experience the wines of the Chave family. Mon Coeur Cotes-du-Rhone is a blend of excellent plots in Vinsobres, Visan, Buisson, and Estargues, while Silene Crozes-Hermitage is 50% estate Syrah and 50% purchased, and the white Crozes-Hermitage Sybele a blend of 60% Marsanne and 40% Roussane. As with all things Chave, quality is paramount even at the entry level.

Here too moderate wood frames the pretty essence of red cherries, earth, crushed fennel and clove. Much like the Clos St. Jacques, there is unusually good richness to the vibrant medium-bodied and sappy flavors that exude a bracing minerality on the bitter pit fruit-inflected finish. This is lovely though it presently lacks top flight depth so I would strongly advise allowing this at least some bottle aging to address that need. Drink through 2033+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2021 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) is one of the highlights of the range this year. 2018 Promontory Proprietary RedNapa Valley, California, UNITED STATES$2299. 00Bottle$27588.00 DozenClosure: CorkFrom the Harlan family, one of the most respected names in Napa, Promontory represents a singular vision: to express a completely distinct, previously undeveloped territory on the western edge of Oakville. Discovered in the 1980s but only launched as its own estate in 2008, the vineyard sits on dramatic terrain, far removed from the valley floor and carved by geologic fault lines. The site’s complexity, elevation, and isolation set it apart from anything else in the region, and the team behind Harlan Estate and Bond have spent years unlocking its potential with patient, detail-oriented farming and restrained winemaking. Joe Czerwinski - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2018 Promontory is another riveting wine from the Harlan family and winemaker David Cilli. It has been nothing short of spectacular in two recent tastings. "What is a 100-point wine?" I am often asked. Well, it is a wine that is complete, where nothing sticks out, and where all the elements are in perfect balance. The 2018 Promontory is a great example. A wine of stature and breadth, the 2018 covers every corner of the palate. Beguiling aromatics and precise, sculpted tannins - so hard to achieve in a mountain wine - round things off in style. Dark fruit, gravel, spice, licorice and leather add subtle layers of nuance. Today, the 2018 comes across as a more refined version of the 2016. It is a magnificent wine in every way. Drink 2028-2043.

Antonio Galloni - VinousViolets and blueberries with cloves and pine cones, following through to a medium to full body with tight, seamless tannins, like finely cut diamonds. It’s very closed and reserved at the end. Weightless. Needs plenty of time to open. Unique wine. Better after 2027.

James SucklingThe 2018 Promontory shows the fresh, elegant, yet still structured style of the vintage nicely. The vibrant cassis and blueberry fruits that define the nose give way to more lead pencil, scorched earth, graphite, and tobacco with air. Very Bordeaux-like aromatically and texturally, it's medium to full-bodied on the palate and has beautiful purity of fruit, substantial yet ripe and polished tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. It's going to gain depth and richness with 5-7 years of bottle age and should be very long-lived given its freshness, purity, and balance. It's another brilliant wine from this team. Drink after 2026.

Jeb DunnuckGorgeous blackcurrant bramble fruit tones on the nose. A hint of plum, juniper, allspice, cinnamon, pepper and violets. Stylish and compelling, a real sense of purity from the first mouthful. So carefully controlled and delivered. Tannins are ample but finely textured and well integrated - this really stands out in the tasting and is a step-up in terms of nuance, complexity and character. Tannins coat the mouth in a powdery chalky minerality while the subtle density and quiet muscular power gives the base and focus. Nothing stands out, you know you're in California which is excellent, but it's not overt or too much. Tastes sophisticated, stylish and overall expensive! A thrilling wine that really shines and is all the more likeable because it's not showing off or shouting too loudly. Liquorice and tar end the wine on a savoury note, suggesting long cellaring and long ageing potential. I love it. A class above. Director Will Harlan, winemaker David Cilli. Drink 2026-2042.
