Moderate though hardly invisible wood and menthol notes stop just short of dominating the liqueur-like aromas of red and dark currant, plum, just turned earth and old leather wisps. There is excellent volume and richness to the equally sleek and beautifully concentrated flavors that possess evident power and a taut muscularity on the lingering, complex, youthfully austere and impeccably well-balanced finish. This overtly mineral-driven effort is a wine of power and grace that should also amply reward extended keeping. Drink through 2034+.

The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques has turned out nicely, offering up rich aromas of smoky berries, plums, cedar spice box, orange zest and grilled squab, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and supple palate that's layered and seamless. Out of barrel, Clos Saint-Jacques can be one of the domaine's more muscular wines, but this year's rendition is very charming.

The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru showed a little reduction on the nose, but there is real intensity here and great depth. Mulberry, raspberry, wild strawberry, and loamy notes come through with time. The medium-bodied palate has supple tannins and is very smooth in texture, though there is still a little new oak to be assimilated on the finish. Excellent depth and concentration overall; I need to reassess this in bottle to see if it ranks amongst legends of the past. Drink 2027-2052.

The Clos-Saint-Jacques always marks the start of the three thrilling top wines. Out of barrel a year after vintage, the wine is still a bit characterised by the wood (70% new); however, lovely, rich, ripe blackberry and pomegranate fruits shine through with abundant mineral complexity. The texture is firm and tannic but not unapproachable. This wine is among the greatest produced in the village; ideally, one would wait ten years from the vintage before opening, and it will drink for at least 50 years after that. Drink 2035-2100.

Superb concentrated fruit on the palate, with the faintest sign of a drier patch at the finish, but the fruit should continue to develop very well to cover it. As is often the case, this possesses the spiciest nose in the range with its perfumed and airy array of red and blue pinot fruit, exotic tea, star anise and discreet floral nuances, all of which is trimmed in moderate wood. The big-bodied flavors possess excellent density with a texture that is perhaps even finer than that of the Chambertin while delivering equally fine persistence. This is a seriously classy Bèze with the potential to deliver 15 to 20 years of upside development. Brilliant. Drink through 2037+.

Full-bodied, rich and enveloping, with a broad attack that segues into a deep, layered mid-palate that's framed by powdery tannins and lively acids, it concludes with a long, saline finish.

The medium-bodied palate has a little more tension and energy than the Chambertin, with brilliant precision yet real concentration and finesse. Tasting the 2022 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, one cannot doubt its perfection. The super-ripe aromas of mulberry and pomegranate roll from the glass, accented with hints of smoke, spice, and earth, pervaded by a saline mineral quality. As Cyrielle describes the wine, 'She has more of everything; [while] the Chambertin is more focused.' The wine has exceptional density, firm but supple tannins, and immense length. This extraordinary wine is among the greatest I have tasted from this estate. It will undoubtedly continue to improve for fifty years and beyond. Drink 2030-2080.

There is an immense depth of flavour and a superbly dense and compact texture. As the wine sits in the glass, it seems almost infinitely complex. This tightly wound wine is not as generous as the Clos de Bèze. The truth is that the Bèze is perhaps more immediately engaging, while the Chambertin has more substance and ultimate potential. However, both wines will probably outlive anyone tasting them today since they seem set to age for a century. Drink 2035-2100.

A blend of 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc, the 2024 Beau-Séjour Bécot was picked in late September. Clusters were open rather than compact, lessening botrytis pressure, making it easier to wait to attain full maturity. Offering up aromas of dark berries, violets, rose petals and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, polished and layered, with beautifully refined tannin, integrated acidity and a long, aromatic finish. Once again, this impeccably managed estate has delivered a terrific performance in challenging conditions.

The 2024 Beau-Séjour Bécot is deep, vivid and wonderfully alive. Dynamic and explosive, with striking inner perfume, Beau-Séjour Bécot is hauntingly beautiful. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, menthol, licorice and rose petal soar out of the glass. Silky, refined tannins add to the wine's finesse. The increase of Cabernet Franc in the blend has added aromatic depth and textural elegance. There's a feeling of transparency here that is impossible to miss. Beau-Séjour Bécot has grown into one of the most distinctive wines in Bordeaux. Simply put, the 2024 is magnificent. That's all there is to it. Élevage is 55% in new oak, 15% in once-used barrels and the rest in 20HL casks. Tasted two times. Drink 2034-2054.

Ripe black cherries, leafy herbs, damp earth, and crushed stone notes define the aromatics, and this beauty hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, an ultra-fine mouthfeel, gorgeous tannins, and a great finish. This is brilliant, and I'd put it up with the crème de la crème of the vintage, especially in this elegant, finesse-driven style. Tasted twice with consistent results.

Gorgeous fragrance, really quite deep and vivid, almost an opulence to the perfumed nose. Generous and filling, smooth, silky, round and so vibrant. Juicy and lifted but still with structure - this has acidity, a cool freshness, super fine silky tannins and a soft push from start to finish. Feels super classic and classy, refined and elegant with cool blue fruit and lots of saltiness, but so distinguished. You really feel the limestone in the glass. Still serious, you feel the Cabernet spiciness but you don't get the impression they struggled with ripeness at all. A great glass. Sappy, fruity, clean and salty. A true wine of place. A yield of 32hl/ha, 3.40pH. Drink 2032-2046.

One of the most impressive wines of the vintage, the 2024 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a striking effort that sets itself apart with seamless integration, even at this early stage, and a strong sense of identity. Poised, precise and unmistakably singular, it opens in the glass with a perfumed bouquet of iris, violet, dark berries, cherries, vine smoke and gentian. Medium to full-bodied, supple and notably fleshy for the vintage, it’s layered and textural, with a sappy, enveloping core of pure, vibrant fruit framed by finely grained, velvety tannins, culminating in a long, precise and gently stemmy finish. This is one of the rare wines of the vintage where sappiness is expressed with such finesse and charm, thanks in no small part to meticulous vineyard work and severe sorting in the winery. The blend is composed of 48% Cabernet Franc, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Merlot, and it's maturing in a combination of 70% new oak, 19% foudres and 11% amphorae. Drink 2026-2044.

Seamless and silky in the glass, with superb balance, the 2024 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is one of the wines of the vintage. All the elements are so well balanced, always a sign of a superior vintage at this address. Floral notes, spice, leather and mocha run through a core of layered, beautifully persistent dark red fruit. Harvest took place between September 17 and 25, during one of the rare windows with little rain. As always, Les Carmes is done with a high percentage of stems (52%), specifically 100% for the Cabernet Franc, 50% for the Merlot and 20% for the Cabernet Sauvignon. Aging is 70% new oak barrels, 19% 18HL foudre and 11% amphora. New oak is already very nicely integrated, another sign of a superb vintage. The 2024 is a brilliant effort by the team led by Technical Director Olivier Pouthier. Drink 2034-2054.

This is always an idiosyncratic wine. This year it’s stunning, with a unique floral aspect and excellent depth of pure blue fruit, mulberries, dried herbs and white pepper. So juicy and mouthwatering on the palate, with a medium to full body and fine tannins. There is a crystalized mouthfeel, but the tannins are fresh and well knit. This is already delicious, which indicates its superb balance. 48% cabernet franc, 29% cabernet sauvignon and 23% merlot.

The 2024 Château Carmes Haut-Brion comes from 7.8 hectares of vines in the heart of Pessac and is 48% Cabernet Franc, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance 23% Merlot that was vinified with 52% whole clusters and will spend two years in 70% new barrels as well as smaller portions in vats and amphora. It's one of the darker-hued wines in the vintage and has a terrific nose of ripe black fruits, smoky earth, violets, crushed stone, and hints of lead pencil. It's medium to full-bodied, has ultra-fine tannins, a layered, seamless mouthfeel, and a great finish. I think it's clearly one of the top wines in the vintage.

Medium to full-bodied, juicy and round, it's firm and has an assertive tannic frame, concluding with a somewhat chewy finish. Despite a respectable yield and a clear stylistic shift toward less oak influence, the estate’s sandy terroirs struggled to achieve full ripeness in this delicate vintage. Drink 2026-2034.

Aged in a 50/50 mix of seasoned French and American oak barrels for a period of 14 months. Pitch black heart with a dark red black tinged hue. Spicy dark plum and liquorice aromas evolve from the glass followed by some meaty graphite like notes and peppered earth scents. Rich, plush and spicy, the medium to full bodied palate is decorated with fleshy dark plum and liquorice fruits. Spicy vanillin cedar, subtle scorched earth and peppered fennel accents lie beneath. Opulent mouth feel and velvet like tannins finishing long, lush and spicy.

Whole berries are fermented here before a maturation period of fourteen months in an evenly divided mix of French and American oak. The colour here is a deep magenta, while the nose exhibits notes of warm, dusty roads, black cherries, bay leaves, ripe plums and dark chocolate. This is a silky, finely rendered Shiraz, with a supple texture and very good length. The palate sees those bright, black cherries really come to the fore while there is a fine line of acidity running the length. This wine is an eight to ten year proposition, over which time it will surely improve further. Drink 2024-2034.

Around 14 years old seems to be a good age for Craigellachie, a fact confirmed by the official release 13 year old which remains the distillery's leading line. Long fermentations are responsible for a fragrant, fruity aspect in the distillate, giving it a tropical and slightly floral edge that's most noticeable in mature examples. In this 14 year old from Rattray, tradition and heritage meet experimentation and modernity via an “old-style” spirit drawn from an x Bourbon barrel acquired back in 2010. It's been given an extra layer of complexity through finishing in a first-fill Burgundy red wine cask. Matching casks with secondary woods is a continual learning process. Here the bottlers say the spirit has gained appreciable notes of Pinot Noir, complementing Craigellachie's characteristically full-bodied base. Cask No.18 yielded 296 bottles at 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

After a six year absence, Kilchoman's Sauternes matured expression is back, this time boasting a full-term maturation instead of a five month finish. Founder, Anthony Wills selected a combination of fresh and refill Sauternes barriques (22% vs 78%) from two separate years, the youngest being 2018. The result is not too dissimilar to the last version, with flashes of dried apricots and peaches detectable through the savoury, earthy peat reek. A bit of a sweetie at mid palate where the oils thicken until typical Kilchoman peat overtakes, ash and pepper in tow, with an unexpectedly, dry chewy finish that shows some wet stone minerality. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... The nose thrills with gooseberry, honeysuckle, kiwi, linseed oil, passion fruit, lemon sorbet sprinkled with sea salt, and the caramelized meringue peaks of a baked Alaska. It has a slightly waxy mouthfeel with lush summer fruits from the sauternes cask showing Golden Delicious apple, banana, apricot, star fruit, and honey, with a late arrival of peat smoke. Domaine Tempier is Bandol’s most well known estate and has been run by the Peyraud family since 1936. Their classic red cuvée is a blend of complex terroirs, mixing the variety of clay-limestone soil located around the Estate, but also those in La Cadière, Sainte Anne d’Evenos, and Ollioules. The varietal composition here is predominately from Mourvedre with some Grenache, Cinsault, and Carignan also included.
From the 2020 vintage the family has decided to rename their classic red cuvée: "Lulu & Lucien" to honour Mrs Lucie 'Lulu' Peyraud, passed away soon after the 2020 harvest at the age of 103. She joined her husband Lucien in what the family calls ‘Winemakers’ Paradise.’

A classic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz first produced in 1962, Yalumba’s Signature pays homage each vintage to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the culture and traditions of Yalumba. The 2022 vintage’s signatory is Yalumba’s Executive Director of Sales for Australia & New Zealand, Paul Midolo. This year’s release marks the 51st vintage of Yalumba The Signature.
From vines with an average age of 49 years the 2021 Signature is a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Shiraz with maturation taking place in a combination of French barriques and Hungarian hogsheads (21% of which was new oak) for a period of 18 months.
Deep and powerful yet finessed, this is Yalumba Signature at it’s finest.
Inky black heart with a deep dark purple black tinged hue. Unfurling from the glass in what is a wonderful show of both refinement and intensity is a mix of red to black currant, liquorice and mulberry scents trailed by some vanillin cedar, tobacco, earth and faint bay leaf notes. Rich red plum, red to black currant, liquorice and mulberry fruits flow eloquently across the medium to full bodied palate. Piquing further interest and complexity are spicy vanillin cedar, subtle tobacco, earthy dark chocolate and bay leaf accents. Deep and powerful yet finessed it has a sturdy fine grained tannin structure that bodes well for longer term cellaring. Finishes very long, sophisticated and elegant.

Yalumba's famous Signature cabernet sauvignon and shiraz blend has a strong pedigree when it comes to cellaring and the 2022 release will certainly carry on long into the future. The fruit density and purity here are impressive. Blackberry, doris plum and black cherry tones, their flow elegant and graceful across the palate with hints of spice, cedar, tobacco, pencil shavings, roasting meats, dried herbs and olive tapenade. Fine-grained tannins are in abundance and there is an extended finish that rolls on and on. It's a super release. Drink by 2054.

The 2022 The Signature Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz is so pretty—floral, red fruited and fine. This is a beautiful iteration of this wine. Ironically, there's a coastal freshness about it—kelp, brine, crushed shells—given it is nowhere near the coast. It's capacious and mineral and so fresh. The tannins are fine and neat, and the wine has incredible focus and line through the long finish. It's very impressive, potentially one of my favorite releases of this wine to date. It has wholly Barossa fruit this vintage. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2025-2052.

Isle of Raasay's second annual Dun Cana release departs from their signature malt, exploring different cask types. For the second edition, peated and unpeated spirit is matured separately in ex-American rye casks, which previously held Woodford Reserve, before a secondary six-month maturation in Pedro Ximénez and oloroso sherry quarter casks. The distillery says the use of the smaller 125-litre casks “accelerates the maturation process” to deepen the resulting flavours of pepper spice, sultanas, vanilla toffee and salty chocolate. The whisky is named for Dùn Cana, the highest point on Raasay, as a tribute to the landscape of the distillery’s home. 52% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Many distillers have explored secondary maturations with casks that have previously held sweet sherry and fortified wines, but not much has been done with liqueurs - let alone nut liqueurs. Now, Cape Byron Distillery is the first in the world to make a Macadamia Liqueur Cask matured Whisky, launching in 2025 with a limited release of 550 bottles. The new experiment is their most broad appeal offering to date. It almost smells like a whisky liqueur as heather honey, light peach, cantaloupe and vanilla greet the nose, matched by one of the softest deliveries ever from this distillery. Some of Cape Byron’s juicy tropical fruit character is retained, leaning towards dried banana or mango. The sweetness detracts a little from the vibrancy, making approachability rather than complexity a strong point. Regardless, if you're after a malt with a soft texture and a sweeter edge, you should find this more than satisfactory. 45% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Established in 1982 by Rick Kinzbrunner after experience in Napa, Bordeaux, and the King Valley, Giaconda has become one of Australia’s most celebrated boutique estates. The 4-hectare vineyard, now managed with his son Nathan, is certified organic and focused on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, and Nebbiolo. High-altitude granitic soils, excellent winemaking, and ageing in a granite cave deliver wines of extraordinary purity, complexity, and finesse.
Red wines see extended maceration on skins to develop finer tannins, with maturation taking place in French Oak barrels for up to 24 months. The wines are only ever moved via gravity or gas, retaining all the pristine fruit that they work so hard to produce in the winery and the vineyard.
This Shiraz has been made from select parcels of fruit sourced from Giaconda’s Warner Vineyard, the cool 2022 vintage delivering a delicately spiced Shiraz.
Deep dark red black core with a dark red hue. Rising from the glass with plenty of intensity are attractive red plum, liquorice and clove scents which are complimented by some smoked meat, spicy vanillin cedar and peppered earth notes. Elegant yet nicely fleshed, the mid weighted palate features juicy red plum and red liquorice fruits over a vanillin cedar, clove, scorched earth, cinnamon and pepper back drop. Today, I am tasting this 2021 Tom Cullity Cabernet Sauvignon Malbec for the first time, as it will be released in several months from now. The growing season in 2021 in Margaret River was challenging. In relation to Cabernet Sauvignon and later-ripening reds, it was wet at times, humid at times, and disease pressure was persistent. Diligent viticulture was the winner. This is certainly lighter and finer than many of the other wines in the lineup—2017 being the exception—but the tannins feel seamless and powdery, perfectly dovetailed into the fruit. This is a beautiful wine and triumphant in the year that was. It is super, one of the finest 2021 Cabernets to be released from Margaret River in this year. Composed of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Malbec, picked between March 30 and April 9, it fermented with whole berries and wild yeast and matured in 100% French oak for 16 and a half months, 68% new. It has the same pH (3.52) and total acidity (6.1) as the 2017. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2046.

Often when a structured and very young flagship wine is up for tasting, I’ll assess it initially, maybe try it with food, and spend a couple of days thinking about it and retasting. They need respect. But this time, I poured a big glass of Tom Cullity and enjoyed it immediately, as it’s approachable and complete. Even a few days later, no signs of fading. This is exceptional. There’s a certain refinement within, almost open-knit. A whorl of dark fruit, from mulberries to red berries, very spicy, very savoury, ferrous, full of nori, licorice, florals and more. It’s complex, shaped by beautifully defined tannins, the length long, the pleasure factor 10 out of 10 with ageability the same. Drink 2025-2045.

Beautiful perfume, that’s the big invitation; a shopping trolley list of all kinds of berries, red and black, purple even, with whiffs of sea spray, sandalwood, mahogany, salt bush, black tea and dark chocolate. The palate delivers a similar array of descriptors, though its the filigree of fine tannin that delivers the impact here – a silky draw that builds on sleek sheets of grip and pixilated texture. That the wine is medium weight, near refreshing in its energy and trails off with immense, sweet fruit, earthy spice and black tea persistence is just added charm. A beautiful wine. Drink 2025-2040+.

Founded by Silesian pioneers in the 1890s, Kaesler is home to some of the Barossa’s most celebrated old-vine Shiraz, with plantings dating back over 120 years. Revived in 1999 by Ed Peter and Reid Bosward, the estate has built a reputation for bold, expressive wines like the iconic Old Bastard, Alte Reben, and The Bogan. Today, Kaesler remains a 5-star Halliday-rated winery, producing consistently acclaimed Barossa classics.
Sourced from some of Kaesler’s treasured old vineyards, the fruit is hand-harvested and carefully selected to ensure only pristine bunches make the cut. Fermented gently to preserve balance and finesse, the wine is then matured for 16 months in French puncheons. The result is a richly concentrated Barossa Shiraz with depth, supple tannins, and the hallmark power of old-vine fruit. The 2022 vintage followed a much wetter winter than usual, with rainfall 48% above average—a welcome relief after three dry years. Early in the season, cooler conditions slowed growth, before warmer weather later in summer provided excellent ripening. A hailstorm in late October reduced yields in some parcels, but the surviving fruit achieved excellent balance. The result is a concentrated, structured Shiraz with the depth and plush tannins that define Kaesler’s old-vine style.

“Old Vines” planted in the 1960s, so not as old as the “Alte Reben”. Perhaps it sounds older in German.
Richness and lifted aromas define this wine. It’s built with red fruit on the outside and a concentrated line of black fruit on the inside. The perfume holds the tension of cherry blossom, hazelnut oak and rose petal potpourri. The flavour is luscious but carries the same lift of red fruit as the aroma. The tannins are tense and spiked with iodine, that kind of earthy, salty nuance, balancing between dried fruit and dried blood. There’s something very pretty but a bit rusty about this wine, giving ethereal and umami at the same time and this combination is hard to resist. Drink 2025-2037+

The Kaesler Old Bastard Shiraz is a living piece of Barossa history, drawn from vines planted in 1893 and recognised worldwide as one of Australia’s great Shiraz benchmarks. Revitalised by Ed Peter and Reid Bosward in 1999, the vineyard continues to produce wines of remarkable power and pedigree, embodying both the character of the Barossa and the resilience of its oldest vines.
The 2021 season was widely hailed as brilliant, delivering a cool, dry ripening period that produced wines of purity, balance, and supple tannins. Hand harvested in the early morning of March 9th, the fruit was destemmed and fermented on skins for seven days with twice-daily remontage before pressing. After settling, the wine was matured for 18 months in French oak (50% new) and bottled in March 2023. A genuine 10/10 season has elevated this flagship to an exceptional expression of site, season, and craftsmanship.

I dragged a bottle of this wine over to New Zealand to drink with my father on his 70th birthday. He loved both the wine and the sentiment and the empty bottle still sits in his workshop. He's 87 now and still a magnificent old bastard, as is this wine. It's classic Barossa. Ancient vines planted 1893. It feels wise, like its parent vines have seen it all in their lifetimes, and I'm sure they have. Blackberry, black cherry and plum, layers of spice, pressed flowers, chocolate, earth, panforte and pan juices. It's full bodied but there's a loose-knit spaciousness to its form; all grace and latent power; tannins powdery fine and finish long and true. I love it. Drink 2024 - 2040.

Very old vines and a wine that is still very young. However, with time in the glass, it starts to shed its perfume gradually and gives detail one by one, layer by layer, showing the complexity that it carries. It’s not all quite merged yet, but time should do its job. First come the blue fruit, vanilla bean and braised meat. It has minty spice, liquorice, star anise, and tarragon family of aromas. The texture is this thick fabric of fruit that rolls out in a velvety manner in the mid-palate and tenses up on the sides. Who doesn’t love the label? More importantly, who doesn’t love the wine in the bottle? This stunning Barossa Shiraz comes from a vineyard planted way back in 1983 and it is probably fair to say that in all the years since then, there have been very few vintages which can compete with 2021. Under cork, this is an opaque purple/maroon. Ripe, fragrant, generous and yet well poised, there is good concentration to this classic Barossa Shiraz. We have notes of chocolate, black fruits, cassis, cocoa powder, bay leaves, crushed herbs, mocha and coffee beans. Intense, sleek and with near perfect oak integration, the wine has immaculate balance, silky tannins and such a seductive texture. Amazing length, this is stunning stuff. A cracking Barossa Valley Shiraz which will easily handle two decades or more in the cellar. If this doesn’t thrill you then the Barossa is not for you. 2025 - 2045.

Chartogne-Taillet is the home of some of the most exciting wines in Champagne. Alexandre Chartogne is a perfectionist in his approach to viticulture and winemaking, something he picked up from his mentor Anselme Selosse. Key to his approach is the importance of expressing terroir above all else. With that in mind, Alexandre separately vinifies a myriad of plots spread across 11 hectares of vineyards in Merfy and the neighbouring villages of Chenay and Saint-Thierry. Over half the parcels are ploughed by horse, and no pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizers are used. In the winery, all fermentations are wild, and malolactic fermentation is not blocked. Alexandre favours wooden barrels or demi-muids for fermentations, and low dosage levels are used which allow the grapes to speak of their place.
Unlike the main stable of Merfy-sourced wines, this is grown on a cadre of plots in Avize and Oger in the Côte des Blancs. The patchwork of seven plots, located on both the plains and the slopes, contributes to the overall harmony. Chemin de Châlons, Pierre Vaudon, Fosse le Prêtre and Mont Chenevaux, located on the plain, have plenty of sun exposure and a chalky soil profile with very thin (20cm) topsoils. Mont de Cramant is located at the beginning of the slopes, with deeper soils that are likewise rich in chalk. Les Roches Hautes and Les Barmonts are higher again and experience cooler conditions, resulting in taut, linear wines. The wines rests in 228-, 350- and 600-litre barrels before maturing on lees for 4-5 years and receiving a dosage of 1-3 g/L.

The Chardonnay vines were planted on the Heurtebise plot in 1972, 1985, 1986 and 2010. Exposure is a solar direct-south, but the strong winds that tear through this place mean there's always ample freshness to be found. The soil composition is Thanetian sands mixed with clay on sandstone, and the area is prone to fluctuations covering both water stress and retention. It's one of Alexandre's most variable sites overall, one that has very different requirements depending on the season. Likewise, once off the vine, the wines also tend to take on greater influence from any intervention in the cellar, particularly aging in oak. Crystalline minerality and mouth-watering tension are always evident from this site. Disgorgement is just four grams per litre.

Disgorged in April 2024 with a dosage of 2.4 grams per liter, it reveals a bouquet of white blossoms, lemon zest and freshly baked brioche. The palate is medium-bodied, incisive and poised, with laser-like acidity that carries a core of pristine fruit to a long, mineral finish. Chateau La Tour Blanche takes its name from the founder of the estate, Jean Saint Marc du Latourblanche, and is one of the most respected producers in Sauternes. The 40 hectares of vines used for their grand vin are planted in one large parcel with a prime location close to the Ceron river, and the soils are a mix of gravel, clay, sand, and limestone. Planted here is a combination of 83% Semillon, 12% Sauvignon Blanc, and an unusually high proportion of Muscadelle at 5%. The Semillon is aged in 35% new, French oak barrels for 16 to 18 months, while the Sauvignon Blanc and the Muscadelle are aged for 16-18 months in stainless steel vats before blending and bottling.

Fresh, elegant and nicely concentrated.
Wild yeast fermented and matured in barrel for a period of 8 months. Brilliant very pale straw colour with distinct highlights of green around the edges and a watery hue. Drifting out of the glass are aromas of nectarine, pear and grapefruit delicately infused with gun flint. Some citrus, biscuity oak and spice nuances ensue. Fresh and elegant, the palate is layered with energised citrus, pear and grapefruit flavours. Faint biscuity oak and flinty mineral elements lie beneath. Nicely concentrated and fleshed it has lively acidity and a highly refreshing finish.

It’s true this needs more time to settle. It’s nervy, flinty, full of energy and twitchy acidity. If opened today, let it breath to tease out the white nectarine and citrus, ginger fluff cake aromas, nougat and a touch of honeycomb. Some moreish sulphides in the mix, a slip of creamy lees, judiciously handled cedary oak and a fine palate all add to its appeal. Drink by 2033.

Oakridge’s Yarra Valley Chardonnay is consistently one of the best value’s coming out of the valley. Fruit is sourced from the cool slopes of the upper Yarra Valley notably Gladysdale (Willowlake) and Wandin East (Barkala) with some also coming from Coldstream.
Fermented in barrel and matured on lees for 9 months. Brilliant pale straw colour with hints of green around the edges and a watery hue. Drifting through the nostrils are scents of white peach, nectarine and dried honey followed by biscuity nougat and subtle gun flint notes. A blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Mataro (46/39/15), I felt the Cinsault really talks bringing energy, buckets of cranberries and red apple crunch. Loaded with bright cherries, raspberries, chorizo, pan juices, cured meat, cinnamon and earthy spices, it is such an inviting and sessional red wine. Clever blending and fabulous drinking, you are winning with this in your glass.
