This delicious Pinot Noir was made from two clones (114 and MV6) and comprises a whole bunch component, which was fermented separately using maceration carbonique. Each component was matured separately in new (40%) and seasoned Italian coopered French oak 500 litre puncheons for a period of 12 months.
Semi translucent red to dark red colour with black toned edges and a light red hue. The wonderfully perfumed nose evokes aromas of violet, red to dark cherry, strawberry and subtle rhubarb with some delicate anise, forest floor and dried herb and spice notes also chiming in. Silky textured and highly moreish, the palate features red to dark cherry, strawberry and rhubarb flavours. Notions of dried herbs, forest floor, bramble and spice are also apparent. Excellent power wave with cashmere like tannins. Finishes long and supple.

One-third whole bunch done as a carbonic component and blended back; 10 months in 40% new French oak puncheons. A pinot noir of layers, deceptively so, as it builds in flavour and nuance across the palate. A pristine purity resides here. Brilliant bright cherry red hues. Boysenberry, cherry and raspberry fruits mix with musky florals and sweet spice aromas. Concentrated and fleshy, it sets about releasing hints of forest floor and a gentle savouriness tied to vibrant, summery fruits and woody spice to taste, all delivered through a web of fine tannins. Flows evenly and with staying power. Drink by 2030.

This one comes from Greenock. Ferments in cement. Honestly, one of the best full flavoured, and affordable red, of Barossa, I’ve tried this year.
Succulent, dark fruited, intense. Geez this is rich and ripe but wow that is so well mediated by the chalkiness of tannin and saline, briny minerality and graphite things going on. Depth, silkiness, supple things going on. Ripe, dark cherry, panforte, cola, aniseed, alpine herbs and white pepper. Hazelnut chocolate and bacon bone here too. Fresh. This is delicious. 2020 Torbreck The Forebear ShirazBarossa Valley, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$850. 00Bottle$10200.00 DozenCellar: Drink now - 20 Years (2025-2045)ABV: 15.5%Closure: CorkBy any measure a mind blowing example of Barossa Shiraz.
The second release of this new flagship addition to the Torbreck portfolio, the Forebear is a single vineyard Shiraz that dates back to the 1850’s and pays homage to generations of Barossa vignerons. Maturation takes place in new French oak barriques for a period of 24 months.
Super dense inky black core with an equally deep dark red black hue. Wafting from the glass with extraordinary force are potent aromas of dark plum, liquorice and blackberry which are complimented by some vanillin cedar, earthy fennel, subtle dark chocolate, leather and spice notes. Exceptionally powerful and intense yet showing more refinement and freshness than the Laird, ultra rich dark plum, blackberry, liquorice, blueberry and dark chocolate flavours coat the palate with a tidal wave like energy. Extending across the back half are spicy vanillin cedar, earthy fennel, delicate mocha and pepper elements. Opulently textured and dense yet highly finessed and seamless it possesses beautifully polished, tightly structured tannins. Concludes with stratospheric length. Hold onto your hats when you drink this!
Drink over the next 10-20 years.

The 2020 The Forebear is sourced from the oldest plantings in the Hillside Vineyard in Lyndoch—12 rows planted in the early 1850s. For this tasting, the wine has been open now for three hours, and yet it needs more in the way of oxygen than what it currently has. The wine remains aromatically closed, with notions of black fruit, exotic spice, charry oak and forest floor. This has peat, old leather, jarrah and black cherries in profusion. The palate is shaped by intense graphite tannins, which feel closely knit and exclusively the property of old vines; they are silty and settle in the mouth—if you need a visual—like watching a pint of Guinness settle in the glass. A monumental wine, it needs space and quiet to be able to absorb the layers of complexity and undulating waves of flavor through the finish. 15.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and wax. Drink 2025-2040.

Erin Larkin – Robert Parker’s The Wine AdvocateComplex aromas of blackberry compote, roasted coffee beans, iodine, graphite, olive tapenade, dark chocolate, blood plums and baking spices. The palate has a deep, luscious mouthfeel with firmly framed tannins that lead into a viscous and textural finish. So much concentration and old-vine character that is built for the ages. Exceptional. Made from vines planted in 1850s on one acre in Lyndoch. Drink or hold.

Located in Victoria’s Western District, about 150km south-west of Melbourne, Irrewarra is a distinctive vineyard surrounded by volcanic plains and inland lakes. Exposed to the elements, the site benefits from high natural rainfall, adding to its cool-climate charm. Planted by the Calvert family in 2001, the vineyard features 6 acres of Pinot Noir and 2 acres of Chardonnay, all on own roots. Positioned on a slope overlooking two large lakes, the site expresses remarkable varietal character and complexity. Now under the care of the Farr family, Nick Farr manages the vineyard with the same attention and dedication as his Geelong estate.

Spice grip and char then softness, then more tart bright sinewy notes. The nose is petals and perfume, then darker, richer barrel notes. It has a really lovely aroma. Actually, calling it lovely diminishes it somewhat, this is unique, complex and entirely appealing for those looking for something more from a glass of Pinot Noir. There is a different oak profile maybe, something smokier, something more angular. It really works with this wine, even if I’m wrong about the new oak regime. Whatever it is, be it new or just more present, adds a layer to this wine. The Irrewarra only improves with each vintage, it seems, and this is no different. I sat with this for a little while and those spice notes just kept delivering, and each sip or sniff offered something new and delicious.

I had to check the notes for the previous release to make sure I wasn’t indulging in hyperbole two years in a row. The 2024 Irrewarra Chardonnay is brilliant. Lovely white gold in the glass the palate cool from the fridge yet immediately giving. It has a softness that defers to finer notes of acidity, ripe citrus and barley sugar; delicate honey and creaminess. In a world where making everyone happy is next to impossible, this wine, in my opinion, goes as close to universal appeal as it can. Generosity combined with finesse, flavour and restraint. It may seem contradictory, but this is a wine in which you see that conflict play out in the glass. It’s very, very delicious. As always, the big problem will be getting enough to drink and also keeping some in the cellar. I found myself glugging rather than sipping, as it is such a pleasure to drink.

A.D. Rattray Cask Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLAND$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenABV: 46%Double Gold Medal Winner in the 2016 & 2017 San Fransisco World Spirits Competition.
Yet another independent bottler hits Australian shores, boasting a strong reputation for quality. Founded by Andrew Dewar Rattray in 1868, the company began trading as an importer of French wines, Italian spirits and olive oil. More importantly, the firm established itself as a specialist in the field of blending and storage of malt and grain whiskies. After several changes in ownership, it returned to the family and is presently owned by Tim Morrison, previously of Morrison Bowmore Distillers and fourth generation descendent of the founder. The company’s resurgence came about in 2002 with the bottling of a ‘new’ Stronachie. In April 2004, using his extensive industry knowledge, Morrison then bottled a selection of his own handpicked whiskies and the A.D. Rattray Cask Collection was born. Plans for their new Glasgow-based distillery were approved in 2014.
Peated to 35ppm, Cask Islay is assembled from up to twenty casks from the one distillery, mostly x-bourbon barrel matured, though some ex-sherry hogsheads are reportedly in the mix. It is unashamedly Islay in its semi-sweet, sooty peat character that's complexed by suggestions of orange cake, cough lozenge, hints of smoked fish and later, banana cake. Because this series is bottled at 46% with zero chill filtration, the whiskies are surprisingly concentrated. Here, the medium dry, spicy profile features sooty malt and vanilla with some apparent sherry influence towards the finish as this gets more dried fruit-like. There's also real staying power with Fisherman's Friend carrying the aftertaste. A sit-back-and-relax island treat at a very reasonable price. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

...A.D. Rattray! Glad to meet one of their recent bottlings, I had thought they were, well, gone. Or busy with the Outer-Mongolian market. We had an early batch of their Cask Islay in 2011, and thought it was pretty good (WF 83). Colour: white wine. Nose: reeks of young Caol Ila, which can’t be bad news. Apples, garden bonfire, seawater, whelks, oysters, fresh almonds, and lemons. There. Mouth: purrfekt, with some impeccable ashy smoke (very CI indeed) and more almonds, lemons, apples, and those tiny green crabs that people would rather throw into wild broths and soups. Oh and apples, naturally. Okay, I had mentioned apples before. Finish: rather long, very ashy, kippery, and with apples and lemons in the aftertaste. Comments: a great batch despite the youth and the (relative) simplicity. Not much depth, but all the rest is perfect. Welcome back, A.D. Rattray! 84 points - whiskyfun.com

This latest Cask Speyside ups the age statement and includes a spell in sherry casks. The rich, spiced berry flavours make an indulgent contrast to the refreshing citrus flavours of the ten. Un-coloured and non-chill-filtered, it's good to see Rattray maintaining the higher abv in this super value series. 46% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Despite the finish, it got a lot of sherry, modern profile, of course. More in the direction of PX, very sweet, toffee, orange peel, apple and almonds. On the palate there is a clear hint of oak, a bit bitter, slightly tingling, very spicy, again orange or orange jam and a hint of red fruit. Quite long finish, spicy, slightly bitter, warming. The 46% drinking strength is just right. Imho did the finish right here for the malt. - whiskybase.com
Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Almond icing, dusted cinnamon, red apple and blackcurrant. Palate: Cherry plum, spiced honey and zesty orange marmalade. Finish: Rolling gently through subtle spice to a lightly tart, bramble conclusion. Spiced berry, citrus and orchard fruit.

"...no arguing with the extreme — and perhaps unmatched — value it offers in single malt Scotch." - drinkhacker.com
While not well-known in Australia, overseas Speyburn has long been considered one of the better values in single malt Scotch. The tenner comes matured in both x-Bourbon and x-Sherry casks and offers a light to medium-bodied dram with a friendly fruity-cereal character. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... A sweet, creamy dram matured mainly in bourbon casks and some sherry casks. The nose has honey, vanilla, flaked coconut, lemon biscuits, and apple Danish pastries. Vanilla fudge, lemon bonbons, white chocolate, toffee, sweet oak, and cracked peppercorns continue the sweet flavor profile as it melts into butterscotch sauce and crème brûlée at the swallow, with vanilla seeds on the finish. It’s impossible not to like it. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com
...Tasting it fresh in 2023, we find a whisky with an outsized nose of fresh granary notes, showing as a bit leathery at times, with the lightest touch of smoke evoking aromas of smoldering underbrush. No fruit, no real sweetness, just the essence of cereal. The palate kicks in with more to offer, though the grain-heavy backbone is never out of focus. Well-roasted cereal, almost overcooked at times, find room for some brighter notes of applesauce, a squeeze of lemon peel, and some sugary shortbread character. Uncomplicated as it develops, the finish melds sweetness with cereal notes, eventually developing into something resembling sweetcorn, served on vanilla wafers. That vaguely smoky quality lingers, however, keeping things in a savory check. All told I am distinctly less enamored with Speyburn 10 today than I was a decade ago, though there is still no arguing with the extreme — and perhaps unmatched — value it offers in single malt Scotch. - drinkhacker.com

A.D. Rattray Bank Note 5 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)SCOTLAND$59. 99Bottle$719.88 DozenABV: 43%Bank Note is the only blend A.D.Rattray bother with. There are two reasons why: Firstly, they believe it’s exceptional, so another would be superfluous. Secondly, it’s part of Scotland’s whisky heritage, stemming from a time when George, Edward then Victoria reigned. Great passenger liners set sail from Glasgow, cargo ships were loaded with whisky barrels on the Clyde where James Sword & Co was one of the largest companies to bottle and blend. Bank Note was in their portfolio of spirits. The company was admired for its dedication to quality – and so Rattray continue the brand with some pride and attention to detail. A mix of 40% malt whiskies from the Speyside and Highland regions is expertly blended with 60% grain whisky from the Lowlands. Maturation for a minimum of five years ensures a mellow taste at 43% ABV, with good mouthfeel and decent depth of flavour.
Other reviews... "Mild honey, delicate tangy citrus, hints of stone fruit, and cereal chewy grains greet you as you bring this blended whisky to your nose. The palate is more of the same; under promise and over deliver. Upon your first sip you will taste creamy vanilla nougat, milk chocolate, more grainy malts and a bitter and slightly astringent lemon zest. The finish is short and sweet of toasted bread, caramel, citrus and the most delicate wisps of peat smoke." - distiller.com
Notes from the bottlers... Colour: Golden with brilliant clarity. Nose: Clean, crisp aroma, hints of vanilla. Palate: Mellow on the taste with sweet richness and depth of flavour. Finish: Clean on the palate with lingering sweetness.

The 2024 Gruaud Larose shows excellent potential, bursting with notes of cassis, pencil shavings, iris and violets. Medium to full-bodied, suave and seamless, it's ample and pure, with a precise, refined pro-life and good persistence on the finish. A blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, it is the fruit of a growing season defined by fully 30 organic phytosanitary treatments and a harvest that concluded on October 8. It checks in at 12.4% alcohol and pH 3.77 (for Gruaud, a rather low number).
92-94 points
William Kelley - Wine AdvocateThe 2024 Gruaud Larose is very fine. Dark and ample, with gorgeous presence, the 2024 has so much to offer. Dark blue/purplish fruit, new leather, gravel, spice, lavender and dried herbs build effortlessly. Readers will find a Saint-Julien endowed with notable textural depth. The finish is perhaps just a touch narrow, but élevage may very well help with that. Drink 2034-2054.

Antonio Galloni - VinousGorgeous dark ruby colour with vivid reflections, slow and steady reveal of grilled earth, savoury rose bud, peony, black tea and floral Cabernet finesse. Harvest 27 September to 8 October, 3.55pH, 31hl/h yield, slap bang on the appellation average, organic certified. 40% of production in this 1st wine. 95% new oak for ageing. Drink 2030-2040.

Profound and very beautiful aromatically. Yet slightly introvert and a little closed at first. Damson, blueberry and black berry, black currant and subtle cassis with gentle aeration. Blanched almonds and a little of their creaminess. In the mouth, there’s some Griotte cherry, a hint of peony and maybe lily of the valley too. Succulent and luxurious in its texture. Suave, quite full and ample in frame, this pushes at the cheeks. I love how the fresh juiciness seems to gather at the top of the palate and, with a sensation of greater viscosity, glide down the cheeks like ‘tears’ descending the sides of a glass. Not, of course the density and concentration of the last couple of vintages, but beautifully managed, very vibrant and fresh and yet with no astringency or dryness. In fact we have a lovely juiciness on the finish and we are left with a very persistent sensation of chewy grape skins.

Smoke and petrol nuances add breadth to the aromas of rosemary oil, pear and soil tones. There is impressive volume to the dense and seductively textured medium weight flavors thanks to the abundant amount of dry extract that imparts a sappy quality to the lingering, powerful and balanced finale. An exuberantly floral nose also displays notes of petrol, rosemary oil and a variety of white orchard fruit scents. The rich, concentrated, powerful and sappy larger-bodied flavors coat the palate with dry extract while delivering excellent length on the muscular and mildly rustic finale. 91-93 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundDerived from Les Fairendes, which tends to produce rather elegant wines, the 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot exhibits aromas of minty pear, green apple, nutmeg and toasted bread, followed by a medium to full-bodied, bright and pure palate that's chalky and suave.
91-93 points
William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeots 1er Cru is composed, almost understated on the nose, with oyster shells and crustacea infusing the yellow fruit. Excellent delineation. The fresh, vibrant palate is more lime-infused than Moreau’s other cuvées and, as such, may not have quite the same level of complexity or terroir expression. Thoroughly enjoyable - perhaps the punters' choice from the Domaine. Drink 2025-2038.
91-93 points
Neal Martin - VinousOnly from old vines in Fairendes. Clear pale lemon. The nose is entirely white fruit and indicates the power to come on the palate. There is a fine backbone to this as well as the habitual flesh of Morgeot, and the oak component is absolutely in harmony. A.D. Rattray Cask Orkney 15 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Orkney Islands, SCOTLAND$119. 99Bottle$1439.88 DozenABV: 46%A mystery Orkney. Could it be Scapa? The notes from the bottlers describe a peppery-smokey character, so it's the other. Not a mainstream Highland Park that most will be accustomed to, which is what you want from an independent. At first, mezcal-like, and subtle smoke indeed, instead, a rather fresh, grassy, crisp expression with trace peat. Fascinating and strangely compelling compared to the official bottlings, once attuned to the right amount of water it makes for a good aperitif. Otherwise, add an ice cube or two, release the oils and richen up the experience. Mimimal water is required. One reviewer sums it up as "...a great summer whisky. Lovely honied malty waxy notes; a good ex-bourbon maturation". It's out of the ordinary for the age statement, but at this price and ABV, grabbing a bottle is't much of a gamble. 46% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.
Other reviews... Nose: A freshness opens the dram, before vanilla, coconut, lemon peel, and some red berries — think raspberries. Palate: That freshness continues alongside cream soda, orange and lemon peel, some apple skin, blossom honey, brioche, and just a hint of sweet spice like ginger powder. Finish: Decent length on the finish here without too much tannin. Comment: Sweet and mellow with lots of sweet bourbon-cask character. - whiskymag.com
Notes from the bottlers... Colour: Butterscotch gold. Nose: Clover honey, Parma violet, ripe peach and wild heather embers. Palate: Grilled plum, old-fashioned barley sugar, noble hop and caraway. Finish: A prolonged peppery smoke lifted by tart citrus and foraged pine.

2011 House of MacDuff The Golden Cask Tamnavulin 12 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$179. 99Bottle$2159.88 DozenABV: 61.5%Barely a brand until the last few years, Tamnavulin has suddenly catapulted to become the fastest growing Single Malt Scotch in the world - partly due to maturing stocks being re-racked into high-quality wood and partly due to the stills being replaced in 2010 to produce a more complex and full-bodied distillate. This bottling represents one of the early runs from the 'new period'. Cough lozenges and Ovaltine, also vaguely cut grass-like on the nose, sweetening after air contact; the first taste feels tense and needing water. Given time we have a well-endowed, medium-bodied malt of some presence: tea biscuits, dark chocolate and warming spice, circling back to the faint citrusy, grassy edge found on the nose. Chewy uncut; broad, soft and feminine with water, the spices moderated. This would make a nice aperitif. 266 bottles from an x-Bourbon barrel. 61.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

2011 House of MacDuff The Golden Cask Strathmill 11 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$159. 99Bottle$1919.88 DozenABV: 58.7%Light in character, Strathmill uses a long fermentation to help create fruitiness. Muted scents of red apple are a keynote here with light vanillas developing definition after air contact. The intensity of orchard fruits is more pronounced in the mouth - poached and sprinkled with sweet spices; acidity and gentle tannins augment the crunchy naturalness of the fruits, transitioning to fine dark chocolate, hints of lemon blossom and pepper warmth. Semi-ripe pear lifts the finish. So well structured for a youngster. With water, simpler, though more of the crisp malt comes through. An immensely appealing bottling from a distillery that's off most people's radar, but worth seeking out. 309 bottles from an x-bourbon cask. 58.7% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

This is one. Uncut, very approachable with broad brush strokes of chimney soot and dry earthy peat reek perfectly matching the low-key sweetness of the malt. Something faintly fruity develops at the finish, like dried pineapple or green apples. Overall pretty standard for Ardmore, though perhaps deeper and more oily than many recent examples. 243 bottles from an x-bourbon barrel. 52% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Nippy and tongue-tingling, you can see why this attracted the attention of the bottlers. Behind all those busy, raucous spices, it is remarkably pure with deliciously defined flavours of vanilla oak and sponge cake, underscored by milk chocolate, light caramels and an oily finish. Precocious, and nothing that a little water won’t temper. In our limited experience, it seems to require a good 15-20 years to unfold. This young, fairly bold example takes some time in the glass to blow off a sharp citric edge and give way to richer notes of powdered beef stock, Ovaltine and dark chocolate. Chewy and full-bodied, packed with bittersweet dark chocolate and hints of roasted nuts, the finish is brisk, vanilla-laced, faintly fruity, medium dry and slightly nutty. 2024 Chateau Lafite Rothschild Pre-Arrival OfferPauillac, Bordeaux, FRANCE$950. 00Bottle$11400.00 DozenClosure: CorkOften seen as the most elegant of the First Growth wines, Chateau Lafite Rothschild has long been considered one of the greatest wines from not only Bordeaux, but from anywhere in the world. Prices too reflect its status as the most collectable wine in Bordeaux, spurred on since 2008 when it ruled the Chinese fine wine market. While the vineyards are planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, each year the proportions vary according to the vintage, normally with Cabernet Sauvignon accounting for 80-90% of the blend.
Other Reviews....
A blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, the 2024 Lafite Rothschild offers up aromas of minty blackcurrants, violets, incense, loamy soil and cigar box, followed by a medium-bodied, pillowy and open-knit palate built around tangy acids and powdery tannins, concluding with a discreetly herbal finish. Harvest began on September 24 and concluded on October 4, delivering a Lafite in something of a throwback style, nodding to the wines made here in the 1970s.

William Kelley - Wine AdvocateThe 2024 Lafite-Rothschild is a sensual, elegant wine very much in the style of the year. Plush and enveloping, with lovely forward fruit, the 2024 is very Lafite, perhaps a bit reticent, but super-expressive just the same. Black cherry, pomegranate, blood orange and a kiss of espresso all build in the glass, framed by quintessentially finessed Lafite tannins. The 2024 is sublime. I expect it will be one of the to be one of the top wines in the Médoc when all is said and done. Drink 2034-2064.
94-96 points
Antonio Galloni - VinousRich texture, this stands head and shoulders above many in the vintage, with graphite, crayon and cassis bud rather than exuberant black fruits. This is precise, savoury, delineated, floral, gunsmoke, juicy, captures the effortless elegance that Lafite does so so well, and it totally delivers. Harvest 23 September to 7 October, 32hl/h yield, above the Pauillac average, 16% press wine included in the blend. Director Eric Kohler's 33rd year in Pauillac. I am giving a slightly earlier begin drinking date than usual, but I am certain this will age exceptionally well as Lafite always does. Drink 2032-2050.

Jane Anson - Inside BordeauxPauillac; 96% Cabernet Sauvignon; 3% Merlot; 1% Petit Verdot; a final yield of 32 hl/ha and representing just a third of the total production; 12.9% alcohol; the first vintage certified organic; tasted at Duhart-Milon with Saskia de Rothschild). Quite plump and plush for the vintage. Like its stablemate Duhart this is very spherical in its shape in the mouth, with gloriously refined cashmere tannins encircling the fresh, bright, crisp and crunchy dark berries and the black cherries – just à point – that form the dense and compact core around which the wine is structured vertically. Horizontally, the wine is again highly structured by a very well-defined central spine around which the graphite seems to gather with the tannins in this dimension stretching out the fruit over the palate. Very classical, very pure and precise, very focussed and always tender, soft and gently seductive. Almost opulent, but never quite, the austerity of the vintage reining it back and rendering this a little more ethereal and also a little more intellectual in the process.

Located in the north-west sector of Chablis in the village of Maligny, Pierrick Laroche runs this family estate which was established by his father in the 1970s. After getting a degree in oenology from Beaune, Patrick travelled the world, doing various internships to gain experience before returning home to start making wine and take over the family vineyards for himself. In 2010 he ceased selling grapes to the local co-operative and produced his first vintage to great acclaim.

Pear, lime and green apple scents drift through the nostrils with good intensity mixing with some oyster shell, subtle dried honey and slate notes along the way. Maintaining the company's traditional styling, the 'handwritten' label and wax sealed stopper reflect Delord's artisanal roots. However, while this variant retains a vintage statement, the label has changed from Bas Armagnac to Vieil Armagnac. The convention is similar to a blend of Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne cognacs being designated as "Fine Champagne Cognac". In Gascony, Vieil Armagnac refers to a blend of two terroirs of the same vintage year, or that the fruit is from Haut Armagnac (often simply stated as "Armagnac". Haut Armagnacs are considered of lesser quality, and less suited to long ageing, which is undeserved, since some can be brilliant). Vieil Armagnacs like this one are typically aged for between 5 to 15 years. Savour it neat or with a splash of water, paired with fresh pastries or semi-soft cheeses. 40% Alc./Vol.

2023 Wittmann Morstein Riesling Grosses GewachsRheinhessen, GERMANY$230. 00Bottle$2760.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkIt's hard to quantify the impact and value of 350+ vintages the Wittmann family have under their belt in their hometown of Westhofen. As part of the 15th generation of ownership, current steward Philipp Wittmann has embraced the organic viticulture ethos started by his father Günter, even taking it one step further by converting their vineyards to biodynamic in 2004. He lays the foundation for wines of exceptional quality through intensive, year-round maintenance, low yields and the uncompromising selection of bunches by hand. These are superb dry Rieslings from this superstar Rheinhessen winery.
Other Reviews....
Compared to the Brunnenhäuschen, Wittmann's 2023 Morstein Riesling GG is light and clear but also still very reduced in the fresh and mineral, even savory and precise nose, which is still restrained in the fruit. Pure and extremely salty on the palate, with a very firm and grippy structure and an almost dry/drying minerality, this Morstein draws saliva. It seems more austere and sinewy here and now than the Brunnenhäuschen, and it's still extremely influenced by limestone. This is a great and promising wine. Tasted at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in Wiesbaden in August 2024.
In another tasting two days earlier at the domaine, the 2023 Morstein showed a wonderfully chalky, elegantly fruity and balanced nose. Pure and with citrusy freshness as well as chalky salinity, this is a ravishingly fine, elegant and clever Morstein that is light-years away from the abundance and power of the 2000s and early 2010s. This is vibrant and stimulating salty and truly reminiscent of Champagnes from the Côte des Blancs. A magnificent Morstein! Drink 2028-2060.

Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2023 Riesling Westhofener Morstein Grosses Gewächs still flickers with the slightest flinty reduction on its cool nose, but with air, lemon moves in and stays center stage. The palate is just as lemony and immediately projects cooling, moist, chalky depth. The palate is slender, delving deep into that chalkiness. Scented with lemon and bedded on soothing, citric yeast, the finish is totally zesty, precise, strait-laced, pristine and very long. (Bone-dry). Drink 2028-2060.

Wittmann's Westhofen 2023 Aulerde Riesling GG continues the top performances of the last five years. Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2023 Riesling Westhofener Aulerde Grosses Gewächs is made from vines planted in the rich marls Aulerde in 1949 and 1951, at a then-unusual density of 8,000 vines per hectare. Wittmann says that this is the earliest ripening site, yielding tiny, ripe grapes year after year. A touch of mellow, ripe, yellow apple appears alongside gentle lemon on the nose. The palate also has that beautiful yellow apple spice and lovely juiciness and texture. The serene and smooth yet hearty palate radiates coolness. (Bone-dry). Drink 2028-2050.

This is a portrait of the vineyard and a picture of juicy, ripe, perfectly formed berries. 11 clones are now producing fruit for this wine, and they are showing in this mid-weight and concentrated wine. Morello cherry, satsuma plum, mulberry skin and black-skinned plum-like dusty spice. There’s a fine dusting of cocoa powder and an ever-changing, savoury undercurrent. Winter leaves, petrichor and black, fertile earth. Wow, just wow. The fruit intensity is eye-bulgingly exciting and makes you sit up straight. This is a fine Pinot, focused on the purity of fruit, great oak, and one that will continue to develop for many years. Velvety tannins, long and nubile acidity, finger-laced spice, and a graphite minerality that goes on and on. It’s just sublime, and the finish wraps and tugs at the heartstrings with its red earthy and ferrous finale.

Cassandra Charlick – WinePilot.comA bolder and immediately more powerful statement of this wine, reflecting a warm vintage. Yet the cooler Pemberton region has reigned it in nicely providing control and precision. A savoury and slightly mushroomy aroma with primary black cherry notes. A racily fresh purple, with a bouquet full of floral energy, as was the village Vougeot. Again, I could imagine whole bunches but there are none. Perhaps what I am tasting is the effect of retaining whole berries from the top-end destemmer which they now use, suggests Sylvie. A saline finish alongside abundant red fruit. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted Nov 2023.

Jasper Morris – Inside BurgundyThe 2022 Vougeot Les Cras 1er Cru has an uncomplicated nose: black plum and briar, missing a bit of presence compared to some of the other cuvées. The palate is more promising, with a corpulent entry counterbalanced by a silver bead of acidity, quite strict, finishing with a touch of sour cherry. Quite peppery on the aftertaste. Worth seeking out. Drink 2026-2038.

What a flavour bomb we have here! It's melt in your mouth kind of stuff. So evocative, so expressive, it's an absolute delight to drink and demands selfishness and large pours at that.
Picked earlier than the 2022, the fruit comes off 90+ year old vines just to the west of Nurioopta. That slight tweak with harvest has paid dividends deluxe.
Pretty and vivid aromas explode from the glass unravelling with incredible ease. So floral and gorgeously perfumed, this is an utterly seductive drink. Think lavender, purple flowers, dried red petals and ripe blueberries smeared all over your face. And if that's not enough to get the juices flowing, well-handled fruit floods the mouth highlighted by an abundance of purple berries and blueberries driving its medium body frame. A fine milk chocolate textural presence slides through late with a lick of spice and a fine rub of brick dust tannin that lingers on a respectable finish. What an absolute winner! Go here.
Drink to five years.

2024 Chateau Pontet-Canet Pre-Arrival OfferPauillac, Bordeaux, FRANCE$199. 00Bottle$2388.00 DozenClosure: CorkToday Chateau Pontet Canet is one of the most popular and collectable wines in all of Bordeaux, and much of this success has come from the extraordinary quality of wines made in the last two decades. While ranked as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification, today the property would easily be regarded as a Second Growth as the wines often rival the best in the region. Much of the emphasis at Pontet Canet is in the vineyard, and the property has converted to 100% biodynamics as of 2005. The vineyard is next to Chateau Mouton-Rothschild, and is planted to 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot.
Other Reviews....
The 2024 Pontet-Canet underlines the fact that daring to harvest late paid dividends in this challenging vintage, wafting from the glass with aromas of cassis, black raspberries and plums mingled with accents of rose petals, licorice and exotic spices. Medium to full-bodied, deep and integrated, with mid-palate density that's all too rare this year, it's layered, suave and seamless, concluding with a long, sapid finish. Picking began on September 26 and concluded on October 11, with the heart of the estate's old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon coming in between the seventh and the ninth, well after many châteaux had finished their harvest. Greater reactivity during the season means that Pontet-Canet's vineyards are gaining in vigor, while in the winery, a lighter touch with extraction, systematic climate control and a wholesale refinement of the estate's cooperage choices have brought new harmony and sensuality to this estate's wines. That has combined with a willingness to take risks with harvest dates to deliver what is clearly one of the wines of the vintage. The blend is roughly half Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with the balance Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.

William Kelley - Wine AdvocateThe 2024 Pontet-Canet is one of the most elegant wines I have tasted here in some time, as in a long time. Brisk acids and beams of tannin shape a mid-weight, classically built Pontet-Canet unlike any I have tasted. The 2024 is not an obvious wine, it does not have the opulence of most recent years, rather it is a wine that impresses with its energy, tension and class. Floral, spice and mineral notes stain the palate in this vibrant, beautifully sculpted Pontet-Canet. The 2024 is seriously impressive, but it is also less immediate than what was once the norm because of a shift towards a style that favors greater energy and vibrancy than in the recent past. The evolution here is going to be fascinating to follow in the coming years. Tasted three times. Drink 2032-2044.

Antonio Galloni - VinousVibrant ruby in colour with violet edging, this is beautifully measured, with a careful release of black fruits. Puts the focus on the floral side of Cabernet Sauvignon, with rose petals, chamomile, fragrant tomato leaf and lilac. There is austerity on the opening, with tight architecture but as it opens juice begins to flow through the pumice and slate-textured tannins, and this delivers a finessed, slim-style of Pauillac, with plenty of ageing potential and quiet confidence. One of the successes of the vintage. Harvest September 26 through to October 11. 3.8ph, 50% new oak, 35% concrete amphoras. Tasted twice. Drink 2032-2046.

A 50/50% mix of upper and lower Yarra estate and grower fruit. 30% whole bunches. A very bright crimson purple. Pretty and complex with aromas of red cherry skins and rhubarb together with some pink peppercorn spice and a light savoury edge. More approachable than the '23. As a young wine, the medium-bodied palate is spicy, silky and long. It'll probably age well but it's so good to drink now that there's no need to bother! Drink by 2030.
