2022 Glaetzer Bishop ShirazBarossa Valley, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$29. 99Bottle$359.88 DozenCellar: 6 - 8 Years (2031-2033)ABV: 14.5%Closure: StelvinThe distinctive labels of the Glaetzer portfolio hold special significance when you view this stunning collection of wines as a family affair. The entry level Bishop Shiraz is named in honour of Ben's mother, Judith (Bishop being her maiden name). The label bears the sign of Venus, which has come to represent women and feminine energy. Glaetzer sources fruit for the Bishop from the Ebenezer district of the Barossa valley from low yielding 35 year old to 120 year-old vines. He finds the fruit from younger vines contributes freshness & vibrancy, while Shiraz from the older blocks provides structure and depth. Maturation took place in 100% French oak for a period of 16 months of which 40% was new oak.
A superb union of richness, power, structure and energy.
Dense inky black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Wafting through the nostrils are blackberry, liquorice and dark plum aromatics followed by some crushed blackpepper, subtle fennel, vanillin cedar and faint graphite like notes. Rich and opulent yet possessing great definition, the full bodied palate is awash with concentrated blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits which are framed by fine grained tannins that have a muscular edge. Superb depth & length with spicy vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered earth elements also chiming in. Showing an abundance of power and an energetic vibrancy, it has a long, structured yet slightly tense finish. Give this a few more years to settle in and it should turn into something special.
Cellar 6-8 years.

2016 Gravner Ribolla Gialla Anfora BiancaFriuli-Venezia, ITALY$280. 00Bottle$3360.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: CorkJosko Gravner’s 18 hectares of vineyards in Oslavje, on the Italy-Slovenia border, have been the foundation of his ever-evolving pursuit of winemaking perfection. In the 1980s, he helped propel Friuli to international acclaim with his clear, aromatic whites, later championing Collio’s potential through careful aging in Slavonian oak. However, disillusioned by increasing chemical intervention, a 1987 epiphany led him to explore ancient Caucasian methods, culminating in his pioneering adoption of Georgian amphorae in the late 1990s—a shift that influenced winemaking well beyond Italy. Since 2001, he has exclusively fermented his wines in beeswax-lined amphorae buried beneath the soil, followed by six years in oak, mirroring the seven-year cellular regeneration cycle. Though not strictly biodynamic, he follows Rudolf Steiner’s principles, working without fertilizers or chemicals, harvesting by the lunar cycle, and adding only minimal sulphur. His unfiltered wines are released only when he deems them ready to drink.
Gravner's signature wine is his Ribolla Gialla which is fermented in Georgian amphorae buried underground with a long maceration on skins. After the drawing off and pressing phases, the wine is poured back into amphorae for at least five more months before it starts ageing in large oak barrels, where it's left for six years. Bottling is done without fining or filtration.

2023 Foradori Fontanasanta Manzoni BiancoFriuli-Venezia, ITALY$59. 99Bottle$719.88 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkBased in the northern Italian region of Trentino, Foradori focus on the traditional varieties Teroldego, Nosiola, and Manzoni. Much of the production is the often-forgotten Teroldego grape, and Elisabetta Foradori is largely responsible for resurrecting it from the brink of extinction, and producing some of Italy’s finest, most age-worthy wines. Their plantings of Teroldego are situated in the Campo Rotaliano region where the former flood plain has deposited huge quantities of limestone, granite, porphyry and fine sand, perfect for growing Teroldego. Nearby in the hills is their Fontanasanta (holy water) estate which is planted to Nosiola and Incrocio Manzoni on the rich red clay and white limestone soils. While Elisabetta is still very much a strong presence, much of the winemaking duties are now handled by her children, Emilio, Theo and Myrtha.
Manzoni is a genetic cross between Riesling and Pinot Blanc, and in the hands of Foradori is an alluring and aromatic white of huge complexity. Verging towards an amber wine due to a period of fermentation on skins, Fontanasanta Manzoni Bianco is a salty, vibrant and lip smacking example that you'll want to spend time exploring.

2022 Occhipinti SP68 Rosso Frappato Nero d'AvolaSicily, ITALY$49. 99Bottle$599.88 DozenABV: 11%Closure: CorkOcchipinti is one of the hottest names in Italian wines, and their tiny production is highly sought after. Situated a mere 15km from the Mediterranean, the vineyards are 250m above sea level planted to Frappato and Nero d’Avola. Winemaking is natural and hands off, with fermentation occurring spontaneously, no temperature control, no fining, no filtration and only minimal sulphur additions at bottling.
SP68 is named after the road that borders the estate and is a blend of Frappato and Nero d’Avola.
Other Reviews....
The remarkably pretty 2022 Rosso SP68 is perfumed with a blend of violets, roses, white pepper and dried strawberries. This is built on purity, with sweet herbal tones accentuating citrus-tinged wild berry fruits, all energized by brisk acidity. The SP68 finishes with a gentle, cheek-puckering tension, leaving a lovely lavender hint to fade slowly. Drink 2023-2026.

Eric Guido - VinousNamed after the road that flanks the estate, Sp68 is an entry-level blend of Nero d’Avola and Frappato. It offers a taste of the estate’s signature style at an affordable price, displaying inviting aromas of ripe strawberries and raspberries, with some floral and herbal elements in the background. Ripe acidity underpins the mid-weight core of sweet red fruits, making for a deliciously easy-going mouthfeel with a briny and peppery finish. Aged for approximately six months in concrete vats. Brokenwood has long sourced quality grapes from all around Australia, which is very wise when you hail from a region that, while it offers world class Semillon and Shiraz, can have limitations with other varieties. Here, they have blended fruit from Beechworth and the Alpine Valley in Victoria. Fermentation is in stainless steel, except for the pressings, which is by way of old French oak barrels, to add to the texture and complexity. This is a really impressive Pinot Gris. The colour is a slightly deeper gold than most. The wine is immaculately constructed and varietally all present and correct, with lifted notes of pears, crisp green apples, and a hint of figs and spices. It also gives the impression of the merest note of oak, but all is well integrated and well balanced. There is depth and energy here, and the wine is richly flavoured on the palate, and is well supported by bright acidity. It exhibits impressive length and should drink impressively for at least the next five years. Drink 2024-2029.

Ken Gargett – WinePilot.comIf Pinot Gris is not normally your bag, you might want to check out this really interesting take on it. It comes from Beechworth and the Alpine Valleys in Victoria – so it’s cool climate stuff. The juice was fermented before the pressings were fermented separately in old oak, then coming together in the final blend. So, it has texture and fruit but at the same time, there is a fine minerally linear thread that keeps the energy level up. Attractive and very pleasing take on this variety. Drink 2024-2028.

Stylistically, the wines lean toward the racy, tensile end of the Meursault spectrum, in the vein of Roulot or Carillon. They’re built to age, but always with a drink-now brightness that keeps you coming back for another glass.

Much like the Limozin, the expressive nose is perfumed and elegant with its cool array of just sliced citrus, smoked apple and subtle floral and spice wisps. 2018 Royal Tokaji Blue Label 5 Puttonyos Aszu (500ml)Tokaji, HUNGARY$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 11.5%Closure: CorkTokaji Aszú is a noble sweet wine made by blending dried and noble rotten berries to a dry base wine. Taste and quality of the Aszú mainly depend on the number of hods (puttonyos) filled with dry berries (25 kilograms each), which are added to a cask (Gönc type, 136 liters) of dry base wine. Consequently, the proportion between aszú berries and dry base wine is about 1:1 for a 6 puttonyos Aszú. Aszú Eszencia is made with the same process, and is a classification above 6 puttonyos where the ratio of noble dry berries to wine is more akin to 7-10 puttonyos. This is not to be confused with Tokaji Essencia which is a fermentation of just the free run juice of the dried noble berries as they rest in the vat.

James Suckling - 1990 Marc Bredif Grande Annee VouvrayVouvray, Loire Valley, FRANCE$185. 00Bottle$2220.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: Cork
The domaine of Marc Bredif is one of the most famous names in the Loire, renowned for the longevity and quality of their Vouvray. Established in 1893 under the name of Chateau les Roches it wasn't until 1919 when Marc Bredif took over from his uncle, that the name was changed to reflect the change in ownership.
Marc Bredif produces three levels of Vouvray, each with a greater degree of concentration and sweetness. Their Classic range is crisp and fresh in style, dry and refreshing. Occasionally they will also release this wine after 10 years in the cellar as a museum release. Grande Annee is their off-dry style released only once ready to drink, often 10+ years from harvest. Finally their Collection releases come from only the finest vintages, are medium-sweet, with a huge amount of intensity and concentration, and an enviable ability to develop further in the cellar.
The 1990 vintage in Vouvray is considered one of the greats, producing wines of exceptional richness, balance, and longevity. A warm, dry growing season with ideal harvest conditions led to perfectly ripened Chenin Blanc, resulting in wines with both concentration and vibrant acidity. Dry and off-dry Vouvrays from this year are powerful yet refined, with deep fruit expression, floral and honeyed nuances, and a strong mineral backbone. Even decades later, 1990 Vouvrays continue to age gracefully, cementing their place among the finest of the region.
- 2005 Marc Bredif Collection VouvrayVouvray, Loire Valley, FRANCE$235. 00Bottle$2820.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: Cork
The 2005 vintage in Vouvray was excellent, producing wines with balance, depth, and great aging potential. A warm, dry growing season with little disease pressure allowed for slow, even ripening, resulting in Chenin Blanc with both richness and vibrant acidity. Dry and off-dry wines from this year are particularly well-structured, showcasing ripe orchard fruits, floral notes, and a firm mineral core. Conditions were also favorable for sweeter wines, with some botrytis-affected moelleux displaying impressive concentration and complexity. Overall, 2005 was a benchmark vintage, yielding Vouvrays that combine generosity of fruit with the precision and longevity the appellation is known for.

Planted in '99, the Indigo Vineyard, in the foothills of the Victorian Alps, has a reputation for fine chardonnay. This is a lovely example, lemon-scented and intense with refined pomelo and white peach flavours. The wine is defined by an acid line, which gives focus, freshness and length. Winemaking artefact has been seamlessly integrated to give the wine an extra dimension rather than a counter melody. Whole-bunch-pressed grapes with natural fermentation in French oak (100% new). My advice: drink the Mayer Pinot now and over the next five years and then get stuck into this Dr Mayer Pinot. Drink 2025-2035.

It’s ‘whoa!’ in the green herb, white pepper and mezcal characters! Strap in. Lighter weight, a sluice of red cherry, rose hip cherry, all of this tightly wound with those green herb and peppery notes, skinny in its jive and cinched with ultra fine, silty tannin lending a long, drying pucker post sips. Fragrant, frisky, needs some time to see it elevate, but even now has a slinky swagger that should drag pinotphiles in. Sleek, elegant, personality plus. Drink 2026 - 2036.

When Timo cheered "bring back the funk!", it was this wine that originally delivered on the promise. He's since released the Dr expression which dials up this ethos even further, but his Close Planted Pinot still holds a special place in many Pinot lover's hearts. 2022 Yeringberg Marsanne RoussanneYarra Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$74. 99Bottle$899.88 DozenABV: 13%Closure: StelvinSavoury and floral, with quince and sandalwood, this Rhône-style blend is lively and textured.
Yeringberg is a historic Yarra Valley estate, first established in 1863 and now under the stewardship of the fifth generation of the de Pury family. Once one of the region’s most celebrated vineyards, production ceased in 1921 before being revived by Guill and Katherine de Pury in 1969. Today, winemaker Sandra de Pury leads the winery, working alongside her brother David who manages the vineyard. With some of the oldest vines in the Yarra Valley, Yeringberg continues to produce elegant, age-worthy wines that reflect both heritage and thoughtful custodianship.
Yeringberg’s 2022 Marsanne Roussanne is a beautifully composed white blend of 61% Marsanne and 39% Roussanne, sourced from old vines planted in 1973 and 1983 respectively. A low-yielding vintage yielded small volumes of intensely flavoured fruit, handpicked and co-fermented before ageing in old oak to preserve purity and freshness. The result is a wine of quiet complexity and savoury elegance, with lifted aromas of honeysuckle, jasmine and orange blossom layered over quince, pear skin and sandalwood. The palate is finely textured, lively and food-friendly, with the hallmark breadth and power of this classic Rhône-inspired blend.

It's a compelling mix that flows through onto the palate, which is gently textured, saline, and very well structured. A complex golden wine that’s nutty and saline, and often puts me in mind of Cornflakes, though maybe that’s just me. I’m quite fond of them too, especially with some good honey on top. Philip Rich - Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionWell, I probably should have tasted this alongside the Yeringberg Yeringberg from the same vintage, though timing/chaos prevented that. I reckon this is the better wine for me, because it has a bit less oak, and more perfume and finesse. I could be wrong. It’s from 1999 plantings.
Intense small berried black and red fruits, quite some violet perfume, pencils and tobacco, perhaps a little aniseed. It’s medium-bodied, quite ferrous and pencilly, the old liquid ‘mineral’ feel that great Cabernet often sports, compact and fine-grained tannin grip, freshness and excellent length, some redcurrant peeking through in the aftertaste along with some more savoury/earthy character. Beautiful wine. So good. Drink 2025 - 2038+.

2023 Yeringberg Babyberg White BlendYarra Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$39. 99Bottle$479.88 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: StelvinGolden and expressive, with floral aromatics and a textured, tea-like palate driven by extended skin contact.
To secure the future of Yeringberg, the team has spent the past three years planting new vines on phylloxera-resistant rootstock and reorienting vineyard blocks to better adapt to a changing climate. The Babyberg range will showcase wines from these young plantings (2020–2025), offering an experimental and diverse take on Yeringberg’s evolving story.
The first Babyberg release is a fresh and playful take on Yeringberg’s classic Marsanne Roussanne blend. Comprising around 80% Marsanne fermented on skins for up to 21 days and 20% whole-bunch pressed Roussanne, the wine was matured in old oak for 10 months before bottling in February 2024. Golden in hue, it opens with aromas of honeysuckle, orange blossom and apricot. The palate is lively and textured, with a spicy, nutty richness and distinctive phenolics—thanks to the extended skin contact—that recall fine black tea. A vibrant and expressive new chapter for Yeringberg.

80/20% marsanne/roussanne and a new wine made from young vines. Bright gold with green tinges. An opulent and attractive melange of apricot, peach and orange blossom. The medium-bodied palate is fleshy and flavoursome, balanced by soft acidity and a refreshing touch of grip on the finish. Drink 2025 - 2027.

Philip Rich - Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionWonderfully aromatic and floral, giving notes of apricots, lavender, peaches and chamomile tea. The palate is full-bodied with a really phenolic and textural mouthfeel from 10 days of skin contact, showing notes of nectarines and honeysuckle. Unique and very interesting wine made from a young-vine blend of 80% marsanne and 20% roussanne. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
