Penelope is relatively new on the Bourbon landscape, having been created in 2018 by lifelong friends, Mike Paladini and Danny Polise. The name is a nod to Mike’s daughter. MGP has recently bought the brand out. The entry-level bourbon is a blend of wheat and rye mashbills, aged separately before blending and bottling. Maturation takes place in barrels charred with #4 staves and #2 heads. Current batches are aged longer than the original product - a minimum four years as opposed to two, and despite the base-level ABV, the whiskey comes bottled non-chill-filtered - unusual for Bourbon. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... The aroma presents as spiced and sweet, reminiscent of a liqueur. The palate is light, showing allspice, chamomile and ginger, with a fleeting white floral note and hint of cedar. What's in the bottle is a four-grain Bourbon (corn, rye, wheat, malted barley) distilled in Indiana, aged about two years, bottled in Kentucky, and named for the founder's daughter. 89 points - wineenthusiast.com
[Batch #2 tasted 2020] The nose offers cherry, raspberry tart, dried orange slices, butterscotch, black pepper, and antique closet. The palate is powerful, with sweet syrup up front, bold flavors of herbs and spice, grain, dusty oak, and an earthy note of warehouse floor. More spice emerges with water, bringing semi-sweet chocolate, cooked raspberries, and leather. ...There’s no denying that this is a young bourbon as its youth is present throughout. With little distinguishing traits, long time bourbon drinkers will most likely walk away indifferent to Penelope Bourbon. That said, this bourbon seems to be aimed squarely at those new to the world of whiskey, specifically from their choice of marketing as an under 100 calorie pour, to using a wheated bourbon to soften its flavor profile. The end result though is exactly the type of whiskey I’d pour for someone looking to try bourbon for the first time. A fairly quiet Scotch brand, in the last few decades there's been renewed interest as French owners, Picard have been experimenting with new age statements and maturations. Most of those weren't high strength, like this. Drawn from 1st & 2nd Fill Oloroso Sherry butts, some claim this to be more characterful than the distillery's official bottlings, and the mouthfeel is surprisingly smooth despite the high ABV. Sherry on top, and you're good to go! 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.
Other reviews... Truly, what a marvellous ‘budget’ series from Signatory… Colour: deep gold. Nose: cedarwood and candied oranges, plus bergamots and nougat—what more could one want? Nothing, absolutely nothing. With water: straw, hay, cigars, bread dough. And bread dough is always something to cherish under such circumstances. Mouth (neat): magnificently peppery, then bursting with turmeric, liquorice and coffee bean. It’s utterly full-on in the spice department, to say the least, but it’s great fun. Perhaps just a touch too much, on second thought? With water: we return to pure malt, herbs, earth, yeast… And the sherry’s walnuts! Finish: fairly long, a tad austere, bitter, herbal and, above all, honest. A trace of oregano on the aftertaste, which is rather amusing. From the Watervale sub region, Skilly Valley, which runs north to south on the valley floor, vines grow in sandy loam soils over broken quartz. Protected from the extremes of the summer sun by the valley sides, the grapes from these vines produce Riesling with a natural crisp acid backbone.
Lean and tense yet intensely flavoured with an electric feel and long piercing finish.
Brilliant water like core with a faint greenish tinge around the edges. Lime and lemon scents leap from the glass trailed by some orange rind, talc and chalky mineral notes. Orange rind, chalky talc and steely mineral elements thread their way through the zingy back half. Super crisp acidity with a long piercing, steely mineral laced finish.

The Skilly Valley is a sub-region of Watervale. And the minerally character in the wine comes from the sandy loam soils over broken quartz. It’s quite a delicate wine, heavily scented with light florals and appley citrus notes with just a hint of musk stick. The palate is fine, and although delicate, has a tremendous driving intensity with that typical Riesling tension. It finishes long and picks up very subtle stone fruit nuances as it flows through. A sub-region of Watervale. You’d not expect 2025 to be a good vintage, given it was so dry, yet here we are. The proof is in the pudding (or glass as it may be).
My word this is a juicy wine. Green mango, lime and lemongrass, a spicy almost peppery top note. It has crunch and grip, lime and sherbet, definitely a sort of Thai salad sort of thing happening, and quite stony texture on a gently grippy finish of very good length. It’s maybe a little bit rugged, though I kind of like that. Flavour is not a problem for this wine, despite its very modest alcohol. Very nice. Drink 2025-2034.

Exquisitely dry, gently textural, whispered with slate and full of class. This is Clare Valley riesling at its dry, persistent, mouthwatwering best. Lime, floral notes, slate and a whisper of strawberry and/or blackcurrant bud. It’s a beautiful, dry, crisp riesling, light, lingering and ultimately satisfying.

The 2025 Skilly Valley Riesling is perhaps more of a predictable Clare Valley Riesling than the 2024 was, and by that I mean that this is classic lime, green apple, white pepper, fennel and green almonds. In the mouth, the wine is talcy and fine, chalky and fresh‚—it is possessed of that great succulence that is specific to Clare Valley Riesling. This is really impressive. By all accounts, 2025 was a challenging season for the lack of water and sustained heat, coupled with some damaging frosts leading in to the spring in 2024, however, none of the struggle is evident in this glass. This is excellent. 10.3% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2035.

Much of this quality stems from remarkable raw material. The estate farms some of the Rheinhessen's greatest sites: Morstein, Abtserde, Kirchspiel and Hubacker, with most vines now well over 30 years old, and many far older. Yields rarely exceed 35 hl/ha, harvest is deliberately late, and meticulous hand selection allows for long skin contact before gentle pressing. Fermentation takes place in a mix of old oak and stainless steel, always with an eye toward transparency and finesse rather than weight.
While more than 85 percent of Keller's holdings lie within Grosse Lage (Grand Cru) vineyards, only a small proportion is bottled under those designations. The estate's calling card, Riesling von der Fels, has taken on a greater role in recent years, both in scale and in significance. Initially conceived as a cuvée of young-vine fruit from top sites, it now incorporates a growing proportion of mature vines producing fruit of genuine GG quality. The result is a dry Riesling that captures the essence of the Keller style with remarkable clarity and precision.

The 2024 Riesling von der Fels, made with 50% grapes from Kirchspiel and the other 50% from Frauenberg, Hubacker, Abtserde and Morstein, was vinified in stainless steel and 600- to 2,400-liter oak vats. The wine displays bright, elegant, fresh and delicately spicy fruit with citrus and salty notes. Lean, elegant and juicy on the palate, with plenty of salt, a firm structure and lively citrus notes, this is an almost light, aromatic and very drinkable dry Riesling from shell limestone and limestone soils. It has a savory finish. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2025. Drink 2028-2045.

The winery’s calling card, says Keller. Includes a higher percentage of Kirchspiel (45%) than normal, with one barrel from vines planted 1964, two barrels of Morstein and AbtsE and a bit of Hubacker. Lightly flinty aroma, pure salty-sour citrus. More mineral and less Riesling-defined than usual. High acid, great tension. Minerality of the vintage and Kirchspiel. A serious Von der Fels. Tight, bone dry, sinewy but with a mouth-watering grapefruit-like fruit foundation. Texture, too, with high dry extract in 2024 giving body to balance the freshness. Acidity is high but integrated. RR stands for Riesling from red-soiled parcels within Kirchspiel, where the iron-rich earth gives a spicier, more textural profile than the limestone sites used for Von der Fels. The 2024 vintage offers bright fruit, fine grip and an energetic, savoury edge that highlights the distinct personality of these red soils.

The Abtserde vineyard sits immediately above the old monastery site in Westhofen, on pure limestone soils with light marl. It is regarded as one of the estate's most finely detailed sites, producing wines defined by precision and minerality, and is among Keller's most limited bottlings.

Full-bodied, pure, fresh and saline on the palate, this is a highly complex and tight Riesling with a very intense, aromatic and structured finish. A great Riesling! The 2023 Riesling Westhofener Brunnenhäuschen Abtserde Grosses Gewächs is from a site between Kirchspiel and Morstein with the high active limestone. The shy nose teases with immensely pure but tender lemon peel notes, still interspersed with reduction. More air adds lemon balm. The palate is a picture of slenderness, brightness, freshness and limestone coolness. Underneath that is salt, stone and immense juiciness. Zestiness reigns, bringing length, depth and extra dimensions of citrus radiance. This is luminous and pure. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2060.

The tonal scale starts to rise here to a higher note than in Morstein but also showing more obvious smoky/mineral reduction. Ripe, pure and lightly spicy citrus, becoming ever more fragrant with air. A perfect contrast between crisp acidity and a rounded, deep fullness in the mouth, very different from the Rieslings grown on slate-dominated sites. Immense power, depth and length and an icy-cool finish cutting through all that depth. Drink 2027-2040.

The 2023 Riesling Westhofener Morstein Grosses Gewächs is made from 75-year-old vines higher up in the Morstein. Just a touch of reduction still swings on the nose, but underneath, white peach, lemon balm and chervil flirt enticingly. Later on, creamy lemon joins in. Smooth serenity, absolutely cooling depth and an almost zen-like calm define the palate. Lemon at the core is almost incidental to this luminous, cool, profound wine with impeccable purity, poise and freshness. The longer you consider this, the deeper it sinks into that limestone. Someone once described Keller's wines as the Puligny-Montrachet of Germany, and this one exemplifies that association. It’s not the grape variety that takes centre stage here, but the terroir – clay marl with limestone on a rocky subsoil. An even deeper note than in the Oberer Hubacker. Spicy, rich, open in citrus and smoky/herbal complexity. A little more obvious reduction here. Altogether a darker, deeper wine that the previous wines from limestone soils. Immense concentration and power, essence of Riesling from this site, which give a more savoury complexity and seems incapable of flirting with the taster. But the taste stays with you for ever. Something here reminds me of Schubertslay even though the soils and the topography are so different. A smoky/herbal aftertaste. Drink 2027-2040.

In June 2022, Elixir Distillers (the company behind a slew of UK brands such as Port Askaig and Elements of Islay) took over Tormore distillery from corporate giant, Pernod Ricard. Since then, they've presented the 'Blueprint Cask Program', an official pre-release series of three 10 year old expressions. Each focuses on a style of maturation that may form the basis of upcoming bottlings: One from bourbon barrels, another from toasted barrels and a third matured in Cream sherry casks. A core range is expected to follow in 2026. Meanwhile, malt lovers can get a heads up on these. Each Blueprint is a run of 1500 bottles at 48% ABV and are non-chill filtered. Given Tormore has mostly been a workhorse for blends, official bottlings didn't exist until 2004. Subsequent releases under Pernod Ricard never gained wide recognition, and the void has only been filled by independent offerings from Signatory, Cadenhead’s and Gordon & MacPhail. Hence, this much-overlooked distillery will be a novelty for most. The Bourbon Barrel expression has been summed up as "A great Summer whisky."

The Quintet is Mount Mary's signature red and, for many, the heart of the estate. Blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec, it reflects both the site and the season with quiet precision. The 2023 vintage brings together 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot and 4% Malbec. Each component is fermented on skins for around two weeks before spending close to two years in oak: a thoughtful mix of large-format, new and seasoned barrels. The 2023 Quintet is, like every other Quintet I've tasted in my life, pure joy. The wine is famous for its fine frame and floral aromatics, its ability to age what feels interminably and its unfettered expression of this corner of the Yarra Valley—Coldstream. While the cooler season of 2023 has shaped some of the elements of the wine, it remains true to its site and leaves a gentle cedar note trail through the memory. It has more pomegranate and cherry than cassis or blackberry, along with notes of violets, bay leaf and star anise even. It is a beautiful wine, one of my favorite Cabernets in this country. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam cork. Drink 2025-2043.

Brightly coloured, the result is a gorgeous wine; perfumed and beguiling with pure, blackcurrant fruit aromas, graphite, violets and subtle, oak-derived cedar and pencil shavings. The palate is classically medium bodied with lovely persistence, the fruit supported by balanced, fine-grained tannins and equally fine acidity. Like all great Mount Mary Quintets this will age gracefully over the next two decades but, given a good decant, is also balanced an approachable enough to enjoy in its youth. Drink 2027-2040.

This is a crisper, more acid than tannin based vintage, or at least that’s my reading. Blueberry, blackcurrant, nutmeg, peanuts and tilled earth, pencil and violet perfume, with a smoky pipe tobacco and a dried herb top note, some liquorice richness is there too, which is kind of surprising! There’s a coolness to this wine, though it’s still all blackcurrant and black olive, very finely etched with a bright cranberry and raspberry finish of excellent length. Tight and slightly tangy, and I reckon it will do so well with bottle age. I like the graphite/pencil thing on the finish very much, and the dried violet that carries a lingering fragrance as it closes. Gee, I love the perfume that this wine has, though tannin has a little more scratchiness to it than is typical. I’m thinking about this wine more than is usual, which is a good sign. In short, one of the more aromatic releases, though lesser in tannin quality. Still, it’s a beautiful thing. Drink 2029 - 2044+.

The 2025 Tupelo wine is crafted from a harmonious blend comprising 39% Pinot Gris, 30% Pinot Blanc, and 24% Gewürztraminer, 7% Riesling. This unique composition pays homage to the renowned Alsatian 'Gentil' style by combining the full-bodied and textured characteristics of Pinot Gris, the lively vibrancy of Pinot Blanc, the aromatic spiciness of Gewürztraminer, and culminating in the finesse and acidic structure of Riesling. The grapes are all meticulously handpicked and destemmed and undergo approximately eight hours of skin contact before being gently pressed and then aged in seasoned oak barrels for a wild fermentation process. Gewurztraminer, on the other hand, lingers on the skins for a slightly longer period of two days before fermentation. Each varietal is then left to rest on lees for two months, without any sulphur before being blended and bottled.

The 2025 Tupelo is composed of Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Gewürztraminer and Riesling, a blend that typifies Tasmania's capacity to combine complexity with eminent drinkability. After tasting hundreds of wines in Tasmania in January, it became clear to me that Pinot Gris grows very well here, and it lends itself to a variety of blends and styles, offering us, the drinkers, a bright and easy-drinking option. To me, it is the commercial proposition of Tasmania, and never has Pinot Gris in Australia looked so good as it does down here, off the mainland. Here, the wine leads with rose petals, white peach, green apple, layers of brine and pith, nashi pear and white flowers. It's balanced, it's fresh, it's textural and it's classy. Sam Connew's 'Tupelo' is consistently one of my favourite wines in her vinous quiver. You see, it's a blend of pinot gris, riesling, gewürztraminer and pinot blanc and it's a case of the whole being more that the sum of its parts. It's slinky and textural, with characters of poached pear, wildflowers, honeysuckle, crushed stone, clover, iced peach tea, ozone and almond paste. It is complex and wildly easy to drink at the same time ... no mean feat and of course, being Taswegian, there is minerally energy to burn. It's a ripper. Drink 2025-2030.

The 2025 Single Vineyard Riesling delicately balances between being 'dry' and 'off-dry' (6.7g/L residual sugar), and achieves a remarkable equilibrium between acidity and fruitiness. The Riesling comes from all three blocks of the Stargazer vineyard located in the Tea Tree sub-region of Coal River, planted in 2004, 2017, and 2021, supplemented with grapes from another grower in Campania sub region, planted in 2001. The grapes are carefully hand-picked, destemmed, and then undergo eight hours of skin contact maceration before being pressed and transferred to tanks for fermentation. Fermentation is halted when the ideal sugar-to-acid balance is achieved, and the wine is left on lees for several months, with gentle stirring every two weeks.

The 2025 Riesling is tightly coiled and composed, fresh and floral. Where the Palisander is texturally complex and weighty in its delivery of powerful fruit and focused acidity, this presents an altogether more feathery experience, one that tends to dance across the palate, rather than march. Here, we have lime flesh, lemon curd, white flowers and crushed rocks. It may not be as complex as the Palisander nor as layered, but I find it to be irresistibly detailed, fresh and pleasurable. This wine comes exclusively from Stargazer's own vineyards in the Tea Tree sub-region of the Coal River Valley, where the vines were planted in 2002. The soil here is clay loam with a high calcium content, which results in thicker grape skins and more flavor. The fruit is handpicked, destemmed, and left on the skins for 12 hours before gentle pressing. The juice is wild fermented in ceramic and concrete egg-shaped containers where it is left to age on lees for a further 10 months.

The 2024 Palisander Riesling hails from the Palisander vineyard in the Coal River Valley. The fruit was left on its skins for 12 hours prior to a wild ferment over six weeks in ceramic (60% of the blend) and concrete eggs (the balance) and then left on the lees for 10 months. Aromatically, it leads with candle wax and brine, hessian and straw. In the mouth, the wine is textural and wide, with the impact of the time on its lees wholly evident. This is chewy and full of flavor, with bright acidity (a pH of 3.19 and six grams per liter of acidity) that is mitigated by 0.5 grams per liter of acidity of residual sugar left in the wine. This is sophisticated and sleek, with eminent polish and drive. It's very good. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2026-2036.

A new tequila venture founded by former Test Cricket Captain, Adam Gilchrist. The brand’s name, El Arquero, is Spanish for “The Archer” and “The Keeper”. “That’s where the cricket reference ends,” Gilchrist says. “I wanted something that could stand on its own two feet... I’m not a brand ambassador, I’m a founder. I wanted to do it properly.” Adamant that the brand isn't about celebrity or fanciful stories, Gilchrist is genuinely interested in quality. “We didn’t want to just slap a label on someone else’s juice,” he says. “We wanted something authentically made, traditionally distilled, and clean as it gets. No additives, no shortcuts.” So he and his team partnered with the Báñuelos family, third-generation masters and original founders of Cazadores. Their Destiladora de Los Altos distillery has been quietly perfecting the art for over half a century.
The Blanco is aimed at being accessible without compromising proper tequila character. Seven year old agaves are harvested to create a bright, herbaceous aroma leading to a refreshingly crisp palate. According to Esquire Magazine, "...clarity shows in the liquid. The Blanco leads with roasted pineapple, citrus and white pepper before sliding into notes of vanilla and lemon. Following the series’ inaugural release in 2024 (La Bonne Intention / DHE) comes this single barrel blend of two pot still rums, PM (Port Mourant double wooden pot still ) & DHE (Diamond High Ester from a small John Dore double retort pot still), both aged for 10 years in second-fill Bourbon barrels. According to the company, their high ester rums are marked by intense fruity and floral notes, driven by the concentration of the aromatic compounds that define their signature character. The distillation process involves slow boiling and high reflux in the DHE still, which is said to help retain and extract the high concentration of ethyl acetate produced during the “funky fermentation” process. As a result, the rum achieves ester levels exceeding 1,500 grams per hectolitre.
Beyond the deep mahogany colour, the first thing you notice is the volatility of alcohol. Once the fumes recede the nose gives way to papaya, mango yogurt, ginger warmth and latent vanillas. If you like your rums intense, this comes with a potent, almost incendiary attack of succulent tropical fruits and bracing spices. As your mouth adjusts to the ABV it feels less aggressive.; flavours of ginger biscuits and dry molasses are evident, as is the Bourbon oak input, but overall it's true to the label, capturing a bittersweet fruit-bomb profile that repeatedly brings you back to those funky esters, reminiscent of banana bread and ripe papaya, especially as the finish gains definition after air contact. Not everyone can handle these very natural and exotic styles, but most would agree, they're rare to find, and deliver at least twice as much character than 99% of mainstream market rums. 51.7% Alc./Vol.

There used to be the modest but likeable 10 year old ‘The Original’, which we last tried in 2023 (WF 81) but it’s since been replaced by this 12 year old, the house having added two extra years of maturation. A refreshing change from the recent global trend of reducing ages by heading toward NAS territory, you know whisky's way of doing shrinkflation. Colour: gold. Nose: the 40% do make themselves felt, or rather not felt, if you see what I mean, but the American oak casks do lend their usual creamy and vanilla-forward touch, alongside ripe apples, banana, soft oak (with a whisper of fresh sawdust), and a fairly prominent note of Earl Grey tea. Also some fresh barley, which makes the whole thing rather pleasant. Mouth: we find the nose again on the palate, though it leans a little more towards oranges this time, and thus a little less towards the rest. A hint of bitterness follows, then green tea, a touch of ginseng and a suggestion of peach skin. It’s light but not weak. Finish: a little short, yet once again, fair enough. Other reviews... The ‘replica’ wave shows no sign of retreating, and this design strongly evokes the old official Tormores from the 1970s. You’ll say those were excellent!... Toasted casks are a different breed from the usual charred ones typically used for whisky, but a strong toast will also leave its mark on the contents, leaning towards coffee yet with fewer tannins. Colour: straw. Nose: for the moment we’re on mineral and citrusy tension, which brings to mind some young Pulteneys we’ve just sampled. It’s fresh, with a fatty side on the nose (sunflower oil, green banana, peanut butter) but, thank goodness, there’s no avalanche of coconut and vanilla in sight. A few dandelion petals fluttering in the background. Mouth: there’s a distinctly spicy and resinous edge here, one wonders whether it’s European oak—or even Mizunara? Also heaps of maquis honey with a punchy character, and a definite juniper note that’ll have you sailing straight across the North Sea to Holland. Let’s not forget the speculoos, which are also quite dominant. All in all, it comes across as more of a blend component, and in fact that’s exactly what it is, the future ‘new’ Tormores won’t be flying solo in this particular style. Finish: hints of mint liqueur and turmeric. Comments: very unusual and leaning more towards the spirit of some young Germanic distilleries, I’d say. Eligo is made from the most exceptional parcels of fruit available to John and Tim Duval. Comprising 62% Barossa Valley and 38% Eden Valley Shiraz, the exceptional 2021 vintage was sourced from old vineyards in the Ebenezer (Hoffmann), Krondorf (Stoll) and Moppa (Chapman) sub regions of the Barossa Valley and the Moculta (Fechner) and Mt McKenzie (Knight/Severin) sub regions of the Eden Valley. Maturation took place in French oak (42% new) for a period of 18 months.
Impenetrable inky black heart with a deeply saturated dark red black hue. Wafting from the glass with terrific intensity are heady aromas of ripe blackberry, liquorice, dark plum and dark chocolate followed by some vanillin oak, earthy mocha and spice notes. Rich and opulent the palate is drenched in a tidal wave of blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits. Vanillin oak, earthy mocha, subtle fennel and spice elements are draped across the back half. Other reviews... Colour: gold. Nose: I’m finding a touch of shoe polish and of course a good deal of walnuts, green or aged, a classic sherry marker. It then veers towards bitter orange, always a development I enjoy, and also a bit of modelling clay that takes one straight back to childhood. A few hints of soot and dunnage, even a whiff of hessian. Could there be a little peat in this baby? Mouth: it’s a bit like the bourbon version, only drier still, properly on green walnut and even ashes. Still that very grassy, tight character, this certainly wasn’t a sweet sherry cask, or so it seems. That said, we don’t really find any peat on the palate, the impression on the nose seems to have been but a fleeting moment. Finish: long, still on those notes of green walnut and modelling clay. Comments: I think I slightly preferred the bourbon version, which was more direct and fresher, but this drier, more sherried take is also very good. 84 points - whiskyfun.com

Bladnoch released The Dragon Series back in 2023 as a collection of five single malts, drawing inspiration from the Dragon Curve, a fractional curve in mathematics that showcases predictability and chaos, natural order and beauty. The concept was that after blending, each expression in the series should capture a pivotal moment in the whisky-making process, highlighting the scale of variability, while celebrating the beauty that can emerge along the way.
Number one in the series, The Field, tells the journey from field to distillery. Each year, barley is harvested and undergoes malting, serving as the primary raw material for the distillery. But before it arrives at the facility, it's already been shaped by diverse forces of nature, environment, and the malting process. ...One might often think that modern whisky is an industrial product, made in facilities run by two or three people and some quasi-quantum computers. But then you read this on Bladnoch’s website and feel reassured: ‘The Dragon Series showcases the scale of variability encountered throughout the process, which is seemingly chaotic and unpredictable.’ That’s exactly what we love, is it not? Colour: pale white wine. Nose: apple cake and lemon cake, neither quite baked enough, which really brings out the cereal and yeasty notes we always enjoy. A few spring flowers and very gentle touches of honey. Feels rather close to those Bladnochs from the 1990s, really. Mouth: indeed, very typical, somewhere between Fanta and 7Up, fresh lemon juice, then fresh barley and orange juice. A darker colour and higher ABV are noteworthy on this, the fourth iteration in the Dragon Series, focussing on perhaps the most mysterious process in whisky making - maturation. The seasonal fluctuations in temperature and humidity, warehouse type and location, as well as the evaporation of the “angels’ share” all contribute to significant complexity to manage. For this edition, ageing took place in red wine hogsheads and first-fill bourbon casks chosen from the darkest and coldest areas in Bladnoch’s warehousing. On the nose, the scent of polished oak and honey come with an earthy undertone that suggests its warehouse origins. The palate features a sweet oak taste with wild blackberry notes. They say 'The Dragon Series is a tribute to the timeless power struggle between science and nature' An idea that's no doubt causing quite a stir over in Washington D.C. these days. Colour: very pale white wine. Nose: dry as a stick, showing plenty of grassiness, porridge, a fair few oatcakes and a touch of earthy roots. A smattering of very small pears over in the fruit department, which speaks of youth. Mouth: fruity notes of barley syrup and baked apples to start, then we're back on porridge and grains, the whole thing growing more malty and rather taut as it goes. A few fruits that haven’t quite ripened, but that's just how we like it. The texture is on the oily side. Finish: of medium length, returning to grassy tones with hints of lemon zest. Run by Laurent Charvin this small family estate has vineyard holdings of 8 hectares in Chateauneuf du Pape and 13 hectares in Cotes du Rhone. Certified organic the average age of the vines is over 50 years old. These Grenache based wines follow traditional winemaking techniques with no de-stemming and all aging takes place in cement tanks. Charvin’s Côtes du Rhône is regularly rated as one of the very best from this area and perhaps it is not surprising as the vines for this cuvee border directly on to the appellation for Chateauneuf du Pape in the northern sector where they are located.
Deep dark red black core with a dark red hue. Seductive black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry scents sail out of the glass with impressive lift. Scorched earth, herbs du Provence and peppered meat notes ensue. Rich, succulent black raspberry, liquorice and ripe black cherry fruits engulf the mouth framed by firm, chewy tannins which impart a muscular feel. Infusions of herbs du Provence, scorched earth and peppered meats the undercard. Ample in its power and concentration it finishes long and juicy yet quite robust.

This is classically styled but on the expressive and textural end of things, even at what is relatively modest alcohol, with acidity a key driver. Plump with varietal pear notes (both Williams and Bosc), red apple skin, cinnamon and poached apple. This has rolling layers of fruit marked by both generosity – of flavour and feel – and enough reserve, making it an eminently pleasing drink sans food, but also one that will happily hold its own with dishes fresh and bright to those with a bit more weight and fatty intensity. Intense and textural with a long zesty finish.
Fiano originates from a province in Campania, east of Naples and it’s perfectly suited to the McLaren Vale climate, so much so that it has become the regions fastest growing white wine category. Coriole planted Fiano in 2001 and their first commercial release was the 2005 vintage.
Fifteen percent of the blend was barrel fermented in older French hogsheads.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Fresh lime and Granny Smith apple scents jump out of the glass followed by hints of pear, subtle Mediterranean herb and mineral notes. Crunchy pear, lime and green apple fruits are delivered with plenty of intensity and textural volume over a back drop of mediterranean herbs and minerals. Zesty acidity leading into a long, snappy finish.

Mostly in tank, but also some complex-making nuances, with a small fraction seeing concrete ferment, some with a day or so on skins, a little in older oak – bit parts, perhaps, but all contributing meaningfully. Golden apples, fragrantly lilting orchard blossoms, quince, peach, green pear, citrus pith, both lemon and orange-skinned citrus, a mandarin/tangerine vein. It’s an effortless thing, easily textural, yet also crisp, with a lot of love to give. Drink by 2025.
