While the distinct notes of a traditional gin are still present, the infusion of leftover cacao husks from the chocolate-making process gives this gin a rich, velvety undertone of bittersweet chocolate. Native wattleseed and Riverland oranges further enhance the profile, lending a subtle sweetness and depth. The rich, smooth taste of dark chocolate takes centre stage, while the bright tone of Jaffa orange provides a refreshing contrast, and the toasted wattleseed lends a nutty undertone. Lending a rich chocolate note to classic cocktails, Chocolate Gin is also great partnered with a light tonic or ginger ale. 42% Alc./Vol.

    2023 Chateau d'Yquem Pre-Arrival Offer
    Sauternes, Bordeaux, FRANCE
    $799. 00
    Bottle
    $9588.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

As the only Sauternes property classified as Premier Cru Superieur, drinking a bottle of Chateau d'Yquem is an experience unlike any other. Situated in the epicentre of prime sweet wine production in France, their unique position and wealth of soil profiles allows d'Yquem to produce wines of enormous complexity with consistent accumulation of botrytis often in years when others struggle.

The 2023 Chateau d'Yquem completes a remarkable trio of vintages for this storied estate. It sits at a precise intersection of styles: possessing the crystalline purity of the 2021, yet anchored by the opulent power of the sun-kissed 2022. As always, d'Yquem is defined by its peerless balance. The 2023 manages to be simultaneously crisp and delicate, yet immensely concentrated, a vintage destined to reveal its full grandeur over the coming decades.

    Other Reviews....
With 153 grams per liter of residual sugar—placing it among the 10 most concentrated vintages in the château’s history—the 2023 d'Yquem ranks among the finest wines bottled here under Lorenzo Pasquini’s direction. It unfurls from the glass with a complex, vibrant and remarkably pure bouquet of pineapple, guava, mango, confit citrus, beeswax and spices. Full-bodied, dense and concentrated, it combines formidable depth with perfectly judged control, built around a fleshy core of fruit, framed by lively acidity and a crystalline texture and culminating in an endless, refined and ethereal finish. Yquem’s natural power is here masterfully harnessed by the vintage’s freshness and tension, revealing an aesthetic of precision and vibrancy encountered only in the estate’s greatest years—made all the more remarkable by the fact that the château now achieves even higher levels of concentration than a decade ago, without any perceptible increase in sweetness on the palate. Drink 2026 - 2076.

The 2023 Yquem, a blend of 70% Sémillon and 30% Sauvignon Blanc, contains 154 grams per litre of residual sugar—less than the 2022. As usual, the 2023 was matured in 100% new oak, mainly French, with a small percentage from Austria. The nose is so seductive that it should come with a warning sticker. Pure and mellow, it offers beguiling scents of wild honey, quince jelly, almond shavings and that signature hint of saffron destined to accentuate with age. It displays wonderful definition, though it does not have the “aromatic drama” of the previous vintage. The palate has exquisite balance and poise that belies the depth of this Yquem, though it is less exuberant, less ostentatious than the 2022. It is really the umami sensation that defines the 2023, how it caresses, almost soothes the grateful taste buds, vanilla and flecks of white chocolate lingering on the aftertaste. This will probably drink a little sooner than the 2022. If the 2023 does have a fault, it’s that it is so flattering in its flush of youth that it will be difficult to resist. Sublime. Drink 2030-2090.

Perfect aromas carry through to every milliliter of this wine, showing intense orange peel, honey, butterscotch, saffron, smoke and peat, with hints of coffee and dried apples. Full-bodied but weightless and silky, with an excellent balance of fruit, sweetness and spices. Some peanut brittle, dried oranges and lemons at the end. I can’t get over how wonderful this is now, but it can age forever. 154 g/L residual sugar. Drink or hold.

Power, freshness, depth, after the extremes of 2021 and 2022, this walks the line between the two, exceptional, mandarin, quince, mirabelle plums, white truffle, fresh fruit and confit fruit, a vibration of slate and steel, opulent but slices closed on the finish. The botrytis came early and quickly in 2023. Francis Mayeur in final vintage as consultant, after many years as inhouse winemaking team, Lorenzo Pasquini director. 154g/l residual sugar, 3.85ph, harvest September 14 to October 11.

The perfume bursts with a bouquet of flowers, candied lemon peels, pineapple, white peach, orange, mango, vanilla, saffron, and anise. It is a lively, bright, energetic vintage for Chateau d'Yquem. Rich, intense, opulent, sweet, and palate-coating, yet all of that is balanced by its explosive, racy acidity that provides lift, energy, and length. The finish begins slowly, building, intensifying, and expanding, hitting all four sides of your palate with its unique spicy character and its counterbalancing blend of perfectly ripe, sweet tropical fruits and refreshing acidity. The harvest is done in four passes, mostly during the second and third. About 60% of the harvest was included in the Grand Vin. In short, 2023 Château d'Yquem ROCKS! Drink from 2030-2100.

    $3000.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

In a world of wood-aged spirits distilled from raw materials throughout the year, Armagnac stands out as a product of viticulture, subject to annual growth cycles and variations inherent to 'vintages'. Blending multiple harvests to create a consistent house style remains common, however vintage-dated Armagnacs are another thing - distilled from a single harvest, grapes are moulded by the year’s climatic conditions, partly determining outturn and quality. Vines are cultivated to obtain acidic wines, low in alcohol, resulting in fruity and floral eaux-de-vie. Most vintages are potentially marketable, however it's not a standard practise. Eaux-de-vie from a single year requires particular care and attention. Distillation and ageing must be adapted to capture the individual character of the distillate, and the Cellar Master must decide on the period it should spend in new oak. The minimum is ten years (unlike blends), but if the Armagnac is deemed capable of extended ageing, it might mean 20, 50 or even 100 years in barrel. Thus, with experience and patience, these bottlings can enter the realm of top-tier spirits.

Connoisseurs love Vintage Armagnacs because they have the ability to surprise - or at the very least - deliver more distinctive profiles than a mass blended brandy. Producers classify their diversity into five primary tastes – spices, fruits, bakery, floral, and green – with three different weights, ranging from “fine, light, and easy to drink” to “classic, rich, and well-balanced,” up to the "more powerful and expressive" vintages.

Because they're prominently labelled with the year of production, these gems have become hugely popular as gifts whereby birthdays and anniversaries can be marked by a singular bottle - a way to turn back the clock via a liquid time capsule, rekindle memories and reflect. If you're lucky enough to secure a Vintage Armagnac but aren't ready to open it, store it upright so the alcohol doesn't attack the cork, in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight. Once opened, there's no hurry to finish it. These spirits don't oxidise quickly like a wine or Vintage Port, but they are best consumed within a few years, as recommended by the BNIA (Bureau National Interprofessionnel de l’Armagnac).

1964 is a very rare year - indeed, one of the rarest of the decade with stocks now extremely low.

Not quite the expected Apera matured Australian whisky profile: The sherry feels muted, the flavours suggesting oily, unsweetened peanut brittle dusted with cocoa, followed by spicy oak and hints of roasted chestnuts. Medium bodied. Keeps you coming back, as time in the glass develops a malty sweetness with a delicate fruitiness shining through. 51% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered. 1994 was considered a solid year in Armagnac. Production was significant so there's a lot of choice and styles vary depending on the houses. The brandies released to date are described as exuberant and very expressive.

Vineyards suffered heavy frosts in 1984, so production was well down making this vintage quite rare. The producers hadn’t seen such disastrous frosts like it since 1977. Bottles released to date reportedly offer notes of candied fruits and rancio.

2015 Signatory Vintage Glen Spey 9 Year Old 100 Proof Edition #37 Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $119. 99
    Bottle
    $1439.88 Dozen
    ABV: 57.1%

Considered by several whisky writers as "one of the most 'obscure' distilleries in Scotland", Glen Spey would have continued to slip under the radar of malt chasers, had it not been for a handful of favourable releases. Formerly known as the "Mill of Rothes", it was built in 1878 by James Stuart & Co (who later went on to buy the Macallan distillery). Always intended as a filler for blends, as with its neighbour, Glen Grant, pot stills are equipped with "purifiers", redirecting some vapour to reflux within the still to produce a less feinty and lighter spirit. This edition was matured in a first-fill sherry butt. 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Other reviews... Always these very affordable series from Signatory, with that heavily worked sherry that perhaps doesn’t always let the character of the distillate shine through, but does its job very, very well. Colour: full gold. Nose: ah this is pretty, there's a touch of exhaust fumes (not pleasant in the street but sometimes rather charming in your glass), then green walnuts, cherry stalks, and peach leaves. A few hints of satay sauce, followed by pear cake. With water: marked saponification but it fades quickly, then comes a mix of Indian spices, think tandoori seasoning. Mouth (neat): surprising, on mustard, pepper, tar and dark chocolate, quite the unusual trio. With water: this time, beyond the Indian spices, there's candied ginger and fir bud. Really very unusual. Finish: long, and there's even a flavour of poppadums at the end. Comments: very hard to categorise, this isn't your typical sherry cask. In any case, it feels much more Indian than those super Indian malt whiskies, ha. 84 points - whiskyfun.com

Scotch whisky lovers will be familiar with the concept of octaves. As with the Quarter Cask approach, essentially, the smaller barrel volume creates more wood-whisky interaction, soaking up barrel characteristics faster. While the rapid wood influence adds more vanilla and spice, it requires careful management to avoid over-oaking, which is why octaves are typically employed to 'refine' whiskies, improving colour and adding complexity over months as a finishing, rather than a full term process. Glenglassaugh take the concept to an extreme! According to the producers, expect "A delicious combination of citrus and sweet notes". Non chill filtered and natural colour. 44% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... I’ve tried quite a few octaves by other makers that had been too new-oaky (vanilla, coconut, and basta), but let’s see… Colour: pale gold. Nose: it’s got a ‘crafty’ side for sure, with a youth that shines through (porridge, pears) and some half-sweet, half-spicy oak, very ‘American’. Vanilla, ginger cake, then rather butterscotch and crème brulée. The earthy/bready touches in the background work well, this is not a new-oak bomb. Mouth: a creamy mouth feel, it almost flows like honey, and a very pleasant acidic sweetness mingle with grassy oak. Citron liqueur and green tea, pepper, a few grassy eau-de-vie-ish notes (I’ve distilled spent lees on day, the result had a few similar notes), some bay leaves perhaps… The oak’s influence never stops growing and rather makes me think of European oak this time. But I doubt it’s European oak. Finish: rather long, really grassy and bitter, not in a bad way at all. Herb cordial. The vanilla is back in the aftertaste and comes with oranges or citrons. Comments: a good example of some young malt from some active oak. This time, balance has been found.  78 points - whiskyfun.com

Glenglassaugh Octaves Peated Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    Reduced from $139.99
    $129. 99
    Bottle
    $1559.88 Dozen
    ABV: 44%

Distilled from richly peated malted barley, this whisky has been matured in octave casks, made from staves of a used cask. Octaves are approximately 1/8th the size of a butt. The smaller cask allows for more interaction between the wood and the spirit, giving the whisky a great depth of flavour in a short period of time. Bottled at 44%, non chill filtered and natural colour. Expect a delicate, sweet peated stye.

Other reviews... Colour: gold. Nose: could one use a mix of curry powder and antiseptic to smoke malted barley? Odd question, I know, but I do get quite some curry and quite some antiseptic, which is a combination that’s not as, well, as odd as you would think. Then we find more bandages and lemon juice, which is all fine. It’s actually got something slightly Laphroaiggy, not a bad benchmark for sure. Mouth: it’s not that I’m a peat head (I can hear you!), but the young distillate offered more resistance to the octaves, and the oak’s grassy/gingery side seems to be better integrated. Nice notes of lemongrass too, but the medicinal side has been lost on the palate. After all, Glenglassaugh’s not quite a coastal distillery, is it (I know some industry people are claiming that the whole of Scotland is coastal, which should imply that the place where you mature your whiskies does not matter. A long debate, not for here and not for now…) Finish: rather long, balanced, zesty/grassy and smoky. More ginger and pepper again in the aftertaste, that’s the octaves. Comments: a solid effort.  80 points - whiskyfun.com

A Riesling that is true to style and region, sourced from around Leasingham, where there are, and have been over many years, some of the finest Rieslings in the country made. The aroma is a lemon pith, tart lime, and slightly minerally combination, and the palate shows a typical tension, and yet there is a deep intensity. The generous fruit flavours are tightened by the crisp acidity, which focuses and extends the palate. That crunchy, pebbly minerality on the finish is a feature. Drink 2025-2035.

One of three wines now carrying the Church Block brand and given Shiraz is McLaren Vale’s leading red it makes sense to be part of such a high-profile team. Sourcing from several separate vineyards, this then stands as a regional expression of the variety, and quite a contemporary one at that. More than just a simplistic Shiraz plum fruit bomb, here we see savoury bouquet and flavours, Middle Eastern spices, braised root vegetables, black pepper, yet right in the core of the palate there’s an alluring burst of crimson to blue fruits, just enough to put any oak influence – both French and American with a tiny 8% new barrels – in its rightful background place. All up a lovely, friendly, very drinkable regional Shiraz.

The 2023 Blewitt Springs Grenache is an aromatic, floral, red-fruited affair, shaped by abundant, sandy tannins in the mouth and tailing out over a long finish. This is supple, saturating and silky in the mouth, delivering all of the pleasure and satisfaction that Grenache (especially Grenache from McLaren Vale) is wont to do. There are notes of garden rose, pink peppercorn, red licorice, raspberry, cherry and blood orange. This is a marvelous wine, my favorite of the Clarendon Hills Grenaches in this vintage. A superstar. The tannins are the highlight—they create chew and shape—despite the fruit being marvelous. 14% alcohol, sealed under Diam. Drink 2025-2038.

Fragrant, in a spicy way, fruits deep red and black, tar and a rugged, ferrous rockiness, with clove, black pepper, star anise, brown cardamom, red and purple florals and soused citrus peel. It’s not unusual here, but this really needs ample air to show its best. It has less heft than the Onkaparinga, but still plenty of power and structure, plus a supple viscosity across the palate. As said, air is needed, with floral notes filtering out and a greater sense of levity. Cellar for a couple of years to begin with or decant and stand for a half a day. Drink by 2033.

Round and full with pear, green to red apple and lime fruits, crisp, tangy acidity and a long saline laced finish.

This small planting (less than 1 hectare) of Fiano on the Jasper Hill property is located very close to the winery at the southern end of Georgia’s Paddock. The wine is made by Emily and Georgia Roberts and in the early years was produced entirely from purchased fruit. The 2025 vintage is a 50/50 blend of estate grown and purchased fruit which was partially fermented in used oak and bottled relatively early (under stelvin) to retain freshness.

Seriously swoon-worthy; Lo Stesso Fiano just keeps getting better and better with each release. The McNallys have worked with the grape for years and experience shows through in a complexity of flavours, textures and the kind of gentle savouriness that adds that extra layer of interest. Explores a world of intense citrus, of lemon balm, grapefruit pith and skin, lemon pastille and orange blossom aromatics, with pear, apple, quince and almond. So smooth; it roams fresh and long, aided by a subtle phenolic grip and tangy acid drive. So good on every level! Drink by 2030.

From a single block, planted with MV6 in 2004. Significantly better than the '24 Shed Pinot Noir and for not a whole lot more in price. A close-planted, north-easterly vineyard of MV6 is the home of this Pinot, which shows intense, ripe aromas without being excessive. The nose is delightful, with heady aromas of red cherry, strawberry, confectionery, rhubarb and some earthiness and stemminess – the tertiary characters are still yet to present themselves. The Pinot is still quite a youngster, as it often takes a while for it to settle down in bottle and show its best, so while it’s lovely now, it’ll get even better with a bit more bottle age.

Antinori’s Peppoli was first made in 1985 and year in year out proves to be a reliable, great value Chianti Classico. Aromas of red cherry and red currant sail out of the glass trailed by some red liquorice, fresh herb, delicate earth and faint spicy tobacco end notes. Juicy red currant, cherry and red liquorice fruits line the mid weighted palate with notions of earth, fresh garden herbs, gentle tobacco and spice the undercard. Bec Duffy loves Chardonnay and it shows, from the way the fruit is cradled and gently plucked at the exact ideal moment to the caress of very expensive oak that it matures in. Peach melba, lemonade fruit and gingerbread spice. This is edible from start to finish. Creamy thanks to its 50% Malo but with electric energy of acidity. There are plenty of reductive, smokey Chardonnays out there but this turns you head in the pedigree and total class act of the fruit itself. It’s princess Kate incarnate and it’s totally mesmerizing and full of fortitude and charm. This is a celebration of the Tamar Valley and a real standout! Drink with a fillet of coral trout in ginger and scallion sauce. Drink now or cellar for another 8-10 years. Drink 2025-2035.

2024 was an excellent vintage in Tasmania, certainly warmer than the preceding year. The juice underwent a wild fermentation in barrel, before half underwent malolactic fermentation. Maturation was in French oak, 50% of it new, for ten months. Gleaming pale lemon, the nose exhibits some spicy oak notes, but integration is proceeding well. Expect the wine to look even better in two to three years. We have notes of cashews, nutmeg, cinnamon, peaches, pears and glacéd lemon. Good concentration throughout, the wine is well balanced with impressive intensity and serious length. Suffice to say, that the length and the way the wine maintains its intensity over the journey is one of the highlights of what is a cracking Chardonnay. This is a ten year proposition. Love it. Drink 2025-2035.

    2015 Vega Sicilia Unico

    Bottle
    $13800.00 Dozen
    ABV: 14.5%

Bodegas Vega Sicilia is Spain's most prestigious wine estate, and has produced some of the most famous wines in the country's history. Founded in the 1860's and based in Ribera del Duero, two hours from Madrid, initial plantings at the estate included Bordeaux grapes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec, along with the indigenous Tinto Fino (Tempranillo). Unico is their most well-known wine, made from at least 80% Tempranillo and small amounts of Bordeaux varietals, and released after 10 years of maturation.

    Other Reviews....
The 2015 Único comes from a year with a fast ripening, and they had to harvest early to keep the crunchiness of the fruit. This was the first harvest produced 100% by winemaker Gonzalo Iturriaga. The aging was five years in oak, one and a half years in barrels and three and a half years in oak vats. It's a big vintage, produced with 96% Tinto Fino and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon. It's ripe, with 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.88 and 4.8 grams of acidity. The grapes were cooled down for one day, then the bunches were selected and fermented with a pied de cuve in vats. It's a ripe and concentrated vintage, with a classical modern Vega Sicilia nose that's expressive, aromatic and open, with notes of dark cherries, spice and cigar box. It has a medium- to full-bodied palate with abundant fine-grained tannins, good balance and the rustic elegance of the best Ribera del Dueros. In 2015, they produced 84,184 bottles, 3,645 magnums and some larger formats, less than in 2014, which was the largest production of Único ever. It was bottled in May 2021. Drink 2027-2042.

The 2015 Vega Sicilia Unico is Tinta del País with 4% Cabernet Sauvignon from Ribera del Duero. The nose is aromatically complex, with balsamic notes, forest floor, delicate herbs such as rosemary and thyme and an evolved profile showing vanilla, maraschino cherry and dried fruit. Silky and layered, the palate features chalky tannins and a smooth texture, offering depth and nuance. Subtle oak, fresh plum and herbs combine for a long, refined finish. A classic expression of elegant Ribera. Drink 2025-2045.

Sit back and enjoy this Unico if you are going to open it now. Exotic spices and touches of balsam and cumin come up after the unleashing of blackberries, chocolate, iron, incense and violets. So fine-grained and polished, with a mouthful of velvety tannins that are so cohesive, close-knit and still reactive. Impeccably structured, it’s vertical before going extremely long and linear. A consistent Unico that seduces with a hint of iron-like minerality and rusticity. Drink on release or hold.

One of Spain’s best-known and beloved wines, this vintage, the 2015 Unico, like always, saw five years of aging in barrel and vat and another five years in bottle. It was bottled in May 2021. Blending 96% Tempranillo and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Vega Sicilia estate, usually from the same plots of 40+-year-old vines, it opens in expressive, juicy, lush pomegranate and dark cherry carried by supple, silky tannins and bright acidity. The length and structure are remarkable. The grapes were harvested “al dente,” when they were crisp, fresh, and juicy, perfectly ripe. There is tremendous balance between the wine’s acidity and freshness and full-bodied power. This will age 60 years and is winemaker Gonzalo Iturriaga's first vintage. Drink 2025-2085.

    Virginie Boone - jebdunnuck.com

Very whole and round with a generous width on the mid-palate offset by an assertive energy, supported by vivid acid and a well-presented tannic framework. An interesting counterpoint to the more chiseled linearity of the 2014 iteration. With all elements very much in their right place, but fruit still unapologetically punchy, it'll be interesting to see how this evolves as tertiary complexity softens the primary and secondary vividness. Cocoa powder, dry tobacco leaves and seaweed hover over juicy plum, dark cherry and black olive. Very long, spicy finish with lingering tapenade and salty liquorice. Drink 2025-2050.

    Other Reviews....
The 2020 Valbuena is from a year marked by COVID-19 and lots of rain before the harvest, which resulted in a more ethereal wine, with 14% alcohol, a pH of 3.9 and 4.45 grams of acidity. It was produced with 97% Tinto Fino and 3% Merlot, cooled down for 24 hours and then fermented with indigenous yeasts from a pied de cuve in stainless steel. It matured in barrel and oak vats during the first year, and in the second one, it aged exclusively in oak vats of different sizes, 8,500 and 21,000 liters. In 2020, the wine is finer-boned, more fluid and only medium-bodied, perhaps because of the dilution from the rain; the tannins are fine-grained and polished, but there's less juiciness in the wine. It calls for food. With time in the glass, the wine opens up and becomes more aromatic, and it even seems to gain juiciness and change texture. This is a production of 186,286 bottles, 5,673 magnums and some larger formats. It was bottled in May 2023. Drink 2025-2037.

The 2020 Valbuena 5º is Tinta del País from Ribera del Duero. Balsamic and herbal aromas mingle with forest, red fruit, cherry, violet and a hint of apple peel on the nose. The palate is intense, with a velvety texture, moderate concentration and enveloping flow. Chalky tannins and a touch of creaminess define the structure. Ample and richly flavored, with subtle oak in the background. A fine example of elegant Ribera. Drink 2025-2040.

Valbuena 5 used to be the baby Unico, and nowadays it is more like its younger brother with a lot of resemblance and just a bit less depth and tannins. Valbuena 5 comes from younger vines and sometimes different parcels from Unico. On the palate, this is more open and linear, while Unico is more profound and vertical. Notes of iron, blackberries, cedar, minerals and cocoa powder. Medium- to full-bodied with melted tannins and a long, long finish. Drinkable from 2025, but will hold for years.

The 2020 Valbuena 5° ages five years in oak and bottle, which gives it its name. Harvest was challenging due to Covid and rain, requiring due diligence in the field and a faster, earlier harvest than anticipated, the grapes coming from the Vega Sicilia estate’s vines with about 35 years of age. It’s an ethereal, medium-bodied wine of lovely delicacy and elegance, 97% Tempranillo blended with 3% Merlot, then aged 12 months in French and American oak, six months in stainless steel and then 18 months in bottle. Blackcurrant, cedar, and balsamic highlight a citrusy freshness. It will hit its prime in five years and age another 20-25. Drink 2025-2050.

    Virginie Boone - jebdunnuck.com

Produced with a selection form the more ethereal parcels that don't deliver the power sought for Unico, Valbuena 5º is however much more than a younger sibling of the iconic wine. The 2020 vintage, a child of a challenging growing season, both due to natural and operational challenges (remember Covid?...), it is a great achievement of nuanced power and detailed complexity, with a luscious fruit core lined with oregano, dried sage and thyme. Dark chocolate and roasted coffee beans build a broody background layer while Assam and Oolong tea leaves add umami depth. Beautiful detail and depth to the tannins. Drink 2025-2040.

Bodegas Vega Sicilia is Spain's most prestigious wine estate, and has produced some of the most famous wines in the country's history. Other Reviews....
The vintage released in 2025 is the 2021 Alión, a year to remember, one of the best in recent times. 2021 was relaxed and textbook in all senses, with snow in the beginning of the year, a mild spring disturbed only by frost in Pesquera that didn't affect other villages and a relatively cool summer that slowed things down, and the grapes ripened to perfection without rain after September. They used grapes from 13 different villages throughout the Ribera del Duero, from a total of 130 hectares. The grapes were cooled down for 24 hours, and once destemmed, they were put in the oak and stainless steel vats, where they underwent a five-day cold soak and then native fermentation through a "pied de cuve." The wine has 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.81 and 4.8 grams of acidity (tartaric). It's very fresh and fruit-driven, with the balance and elegance of the cooler year, and it's a little austere, with very elegant and polished tannins and a different quality, when the grapes ripen slowly. They believe 2024 has the potential to be like 2021, after the 2022 and 2023 vintages were a lot more challenging. This is a large production of 244,244 bottles, 7,075 magnums and some larger formats. It was bottled in June 2023. Drink 2025-2040.

The 2021 Alión comes from Ribera del Duero. The nose is slightly liqueur-like, with herbs and red fruit complemented by oak and a cherry note. Forest floor emerges later. The palate is juicy and polished, with fine-grained tannins and a slightly compact mid-palate. It finishes with a well-integrated note of aged fruit. Drink 2025-2040.

A pretty deep but fresh and harmonious wine that can be consumed early. It’s from a blend of Ribera del Duero vineyards. Fascinating aromas of fine spices, dark chocolate, dark cherries, blackberries and cedar wood. Medium- to full-bodied with fine, chalky tannins and a lasting finish. Impeccable balance. A blend of plots from across the region of varying altitudes and viticulture, some estate and some not, from Soria to Valbueno de Duero, the 2021 Alion is a full-bodied 100% Tempranillo of great finesse from an outstanding vintage noted for its balance and silkiness. Juicy red plum coats a palate of gorgeous length and breadth. Aged in both French and American oak for 12 months, with another 18 months in bottle, it shows the excellence of the year and the producer’s winemaking approach. Drinking well now, it will continue to develop over the next 15-20 years. Drink 2025-2045.

    Other Reviews....
The 2020 Pintia is from a powerful year of concentration, so they were very careful with the harvest date, did a softer vinification trying to extract less and included amphorae and less toast in the élevage. It's opulent and juicy but gentle. The wine reached 15.5% alcohol and has a pH of 3.9 with 4.4 grams of acidity. It fermented in stainless steel and oak vats with indigenous yeasts. It was a very warm and dry vintage in Toro, with a heat wave before the harvest, so they had to rush to pick the grapes; and still, the wine is richer and more powerful, even though the amphorae helped them contain the sensation of ripeness in the wine. It has a heady and ripe profile that's very aromatic and showy, with notes of very ripe berries, prunes and decayed violets, with a faint volatile twist. It matured 70% in new barrels, 10% in used barrels, 10% in stainless steel and 5% in clay pots. It's full-bodied and lush, with abundant, slightly dusty tannins. It's a ripe and powerful vintage for Pintia, but it evolves nicely in the glass, showing less of its ripe side with time, which to me is a good sign. Some 14,304 half bottles, 209,009 bottles, 6,645 magnums and some larger formats were produced. It was bottled in August 2022. Drink 2026-2032.

The 2020 Pintia is Tempranillo from Toro. It opens with fine plum, delicate spice, cherry, barrel notes and a hint of orange peel. A touch of jam adds to the warmth. Rich and intense, the palate is broad and textured with firm tannins. For a Toro, the mouthfeel is unusually smooth, with a core of red fruit. Nicely balanced. Drink 2025-2040.

Another combination of freshness and profoundness from Toro. Blackberries, graphite, ashtray, sandalwood, cocoa powder and dark olives on the nose. Fresh-veined, chalky tannins tighten the palate, with a nervy backbone. The tannins extend to a lengthy finish. Ripe but fresh. Drink from 2026.

Another accomplished vintage of Vega Sicilia's Toro project. Technical director Gonzalo Iturriaga says it was a challenging vintage, with illusive freshness. But ideal harvest timing and maceration management allowed him to deliver a balanced wine, with superbly integrated alcohol. Intense, expressive aromas of dark chocolate, dried black olive, prune and liquorice root mingle with Assam tea (for an elegant smoky allure) and crunchy blueberries. A pleasant rusticity, lined with dried sage, defines the grippy, savoury tannins. Long finish, spicy and earthy. Drink 2025-2040.
