2023 Lowestoft Estate Chardonnay - Last Stocks
    Tasmania, AUSTRALIA
    $67. 99
    Bottle
    $815.88 Dozen
    ABV: 13%
    Closure: Stelvin

Lowestoft is one of Tasmania’s most exciting producers, home to some of the region’s oldest vines, planted in 1986 just outside Hobart. Since Kiwi-born Liam McElhinney took the reins in 2020, the estate’s reputation has soared—most notably with La Maison Pinot Noir, which took out the prestigious Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy in 2023. With mature vines, precision winemaking and growing acclaim, Lowestoft is fast becoming a producer to watch in Tasmanian wine.
Sourced from 78% Tasman Peninsula and 22% East Coast fruit, the 2023 Chardonnay was hand-picked, chilled, and whole-bunch pressed to seasoned 300L French oak. Wild fermented with solids, the wine was handled in two parts—half sulphured post-ferment, half stirred on lees without SO₂ for three months—before 9 months’ maturation and blending. Taut and mealy expect notes of ripe nectarine, grapefruit zest, cashew and flint, this is a Chardonnay of tension, texture, and precision.
    Alc. 13%

    Other Reviews....
Coal River Valley chardonnay, whole-bunch pressed into seasoned French oak (300L) for wild ferment before maturing for nine months in oak prior to blending and bottling. Pale straw, with vibrant aromas of grapefruit, white peach and nectarine cut with hints of struck-match complexity, spiced oatmeal, almond paste and riverstone. There's a lot going on here. It's like an orchestra; you can hear it as a whole but are able to delineate and pick out individual instruments, politely golf (orchestra?) clapping as you go, marvelling at the tautly stretched fruit canvas, umami-rich acid line and overall composition and drive. A cracker. Drink 2024-2034.

Single-vineyard pinot noir from the Lower Derwent Valley. Vibrant ruby with aromas of exotically-spiced red cherry, raspberry and red plum fruits. Hints of dried mountain herbs, citrus blossom, char siu, sandalwood, dried cranberry, amaro, undergrowth and Peking duck. Lithe and sapid on the palate with a touch of sour cherry, pillowy tannins and a spicy, complex finish that flows on for a pleasing amount of time. Drink 2023-2035.

Fragrant with pomegranates, red currants, sage and hints of incense and cola candy. Plenty of voluptuous cherry fruit character, a medium to full body, satiny tannins and an abundantly fruity finish. Screw cap.

The Lowestoft winery has been on a roll in recent years, picking up major awards here and there.
This wine kept unfurling as I sat with it. There are layers and there are nuances. It’s an autumnal Pinot Noir, almost-but-not-quite a bit tomato leafy, with smoky/reductive characters in play too. Its style is pretty clear. But the fruit is ripe, cherried, strawberried, boysenberried even, and cedarwood oak is beautifully integrated, and there’s a minerally crackle to the tannin. In short, it feels and tastes like a class act, and one that will reward cellaring. The tannin profile itself is of note; a conduit of flavour and a magnetic, binding force, like a river or a stream, pushing and pulling as the wine flows. Drink 2026 - 2034+

2012 Benromach Contrasts High Enzyme Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $149. 99
    Bottle
    $1799.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Here’s a novel Benromach that marks a first for the distillery: Released in early 2025 in the UK and made using unpeated barley with a high enzyme content (otherwise employed for the production of Grain Whisky or in industrial brewing). A contrast to the usually robust and slightly smokey Benromach, this is instead a fresher style with fruity facets and sweet and savoury notes, including apple aromas, lots of citrus fruits, sweet pineapple and honeycomb as well as notes of jasmine and peppermint. Distilled in 2012 and aged for twelve years, it comes bottled at 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... A playful series by Benromach, featuring some relatively classic elements (more peat) and some more unusual ones, such as a comparison of kiln-dried and air-dried oak, or this high-enzyme malt, which is usually used to produce grain whisky. This is what is called high-DP malt with a lot of nitrogen (DP = diastatic power), and it’s used to convert the mash into fermentable sugars. Typically, about 10% is added to grains like maize or wheat. It’s worth noting that in Scotland, the use of additional enzymes in other forms is not allowed, though it’s permitted elsewhere. Let’s taste this high-DP malt, which should be sweeter and maybe even a little sugary… Colour: white wine. Nose: indeed, it’s very sweet, evoking bottled apple juice, an enormous pile of marshmallows, and touches of very vanilla-forward oak. It feels quite far removed from those slightly ‘dirty’, robust, and smoky Benromachs we love so much. Mouth: yes, it’s sweet, with plenty of apple again, marzipan, grapefruit, and above all a rather noisy oakiness. A standard Benromach would normally handle such situations brilliantly, but this baby Benromach (if I may) struggles a bit with the wood. It almost reminds one of a young Auchentoshan. Finish: medium length, with a hint of orange and perhaps papaya, then more apple juice and a lingering sensation of wood, almost like sawdust. Comments: not bad at all, really, but perhaps best suited for our friends who already have all the ‘normal’ Benromach expressions on their shelves. And remember, it’s only experimental. 82 points - whiskyfun.com

Delord Floc de Gascogne Rouge (700ml)
    Armagnac, FRANCE
    $44. 99
    Bottle
    $539.88 Dozen
    ABV: 17%

Echoing Cognac's own Pineau des Charentes, this Gascon specialty is made by blending the partially fermented juice of Merlot, Cabernet and Cabernet Franc grapes with one-third Delord Armagnac. The mixture is then aged in old oak barrels to preserve the fresh fruitiness. It's a charming, medium sweet style, with the body and character of ruby port, recommended as an aperitif with foie gras, melons or as an after dinner treat. 17% Alc./Vol.

Aberfeldy 15 Year Old Cadillac Cask Finish Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $149. 99
    Bottle
    $1799.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

"...a delightful whisky and one of Aberfeldy’s best ever." - drinkhacker.com

Finishing this 15-year-old Aberfeldy in Semillon sweet white wine casks from Cadillac brings a balance of opulence and freshness to the whisky. Malt Master, Stephanie Macleod sourced the casks from a 40-hectare estate in the heart of Entre-deux-Mers, Gironde, just south of Bordeaux. Exuding notes of yellow fruits, florals, and a burst of citrus, seamlessly melding with Aberfeldy's signature soft, honeyed character, the wine influence makes the whisky brighter than the 12 year old, also giving it more body and a longer finish. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... A 15 year old single malt finished in French semillon “Cadillac” white wine casks. I presume Cadillac refers to the region of France near Bordeaux, known for its sweet wine production, but details are scarce. This is a delightful whisky and one of Aberfeldy’s best ever. The nose is beautiful and sweet, though there’s a slightly savory quality that evokes notes of dried flowers, toasted oak, and a gentle maritime edge. Lemon curd and tangerine are the most prominent fruit elements, but these are kept in check, at least for now. The palate is where this whisky really shines, as all of the above come together in beautiful fashion, really showcasing the citrus notes of lemon and orange, filtered through golden syrup, gentle sandalwood, and a layer of baking spices. Cohesive but complex, it’s bright and immersive, with a noteworthy layer of honey on the finish. Sauternes is made (in part) from semillon grapes, and I have to assume this whisky was finished in a similar type wine barrel. No complaints from me. This review was delayed because I broke my first sample bottle; very glad I stuck it out waiting for a replacement. - drinkhacker.com

Overeem Distillery Single Cask OHD-080 12 Year Old Single Malt Australian Whisky (700ml)
    Tasmania, AUSTRALIA
    $450. 00

    $5400.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

This is it. The final cask from Overeem's 12 Year Old Bourbon series. Each has paid tribute to distillery founder and Tasmanian Whisky Pioneer, Casey Overeem, but has also aimed to celebrate the return of Overeem Whisky to its founding family. This expression symbolises all of the above, and simply stands alone as a delicious single cask whisky that upholds all of the qualities and attributes of the previous editions in the series. It speaks of Casey's dedication to quality and consistency, his meticulous eye for detail across all aspects of whisky creation, and his overarching promise "to create a whisky that would one day stand alongside the great whiskies of the world." Bottled at 46% with no chill filtration.

Notes from the producers... Nose: Bounty chocolate bar, sherbet, vanilla syrup, banana & candied orange peel. Palate: Beautiful Tasmanian malted barley, rich oils, fruit tingles, creme brulee, stone fruits & toffee. Finish: Fruit tingle, lemon zest, vanilla & fresh buttered raisin toast.

"...a silky and dessert-filled experience that is unlike any other Redbreast I’ve encountered." - drinkhacker.com

Bridging the gap between the distillery's older and younger offerings, Redbreast 18 Year Old is a novel and welcome addition to the range. While ex-bourbon casks are included, this new expression relies mostly on first-fill oloroso casks, also sporting whiskeys aged in barrels that previously held cream sherry - a first for the brand. Says Master Blender, Ian McCabe, "By incorporating cream sherry casks sourced from the Antonio Páez Lobato cooperage, we’ve created a whiskey that boasts a rich profile of dark chocolate, blackcurrants and hazelnuts.” It contrasts against its nearest neighbour, the 15-year-old, which he describes as more savoury and herbaceous. Also notable is the addition of liquid aged in Ruby Port, a component that was until now used exclusively in the top-of-the-line 27-year-old and the even rarer Dream Cask. By all reports, Redbreast 18 year old is a cracker that ups the richness on others in the line up, making for a superb dessert whiskey. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The nose is luxuriously appealing, with milk chocolate, maraschino cherry, bramble, black currant, Nutella, baked citrus, apricot, mango, oak spices, toasted nuts, and cinnamon bark. Smooth and polished on the palate, the complex cask regime serves up flavors of milk chocolate, licorice, black grape, sultana, date, ginger root, currants, and clove. The finish serves up dried fruit and licorice, with hints of leather and coffee bean. 94 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...The nose is rich and expressive and clearly inspired by those newer cask types. Top notes of strawberry shortcake, sugared almonds, and black cherry are airy but still decadent, acquiring an almost creamy texture with time in the glass. The aroma is elevated further by undertones of vanilla bean and crème brulee with fresh berries. A hint of peppery pot still spice adds some energy to an otherwise silky and dessert-filled experience that is unlike any other Redbreast I’ve encountered. The palate follows a similar theme, lush and syrupy initially with cherry cordial and blackberry jam, veering almost too far into the dessert dram lane. Things course correct however on the midpalate with more traditional Redbreast notes of white pepper, breakfast cereal, banana pudding, and candy apple before finding remarkable harmony on a long, warm finish accented with ripe red berries, vanilla cream, and candied ginger. Truly impressive. Without having sampled the 27-year-old, I have to say this is my favorite Redbreast to date. - drinkhacker.com

Established relatively recently in 2002, Tellurian has quickly established itself as one of Heathcote’s leading producers. In addition to Shiraz, they have expanded their vineyard plantings to include a multitude of Rhone and Italian varieties. Heathcote’s warm days, cool nights and ancient Cambrian soils are ideally suited for the production of this Rhone styled blend which was matured for a period of 10 months in seasoned French oak barriques.

A bomb of flavour with juicy dark fruits exploding across the palate.

Deep dark red black core with a purple red tinged hue. Delightful raspberry, liquorice, ripe dark cherry and dark plum aromas jump out of the glass with wonderful intensity. Whiffs of incense and peppered dried herbs are also evident. The rich, mid weighted palate delivers a juicy explosion of spicy dark raspberry, liquorice, cherry and plum fruit. Infusions of incense, scorched earth and peppered dried herbs the undercard. Boasting ample freshness, outstanding concentration and velvet smooth tannins, it has a super long, power packed finish that’s bursting with succulence.

A rich, juicy, mid weighted Shiraz that’s long, elegant and peppery.

Introduced due to the relative scarcity of Best’s Thomson Family and Bin No. 0 Shiraz wines, the Bin No.1 Shiraz aims to provide an introduction to Great Western Shiraz style at a price point that gives the wine broader market access. Made predominantly from Best’s own vineyards it combines the varietals generosity with the region's cool climate elegance.

Deep midnight black colour with a dark red hue. Elevated dark plum and liquorice aromas mix with gently smoked vanillin cedar, earthy fennel and peppered dried herb notes. Rich, juicy and fleshy textured, the mid weighted palate is flooded with pepper infused dark plum and liquorice fruits which meld into a spicy vanillin cedar, scorched earth and fennel back drop. Polished fine grained yet structured tannins. Concludes long, elegant and peppery with an abundance of succulent fruit.

This release is on song. Black pepper and peppercorn characters float through cherry and plum fruit flavour. It's lively, it has enough depth, it finishes well and it charms throughout. The fine-grained, savoury aspect of the tannin here is of particular note. If you like the Great Western style, you can buy this with confidence. Drink by 2033.

This is good. A cooler climatic expression that remains distinctly Australian, rather than playing the reductive hand of an ersatz Rhone. An exceptional nose of mace, clove, blue fruits, olive and briar, backed by a wave of beef bouillon and iodine-umami warmth. The tannins, a clatter across the middle, with a bow of dutiful acidity drawn to just the right degree of tension. Some scrubby menthol dries the finish ever so slightly. This said, this is a delicious wine of immense personality and soul. Drink or hold.

Uchu Umeshu is made with premium Oushukubai ume from Oita, and is aged for a minimum of three years. The extra ageing lends shimmering copper highlights to the amber toned hue of this rich and bold umeshu. Initial nosing sparks memories of Portello, cough lozenge, a hint of spearmint, before the subtle plum and peach notes show with air. Deep and viscous, the generous sweetness amplifies the flavours, as does the alcohol. Displaying a pleasing mix of red berry and plum flavours with more savoury vanilla, nougat, and tonka bean flavours, there's a lot to take in. One to serve over ice or with soda as a long drink. 20% Alc./Vol. Refrigerate after opening.

Ripe if decidedly cool aromas are more classic in style with nuances of Granny Smith apple, mineral reduction, petrol and more spice wisps. The super-sleek, dense and gorgeously textured medium-bodied flavors are akin to rolling tiny rocks around the mouth on the balanced and impressively long finale. This is quite firm but not especially austere though it could use better depth. Drink through 2032+.

The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru has a slightly more appley, linear and stonier bouquet than the more comely Folatières. You could argue the aromatics deliver more typicité. The palate is well-balanced, crisp and taut, with plenty of crushed stone character and more complexity towards the finish. This Puligny carries intellectual weight and should age well in bottle. 40% whole bunch, not room enough in the vat for more! Dense purple, the nose slightly more reticent as the serious side of Grèves impinges. A lovely grain to the tannins, a robust heart to the wine. Slightly darker fruit emerges at the back, all good for the long term. Drink from 2031-2038.

De Montille owns a magnificent 1.26-hectare parcel in Beaune Grèves just south of Bouchard's Baby Jesus, planted in iron and clay soils over sandy limestone. The vines delivered a complex, compelling wine in 2022: a ripe, plummy fruit with a savoury, gamey edge and a firm, saline undercurrent. Half of the grapes were fermented as whole clusters with a combination of punching down and pumping over. The structure is now supple and silky, yet enough tannin suggests that this will age well. Robert Napier, for whom this whisky is named, led quite the life as a Marine Engineer. He set up his own business in 1815 and the quality of his steam engines soon put him in high demand. He expanded his business in 1841 to include an iron shipbuilding yard in Govan (across the river from the Clydeside). Several of Scotland’s most esteemed shipbuilders apprenticed under him and he was made the primary engine builder for the Admiralty after he proved that his engines were cheaper and more reliable than those built on the Thames in London. Clydeside have adopted Napier's mantra of "quality, quality, quality." That focus on quality includes longer fermentation times - 72 hours, compared with the 48 hours that are standard at larger distilleries, plus slower distillations. “We’ve instilled that into everyone in the production team, and everyone’s bought into it — there’s no rushing the distillation so they can knock-off early on a Friday,” says Master Distiller, Alistair McDonald.

The whisky that bears Napier's name is an oloroso sherry cask matured 6 year old, promising notes of ripe berries, sweet rose, orange marmalade, cherry and vanilla with a warming clove and ginger finish. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... A satisfying sherry bomb of a dram with little in the way of youth and no sign of any immaturity. The prominence of the oak suggests some good quality casks – with plenty of life in them – were utilised in the making of the thing and that all adds to the intensity of the experience. Perhaps if I was nitpicking, the finish seemed a wee bit on the short side but that might be something that develops over subsequent batches. In the meantime, this is an impressive release from the Clydeside and could be one to keep an eye on in the years to come – especially if you love a sherry-matured dram. - ascotonscotch.com

Ever since the Kinclaith stills at Strathclyde fell silent, Glasgow has been without a malt whisky distillery. The city's whisky renaissance recently took another step forward with The Clydeside, the second distillery to open there in over 100 years. Owners, Morrison Glasgow Distillers have been synonymous with single malts for generations. The family’s independent bottling business, A.D. Rattray, traces its roots back to 1868. For their latest project, the family worked closely with the late Dr. Jim Swan to refine wood selections and develop a ‘light but fruity spirit’, less grassy than other Lowland malts, instead veering toward a spicier Speysider. The concept was "...to reflect Glasgow’s past in bringing tobacco and spices to the UK."  An inaugural distillation took place on the 6th November 2017 and the distillery's first whisky was bottled in 2021.

Like other newcomers (think Lochlea, Raasay or The Hearach), Clydeside's presentation is sleek and modern, designed to stand out on the shelves. A nautical theme is evident on the labels, split in half by a horizontal stripe, echoing the Plimsoll line along a ship’s side indicating the maximum depth to which it may be safely immersed when loaded with cargo. The whiskies arrive reasonably priced and it's pleasing to note that they're bottled at a minimum of 46%, without chill filtration.

The Stobcross is named after a historic cross which once marked the route to Dumbarton Rock. The whisky is matured in a combination of Bourbon and Sherry casks. It's a fresh, lively style with floral notes, tropical tones, orchard fruits and hints of white pepper.

Other reviews... The Stobcross is obviously youthful, and it’s light, fruity and uniformly enjoyable, but to expect anything more than this would be unreasonable – it’s the first output from a completely new distillery. The flavour components that I’m finding show it’s got the makings of really interesting whisky – the tobacco whiffs in particular, but it does, like Wally said when we were chatting about it recently, feel like it could have benefitted with a little bit longer in the cask if only to develop the hints of flavours that always seem to be at arms reach. You want to grab hold of them and give them a good scrutinising, but they remain elusive, distant and frustratingly fleeting. A good opening gambit however and, with more time spent in the casks to develop the interesting flavour signatures, there’s no doubt the spirit flowing from the Clydeside Distillery will deliver the experience hinted at in the Stobcross. There’s a lot to be excited about and, with new and re-established distilleries popping up each year, Clydeside is perfectly positioned to become a prominent presence in what’s becoming Glasgow’s 21st century industrial revolution. - dramface.com

    Barsac, Bordeaux, FRANCE
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

One of the superstars of Barsac, the wines are typically noted for their elegance and style rather than weight and richness. At 38.5 hectares in size, Coutet is one of the largest vineyards in the region, with plantings consisting of 75% Semillon, 23% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle. Fermentation takes place in barrel of which 50% are new with further ageing in oak for 18 months.

    Other Reviews....
The 2024 Coutet was picked over six tries although the final ones were not used with 134 g/L residual sugar this year. It has quite an intense bouquet with beautifully defined lemon thyme and light peach aromas. The palate is well balanced with a vivacious opening, lively apricot and quince notes and concentration effortlessly offset by the silver thread of acidity. Composed and persistent on the finish, this is a superb Coutet. Drink 2028-2055.

Dried mangoes, pineapple, sweet lemons and some dried durian. Nicely unctuous with a long, flavorful finish. Waxy and medium- to full-bodied for a Barsac.

Orange blossom and lemon rind on the nose, soft and gentle aromatics. Clean and fresh, this has a lovely purity to it, not so sweet with some bitterness that comes in on the mid palate but this has a sleek frame and good definition to the elements. Pear, peach and a hint of honeyed orange. Pure and pristine. Drink 2026 - 2040.

    2024 Chateau Montrose Pre-Arrival Offer
    Saint Estephe, Bordeaux, FRANCE
    $280. 00
    Bottle
    $3360.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

This historic large estate, situated atop the Gironde in Saint-Estèphe, is renowned for producing some of Bordeaux's most exceptional and enduring wines. Over the past 15 years it has enjoyed significant investment, resulting in the establishment of a state-of-the-art winery and cellars. Substantial efforts have also being made in the vineyards. When Olivier and Martin Bouygues acquired Château Montrose from the Charmolüe family in 2006, the property boasted 17 hectares of pre-clonal vines dating back to the early 20th century. Through a meticulous massale selection program 80 promising clones, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, have been identified for replanting purposes. Similar endeavors are now focused on Merlot, utilizing a plot behind the château acquired from Phélan-Ségur. Additionally, experimental cover crops are being introduced, and cultivation techniques are being adjusted to minimize disturbance to the soil microbiome. The winemaking approach remains traditional, with macerations lasting approximately three weeks and maturation taking place in around 60% new oak barrels.

    Other Reviews....
A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, the 2024 Montrose is a serious, muscular effort that numbers among the wines of the vintage. Unwinding in the glass with notes of cassis, burning embers, cigar wrapper and iris, it's medium to full-bodied, dense and layered, with a lively spine of acidity, rich structuring tannins and a long, penetrating finish. With both the highest proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon recorded at Montrose and a rather low pH of 3.55, it will surely number among the longest lived 2024 Bordeaux.

    William Kelley - Wine Advocate

The 2024 Montrose has a little more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend due to the yields in various parcels. It was picked between September 23 and October 7 and matured in 60% new oak. The well-defined and very able nose demonstrates classicism, fine delineation and a little more florality than the Terrasse III. The palate is medium-bodied with very finely chiselled tannins and a keen line of acidity. This symmetrical Saint-Estèphe is blessed with an elegant, sapid and reassuringly precise finish that the estate seems to have honed in the last few years. It does not have the unbridled ambition of, say, the 2020 Montrose, but it is exceptionally well crafted and will become a fine Saint-Estèphe. Drink 2032-2058.

    Neal Martin - Vinous

The 2024 Montrose exudes Cabernet Sauvignon character in its aromatic savoriness and tannic structure. In fact, the 2024 has the most Cabernet Sauvignon ever. Tightly wound today, the 2024 impresses with its energy and focus. There's a bit less mid-palate and overall heft than most years, as well as a brighter fruit profile. Floral, spice and mineral overtones lend brightness throughout. The 2024 is a super-classic, nervy Montrose that will need a number of years to be at its most expressive. Aging is projected to be 18 months, with 60% new oak. Drink 2034-2064.

This shows finesse and elegance as well as plenty of subtle red currant and blackcurrant character. Medium-bodied with refinement and length. Tender, vivid and pure. Extremely well done in a difficult year. 80% cabernet sauvignon, 17% merlot and 3% cabernet franc.

The 2024 Château Montrose is on another level and clearly one of the wines of the vintage. Based on 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc, it's aging in 60% new barrels. Gorgeous notes of cassis, violets, graphite, and smoky tobacco all emerge from the glass. Medium to full-bodied, it has remarkable purity, fine yet building tannins, and a great finish. Coming in at 13% alcohol with a pH of 3.5, this estate continues to deliver First Growth quality year after year.

2020 Torbreck The Forebear Shiraz Magnum (1500ml)
    Barossa Valley, South Australia, AUSTRALIA
    $1850. 00
    Bottle
    $22200.00 Dozen
    Cellar: Drink now - 40 Years (2025-2065)
    ABV: 15.5%
    Closure: Cork

By any measure a mind blowing example of Barossa Shiraz.

The second release of this new flagship addition to the Torbreck portfolio, the Forebear is a single vineyard Shiraz that dates back to the 1850’s and pays homage to generations of Barossa vignerons. Maturation takes place in new French oak barriques for a period of 24 months.
Super dense inky black core with an equally deep dark red black hue. Wafting from the glass with extraordinary force are potent aromas of dark plum, liquorice and blackberry which are complimented by some vanillin cedar, earthy fennel, subtle dark chocolate, leather and spice notes. Exceptionally powerful and intense yet showing more refinement and freshness than the Laird, ultra rich dark plum, blackberry, liquorice, blueberry and dark chocolate flavours coat the palate with a tidal wave like energy. Extending across the back half are spicy vanillin cedar, earthy fennel, delicate mocha and pepper elements. Opulently textured and dense yet highly finessed and seamless it possesses beautifully polished, tightly structured tannins. Concludes with stratospheric length. Hold onto your hats when you drink this!
Drink over the next 10-40 years.
    Alc. 15.5%

    Other Reviews....
The 2020 The Forebear is sourced from the oldest plantings in the Hillside Vineyard in Lyndoch—12 rows planted in the early 1850s. For this tasting, the wine has been open now for three hours, and yet it needs more in the way of oxygen than what it currently has. The wine remains aromatically closed, with notions of black fruit, exotic spice, charry oak and forest floor. This has peat, old leather, jarrah and black cherries in profusion. The palate is shaped by intense graphite tannins, which feel closely knit and exclusively the property of old vines; they are silty and settle in the mouth—if you need a visual—like watching a pint of Guinness settle in the glass. A monumental wine, it needs space and quiet to be able to absorb the layers of complexity and undulating waves of flavor through the finish. 15.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and wax. Drink 2025-2040.

Complex aromas of blackberry compote, roasted coffee beans, iodine, graphite, olive tapenade, dark chocolate, blood plums and baking spices. The palate has a deep, luscious mouthfeel with firmly framed tannins that lead into a viscous and textural finish. So much concentration and old-vine character that is built for the ages. Exceptional. Made from vines planted in 1850s on one acre in Lyndoch. Drink or hold.

Domaine Armand Rousseau sets the bar for Gevrey-Chambertin and is by any measure one of the greatest domaines in Burgundy. Of course, the big two of Chambertin and Chambertin Clos des Beze get much of the attention, quality has been on the rise in each of the remaining vineyards, and there's no dead weight among their enviable selection today.

Pretty, even perfumed, aromas include those of essence of red pinot fruit, anise, earth and the barest hint of wood influence. The beautifully textured, supple and rounded middleweight flavors firm up noticeably on the youthfully austere, balanced and sneaky long finale. This is really quite stylish and should age well. The 2022 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is pretty, offering up aromas of sweet cherries, berries and plums mingled with notions of peonies and baking spices. The 2022 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru offers a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, with rose petals and light violet scents emerging in time. Very well defined and transparent. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky smooth entry. Perfectly judged acidity, harmonious, caressing towards the sweet, slightly candied finish that lingers for 30 seconds afterward. The 2022 Rousseau Charmes is silky and forward, with profuse aromas that are more cherry and pomegranate than black fruit, underscored by floral notes and a hint of spice. The texture is surprisingly fresh for the vintage, very silky, and fine. This wine is a blend of younger vines in Aux Charmes and older vines in Mazoyères, for 1.37 hectares in total. The wine is accessible even now and should be among the earliest-drinking wines in this cellar, yet it should also age well. Drink 2035-2085.

There is just enough wood present to mention framing the spicy aromas of poached plum, warm earth and an array of floral nuances, especially violet and lilac. William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2022 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has another pure bouquet not dissimilar to the Mazy-Chambertin at this stage. At the moment, however, I discern less complexity; it is a little more closed. The palate is more expressive with a svelte texture and a hint of dark chocolate tincturing the red fruit. Gentle grip, building discretely in the mouth, this finishes with real gusto. Excellent. Drink 2027-2055.

Although it is sometimes overlooked, the Clos de la Roche from Rousseau is a superb wine. Tasted with Cyrielle from barrel, it was initially a bit reduced and slightly closed, but it opens up with ripe plum and black cherry fruit on the palate underscored by a firm, earthy minerality. The texture is wonderfully dense and long. With nearly 1.5 hectares, Rousseau is the third-largest proprietor here, after Ponsot and Dujac. They have almost a hectare in Fremières and almost a half-hectare in the original Clos de la Roche. The grapes are destemmed and gently fermented before ageing in used casks. Drink 2030-2065.

Clear bright crimson. The bouquet started out similar but then developed a further burst of red fruit with maybe a touch of blood orange. A rich dark fruit behind with a more savoury character, a fine tensile strength despite its Rousseau discretion, and very good length. Drink from 2032-2040.

Moderate though hardly invisible wood and menthol notes stop just short of dominating the liqueur-like aromas of red and dark currant, plum, just turned earth and old leather wisps. There is excellent volume and richness to the equally sleek and beautifully concentrated flavors that possess evident power and a taut muscularity on the lingering, complex, youthfully austere and impeccably well-balanced finish. The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques has turned out nicely, offering up rich aromas of smoky berries, plums, cedar spice box, orange zest and grilled squab, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and supple palate that's layered and seamless. Out of barrel, Clos Saint-Jacques can be one of the domaine's more muscular wines, but this year's rendition is very charming.

The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru showed a little reduction on the nose, but there is real intensity here and great depth. Mulberry, raspberry, wild strawberry, and loamy notes come through with time. The medium-bodied palate has supple tannins and is very smooth in texture, though there is still a little new oak to be assimilated on the finish. Excellent depth and concentration overall; I need to reassess this in bottle to see if it ranks amongst legends of the past. Drink 2027-2052.

The Clos-Saint-Jacques always marks the start of the three thrilling top wines. Out of barrel a year after vintage, the wine is still a bit characterised by the wood (70% new); however, lovely, rich, ripe blackberry and pomegranate fruits shine through with abundant mineral complexity. The texture is firm and tannic but not unapproachable. This wine is among the greatest produced in the village; ideally, one would wait ten years from the vintage before opening, and it will drink for at least 50 years after that. Drink 2035-2100.

An even crimson colour. The bouquet suggests a classical Clos St-Jacques despite the storm. As is often the case, this possesses the spiciest nose in the range with its perfumed and airy array of red and blue pinot fruit, exotic tea, star anise and discreet floral nuances, all of which is trimmed in moderate wood. The big-bodied flavors possess excellent density with a texture that is perhaps even finer than that of the Chambertin while delivering equally fine persistence. As usual, the 2022 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is more flamboyant than the Chambertin, wafting from the glass with aromas of smoky dark berries, cherries, baking spices, rose petals and raw cocoa. Full-bodied, rich and enveloping, with a broad attack that segues into a deep, layered mid-palate that's framed by powdery tannins and lively acids, it concludes with a long, saline finish.

The 2022 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has an ethereal beauty on the nose that will surely be enhanced once in bottle and given sufficient bottle age. Stunning delineation despite a tiny reduction that will be addressed during its remaining élevage. The medium-bodied palate has a little more tension and energy than the Chambertin, with brilliant precision yet real concentration and finesse. Tasting the 2022 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, one cannot doubt its perfection. The super-ripe aromas of mulberry and pomegranate roll from the glass, accented with hints of smoke, spice, and earth, pervaded by a saline mineral quality. As Cyrielle describes the wine, 'She has more of everything; [while] the Chambertin is more focused.' The wine has exceptional density, firm but supple tannins, and immense length. A more restrained, and less oak-inflected, nose somewhat grudgingly offers up its array of airy red cherry, dark currant, just turned earth, the sauvage and a dazzling array of spice elements. The mouthfeel of the equally tautly muscular broad-shouldered flavors is strikingly refined thanks to the dense but exceptionally fine-grained tannins shaping the superbly persistent finish that really fans out as it sits on the palate. Aromas of sweet raspberries and cherries mingling with notions of orange zest, incense and spices in a complex bouquet introduce Rousseau's 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru, a full-bodied, deep and layered wine that's concentrated, precise and penetrating. The 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru conveys a sense of grandeur on the nose, leaning slightly more towards red than black fruit, very harmonious and complex, with pressed flower scents filtering through with aeration. It is difficult to drag your nose away from the glass. The medium-bodied palate has very finely sculpted tannins and great depth with a smoothly textured, lightly spiced finish that lingers very long in the mouth. Superb. Drink 2027-2065.

The 2022 Chambertin is a monumental wine with supremely ripe black cherry, plum, and cassis fruit loaded with spice and floral notes. There is an immense depth of flavour and a superbly dense and compact texture. As the wine sits in the glass, it seems almost infinitely complex. This tightly wound wine is not as generous as the Clos de Bèze. The truth is that the Bèze is perhaps more immediately engaging, while the Chambertin has more substance and ultimate potential. However, both wines will probably outlive anyone tasting them today since they seem set to age for a century. Drink 2035-2100.

Domaine Armand Rousseau sets the bar for Gevrey-Chambertin and is by any measure one of the greatest domaines in Burgundy. Their holdings include parcels in six of the Gevrey grand cru vineyards, along with the largest slice of premier cru Clos St-Jacques. Of course, the big two of Chambertin and Chambertin Clos des Beze get much of the attention, quality has been on the rise in each of the remaining vineyards, and there's no dead weight among their enviable selection today.

    Other Reviews....
This is without question one of the stars of the 2022 vintage. Drink through 2037+.

Aromas of sweet raspberries and cherries mingling with notions of orange zest, incense and spices in a complex bouquet introduce Rousseau's 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru, a full-bodied, deep and layered wine that's concentrated, precise and penetrating. It's one of the least evolved wines in the cellar, but it's very fine-boned for such a warm vintage.

William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru conveys a sense of grandeur on the nose, leaning slightly more towards red than black fruit, very harmonious and complex, with pressed flower scents filtering through with aeration. It is difficult to drag your nose away from the glass. The medium-bodied palate has very finely sculpted tannins and great depth with a smoothly textured, lightly spiced finish that lingers very long in the mouth. Superb. Drink 2027-2065.

    Neal Martin - Vinous

A blend of 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc, the 2024 Beau-Séjour Bécot was picked in late September. Clusters were open rather than compact, lessening botrytis pressure, making it easier to wait to attain full maturity. Offering up aromas of dark berries, violets, rose petals and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, polished and layered, with beautifully refined tannin, integrated acidity and a long, aromatic finish. Once again, this impeccably managed estate has delivered a terrific performance in challenging conditions.

The 2024 Beau-Séjour Bécot is deep, vivid and wonderfully alive. Dynamic and explosive, with striking inner perfume, Beau-Séjour Bécot is hauntingly beautiful. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, menthol, licorice and rose petal soar out of the glass. Silky, refined tannins add to the wine's finesse. The increase of Cabernet Franc in the blend has added aromatic depth and textural elegance. There's a feeling of transparency here that is impossible to miss. Beau-Séjour Bécot has grown into one of the most distinctive wines in Bordeaux. Simply put, the 2024 is magnificent. That's all there is to it. Élevage is 55% in new oak, 15% in once-used barrels and the rest in 20HL casks. Tasted two times. Drink 2034-2054.

A wine with very bright and al-dente fruit. Aromas and flavors of redcurrants and minerals with lavender and chalk. Medium to full body and a solid core of tannins integrated with the dark fruit. Toned-muscle quality to the tannins. Fresh and vibrant at the end. Pure fruit. Energy. 77% merlot and 23% cabernet franc.

The 2024 Château Beau-Séjour Bécot is 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc, aging in 55% new oak with a small part in foudre. Ripe black cherries, leafy herbs, damp earth, and crushed stone notes define the aromatics, and this beauty hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, an ultra-fine mouthfeel, gorgeous tannins, and a great finish. This is brilliant, and I'd put it up with the crème de la crème of the vintage, especially in this elegant, finesse-driven style. Tasted twice with consistent results.

Gorgeous fragrance, really quite deep and vivid, almost an opulence to the perfumed nose. Generous and filling, smooth, silky, round and so vibrant. Juicy and lifted but still with structure - this has acidity, a cool freshness, super fine silky tannins and a soft push from start to finish. Feels super classic and classy, refined and elegant with cool blue fruit and lots of saltiness, but so distinguished. You really feel the limestone in the glass. Still serious, you feel the Cabernet spiciness but you don't get the impression they struggled with ripeness at all. A great glass. Sappy, fruity, clean and salty. A true wine of place. A yield of 32hl/ha, 3.40pH. Drink 2032-2046.

The 2024 Couhins Blanc is a regal, elegant wine. Readers who want to enjoy a world-class dry white that is still affordable will delight in this gorgeous, sculpted offering from Couhins. Slate, chalk, mint and white pepper drive through a core of citrus-inflected fruit. Couhins Blanc is one of the finest dry whites of the year. Bright and racy, the 2024 Château Couhins Blanc reveals tart citrus, crushed stone, mint, and sappy green herbs. Made from mostly Sauvignon Blanc with a splash of Sauvignon Gris, it's medium-bodied, fresh, and focused, showing a more mid-weight, racy style.

One of the most impressive wines of the vintage, the 2024 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a striking effort that sets itself apart with seamless integration, even at this early stage, and a strong sense of identity. Poised, precise and unmistakably singular, it opens in the glass with a perfumed bouquet of iris, violet, dark berries, cherries, vine smoke and gentian. Medium to full-bodied, supple and notably fleshy for the vintage, it’s layered and textural, with a sappy, enveloping core of pure, vibrant fruit framed by finely grained, velvety tannins, culminating in a long, precise and gently stemmy finish. This is one of the rare wines of the vintage where sappiness is expressed with such finesse and charm, thanks in no small part to meticulous vineyard work and severe sorting in the winery. The blend is composed of 48% Cabernet Franc, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Merlot, and it's maturing in a combination of 70% new oak, 19% foudres and 11% amphorae. Drink 2026-2044.

Seamless and silky in the glass, with superb balance, the 2024 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is one of the wines of the vintage. All the elements are so well balanced, always a sign of a superior vintage at this address. Floral notes, spice, leather and mocha run through a core of layered, beautifully persistent dark red fruit. Harvest took place between September 17 and 25, during one of the rare windows with little rain. As always, Les Carmes is done with a high percentage of stems (52%), specifically 100% for the Cabernet Franc, 50% for the Merlot and 20% for the Cabernet Sauvignon. Aging is 70% new oak barrels, 19% 18HL foudre and 11% amphora. New oak is already very nicely integrated, another sign of a superb vintage. The 2024 is a brilliant effort by the team led by Technical Director Olivier Pouthier. Drink 2034-2054.

This is always an idiosyncratic wine. This year it’s stunning, with a unique floral aspect and excellent depth of pure blue fruit, mulberries, dried herbs and white pepper. So juicy and mouthwatering on the palate, with a medium to full body and fine tannins. There is a crystalized mouthfeel, but the tannins are fresh and well knit. This is already delicious, which indicates its superb balance. 48% cabernet franc, 29% cabernet sauvignon and 23% merlot.

The 2024 Château Carmes Haut-Brion comes from 7.8 hectares of vines in the heart of Pessac and is 48% Cabernet Franc, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance 23% Merlot that was vinified with 52% whole clusters and will spend two years in 70% new barrels as well as smaller portions in vats and amphora. It's one of the darker-hued wines in the vintage and has a terrific nose of ripe black fruits, smoky earth, violets, crushed stone, and hints of lead pencil. It's medium to full-bodied, has ultra-fine tannins, a layered, seamless mouthfeel, and a great finish. I think it's clearly one of the top wines in the vintage.

Medium to full bodied with a rich, plush and spicy palate.

Aged in a 50/50 mix of seasoned French and American oak barrels for a period of 14 months. Pitch black heart with a dark red black tinged hue. Spicy dark plum and liquorice aromas evolve from the glass followed by some meaty graphite like notes and peppered earth scents. Rich, plush and spicy, the medium to full bodied palate is decorated with fleshy dark plum and liquorice fruits. Spicy vanillin cedar, subtle scorched earth and peppered fennel accents lie beneath. Opulent mouth feel and velvet like tannins finishing long, lush and spicy.

Whole berries are fermented here before a maturation period of fourteen months in an evenly divided mix of French and American oak. The colour here is a deep magenta, while the nose exhibits notes of warm, dusty roads, black cherries, bay leaves, ripe plums and dark chocolate. This is a silky, finely rendered Shiraz, with a supple texture and very good length. The palate sees those bright, black cherries really come to the fore while there is a fine line of acidity running the length. This wine is an eight to ten year proposition, over which time it will surely improve further. Drink 2024-2034.

2010 A.D. Rattray Cask Collection Craigellachie 14 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $159. 99
    Bottle
    $1919.88 Dozen
    ABV: 57.1%

Around 14 years old seems to be a good age for Craigellachie, a fact confirmed by the official release 13 year old which remains the distillery's leading line. Long fermentations are responsible for a fragrant, fruity aspect in the distillate, giving it a tropical and slightly floral edge that's most noticeable in mature examples. In this 14 year old from Rattray, tradition and heritage meet experimentation and modernity via an “old-style” spirit drawn from an x Bourbon barrel acquired back in 2010. It's been given an extra layer of complexity through finishing in a first-fill Burgundy red wine cask. Matching casks with secondary woods is a continual learning process. Here the bottlers say the spirit has gained appreciable notes of Pinot Noir, complementing Craigellachie's characteristically full-bodied base. Cask No.18 yielded 296 bottles at 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... Colour: Nectarine gold. Nose: Fresh iris, blackcurrant jam and apricot toasted oat crumble. Palate: Charred peach, dried cranberry and rose petal jelly. Finish: Spiced berry compote with a sprinkling of toasted pine nut.

Kilchoman Sauternes Cask Matured 2024 Release Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $189. 99
    Bottle
    $2279.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

After a six year absence, Kilchoman's Sauternes matured expression is back, this time boasting a full-term maturation instead of a five month finish. Founder, Anthony Wills selected a combination of fresh and refill Sauternes barriques (22% vs 78%) from two separate years, the youngest being 2018. The result is not too dissimilar to the last version, with flashes of dried apricots and peaches detectable through the savoury, earthy peat reek. A bit of a sweetie at mid palate where the oils thicken until typical Kilchoman peat overtakes, ash and pepper in tow, with an unexpectedly, dry chewy finish that shows some wet stone minerality. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... The nose thrills with gooseberry, honeysuckle, kiwi, linseed oil, passion fruit, lemon sorbet sprinkled with sea salt, and the caramelized meringue peaks of a baked Alaska. It has a slightly waxy mouthfeel with lush summer fruits from the sauternes cask showing Golden Delicious apple, banana, apricot, star fruit, and honey, with a late arrival of peat smoke. Water polishes the fruit notes but unleashes more smoke. 93 points - whiskyadvocate.com

    $120. 00
    Bottle
    $1440.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

Domaine Tempier is Bandol’s most well known estate and has been run by the Peyraud family since 1936. Their classic red cuvée is a blend of complex terroirs, mixing the variety of clay-limestone soil located around the Estate, but also those in La Cadière, Sainte Anne d’Evenos, and Ollioules. The varietal composition here is predominately from Mourvedre with some Grenache, Cinsault, and Carignan also included.

From the 2020 vintage the family has decided to rename their classic red cuvée: "Lulu & Lucien" to honour Mrs Lucie 'Lulu' Peyraud, passed away soon after the 2020 harvest at the age of 103. She joined her husband Lucien in what the family calls ‘Winemakers’ Paradise.’

    Other Reviews....
Shows a seductive prettiness, with violet and spice box notes layered with crunchy red plum and graphite shavings, plus flickers of Mourvèdre meatiness. Oak sits nicely in the backdrop, while salty, savory acidity buoys this along and brings freshness to the finish, which is marked by silky, polished tannins. Drink now through 2032.

    Cellar: Drink now - 15 Years (2025-2040)

A classic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz first produced in 1962, Yalumba’s Signature pays homage each vintage to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the culture and traditions of Yalumba. The 2022 vintage’s signatory is Yalumba’s Executive Director of Sales for Australia & New Zealand, Paul Midolo. This year’s release marks the 51st vintage of Yalumba The Signature.
From vines with an average age of 49 years the 2021 Signature is a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Shiraz with maturation taking place in a combination of French barriques and Hungarian hogsheads (21% of which was new oak) for a period of 18 months.

Deep and powerful yet finessed, this is Yalumba Signature at it’s finest.

Inky black heart with a deep dark purple black tinged hue. Unfurling from the glass in what is a wonderful show of both refinement and intensity is a mix of red to black currant, liquorice and mulberry scents trailed by some vanillin cedar, tobacco, earth and faint bay leaf notes. Rich red plum, red to black currant, liquorice and mulberry fruits flow eloquently across the medium to full bodied palate. Piquing further interest and complexity are spicy vanillin cedar, subtle tobacco, earthy dark chocolate and bay leaf accents. Deep and powerful yet finessed it has a sturdy fine grained tannin structure that bodes well for longer term cellaring. Finishes very long, sophisticated and elegant.
Drink over the next 10-15 years.
    Alc. 14.5%

    Other Reviews....
Yalumba's famous Signature cabernet sauvignon and shiraz blend has a strong pedigree when it comes to cellaring and the 2022 release will certainly carry on long into the future. The fruit density and purity here are impressive. Blackberry, doris plum and black cherry tones, their flow elegant and graceful across the palate with hints of spice, cedar, tobacco, pencil shavings, roasting meats, dried herbs and olive tapenade. Fine-grained tannins are in abundance and there is an extended finish that rolls on and on. It's a super release. Drink by 2054.

The 2022 The Signature Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz is so pretty—floral, red fruited and fine. This is a beautiful iteration of this wine. Ironically, there's a coastal freshness about it—kelp, brine, crushed shells—given it is nowhere near the coast. It's capacious and mineral and so fresh. The tannins are fine and neat, and the wine has incredible focus and line through the long finish. It's very impressive, potentially one of my favorite releases of this wine to date. It has wholly Barossa fruit this vintage. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2025-2052.

Isle of Raasay Dun Cana Sherry Quarter Cask Second Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $199. 99
    Bottle
    $2399.88 Dozen
    ABV: 52%

Isle of Raasay's second annual Dun Cana release departs from their signature malt, exploring different cask types. For the second edition, peated and unpeated spirit is matured separately in ex-American rye casks, which previously held Woodford Reserve, before a secondary six-month maturation in Pedro Ximénez and oloroso sherry quarter casks. The distillery says the use of the smaller 125-litre casks “accelerates the maturation process” to deepen the resulting flavours of pepper spice, sultanas, vanilla toffee and salty chocolate. The whisky is named for Dùn Cana, the highest point on Raasay, as a tribute to the landscape of the distillery’s home. 52% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Nose: Initially vanilla, followed by a few nutty aromas, including almonds, hazelnut praline, and pecan pie. Spice, ginger, and cardamom. Palate: Complex, like the nose. A few more fruit-forward notes here, like plums, berries, and peach. Almonds. Bakewell tart. Gingerbread. Finish: Long, as expected, given it is more than 50% ABV. A lingering fruitiness, which works well. Comment: Commendable in its complexity, especially with the way it merges a spicy nuttiness with a softer fruit combination. Cape Byron Mac Liqueur Cask Single Malt Australian Whisky (700ml)
    New South Wales, AUSTRALIA
    $149. 99
    Bottle
    $1799.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45%

Many distillers have explored secondary maturations with casks that have previously held sweet sherry and fortified wines, but not much has been done with liqueurs - let alone nut liqueurs. Now, Cape Byron Distillery is the first in the world to make a Macadamia Liqueur Cask matured Whisky, launching in 2025 with a limited release of 550 bottles. The new experiment is their most broad appeal offering to date. It almost smells like a whisky liqueur as heather honey, light peach, cantaloupe and vanilla greet the nose, matched by one of the softest deliveries ever from this distillery. Some of Cape Byron’s juicy tropical fruit character is retained, leaning towards dried banana or mango. The sweetness detracts a little from the vibrancy, making approachability rather than complexity a strong point. Regardless, if you're after a malt with a soft texture and a sweeter edge, you should find this more than satisfactory. 45% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Notes from the producers... The liqueur has imparted decadent notes of butterscotch, coffee and dark chocolate to season ex-bourbon casks ready for maturing this malt whisky within the subtropical rainforest.

(raised in French oak barrels, 20 percent of them new) Bright purple. Vibrant, expansive aromas of dark berries, floral pastilles, pipe tobacco and smoky minerals. Broad, alluringly sweet and seamless in texture, offering intense black raspberry, cherry cola and bitter chocolate flavors and a suave candied rose flourish. Shows a compelling interplay of power and finesse and no rough edges. Gains spiciness with air and finishes youthfully tannic and extremely long, featuring resonating floral and tobacco notes. Drink 2022 - 2031.

    $230. 00
    Bottle
    $2760.00 Dozen
    ABV: 57.8%

One of the oldest Ballechins to date. Because of its age, the peat will probably be better integrated and less aggressive than younger bottlings - or it may not! The marriage of bourbon and sherry cask matured whiskies aims at balancing out the coastal peat with oak spice, dark fruits and chocolate. In short, a mature peated whisky at cask strength for a price that shouldn't scare you away. Arrives at a hearty ABV of 57.8%. Non-chill filtered.

"While sherry influenced Ballechin (sometimes quite extreme) seems to be more common, this bourbon version is really good as well." - whiskynotes.be

New as of 2024. Who wouldn't love the chance to try young vs old in a cross-tasting? Now you can. Even better, there's no sherry or exotic wood finishings, just first-fill Kentucky barrels (apparently used for Old Grand Dad Bourbon). They provide the perfect insight into how this very peaty distillate unfolds with age. At a direct import price, the opportunity is more accessible than ever. 2016 bottles produced. 52.8% Alc./Vol Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Nose: sooty peat, although not as in-your-face as expected. Immediately countered by a big sweetness. Big vanilla, with light caramel and underlying layers of quinces, lemons and apples. Then a nice earthiness, a little lovage and burnt Mediterranean herbs. Subtle metallic notes, with whiffs of menthol and camphor. A nice all-rounder. Mouth: the smoke is bigger now, reminding me of Port Charlotte’s sooty and lightly farmy style. Dry leafy notes, more burnt herbs, a little ink and hints of black tea. Then caramel sweetness with a salty edge, some lemon oil and vanilla. Black peppercorns and light tarry notes as well, with some fresh oak in the distance. Finish: very long, grassier and spicier. Smoky notes, hints of grapefruits and rapeseed oil. While sherry influenced Ballechin (sometimes quite extreme) seems to be more common, this bourbon version is really good as well. Overall a nice combination of robust peat, coupled to a well-dosed sweetness. - whiskynotes.be
