2022 Bleasdale Frank Potts Cabernet BlendLanghorne Creek, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$29. 99Bottle$359.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2025-2033)ABV: 13.5%Closure: StelvinMid weighted with ample richness, a sturdy structure and elegant conclusion.
The founder, the highly inventive, industrious and resourceful Frank Potts (1815 - 1890), to whom this wine is dedicated, was a 19th century genius, and a pioneer who has been described as being “made of the right stuff and well worthy of the grand old land that gave him birth.” He arrived in Australia as a 21 year old, having set sail from Plymouth England, and landing late in 1836. By the 1860’s, he had planted the original 30 acres of vineyard on the banks of the Bremmer Creek. Potts was highly admired - “One meets with extraordinary characters through life, but I doubt whether his equal could be found. In appearance a stranger would take him to be a poor labourer, with a thin, spare figure and long unkempt hair and invariably wearing his shirt sleeves tucked up. Although a most uncouth-looking person, and yet this man is a perfect genius! There is not a single thing mechanical or otherwise undertaken by him which he does not succeed in...” So remarked Inspector Tolmer, who was later to become Commissioner of Police, South Australia. Frank was one of the first to recognise the benefits of red gum. After building several houses for himself, he made tools and a bullock dray to cut down and haul these massive timbers in order to construct a gigantic twin wine press and several enormous wine vats. He also created the irrigation system that's still in place today. What little spare time he might have had was spent building a piano and various race winning yachts!
A blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Malbec, 6% Petit Verdot and 4% Merlot with maturation taking place in French oak puncheons and hogsheads (25% new) for a period of 12 months. Pitch black heart with a dark red black tinged hue. Pronounced red currant, red liquorice and red plum aromas intermix with hints of mulberry, dusty vanillin cedar, subtle tobacco and bay leaf. Flowing across the mid weighted palate with ample richness are red currant, red liquorice and mulberry fruits complimented by dusty earth, vanillin cedar, spicy tobacco and infusions of bay leaf. Slightly chalky, fine grained tannins lend a sturdy structure. Long elegant conclusion.

Cabernet sauvignon (72%), malbec (18%), petit verdot (6%) and merlot (4%), aged for 12 months in French oak, 25% new. Salt and pepper, blueberry and blackcurrant, cloves and minerally/ferrous characters. This is a seriously good wine. It's characterful, balanced, lengthy and interesting, its dark-berried fruit flavours sunk deep into the palate, its freshness maintained, and its finish as convincing as everything that came before. If someone said to me, pick a Henschke wine to drink tonight, any wine. Well, one would be a blithering idiot not to opt for Hill of Grace, but I would not be at all unhappy if this was the choice. It is, year after year, always a favourite among some exceptional wines. 100% Shiraz from 70-year-old vines, 68% Eden Valley and 32% Barossa. Maturation was for twenty months in French oak hogsheads, 10% new. From a top vintage, this will surely rank among the very best Tappa Pass that the Henschkes have released – and that is saying something! A vibrant maroon hue, the nose suggests a complete wine, utterly harmonious. There is focus, a seductive and seamless structure, an alluring and beguiling texture, impeccable balance and immense length. At the conclusion, there are silky tannins, though they seem to almost disappear on contact. Notes of cassis emerge on the palate. A wine with real persistence, this has twenty years ahead of it, if needed. Stunning. Drink 2025-2045.

Ken Gargett – WinePilot.comThe brilliant burst of colour is the first indication that this is something special. The nose doesn’t disappoint. Highly perfumed with floral plum and cherry notes and a little light chocolate. Graceful lines on the palate, which is expressive and powerful, though the influence of Eden Valley adds a lightness of touch. Only 10% new French oak and the rest seasoned, but that little oak influence brings a delightful lift to the palate. Outstanding wine.

Ripe satsuma plum, black cherry and blackberry fruits with hints of black olive tapenade, bay leaf, five-spice, cedar, vanilla pod, licorice, dark chocolate, earth and pan juices. I'm really liking the fruit density and velvety palate travel of the '22s; there is a real generosity to the fruit. Tight, powdered schisty tannins and a bright seam of acidity with excellent persistence on the finish. Drink by 2038.

A fragrant and pure riesling sourced from a single vineyard in Flaxman Valley, high up in the Eden Valley. Pale with a flash of green and aromas of Bickford's lime cordial, freshly squeezed lime and grapefruit with hints of Christmas lily, lime sorbet, crushed quartz, lemongrass, grapefruit zest and frangipani. Dave Brookes – James Halliday’s Australian Wine CompanionA classic Eden Valley Riesling, from a great year, and in particular, the Flaxman Valley sub-region. A very pale lemon hue, this is a brilliant follow-up to the initial release last year – at least as good, probably better. This in your cellar for the next decade or two will make you think you are wise indeed. And you would be correct. Wonderful aromatics, with notes of florals, lemon curd, limes and a supporting line of sea breeze acidity. The wine has balance, intensity and finesse. A wonderful Riesling, with serious length and a fifteen years plus ahead of it. A star, and there is room here for this to elevate its score in the coming years. Drink 2025-2040+

West Aussie Pinot has grown from a curiosity to a serious example of this great grape, which offers value, flavour and great drinkability. Denmark has established itself at the forefront of this movement. A garnet/pale crimson hue, this is quite a savoury style of Pinot and a most welcome one. We have notes of leather, undergrowth, mushrooms, red cherries and a touch of nutmeg oak. On the palate, we move more to the red cherry end of the spectrum. 2020 Soldera Case Basse Toscana Sangiovese IGTTuscany, ITALY$1499. 00Bottle$17988.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: CorkThe 2020 vintage of Soldera marks the second release overseen entirely by the Soldera family since the passing of Gianfranco Soldera, and it continues the estate’s unwavering commitment to purity, biodiversity, and meticulous detail. Sourced from the iconic Case Basse estate, ten hectares of southwest-facing Sangiovese in the heart of Montalcino, the wine reflects both the singular character of the site and the estate’s distinctive, non-interventionist approach. Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, long maceration in Slavonian oak, and nearly four years of aging in large botti are all part of what gives Soldera its signature depth, energy, and transparency. No longer labeled Brunello, but every bit the benchmark.
Other Reviews....
Tasted over lunch, the Soldera Case Basse 2020 100% Sangiovese shows a softly textured profile with beautifully polymerized tannins that create a taut sounding board for notes of cassis, small berry fruit, violets and crushed stone. Made with spontaneous fermentation in oversized vats and aged carefully in the family cellars in surrounding quiet and darkness, this soulful wine remains true to the spirit of Sangiovese, defined by clarity and finesse. The 2020 vintage has an accessible, open-knit character that suits it well and clearly distinguishes it from the more austere 2019 and the super precise 2021. In this context, 2020 offers a softer, more delicate interlude between the two. Drink 2029-2055.

Monica Larner - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe most vivid crushed cherry gives way to rose pastille, sweet lavender and nuances of clove and exotic spice as the exuberant 2020 Toscana Sangiovese comes to life in the glass. It displays pure class on the palate. It’s silken and soothingly round with a pretty mix of ripe strawberry and blueberry that swirl throughout, as crisp mineral tones and a contrasting tinge of sour citrus add unparalleled depth. Incredibly complex yet juicy and spry, the 2020 leaves crunchy tannins that firm up the impossibly long finish without slowing its momentum. I don’t recall ever tasting a young Soldera that showed this much energy and verve. It’s already so pleasurable yet has the balance to mature beautifully over the coming decades. Drink 2027-2044.

Eric Guido - VinousTasted from a 65-hectoliter cask, the 2020 Sangiovese is plush and fruity at this stage, although it’s starting to reveal its mineral underpinnings, with dark blackberry notes, graphite, and violets. Medium to full-bodied, it offers a velvety texture, with ripe and refined tannins, a good deal of meaty richness through the mid-palate, and a seamless structure. There’s both purity and refinement across each of the samples tasted. The 2020 showed a good deal of completeness already prior to bottling and I expect it will have a good deal of cellaring potential.

The 2022 Cornas Les Chaillots from Thierry Allemand was crafted by his son Théo using the same method as his father: 100% whole bunches, two to three days of carbon maceration and punching down instead of pumping over. Evoking a pure, delicate and gourmand bouquet of violet, mulberries and dark berries, it's medium to full-bodied, dense and firm with a crystalline, pure texture and an energetic, tense mid-palate framed by somewhat stringy tannins, typical of whole bunches. Concluding with a long, ethereal and floral finish, this is a superb wine. Drink 2026-2040.

Yohan Castaing - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateIt's hard to wrap your head around how a red wine can have this enormous concentration and giant structure, yet be so refined and silky. Then comes the breathtaking finish that is as graceful as a great dancer who leaps effortlessly from one side of the stage to the other. Clare Valley Riesling, here from the Watervale sub-region, is one of the great gems of the Aussie wine treasure chest. For me, while the Flaxman’s might have been lineball with last year’s release, this is surely a step-up. A must for the cellar. Pale gleaming lemon in colour, the nose offers us exquisite floral notes and citrus, especially grapefruit. Fragrant and elegant, we have spices, limes and hints of river stones. Such balance! A majestic Riesling. There is a riot of flavour and yet an arcade of elegance. We have a line of oyster shell acidity, while the wine really does have impeccable balance (worth mentioning twice) and superb length. A Riesling which will drink beautifully, ageing gracefully, over the next fifteen to twenty years. Love it. Given Chris Hatcher’s decades of experience in the Aussie wine industry and his contacts, I guess it is no surprise. Drink 2025-2045.

Other reviews... So still pre-reopening juice (so Invergordon-Jim Beam Brands). Utterly love the blurb on the 'label' (well, the stencil), no stoopid AI could have ever written that true piece of post-modern literature. Colour: amber. Nose: it's on quince jelly, juicy sultanas, pinecones, a little talc, fond de taint, pollens, pink pepper and oregano, caraway, something syrah-y, pizza oil (I know that's not very romantic), tomato sauce, sage… An unusual construction that rather loses you, but it's full of (unlikely) charms. Mouth: I find this arrival weirdly spicy and woody. A lot of wood spices (oak, pine, fir), heavy spices, cumin and clove, lees, stalk… I know it's me but this is not my kind of concoction, not on the palate, even if brighter notes of oranges would then try to balance it all. Weird drink. Finish: long, bitter, sour and leafy. Almost some artisanal Italian bitter. Comments: I've always had troubles with the Black Arts. In the first place, I've never quite understood the idea behind them, but knowing that it's a highly successful line, I'll simply tip my hat to them and bow modestly before this modern art of doing bizarre mixtures. 84 points - whiskyfun.com

The red rooster is a very special bird in Mexico - a sign of the sun, and a key part of the national identity. The brand of tequila that bears its name selects piñas aged 6-7 years. Only fruit with a residual sugar content of 24-27% is chosen. These piñas are then halved to preserve their sweetness and twice distilled in stainless steel pot stills. This ensures that the exceptional agave flavours and aromas are preserved. Their Blanco is said to taste softer and smoother than other examples because of a unique filtration process during which pure water is filtered through Mexican silver. The flavour is initially sweet with a subtle yet distinct peppery spice. 38% Alc./Vol.

Grand Marnier Triple Sec Liqueur (500ml)Cognac, FRANCE$59. 99Bottle$719.88 DozenABV: 40%Made with oranges and Cognac, Grand Marnier is a liqueur immortal and one of the world's best known curacaos. Aged in the cellars of Chateau de Bourg in Cognac and blended with fruit from the French West Indies, the company's entry level bottling has become a bar standard, combining the tantalizing fragrance of Seville oranges with the warm, intoxicating rush of extra-aged cognac in a 49/51 blend. Offering superb purity and definition with notes of mixed peel, orange cake and vanilla and a concentrate of citrus peel and mandarin flavours, what's also admirable about this timeless liqueur is its expert balance; the lively spirit backbone and the finish that winds up fresh, mildly tart and vibrant with lingering honeyed-citrus flavours.
If you want an even more indulgent experience, three super premium releases set the bar higher, introducing increasing proportions of (primarily) Grande Champagne Cognacs, sometimes boasting incredible age, adding further depth and complexity to an already remarkable liqueur. Whichever you choose, these expressions are best appreciated neat, on the rocks or in a snifter glass at room temperature. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... The aroma is a sweet/sour, tangerine/Mandarin orange perfume that never stops enchanting. At the palate entry the orange zest’s acidity mingles gracefully with the Cognac’s alcohol, making for delicious drinking. Satiny finish. 90-95 - wineenthusiast.com

1/3 Irish cream liqueur

1 shot of Cherry Brandy Liqueur (e.g. Cherry Heering)
1 shot of Grand Marnier

Method: Pour the cherry brandy and the orange liqueur into a highball. Stir well, then fill a highball glass with ice cubes and pour the cocktail directly over them . There is no need to use a strainer in this instance. Top up with the chilled lemonade to taste, then serve. -

Launched in 2023, this is Macallan's celebration of the art of maturation, where the whisky's rich amber hue hints at the intricate dance between the spirit and the oak. Intended solely as a travel retail exclusive. 43% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Ex-seasoned sherry oak, not sure if it was full-maturation or some 'enhancement', not sure that even matters (good mood mode activated here). Colour: dark gold. Nose: once again, it is rather 'old-school Macallan' while we're no longer too worried that the palate might be too light and too unbalanced by the wood since this baby has been bottled at 43% ABV. The difference is enormous between 40 and 43, we all know that. We find the usual dried and fresh figs, the apricots, some dried pears (slices), some high-end apple compote, various raisins, plum pudding, treacle toffee, kumquats and bergamots, some Demerara sugar, caramel and fudge… Nutshell: all is well. Mouth: there's much more happening in this one, the oak doesn't quite get in the way and the fruits in all their forms have plenty of room to express themselves. Kumquats, raisins, tangerines, figs, jujubes, apples, then honey, maple syrup and chocolate, the latter becoming then a little bitter and drying, which comes from the oak I would suppose. No big deal, it's an excellent one. Also a little meatiness ala M**** (another 'M', a.k.a. the beast of Dufftown). Finish: still a little short and dry, but these peppered Seville oranges and these cloves do really work. Hints of honeysuckle. Comments: around 500-600€, apparently. No comments, except that to be honest, we would have preferred it to be a bit stronger, but it's still very good. 87 points - whiskyfun.com
...The nose opens with noble lacquered wood, lots of milk chocolate, carefully complemented by red berries and sour fruits. The signature sulfur content of The Macallan alcohols is felt. A little later, crusts of gray bread appear and the fruit palette is somewhat transformed: pineapples, dried bananas, peaches and orange peels become audible. The taste is similar to the nose in terms of wood, chocolate and sulfur, but there are more sherry tones here in the form of almonds, dried fruits, raisins, red grapes. Also present are floral honey and blood oranges. The finish is long, woody and chocolatey, with nuts and dried fruits. - whiskybase.com

2024 Felton Road Bannockburn Pinot NoirCentral Otago, NEW ZEALAND$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenABV: 13.8%Closure: StelvinFelton Road's vineyards are managed using organic and biodynamic viticulture, ensuring the highest quality fruit arrives at the winery. From there winemaking is intentionally hands off with gravity flow, wild yeasts, wild malo, and an avoidance of fining and filtration to help preserve the expression of its terroir. Felton Road farms four properties totalling 32 ha in the Bannockburn sub-region of Central Otago. The fruit for this wine is a blend of four vineyards; Cornish Point, Calvert, MacMuir and The Elms.
The 2024 Bannockburn Pinot Noir reflects a dry, steady growing season with cool March nights preserving freshness and precision. Inkwell make zinfandel and primitivo. Same, same, essentially. But the different blocks perform differently, so the nomenclature reflects that. This is genuinely reminiscent of Puglian primitivo, resplendent with dried fruits, currants, fig and date, blackberry, and hit heavily with spices, in an amaro and panforte register, anise to the fore, and underwritten by a dry, tarry earthiness. It’s opulent, in its way, but intensely savoury, too. Much more Puglia than California. And, of course, intrinsically McLaren Vale. Compelling. Drink by 2029.

2023 Farrside by Farr Pinot NoirGeelong, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$110. 00Bottle$1320.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: CorkPlanted in 2001 on a northeast-facing slope of dark volcanic soils over limestone, the Farrside vineyard produces a more structured and brooding style of Pinot Noir compared to its Sangreal counterpart. Hand-picked and wild-fermented, the fruit sees partial whole bunch inclusion before maturing in 50–60% new Allier oak.
The cooler conditions of 2023 delayed harvest by 10–12 days, adding freshness and poise to the wine’s muscular frame. Complex, savoury, and finely structured, Farrside balances intensity with elegance, delivering a wine of depth and longevity that will evolve beautifully in the cellar.

A superb release; svelte, complex, polished and effortless at once. It presents a wild array but it’s so seamless that it’s hard to tell where one nuance ends and another takes up. Nuts, peppers, strawberries and cherries, leaf matter and woodsmoke. It feels like Spring and Autumn in one. Tannin brings spice, mineral, fruit and flowers; the aftertaste remains juicy as it delivers savoury, earthen extras. It’s the detail in the satin that makes this wine feel so exquisite. Campbell Mattinson - The Wine FrontThe evolution of this site and wine is complexing, gone are the days of words being used like bold, brash and muscular. Now two decades of releasing the wine, the description is fine, vibrate and ethereal. This wine has a retained nose for the moment, but the mouthfeel is almost jubilant in comparison. Even against the Sangreal, this feels plush and luxurious. A soft creamy and varietal ripeness, all swirling around to deliver lots of pleasure. It’s texturally generous and provides a nice counterpoint to the tight, edgy flavours of spice and pepper that is Farrside.

2023 Shiraz By FarrGeelong, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$110. 00Bottle$1320.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: Diam CorkPlanted in 1994, the original By Farr vineyard is the source of this Shiraz. Set on a north-facing slope with red volcanic soil over limestone and deep sandstone, it delivers fruit of concentration and poise. All grapes are hand-picked from VSP trellising, with a portion of whole bunches included to bring added spice and structure. In most vintages, 2–4% Viognier is co-fermented, depending on timing, adding aromatic lift and a subtle textural edge.
The 2023 was naturally fermented, spending 19 days on skins before pressing. Maturation followed in French oak for 18 months, 20% new, before bottling under vacuum. This careful process highlights the distinctive character of the vineyard and the meticulous attention to detail that defines the By Farr estate.

Campbell Mattinson - The Wine FrontThis is sensational. It’s everything that amazing Shiraz tastes like. I say that from a non “big Aussie” Shiraz viewpoint. How a wine from the Moorabool Valley tastes like something from the Northern Rhone escapes me. Salty, peppery, black olives, floral notes and barrel spice. It has a coolness to it, accentuated by the acid that makes you finish one sip and immediately go for another one. It’s hard not to be gluttonous when a wine tastes this good. It is a breathtaking example of cool climate Shiraz and words cannot express the delight that it delivers. I’m so happy drinking this wine.

2024 Viognier By FarrGeelong, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$110. 00Bottle$1320.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: Diam CorkFruit is sourced from the original 1994 house block (friable red soil over limestone and sandstone) and a younger planting on red ironstone. Viognier is notoriously demanding in the vineyard, prone to horizontal growth, sunburn, and requiring ample water, so in recent years the fruit has been picked earlier to preserve natural acidity and finesse.
In the winery, grapes are foot-stomped and left on skins for several hours before pressing. Juice is transferred with all solids to barrel for natural fermentation, with gentle stirring in late autumn to initiate malolactic. The wine spends 11 months in barrel before racking, fining, filtration, and bottling.
