2020 Sadie Family Swartland Palladius Magnum (1500ml)
    Swartland, SOUTH AFRICA
    $520. 00
    Bottle
    $6240.00 Dozen
    ABV: 14%
    Closure: Cork

The Sadie Family team work with roughly 30-hectares of vines, one-third of which are estate, with the other vines farmed entirely under their control. This is a considerable undertaking when you consider, at their furthest point, the vineyards lie some 250 miles apart and are spread across 53 separate parcels. Then consider that everything is dry grown and organically farmed and that each parcel, having different geologies, aspects and often grape varieties, will require different management. These vines lie mostly on the high altitude slopes of Swartland’s Atlantic-influenced mountains, one hour north of Cape Town on the Western Cape.
Sadie’s signature white is a blend of all 11 of Swartland’s official white varieties, with old, bush-vine Chenin Blanc playing the principal role. The idea is to produce a great white that represents the overall terroir of Swartland (as much as this is possible) and to use all the permitted varieties. As a result, this is harvested from 17 separate vineyard sites, with the full list of grapes taking in Grenache Blanc, Clairette Blanche, Viognier, Verdelho, Roussanne, Marsanne, Semillon Blanc, Palomino and Colombard, as well as the hyper-rare Semillon Gris (which plays a key role in Sadie’s Kokerboom and ‘T Voetpad old vine cuvées).
As for the winemaking, the fruit was sorted and pressed in a traditional basket, directly into clay amphoras and six concrete eggs. The wine finished fermenting in its own time (which can take up to 20 months) after which it went to large wooden foudre for maturation before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

    Other Reviews....
No fewer than 17 parcels and 11 varieties (for now) contribute to the blend of this impressive white. Palomino, Chenin Blanc and Grenache Blanc are the dominant grapes in a wine that nods towards the southern Rhône and Spain. Less exotic than it was, Palladius is tauter and more focused these days, with freshness and zip form Clairette Blanche, Colombard and Verdelho, citrus, pear, lemongrass and aromatic herb notes and a tangy, wet stone finish. Drink: 2023-2030.

Produced from younger vines (10-15 years old) ageing takes place in Slavonian oak casks and concrete vats for a period of 12 months.
Dark red core with black shaded edges and a red to dark red hue. Aromas of red cherry and red currant are trailed by some dusty earth, tobacco and spicy dried herb notes. The 2020 Rosso Di Montalcino Ciampoleto pours a medium ruby hue, with pure, ripe fruit aromas of pressed red flowers, ripe raspberry, and sweet herbs. Described by Vinous Media wine critic Ian D'Agata as the 'DRC of Moscato d'Asti', this is a captivating example of Moscato. Pours with a gentle effervescent spritz flowing through a water coloured base that has pale green tinged edges. Freshly squeezed grape juice, peach, mango, orange blossom and subtle musk notes burst of the glass with great energy. Sweet juicy grape, mango and pineapple fruits have a zingy fruit tingle like feel across the light yet intensely flavoured palate. Infusions of orange blossom linger on the finish with refreshing acidity electrifying the long sweet, fruity aftertaste.

“Aww, nectar”, quips GW. We’re drinking this in the sun with our shirts off in our y-fronts and foil reflectors under our chins with cucumber rounds on our eyes. How moscato should be drunk.
It’s brilliant drinking, peachy iced tea, a little loose, wild honey character, some preserved lemon, a lick of chalky minerality too in a light pucker somewhere in there. Refreshing, clean, quite concentrated and with very light frizz of tickly bubbles barely there. A vibrant, expressive and true-to-style rendition. “Needs some ice”, GW says as he rolls over to sun his bum. Perfect. Drink 2023-2025.

Scapa Glansa Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Orkney Islands, SCOTLAND
    $109. 99
    Bottle
    $1319.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

'Glansa' which is Old Norse for "shining storm-laden skies" is a gently smoky Scapa initially aged in first-fill American oak casks, then finished in casks that previously contained peaty whisky. Compared to the unpeated Skiren, you get more of a saline / ocean breeziness to the nose; the peat is earthy but slight, the barley defined by orchard fruits; It's also fuller and spicier than its sibling, the peat adding an extra layer, weaving its way through the honeyed malt, followed by hints of sweet tea biscuits and baked fruits through the sprightly, tangy finish. This presents a dainty, airy kind of smoke, akin to Ardmore, or Scapa's famous neighbour - a good thing, as the distillate's finer points could easily be smothered. This has been sensitively handled. The result is a delicious 'aperitif' island style, possibly unique to Orkney. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews… A delightful whisky which could be raised several notches in quality if the influence of the caramel is diminished. 91 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2022

...Madeira notes on the nose, with vanilla, honey, and pears. Richly fruity on the palate, with cocoa powder, vanilla, caramel, and mild wood smoke. Dark berries emerge from the background. The dark fruits continue through the lengthy finish, where smokiness increases. 87 points

[+/- 2021 bottling]...With an NAS at 40% vol., we don't speak much. It seems that this is finished in ex-peaty-malt casks, which is just in-cask blending in our book. They should call these (many do that these days) blended malts, no? Colour: gold. Nose: there, naturally, this rather works, with a feeling of Ardmore and some rather lovely whiffs of meadow flowers and lighter compost. I'm even finding notes of fino sherry (that mineral smoke) and fermented plums. Oh and bandages and ointments in the background. Mouth: a blended malt, rather on smoked coffee, with some cigar ashes and, once again, a rather smoky kind of sherry. We're extremely far from Scapa's light honeyed floralness, but indeed it's a fine drop. Good blended malt. Finish: I'm also finding a little mustard in this fine blended malt. More fino, that's great. Comments: congrats to the blenders, very fine piece of work. At 46% vol., this well-crafted in-cask blended malt would be a killer. And then, again, who am I. 84 points - whiskyfun.com

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is cut from the same cloth, with plenty of richness and depth, yet it stays slightly more focused and tight on the palate, with medium to full-bodied richness as well as beautiful darker currant, cassis, darker chocolate, graphite, and hints of flowers. The Seabrook family have a long history in the Australian wine industry, dating back to 1878 when William Seabrook established one of Australia’s earliest wine merchants, W.J. Seabrook & Son. Today, fifth generation member Hamish Seabrook carries on the tradition. After graduating from Adelaide University with a bachelor of Oenology, Hamish went on to work and make wine for Best’s Great Western where industry legend Viv Thomson took him under his wing. After several other senior winemaking roles, Hamish went on to establish his own brand continuing the families long involvement in the wine industry.
The fruit for this wine was sourced from Seabrook’s Home Block vineyard located on the eastern ridge of Barossa Valley. The rows are orientated north south and the vineyard captures most of the afternoon sun, this coupled with the aspect, allow perfect conditions for early ripening. Matured for 24 months in barrel.

Selbach-Oster has a history in the wine trade dating back 1660, while the current winery was formed in the mid 1800's. Known for producing highly detailed and pure expressions of Riesling, Selbach-Oster have vines planted in some of the greatest sites in the Mosel, including Zeltinger Himmelreich, Schlossberg, and Sonnenuhr; Wehlener Sonnenuhr; and Graacher Himmelreich and Domprobst. Today, Johannes Selbach and his wife Barbara, with the increasing help of son Sebastian and daughter Hannah, manage their vineyards and winery with passion and respect for the estate’s long held traditions. Johannes, like his late father Hans, has continued the use of traditional oak fuder in his cellar, bringing in new large casks every few years. Vinification is carried out in a combination of fuder and stainless steel, in a hands-off manner with no fining, and predominantly with wild yeasts. The focus is on meticulous work in the vineyard with the aim to produce and bring home perfect fruit.

The 2020 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett was fermented down to fruity-styled levels of residual sugar. It offers a rather engaging nose made of pear, peach, and citrusy fruit, and floral elements. The wine develops quite some presence on the palate (it has 9% of alcohol) and leaves a subtle feel of canned peach in the long finish. It develops a great feel of finesse and presence in the after-taste. Drink 2026-2040.

2008 Single Malts of Scotland Glen Elgin 13 Year Old Australian Exclusive Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

A more quintessential Glen Elgin would be hard to find.

The official importer of The Single Malts of Scotland range has landed another very desirable Australian Exclusive. 260 bottles of this underdog malt from Fogwatt in Speyside are on offer. Revered by blenders, Glen Elgin's forte is its fruitiness - and the best examples are not just fruity, they're lush. Clear wort, a long fermentation time and slow distillation help shape its signature profile. Condensing then takes place in worm tubs adding body and complexity (it remains one of only a handful of distilleries that still uses worm tubs). Official bottlings are a rare sight these days with only a 12YO in production as part of Diageo's Hidden Malt range. In this Bourbon matured expression, the nose speaks of honey drizzled cereals and ripe cantaloupe. The oily delivery is gorgeously textural, thick, fruity and long with ripe pears and poached apples balanced by a flash of tangerine zest and a gentle tannic grip. There is a strong semblance to high class Linkwood, Cragganmore or even some Clynelish in its delicious, almost tropical fruitiness and threads of beeswax. If you've never tasted this style of malt, here's a perfect place to start. A more quintessential Glen Elgin would be hard to find. 56.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the importers... Nose: Pear drops, waxy apple skins, paraffin candles, cinnamon sticks and creme brulee coalesce in a portrait of apple strudel dusted with icing sugar. Taste: Creamy and tropical, notes of juicy pineapple and strawberry cream combine with freshly baked apple pie and rich vanilla. Absolutely gorgeous! Finish: Juicy, creamy and light - medium length.

    Sipsmith London Dry Gin (700ml)
    London, UNITED KINGDOM
    Reduced from $84.99
    $49. 99
    Bottle
    $599.88 Dozen
    ABV: 41.6%

"A near-perfect classic style gin... pretty much as good as it gets." 5/5 - theginisin.com

Established in 2009, Sipsmith boast to being the first copper-pot based distillery to start up in London in 189 years. One of only four gin distilleries located within the city limits, it's situated on a residential street in West London on the site of a former microbrewery (also the site which later became the office of famous beer hunter and whisky writer, Michael Jackson). Using an English barley mash created off-site, the company employs a German swan-necked copper-pot still which the proprietors named 'Prudence'. She's caricatured on the brand's labels as a stylised pot-still with a swan’s neck and head.

Sipsmith's London Dry is made using ten botanicals: Macedonian juniper berries, Bulgarian coriander seed, French angelica root, Spanish liquorice root, Italian orris root, Spanish ground almond, Chinese cassia bark, Madagascan cinnamon, Sevillian orange peel and Spanish lemon peel. If the botanicals seem rather commonplace by contemporary gin standards, the company vouches for their freshness, which is an often underestimated factor in gin production. Quite simply, the fresher the ingredients, the more potent the flavour infusion will be. Companies producing gin on a grand scale, such as Beefeater or Gordon’s simply can’t secure the quantities of botanicals required in fresh form for year round production. Water purity is also considered key. Batches are made 400 bottles at a time.

Geraldine Coates, who has written books about gin and runs the website ‘Gintime’, also considers the size and flexibility of new micro-distilleries like Sipsmith to be their real point of interest."It means they are producing the equivalent to caviar as opposed to tuna fish," she explains.

With its fairly classic London Dry botanical bill, Sipsmith's taste is predictable yet satisfying. The nose offers a restrained elegance - fresh juniper is the initial focus followed by hints of citrus peel, lavender and rosemary. A soft entry leads into a light to medium bodied mid palate that's gently spicy, almost creamy in texture and building in concentration with flavours of juniper and citrus lozenge. The balance is perfect, the finish pristine, persistent and refreshingly dry. Altogether an understated and stylish gin straight-up that also adds a creaminess to G&Ts. Recommended. 41.6% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Made with 10 internationally sourced botanicals—Seville orange peel, Italian orris root, et al.—this gin rings with plenty of juniper and licorice upfront, followed by lavender and citrus peel. Finishes smooth and mellow. 90 points - wineenthusiast.com

As London Dry gins go, Sipsmith is a quieter, sweeter example. The nose is mild, with the citrus notes easily overwhelming the juniper. The latter is more present on the body, but even there it’s kept in check by cinnamon sugar, some woody root notes, and, surprisingly, those almonds. The finish is more sweet than tart, and the spirit drinks far more sedately than its slightly overproof alcohol level would indicate. Worth a try, particularly in more fanciful gin-based cocktails. - drinkhacker.com

Sons of Eden is a partnership between winemaker Corey Ryan and viticulturist Simon Cowham who both learnt their trades in the vineyards and cellars of Eden Valley. Their labels Romulus and Remus come from the fable of the legendary founders of Ancient Rome. These twins were abandoned at birth and reared by a she-wolf. Romulus murdered his twin Remus in a fit of rage over the naming of Rome, the city which both had built. Legend presents Romulus (Barossa Valley) as the stronger, more powerful of the brothers, while Remus (Eden Valley) was more refined, focussed and elegant.
Fruit was sourced from the Nuriootpa, Light Pass and Menglers Hill sub regions of the Barossa Valley with vines aged between 60-80 years old. Maturation took place in French oak hogsheads of which 45% were new for a period of 18 months.

The palate is full-bodied with finely integrated tannins and bright acidity, giving intense notes of sarsaparilla, wild blackberries, sweet spices and mulberries. Structured and generous with an underlying freshness. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

2021 Sons of Eden Zephyrus Shiraz
    Barossa, South Australia, AUSTRALIA
    $39. 99
    Bottle
    $479.88 Dozen
    Cellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2023-2031)
    ABV: 14.5%
    Closure: Stelvin

Sons of Eden is a partnership between winemaker Corey Ryan and viticulturist Simon Cowham who both learnt their trades in the vineyards and cellars of Eden Valley. The name of this wine is taken from Zephyrus, the Greek god of the west wind who is often depicted as a horse. The vineyards of the Barossa are regularly buffeted by cooling Westerly winds creating an ideal temperature range in which to slowly ripen Shiraz.
The 2021 Zephyrus is a blend of 10 different Shiraz parcels located throughout a wide range of vineyard sites within the cooler climate Eden Valley (46%) and warmer Barossa Valley (54%) regions. The vines are aged between 25-60 years old. Each parcel of fruit was fermented with varying levels of whole-bunch fruit clusters (between 10% to 35%). Maturation took place in a mix of new (35%) and seasoned French oak hogsheads for a period of 12 months.

Gorgeously textured, powerful and richly fruited this is a textbook example modern styled Barossa Shiraz.

Magnificent colour featuring a saturated inky black heart along with a very deep dark red black hue. Engulfing the nostrils are potent aromas of dark plum, liquorice and blackberry infused with fennel followed by hints of blueberry, subtle smoky cedar and peppered meat notes. Rich, concentrated and gorgeously textured the palate is awash in opulent dark plum, liquorice, blackberry and ripe blueberry fruits. Notions of spicy vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered dried herb characters the back drop. Outstanding power, volume and depth with seamlessly integrated cashmere like tannins. Finishes long, sumptuous and plush.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.
    Alc. 14.5%

    Other Reviews…..
The 2021 Zephyrus Shiraz is a brilliant wine. Luscious tannins frame a bounty of black and purple fruit in the mouth, peppering it with coal dust/graphite/black tea and black olive tapenade. It's a really good, structural, balanced, spicy, exciting Shiraz. It is polished but earthy, too, really well handled. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023-2031.

Erin Larkin – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate

This is very good, for those after quality Barossa. 2021, an unimpeachable vintage by virtue of its cooler mien, refined tannins and palpable natural degrees of freshness. While the winemaking hand is evident, with smoky barrel fermentation notes, mocha oak and a clutch of floral reduction, the flowing fruit is pure and impressive. The structural attributes are well applied, integrated and serving to compress the inherent largesse of Barossa into a nourishing, drinkable whole. A class act. Drinkable now, but best after 2027. Savarro is an ancient green-skinned, tight-bunched grape variety that was first recorded in the 10th century. Over the millennia it travelled to all corners of Europe and was then extensively used to create many of today’s modern varieties. The cool climate of the Yarra Valley is perfect for the Savarro, with Soumah’s take on the variety cool tank fermented to retain fresh aromatics and aged on lees to promote texture.
Brilliant water like core with highlights of green around the edges. Elevated aromas of pear and red apple infused with fresh herbs are followed by hints of lime and stony mineral notes. The intensely flavoured palate features scrumptious pear, green to red apple and lime fruits over a fresh herb and flinty mineral laced back drop. Nicely shaped front half with crisp acidity leading into a ravishingly moreish finish that’s long and dry.
Drink over the next 1-2 years.

Savagnin is the variety. Matured on lees is part of the methodology.
A pale, lighter wine but there’s mettle of texture, grip and swagger of chalkiness, in amongst red apple, green pear, tonic water and waxy cumquat characters. So too a little green almond and cashew nut through it all. A slightly breathy, marzipan note to finish. There’s plenty on here, the texture a highlight and concentration at a lighter weight level impressive. You can say ‘good drinking’ with ease here. Drink 2025-2030.

Confident, assertive and ballsy is how Springbank at natural strength has been described. The 25th release sees 70% matured in bourbon barrels and 30% drawn from sherry casks. Big and wild as only Springbank can be, you can expect notes of sherried prunes, almonds and brown sugar with lighter notes of vanilla and apples intermingled with industrial smokiness. A whisky that develops well in the glass... 57.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... "...very typical Springbank bottling with lots of funky notes combined with a maritime edge and a whiff of smoke. This being a very typical Springbank also means it’s very typically awesome. Highly recommended stuff..." - maltfascination.com

Collectors note: Springbank's labels almost always arrive with minor wearing and markings, most often to the top of the front labels. This is unavoidable. If you are likely to be disappointed by minor label scuffing, we recommend you don't buy these whiskies.

What a difference time makes. It wasn't that long ago when Springbank was hit by the whisky crash of the 1980s. Forced to close from 1979 to 1987, they re-opened and pledged never to sell to third party blenders again, but instead maintain a modest output, building their success on single malts alone. That decision has paid off. Leading the charge is their entry level ten. Debuting in 2000, distilled two and a half times and peated to around 12-15 ppm, in his book, “101 Whiskies to Try before You Die”, Ian Buxton describes it as “Arguably the most traditional Scotch Whisky...a must have whisky if ever there was one”. Bourbon casks are primarily used for maturation, allowing the distillery character to shine through. Sherry casks are also employed for added body. The ratio usually falls around 60% / 40%, but that can vary between releases. It's this whisky that must set the bar for everything else Springbank make - and it does so with aplomb. Coastal, fruity, malty, medium to full-bodied and with a dry, peaty edge, it's hard to think of another ten year old offering as much substance and complexity. 46% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Other reviews... [2024 bottling] Colour: white wine. Nose: I get the impression that SB 10 is becoming increasingly earthy, dirty, laden with soot, basalt, oyster shells, slightly rancid olive oil, mustard, slags, and various yeasts—everything we love, though it’s perhaps not quite to your new neighbour’s taste, just to be clear. SB 10 will never replace a good, easy Champagne blanc de blancs (not entirely sure about that last remark, S.). Mouth: austere, intensely saline, peppery, even dirtier on the palate, with striking bitterness and that unmistakable oily texture. Grilled aubergines come close, before lemon peel and a generous glass of fino sherry ride to the rescue. And it’s not the first time one gets the impression they’ve poured a bit of Longrow into the vatting tank. Finish: long, with that wonderfully discordant sensation of an oily yet razor-sharp malt. The aftertaste is saline, peppery, mezcal-like, and lemony. Comments: perhaps it’s that untamed, uncommercial edge that makes this so sought after. Go figure; we, of course, adore it, as ever. 91 points - whiskyfun.com

Established in 1990, Stefano Lubiana is Tasmania’s first and only certified biodynamic vineyard, the family are now 5th and 6th generation winemakers with a history going back to Italy. Primavera is a single vineyard Pinot Noir made up of a mix of two terroirs: grey gravelly loams over clay and red loam over gravel. Fruit is mostly wild fermented, de-stemmed and taken off skins early to retain lots of fruit flavour. The grapes are hand picked, hand sorted and fermented with some whole bunches. Maturation takes place in French oak for a period of 8-10 months.
Semi translucent dark red core with black toned edges and a vibrant light purple red hue. Pretty violet, red to dark cherry and strawberry scents blossom from the glass with plenty of intensity followed by hints of anise, dried herbs, rhubarb and forest floor. Delicious red to dark cherry, strawberry and anise flavours decorate the palate over a back drop of forest floor, dried herbs and brambly spice. Supple yet fresh in its feel with finely shaped tannins it concludes long and juicy.

Renown for his Cotie Roties which regularly flirt with 100 point scores, Stephane Ogier is regarded as one of the hottest winemakers in France. His entry level Cotes du Rhone is a brilliant value sourced from vineyards in the Plan de Dieu and Visan with vines aged between 30-50 years old. A blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah it’s aged for 10 months in concrete vats.

Rich and Sumptuous yet featuring a robust structure this is an outstanding Cotes du Rhone.

Deep black dark red core with a dark red purple tinged hue. Enchanting the olfactory senses is a heady mix of black raspberry, liquorice and black cherries which are trailed by some scorched earth, incense like characters and peppered provincial herb notes. Rich and concentrated the medium to full bodied palate is saturated with lush black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits which are framed by a sturdy tannin structure. An intensely flavoured and texturally gorgeous Rose that delivers fantastic value.

Drawing on Tahbilk estate plantings of Grenache and Mourvèdre the fruit for this moreish Rose is picked early to retain freshness and delicacy, with the grapes crushed and pressed with as little oxygen contact as possible to preserve the fresh fruit characters. A technique favoured in Provence is then used to increase texture and mouthfeel, by mixing the cold juice (including the pulp and solids) with nitrogen gas briefly each day over four days. The wine is then racked to produce clear juice and fermented with a specific Rosé yeast.

Produced from a blend of 68% Grenache and 32% Mourvedre it features a translucent salmon pink tinged colour and an enchanting nose that offers up delightful aromatics of raspberry, strawberry and pomegranate followed by a faint whiff of wet stone. Intensely flavoured and gorgeously shaped, the palate is layered with delicious raspberry, pomegranate and musk flavours which sit over a strawberry and wet stone back drop. Showing brisk underlying acidity it finishes dry, supple and long. Fantastic value.

Vibrant musk pink hues. Nails the yin and yang brilliance that the two grapes bring to rosé - mourvèdre the black fruits, high tannin and acidity and grenache the red fruits and lively spice. Cherry, strawberry, bramble, loganberry, spice mingle easily, offset with musky florals. Plenty of dry, crisp refreshment on offer. An all-rounder at the table. Drink by 2027.

    Isle of Skye, SCOTLAND

Talisker 10YO super buy! Includes a bonus Talisker branded mug to take camping.

'The lava of the Cuillins' - that's how Talisker, the Golden Spirit of Skye was described by one poetic taster: the only single malt from a spectacularly beautiful island of wild moorlands and dramatic mountain peaks known as the Cuillins. Built in Carbost in 1831 near 'Talisker House', the distillery has entertained such personalities as Boswell & Johnson. Another celebrity who enjoyed his Talisker was author, Robert Louis Stevenson, describing it in 1880 as 'king 'o' drinks'. Stevenson rightly recognised it as bearing similarities to both the Glenlivet and Islay malts. However, by taking 'the best of both worlds' so to speak, it achieved a unique style. In 1892 Roderick Kemp, a part owner sold his share to establish the now-immortal Macallan. Talisker has continued strong since under the ownership of Diageo. An individual malt that remains an island classic, Talisker invariably offers a great sniff. At ten years old, the aromas are pungent-yet-fresh with Islay-like seaweedy smokiness and sweet fruity malt. There's a bold maritime influence on the palate too, perfectly complemented by a spicy, very peppery lingering finish. A little honey threads its way through the beautifully balanced spirit. Not harsh but warming. Always satisfying to re-discover this West Highland gem. 45.8% Alc./Vol.

A quite stupendous malt to be enjoyed at any time. But especially at night. - 93 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2019

...Another that should need no introduction. The thing to look for in Talisker, as with all smoky whiskies, is sweetness that gives the requisite balance to the drying effect of smoke. Underneath Talisker’s smoke, which ain't as all-pervading as Lagavulin, is a sweet pear-like quality. When young there are notes of the land: heather, moor, sweet seaweed, and a finish that has a distinctive cracked black pepper hit. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Dave Broom (Summer 2012)

Nose: A razor-sharp spiciness lances through Demerara sweetness and rich peat. Absolutely magnificent. Palate: The enormous build up of spice adds to the multi-layered peat. The sweetness is almost like freshly crushed grist. Wave upon wave, layer upon layer of complexity. Finish: Massively warming and still spicy. The peat lingers while the spice bristles. Comment: A dram to be savoured and celebrated. Rating: 95  - www.whiskymag.com.

"...this is just brimming with vitality and purpose." - Jim Murray

There's 'Storm' and then there's 'Dark Storm': One is ubiquitous, the other frustratingly difficult to find yet generally considered the most desirable NAS expression from a distillery that excels in youth. Judging by the success of previous shipments, we know Dark Storm is a favourite of many who otherwise would have to be traveling internationally to buy it. The peatiest whisky Talisker produce, maturation in heavily charred casks imparts even more smoke and pepper to an already intense malt. The result is extreme yet balanced. We've managed to secure another parcel while maintaining the sharpest price possible. One litre duty free exclusive bottling. 45.8% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... some pretty chunky peat and spice is blown around the glass, certainly big enough to take the muscovado sugars head on...the sugars on the nose appear to multiply on delivery, as does the bourbon-style tannin-led liquorice and hickory...all is fresh and balanced enough to come good, even with some very late spices; much more like it! Unlike the storm which appeared to labour under some different American oak, this is just brimming with vitality and purpose. 92 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2016

...Dark Storm is exclusive to Travel Retail outlets, and maturation has taken place in deeply charred casks. Rich, fruity spices on the nose, quite citric, with brine and aromatic smoke. The smoke elbows its way to the fore in time. Full, sweet, fruity flavors on the palate, some vanilla, then smoke, licorice, and spice hit home. A classic Talisker smoke and chili finish, but cranked up a notch or two!
89 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Gavin Smith (Winter 2013)

...Liked this baby when it first came out, although the 10 always reigned supreme in my book. Colour: gold. Nose: it does nose young, but not immature. It’s big Talisker, rather emphatic and even slightly ‘in your face’, with nice notes of fermenting leaves and fruits, dried kelp (more dried kelp than on an inaccessible beach), a very grassy/leafy smokiness, and not that many pencil shavings, while earliest version had more of that. Notes of bitter marmalade. Mouth: seriously, this is super good, if a tad cloying. They seem to have pushed the ashes and the drying parts, and lowered the fruits. Tends to become a little bitter, on Fernet Branca, various artichoke liqueurs, ginger, heavy cinnamon… The wood sure has a lot to say here. Finish: long, drying, very smoky and extremely spicy. Some oak in the aftertaste. Comments: a comedian that goes a little overboard, but it’s still one of my favourite young Taliskers. Like ‘Storm’ better, though – and of course the 10.  83 points - whiskyfun.com

From what is arguably considered to be Wrattonbully’s best producer, this Nicks Secret offering is a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon and 43% Shiraz matured in old French oak barriques and foudres for a period of 14 months. 2022 was a mild vintage and provided the perfect slow ripening framework for Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz in Wrattonbully.

A classic Australian blend showing a Bordeaux like structure and elegance.

Totally opaque black dark red core with a dark red hue. Elevated aromas of blackcurrant and liquorice mix with mulberry, tobacco, dried herb, earthy black olive and spicy cedar notes. Mid weighted and refined yet generously endowed with blackcurrant, mulberry and more subtle red liquorice fruit, the palate possesses both elegance and ample freshness. Dusty cedar, dried herb, earth, black olive and spice characters also chime in to lend further interest. Fine grained, yet quite sturdy tannins. Excellent length concluding long and spicy with a Bordeaux like finesse.

57/43% cabernet sauvignon/shiraz. Matured in French oak barrels and foudres for 14 months. Raspberry gel, pomegranate juice and morello cherries in syrup. Blackberry wine gums, sage and thyme. This really encompasses the claret style, the ease of drinking and the ability to please an array of palates. Still knitting together, this wine will cellar very well, as it opens like a flower in slow motion. Tannins are lacy and fine with peaks of acidity dotted throughout the palate. Cinnamon, cumin and mace spice to finish. Drink by 2034.

The cooler vintage in Wrattonbully has contributed to a stylish medium bodied wine of impeccable presentation and poise. The medium bodied fruit has been worked with only old French oak and foudres, so as not to overpower. Nice combination of black fruits with a red fruit lift in a perfumed style with deeper slightly meaty black fruit characters. The tannins are finely integrated in this wine of great poise that will continue to evolve with extended cellaring. Drink 2024-2039.

Time and time again, it is the tannin profile in fruit off the ***** Vineyard in Wrattonbully – with soils and geology dating back 35 million years – that both delights and, occasionally, astounds. Tannins – invariably naturally integrated – help so much to give the wines a sense of place and presence, but always remain a bit of a background note for both drinkers and critics, alike. That, in itself, says a lot. So, take it as read, that the tannin profile adds that X Factor to this wine (and its score). Cabernet Sauvignon (57%) and Shiraz (43%) go head to head and it makes for something a little savoury, a little minerally, a little earthy and generous in flavour. Dark fruited, spice-fuelled with chocolate and notes of earth and leather roll across the tongue effortlessly. It’s both warm and friendly but also structured. Those tannins together with the grapes’ natural acidity – the springs and gears of the wine – looking good. Shines bright now, but neither will it dim over the next 10 years or more. Drink 2024-2036.

A classic Australian claret Wrattonbully style and this smashes the brief. Vibrant and downright delicious, this is a fabulous Cabernet Shiraz to rip into.
Scents of pan juices, mushroom broth and dried violets light things up before a swathe of energetic blackberries and black currants rise up. Subtle earthiness, red cherries and dark chocolate aren't far from the action and do their best to steal the limelight. Some savoury delights come in the form of dried sage and dried thyme with fine pillows of grainy and dusty tannins. The structure and shape are most impressive but what strikes me is its detail and presence, and even after a few days of tasting, it presented an attractive glossy sheen. Glorious!

Teusner’s Bilmore Shiraz is sourced from vineyards along the western ridge of the valley floor, an area stretching south of Seppeltsfield Road, around the back of the golf club at Rowland Flat and then on through the parish of Gomersal that overlooks the southern township of Lyndoch. Shiraz grown in these parts produces richly flavoured wines with soft and round textures that are dangerously drinkable. For the Bilmore Shiraz Kym Teusner puts the emphasis on Barossa’s trademark luxurious fruit using only older, seasoned barrels to mature the wine for a period of around 12 months.
Impenetrable inky black in colour with a very deep black dark red hue. Alluring dark plum, liquorice and blackberry scents engulf the nostrils trailed by some vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered earth notes. Rich, concentrated and lush the full bodied palate is awash with succulent blackberry, liquorice, dark plum and blueberry fruits. Opulent textural feel with notions of fennel, vanillin cedar, earth and pepper lying underneath. Finishes with a blueberry like freshness, velvety tannins and a long sumptuous conclusion.

The Gospel continue to explore the regional effects of rye in their latest limited release. Compared to their signature unmalted Mallee Rye, this is made with 100% malted rye sourced from the Riverina region and aged in a second-fill Chardonnay Tawny cask. The palate exudes flavours of vanilla malt, oily rye and liquorice bullets with a mouthfeel that's buttery, malt-like and beautifully rounded. Any sharpness expected of the grain is subdued, only slight rye spices remain evident. The trade-off for such a pillow-soft delivery means that the complexity associated with the finest examples of the genre isn't quite achieved. Add water and the flavours get more chocolatey and single malt-whisky-like, diminishing the distinctive character of the grain. That said, Projects Rye is another incredibly moreish and wonderfully textural whiskey; tasted straight or with minimal water, you'll find it hard to stop at one. 54% Alc./Vol.

The palate begins with warm baked fruits, watermelon, crystalized sugar, clove, pepper, Red Vines, red apple, taffy, and fruity red wine before a spicy finish. The cautious addition of a little water opens it up fully. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...Lovely bottle with some kind of mermaid, would go well for suntan lotion too. No, really. I hope the wood treatment remained kind of moderate, because I think I have noticed that they've been cranking them up with last year's SRs. For example, this is ex-bourbon (good) and wine (bad) casks. Wine casks, wazzat? What is 'a wine cask'? Could we remain focused on the whiskies? Colour: gold. Nose: cask-driven. Vanilla, cakes, Nutella, macchiato. Starbucks whisky. With water: more Nutella. I just hope no orang-outangs have been harmed along the process. Mouth (neat): good for sure but indeed, there is a lot of Nescafé and Nutella. With water: roasted hazelnut and more Nescafé. Finish: medium, very dry, pretty oaky. Comments: I can't quite see how and why this would be 'Rare and Exceptional', but indeed it is rather 'Fair and Okay'. Now I've heard they'll soon launch new expressions of Ord that will be much closer to the Distillery's brilliant own character, in the vein of the magical official 28 and 30 of old. Unless I've been dreaming once more… … …  82 points - whiskyfun.com

The Singleton of Dufftown was launched in selected duty free outlets in 2006 and made available to retail markets in 2008. Stylishly packaged in a distinctive 19th century-style 'flask', the colour of the bottle reflects the blue flint glass used at the turn of the previous century. The whisky was matured in both American and European oak casks. Owned by Diageo, Singleton is presently their second largest distillery in terms of production, behind the recently built Roseisle facility (2009). The majority of its mammoth output goes to blends such as Bell's, Dewar's and Johnnie Walker. The distillery first drew water from Highlandman John’s Well in 1896 and continues to do so to this day.

Other reviews... Diageo's Singleton range is its answer to the problem of how to build a global single malt brand when each distillery will ultimately be limited by its capacity. Answer? A single brand: ‘Singleton,' but from three distilleries, each focused on a different area of the world. Singleton of Dufftown is Europe's expression, and this 15 year old combines cake mix, peanut butter, and fleshy fruits. There's dried banana and vanilla on the palate, and a nutty sweet finish. 83 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Sourced from a single block of Light Pass mataro. Pure, ripe plum, blueberry and red forest-berry fruits held in the dust of exotic spice, liminal mataro garrigue and notes of roasting meats. Floral tones abound too … violets, frangipani and something vaguely musky that I can't put my finger on. Impressive fruit purity and ripeness on the palate, packed with wild spice and dried citrus tones, tannins like little puffy clouds and a finish that has a distinct meaty facet. Me gusta! Thistledown is the vision of Master of Wine, Giles Cooke. His focus is on Grenache working with growers across McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and Riverland. Fruit for the Vagabond was sourced from four separate old, dry grown, bush trained vineyards in Blewitt Springs planted in deep sands with some ironstone. Fermented with 35% whole bunches it was matured in mix of concrete egg and oak puncheons.

Deep dark red core with black shaded edges and a vibrant dark red purple hue. Seducing the olfactory senses are the varieties hallmark scents of dark raspberry, dark cherry and red liquorice followed by some red plum, fresh herb, vanillin spice and pepper notes. Juicy dark raspberry, cherry and liquorice fruits are both powerful and intense within a muscular framework of tannins. Opulent yet energetic feel with notions of vanillin spice, infusions of fresh herbs and peppered earth elements adding further detail. The delicious finish long and fresh yet structured.

Blewitt Springs, an Australian grand cru equivalent. Old bush vines, as is the wont. Wild fermented with a good portion of whole bunches, some in concrete pyramids sans agitation, before ageing in concrete and large neutral oak. Brilliant! The 2022 The Factor is a celebration of old-vine vineyards in Barossa. Aromatically, this philosophy is clear as day in the wine. Barossa is stylistically adaptable and flexible, and at its best, it's able to convey a sense of meatiness, charred bacon fat, alongside kicked red earth and brick dust, an array of exotic spices and purple fruit, all the while conveying balance and focus. These are the best examples of its capability. All of these things are evident in this wine, and it shows concentration and length in spades. It's a big, powerful wine but balanced too. Excellent. 15.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and wax. Drink 2025-2037.

The 2022 Descendant is a co-fermented blend of Shiraz and Viognier (8%), and the wine exudes masses of floral perfume, which translates accurately in the mouth. It is silky and intense; the tannins are ductile and pervasive, and yet they have a bloody, ferruginous note that makes their dispersion feel more like an infusion than a framework. This is the wine that people seem to lose their minds over, and just between you and me, I do understand that. It's one of a handful of super sensational Shiraz Viognier from this great country, and the ability of this cuvée to speak so eloquently of both the Barossa and its harmonious varietals is impressive to say the least. So is, while we're discussing it, the density and volume of the wine. On the nose, the 2021 RunRig is savory and meaty, with charry oak at the fore, backed by black cherry, graphite, dried rose petals, red and purple fruit, flowers and black tea. There is both detail and density. On the palate, the wine is both silky and huge. It's momentous, long and complex. It's like the volume has been turned up in every possible way, and what I know of sound mixing is on show here; it's a loud mix, but all the elements are perfectly in balance. And ultimately, that's what's up. Like Nick Cave, it's got it all, and it does it with conviction and intellect. It's a great wine, from a great season. Bigger than perhaps ever before. 15% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2024-2051.

2021 RunRig will make you turn your head while you gawp in disbelief. This wine has something I have never seen in Runrig before – an immovable mountain of terroir, monolithically anchored in its core. Standing at the foot of this gargantuan flavour, I could not see the summit. There is so much ravishing Shiraz skin draped decorously around this totemic terroir it appears wholly demonic and fear-inducing. But the fruit notes are as refined and finely tuned as ever, providing the taster with a baffling counterpoint between the Dark Side and a Venetian dandy, resplendent in its filigree and finery. I cannot remember seeing two such opposing characters in one wine before, and every time I went back to the glass, there was more to admire, and these elements fuse and shape-shift into a glorious amalgam of sophistication and power. Of course, it deserves a perfect score. This wine is unique and uniquely stunning. I wish I could attend every opening of 2021 RunRig – oh, to be a fly on the wall, listening to the gasps of delight when people are lucky enough to taste this wine. (2030 – 2045)

Pour moi, since Ian Hongel took over the reigns at Torbreck, the house 'thumbprint' seems less percussive, the trademark Torbreck plushness remains, but subregion and site seem to have a little more light on it. The RunRig in a strong vintage is always much anticipated. Shiraz with 2% viognier, from across Torbreck's best sites, aged for 30 months in French oak (50% new). It's a dark-eyed, powerful release, with clove-studded blackberry and black plum fruits and deep, dark spices, cardamom, star anise, licorice, espresso, cedar, 'Old Jamaican' chocolate and earth. Thick-shouldered and meaty with layers of silty, fine tannin and a crème de cassis-like flow to the fruit as it powers off. Drink by 2043.

On the nose, it offers a complete vision of Barossa Shiraz—chewy, supple, spicy, big, expansive and voluminous. It has a way of being both structural and inviting and flows long through the finish. This is a very good wine here, classy, comforting and evocative, and while silky, it's also pleasingly regional. The tannins are gently chewy through the finish, which I like very much. Drink 2024-2041.

Offers a dense, powerful mix of violet, bittersweet chocolate and sandalwood-infused morello cherries in syrup. Blueberry, blackberry and date-nut bread flavors are plump on a frame of polished and toothsome tannins. Clove and Saigon cinnamon notes linger, with a powerful crescendo on the finish. Shiraz. Drink now through 2039.

A delicious Sicilian blend with tangy acidity, a slightly rustic feel and long savoury red fruited finish.

Produced from Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio grapes aged for approximately 6 months in large wooden barrels. Semi translucent red to brick red colour with a light brick red hue. Fragrant dried cherry, rose petal, blood orange and raspberry scents infused with dried herbs, scorched earth and cinnamon spice drift through the nostrils. Complimenting delicious cherry, blood orange and raspberry fruits are infusions of dried Mediterranean herbs, volcanic rock and spicy earth. A gentle rustic feel is imparted by slightly tangy acidity and grainy tannins. Concludes long, fresh and savoury.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.

The 2020 Etna Rosso is remarkably pretty, leading off with dusty roses and dried strawberries complicated by suggestions of violet and lavender. This flows effortlessly across the palate with floral-laced red fruits enhanced by sour citrus and spice. The 2020 lingers incredibly long yet maintains a lovely inner freshness. The 2020 is exceptionally pure and impossible to resist. Drink 2024-2028.

The Coteaux Bourguignons A.O.C. was created in 2011 and borders on the entire Burgundy region, from Chablis to the gates of Lyon. Red, white and rosé wines and can be either made of a blend or a single grape variety. Trénel’s Coteaux Bourguignons is produced from Gamay with vines aged between 40-60 years located near Villefranche and le Bois d'Oingt on the characteristic limestone soils of South Beaujolais.
Deep dark red purple core with black toned edges and a bright purple red hue. Escaping from the glass are fragrant violet, red to dark cherry and clove scents with some earthy incense and spice notes also evident. The delicious, deeply fruited palate features an abundance of dark cherry, raspberry and red liquorice flavours over an earthy incense, clove and spice back drop. Juicy mouth feel with polished yet underlyingly sturdy tannins. Both spicy and smoky it concludes long and succulent. A great value, easy drinking red.
Drink over the next 2-3 years.
