Michel Couvreur Cap a Pie Blended French Whisky (700ml)
    Burgundy, FRANCE
    $154. 99
    Bottle
    $1859.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45%

Launched in 2018, this is a first edition for 2018 with a decent proportion of malt whiskies mixed with the grain, as well as some sherry input. Brilliant gold. Pure, fresh and grainy opening sniffs. 2-3 minutes aeration drops the intensity, hinting at straw bail, sponge cake, sweet tea biscuits, a touch of barley sugar and developing orchard fruitiness. Medium dry, this feels more grain-led than malt-heavy with moderate spice and understated dried apple / pear notes. The finish is crisp and minerally, with a mild flare of warming spirit. 45% Alc./Vol.

Michel Couvreur Intravagan'za Cask Strength Malt Whisky (700ml)
    Burgundy, FRANCE
    $169. 99
    Bottle
    $2039.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

Tasting note: Matured for 3 years in Moscatel and Oloroso casks. The pale gold amber colour has some small particles floating in it. Opening sniffs are mildly prickly, waxy and furniture polish-like. Second phase releases vanilla wafer, caramel and sweet cereal notes in a bouquet that's akin to youthful grain spirit with an Irish softness. The palate follows suit with a straightforward vanilla, caramel burst. Youthful spiciness. The finish is a little hollow and detracts from the overall balance. 50% Alc./Vol.

Burgundy is a place full of personalities at the high end of the passion scale, especially when it comes to food and drink - perhaps none more so than a Belgian who began maturing Scotch Whisky in the heart of the famous wine region. The fellow in question is Michel Couvreur. He had already established a business in the early 1950s in Scotland selling Burgundy wines when in 1978, French friends suggested that he add a top quality Scotch to his portfolio. So began Couvreur’s interest in whisky from which he developed his ultra-traditionalist perspective on oak. He maintains (more radically than others in the industry) that 90% of a whisky’s quality comes from the cask, and only 10% comes from the distillation process. In the 1970s, American bourbon casks gradually replaced port and sherry casks for the maturation of Scotch, a great tragedy, according to Couvreur, as it changed the essence of a product that had European barrels at its core. In something of a personal crusade, Couvreur settled in Bouze-les-Beaune (close to the Burgundian town of Beaune, France), where he opened a customs bonded cellar and began selecting his own Spanish sherry casks (Pedro Ximenez and Palomino). Some readers will be aware, since the 1970's, sherry ceased to be shipped to UK in wood. Whisky producers have now to go and select their casks at sherry bodegas, paying a premium on top of transport costs. It's partly for this reason that Couvreur's cellar is located in Burgundy, half-way between Scotland and Andalusia, with straight motorways from Jerez de la Frontera to Beaune. Courveur's "Scotch" starts out in Scotland as bulk a.k.a.“clearach” (a high proof distillate) which is transferred to his humid cellars to be aged in small sherry casks that have been impregnated with 25 years aging via traditional soleras. Although Couvreur passed away in 2013, his son-in-law Cyril Deschamps and his Cellar Master Jean-Arnaud Frantzen, with the invaluable help of Michel’s devoted wife Marthe and his daughter Alexandra, continue to follow to the letter the original philosophy of the house. Constantly on the search for novel casks (they’ve recently started working with Jura Vin Jaune), total production is about 50,000 bottles annually. All required dilutions are accomplished with bottled water from Scotland and every bottle is hand-corked, hand-waxed and hand-labelled. These artisan whiskies are invariably interesting, sometimes quirky and occasionally magical.

Michel Couvreur Candid Malt Whisky (700ml)
    Burgundy, FRANCE
    $240. 00
    Bottle
    $2880.00 Dozen
    ABV: 49%

Tasting note: Candid is from malt distilled in 2006 and matured in x-Pedro Ximenez botas (250 liters). Four casks were blended. The deep polished copper colour appears slightly turbid in the glass. The aroma is promising with its initially sweet, vanilla / caramel opening. Prickles the nose on the second pass which is redolent of Christmas pudding. Delicately bitter sweet entry. A flourish of spices covers the tongue; some very attractive, almost juicy fruit cake-like moments here too, sustained into the warm, drying fade. Good length. 49% Alc./Vol.

Michel Couvreur The Unique Blended French Whisky (700ml)
    Burgundy, FRANCE
    $119. 99
    Bottle
    $1439.88 Dozen
    ABV: 44%

A Couvreur blend of malted and un-malted Scotch whiskies (both Pot-still and Coffey distilled). Matured partly in Scotland and partly in France, after four years in barrel it was reduced with Pentland Hills water. Soft and sweet on the nose with notes of dried grass and straw bail, developing with cream tea biscuits and a little citrus lift. That citrusy, grassy zest is on the palate too, giving a sprightly lift to the sweet malt. Spicy. Tastes its age. Non chill filtered. 44% Alc./Vol.

Michel Couvreur's "Scotch" starts out in Scotland as bulk a.k.a.“clearach” (a high proof distillate) which is transferred to his humid cellar in Bouze-les-Beaune, Burgundy, France to be aged in small sherry casks. Total production is about 50,000 bottles or 4,000 cases annually. From 1978 on, Couvreur made maturing whiskies his life’s work, dedicating research to a process which he once compared to 'cross-fertilisation'. Couvreur passed away in 2013; his son-in-law Cyril Deschamps and his cellar master Jean-Arnaud Frantzen, with the invaluable help of Michel’s devoted wife Marthe and his daughter Alexandra, continue to follow to the letter the original philosophy of the house.

    Burgundy, FRANCE
    $189. 99
    Bottle
    $2279.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Tasting note: A vatting of single malts aged between 12 and 20 years in Pedro Ximenez casks. Brassy / gold appearance. Soft vanilla and malt on the nose. Some attractive dried fruits adding depth on the second inspection then more cereals and finally, fruit and nut chocolate. Immediately captivates with its svelte, cream - textured entry; lovely integration and balance with fruit and nut flavours augmented by buzzing spices. Good persistence. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... I remember the early-to-mid 1990s, I did go to a Couvreur tasting in Strasbourg, where their rep told us that whisky was all about wood. It was the first time I was hearing that; I hated the idea right away. But a lot of water (and sawdust) has gone under the bridge since back then… By the way, I suppose ‘overaged’ means pretty young, with some whiskies you always need to translate those things, don’t you. Colour: deep gold. Nose: well, it’s pretty nice, sherried yet balanced, with a good sultanas/malt combo, just a touch of struck match, some lighter pipe tobacco, and loud and clear notes of dried dates. With a marzipan filling! Nice nose, really, I cannot not think of some young Macallans from that period. You know, the 1990s. Also a little menthol and a little ham. A good surprise. Mouth: really old style, starting with some leather and some tobacco, and going on with a sooty sherry, some dry sultanas, and drops of Guinness plus orange squash. No problems with the lower strength. Finish: medium, cleaner than expected, with some herbal teas, cherry stems, more tobacco… Comments: I tend to like the brighter style of the Blooming Gorse even better, but yeah, this little Couvreur was really nice. 83 points - whiskyfun.com

Michel Couvreur Blossoming Auld Sherried Single Malt Whisky (700ml)
    Burgundy, FRANCE
    $450. 00
    Bottle
    $5400.00 Dozen
    ABV: 45%
Tasting note: The deep mahogany / gold ochre hue stains the sides of the glass and shows good viscosity. Mildly prickly aroma offers suggestions of pancake, dilute maple syrup and mocha. Little variation in the second phase which, if anything sees the intensity drop a notch. Light entry opens to a plush, clean, richly sherried profile; semi sweet Christmas cake flavours, hollowing out at the finish, concluding with vanilla and caramel at the fade. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Colour: dark amber. Nose: this is much more elegant! Prunes, leather, cigars, old wooden furniture and orange marmalade. Mouth: yes, a much better balance here. Smooth, rounded yet not lumpish at all, all on fruitcake, orange zests, sultanas and notes of aniseed. Plus various spices including cloves. Finish: long and in the same vein. Comments: excellent, classic sherried malt. 88 points - Serge Valentin, whiskyfun.com

...Nikka Days is probably the newest product to join the Nikka stable - only released in mid-2020, it joins other blended whisky expressions from Nikka such as the Nikka Tailored, Super Nikka, Nikka From The Barrel, and many more. As the name suggests, this was designed for easy daily drinking and is a Bourbon cask aged blend of malt and grain whiskies from across the Nikka spectrum and likely from the Ben Nevis Scotch distillery as well (making it not purely a Japanese whisky). It comes in a really pretty bottled with a yellow theme that is a really nice pop on an otherwise traditionally more muted whisky shelf. This was as expected very approachable, easy to drink, but with a nice added hit of citrusy flavours and smoked cream which amounts to a decent complexity. For an entry level whisky, the aroma and finish was particularly standout and definitely made me feel that this punched above its weight. If you’re going to buy something entry level, I genuinely think this should be your pick. It’s not over-oaked, it’s not thin to a sin, no off notes or sharpness, nor is it actually bad in any way - for the most part it’s quite the delight. Don’t count this one out. Solid pick, cute bottle, nice whisky. - 88bamboo.co

Quite youthful aromas of citrus fruit, sherry wood spices and a touch of smoke. The palate is mellow with some citrus and plenty of sherry wood spices. Whisky is big business in Japan with Scotch whisky being especially popular, yet with their own history of brewing and sake production, it's only logical that the Japanese are now making whisky too. What began as a conscious imitation of Scotch, now has a style all of its own, and since commercial production began in the early 20th century, the quality has been steadily improving.

Today, most of the malt whisky produced in Japan is for blending but Japanese distillers generally don't trade casks in the manner that Scottish distillers do. Consequently, it's up to each distillery to produce a diversity of styles that will form the base components of 'house blends' that offer unique and complex flavour profiles. Some Japanese blends will even include a percentage of Scotch whisky, rather than whisky from rival local distillers. This jealous reluctance to exchange is considered one of the major obstacles holding the industry back from the prominence it deserves: In a number of blind tastings recently organised by Whisky Magazine, which have included Japanese single malts in the lineup along with malts from distilleries considered to be among the best in Scotland, on more than one occasion, the results have had Japanese single malts scoring higher than their Scotch counterparts.

After a long absence from the Australian market, we've finally managed to secure some world class Japanese whiskies from the Nikka distillery, Japan’s second largest whisky producer after Suntory. Now owned by the brewer Asahi, the company was originally set up by Masataka Taketsuru, who built Yoichi distillery in 1934, having previously spent two years studying the art of distilling in Scotland. (He also developed the now famous 'Yamazaki' distillery in Kyoto for Suntory which he managed for ten years).

The Miyagikyo Distillery is Nikka's second distillery and was built in 1969 after Taketsuru came upon the site, completely enclosed by mountains and sandwiched between the Shin and Hirose rivers. The areas fresh water and crisp air produce soft and mild malt, while the humidity is considered perfect for spirit maturation. At present eight stills are in operation.

    'World Class!' - David Broom.
Tasting note: Bright gold colour with a pale straw hue. Pristine, fresh notes of mouthwatering barley combine with juicy, estery aromas, in particular banana confectionary. There's also a discreet, sweet smokey base to the aroma. A sexy sniff. The nose repeats on the palate, only spice and smoke make a more substantial presence. Soft, warming spirit. Excellent balance. Long aftertaste of cereals, spice and lanolin. Finishes dry and peppermint like. Eminently drinkable whisky. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The nose offers little to encourage, but the sweetened softness of delivery is delicious; there is even a swirl of smoke on the finish to add weight.  Rating: 85 points  - Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2009

Yoichi typically produces rich, peaty and masculine malts. The whiskies get their distinct aroma and body from direct heating distillation, in which the pot stills are heated with finely powdered natural coal - a traditional method that's hardly used today, even in Scotland.

Tasting note: Nose: Pronounced, astonishingly fresh, dry, peat. Palate: Mint creams, then orangey. Finish: After the creaminess, the peat surges back. Clean, sweetish, soft smokiness. Comment: This is a wonderful whisky at 10 Years Old. I love the almost shocking hit of heavy peating. Rating: 9/10.  - Michael Jackson, www.whiskymag.com

One of the most impressive (and affordable) Japanese whiskies to have ever hit the Australian market. "I have been drinking this for a very long time - and still can't remember a bottle that's ever let me down." - Jim Murray.

Nikka Straight from the barrel is no exception. Composed of blended single malts from both the Miyagikyo and Yoichi distilleries along with an element of grain whisky that's all matured in first-fill bourbon casks. Good reviews are not hard to come by, with web based whisky enthusiasts describing this as an excellent value Japanese blend and all round great introduction to the Nikka style. Jim Murray's also a fan, stating "I have been drinking this for a very long time - and still can't remember a bottle that's ever let me down."

Tasting note: [Batch 24J12B] Deep gold / bright copper appearance. The aroma is pristinely clean and reminiscent of some class sherry bottlings, there's suggestions of biscuity malt, vanilla and juicy dried fruits. At the same time it frustrates - even after extended time in the glass it’s shy to reveal better definition. In the mouth, soft, gentle spices unfold a blanket of sweet, nutty, chewy malt and dried fruit flavours. A hint of smoke in here too? Clean, slightly tingly mouth feel as the spices increase, but overall this shows good balance at +50%. Finishes as it began - with the spices more settled and drying as the delicate malt lingers through the aftertaste. 51.4% Alc./Vol.

Previous tastings... [Batch 04J080] Deep, bright gold appearance. Aromas include toasty cereals, straw, cocoa, pear and spices beautifully intertwined. A huge, spicy entry is semi sweet with stewed pear, dried apricot and a chewy texture. Very well balanced at cask strength. Drying pear, spice and vanilla aftertaste. In all a little bit like a rye heavy Bourbon. Certainly one of the most impressive and affordable Japanese whiskies to arrive on the Australian market. 51.4% 94 points

Other Reviews... A high-strength blend that takes no prisoners. The color is full gold and the first thing that hits the nose is a complex mix of restrained smoke (sandalwood, cigar), fennel, and celery before semi-dried tropical fruits and orange peel take over. The palate also shows some of that mango character, but also crisp oak and a burst of sweet powdered spices on the finish. A malt lover’s blend. 92 points - David Broom - Malt Advocate

"One for no age statement naysayers... Eloquent & beautiful." - whiskyadvocate.com

In 2015, Nikka announced they were discontinuing their age statement and No Age Statement (NAS) releases for the Yoichi and Miyagikyo labels and consolidating them into two new NAS versions that differ slightly to the previous versions. Nikka's reasons for the radical new strategy are now familiar. They simply have no old stocks to sell. Decades ago, both local and world demand for Japanese malts was low, so few barrels were being laid down for extended periods. Stefan Van Eycken, writing for nonjatta.com explains "...there were years, at both Yoichi and Miyagikyo distillery, when the barrels laid down for maturation could be counted on the fingers of one hand. The ‘stock shortage’ is not an excuse or a PR stunt – it’s very real. Sources within Nikka have said that it is ‘likely’ that age-statement single malts will be brought back in 5 or 6 years’ time. No official statement to that effect has been made for the simple reason that doing so – in Japan – would be interpreted as a promise (which could come back to haunt them in 6 years’ time)."

The dropping of age statements doesn't always translate into a drop in quality. Early reviews for both releases have been very positive. Evidently, Chief blender Tadashi Sakuma has risen to the challenge of creating a great assemblage from a restricted inventory.

Other reviews... Only a little too much caramel prevents this from a much higher score. So effortlessly delicious, though. 91.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024

One for no age statement naysayers. An eloquent expression of sweet osmanthus, baked lemon, yuzu, violin resin, rich malts, and bonfire aromas on a favorite woolen jumper. It glides across the tongue with sweet barley sugar, but attests to greater depths; grapefruit, spicy ginger, and mandarin developing milk chocolate-coated, candied lemon flavors. A firm finish: green cardamom spices slowly releasing their grip on the front of the palate, leaving clingy vanilla. Unbound by an age statement, it’s a beautiful offering. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Jonny McCormick (Winter 2016)

...Marigold/deep straw color; superb purity. Immediate smells after the pour are grainy, malty, and like brown rice, with background touches of baking spices (allspice, mace), tofu, and soy sauce; secondary inhalations encounter “greener”, more vegetal aromas that eclipse the baking spices. Entry is subtle, keenly spicy (the baking spices make a big return), desert dry, and moderately malty; midpalate features a delightfully and satisfying crisp flavor profile that borders on being astringent and edgy as the maltiness merges nicely with the resiny oak, providing a tightly focused taste experience that’s clean and intensely grainy. Finishes a little too short, deeply malty, and even now a touch peppery. Had the aftertaste not dropped off too abruptly, I’d have given this single malt a fifth rating star. It has a lot going for it. Highly Recommended - spiritjournal.com

Lots of very warm reviews on the blogoshere for this no-age-statement expression of Nikka which reportedly over-delivers for an entry level whisky. Named after the company's founder, Masataka Taketsuru, and aged on average for around 10 years, it includes whiskies from the Miyagikyo & Yoichi distilleries, including malt matured in Sherry casks.

Other reviews... The luxe aroma mixes rich butterscotch and apple sweetness. On the palate, this whisky is light and gentle, interspersing fruit and smoke and finishing with a spark of cinnamon heat. Add a splash of water; recommended for sipping. 43% Alc./Vol.

Bright gold color. Lively, attractive aromas of leather, cedar, sautéed almonds, and raisins with a silky, crisp, dry-yet-fruity medium body and a tingling, long dried fruits, minerals, honeyed tea, and salted caramelized nuts finish. Jim Murray's Japanese Whisky of the Year 2018.

Yet another first for Australia - Nikka decided to add their Coffey Malt to their core portfolio in 2014. It completes the Coffey range, originally launched in September 2012 with the Nikka Coffey Grain. Each offers insight into the whiskies that constitute the base of Nikka’s blends. This edition is produced from 100% malt, though technically it's not a single malt due to its distillation in Coffey stills (Nikka imported two from Scotland in 1963). Scheduled as a European exclusive, we're very fortunate to have received a tiny quantity into Australia.

Tasting note: Brilliant deep gold colour. Semi-sweet aromas of creamy soda, creme caramel, vanilla bean and shortbread followed by flavours of butter menthol lozenge, cream biscuits and an ultra pure, high pitch vanilla bean, dried coconut finish that maintains excellent sweet/dry balance. Creamy soda and bounty bar aftertaste. A gorgeous, one of a kind, melt in your mouth malt that's a must try. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Now a hugely welcome part of the core range, this whisky—made in Coffey stills at the Miyagikyo distillery—uses 100% malted barley as its base. The nose is all tinned peach, tropical fruit juice, and baked banana, with a surprising green celery note, coconut, and sherbet. The palate is silky, with some chocolate, biscuity oak, and orange blossom honey. Water brings those green notes forward to add freshness to the peach cobbler sweetness. The grain revolution builds. 45% Alc./Vol.

Jim Murray's Japanese Whisky of the Year for 2023.

Grain whiskies are almost entirely reserved for the blended whisky market, where the grain component can be thought of as the 'neutral canvas' background. The more robust and flavourful Single Malts represent the colours in the blender's palate. Grain whiskies aren't necessarily bland, but they do tend towards lighter, leaner styles. This is because the raw materials and the equipment used to make grain whisky are different than those found in the production of single malt. In grains, usually unmalted wheat or maize (corn) feature, together with a small amount of 'green' malt (barley which has germinated but not been kilned). Usually about 16% malt is added in order to convert the starches in the other cereals into sugar, so it can be turned into alcohol by the yeast. The distillation process further sets grain whiskies apart: Rather than being pot distilled, they’re produced via column stills. Also known as 'Continuous' or 'Coffey Stills', this revolutionary invention from a French born, Irish raised Dublin Excise Officer, Aeneas Coffey, has forever changed the way most spirits are made. Significantly more efficient than the Pot still, column stills can produce a consistently light bodied and clean spirit to a pre-determined strength.

While the category is rarely marketed, there are several outstanding grain whiskies that are worth seeking out. Nikka's is one, and all the more unusual for being Japanese. Nikka have released a number of single cask Coffey distilled grain whiskies over the last few years. This is a larger scale offering, produced mainly from corn using their continuous Scottish-made Coffey stills at Miyagikyo. Tasted from a 40ml sample, the whisky yields superb scents of vanilla cream combined with hints of ripe pear or dried banana. Second pass finds tea biscuits and shortbread with the creaminess maintained. Silky, almost oily delivery offers semi-sweet Irish pot still-like flavours: vanilla wafer, muesli, then added pepper to finish. Concludes sufficiently fresh, caramelly, vanilla-heavy with shortbread and lingering sugars in the aftertaste. Irish whiskey meets Venezuelan rum. Delicious. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews… I'll just repeat about the finish exactly what I wrote last year... because nothing has changed: it is identical... every year I look at the latest bottling of this astonishing grain, searching for a weakness here, a failing there. But no. Guaranteed consistency: it is like a song you know the words to and can sing along with. I has always linked silk with China... until I found this whisky all those years back. And it is as soft and luxurious now as it has ever been. Wonderful! 95.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2023

...n24 Molten muscovado sugar; t24.5 Soft oils carry the thinned golden syrup aloft. Almost a semi-liqueur, but with that indefineable whiskyness which sets it apart...; f22.5 The slight bitterness of the cask jolts the serenity of the oily sugars; b23.5 whisky, from any part of the globe, does not come more soft or silky than this. 94.5 points - Jim Murray Whisky Bible 2015

...Sweet, with subtle, crisp, nutty oak, then comes fudge, ripe banana, and peach. The overall effect is like eating vanilla ice cream with toffee fudge and hazelnut sprinkles. The structure is thick and physical, the palate sweet and quite fat, with light hints of raspberry, fruit salad. A jag of acidity freshens the delivery on the finish. With water there’s more toffee, and it becomes slightly more yielding, with less oak. For me the gold standard of grain. 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com (Fall 2015) Reviewed by: Dave Broom

"This is not "Japanese Bourbon" or even "Japanese Corn Whiskey." This is quite something...else. There is no age statement, but the benchmark for this whisky is 8-12 years. The profile is carnival candy filled, and while it is slick, it is not sticky sweet on your palate. Some vanilla and cinnamon are added to the flavors found along with honey wine and peaches." 91 points - distiller.com

For their Select Cask series, Paul John in Goa has created a pair of malts finished in different sherry casks. This particular edition was allowed a period in Pedro Ximénez casks, so if you like the thought of dried fruits mixed in with some cakey notes, you should find plenty to like here - starting with the bouquet. Packed with dried peels, raisins, fruit slice and dark chocolate, the palate shares the same appealing bittersweet quality (it's not as sweet as you might anticipate). Fruit mince pie, tangy peels and ginger bread are the keynotes through to the cocoa-laced aftertaste. Trace sulphur too. Adding water tends to flatten the profile, so this is one whisky where its qualities are best uncut. The high ABV boosts the bang for your buck. 48% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the producers... Nose: An attractive honeycombed bourbon with luscious fruitcake, with a light whiff of enticing caramel pudding. Taste: A delightful soft honey with a slight salt-edged barley; an excellent mouthfeel with honeycomb sweetness. Finish: Immensely long, and richly flavoured with dissolving honey, barley, and succulent vanilla. Tasting note: Polished copper. Offers up fruity malt, hints of ginger bread, light cinnamon and vanilla. Similar in many ways to "Edited" but with the oak adding firmness and drying the mid-palate. Fresh and lightly spiced delivery; some nice fruit'n'nut chocolate characteristics feature amid the juicy malt. Excellent balance. 46% Alc./Vol

Other reviews... Paul John is taking its entry into the world of single malt very seriously, and very slowly but surely. We recommend tasting both straight before adding a tiny amount of water (literally a few drops) in order to get the most out of them. The Classic is a little prickly in the opening sniffs including notes of pepper, honey and sponge cake and a mildly acidic volatility; five minutes softens the bouquet considerably and draws out a superb fruity core of peach, light vanilla and dried coconut. Intense, peppery entry; coats the tongue with a slow-motion wave of spicy, semi-sweet, bristling malt. Finish is mildly bittersweet with warming spirit heat, plus vanilla oak input and hints of biscotti; late fruitiness and tingly peppers carrying the aftertaste. Non chill filtered. 55.2.% Alc./vol.

Sharp with lime, grapefruit, and lemon zest that settle down to green fruits, Jell-O, and dry spices. Tasting note: Bold, but not as overtly peaty as the name might suggest. Gentle puffs of smoke come between the honey-soaked barley, giving a Highland Park-esque feel to the nose. Full, vaguely fruity, superbly weighted, effervescent malt - the phenols glaze over the barley rather than smother it. No shortage of flavour. At the finish, an earthy, farmyard-like character is accented, the peat taking on a lanolin-like aspect through the final stages. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... the smoke tries to rule the roost but is not allowed to....melt in the mouth malt: a silky delivery- what else do expect from India? - is shaped again by oak-studded honey... one of the most weighty and chewable Indian whiskies of all time - yet it is not just about peat. Fans of all things peaty will find this difficult to resist. Not only brilliant whisky, but a new bargain in its genre.

Located in the tourist region of Goa, John Distilleries have been producing huge volumes of blended whisky since 1992. Original Choice, one of their top brands, sells over one million cases a month. The Distillery entered the single malt scene in 2008 as a ‘pet project’ that like Amrut before it, has quickly gained world wide attention. Distiller Michael John employs local ingredients, although, the peated releases source peated malt from Scotland. The maturation periods in India are reminiscent of those in many Australian distilleries. After only three years, a hogshead has 150 bottles left in it (compared to around 350 in a Scottish equivalent). Not surprising given that the average temperature in Goa is around 31 degrees celsius.

Paul John's cask strength variations are sold under his "Select Cask" label. The quality is fabulous - so are the prices. We recommend tasting both straight before adding a tiny amount of water (literally a few drops) in order to get the most out of them. The Peated starts out with a lovely sweet, cocoa edge to the bouquet; second pass finds wet wool and barley sugar combining to great effect. Further aeration highlights oatmeal and honey interchanging with earthy peat. A farmyardy aspect follows as lucerne mulch and hints of manure, and later still, cough lozenge and faint citrus. Mouthwatering, sweet entry leads into a superbly integrated, concentrated, peppery profile; Winds up with with Fisherman's friend, liquorice root, dried fig and salivating, creamy malt. Peat lingers in the fade. Complex, poised and powerful, this precocious effort seems to only get better each time you taste it - fans of all things peaty will find it difficult to resist. Not only brilliant whisky, but a new bargain in its genre. 55.5% Alc./Vol.

Peat, biscuit, fir tree sap, oil and fruit cake, a tightly woven fabric, smoke pumped through a mesh of sweet, rich, alcohol sodden raisin. All power to the black fruit bomb. A mouth filling whopper of a whisky, the smoke riding the sweet as it billows up and back, the finish is ever so long, a fragment of cinnamon tempering the sugar. It’s Christmas less the glitz. It’s a winter love bomb, a mulled beauty, a deep and hearted pagan of a drink. Category Winner - worldwhiskiesawards.com

...Earthy notes, with plain chocolate nibs, malt drinks, and a little leather. There’s a subtle smoky air; nothing too astringent or overpowering. "What is Welsh for Wow!?" - Jim Murray

'Myth' is the second whisky in Penderyn's 'Dragon' range of 41% ABV expressions, along with Celt and Legend. This departs from the distillery's commonly found style of ex-Madeira wine cask-finishing, preferencing ex-bourbon and ex red wine casks. There are less pedestrian flavours of melon and green apple suggested through the vanilla and biscuity malt. It is arguably the fruitiest in the collection while remaining a subtle, low-key experience with little to no burn, leaving the impression of a well-made blend. Non chill filtered.

... [+/- 2017 bottling] Not the first time we’re trying this entry-level NAS. Hope they improved it a bit… Colour: straw. Nose: difficult, acidic and full of iron and concrete. Milk, yoghurt, mud, cow stable… Not too sure here… Mouth: better on the palate, with some tropical fruits yet again (much fewer than in the 2007 and 2008 though), probably from fresh bourbon, then some lighter vanilla and touches of barley water. Feels like a blend, with this lightness. Quite some sawdust, not the best part. Finish: medium but a little planky. Flour, tapioca, sawdust… Comments: I had hoped this baby would make it to 80 but the sawdust handicapped it in the end. Good but not quite mythical, I would say. 78 points - whiskyfun.com

Like the other expressions in the series, 'Legend' carries the Red Dragon as a feature. It's the same symbol that appears on the national flag of Wales and the Royal Welsh badge bears the motto, ‘The red dragon inspires action.’ Matured in x Bourbon casks before receiving a further maturation in x Madeira wine casks, this is a whisky of restrained stye, both on the nose and palate. In moments akin to a light grain or Irish blend, there are mere suggestions of tropical fruit and citrus punctuating the soft barley and muesli, augmented by wisps of pepper, while frail notes of honey and melon surface in a clean, crisp finish. Non chill filtered.

This edition was matured in bourbon but finished in Madeira casks, which lends it a honeyed, sweet nose of cream soda, lychee, whole almond, and dried tropical fruit. Smartly, the finishing cask gives a lift but never dominates. This gently smokey Penderyn is finished in ex-peated quarter casks. Jim Murray clearly adores these expressions. Other reviews suggest this to be a contemporary Welsh classic.

Other reviews... [bott code 82144] A quiet smokiness, but nothing understated here, either. A charming minty chocolate acts as a perfect foil for the delicate phenols. Salivating, gristy barley makes an early entrance but the real surprise is the oils which run through the body, giving unusual scope and depth for a Celt; the mid point Demerara sugars are by now crisp and friable, contrasting beautifully with the oils; Long, enigmatic and returning an extra charge of peat smoke for good measure. "A minor classic, it has to be said. And for a three year old, simply ridiculously good." - Jim Murray's Whisky's Bible

After a full maturation in a first-fill bourbon cask, the Pokeno team finished this special limited edition in a barrel sourced from Liberty Brewing which previously contained their fantastic Prohibition Porter. The result is an incredibly smooth and rich malt, with notes of cocoa and chocolate, which combine beautifully with the citrus and vanilla. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... the malt is brittle and profound. In the background though, the pleasant acidic nip of something a little burned... what a delivery! Unique! And truly delicious. Myriad barley tones fizz at the taste buds, ranging from an almost Irish pot still unmalted hardness, through concentrated sweet barley and finally reaching something far more toasty and eye watering. In the meantime, the structure of the whisky itself changes and becomes increasingly oily to the point of outright creaminess... almost like an old-fashioned milk stout... Creamy and complex, it belies its years with an assured performance... A minor classic , it has to be said. And for a three year old, simply ridiculously good. 94.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024

New releases from Pokeno in the North Island of New Zealand have arrived. Already sold out at the distillery, this bottling represents the first in the 'Exploration' series and introduces the native Totara wood, the indigenous tree of Aotearoa. Historically, its hard, straight-grained timber has been used to build homes, carvings, weapons and containers for storing food. When used for maturing whisky, it imparts sweet, creamy notes. The team at Pokeno opted for 200 litre barrels that received a light toast and char. After maturation in first-fill bourbon casks, the whisky was finished in the Totara wood. Founder, Matt Johns describes the result as having a creamy coconut note with sweet-scented sap, ripe white peach and freshly cut wood. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... A blend of whiskies fully matured in first-fill bourbon, oloroso sherry, and Pedro Ximenez sherry casks, all mingled after aging (no age stated). The flipside of the bourbon-barreled expression, with the impact of sherry firmly evident. The blend of oloroso and PX — alongside the bourbon barrels — makes for some added complexity, albeit less clarity. The sherry isn’t as sharp on the nose or the palate as you might expect — particularly with PX in the mix — leading to both aromatics and flavors of Eastern spices, fresh leather, and a pecan note. The finish is surprisingly mild, acknowledging the sherry influence only modestly. Mostly, it’s the citrus that’s endemic to sherry aging that is more muted here than I expected, though that’s not altogether a bad thing. Still, I was expecting to see more power out of this bottling. I sipped on the Origin expression for quite a bit longer. 43% Alc./Vol. - drinkhacker.com

Pokeno Origin Single Malt New Zealand Whisky (700ml)
    NEW ZEALAND
    $109. 99
    Bottle
    $1319.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

The New Zealand scene has gone from just one distillery that closed in 1997 (Willowbank in Dunedin) to over ten small-scale and craft distillers. One new venture, nestled amongst the volcanic mountains and misty valleys of the Waikato region is a family-owned and operated passion project aiming to distill in the style of the finest Speyside malts. And with decades of whisky industry experience, Matthew Johns, who has been associated with some of the biggest names in the world of single malts has Pokeno right on track. Founded in 2017, it is already the largest single malt distillery in the country, handling all aspects of production on-site, including maturation and bottling. It even has its own cooperage. According to some tasters, what's coming out of barrel now resembles Japanese whisky, showing more delicacy than most Scotch, and zero peat. Four whiskies make up the current range. 'Origin' comes aged in ex-bourbon casks, making for a pure, light, breezy, well-rounded whisky with hints of honey drizzled fruits (think dried pear or cantaloupe), followed by suggestions of honey, cream and coconut chocolate through the medium-long finish. 43% Alc./vol. Non-chill filtered.

Other reviews... A nose of cereal bars, honey, flatbread crackers, peppercorn, cinnamon, shelled almonds, and dried grasses. It’s rounded, with good weight and texture, delivering honey, vanilla, apricot, light citrus, fudge, peppercorn, cinnamon, and oak char, with an actively spicy finish. Well-made and a great introductory malt, but this flavor profile positions it in pretty crowded territory, up against numerous similar-tasting bourbon cask-matured single malts. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...most impressive is the cleanliness of the malt; this has been beautifully and carefully made. 92.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024

...Matured in first-fill bourbon barrels. No age statements. A refreshing single malt, it could easily pass for a bourbon barrel-aged Scotch. Light, buttery grains and a pinch of citrus are evident on the fresh nose, and the same follow through on the palate. Almost coming across like a shortbread cookie, the creamy whisky showcases a slightly nutty character that evokes nougat, almond butter, coconut, and again some lemon extract, filtering into the finish. Bright as sunshine, it’s a perfect (if uncomplicated) aperitif. - drinkhacker.com

Santis Malt Dreifaltigkeit Edition Single Malt Swiss Whisky (500ml)
    SWITZERLAND
    $149. 99
    Bottle
    $1799.88 Dozen
    ABV: 52%

'Dreifaltigkeit' means trinity in German, and this whisky apparently gets its name from a local Swiss mountain peak. Reportedly the barley is smoked in multiple ways – first wood-smoked in beech and oak woods, then re-smoked with local peat from the Appenzell Highmoor. It' makes for an experience not all whisky drinkers will appreciate, even some peat freaks. Having said that, an earlier edition was awarded Jim Murray's “European Whisky of the Year” for 2010. Unlike anything from Islay, we'd describe it as 'progressive', even a bit of a one-of-a-kind in its deceptively powerful, intensely smokey-malt profile that evokes bbq grill, bitter herbs, pepper and high-cocoa chocolate. The long, weighty finish is matched by few whiskies: thick with wood smoke, followed by an almost chewy sensation that introduces choc fudge, walnut brownies and hints of dry molasses. Overdone, perhaps, but it grows on you. Seasoned whisky lovers, expect to be surprised and intimidated in equal measure! 52% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... The kind of smokey infusion which just makes you purr with happiness. One of my favourite peat styles: a kind of mix between cattle sheds and bacon frying in the pan... Thick, chewy and frankly magnificent... such a long finale. The smoke pulses, the spices tingle and the fruit allays with the barley and the growing oak for a deeply pleasing sweet-dry interplay... Santis back to its most brilliant... If you see a bottle grab it and ask questions later. 95 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024

...Peat cut from the moors in Appenzell is used to make peated malt that is then matured in beer casks. The nose has rich woodsmoke, leather, charred oak, bruised orchard fruit, and a mild pepperiness. Unsweetened chocolate, dark fruit, clove, and ginger lead to an intense spicy peak, diluting to leave hazelnut ganache, chocolate brownie, and a gentle smoky character. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com

[circa 2021 bottling] We're in Appenzell and unless you're a native German speaker, please try to say 'Dreifaltigkeit'. Bravo! Indeed that means 'trinity' in German. This was matured in old beer casks, a typical set-up at Säntis. Colour: deep gold/amber. Nose: with bags of pencil shavings and tons of pinewood chips, this should work well as a spread over your barbecued ribs. Seriously, I think this is awesome, totally deviant in a great way, and more and more on smoked and grilled bacon. Spectacular, I can't wait to check what will happen once water's been added. With water: same but with even more pinewood. A little aquavit, perhaps, Schinken häger… ever heard of  Schinken häger? Mouth (neat): total extreme fun. Tons of smoked bacon, litres of Jägermeister and Fernet Branca, and this feeling of drinking sauna oil. With water: more tar, myrtle liqueur (first time I'm finding this much myrtle), salty bacon… Finish: very long. Perhaps a tad too long in fact, you'll need a break before you pour another whisky. Yes, of course this is whisky. Comments: utter fun! Isn't this Whiskyfun? 86 points - whiskyfun.com

Santis Malt Sigel Edition Single Malt Swiss Whisky (500ml)
    SWITZERLAND
    $124. 99
    Bottle
    $1499.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Other reviews... It is well known that I am no advocate of beer barrel matured whisky, not least because the bitterness of the hops can cause havoc with the overall balance. Santis, though, are in a league of their very own - especially when it appears to create a creamy hop-less stout like this with sugars appearing from every angle. 92 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024

Why is it that so many great beer-producing European nations, many of them with Germanic roots, didn't progress to whisky making? Appenzeller brewery makes this malt using old beer casks, and they have softened the edges of the malt and given it a liquid honey frame around which woody-earthy notes and unripe dates create an intriguing mix. A long, long way from the Alps to the Scottish Highlands, but a lofty malt nevertheless. [2011 bottling] 80 points -whiskyadvocate.com

Other reviews... Such an attractive, seductive nose... the fruit is so delicate it seems the oak may break through any moment. Or a rush of intense malt might happen along. But it doesn't... a sublime redcurrant freshness to that coats the palate. Muscovado sugars act as an anchor keeping the barley, fruit and charming oak in place... unquestionably the most elegant malt I have tasted from this distillery. The perfect pre-prandial whisky, even when given the full Murray method of tasting, its growth in the glass always remains studied and perfectly balanced. Such charm. 94 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024

Made from Alpine water and barley harvested from one of Europe’s highest growing areas, this was double matured in beer casks and red wine barrels. Spicy and fruity aromas, with apple, cranberry, allspice, nutmeg, cinnamon, and roasted chestnut. Mouth-coating, with bright apple flavors, cherry, malt, and pepper, then showing its darker side with hints of dark toffee, chocolate, blackberry, and leather. 89 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Santis Malt Alpstein XIX Edition Single Malt Swiss Whisky (500ml)
    SWITZERLAND
    $174. 99
    Bottle
    $2099.88 Dozen
    ABV: 48%

Part of the distillery's flagship series, Alpstein comes matured in a range of casks, varying with each release. XIX started life in x-beer barrels followed by a sherry cask finish. Aged for a total of seven years, these limited editions are released in runs of around 2200 bottles. 48% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Fabulous sherry trifle on the nose and a marvelously confident delivery makes for a storming start to this flavoursome malt. Indeed, despite the healthy sherry influence on the delivery, the malt makes its presence felt in both the flavour and texture. However, the bitterness on the finish, almost rubbery at times, compromises the overall balance. That said, the nose and delivery combo is sublime. 86.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024

[IV Edition tasted 2013] Whisky Advocate is moving out into the unknown, turning over the rocks and discovering beautiful and unfamiliar creatures like this one. In tiny distilleries in Switzerland, Sweden, and, er, Swansea, they're throwing the rule book up in the air and creating new whiskies based on how it falls. This has spent four years in a beer barrel and then a year in a port cask, and it's fabulous. Think licorice, aniseed, and cherry-flavored soda. Then add cream, fruit…and yowza! 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Shinshu Mars Distillery Maltage "Cosmo" Wine Cask Finish Blended Malt Japanese Whisky (700ml)
    JAPAN
    $199. 99
    Bottle
    $2399.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Famous as the country’s highest distillery, Shinshu Mars has drawn comparison with Scotland's Dalwhinnie. They offer blends as well as their own Japanese whiskies under various names including 'Komagate', 'Iwai', 'Mars' and more. It gets confusing, but what’s clear is they set a high standard for most of the liquid they bottle. Yet another sub-label in Shinshu's portfolio is the ‘Cosmo' range, named after a mountain in Japan's Central Alps nearby the distillery. Featuring their own malts blended with whiskies from undisclosed Scottish sources, this limited edition was extra-seasoned in red wine casks for a year before bottling. Boasting a gorgeous ruby red colour to prove it, expect ripe berry characteristics with vanilla and cinnamon flavours and a mildly tannic finish. 43% Alc./Vol. Bottled in 2020.

    ABV: 40%
High up in Miyata village on Kuyshu Island is the Shinshu distillery (aka "Mars"), founded in 1985 by Hombo Shuzo Ltd, a producer of shochu since 1872. Shinshu’s whisky is distilled only during the island's harsh winters. In operation from 1985-1992 and then 2011 to present, this is actually Shuzo's third domestic distillery. The previous have been the Yamanashi Distillery (1960-1969) and the Mars Kagoshima Distillery (1978-1984).

Iwai Tradition is a malt and grain blend described by thejapanesewhiskyreview.com as "...a great session whisky."

Tasting note: Bronze gold colour. Soft aromas of ginger biscuit, rice pudding, vanilla and dry grass followed by delicate flavours of digestif biscuit, light cinnamon and vanilla. Suggestions of ovaltine and cigar box in the aftertaste. Crisp and slightly short to finish. Easy drinking. 40% Alc./Vol.

    $2399.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42%
‘Cosmo’ (which refers to a mountain near the distillery), is a relatively recent label for this producer. New for 2019 comes a blended malt composed of the distillery's own spirit as well as Scotch malt whisky imported in bulk, with the final combination finished in ex-Manzanilla sherry casks. Light and fresh like Finos, Manzanilla sherries are aged close to the coast in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Spain. They're typically bone dry styles with a salty tang.

Notes from the bottlers... this builds on the soft and smooth mouthfeel of standard Cosmo, adding aromas of dried fruit, brown sugar, and maple syrup. Chocolate and coconut on the palate, with a slight bitterness. 42% Alc./Vol.
