2008 Signatory Vintage Exclusive Selection Ink #4 Collection Single Cask Deanston 14 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Another European label that's part of the INK #4 series, selected from Signatory Vintage's warehouses exclusively for French retailer, Le Comptoir Irlandais. Deanston is a relative newbie, established in 1965 and positioned in the south of the Highlands in a former cotton weaving factory bordering the River Teith. This young venture wants to be traditional and prides itself on ancestral methods and local ingredients. Fermentation is particularly slow. It takes one hundred hours to develop fresh, fruity and gently honeyed notes that sometimes acquire a gingery/grassy character. Organically grown barley is increasingly preferred. 15% of production is used for singles, the rest for blends, liqueurs and whisky creams. This edition was full-term matured in first fill sherry butt #900079. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: lively, notes of toast, cereals, malty and spicy aromas, fine and elegant oak. Mouth: very round in the mouth, the barley stands out clearly. Finish: thick and cereal.

2013 Signatory Vintage Exclusive Selection Ink #4 Collection Single Cask Linkwood 8 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 52%

Founded in 1821, Linkwood is located in Elgin in the Moray region of Speyside. It participated in the development of many blends including Johnnie Walker, before being put on hold between 1985 and 1990. With few official bottlings to its credit, it's independent like Signatory who pick up the slack. Typically a deliciously fruity, textural malt, this youthful edition was selected for the French retailer, Le Comptoir Irlandais. Finishing in second-fill sherry cask #112 adds another layer of interest. 52% Alc./Vol. Non chill-filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: very lively and full of character, on spices, then floral, herbaceous, cereal notes, lots of freshness, fruits from the orchard. Palate: all in balance and power, fresh barley, tangy fruits (Granny Smith apple), pastry spices. Finish: fresh and fiery.

2014 Signatory Vintage Islay Selection Bunnahabhain Staoisha 7 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $140. 00
    Bottle
    $1680.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Two hogsheads make up this selection from French retailer, La Maison du Whisky: No's 10591 and 10609, sourced from an Islay producer best known for its unpeated distillate. Despite being founded in 1881, the first peated Bunnahabhain was not released until 2004 (a six year old nicknamed Moine, Gaelic for ‘peat’). Named after the loch located just a short distance from the distillery, Staoisha is Bunnah's foray into the extra heavily peated category. Generally the realm of independents, these typically open with a delicate and salty maritime kind of smokiness that can be expressed as oysters, lemon juice and kippers before moving on to a more dense, earthy peat on the palate, sometimes complexed by floral, fruity, vanilla and aniseed notes. 46% Alc./Vol. Probably unchill-filtered, though not stated on the label.

2009 Signatory Vintage The Un-Chillfiltered Collection Glendullan 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $94. 99
    Bottle
    $1139.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Glendullan is the name of the distillery, but its production is better known as a brand: 'The Singleton'. Often considered as a recruitment malt in the industry - that is, one for beginners to try before heading into more assertive styles - its approachability has resulted in massive sales growth, recently tempered, but still strong. Long fermentations are responsible for what can be a relatively green and grassy distillate. This expression from Signatory was drawn from a pair of hogsheads in mid 2022. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

    $2040.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

A seaside distillery and one of Dewar's five malt distilleries, Macduff is located in a fishing port of the same name next to the Moray Firth. The distillery was closed for part of 2022 for upgrades to the distilling equipment. While it's too early to tell if there will be a change of style, keep an eye out for pre-renovation bottlings like this. Scotchwhisky.com comment, "The character is nutty (slightly sulphury at new make stage), with quick mashing, short fermentation and cold condensers. It is this last technique which adds weight to the spirit. It could well be that the kink in the lyne arm helps create just enough reflux to contribute a balancing fruitiness." When mature, it's most commonly found as a middle-ager with the house style tending towards fruity, malty sweetness.  Bottled in 2021 from a first-fill sherry butt, cask #900345 was sourced from the Signatory Vintage Company by French retailer, Le Comptoir Irlandais as part of their limited edition 'Ink' series. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: fine and balanced on a classic Sherry style: fruity and spicy. Palate: a Sherry with lots of fruit (candied citrus fruits) and spices. Finish: chocolatey.

Signatory Vintage The Un-Chillfiltered Collection Edradour Red Label French Exclusive 10 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $150. 00
    Bottle
    $1800.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Drier-styled Oloroso malt with maturity beyond its years. One cask for France only.

Probably decanted from a single cask in 2020, like its sister bottling 'Ballechin', we can't say if we'll be able to source this particular expression again. The stunning old-oak-to-treacle colour promises a genuine sherry kick. As with the distillery's equivalents, you will need to allow breathing time to penetrate through the balsamic and leather opening notes. Once at the heart of the bouquet, there's a generous dose of dark chocolate, walnut, candied orange and pickled ginger-like aromas that follow in a full-bodied delivery of dates, prunes, dark chocolate, leather, bitter peel and old liquorice strap. Mild sulphur adds rusticity without diminishing from the experience. A single ice cube or a few drops of water resolve any prickles and accent the sweeter dried fruit notes. Too much and the profile falls flat. Tasted uncut, the flavours are well-defined, mature for its age and in a style that could be mistaken for quality XO Armagnac - that makes sense given the French connection and their huge appetite for sherried Aberlours. Both offer similar pleasures. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Bottled for the French retailer, La Maison du Whisky. Cask number not stated.

Signatory Vintage The Un-Chillfiltered Collection Ballechin Black Label French Exclusive 10 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $160. 00

    $1920.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

When Edradour was bought in 2002, Andrew Symington called on the services of Iain Henderson, the former director of Laphroaig for the creation of a second, very peaty malt. Given the name of Ballechin, it employs barley at 50ppm phenols, a rate comparable to the smokiest malts from Islay. Launched in 2003, it's sold as a yearly vintage in limited runs of 6000 bottles and has proven itself suited to maturation in a wide range of cask types. Exclusive to the French market, only a few dozen bottles of this ten year old oddity have made their way to our shelves. Released in 2020 and drawn from a first-fill sherry butt, it's a slightly different beast to Edradour's official 'green label' expression which is predominantly Bourbon matured. Followers of the brand will also note a sophisticated new-look label. Anticipate smoky and fragrant peat, some minerality, smoked herbs and an intense, earthy peat on the palate mingling with nutty oloroso, cooked lemons and pepper. 46% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

2008 Signatory Vintage Mannochmore 13 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

An amber-gold coloured Mannochmore from a pair of hogsheads. At the time of writing, there's very little from this Diageo underdog available. At the best of times, Mannochmore remains one of Speyside's rarer offerings, defined by its distinctive lighter style. Founded in 1971 in the heart of whisky country, south of Elgin in Morayshire, the majority of Mannochmore's output is used in Diageo's finest blends, making single malt releases and in particular single cask releases very obscure. Despite its lack of public exposure the distillery has produced minor cult releases such as the 'Cu Dhub' and the 'Black Whisky'. Expect this to be quite spicy and zesty. 43% Alc./Vol.

2009 Signatory Vintage Exclusive Selection Ink #2 Collection Single Cask Auchroisk 11 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $150. 00
    Bottle
    $1800.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

French retailer, Le Comptoir Irlandais selected this first-fill hogshead because it was "atypical and relatively complex while retaining the finesse specific to Auchroisk" (or "OH-thrusk" in Gaelic). The amber gold colour is advanced by a first fill maturation. The aroma opens sharp and slightly green, relaxing over time and becoming almost rum-like in its vanilla-malt nose-feel; shows a nice transition of oak to barley with notes of tea biscuits and emerging orchard fruits (pears / ripe apples). Oak creams up the mid-palate with an injection of off-dry, Bourbon richness. Not often a fan of this distillery which is frequently over-spicy, 'grassy' and off-key, especially in youth. This one has achieved balance early. While it remains softly spoken, it's unquestionably one of the better Auchroisks to date. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... On the nose, very grassy, dry, floral. It is direct on aromas of vanilla and very fresh green tea. It's classy, precise, atypical. The palate is still herbaceous, almost oriental with honeyed flavors that complement very spicy notes, a pastry aspect in a second time around more vanilla and almond notes. The finish is fine and spicy, pastry again. Atypical, excellent, a real great tasting experience on an unusual Speysider.

2010 Single Malts of Scotland Reserve Cask Ardlair 11 Year Old Parcel No.8 Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

More and more peated whisky fans are working out that if you are looking for 'peaternatives' to combat rising Islay prices, Ardmore is a go-to distillery. What most won't know is that for a portion of the year, Ardmore produces unpeated whisky too. These are sold under the name of 'Ardlair'. Being long time admirers of Ardmore, we're fascinated to see how it shows. This bottling from reputable independents as part of their Reserve Cask series was matured in a trio of barrels until it was bottled in 2022 at 48%. Non chill filtered.

Smoky Scot Caol Ila 5 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $74. 99
    Bottle
    $899.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Smoky Scot is from Aceo Ltd, an independent bottler that took over Murray McDavid from Mark Reynier when Bruichladdich was sold off. This super affordable Islay whisky is a Caol Ila matured in bourbon casks for five years. Pale straw gold. Lifted whiffs of oily malt, tar, chimney soot, baked fruits and vanilla. Air contact adds a little seashore / maritime freshness. Entry is oily, fruity and richly phenolic evoking quality mezcal with flavours of char grilled pineapple, dried herbs, lanolin and sooty peat. Big and bold, the finish adds enough oak and spice to balance. Packs loads of distillery character. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Aceo are the current owners of Murray McDavid, so in a way, this is a wee peater by Murray McDavid, said to be only five (and therefore no ages are stated). Colour: pale white wine. Nose: pristine lime juice, oysters, crabs, kelp, light ashes and charcoal, in a very Coal-Ila manner. Elastoplast and fresh almonds in the background, which is even more CI in my book. Mouth: pure salty lemon juice, with less smoke than on the nose, but with more seawater, oysters, seaweed and all that. Finish: pretty long, still pure, still on a lot of seawater, anchovies in brine, and even with olives, which always puts me on cloud nine. Comments: we just did a mezcal session the other day, and we now realise how close to each other both spirits can be. I mean, some Caol Ilas and some mezcals. Brilliant wee drop, absolutely love it, even if there are zillions of very similar casks snoozing away in the centre of Scotland. 88 points - whiskyfun.com

A South Star mystery bottling. By Highland standards, elegant and feminine. Subtle fragrances of dried grass, orchard fruits, vanilla and apple pie. The palate takes a slightly more cereal-oatmeal-porridge trajectory; it's nicely weighted too. The finish is crisp, brisk and delicately fruity. 2148 bottles available. 48% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... Aromas of dried oranges and tobacco fill the nose, complemented by notes of dark chocolates, roast hazelnuts, walnuts and sticky toffee throughout the palate.

South Star Spirits is a new company backed by four whisky enthusiasts who are also building a distillery. In the meantime, they're launching the brand with these indie expressions. Like the rest of the range, the Speyside expression was matured in ten first-fill hogsheads. It sports stewed fruits, hints of vanilla and bubblegum on the nose and a nicely rounded, fruity mouthfeel making for a pleasant if somewhat predictable Speysider. The finish is lightly spiced with cinnamon, white pepper and salted crackers. 2148 bottles available. 48% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Fruity, floral & citrusy lemon slice. Palate: Syrupy toffee with a touch of saltiness. Finish: Cinnamon on baked apples and pears.

The source isn't stated, but it tastes like Caol Ila: The nose offers lashings of maritime peat reek, dappled with salt'n'pepper and refreshed by a vibrant, citrus lift. Independent / private bottlings of Springbank are not common. We have snapped up a tiny volume of this all-natural 21 year old that looks to have been destined for a group of whisky aficionados in the Netherlands. Described as "clean, malty, peaty and creamy" by one taster, its bright gold colour suggests Bourbon maturation or possibly refill sherry. The outturn was 288 bottles at 49.8% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered. Collectable.

A distillery unknown to most, with the majority of its produce destined for blends. Strathmill eventuated in the whisky boom of the late 19th century, where almost thirty malt whisky distilleries were founded (some familiar names include, Balvenie, Dalwhinnie, Aberfeldy and Glen Moray). It commenced as a Flour and Corn mill factory in 1823 which was converted under the name Glenisla-Glenlivet. In 1895 the gin producers W. & A. Gilbey bought the distillery and changed the name to Strathmill ('the mill in the long valley'), which today falls under the Diageo umbrella.

Today, the malt supplies blends like J&B with very few single malts surfacing. Independent bottlers are the main source for malt fans to sample its delights, which have been referred to by the likes of whisky writer Michael Jackson as "the whisky's answer to orange Muscat". More recently, various bottlings of Strathmill have received ratings as high as 96 points by Jim Murray.

1965 Wu Dram Clan Invergordon 55 Year Old Cask Strength Single Grain Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Lowlands, SCOTLAND
    $1999. 00
    Bottle
    $23988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

An exceptionally old Invergordon bottled by Wu Dram Clan - three whisky fanatics who happened to meet on Islay and formed a lifelong friendship. The group consists of Takesado from Japan, Boris from Munich, and Sebastian from the Black Forest, Germany. Each of the founding members brings a unique skill set to the table and all adhere to the philosophy that what matters entirely is the content of the bottle. Single grain enthusiasts will already know Invergordon as one of the big names in the category. Established in 1960 and owned by Whyte & Mackay, it goes into a number of blends throughout Scotland. Aged for five and a half decades in an ex-Bourbon hogshead, this super-old single cask expression was distilled December 1965 and bottled June 2021 yielding 228 bottles at a natural strength of 40% abv. Grain whisky at this age can be an amazing experience - a fact that more and more whisky lovers are beginning to cotton on to. We have a tiny number of the original consignment allocated for Australia.

Other reviews... This IS cask strength and most probably the oldest grain whisky ever bottled (ready to be proven wrong). These people are crazy. Colour: full gold. Nose: it needs to be said that the 1960s Invergordons do rule supreme over my 'grainy list' (which doesn't quite exist in real life but there). This is rather a kind of complex soup, with bits of artichoke, asparagus, leek or cauliflower, all that seasoned with whisky and triple-sec as well as a little miso and umami sauce. A little crushed overripe banana too, perhaps manioc, celeriac, parsnips… It's getting fractal, in fact, just wait and many tinier aromas will start to parade under your nostrils. Mouth: salty and slightly varnishy at first, with some bouillons, then rather on seasoned fruit juices. I was about to mention sweet guacamole. Perhaps not. Banana chutney, mango chutney, more bouillon… The body's obviously a notch thin(nish) but in no way does it become frustrating. Drops of banana wine, mullein syrup, woodruff syrup… Finish: short, naturally, but once again that isn't frustrating at all. Sweet teas, vanilla-ed rooibos, a tiny touch of liquorice wood, perhaps a few mirabelles… Once again a faint varnishy return in the aftertaste, which is typically 'grain whisky' in my book. Comments: I'll say it, I liked the Cameronbridge rather better, but I find it crazy that this imperilled masterpiece was still alive, and rather beautifully so. An ode to time. 89 points - whiskyfun.com

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Very bright and gentle. The generic coconut notes seem to have evaporated after all these years, here I find more ripe bananas, tinned pineapples and guavas, with marzipan and fresh citrus. Minty notes. Natural vanilla. Hints of cellulose varnish, nicely integrated. Hints of fragrant sandalwood and caramelized nuts. There’s a great rummy side to it as well. Palate: Lacking the thick, creamy side that you often get in grains, but not weak. Fresh citrus, dried ginger, still some pineapple notes. Pleasant sour notes which make it brighter. Hints of ‘pencil liqueur’ (let’s hope it doesn’t exist), which means you get an oaky touch but in a sweet and rounded way. Almonds and a hint of white pepper in the end. Finish: Surprisingly long, with bananas, nutmeg and a pinch of pepper. This is a surprisingly fresh senior, kind of a rum and grain mix-up. The underlying sweetness keeps the wood at bay and brings along a Caribbean character.

2011 Single Malts of Scotland Reserve Cask Glencadam 10 Year Old Parcel No.6 Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $130. 00
    Bottle
    $1560.00 Dozen

A combination of five casks bottled at 48%, Glencadam's fruity distillate typically has a little more texture than others, which will work well at a higher ABV. Expect a floral nose including notes of tinned pears and cream. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Simply a really good distillate. This is all about the spirit, not about casks and maturation. I sometimes crave for this kind of simple pleasures. I’d keep this aside until the summer returns. - whiskynotes.be/

Sourced from one of Scotland’s most prestigious Highland distilleries, this soft, sweet and gentle malt aims to capture the hallmarks of a classic Speysider. Slightly lean and 'acidic', the aromas suggest green apples with a grassy / white pepper edge developing malt richness over time. There's a subtle peat input too, in the form of distant wood smoke that carries through to the palate; Crisp and green, reflecting the nose, the malt takes on a biscuity character, like black pepper water crackers. The finish is lively and warming, but adding water improves the balance. A drier aperitif style that drinks like a full-bodied blend. Re-fill bourbon casks, un-coloured and non-chill-filtered. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... An elegant and lightly smoked malt which would double either as a pre-prandial dram or one for the wooden hill. 89 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2021

Notes from the bottlers... Colour: Golden shimmer. Nose: Zesty lemon, creamy vanilla fudge, subtle mint and jasmine blossom. Palate: A silky texture exuding barley sugar and hazelnut, livened with cinnamon.  Finish: Concluding with malt biscuit and black pepper.

This has certainly got our attention. Ever since tasting several magnificent young cask strength Glenrothes we’ve been on the look out for more hoping to repeat the experience. Credential-wise, this is as close as we’ve got: from a Sherry butt. 607 bottles produced. We have a very limited number on offer at direct import pricing.

Tasting note: Piercing alcohol and cheesy / peppery opening whiffs; aeration picks up the sweetness as boiled lollies, caramel fudge, dark chocolate, vanilla. The sort of delivery that will sort the men from the boys: Achingly intense bittersweetness amid flashes of caramel fudge and butterscotch. Bitter cocoa aftertaste. Dilution will be essential for most. Water draws out attractive aromas and flavours of red apple and hay bail. 64.3% Alc./Vol.

"A beautiful and satisfying malt on a great many levels." 94 points. - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2021

Yet again the quality of Highland Park's distillate is demonstrated, with no sherry needed in support. The succulence of recent cask strength equivalents is almost matched in this 46% bottling, only delivered in a more silky, elegant fashion. As usual, honey-drizzled malt is the aromatic keynote, balanced by citrus blossom, spiced pears and a twang of peel freshness. It comes together beautifully on the palate, with just the right degree of spice to firm up the honeyed middle, while the way in which beeswax teases and weaves through the crisp, salt and pepper finish is almost magical - and possibly unique to this distillery. Puffs of chimney soot complete the picture, extending the length and leaving you with an indelible sense of 'Orkneyness'. An obvious bargain in its category, Rattray may or may not be able to maintain this exceptional age / price ratio in future bottlings - possibly why it's the only one in the 'Cask Series' labelled as a limited edition. Grab it while you can. Drawn from ex-bourbon barrels and bottled at 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews… Acacia honey and marmalade topping on a very malty field. Holds its age sublimely... Exceptionally clean on both delivery and follow through... Incredibly long spice fade with sharp barley hanging on to its coat tails. The most gentle smoke makes a late yet courteous entry. Beautiful and satisfying malt on a great many levels. 94 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2021

...A single malt. Indeed, in theory, this could as well be the much lighter Scapa. What’s reassuring is that this was ‘Created to celebrate the Neolithic folklore of Orkney’. Are they this old-fashioned up there? Colour: white wine. Nose: a fresher style again, closer to the wash and to the earth, with these medicinal touches again, clay and chalk, beach sand, seaweed, grass smoke, roots (gentian!) and lemon peel. I don’t know any whisky enthusiast who wouldn’t like this. Not this humble taster, for sure. Mouth: this is very smart. Perfect coastal/grassy smokiness, some bitter herbs, lemon peel, fresh walnuts, and once again hints of artichoke. A lot of bitter citrus too, and even a wee touch of sea salt. Very good. Finish: quite long, salty and grassy, with more fresh walnuts. Comments: I’m sorry but it’s the Viking Pride, only with rather less cask influence. And I don’t think it’s very expensive (no it’s not) But could it be Scapa? Nah, it ought to be the other one… 88 points. - Serge Valentin, whiskyfun.com

"The obliteration is total. Only the name remains." So ends the story of Stronachie, a distillery which rose out of the wilderness in the 1890s. Set in a desolate glen on the Perth-Kinross border it stood between bleak hills on an isolated road that toiled its way through the Ochill mountains. Stronachie Distillery produced a traditional Highland-style whisky until 1928 and during its four decades of production A.D. Rattray Ltd represented the brand in Scotland. Rattray is proud to revive the Stronachie name and reproduce this spirit of another time. To replicate the whisky, a bottle of original Stronachie 1904 was purchased at auction - one of only four bottles left in existence. A small sample was drawn, then samples of many Highland malt whiskies were compared to the original Stronachie. Finally, the remote and high altitude Benrinnes was chosen.

Tasting note: Many, many very positive user reviews on the web for this pale gold, Bourbon cask matured dram. The nose is pristinely clean with malt and vanilla opening sniffs followed by oatmeal biscuit, cocoa and dried fruits. Light and easy on entry, building concentration and balance through the mid palate with lovely vanilla malt and honeyed notes framed by spicy oak. Ends dry, mildly fruity and soft. Eminently drinkable. You can understand why this has developed such a loyal following. 43% Alc./Vol.

A.D. Rattray customer review... A quite outstanding 10 y.o. Speyside. I don't remember how I 'found ' Stronachie but boy am I glad I did. For it is simply the best 10 y.o. I have ever tasted, and is in my top five whiskies of all time. I am a tour guide for the American market and visit a lot of distilleries all over Scotland, so although not 'an expert' I have learnt a lot in the last six years. I have repeat ordered this whisky more times than any other and all friends and others who have tasted it agree with my praise of it. I am just going to order another couple of bottles (one as a thank you present).
Finally thank you to A D Rattray for your unstinting quest for perfection (someone has to do it after all!) and thank you to Benrinnes Distillery for producing (and of course all the other distilleries in Scotland) such a wonderful nectar.
My observation on Stronachie: Light , sweet, malty, amazingly smooth with a finish that lingers gently and helps to set you up for the next one.

Rattray's "Cask Collection" series, whether from a barrel, a hogshead or a butt, represent single cask whiskies made available in extremely limited quantities, often no more than a couple of hundred bottles for each cask. Distilled in 1995 and matured in a Bourbon hogshead, this highly unusual Macallan was bottled in 2015 at natural strength. Indie Macallan bottlings aren't common, especially single barrel, non-chill filtered, straight from the cask expressions. Total outturn for this A.D. Rattray release was 310 bottles.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Soft and rounded with honey, oranges, homemade marmalade, fruit gums. Palate: Exceptionally smooth and balanced. Sweet fruit and milk chocolate with a creamy finish. Conclusion: The smoothest and finest spirit there is…

Note: This has some lifting to the front label on the tin.

Yet another independent bottler hits Australian shores. Founded by Andrew Dewar Rattray in 1868, A D Rattray began trading as an importer of French wines, Italian spirits and olive oil. More importantly, however, the company also established itself as a specialist in the field of blending and storage of malt and grain whiskies.

After several changes in ownership, the company returned to the family and is presently owned by Mr Tim Morrison, previously of Morrison Bowmore Distillers and fourth generation descendant of Andrew Dewar Rattray. The company’s resurgence came about in 2002 with the bottling of a ‘new’ Stronachie 12yo. In April 2004, using his extensive knowledge and expertise in the whisky industry, Mr Morrison then bottled a selection of his own handpicked stock of whiskies for market release and the A D Rattray Cask Collection was born.

The "Cask Collection" series, whether from a barrel, a hogshead or a butt, represent single cask whiskies made available in extremely limited quantities, often no more than a couple of hundred bottles for each cask.

In this example, the whisky is a very youthful Craigellachie, but don't let the age put you off. Young whisky, particularly at natural strength can offer a dazzling expression of distillery character. Several 6-7 year old Glenrothes we've tasted have been nothing short of extraordinary. Drawn from a Sherry butt, just 704 bottles are on offer. At this direct import pricing the pedigree and value for money are equally hard to resist. According to A.D. Rattray, expect " Creamy toffee, chocolate caramel and walnuts with an exceptionally long finish for a young cask."58% Alc./Vol.

Plans for their new Glasgow-based distillery were approved in 2014. Our current shipment focusses on Rattray's critically acclaimed 'Casks of Scotland' series, each assembled from up to twenty casks from the one distillery and bottled non chill filtered.

Tasting note: [15ml sample] Ex-bourbon barrel matured though some ex-sherry hogsheads are reportedly in the mix. Peated to 35ppm. Pure, bright amber-gold colour. Unashamedly Islay with semi-sweet, sooty peat complexed by suggestions of orange cake, cough lozenge and hints of smoked fish. Later passes add banana cake to the medley. A concentrated, medium dry, spicy profile features sooty malt and vanilla with some apparent sherry influence towards the finish as this gets more dried fruit-like. Great staying power with Fisherman's Friend carrying the aftertaste. A sit-back-and-relax Islay treat. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

...A.D. Rattray! Glad to meet one of their recent bottlings, I had thought they were, well, gone. Or busy with the Outer-Mongolian market. We had an early batch of their Cask Islay in 2011, and thought it was pretty good (WF 83). Colour: white wine. Nose: reeks of young Caol Ila, which can’t be bad news. Apples, garden bonfire, seawater, whelks, oysters, fresh almonds, and lemons. There. Mouth: purrfekt, with some impeccable ashy smoke (very CI indeed) and more almonds, lemons, apples, and those tiny green crabs that people would rather throw into wild broths and soups. Oh and apples, naturally. Okay, I had mentioned apples before. Finish: rather long, very ashy, kippery, and with apples and lemons in the aftertaste. Comments: a great batch despite the youth and the (relative) simplicity. Not much depth, but all the rest is perfect. Welcome back, A.D. Rattray! 84 points - whiskyfun.com

Tasting note: [20ml sample] Quite sublime and nothing short of text book in its sumptuous waxy-crayon / fruity-honeyed bouquet that also hints at citrus blossom, beeswax and ripe apricot. Melt in your mouth texture with a delivery fanning out like a peacock's tail in a slow motion wave of honey, beeswax, apple pie and floral-citrus notes. Seamless, perfectly weighted whisky. 'Port Charlotte' was first produced at Bruichladdich in 2001 making this distillation from November 2002 some of the oldest ever released. The cask was laid down by Mr. Tsuta himself and is not a brokered cask. The whisky has picked up a beautiful level of sweetness over time, that combined with the peat makes for a sublime Islay experience.

Tasting note: [20ml sample] Deep and complex, fizzing with freshness and intensity on the nose evoking smoked fish, bbq fuel, cheese rind and candle wax overlaying apple and vanilla-laced barley. A sweet cascade of creamy malt, honey and ash over the tongue; melting Fishemeran’s Friend lozenge, salted crackers and smokey vanillas with touches of lanolin trailing through the aftertaste. Acorn are another independent bottler who should be on every serious whisky lover's shortlist. Operating from Ikebukuro, Tokyo, the owner, Mr. Seishi Tsuta begun his project after working for Oddbins wine auctions in London throughout the 70s and 1980s, followed by another ten years in Tokyo working for a wine and whisky specialist. Early releases under the Acorn label included single cask Lagavulins and Port Ellens. These were followed by a steady output that's been consistently first rate. Preservation of distillery character remains key to the company's philosophy, never allowing the cask to dominate the spirit. We're fortunate to be able to offer these very limited single cask expressions sourced from some of Scotland’s top distilleries, each selected by one of Australia's finest whisky bars.

Single cask, cask strength Mortlachs are getting increasingly rare, with indies leading the charge. Whisky writer, Dave Broom describes the distillery's main claim to fame (production wise) as "...the home of the most fiendishly complex distillation regime in Scotland". Worm tubs combined with a sophisticated partial-triple distillation and adherence to very traditional practices yields meatier, richer, darker flavours. Always on the heavier end of the Speyside scale, this one was matured in an ex- bourbon cask.

Tasting note: [Cask #7209] Perfect gold. You could sniff this for hours... Light beeswax before entering cream-tea-biscuit territory on the nose with brief air contact inviting a fruity aspect: Ripe bananas and pineapple through to poached pears and cream with one of the softest nose-feels imaginable. You barely notice the spirit kick as the malt floods the mouth. Beeswaxy on entry, then superbly fresh, fruity and tangy through the later stages. Finish highlights the oily malt, while the aftertaste turns waxy, peppery with lingering dried apricots. It's slightly let down by the length, otherwise fabulous all-round. If you like Clynelish you'll love this. 55.6% Alc./Vol.

Youthful but already clearly Caol Ila. The oily smokiness is enhanced by a touch of cured meats. Others found "...peanut brittle and smoky toffee."

Tasting note: Always interesting to try young whiskies. Here's another indie Caol Ila – this time a toddler and it seems peatier than usual; Heavy, dense and oiled up on the nose with Calabrese pizza, smoked meats, lanolin, peppercorns, herbal teas and more, while the flavour-wave of oily peat saturates the mouth: Winter sausages, smokey citrus and pepper follow in a creamy finish. The aftertaste is kippery, menthol fresh, then ashy, lanolin-like and drying. Easily carries the massive ABV. Who says great whisky needs to be old? 57.9% Alc./Vol.

Bunnahabhain's low-to-unpeated style has gained a reputation as the most gentle single malt produced on an island otherwise famed for its massively flavoured whiskies. This indie edition was distilled in 1997 and bottled in 2018 after 20 years in a hogshead. The price / quality ratio is very tempting given what you'd be paying for distillery releases of similar pedigree.

Tasting note: [Cask #5411 tasted] Bright gold. Unfolds in stages, being initially mezcal-like before turning sweetly sooty. Second pass finds scents of brine, fruit’n’nut chocolate...bircher muesli? Turns full circle after 10 minutes of swirling and air contact as the peat retreats and orchard fruits come to the fore. Overall, a robust and quite heavily peated Bunnah’, with very good concentration and an attractive salted caramel chocolate note towards the finish. Give it time to show its best. 50.4% Alc./Vol.

As the major part of production continues to be used in the White Horse blends, it was only relatively recently that Glen Elgin became available as a single malt. The house style remains mellow and sweetly honeyed and only found as a standard issue 12 year old, excepting the odd indie bottling. This one's from the Japanese 'Acorn' company. Distilled 1995 and bottled 2018.

Tasting note: [Cask #3218 tasted]. Bright gold. Floral soft bouquet , bursting with sweet fruit (caramelised pineapple, peach and pear). Air contact accents a peppery nose feel, along with cocoa, vanilla and cream tea biscuits. Concentrated. Lots of beeswax and stewed orchard fruitiness - almost like some Clynelish. Warming alcohol, finishing with ripe apple, pear drops and vanilla. Crisp and invigorating. 50.8% Alc./Vol.

A salty, sultry attack with the peat arriving in oily waves. Incense, eucalyptus, iodine and elastoplast make a definitive stamp on the finish. The aftertaste turns peppery, kippery, with maritime freshness persisting. Great distillery character. For all its brooding depth this retains an effortless, ethereal lightness. 56% Alc./Vol.

Most commonly found as a 10 year old with the house style tending towards fruity, sherry sweetness, this one from Japanese Indie bottler 'Acorn' was distilled in 2002 and bottled in 2018 after maturation in a hogshead.

Tasting note: Bright gold. Pretty on the nose with floral soft notes hinting at orange spice cake, milk chocolate and muesli bar, refreshed by traces of peppermint or pine resin. A change took place when the production team altered the style of the spirit from nutty to waxy in 2015. It was Diageo's strategy to compensate for the loss of Clynelish in their market-leading blends when it temporarily closed for renovations. As of the Summer of 2022, Dailuaine reverted back to its original, nutty style, so a small window of opportunity exists for fans to experience the difference. Movers and shakers in the distillery warehouse.

While distilleries are dedicated to the singular task of making spirit, selling it is another story. A portion will be reserved for blenders and official bottlings, but distillieries also swap and sell both new spirit and casks of fully mature whisky. This is where independent bottlers step in. In some cases, they're just enthusiasts wanting to try their hand in the whisky market. Mostly, however, casks are hand selected and purchased by professional brokers with large warehousing facilities. Once deemed mature, the whiskies are then bottled and marketed under an "independent' label.

There are close to one hundred indie bottlers currently working the Scotch whisky trade. One such bottler, Adelphi, discerningly nominate only 1 in 40 barrels for selection each year and from that, bottle only fifty single casks. A much older company, Cadenheads (founded in the 1840s) is legendary for their myriad single cask, cask-strength, non-chill-filtered whiskies and rums.

We have a huge selection of indie whiskies you can buy online.

Gordon & Macphail, Mackillop's Choice, Specialty Drinks, Signatory... the list goes on. Whichever you choose, chances are the independent bottler has gone to considerable effort to taste and select barrels with an emphasis on individuality, in other words, discovering a dram the offers an exciting contrast to the standard issue distillery house style.
