Vodka

Unaged, colourless and feather-light on aroma and taste, Vodka has achieved a phenomenal global following, transcending its rustic roots to become the world's most popular alcoholic drink. Versatility as a mixer has been key to its success. Look beyond the mass marketed brands for the real excitement in this category, including vodkas from non-traditional producers like Australia, France and the United Kingdom. We offer one of the most comprehensive ranges of vodka online, and you can have them shipped to most areas of Australia. Click here to learn more about Vodka.

    Gaillac, FRANCE
    Reduced from $89.99
    $79. 99

    ABV: 40%

An unusual vodka. Whereas most vodkas are produced from common starches such as wheat or potatoes, Ciroc is made from the Mauzac Blanc and Ugni Blanc grapes left on the vine for extended ripening. The fruit is sourced from Gaillac in the Southwest of France, (nestled between Roussillon and the Pyrenees in the South and the Gorges of the Tarn in the East). After harvesting, the juice is pressed, cold fermented then distilled five times - the fifth time using specially-designed, traditional copper pot-stills.

Tasting note: Crystal clear. The aroma is pronounced by vodka standards with a mixed peel / citrus focus that you’d anticipate from a gin. The citrus theme carries through to the palate which is fresh, medium dry and gently warming. Tails off nicely finishing clean, dry and mildly spicy with juicy grape and sweet citrus notes persisting. Think of a gin less the juniper - the possibilities are endless! 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Clear. Perfumed aromas of lemon creme and Key Lime pie. A soft, supple entry leads to a glycerous, sweetish medium-to full-bodied palate with creamy vanilla frosting, citrus pie, and mild peppery spice flavours. Finishes with a peppery baked citrus peel fade. More of a citrus flavoured vodka or eau-de-vie (which technically it is) in character, but nice.

Other reviews… Clear. Owns a peculiar bouquet reminiscent of turkey dressing. Palate entry is sweet, ripe and grapey, a complete 180-degree turn from the odd bouquet; midpalate highlights the sweet, fruity ripeness to the point where it starts to resemble grappa. Finish is delightfully sweet, polished and elegant. Rating: 90-95 - www.wineenthusiast.comsize>

Crystal Head Aurora Limited Edition Vodka (700ml)

    Reduced from $109.99
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Note: As pictured, does not come with presentation box.

A limited edition bottling the popular Crystal Head Vodka, with a subtle difference. English grain has been used as opposed to the Canadian varieties from the standard expression. Expect a heavier spice profile, backed up by a hard edged, dry finish. Packaged in a colourful, shimmering version of the original, taking inspiration from Aurora Borealis.

A controversial archaeological mystery, 13 crystal heads have been found in regions around the world, from the American southwest to Tibet. They’re dated between 5,000 and 35,000 years old, and were supposedly polished into shape from solid quartz chunks over a period of several hundred years. Although according to Hewlett Packard engineers, they bear no tool marks to tell us exactly how they were made. The heads are thought to offer spiritual power and enlightenment to those who possess them, and as such stand not as symbols of death, but of life.

Enter Dan Aykroyd, well-known actor, musician, entrepreneur and spiritualist. He’s a believer in what he calls the "invisible world" where otherworldly presences are a "form of reality as valid as our normal reality." Partner and veteran fine artist John Alexander has exhibited extensively in the United States and around the world. Together, they were avid researchers of the legend of the 13 crystal heads. And from this inspiration, an idea was born.

Launched in 2008, Crystal Head Vodka was the fastest penetrating product to all 50 US states in history. The brand has been awarded OU Kosher certification.

Production starts with grains grown in the region of Chatham, Ontario. These grains are then processed and distilled four times to produce a neutral grain spirit at 95% ABV. The raw spirit is then reduced down to 40% alcohol by volume using water sourced from an aquifer in the Newfoundland, Canada countryside. This water seeps to the surface through a bed of porous rock which serves as a natural filter as it has done for many thousands of years.

The vodka is quadruple distilled, then triple charcoal filtered. Finally, every drop is filtered three times through 500-million year-old crystals know as Herkimer Diamonds. These quartz crystals are found in very few places in the world, including Herkimer, New York and regions in Tibet and Afghanistan. Perhaps because they share the raw material from which the original crystal heads were carved, they are thought to have similar spiritual qualities. The production process is carried out at one of the last government owned distilling facilities in the world – The Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation.

Not just a good story - Crystal Head Vodka was awarded a Double Gold medal at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition held in May 2011. More than 200 vodkas in total entered the competition; of this, Crystal Head Vodka was one of only a handful of brands to receive a Double Gold Medal in the entire competition.

Tasting notes: Clear. Mineral, powdered milk, shredded wheat, and white pepper aromas follow through on a silky entry to a slightly off-dry light-to-medium body with sweet cream notes. Finishes with a warming peppery spice and mineral ore accented fade. International Review of Spirits Award: Silver Medal

    $599.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
Much debate has lead to question the integrity of vodka. With a boom in the 1970's and 80's, marketing ploys were designed to re-position the spirit as a premium product, with price reflecting an emphasis on neutrality. Many producers claim outlandish methods in the way their vodka is distilled and purified. Launched in 1989, Danzka vodka indulges in the contemporary style that’s slowly breaking from the majority of neutral/tasteless products on the market.

Distilled from wheat, a continuous still is used to produce a more aromatic spirit, with the end result being a clean, soft, slightly-citrusy style, perfect for serving cold on ice and neat. When an elderly Russian gentlemen came in to our store and complimented us on placing our vodkas in the fridge, we thought it prescient of Danzka to sell their product in an aluminium flask - perfect for keeping it cool whilst out of the fridge! 40% Alc./Vol.

Oak Vodka of Poland is their latest product, to which the company dedicated more than two years of work. It is as the name suggests, vodka aged in oak. This special presentation bottling in the shape of a bullet will be a talking point to say the least. 40% Alc./Vol.

    SWEDEN
    $120. 00
    Bottle
    $1440.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Produced in Sweden (home of Absolut Vodka) using locally grown winter wheat. According to the producer’s notes, the distillery employs a unique fermentation and distillation process that essentially eliminates the need of charcoal filtering; due to removal of impurities in the early stages of production- little more information can be offered unfortunately.

The end result is undoubtedly one of the more impressive bottles we've seen on the shelf – both visually and qualitatively - not to mention a great conversation starter amongst guests. Spin the bottle, nuclear style?

Tasting note: Crystal clear. Almost gin-like with distinct citrus peel aromatics becoming more meringue and cream like with exposure. Light to medium bodied. Clean, creamy and dry with faint fruity / grainy flavours. Gently tingly spirit finish. Concludes dry and fresh. 40% Alc./Vol.

A 100% corn based vodka from Hokkaido island, the northernmost of the four main islands that make up Japan. Three times distilled and four times filtered, the name translates to "Samurai Glory".

Tasting note: Perfect clarity. Delicate scents of peppercorns, black jellybeans and Meyer lemon peel follow in a sleek, medium bodied vodka with light meringue flavours in a peppery finish. A great combination of viscosity, body and vibrancy. 40% Alc./Vol.

From Sullivans Cove Distillery, distilled from Tasmanian barley.

    Firestarter Vodka (700ml)
    MOLDAVIA
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
Ingrained into the very nature of vodka is a conundrum that has created the need for vodka brands to reinforce image and promotion: As most vodkas are inherently light on aroma and flavour (differentials which distinguish other spirits like whiskies, gins or rums for example), there is simply little else to sell on other than the origin of the base ingredients, the vodka's 'purity' and / or extravagant presentation. The Vodka market knows no boundaries when it comes to presenting their product.

Unfortunately, we’re suckers for gimmicky packaging. It's why Firestarter Vodka has us all fired up. Shaped like an extinguisher, it comes complete with a locking pin, trigger and nozzle and is sure to be a show piece on any bar (though probably best left on the top shelf, lest it gets mistaken for a genuine extinguisher and the party really gets out of control).

This vodka was produced in Moldova from Winter wheat.

Tasting note: Crystal clear. Moderate aroma offers notes of mineral, wet rock and citrus peel. Gently peppery profile is semi sweet, slightly oily in texture and with a pleasantly warming finish. Subtle citrus peel aftertaste. Clean, brisk and simple. 40% Alc./Vol.
    Franciacorta Single Malt Vodka (700ml)
    Gussago, Brescia, ITALY
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

The Franciacorta company was founded in 1901 by Luigi Gozio (grandfather, on their father’s side, of the three brothers Giuliano, Antonio and Luigi, who still run the company) at Gussago, a town in the splendid hilly region of Franciacorta, in the Province of Brescia.

The boys take a malt whisky producer's approach to their vodka using barley grain and pot still single batch distillations.

Other reviews... The rather inexpressive bouquet offers moderately evolved scents of dry grain and sour mash. The palate entry shows more personality as the taste goes oily and semidry; at midpalate a touch of lanolin firms up the flavor profile as the grain becomes more intense. Finishes dry and vegetal. 85-89 points -www.wineenthusiast.com

    Grey Goose Vodka (1000ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE

    Bottle
    $1163.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

In 1998, the Beverage Tasting Institute of Chicago conducted a blind taste test of more than 40 vodkas. They awarded points based on smoothness, nose and most importantly, taste. Of all the vodkas sampled, Grey Goose emerged victorious receiving 96 points out of a possible hundred and was awarded the only Platinum medal. If sales comparisons reveal anything, Grey Goose is set to become the worlds leading super premium Vodka, outselling traditional products from Poland, Sweden and Russia. Polish Premium brand ‘Belvedere’ sold 375,000 cases in 2002 and has grown an average of 35% over the past five years. However, upstart Grey Goose has exploded past the competition from a paltry 50,000 cases in 1997 to 1.15 million 9-litre cases last year. Such results were not anticipated from this humble grain vodka made in the Cognac region of France!

Tasting Notes: "Medium-bodied. Anise, citrus peel, herbs, minerals. Soft, rounded texture. Plush palate with a delicate edge. Shows off rich fruit elements surrounded by beautiful aromatics. Lovely fragrance holds forth as backnotes of lighter spice and stone are discerned. A sensational, elegant drink, that will do well with a twist and a good chill." - Notes sourced from www.tastings.comsize>

Other reviews... "Crystal-clear and pure. Nose is unabashedly smoky in the first nosings; aeration smoothes it out as fetching aromas of mint, harvested grain and grain husk assert themselves. On palate, the entry is intensely grainy, silky and off-dry; the midpalate offers moderate bite plus chewy tastes of cracked wheat and cocoa bean. Aftertaste is dry, cleansing and medium-long." More about Grey Goose Vodka...size
Although Grey Goose Vodka is distilled and bottled in Cognac, France the product is 100% American owned. Chairman, Sidney Frank, dreamed of creating a vodka with a taste as radiant as its presentation. "I went to one of the finest distillers in France and asked for their assistance in making this dream of mine a reality" says Frank. "We tested various blends of grains and different water sources. When we tested the mineral water from the Gente springs of Cognac, which is naturally filtered with Champagne Limestone, we realised we had discovered the perfect source."

    Heavy Water Vodka (750ml)
    SWEDEN
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
An ultra-premium vodka launched in 2005 and made on the Blomberg Estate in Västra Götaland County located in West Sweden. Produced from starch heavy Winter wheat via continuous distillation and filtered somewhere between two and four times (the exact number is a secret known by only the Master Distiller, Mika Pirttimaeki). Water is sourced from a recently discovered underground lake that originated back in the last Ice Age, 5-10,000 years ago. Its name is taken from the rare isotope D20 (deuterium oxide), which scientists refer to as "heavy water". The award-winning bottle design is finished with an Italian-made metal cap with a rod placed down the center of the bottle that also acts as an aerator each time you pour. The producers say, " “Releasing aerated aromatics and oxygenated flavours make our vodka taste unique and unlike any other vodka produced.” Marketing aside, this really is great vodka!

Tasting note: Pristine clarity / rainwater pure. Soft, floral aromatics offer suggestions of cream, sweet grains and white pepper followed by hints of marshmallow in the second pass. Satiny, light to medium bodied profile is super-clean, minerally and gently peppery ; wonderfully crisp and vibrant. Concludes minerally, long and chalky with the initial sweetness deftly balanced. Lipsmacking, drier-styled Martini vodka. Outstanding.40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Appearance: Crystal clear. Aroma: Mineral, dusty nose with faint hints of burnt toast and fennel. Taste: Clean palate with faint cereal bran, aniseed and slightly burnt toasted almonds. Aftertaste: Prickly cracked black pepper finish with faint cream of soda. 4.5 stars. - www.diffordsguide.com

This is Perth-based venture is the brain child of Little Creatures founders and former owners, Nic Trimboli, Howard Cearns and David Martin.

The boys comment, "Using biodynamic farmed wheat from Australia's Wheatbelt, fermenting in small tanks using an organic yeast and then distilling in our custom made copper pot still, we have crafted a clean and textured vodka which references our ground of clean skies, healthy farms and the team behind producing it...Flavours of vanilla and fruit shine through with a super smooth mouthfeel from distilling a select number of times... enough to ensure we embrace the soft sweet flavour of the wheat but not too much to strip away this wonderful texture."

Not surprisingly, a gin, absinthe, rum and whisky made from WA-sourced ingredients are also planned. 40% Alc./Vol.

Imperia Crystal Quartz Filtered Russian Vodka (700ml)
    RUSSIAN FEDERATION
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

One of a series of three new Russian Vodkas to enter the Australian market. This Vodka is bottled at 40.0% Alc./Vol. which offers much purer expression of the source ingredients than the 37.0% alternatives. This bottling was filtered using crystal quartz.

Tasting Notes: Water like appearance. The most lifted nose of the trio, though terribly underwhelming for a product of it's price. Notes of vanilla, marshmallow, citrus dawdle from the glass. The palate achieves a level of sweetness normally found only in liqueurs; Cloying, with flavours of liquidised mixed lollies. Clean finish, with an almost credible peppery aftertaste. Much like the crystals employed by the filtration method, this Vodka is semi precious. 40.0% Alc./Vol.

    RUSSIAN FEDERATION
    $47. 99
    Bottle
    $575.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
A vodka produced from highest quality, quadrupled-distilled grain spirit and the best water - from the Ladoga Lake, remarkable for its softness. In Russia, Vodka originated in the south, in a zone with a favorable mild climate, far from industry, where the best types of wheat grow. It is believed that 'grain wine' (an alternate name for vodka) appeared and was actively produced for the first time in grain-producing regions, i.e., in the territory of the present Rostov Kursk, Oryol, Tambovo, Voronezh, and Saratov regions. Wheat has historically been cultivated in these territories. Today, experts select grain with high starch content and outstanding organoleptic characteristics. The 'Saratov' type of wheat, for example, which is used in the production of alcohol for 'Imperial Collection' vodka, meets these standards. Wheat is sent from the south of the country to the west, to the ancient Russian city of Smolensk, where the merchant P.A. Machulsky established an alcohol plant in 1871. The plant has always been famous for its high-quality production and has earned numerous prizes and awards at competitions and exhibitions.

Vodka Imperial Collection was presented on official reception on the day of Inauguration of the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin. The vodka was awarded with a gold medal in International Contest as a Best product of year 2004 at the International Exhibition PROD-EXPO 2004. An oval medallion on the front of the bottle features a portrait of Russian Emperor, Peter The Great (“In Armor”) by the Dutch painter Karl Moore (1717).

Tasting note: Brilliant, crystal clear. Pure and fresh with subtle notes of icing sugar, cool mint and mineral followed by a smooth, creamy yet dry, mildly peppery profile with lemon myrtle yoghurt and semi-sweet grainy notes in the aftertaste. Excellent balance and mouthfeel - a pleasure to drink on its own. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Clear. Very clean and neutral aromas suggest brioche, powdered sugar and fig yogurt with a silky, off-dry medium body and a long, smooth, sweet cream and delicate peppery spice finish. Great purity and balance. Will make a fine martini or sip neat. 40% Alc./Vol.

Choosing the right vodka when you buy online.

There's rye, corn, potato, wheat and grape-based vodkas as well as a selection of luxury lines and flavoured expressions. But the price of a vodka doesn't necessarily reflect its quality, which ultimately lies in the type of raw materials used, the method and care taken during distillation and the quality and technique of filtering. Marketing costs often exceed production costs many times over, so that less expensive brands that bypass extravagant presentation can offer excellent value. At the same time, cheap mass produced brands might be passable in heavily mixed drinks, but make for mediocre Martinis.

Isn't all vodka much the same?

Most vodkas are inherently light on aroma and flavour (differentials which distinguish other spirits like whiskies, gins or rums for example), so ingrained into the very nature of vodka is a conundrum that's created the need for big brands to constantly reinforce image. However, clearly all vodkas don't taste alike, otherwise there'd be no reason to favour a $70 bottle over a $25 bottle. Each brand has a unique, though subtle, aroma, taste and burn. Look for some of the more common aromas and flavours like wheat, dough, pastry, cream, vanilla, talc, mineral water, icing sugar, marsh mellow, confectionary, citrus, dried fruits, spice and pepper to name a few. Charcoal filtration can add a mildly sweet, sooty quality. Quartz filtration can lend a minerality to the spirit. Add mouthfeel to the equation and you'll begin to appreciate the subtle differences that define vodka brands.
