Smith & Cross Traditional Jamaica Navy Strength Rum (700ml)
    JAMAICA
    Reduced from $120.00
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 57%

A mix of heavy bodied Wedderburn and medium bodied Plummer style distillates, bottled at full strength.

Other reviews... A top pick for tiki and tropical drinks, this practically begs for lime juice. Scented with warm honey notes, the palate shows lots of brown sugar and spice, plus an enticingly untamed, funky finish (the fabled hogo). Since it’s “navy strength,” you might not want to sip it straight up—the producer wisely recommends exploring the profile first in a daiquiri—though it’s smooth and interesting enough if you want to try.

Southern Coast Distillers Batch 01R Rum (700ml)
    Welland, South Australia, AUSTRALIA
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

The word is out, unfortunately this little venture is no longer. A formal newsletter was sent to Southern Coast Distillers members on December 4th, 2012 which can be found here.

The Southern Coast Distilling company was formed in May 2004 by three friends and their partners as a vehicle to build a South Australian Single Malt Distillery that will form a lasting legacy. The actual distilling first took place in January 2005 utilising the small 80 litre still built by the proprietors and named 'Monty' because it looked a bit like the cartoon character Monty Burns. They filled their first 50 litre cask from Tasmania in April 2005. Encouraged by their small success, "We realised that we could make passable spirit and that our worst case scenario of having large quantities of whisky to drink in our retirement if the endeavour failed was probably behind us. We immediately set about building a 600l still called Homer. Homer was commissioned on the 27th of June 2005 and charged with a wash of molasses to make rum the same day."

This rum was filled into a re-made and re-furbished, very heavily charred port cask made from American oak in May 2008. There was a very long fermentation using a wine yeast and Queensland molasses with acid balance provided by citrus fruit.

Tasting notes: [Batch 01R tasted] Pale gold colour. A dank wood aroma quickly blows off revealing attractive, sweet, estery aromas of brown sugar, dried banana, raisin and vanilla custard. The entry is soft and semi sweet, building with good concentration with flavours of dried banana and raisin toast. Gentle spices add depth. Creamy mouth feel. A little short but redeemed by a lengthy aftertaste of molasses, dried banana and spicy stewed fruits. A promising first release. 46% Alc./Vol. 180 bottles produced.

    Spytail Black Ginger Rum (700ml)
    FRANCE
    $59. 99
    Bottle
    $719.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
Ginger is seeing a resurgence, “ becoming a seriously popular flavour among cocktail consumers,” says Elwyn Gladstone, founder of Biggar & Leith, the team behind this new spiced rum. “Moscow Mules, Dark & Stormy and premium ginger beer are all booming.”

Spytail is based on a 19th century recipe and finished in France using a blend of Caribbean rums and spices. The brand “celebrates the French deep-sea pioneers and the submarines within which they plunged to terrifying new depths,” the company says.

Tasting note: Deep copper. Well defined aromas of dry ginger ale over vanilla, hints of cinnamon, green cardamom and icing sugar. A sweet, silky, viscous delivery: Early cola and vanilla are followed by pleasant gingery warmth. Concludes slightly drier than the middle stage, brisk, broad and a tad flat. Easy drinking. Comes packaged in bathysphere-style bottle. 40% Alc./Vol.

    St. Lucia Distillers 1931 Rum (700ml) - 3rd Edition
    Caribbean,
    Reduced from $145.00
    $130. 00
    Bottle
    $1560.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

This product contains some minor scuffing and bruising to the gift box. There may some small traces of sediment present, these do not affect the quality.

St Lucia Distillers are the makers of highly acclaimed rums such as Chairman's Reserve and Elements 8.
This 3rd Edition under the 1931 label was released to commemorate 82 years of the Dennery distillery in the Mabouya Valley (Dennery eventually merged in 1972 to become the St. Lucia Distillers).

It's a blend of rums from Pot Still and Coffey Stills (double column). For this bottling, there's less detailed information regarding its composition than previous releases, however it's reportedly been aged between 6 to 12 years and a small amount of sugar has been added to 'finish it'. If you think this is strange for a rum, keep in mind that the Venuezalean classic, Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva also has some 'sugar honey' added before bottling. Although it makes for a more liqueured expression, it's also one of our biggest selling rums. 43% Alc./Vol.

    Chairman's Reserve 1931 Rum (700ml)
    SAINT LUCIA
    $185. 00
    Bottle
    $2220.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

St. Lucia's 1931 expression is considered the jewel in the crown for followers of this distillery. Made as a tribute to the founder, Denis Barnard and the year he established the distillery, the 1931 series was originally released to commemorate 80 years of St Lucian rum. From 2011 through to 2016, a new blend was released annually with each different edition sporting a different coloured label. This appears to be the 1931 going forward, now under the Chairman's Reserve label: A blend of fourteen distillates from four different stills (two John Dore, one Vendome and one Coffey still). The components are molasses based with added funk from an additional 10% Lucian agricole, produced using cane growing adjacent to the distillery. Both column and pot still rums are aged between 6 and 15 years. Maturation takes place in Bourbon and Port casks followed by a gentle filtration before bottling. Presentation remains in the tradition of the original series: An elegant flask-shaped decanter, complete with impressive wooden stopper. 46% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Vibrant medium gold in color with a subtle bronze hue, the character of the rum is highlighted by the expressive aromas of honied raisins and vibrant toasty oak notes followed by hints of leather, spice and tobacco. A well-balanced mid-palate provides structure around flavors of rich sultana fruit with hints of crème caramel and buttery oak. At first a sweet raisin fruit, trailed by dry and tannic flavors from the oak barrels. A hint of grassy aromatic sweetness from the sugarcane distillate gives a unique, hedonistic but balanced element to finish of the rum.

    Chairman's Reserve White Rum (700ml)
    Castries, SAINT LUCIA
    $64. 99
    Bottle
    $779.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%
Tasting note: This is a blend of three to four year old rums distilled in a combination of copper pot stills and a Coffey still. It was aged in American white oak casks that once contained Jim Beam, Jack Daniels and Buffalo Trace Bourbons. Crystal clear / flawless and brilliant. Opens with scents of fairy floss, vanilla and hints of marshmallow. Second pass finds the aroma marginally subdued with suggestions of baked citrus, dried banana and grass. Middle-weighted, medium dry flavours of dried banana, vanilla and pepper. Chalky, gently spiced finish. Complex and beautifully balanced. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The marshmallow-like scent points towards the bold, rather sweet vanilla flavors to be found on the palate, with a raspberry note on the finish. 90 points - wineenthusiast.com

St Lucia Distillers are the makers of highly acclaimed rums such as Chairman's Reserve and Elements 8.
This '1st Edition' of 1931 was released in 2011 to commemorate 80 years of the Dennery distillery in the Mabouya Valley. It's a blend of rums from Pot Still and Coffey Stills (double column). For this bottling, nine casks, laid down between 1999 and 2004 were selected as amongst the finest of the distillery. The cask break down was seven American white Oak barrels from Jim Beam, Jack Daniels and Buffalo Trace and two x-Port casks. Finishing was carried out in White Oak casks before bottling without chill-filtration, so a light, natural sediment should be expected. 43% Alc./Vol.

    $1019.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
St Lucia Distillers Group of Companies is a small rum distillery situated in the scenically beautiful and agriculturally rich valley of Roseau on the Caribbean island of St Lucia. A passionate team of distillers and blenders work together to produce a range of over 25 rum and rum-related products, many of which have won honours at international competitions. This spiced version contains local spices and fruits including cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, vanilla, coconut, all spice, lemon and orange. Also added is Richeria Grandis – known locally as “Bois Bande” – a bark renowned in the Caribbean as a potent aphrodisiac . The distiller's comment, "We have found Chairman’s Reserve Spice benefits from a combination of steeping certain spices and Bois Bande in the rum for up to a year while the other ingredients are added during the blending process. In this way we can bring out the flavour of the spices and fruits while preserving the complexity and harmony of the underlying rum."

Considered by some the final word in the spiced rum genre and included in Wine Enthusiast's Top 50 spirits for 2011.

Tasting note: Brillinat polished copper pot colour. Powerful and engaging opening aromas include bubble gum and ginger biscuit; more redolent of fruit cake in subsequent inspections. A creamy entry follows through to an off dry, stewed fruit, allspice and gingerbread profile with cinnamon, clove and gingerbread competing in the finish. Lovely balance and concentration with the mid palate sweetness nicely tempered in the fade. Up there with El Dorado as one of the best of its kind to hit the market to date. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... So this is what all the bartenders have been talking about. Bright copper-penny color and a mulled-wine aroma rich with cloves, cassia bark, and sweet dried fruit notes. The flavor is delicately balanced, sweet and spiced but not too much of either. Ginger, cinnamon, and allspice take the leading role, not vanilla, from the first sip through to the lingering, lightly spicy finish. One of the few spiced rums worth sipping straight. 96 points - wineenthusiast.com

The (accidentally) extra-aged version of a St. Lucia classic.

On May 2nd 2007 St. Lucia Distillers was struck by a major fire which destroyed the administration and blending facility. Mercifully most of the distillery was spared but suffered great problems with storage space for the casks. In the melee that followed cellar master, Mr. Cyril Mangal, was forced to find space for ageing casks in the most unusual places. Having done so the cellar team had a memory lapse and forgot the casks that had been laid down for the Chairman's Reserve. These casks were later discovered and upon tasting were found to contain a wonderfully complex rum which was decided to offer as a limited release.

A blend of Coffey and pot still rums, initial maturation took place in American white oak casks - Jim Beam, Jack Daniels and Buffalo Trace - separately by still. After blending, the rum was reintroduced to oak for a further five years. The standard Chairman’s Reserve is around 3 to 5 years old. This is apparently a combination of 6-11 year old material. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... On the palate, this one is undeniably “rummy,” and a bit more boozy than you’d likely expect for the subdued proof point. Molasses and very dark toffee lead off, but once again this is quite fruity, with a combination of notes that range from the brighter red fruit of cranberry and cherry to dried fruit notes of raisin or prune. Fine oak spices then enter the picture, as do baking spice notes of clove and ginger. Again, I find myself thinking of boozy Christmas fruitcake, as the ethanol adds a slightly antiseptic character that perhaps knocks the enjoyment here down just a tad. All in all, this is a rich and fruit-driven aged rum that will definitely play well in cocktails calling for that kind of character, but it doesn’t quite have the complexity and array of flavors present in the Chairman’s Reserve 1931—in particular, the more earthy tones and the dark chocolate/coffee likely added by that expression’s port barrel aging. The Forgotten Casks is somewhat more straightforward than that, but it certainly packs a respectable punch for a mere 80 proofer. - pastemagazine.com

Notes from the producers... Wonderfully intense aromas of sultana and hints of tobacco and vanilla from the oak with sweet honeyed fruit and spices giving a wonderfully balanced and complex flavour profile...

Stone Pine Distillery Dead Man's Drop Black Spiced Rum (700ml)
    New South Wales, AUSTRALIA
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
A marriage of Stone Pine's rum with orange peel, vanilla and Australian native flavours of Ringwood and cinnamon myrtle. The label celebrates Bathurst's Bicentenary, and is inspired by infamous bushrangers, The Ribbon Gang. Ten of the gang were hung in 1830 in Bathurst's first public hanging.

Tasting note: Deep sienna brown. Lifted aromas redolent of fresh-sliced fruit cake show no dimunition after ample exposure. Aeration accents glace cherry and hints of liquorice strap. Slightly let down by the delivery which echoes the purity of the aroma but comes across a little flat. The finish redeems the mid palate as liquorice bullet and mild ginger biscuit flavours add some vibrancy. Arguably more like a liqueur than a spiced rum - enjoyable nonetheless. 40% Alc./Vol.

Proprietors, Bev and Ian Glen have their roots in the Scottish brewing and distilling industry. AUSTRIA
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 60%

The lower proof Stroh weighs in at a hefty 60% alc/vol and is distilled from herbs and fruit, as opposed to sugar cane so it will come as something of a novelty for the rum connoisseur. It is perhaps more indispensable in the kitchen than the bar, particularly when it comes to the creation of Austrian sweets, although it has its place in fruit bowls and hot drinks such as warming Jagertee, Punch and Grog.

    Sweetdram Smoked Spiced Rum (700ml)
    SCOTLAND
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 41%
An alternative take on traditional spiced rum, Sweetdram blends quality Caribbean rums from Guyana, Jamaica and Barbados and infuses them with grains of paradise, chamomile, lime leaf, fennel and cardamom as well as lapsang and organic figs. The latter are warm-smoked at the distillery. Their heavy phenolic content gives the false impression of an unusual, lightly-peated single malt. Unlike most other spiced rums, this has no added sugar.

Try it with ginger beer and fruit juice (e.g. apple, rhubarb). Shake vigorously with fresh lime juice, simple syrup and ice for a complex, contemporary daiquiri. 41% Alc./Vol.

Tamborine Mountain Distillery Gold Rum (500ml)
    North Tamborine, Queensland, AUSTRALIA
    $54. 99
    Bottle
    $659.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Michael and Alla Ward, along with daughter Sonya, have been tending their edible garden and running a distillery at their Tamborine Mountain hideaway since 1993. "As we did not want to use chemical sprays on our fruit, we discovered that our products did not meet with market requirements." explains Ward. "For a four person family, we had too much fruit, so we needed to convert it into something which would make this small property productive".

Although they only started selling to the public in 1998, recent wins at the Beverage Tasting Institute's (BTI) International Review of Spirits Awards in the US brings the total number of accolades it has received over the years to 260. They presently have over 80 products in their portfolio, some of which employ local indigenous fruits and herbs including quandong and lemon myrtle.

Self proclaimed as "The ferals on the Hill", Ward says that despite the international recognition, "...we're motivated to become an icon in our own country not to boast of export success. We have plenty of new products in the pipeline." He adds, "There are very few women distillers in the world and we are very proud to have one here at TMD in the name of my wife, plus my daughter Sonya heads the sales and marketing division".

Tasting note: Deep bright gold / polished brass appearance. Atypical aromatics are evocative of fresh olive oil being mildly grassy and fruity, becoming like polishing wax with exposure. Subsequent sniffs reveal more conventional scents but in a restrained way. Remains altogether odd. A light creamy entry delivers a delicately fruity and dry profile (unripe cantaloupe?); warming spices surge towards the finish and linger, followed by hints of vanilla and caramel at the fade. Unusual but not unpleasant. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews...Fragrance: Intense rum ester aromas, rum and coconut heart notes, freshness, green bananas, delicately vegetal, artichokes, rosehips, great amount of wood, delicate vanilla and malt notes, rum-plums, a touch of liquorice, delicate menthol coolness. Taste: Pure rum and coconut style, creamy, typical rum ester, associations of candies, apple- and pear-like, green and banana-like, artichokes, rosehips, vanilla, chocolate, cocoa beans, elegant honey sweetness, very harmonious, full-bodied, good length. 94.3 Points (Gold Medal Winner) - World Spirit's Awards 2013

That Boutique-y Rum Company O Reizinho 3 Year Old Batch 1 Cask Strength Rum (500ml)
    Madeira, PORTUGAL
    $130. 00
    Bottle
    $1560.00 Dozen
    ABV: 52.6%

Another rum oddity: made from sugar cane juice, produced on a single pot still rather than a column at Madeira's 'O Reizinho' distillery (meaning “The Little King”). No surprise then that ex-Madeira wine casks were employed for its maturation. Little known outside of Madeira, reportedly, Portuguese Rhum Agricole or 'Agricola da Madeira' is on the rise. Boutique-y's batch 1 is composed of 1936 bottles at 52.6% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... From what I’ve been able to find O Reizinho cask their rum at a very low 50% abv and the rum increases in abv with aging due to the water loss over time – this is all to do with climate, where a lot of spirits lose water and alcohol as they mature but some locations cause water loss at a greater rate thereby increasing the abv of the spirit. Also, such a low abv will give an increase in the water soluble components in the cask such as sugars and any residual wine that’s imparted into the cask so a 3 year maturation may seem short but the result could be interesting....This is hilarious stuff, I’ve never had a rum with this profile before and it really took some getting used to indeed. Once you’re in the zone with it though then things are really enjoyable. Sure, I certainly wouldn’t give a glass of this to someone and be all “This is what rum is like”, but I’d give them a glass of it and be all “Hey, look what rum can be like”. - rumtastic.com

    Reduced from $99.99
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 48.8%

That Boutique-y Company is showing a flair for sourcing rums from places you wouldn't expect - like Portugal - this one distilled at Engenhos do Norte on the island of Madeira who otherwise produce brands like 'Rum North', 'Branca' and 'Zarco'. Incidentally, Madeira is one of the few places outside the French islands that can use the term agricole legally. Produced from sugar cane juice, milled by steam engines (hence the label), and distilled through column stills, Batch 1 is an outturn of 1395 bottles at 48.8%. Expect a fruity rum with lots of freshness on the nose and more vanilla on the palate, finishing with a hint of salinity and mixed spices (pepper).

Other reviews... It’s initially dry and peppery, but also crisp, tasting of marshmallows, and tart white fruits like guavas, Thai mangoes, unripe pears, soursop, papaya, watermelon and pineapple. There’s a nice thread of lemon underneath it all, cumin, vanilla, and a nice touch of brine and olives.  This all leads to a conclusion that is short and easy, redolent mostly of sweet watery fruit with a last musky brine taste, and some more lemon zest.

In a peculiar way, it reminds me less of a French Island agricole than of a grogue from Cabo Verde. There’s a sort of easy crispness to the experience, with the herbal notes evident but not as strong and clear and focused as a Martinique rhum is. For centuries Madeirans drank their rhums unaged and white — of late they have begun to try and develop an aged rum industry and expand beyond the local market which thus far has consumed everything the small distilleries produce.  The development of real blending and ageing skill is still some years in the future, and thus far it’s only the small IBs like Boutique-y that have brought their rums to our attention. But I think that we should keep an eye out for the rhums from Madeira, all of them.  Based on the few I’ve tried, these guys know what they’re doing, know how to make a good rhum, and will be going places in the years to come. - thelonecaner.com

    ABV: 55.9%

A molasses based rum with a great big personality: fiery, full and flavoursome. The Port Mourant still, was (unsurprisingly) at the Port Mourant estate which was established in 1732. The process of nationalisation of the sugar industry lead to a centralisation of the various stills located around the country. First it was transferred to Uitvlugt, then in 2000 to its current home at Diamond Distillery along with all the other heritage stills and a modern multi-column set up (hence the transport-themed label). Single cask examples are generally the reserve of independents. In this very limited Boutique-y bottling, those sweet tarmac and burnt rubber notes have been nicely balanced against time in oak. 55.9% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Soft vanilla and ripe banana lead among plenty of winter spice and salinity. Charred oak adds a defined and muscular backdrop, which a little milk chocolate rises through. Palate: A buttery mouthfeel sparkles with complex molasses spice and sweet red chilli heat. An earthy oak core reveals roasted fruit, more sea salt and sticky toffee. Finish: A little engine oil adds an interesting touch to a long finish.

    ABV: 55.5%

This Boutique-y edition is sourced from Jamaica's Clarendon Distillery (est.1949 and initially owned by the Monymusk Sugar Factory). It's a large plant, home to about 5-6 column still marques and about 20 pot still marques. Amongst these is Monymusk, named after one of the oldest sugar cane plantations in Jamaica, located in Lionel Town, Clarendon. To confuse matters, there's also a brand called 'Monymusk', but that has only been around since 2012. The historical connection remains, as Clarendon is located on six acres in the Monymusk Estate. About 90% of the total output goes to Diageo's Captain Morgan and Myers brands, which in total accounts for about 60% of all Jamaican bulk rum exports. Monymusk is thus only a tiny fraction of what the distillery is producing.

A style described as "very elegant" by the bottlers, in fact, on a level with dogs riding the London Underground in suits and bowler hats reading broadsheets... Perhaps. At least, that's what the label implies. Is it delicious and rare? Hailing from the distillery after 14 years of continental maturation, this batch defies a convention: that the darker the rum the better the taste. Expect sweet, savoury notes and a hint of spice plus punchy orange zest, a toastiness from the cask and a pineapple-led finish. 374 bottles. 55.5% Alc./Vol.

Caroni bottlings are now entering the league of semi-mythical wood aged spirits. To find a well aged expression is increasingly rare. This 20-year-old weighing in at 54.7% is an obvious opportunity for collectors. One of 1875 bottles released as part of Boutique'y's batch 2, Caroni's full flavoured nutty, sweet and smokey molasses profile is now a rare relic of flavour history. The distillery has long since closed, and as you can see from the label, it’s looking a little worse for wear. When Caroni shut down their stills in 2002, it marked the end to 'heavy' rum production in Trinidad. $4200.00 Dozen
    ABV: 61%

Foursquare Distillery is the feature of the current shipment owned by the Seale family, longtime Barbados citizens. From the early 1900s, R.L. Seale & Co. purchased and aged rum to sell under its brand name. In the mid-1990s, Sir David Seale purchased the shuttered Foursquare sugar factory and converted it into a modern rum distillery to ensure a consistent rum supply. David’s son, Richard is now Foursquare’s Master Distiller and Master Blender, directing production via two double-retort pot stills and a column still. This edition was matured in ex-rum American oak casks for 22 years, eight of those in the tropics. 210 bottles are on offer. 61% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Nose: quite fruity (plums, baked pears) and relatively soft in comparison with the previous rums. A raisin sweetness behind it, as well as some toffee and brown sugar. Dark tea and wee herbal notes. Mouth: sweet bananas with honey and oak spice (cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper). Then some yellow apple. Also caramelized popcorn, vanilla and leather. In fact this reminds me of grain whisky of similar age, maybe because there’s most column still spirit in here? Finish: medium, slightly spirity, with drier leafy notes and herbal touches as it fades. This Foursquare has a rather whisky-like profile – column still whisky. It’s rounded, not hugely complex, as well as influenced by plain American oak. - whiskynotes.be

    Bottle
    $4200.00 Dozen
    ABV: 61.9%

The locally owned Hampden Estate started making rum around 1753. It’s well known for its pot distilled high ester styles. Until 2009 they only sold unaged rum in bulk, but now they have their own brand. This rare double-decader sports a dryish nose-feel that evokes pineapple and apricot chews, dried bananas and passionfruit yoghurt; the latter defines the palate, alongside dark chocolate and char-grilled fruits echoed by suggestions of sump oil and burnt rubber. Fully continentally matured in an x-rum barrel yielding 255 bottles, this complex, drier and more vivacious expression finishes on a spicy high note. 61.9% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Tasted from a 20ml sample.

Other reviews... We've had another HD (remember, that's not Harley-Davidson) from the same series just last week, and thought it was brilliant. Of course this is Hampden, the marque being 'HCLF', so Hampden with 500-700 gr esters/ HLPA. Colour: straw. Nose: new scuba diving suit (isn't Christmas around the corner), balsamico, olives, pickled gherkins, carbon, new tyres, acetone… etc. With water: more acetone, nail polish remover, glue, tarry ropes ala Ardbeg, also dried rambutans and longans, which is very specific… Mouth (neat): superlative, immense, tarry, salty, briney, even a tad 'burnt', as in 'burnt tyres'. Perhaps a wee cup of onion soup? Some sweet chilli mix too. With water: good fun, the dried longans and rambutans are back. This one is very sensitive to H2O, the lower you go down the degrees, the sweeter it gets, which is not common either. Finish: long, acetic, sweet as well. Sweet tar, even orange liqueur and then a medicinal side in the aftertaste. Comments: I think I liked last week's HD even better, for it was drier and saltier, as far as I can remember. But a great Hampden, nonetheless. 90 points - whiskyfun.com

National Rums of Jamaica operates the Long Pond distillery. The company is a three-way partnership between the Jamaican government, Demerara Distillers Ltd., and the West Indies Rum Distillery. They sell a significant amount of bulk spirit. This one's about as clean and soft a rum you could imagine for the ABV. It opens with medium-sweet molasses cake, vanillan oak and spikes of heat adding prickle and depth. Dense fruit and funk gather momentum and the tropical freshness is nicely defined; sweet oak is countered by green banana, then hints of gunpowder and struck match complexing the finish. 56.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 100% Pot distilled with continental ageing in a single x-rum cask yielding 220 bottles. At the estery, full-bodied end of the spectrum, this Hampden offers dried fruits galore. Even though a bittersweetness restrains the sugars, there are bursts of ginger cake, unripe banana, papaya and fruit slice mixed up with dry molasses, rounded off by a sooty, sulphury, char grill and liquorice root character that ends on a fascinating metallic note. It's a dense and layered expression that also boasts outstanding persistence. Pot distilled and continentally matured in an ex-rum barrel yielding 247 bottles. 58.7% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Tasted from a 20ml sample.

Other reviews... The marque here was 'HLCF', that's 500-700 gr esters per HLPA. Medium at Hampden, huge almost anywhere else! Colour: white wine. Nose: I'm not sure you can beat these olives, chalk, samphires, model glue and overripe bananas. With water: new bicycle inner tube, retsina, perhaps fennel seeds, capers. Mouth (neat): perhaps a notch sweeter than others, perhaps a tad heavier on tar and salty chutneys as well, it's even a tad shochu-y, in a way, it should go well with fatty meats and some cheeses, such as our beloved comté. Or with Moroccan garlic and pil-pil prawns (aren't we hungry now?) With water: this one will definitely work wonders with spicy food. Finish: very long, sublimely liquoricy and salty. Logically, there's a lot of salty liquorice in the aftertaste. Comments: there are many tinier flavours and aromas that we haven't even mentioned. Desert island dram, as they say on the continent. 91 points - whiskyfun.com

Jamaica's Clarendon Distillery (est.1949 and initially owned by the Monymusk Sugar Factory) is a large plant, home to about 5-6 column still marques and about 20 pot still marques. In short, Clarendon is a hybrid set up - on the one hand churning out industrial column still distillate for global brands, while on the other creating various esoteric and highly-regarded light and heavy ester pot-distilled rums. Obviously, this selection falls into the latter category.  The 'MMW' (Monymusk Wedderburn) marque means the ester count is between 290-300 g/hlpa. There are suggestions of raw sugar mingling with green woods, white pepper and distant wax on the nose, building with riper tropical fruits. It is sweeter in the mouth with bright, bristling spices, exotic fruit notes and pineapple pudding at the finish. There's a sense of freshness throughout, and the lower ABV makes for one of the most accessible of the current selections. Continentally aged in an x-rum cask with an outturn of 192 bottles. 49.2% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered. Tasted from a 20ml sample.

Other reviews... What a colour! Colour: old cognac. Nose: it's got the colours of an old cognac and indeed, it would start with notes of old cognac, but let's remember that aged spirits would tend to converge anyway as long as they're aged in similar woods. Raisins and pine resin, fir needles, eucalyptus, roasted peaches… and a rather massive quantity of ethanol. Let's remain careful as ever… With water: essential oils (thyme, mint), some camphor, the yearly production of a Scandinavian liquorice factory, plus really, loads of pine and fir needles. I believe this was aged in the tropics. Mouth (neat): heavily concentrated, with heavy liquorice fighting resins, ristrettos and oils. Water please… With water: in fact I love heavy piney and liquoricy flavours. There's even a wee saltiness (but there's no salt in rum), as well as some stewed fruits (peaches again) that would bring a semblance of fruity lightness. Quite. Finish: Comments: heavy and certainly oaky, but a little less tough than the 1996, and better balanced would I say. A perfect example of some weighty oakiness being a brilliant asset, as good oak and these kinds of power rums can tango extremely well. 91 points - whiskyfun.com

2003 The Colours of Rum Diamond Distillery 18 Year Old Edition No. 5 Cask Strength Guyana Rum (700ml)
    GUYANA
    $299. 00
    Bottle
    $3588.00 Dozen
    ABV: 54.2%

The Diamond Distillery sits on the east bank of the Demerara River near Georgetown and is home to Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL). Its history stretches back to the 1650s. We're told this was distilled in a single wooden pot still, which would have to be the Versailles still (Diamond have three in total). Versailles is key to El Dorado's 15 and 21 year old rums, producing a powerful, medium-bodied distillate with smokey, spicy and floral notes. The still was reconstructed in 2006 using the same Greenheart wood as the original - a native Guyanese lumber favoured in the construction of jetties due to its resistance to moisture. The wood is also said to add complexity and richness to the distillate. But it's not just the wood, it's the residue of previous distillations that gets ingrained into the wood, so as a pre-renovation distillation, this bottling will be noteworthy for rum mavens. Drawn from a single x-rum cask after full-term continental ageing, 242 bottles are on offer at a natural strength of 54.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Colour: white wine. Nose: high-ester rum, pretty pure, with 'a sense of' mezcal and olives, many fermentary smells, leaven, very distant whiffs of durian, anchovies, brine and all that. In short, it's rather brilliant. With water: some acidic fruitiness coming on top (lemons, rhubarb, gooseberries) and even notes of bandages and ointments. Mouth (neat): pretty massive, appropriately dirty, salty, perhaps in the style of Versailles, or of that of several Jamaicans. Or of raw Talisker. Bags of olives and anchovies. With water: similar, with also a dirtyish grassiness. Fresh compost and old hay, perhaps. Finish: rather long, on just the same kinds of notes. Dirty aftertaste – the kind of dirt we enjoy in rum. Comments: some very excellent salty rum. I've tried a wee blend with 50% this and 50% Talisker and I have to say I'm pretty proud as that pushed the citrus to the stratosphere. Sadly that also generated some soapiness. 89 points - whiskyfun.com

These very old Uitvlugts can be as intimidating as they are rare. A contrast to the 24 year old Edition No.6, in this expression the focus is on banana cake and icing sugar with secondary notes of lime and fennel. It's a literal tsunami of flavour with a massive, mouthwatering attack that's oily, alcoholic and almost achingly intense in equal measure; there is a subtle sweet smokiness evident alongside baked citrus and tropical fruits, and while there's less of the industrial notes in this example, there is perhaps more grassiness. What's unmistakable is the lip-numbing, ultra-high ABV, so adding water is almost obligatory when it comes to broaching this behemoth. 68.7% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Tasted from a 20ml sample. Collectable.

Other reviews... A funny past here, this baby was all aged in Europe, first ten years in bourbon and the rest in French oak. Wine then, I would suppose? Remember Uitvlugt got closed in 1999. This is from the ex-Port Mourant double wooden pot still that later went to Diamond. Colour: light gold. Nose: the exact opposite. This is grassy and petroly where the Enmore was all on thick raisins. Some burnt woods, fresh paint and putty, 'a Saturday morning at Ikea's' (no meatballs!) some linoleum, engine oil, dry vegetables (eggplants)… And a lot of ethanol that burns your nose and makes your spectacles opaque. Mind you, 68.7% at 30 years! They must have filled at still strength, given that this was aged in a cool climate. With water: the expected anchovies and olives, lemongrass, pickled small artichokes.. Mouth (neat): don't. Like drinking half a bottle of Weak Knees sriracha sauce. With water: I'm happy to report that we got it. Pure, almost crystalline citron liqueur with some oysters and tar. Green peppercorns. Finish: very long and possibly the most vertical old rum I could try. Some lime juice and half a glass of Laphroaig C/S. Comments: they bottled a blade here. Loved this one too but it may give the casual taster a hard time. Oh and no live flames allowed! 89 points - whiskyfun.com

Distilled using pot and column stills and matured for five years in Barbados followed by another five in ex-whisky casks on the continent. Big on vanilla aromatics developing with exotic fruity depths and ripe citrus peels, this is potent and powerful with a slightly hot, unripe attack. Early bittersweetness and more oak and molasses-driven than a high-ester style, it covers the tongue with papaya, tingling alcohol and complex dried herb, liquorice root and tobacco-like flavours. Long and spiced-up, not exactly casual drinking, but where it lacks balance it makes up with an engaging individuality. 61.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 259 bottles. Tasted from a 20ml sample.

One of two outstanding rums from Long Pond in the latest batch. Soft, effusive, beautifully integrated aromas headed by fruit and funk drift from the glass and carry through note for note on the palate. ABV: 62.9%

As the 21st century dawned, the Caroni distillery took its last breath. Even from a 20ml sample, you can see why it was sought-after material for blending. It has an effortless quality that speaks of classic rums; Molasses, American oak, sweet spices, liquorice root and well balanced spirit heat are delivered in a tight package that just feels more aristocratic than many of its siblings. It also has some of the characteristics of a fine single malt, being honeyed, rounded and with less wild 'tropicality' - which perhaps is no coincidence - the column-style rum was matured for eleven years then shifted to Europe for another twelve years ageing in ex-whisky barrels. Trinidad’s government had previously taken ownership of the sugar and rum operations in 1975 to keep them operating. Unfortunately, various turnaround plans, including a partial sale of the distillery to Angostura, did not come to fruition. Caroni stopped making rum in 2003, and the remaining stock of 18,000 casks was sold off piecemeal to bidders, including the Main Rum Company and various independent bottlers. These are now considered investments, with no end in sight. 62.9% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Collectable.

The Colours of Rum is the newest creation from the famous bottler and luxury goods purveyor, Wealth Solutions in Warsaw, Poland. The team has been identifying and selling the world's most collectible products in almost every category, but their specialty is fine drinks. Entering the league of semi-mythical wood aged spirits, Caribbean rum doesn't come much rarer or more collectable than Caroni. Various bottlers have secured casks over the years and the last remaining stocks are slowly being released. To find a well aged expression is increasingly difficult. This 24-year-old weighing in at 62.9% is one of 251 bottles released as part of The Colours of Rum Edition #3. An obvious opportunity for spirits investors, Caroni's full flavoured, nutty, sweet and smokey molasses profile is now a relic of flavour history. When the distillery closed, it also marked the end to 'heavy' rum production in Trinidad. Non chill filtered. Collectable.

This rum comes with an "EMB" marque which refers to the former Bog Estate marque (closed in 1948), now part of the Wedderburn category. Even though that signifies a relatively light rum with an ester content of 240-250 grams per hectolitre, this is one of the darkest in the shipment and one of the boldest: a powerhouse of flavours developing through liquorice strap, cinnamon, nutmeg and fruit cake as well as interesting hints of crushed ant. Maintaining momentum until the bittersweet end, surprisingly, it bears some resemblance to robust sherried single malts. Majority matured in the tropics (23 years then 3 continentally). 63.6% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered. 111 bottles. Tasted from a 20ml sample.

Uitvlugt (pronounced “eye-flut”) is a village in Guyana, based on the west bank of the Demerara River. The Dutch-owned distillery was established around 1750, housing double wooden pot stills which produced a characteristically heavy rum. In 1975 the government began consolidating production, closing the operation in 2000. Matured for two years in the tropics followed by 21 years in an ex-cognac cask in Europe, Edition No.6 is another confronting, challenging Uitvlugt that takes time to get your head around - its diverse aromas evoking rubber, tarmac, pineapple husks, dried fruits and dried herbs; the flavours are dryish, fruity, tropical but not sweet with low-burn spirit heat. Giving more richness at the finish, dried tropical fruits and fresh grassy notes rise, as does white pepper and funk. Not unlike some mezcal - a kind of 'semi-ripe' style with a highly individual character. 53.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 262 bottles. Tasted from a 20ml sample. Collectable.

Notes from the bottlers... Meat, leather, pink grapefruit.

    ABV: 64.1%

The third Uitvlugt in the Colours of Rum shipment is, to our knowledge, the oldest ever to land in Australia and one of the oldest bottled to date. Given that the distillery has long ceased production, it should appeal to anyone looking to secure a slice of Guyanese distilling history. Created in the renowned Double Wooden pot still from Port Mourant, the oldest wooden pot still in the world (now re-located to the Diamond Distillery), it produces a very heavy, oily and richly textured rum that's being at the core of the British Navy's blend for centuries. This edition was continentally aged for around two thirds of its life in an x-whisky barrel with an outturn of 222 bottles, but only a tiny fraction of that has made it to Australia. If you're looking for investment grade rum, this is it. 64.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Collectable.

Other reviews... “Nose: deeper and richer. Burnt caramel stands out, followed by sweet pineapple, classic oil paint and old varnish. Petroly caramel. Fresh Granny Smith but also chocolate and tapenade. Hints of tobacco as well. Mouth: same combination of brighter notes (lemons, green fruits) with caramel, firmly salty liquorice and tarry notes. Strong and definitely more rustic than the 1990. Resins and bitter herbal notes after a while. Then some ground coffee and charred wood. Even a hint of antiseptics. Just flashes of barbecued pineapple in the background. Finish: long, on tarry notes, liquorice, saline notes and herbal bitters. Quite a heavy style Uitvlugt, very rich but with a dose of astringency as well. Really good but a kind of ‘hammer’ spirit. It makes me appreciate the well-dosed balance of the 1990 even more.” - whiskynotes.be

Notes from the bottlers... This expression offers up aromas of burnt caramel, wood, fried pineapple, green apples.

Other reviews... More awesome single barrel Foursquare. We're seeing lots of these out there, but they're not all created equal. This lovely barrel offers a huge nose of fresh tropical fruit, coconut, orange oils and pungent vanilla bean. Big wood, big caramel, dark roasted coffee beans. On the palate its rich and textured with a brightness that's not expected, offering still tons of vanilla, powerful oak and bold numbing spice. The creamy texture and vibrant wood, for an altogether whisky drinkers rum in many ways. - David Othenin-Girard, K&L Wines

Ex-bourbon cask matured for 11 years, including 5 years in the tropics. More settled and balanced than assertive and exotic, this has lovely soft vanilla, caramel and dried coconut accents to the nose but with an arresting, intense, herbal, sweet cedar, cut grass and bitter orange character to the palate. Heat from the alcohol and hints of rosewater enter at the finish. Distinctive, and at the price, one of the better values in the latest consignment. Column and pot distilled. 59.3% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Tasted from a 20ml sample.

Other reviews... Aged for 5 years in the tropics and probably the usual self-blend of column and pot rums. Now I do vividly and fondly remember the 'pure pot' Foursquare I could try last year. I'm sure there will be more. Colour: gold. Nose: always this orangey lightness that's so seductive, these Jaffa cakes, marmalade, actually even more orange juice (freshly squeezed), orange blossom… Aren't oranges stealing the show here? But rum with Vitamin C, who would complain? With water: light earthiness, putty, marzipan, touch of linoleum perhaps… Mouth (neat): not the first time that I'm finding an agricole side to a Foursquare. Orange cake, cane honey, maple syrup, rosehip tea, these touches of varnish and lemon juice that we always enjoy… With water: stays the same, gets just easier – not that it was difficult before. Finish: medium, on orange blossom madeleines and scones, and indeed orange juice. Soft aftertaste. Comments: particularly excellent at just 11. Now since years in the tropics are tripled, that would actually be (3*5)+6 = 21 years. I liked this one better than No.18. 89 points - whiskyfun.com

Matured for six years in the tropics, the remainder in Europe, this column distilled rum comes from the Bellevue distillery, Guadeloupe’s largest exporter, producing in excess of 900,000 litres a year. Despite being bottled with a similar ABV, this is all-round more relaxed and integrated than Edition No.2 from the same distillery with bittersweet molasses cake, cinnamon and dried mango flavours - also more grassy, tangy and fresh at the finish. High alcohol remains evident, as do some minor green notes amid the golden syrup and plantain aftertaste, but they do little to detract from what is a wonderfully expressive French Caribbean style. 53.9% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 249 bottles. Worthy Park is another locally-owned distillery. While the estate dates to 1670, the current operation was built in 2005. Its single pot still makes a particularly recognisable Jamaican style that's found in many blends as well as the estate’s own brand. This is a classically fruity, funky, full-on WP with aromatics that follow through in a super tasty attack; Ripe papaya comes framed by bittersweet spices and there are touches of something citrussy, like lemon and lime chutney. The profile creeps up on you and gets bigger, richer and more intense. Aged for one year in the tropics, then continentally aged for fifteen years in an ex-rum cask, this is pretty much everything you'd expect from this make. 59.3% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 214 bottles. Other reviews... These fine people have just unloaded another incredible set of rums, all from the very best origins. Colour: gold. Nose: love this make, always loved this make which, despite some very heavy esters, is always displaying something better chiselled, pretty lacey. Some delicate petroly smells, crushed limestone and gypsum, some olive brine and oil 'of course', paraffin, paint, gherkins… Is this some Jurassic rum? With water: oh chalk, plaster, Barbour grease, shoe polish, washing powder, also maracuja and oranges… Mouth (neat): mango, honey and parsley, really? Water is needed… With water: unusually liquoricy and on aniseed, and rather sweeter than usual, at that. Still utterly wonderful, just a tad 'sweet' and pastissy (?) Finish: long, fresh, rather richer than other worthy ones at this point, but great. Honeyed aftertaste, with even mirabelles. Comments: nose and palate were not 100% aligned, but we're splitting hairs once more. Superb rum, no question. 89 points - whiskyfun.com

Those looking for a contrast will find pleasure in agricole-style French Caribbean rums produced on a number of islands to the north of Guyana. While they may lack the global footprint of molasses-based rum, rigorous regulations and strict adherence to high-quality production standards make it hard to find anything less than stellar examples out of Martinique and the lesser known Guadeloupe. Here's a perfect starting point: You don't need to try many Bellevues to realise they routinely pack in loads of character. Fresh, punchy and hugely flavoursome, this is a sensational example that kicks off with giddy aromas of ripe papaya, dried banana and mango plus a little caney freshness and a concentrated palate ranging through dry molasses cake, agricole funk and fruit cake. Castor sugar and dried tropical fruits come through in a long finish. These are some of our favourite Caribbeans. There must be an agricole element in the mix, but it's not stated. Matured for six years in the tropics, the remainder in Europe. 54.3% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 252 bottles. Tasted from a 20ml sample.

Notes from the bottlers... Sugar cane, wood, leather.

2006 The Colours of Rum Foursquare 15 Year Old Edition No. 16 Cask Strength Barbados Rum (700ml)
    BARBADOS
    $299. 00
    Bottle
    $3588.00 Dozen
    ABV: 61%

More than a few rum afficionados consider Barbados an ideal introduction to the category. Bajan rum is enjoyable and “rummy” without veering into the bolder (and let’s face it) more polarising flavours found in funky Jamaicans, grassy agricoles or the wild fermentation-induced complexities of Haitian Clairin. The most popular exported Barbadian rums are typically blends of column and pot distilled spirits. Fans of additive-free styles will find many choices here. Three key distilleries are Foursquare, Mount Gay and The West Indies Distillery (which produces Cockspur rum). However, it's Foursquare that's fast becoming one of the brightest stars in the Caribbean  firmament.  For anyone seeking high quality 'malternatives' without breaking the bank, look no further. The fourth generation venture is headed by Richard Seale, one of the most vocal spokespersons for pure and unadulterated rums in the region. His talent and drive led noted spirits authority, Fred Minnick to describe Foursquare as "the Pappy of rum." No surprise then that Foursquare is the feature of this shipment.

This 2006 distillation was drawn from a single cask matured for 14 years in the tropics in an ex-Bourbon barrel. According to one report, it's very similar to Edition No. 15, "...with more coconut and a bit more pot still nuance on the nose with less wood. On the palate it's much more fruity and less spicy...definitely a top tier Foursquare..." Natural cask strength of 61% ABV. 264 bottles. Non chill filtered.

    ABV: 58.1%

Always on the hunt for 'malternatives', this delivers another Hampden gem according to Serge Valentin at whiskyfun.com (review below). 250 bottles were released at a cask strength of 58.1% ABV. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Naturally, 'HD' could also mean Harley-Davidson, high-definition, or heavy-duty, but we do believe the mysterious acronym means 'Hampden'. Colour: pale gold. Nose: no wait, this is even greater, with more subtle herbs, teas, smokes of all kinds, mints (spearmint, peppermint, chocolate mint et al), earths, fermented sauces including Chinese ones, brines (fish, olives)… Wow! With water: like a great Meursault of great age by a great winemaker. Mouth (neat): just evident. Salted tar, liquorice and lemon juice. Extremely focused and tight. With water: astounding brininess. I'm also finding notes of sorrel soup, cress, melissa and a rather moderate tar this time. Finish: long, tarrier again. Would you believe me if I said it's reminiscent of some Port Ellens? Comments: something Bowmore-y in this one, actually, forget about Port Ellen. I find it even greater than its sister bottling, but that would rather be like 92.99 vs. 92.01, so both 92, let's not puzzle over numbers. 92 points - whiskyfun.com

...Nose: those lovely overripe fruits at first. Fermenting pineapple and banana, with spiced orange, green sugarcane as well as some gummy bears, vanilla and nail polish remover. Minty freshness. Thai basil leaves. Hints of cod liver oil and herbal tea. Excellent. Mouth: the banana / pineapple combo is still there, but the hints of salted liquorice, tar and black olives are bigger. Then some mango, leathery dryness and thyme. A faint hint of rubber. Anchovies and resinous notes in the end. Finish: long and drying, with salty notes, olives and liquorice. 92 points - whiskynotes.be

Jamaica is an island that has several seats at the head of the table when it comes to true rum exotica. Sometimes difficult to describe, their aromas and flavours can evoke an almost visceral response: Rotting bananas, overripe tropical fruits and industrial or petroleum-like notes, often referred to as 'hogo' or 'funk' mean that they're polarising, but for those who are “down with the funk,” it simply doesn't get better. The more extreme examples contain elevated levels of organic compounds - esters and higher alcohols - supercharged in long fermentations by wild yeasts and dunder (residue from previous runs). We colloquially call them high ester rums. Because they're so powerful and mostly reserved for blending, you could think of them as the single malts of the Caribbean. Today, just six distilleries make various styles, some owned by large companies, some are smaller independent operations. When bottled all-natural, they offer some of the most exciting rums on the planet.

Distilled in 1992 at a Hampden distillery in Trelawny Parish, this stems from one of the world's most traditional rum producers, renowned for some of the very highest quality high ester rums on the planet. The outturn was 251 bottles at an impressive 29 years of age without any dilution or filtration. 58.2% Alc./Vol.

Wealth Solutions are better known in Europe as bottlers of some of world's greatest spirits, including stunning investment oriented whiskies like 1940s Glen Grants and old Karuizawas. They’ve now introduced a new collection called The Colours of Rum. With a multi-hued minimalist presentation mostly based on country flags, these rums are released in batches -  all kinds of distilleries at once, usually at significant age statements. Coinciding with an increasingly critical recognition of the rum category, the collection is attracting enthusiasts who otherwise devoted their attention to high-end single malts. Every bottle comes from a single cask, at cask strength with no sweeteners or other additives. Maturation may take place in the Caribbean or in Europe or both.

Martinique, Guadeloupe and the adjacent island, Marie-Galante represent the very heart of Rhum Agricole, although contrary to popular belief, not all rums from those islands are strictly agricole. Montebello is one that makes a bit of both. Originally called the Carrère Distillery, it was founded in 1930 on the western side of Guadeloupe and primarily produces column distilled agricole using only hand-harvested canes from the volcanic regions of Petit-Bourg, Goyave, Basse-Terre, Lamentin and Sainte-Rose. It is also one of the last distilleries in the Caribbean to employ steam engines, using dry bagasse (cane residue) as fuel to run the cane crushing presses. Since December 2011, Gregory and Dominique Marsolle have taken over the business. Mostly what gets exported are very, very young rums, so this continentally aged 23 year old ranks as a genuine novelty. Matured exclusively in used rum barrels, the outturn was just 155 bottles. 43.3% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... The old Carrere distillery in Guadeloupe is agricole in all but name. Produced from hand harvest cane grown on volcanic soils, Montebello is one of the last distillers to use steam engines in the process. Founded in 1930, not a whole lot has changed there in the last 90 years. It's extremely unusual to see products of this age from here and even more so to be offered a single cask. Let's taste it! The color is light gold. Extremely unusual nose of wild flowers, fresh lavender, sweet fresh dill, honeysuckle, cured green olives and persimmon skins. On the palate it's medium bodied with a powerful exotic herbal character, fresh ground matcha, olive oil. The finish builds around the herbal and sundry driven flavors. A totally wild and gorgeous experience incomparable anything else... - David Othenin-Girard, K&L Wines.

Notes from the bottlers... Aromas of citrus, honey, and grass, with spices and wood in the mouth.

Bottled at a higher than normal strength of 49.2% Alc./Vol., we have less than a handful to sell. 1990 The Whisky Jury Enmore Single Cask 32 Year Old Cask Strength Guyana Rum (700ml)
    GUYANA
    $899. 00

    $10788.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50.9%

Just arrived from 'The Whisky Jury' - a well-aged rarity from Guyana's legendary wooden pot still yielding 222 bottles from a single re-fill barrel. All natural, cask strength and non chill filtered. 50.9% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Nose: elegant Versailles. It opens on a mix of dried herbs – oregano stands out, but also thyme and fennel seeds. Then hints of pencil shavings, green tea with lemon. Very subtle olives in brine. Also fabrics, dried flowers and the lightest whiff of glue and wax in the background. Lovely and unique. Mouth: quite assertive and thick, but again firmly un-fruity. It’s entirely on salty liquorice, a kitchen drawer full of dried herbs, pine needles, with hints of sea salt and camphory earth. Bitter almonds and some medicinal hints, like menthol. Later more pencil shavings. Then ink, black olive tapenade and faded hints of petrol. Not exactly easy sipping rum, but nicely complex. Finish: long and herbal. Slightly less special now, just a refreshing finale. Excellent Enmore, a good benchmark for this style and age. No ester bomb, not a fruity rum either, but a unique mix of herbs and this specific woody style. - whiskynotes.be

Besides whisky - possibly the only other wood-aged spirit capable of arousing the same passions comes from ‘the reed which brings forth honey’ (without the help of bees)– mainly because it’s capable of a similar dizzying complexity and diversity that whisky achieves. Rums are as diverse as whiskies, and much depends on how the distiller and blender create their product. Rum is also thought to be the world's oldest spirit with its cultural heritage centered in the Caribbean and its history inextricably intertwined with colonialism, slavery and the creation of capitalism. If you haven't been inspired to try the aged rums of the Caribbean then you’ve got a lot to look forward to. This applies not only to those who’ve never moved beyond Bundaberg and Coke since high school, but more so to those who are serious about wine, whisky and brandy - in short, those of us who are passionate about ‘flavour’.
