Havana Club Anejo 7 Year Old Rum (1000ml)
    Havana, CUBA
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Cuba has a long tradition of rum-making dating back to when Christopher Columbus introduced sugar cane to the island. The crop flourished in the favourable climate and fertile soil. Production of sugar soon followed and by 1620 there were 50 sugar refineries in Cuba. By the 1800s, the rum-making process had been refined with the introduction of copper stills and the concept of ageing the spirit in pots buried in the earth and wooden barrels. The second half of the 19th century saw the production of a more delicate rum, aged in white oak casks, developed initially “for the elite” on the instruction of the Spanish Crown.

The Seven remains the pride of the Havana Club portfolio, composed of rums aged for a minimum of seven years, some substantially older. What's so likeable about Havana 7 is its point of difference: This is a relatively dry, "generously light" style offering flavours of muted vanillas, light molasses, dried fruit cake and crisp oak. It's a suave spirit with enough depth and presence to enjoy simply over ice, but its individuality is its forte. Being less sweet lends it to super-refreshing cocktails. Swap it out over white rum in a Mojito with confidence. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... This is a perfect example of Cuban style rum (fitting since it’s actually from Cuba): There’s a huge amount of rich caramel character on the nose, with a light wood backing. Take a sip and you get a rush of heat, then smoothness: Sweet molasses and caramel, cane sugar, and a bit of cinnamon character in the finish. Very light on the wood, it veers into sweet vanilla — but it’s never cloying and never overly sugary. I’m deeply intrigued by the older Havana Clubs, though I can’t much imagine this being significantly improved by any additional time in oak. Best of all is the price, though you’ll have to buy it out of the country until the embargo is overturned. Come on, Obama! - drinkhacker.com

2014 Holmes Cay Clarendon EMB Single Cask 8 Year Old Cask Strength Jamaica Rum (750ml)
    JAMAICA
    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 61%

The third Holmes Cay rum to be imported this year is an independent bottling of 2014 pure pot distillate from Clarendon Distillery in Lionel Town, Jamaica, tropically aged for eight years in ex-Bourbon casks before being transported to New York State for bottling without adulteration. Rum aficionados will note the EMB mark which indicates ester levels between 240-250 gr/HL AA. That's in the medium range of the distillery's output, yet tasting it you might think otherwise. Beyond the remarkably lifted aromatics, there's a dense core of over-ripe tropical fruit and funk that's all the more notable given that no dunder was used in the ferment. At a whopping 61% ABV in 750ml bottles, this well-balanced, characterful, all-natural beauty lands at a reasonable asking price that's guaranteed to tempt purists.

Notes from the importers... Nose: Lots of luscious, sweet, overripe tropical fruit salad at first, with bubblegum, maraschino cherry and vanilla notes bringing up the rear! Palate: Big and boisterous on the palate – the 61% is quite well behaved- but it’s still 61 frikkin percent! Unbelievably silky and viscous though, big waves of sweet fruit salad get matched with cloves, vanilla and other biscuit spices. Finish: For such a big rum, the finish definitely measures up – lot’s of oomph –but no ouch here. Lovely and warming, the various spices stand out as the sweetness dries. This is a BIG, boozelicious, funky rum that is incredibly (almost scarily) approachable for a 61% rum. A splash of water, or some ice will temper that some, but take care – the smooth integration of the alcohol is a trap! Lots of sweetness in this rum that is prevented from becoming sickly by a finish that dries out leaving your palate ready for another!

    ABV: 40%
Owner, developer and farmer Spike Dessert fell in love with the Kimberley when he saw it in 1972. In 1995 with the onset of Sugar Cane being grown in the Ord River Valley, he saw a way to diversify his dream and created the Hoochery - the oldest continuously operating distillery in Western Australia. Now if you are wondering about the name Hoochery, the name was trademarked by Spike from the word Hooch which goes back to the Hutanuwu (later modified to Hoochinoo) Indian tribe of Alaska who made alcoholic liquor - this is until it became the more popular name for the illegal activity of bootlegging!

Built on his farm just outside of Kununurra in the heart of the beautiful Ord River Valley is a small pot distillery, which has the capacity to produce over 50,000 bottles of Rum a year. The Ord River Rum is made from local sugar cane, wet season rainwater and yeast that is all vat fermented, pot distilled, charcoal filtered, aged in oak barrels and hand bottled. The distillery is 100% Australian owned and operated.

Tasting note: [VAT 29 Bottled 16.10.2013] Polished copper brass colour. Offers up powerful scents of dilute golden syrup, liquorice bullets, raw sugar and vanilla. A silky entry leads into a concentrated, initially dry then bitter sweet and mildly prickly profile that includes fruit and nut dark chocolate, charry oak and liquorice bullets followed by sweeter golden syrup and brown sugar flavours to close. Good persistence and well balanced given the high ABV. The Hoochery project continues to evolve. 56.4%Alc./Vol.

First tasted 12.05.2008: Deep gold / brassy colour. Offers powerful, sweet scents of pine cone, golden syrup and brown sugar. Exceptionally concentrated, medium dry molasses flavours at first, becoming drier still at mid palate as oak and slightly bitter burnt sugar notes kick in. Overall, an intensely spicy, mildly prickly, slightly hot rum that’s still finding its balance (or perhaps the proprietors just like it this way). Lengthy molasses / golden syrup aftertaste. Better than Bundy. 88 points 56.4% Alc./Vol.

    INDIA
    $124. 99
    Bottle
    $1499.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42.8%

While most Indian rum is based on molasses or 'jaggery' (a hybrid of cane sugar and other sweeteners), Camikara is India’s first cane juice rum made using locally grown sugar cane. The Sanskrit name translates to “liquid gold”. Buttery, off-dry aromas of light honey and distant menthol are echoed on the palate where the sugars gravitate towards Madeira cake, countered by light tannins. The finish reveals mere hints of cinnamon chocolate, semi-ripe pineapple and light vanilla. Not complex, but obviously matured with sensitivity, place this somewhere in between an aged Cuban and Guatemalan in style - medium weight, elegant and not overly sweet. India makes a quality entry into the rum world! No colour, flavour, sugar or spices added. 42.8% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

In 1948, Sanchez Romate sent their most able foreman, Juan Jiménez Villalba, to Cuba to oversee the company's wines and spirits being sold there. There, Villalba observed that the used casks were well suited to the ageing of rum, made by the local Cuban distillers, including Ingenio Manacas. Following the Cuban Revolution, Villalba succeeded in recuperating some of these rum-filled casks and shipped them back to Jerez. Here he carefully tended the rum and created a small solera within the Sanchez Romate winery.

Today, the Ron Ingenio Manacas Extra Añejo (very old rum), is made with a selection of rums from across the Caribbean. Aged for 5 years in the Caribbean, the rums finish their maturation in Jerez for 3 years in Sanchez Romate's used Amontillado and Oloroso casks. 38% Alc./Vol.

Inner Circle Red Spot Rum 37% ABV (700ml)
    AUSTRALIA
    $39. 99

    $479.88 Dozen
    ABV: 37%

Inner Circle Rum was first produced by the CSR (Colonial Sugar Refinery) Company last century for the pleasure of its employees and very special clients - hence the name. From its first distillation, the objective was to make the best rum possible. In 1970, Inner Circle Rum was released into the Australian market and immediately created a cult like following. Those who found the Brand, ‘’only spoke of it in whispers but sung it’s praises loudly!’ It was originally available in three strengths, Underproof, Overproof and 33% Overproof. The label was instantly recognisable by it’s coloured circle and became identified as red, green or black dot. However, in 1986, CSR sold their rum distillery interests and Inner Circle was removed from the market. A great Aussie icon disappeared. In 2000 Stuart Gilbert, an Australian Olympic Yachtsman still lamenting the loss of his favourite rum, sought out and became acquainted with Malcolm Campbell who had been responsible for the distillation and quality control of Inner Circle from 1972 to 1986 when he supervised the very last bottling. To Stuart’s delight, Malcolm was only too willing to apply his many years of experience to the task of producing a rum deserving of the Inner Circle name. Inspired by this revelation, Stuart acquired the rights to the Brand name and now offers his product to the rum lovers of the world! In 2004, Inner Circle Rum purchased the Beenleigh Rum Distillery which, after some re-engineering, has begun producing the highest quality pot still rums. The Company has also purchased Offices in the old CSR Cooperage building at Pyrmont.

Presently the Rum is produced using the labour intensive pot still method, rather than the continuous distillation method used by most other commercial rums. The pot-still method is generally agreed to produce rums of a higher quality. Inner Circle Rum is made to the same blend and by the same blender as it was when it was last commercially available. The same quality that made it an icon brand has become the standard for the future of this 100% Australian owned company. No tasting notes available.

Inner Circle Green Dot 57.2% Dark Rum recently won the Jim Murray Trophy for the Best Rum at the prestigious 2004 International Wine and Spirit Competition held annually in London. Often referred to as “the Olympics of the beverage industry”, this competition is arguably one of the premier competitions of its type in the world and attracts the world’s best producers who showcase their products against their global competitors (www.iwsc.net ). As well as winning the Trophy for the Best Rum, Inner Circle Rums were also awarded 2 Gold Medals, 3 Silver Medals and 2 Bronze Medals. Considering there were many major global Corporations entering their branded Rums in this Competition, this small Australian Company has taken all before it, beating the best Rums from all over the world!

Other reviews... Rich copper hue. Robust toffee, floral, and brown spice aromas. A round, soft entry leads to a big, full-bodied palate with lush dried tropical fruits, burnt caramel, buttered roasted nuts, and lavish brown spices. Cargo Cult Dry Spiced Rum (700ml)
    $76. 99
    Bottle
    $923.88 Dozen
    ABV: 38.5%
A curiously named spiced rum which references events in the South Pacific during World War II. Islanders were living with little contact with the outside world when they saw a fabulous wealth of goods rain from the sky as the American Army parachuted in tons of supplies ahead of the arrival of its troops. The islanders had never seen such a bounty and even after the cessation of hostilities, continued to worship the "cargo cult" in the belief that the gods would again deliver the goods they'd so enjoyed during the war.

Brand creator, Jonny Croft, adds, "John Frum's Cargo Cult Rum", drew on yet another element of islander folklore. John was a really popular name among the American troops and they'd introduce themselves (to the islanders) with a handshake, 'hi, I'm John from Alabama,', 'John from Mississippi', etcetera. All the islanders could understand was 'John Frum', so that's what they called all these strangers".

The rum sources sugarcane from the Ramu River Valley in Papua New Guinea as well as Fiji.

Tasting note: Polished brass / brilliant clarity. Enticing and well defined aromas of vanilla custard, ginger bread and later hints of clove and baklava; contrasts on the palate which is unexpectedly dry, light to medium bodied, featuring cinnamon, ginger and light vanilla ice cream; builds towards the finish where the grassy rum-base peaks through. Fades baklava-like yet dry with a spicy warmth carrying the aftertaste. A versatile and tasty alternative to saccharine spiced styles. 38.5% Alc./Vol.

A molasses based rum from Trinidad Distillers Limited (TDL), labelled as 'Fernandes Distillery', a name that doesn't get seen a lot these days. The reference is a little confusing and information is scant. According to one source, Fernandes was a successful distillery producing up to 85% of Trinidad's rum in the 1960s, before being bought by TDL in 1973. The two distilleries were then combined on one site. This was distilled in 2009, so we can only assume it was produced using the Fernandes equipment. By the way, TDL is the only operational distillery in Trinidad since the closure of Caroni in the early 2000s, so these 'Trinidadians' are not very common. 456 bottles. 46% Alc./Vol.

Another Kill Devil, this time a 'mainlander' from Guatemala in central America. This one's reportedly from the Darsa distillery. For many, Guatemalan rum begins and ends with the 'Ron Zacapa' and lesser known, 'Ron Botran' range - both coming out of the same distillery or group: 'Industries Licoreras de Guatemala' (Plantation have also offered the odd bottling). Darsa is a seperate entity, but from the little information available, it appears to be a larger-scaled industrial level operation. Regardless, there's not a lot of Guatemalan rum produced, so this is a bit of an oddity. Other reviews... One of the first 1992s I think, definitely the first one I’ve had. That said, I am quite familiar with this rum already. Nose: Very rich and heavy, despite the dilution. I get notes of chocolate, prunes, dark caramel, molasses, salty notes, licorice perhaps, beet syrup, apricot, burnt wood, chestnut and much, much more. I think we might be having another very great one. Palate: Just like the Blackadder, it isn’t very thin and here the texture is even smoother all in all, probably because of the higher age. Plums, pencil sharpenings, herbs, wood, cocoa, chocolate, non-bitter espresso and salty ship planks are just some of my impressions. Especially the contrast between nose and palate is really interesting here but both surely add up. Finish: Medium long and given what we’ve had not too special but this slightly bitter, salty and woody combination works incredibly well. An amazing rum and I wonder what this would taste like at cask strength, but thanks to the next one we will be able to find out. 91 points - singlecaskrum.com

    ABV: 60.5%
Indie whisky bottler, 'Hunter Laing’s' new foray into the rum market offers a range of limited edition single cask rums from across the Caribbean. The collection references an old term for Rum (there were many). By 1650, the British (in Barbados) and French (on Martinique) had established the plantation system. The Caribbean was about to become a massive sugar making factory and distillery. The former waste product known as molasses was now being distilled, but mostly without expertise, and the results were according to one unknown source, "a hot, hellish and terrible liquor". In the English colonies it was called 'Kill Devil' (from its tendency to cause a nasty hangover or for its perceived medicinal power, take your pick) or 'rumbullion' (origins uncertain), which was shortened over the years to 'Rum'.

Panama is home to some seriously good yet too often overlooked rums, including brands like Ron Abuelo. This indie Panama edition was bottled at 60.5% Alc./Vol. so expect an intense rum. Limited to 264 bottles.

    MARTINIQUE
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
You could consider Agricoles as the Caribbean’s equivalent to Bordeaux, not only because they taste more "European", but because Rum Agricole is the only rum to be governed by an AOC (Appellation d’Origine Controllee, the French official label of origin). Just as with French wine and food, this AOC dictates how the spirit can be made, including the mandate to harvest sugar cane only in the dry season, the prevention of burning of the cane fields and a requirement to press sugar cane into cane juice within three days of harvest. Martinique is considered the spiritual home of the style, however other islands, such as Guadeloupe also offer outstanding Agricoles.

This expression from the La Mauny Company (established in 1749) was matured in oak for 18 months.

Lark Rum Island was developed by Ross Dinsmoor early in 2008 as Tasmania's first commercial Rum release in over 160 years. Produced from Queensland molasses, Larks do a slow fermentation for up to 3 weeks and then carefully double distill and finish the rum in a small batch 500lt copper pot still. French Limousin barrels that were used previously for aging port by the Seppeltsfield Winery in Barossa Valley are reassembled into 100 litre barrels to accelerate maturation. Matured for two years or more, it's only bottled “when it tastes right” rather than at a specific age.

Described as "a Scotch-and-cigar lover’s rum." this small cask aged, higher proof bottling (55% Alc./Vol.) is a limited edition. We have less than 10 bottles available.

1998 Leith Stillroom Bellevue Distillery 21 Year Old Cask Strength Rum (700ml)
    GUADELOUPE
    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 58.6%

Not stated but this must have been sourced from the Damoiseau distillery on the Bellevue au Moule estate. Tasted from a 30ml sample, it is a stunningly pure, fruit-laden rum that gets better with each sniff, mixing it up with allspice, (clove, cinnamon), light molasses, liquorice bullets as well as fresher notes of dried mango, plantain and papaya, surging through the mouth in a fabulously creamy attack that adds vanilla, ginger bread, banana fritter and grilled pineapple. There is a sense of Damoiseau's typical elegance and freshness here (possibly because it is largely agricole?), and the ride continues with molasses cake, brown sugar and caney / tropical notes combining with perfect sweet-dry balance and controlled alcohol. A cask strength beauty that exudes Caribbean character, distilled in March 1998 and matured in Guadeloupe until 2007 then shipped to the UK, it feels like it has been bottled at the optimum time. 220 bottles are on offer globally at a natural strength of 58.6% with no added sugar or filtration. Very limited stocks.

Other reviews... Very balanced and soft on the nose. A very fruity rum with fresh orange, dried tropical fruits a beautiful caramel sweetness and a fine wood note. On the palate, the rum comes with a creamy sweetness with caramel and roasted tropical fruits. The rum is gentle and balanced. It adds more wood and tannins and grassy earthy notes to the finish, which blend in wonderfully and give the sweet chocolatey finish some spice... - rumratings.com

Notes from the bottlers... On the nose, ripe bananas with spiced ginger sweetness; molasses and muscovado sugar, milk chocolate marzipan with nutmeg fading to sandalwood and fruit jam notes. In the mouth, pleasingly sweet bananas and roasted pineapples; fruit jam, dried figs and ginger with a long lingering dry peppery finish. A delight for lovers of sherry matured whisky.

Notes from the bottlers... On the nose, deliciously rich and malty with fragrant vanilla and Christmas cake. Toffee apple and coffee coming through with undertones of sense oak and buttery molasses. In the mouth, toasted oak with cigar and coffee bean bitterness developing into burnt notes of spiced fruit, thick treacle and a subtle note of camphor; a touch of smoke lingers with a long sweet finish.

    Bottle
    $2160.00 Dozen
    ABV: 59.6%

The 'real deal' in rum is on offer in a range of very limited single cask editions from UK bottler, 'Leith Stillroom'.
This one's sourced from Guyana's only operating rum producer. Located on the east bank of the Demerara River near Georgetown, all of the country's historical stills were consolidated at DDL's Diamond Distillery around 2000. Unfortunately, Leith's label doesn’t state which still (or stills) this particular bottling was created with. What we do know is that is was distilled in 2003, aged in an ex-Bourbon cask for 16 years and bottled all-natural. Rum purists can expect a full bodied and potent Demerara expression.

Notes from the bottlers... On the nose, fruity with red cherries and dates: coconut with ripe bananas and sweet melon; apricots with a hint of coffee beans developing into oak spices. On the palette, bananas with pineapple rind; molasses and sticky brown sugar; bitter dark chocolate and cinnamon, bursting with dried tropical fruit peels and gently spiced. 59.6% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Lemon Hart Original Demerara Rum (700ml)
    GUYANA
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Demerara styles are cherished by rum drinkers around the world for their bold, rich flavour and full-bodied complexity.

Lehman (“Lemon”) Hart’s destiny in the world of rum began close to 50 years before his birth on 31 October 1768 in Penzance, Cornwall, England. The year was 1720 when his grandfather, Abraham Hart, a young enterprising merchant who settled in Penzance from Germany, began importing and trading in rums sourced from various islands in the Caribbean. Some 80 years later Lemon Hart would transform the family business by creating a unique blend of the finest rums and subsequently receive the inaugural appointment from the Admiralty as supplier of rum to the British Royal Navy. Hart's efforts saw to the creation of his now famous British-style black rum, a premium blend of select single estate rums, distilled, Bourbon barrel-aged and blended on the East Bank of the Demerara River in the lush tropical country of Guyana. In 2010, the Canadian-based company Mosaiq Inc. acquired the Lemon Hart brand from Pernod Ricard and implemented “A Return to Heritage” initiative for the brand starting with the reestablishment of the Lemon Hart & Son company. Today, Lemon Hart & Son rums are considered among the more historically authentic expressions currently available.

While this fits the bill of a classic Demerara profile, it's toned down significantly at 40%. Its deep treacle appearance follows in moderate aromas of coffee flavoured milk, vanilla bean, date cake and sweet spices that carries through to a silky, seamless palate of the same; The spices pick up at the finish, where the sugars slightly recede, leaving you with Medjool dates, hints of ripe banana, cinnamon, clove and dark chocolate. Entry-level ABV makes for a feminine, characterful and dangerously drinkable option to more potent alternatives. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Wow...Like no other rum you've ever tasted. An explosion of banana, vanilla, shortbread, candied almonds and toasted oat aromas. Excellent and highly recommended. 92 points - Ultimate Spirits Challenge.

Notes from the producers... Well-balanced, velvety smooth taste. Complex notes of dark brown sugar and island spices (nutmeg, clove and cinnamon), vanilla bean, cocoa, dark honey, caramel and oak. Hints of English toffee, dried fruits (especially Sultana raisins, dates and apricots), dark bitter semi-sweet chocolate and a nice heavily steeped tea finish.

    GUYANA
    $350. 00
    Bottle
    $4200.00 Dozen
    ABV: 53.5%

Whichever way you spell it ('Morant' or 'Mourant'), anything this old from Guyana's legendary still is considered special, all the more so given that Diamond Estate is the only remaining rum producer in Guyana. Originally installed at the Port Mourant Estate (established in 1732), the nationalisation of the sugar industry lead to a centralisation of the various stills located around the country. It was first transferred to Uitvlugt, then in 2000 to its current home at Diamond Distillery along with all the other heritage stills and a modern multi-column set up. Built using Greenheart wood, a native to Guyana and mostly reserved for boat-building due to its ability to resist moisture, the wood is also well suited to distilling, stripping spirits of sulphites in the same manner that copper does. The Port Mourant and the Versailles single wooden pot still are the last of their kind in operation. The configuration of the former produces a typically heavy bodied and oily distillate, generally credited as being one of the definitive components in the old British Royal Navy blend. Nowadays, it's what makes El Dorado's brilliant 15 Year Old so tasty. Compared to the official cask strength release under El Dorado's 'single stills' label, the price of this considerably older Masam selection is very reasonable. Drawn from cask No. 26 and bottled at 53.5% Alc./Vol., 259 bottles are available globally. Nothing has been added nor has the liquid undergone chill filtration.

Notes from the importers... Nose: Tinned pineapple rings, damp grass, sugar cane juice, school bag fruit mix. Palate: Fermented fruit, graphite pencils, Chlorine, pear tarte tatin, pineapples. Finish: Custard finger bun.

As the label suggests, French oak maturation is the feature of this agricole-styled rum, which typically contributes more spice. The vessels in question are refurbished and re-toasted Cape red wine casks which hold the spirit for over twelve months. These must be produced in really tiny batches - in this case, just 24 bottles at a whopping 65% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... I wasn’t entirely sure what to make of this.  The minimal ageing toned down the rawness of an unaged spirit in a way that polished off some of the rough edges, so that was good; the additional fruitiness imparted by the Cape Brandy left in the staves (even after the sanding and scraping away of a few millimeters of impregnated wood) was nice – overall, it was a solid, strong drink. This, paradoxically, was also its weakness.  The strength was so great that it overpowered the subtle notes that a mere year-and-a-bit of ageing had provided, and it failed to cohere in a way that would allow the individual taste components to shine more. Here then was a rum that I felt could either use some more ageing, or some water, and indeed I did put a few drops into my drink and it became much more approachable that way. Still, it remained something of an odd duck, hard to pigeonhole, tough to nail down precisely.  It had aspects of an aged agricole, and points that reminded me of a Jamaican high-ester rum, all combined with the dampening anonymity of a column-still, high-proofed, lightly-aged filtered product from, say, Bacardi. - thelonecaner.com

    SOUTH AFRICA
    $180. 00
    Bottle
    $2160.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50.5%

Another ‘paddock to bottle’ release from a largely unknown South African trail blazer. This time it's a combination of spirits from a single still – one part barrel aged and quite woody, the other part unaged, funky and high in esters. The two were blended with the aim of creating a "slightly off-kilter Smith & Cross Jamaican style" (the blue and gold colours of the label are a homage to the brand). Danish seller and importer, Knud Strand played a key role in determining the ratios in the mix - which is why his name is prominent. This particular release has really put Mhoba on the map in Europe having received high praise from bartenders, pro-rum critics and bloggers alike. As with all Mhobas, there's no added sweetener, flavour or colour and bottling is done without chill-filtration. 50.5% Alc./Vol. - but the ABV will vary from batch to batch.

Other reviews... It’s when you smell and then taste the Strand 101° (58% ABV) rum from South Africa’s Mhoba, that you begin to get an appreciation for what this relative newcomer has accomplished in so short a time. The initial punch is all pot still, all righteous reek, all the time — there’s no holding back and it’s just fascinating to inhale. It smells sharply of paint thinner, nail polish, turpentine and rancid fruit left to go bad in the sun…after a tropical rain, with the steam still coming off the ground. It contains the tartness of a lemon meringue pie mixed up with green apples and gooseberries and a flaky, buttery crust. Sugar cane sap, cider, sour cream, brine, and the rising aromas off a loaf of sourdough bread fresh from the oven.  And over all that is the clear scent of candy floss and bubble gum. I mean, is that a great beginning or what? If I closed my eyes I could hear the Wailers... What’s clear to me is how good the rum really is. Just about everything works here, the strength, the still, the cuts, the assembly, the balance between babyhood and youth, herbals and woods. - thelonecaner.com

...I recall hearing that this might have been made for the cocktail crowd, as there isn’t much high-proof, sugarcane juice-based rum in the market. I definitely see the inspiration from Haus Alpenz’s Smith & Cross in this bottle: beyond the parallel blue and gold embellishment, as it’s high ABV, with a funky profile that works well as both a sipper and mixer. This is something for lovers of dirty distillate like Mortlach, Edradour and Clynelish. The wood influence takes on a mere supporting role, while most of the flavors here come from the blend of distillates. - malt-review.com

Besides whisky - possibly the only other wood-aged spirit capable of arousing the same passions comes from ‘the reed which brings forth honey’ (without the help of bees)– mainly because it’s capable of a similar dizzying complexity and diversity that whisky achieves. Rums are as diverse as whiskies, and much depends on how the distiller and blender create their product. Rum is also thought to be the world's oldest spirit with its cultural heritage centered in the Caribbean and its history inextricably intertwined with colonialism, slavery and the creation of capitalism. If you haven't been inspired to try the aged rums of the Caribbean then you’ve got a lot to look forward to.
