Entering the league of semi-mythical wood aged spirits, Caribbean rum doesn't come much rarer or more collectable than Caroni. The distillery was demolished in 2001 marking the end to 'heavy' rum production in Trinidad. Stocks are rumoured to be getting low, so whatever Caroni rum is still residing in cask will be edging ever closer to the very last. Famously produced using a wooden column still, well-aged expression are the rarest and most sought after. Bottled by Adelphi for their 30th anniversary, this single refill hogshead yielded 204 bottles at 56.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Collectable.

The reference to Gunpowder Proof is explained by the following history snippet: Prior to the invention of the hydrometer, the Royal Navy ship’s “Pusser” shutdown claims of watering down sailors’ daily tots by dousing a bit of gunpowder in the rum and attempting to light it. If the mixture ignited, the rum was “at proof.” If it didn’t, the Pusser might find himself tossed to sea. Amongst x-seamen, the consensus is that Pusser's is about as close to the authentic British Royal Navy edition as you can get. A true sailor's delight! 54.5% Alc./Vol.

Pussers have announced a new release in the form of Gunpowder Proof Spiced Rum. Blended to Admiralty specifications and aged for a minimum of three years in once-used charred oak bourbon barrels, it comes mellowed with a subtle blend of spices. These include banana, vanilla, chocolate, cinnamon and a hint of ginger resulting in an incredibly smooth spiced expression with genuine depth and power. Reviews on the blogosphere suggest Pussers is breaking new ground. At a significantly higher ABV, this is guaranteed to pop in mixed drinks and cocktails. Gary Rogalski (CEO of Pussers Rum) comments: “We had an outpouring demand from rum aficionados around the world to “spice-up” liquid history and I believe we have accomplished that goal. We have added a nuance of Caribbean fruits and spices without taking anything away from the blend’s classic Demerara wooden pot still heritage. The polar bear may seem a curious emblem to originate in Bundaberg, the heart of sunny Queenslands sugar cane country. The designer of the distinctive square Bundaberg bottle believed it was the perfect symbol for a drink that would “ward off the wickedest cold.”
The process followed in the production of Bundy O.P. (and indeed, most rum) is an intersesting one. At the factory in Bundaberg, the sugar cane (a tall, stout, perennial grass, Saccharum officinarum) is cut up and crushed between rollers, and the juice therefrom runs off into tanks. The water in the juice is evaporated and the remainder becomes a syrup which is boiled in a vacuum container. From this operation comes sugar and an uncrystallizable mass of a deep brown colour and treacly appearance, which is molasses. This is fermented and when distilled, rum is the result.At 57.7% alc/vol. Bundy O.P. is indeed perhaps best reserved for medicinal purposes. It delivers a deep, powerful spirit hit that warms the heart and rectifies the throat. Our recommendation: Turn the heater up, wrap yourself in blankets, pour an O.P. and sweat it out!

Located on the eastern coast of Central America, Rum is the national drink in Belize - no surprise, as the country's sugar cane is of the highest standard, representing a considerable volume of exports.The local rum industry is dominated by 'Travellers Liquor' (est. 1953), a distillery based in Belize City. Specializing in molasses based rums and mainly supplying independent bottlers, the company gained its name from the success it achieved in serving travellers along the main route to and from Belize City. This natural strength release from French independent "Compagnie des Indes was drawn from a single cask at natural strength.
Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Sandalwood, cinnamon, and a symphony of sweet spices. A floral touch of elderflower, the prelude of an intense mouth. Mouth: Powerful with still both the spicy and floral notes. It is a very well- balanced rum, its high abv makes for a contained powerfulness. Dead Reckoning 9 Year Old Bourbon Cask Single Blended Australian Rum (700ml)Queensland, AUSTRALIA$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 55%Aged for four years in tropical North Queensland before being sold on to a European rum broker where it has enjoyed a further five years of continental ageing. It was then chosen by Australian, Justin Boseley to be bottled as part of his Dead Reckoning line up. The aromas open slight and savoury until dried pineapple, hints of banana bread, cinnamon and light molasses pick up momentum in an appealing way. Starts grassy, natural; the mid palate quickly develops intensity and heat including flavours of butter menthol cough lozenges, vanilla, dried mango and pistachios. Finishes with a kick of alcohol, pleasantly bittersweet, medium-long and relatively elegant for all the mid palate power. Some minor rough edges, but overall feels confident, natural and unsweetened. 55% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 430 bottles produced.

2024 marks the first offering in the High Ester Blend Series, combining the La Bonne Intention (LBI) marque from the versatile French Savalle Still with the never-before released Diamond High Ester (DHE) marque from El Dorado's small John Dore Double Retort Copper Pot. Both distilled in 2012 and aged for 11 years in old Bourbon barrels, the ester count is reportedly over 1500g/hl (diffordsguide.com), however it's not certain whether that refers to esters after distillation (i.e.- before maturation) or after years of tropical aging. Regardless, according to more than one review, the results are pretty special, bursting with fruit, funk and floral notes. Bottled at a natural strength of 57% Alc./Vol., no outturn numbers are stated.
Other reviews... Dark amber color. Aromas and flavors of bananas foster, grilled pineapple dipped in chocolate sauce, baked cherries, and pecan pie with cinnamon with a round, lively, dry medium-to-full body and a warming, gigantic, long finish revealing nuances of chocolate creme brulee, ripe banana and pineapple drenched in caramel sauce and lit on fire, cinnamon and nutmeg with clove and ginger accents, and kola nut. ...There is a lot to be unpacked here and it rewards the patient. The palate is simply strong and very firm, fortunately without any kind of bitchy sharpness. It’s more like a very hot very sweet and very strong black tea. There’s salt, honey, olive oil, brown sugar, salted caramel ice cream, orange peel, sweet soya, and then a repetition of the sweet spices, freshly baked pastries, coffee grounds and unsweetened chocolate…and more of the spices mentioned above. The rum as a whole presents as somewhat dry, but it all leads to a really long, dry, aromatic that sums up the profile quite nicely, but without introducing any new elements. Well. I must say, I’m happy that this is not a rum which was twisted into some semblance of conformity by some moron’s idea of a formula. It’s quite original, while still hewing to a profile that is recognizably Demerara. To do so was probably the right decision, since, overall, the rum works extremely well. The high ester component is less assertive than the Jamaicans have led us to expect (that’s not a criticism, just an observation), yet it does well to balance off the more traditional flavours provided by the LBI, which, even back then, always seemed to be somewhat indeterminate... For that strength, that nose, those tastes and the overall quality, there’s nothing here that I don’t like. My suggestion would be to park the high ester expectations, enjoy the complexity of the blend, appreciate the strength, and maybe even drop the coin to get one for yourself. - thelonecaner.com
Notes from the producers... Aroma: Gusts of figs and start-fruit whiff ahead, trailed by cinnamon and vanilla notes, and balanced by the mellow aromas of toffee and honey, with hints of banana undertones. Taste: the brief introduction of orange peel is overlayed with rich spicy notes in the pallet, prominently vanilla with cinnamon. Clove, dark chocolate, and slightly burner caramel hit the mid-palate delicately, before a smooth transition to honey that softens the leathery, spicy finish. A rum to be sipped and savoured for its delicateness as much as its deep impact, lush minerality and dry finish.

Goslings Black Seal 151 Proof Rum (700ml)BERMUDA$144. 99Bottle$1739.88 DozenABV: 75.5%A family business for over two centuries, Gosling's was founded in 1806 by James Gosling and is Bermuda's oldest business house and largest exporter of locally made product. Originally called 'Old Rum', the company's flagship 'Black Seal Rum' was not sold by the bottle until after World War One, when it was packaged in Champagne bottles (the most widely available bottle at the time) and sealed with black wax, hence the name which has stuck. Over the years, Black Seal Rum has become synonymous with the Bermuda region - it is an essential ingredient in the local fish chowder, adds the island flavour to the 'Bermuda Rum Swizzle', as well as being the tempest in Bermuda's favorite cocktail, the 'Dark 'n Stormy'.
Goslings currently produce rums at three different proofs. Despite the 75.5% of Gosling's Black Seal 151, this is remarkably smooth.

In 2016 Velier launched the Habitation Velier portfolio - the world’s only range of Pure Single Rums. These are rums from a single distillery, distilled exclusively in pot stills. Complex and typically more suitable to long ageing, Velier's selections are entirely matured in the tropics, ensuring a natural, though accelerated development of flavours at the expense of a higher angel's share (>22%).
Always highly anticipated, Long Pond has become a Jamaican reference point for rum enthusiasts. This youthful edition was distilled from molasses in 2019 and aged for three years. It's worth noting that after closing from 2012 to 2017 for renovation, the Long Pond distillery was almost destroyed by a flash fire that sarted in the cane fields. It ravaged the fermentation room and fresh rum stocks (approximately 65,000 litres were destroyed). In that context, we're lucky to have received this rum at all. The flames spared its famous John Dore stills and no less legendary Blair column stills, prized for capturing the deeply mineral, empyreumatic and medicinal character for which this magnificent ester-rich marque is so well-known. 1200 bottles are on offer globally. Notes from the bottlers... Nose : Rich, heady. The incredible first nose is empyreumatic (apricot kernel, turpentine, diesel), exotic (persimmon, mango, guava), oxidative (balsamic vinegar, macerated fruit) and syrupy (hot cane sugar). Allowed to breathe, fragrances of vetiver, lavender honey, lime and jasmine give an idea of the breadth and complexity of the aroma palette. Palate : Taut, lively. On the attack, notes of petrol and very ripe mango appear alongside chocolatey and spicy (ylang ylang, clove, saffron) flavours. On the mid-palate, roasted pineapple and plantain banana juicily and smoothly enrich the flavour palette’s exotic register. The even fruitier end of the palate reveals notes of peach, pear, kaffir lime and coconut. Finish : Long, concentrated. The powdery finish (cocoa, rice pudding, grated ginger) is remarkably soft. The slender end of the finish gives its own take on the exotic register of the nose and palate. On the retro-nasal olfaction, a vanilla, spicy (cinnamon, ginger) and herbaceous (sugar cane) cane sugar spreads across the palate. The empty glass is in turn medicinal (elastoplast), camphoric and mellow (artichoke heart).

"Renegade" continues the Habitation Velier series, being the world’s only range of Pure Single Rums. Like "Single Malt Scotch", the term "Pure Single Rum" defines a rum from a single distillery, distilled exclusively in pot still(s). This particular release is essentially an indie bottling, and one that should appeal to rum chasers looking for something different.
Established in 2020, the man behind Grenada's Renegade Distillery is Mark Reynier, better known for reviving Bruichladdich on Islay and developing the Waterford Whiskey brand in Ireland. A chance holiday in Grenada had Mark fall in love with the island. The ethos for this project echoes what started with the aforementioned brands; Terroir! Taking a look at Renegade's distillery bottlings you'll see that each is segmented by the single estate from which its cane is harvested from. His rums are all agricole style and all ageing is done at the distillery. Given the great friendship between Reynier and Velier’s, Luca Gargano, Mark wanted Velier to have the honour of being the first ever to independently co-bottle (Velier’s preferred lingo) Renegade’s rums.
The result is said to be memorable to say the least - not only distinctive, but with a fascinating complexity that's summed up as "... a umami-bomb; a real bouillon cube of a rum, and on top of that it does this little magic trick of contrasting a great thicker texture with those multi-dimensional sweet, umami and savoury notes." Renegade comes aged in a combination of French and American oak casks and is bottled at a natural strength of 55% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Ooh this is surprisingly mellow - the savouriness and umami flavours are still present and accounted for, but here it’s alittle more tannic, but it still throws us some spiced honey alongside the olives, baked cheese and mushrooms. Little bit of dark chocolate. The tannins tense up more to give it quite a fair bit of dryness into the finish... Yet another twist! Here it’s more of a herbal jelly, rather grassy and of herbal dried roots, spiced honey and then it’s back to the oaky tannic dryness. At every leg of the tasting, I found myself delightfully greeted with (positive) surprises, each adding more nuance and complexity, with the utmost intensity that you wouldn’t believe can still remain cohesive. It’s a wonder how this stays so balanced and also friendly and approachable on the palate. What a stellar, stellar expression, good god! This is one I’m going to remember for a long time! Falling into the LROK marque (Light Rum Owen Kelly) at 200-400 gr/hlpa of esters, this unusual Velier brings some of whisky's historical practices to rum. Indeed, maturation in a combination of nine Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks has given it a patina that recalls certain Scottish single malts. This is a low ester Hampden, yet rich, dense and full of vigour. The flavour profile takes us into increasingly autumnal territories, eclipsed by a very pleasant herbal bitterness. Bottled at barrel proof with no sugar added. 60.5% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the bottlers... Aroma: Full, heady. Revealing delicious cocoa, liquorice, balsamic notes (cedar), autumnal tones (dried leaves, lichen) and herbal infusions (thyme, bay leaf), the aroma palette beams with fresh complexity. Allowed to breathe, citrus fruit fragrances (orange, mandarin), apricot, sandalwood and wax bring great nobility. Taste: Rich, dense. The flavour palette is full of energy and takes us to even more autumnal lands (porcini mushroom, truffle, chestnut). A very pleasant herbaceous bitterness (gentian, mint) arrives at the perfect time to refresh the taste buds. Emery cloth and walnut stain add the finishing touches to this colourful ensemble. Finish: Long, rich. Intensifying the aroma palette’s chocolate character, the tasting becomes very rich (chocolate cake, .clair). Increasingly powdery (cinnamon, rice, ginger), it lingers on flavours of raisin and dates. The empyreumatic retro-nasal olfaction (diesel, fuel oil) marks the Hampden signature.

In collaboration with the Barbancourt family and Vittorio Capovilla, Velier's Pure Single Rum collection sees the 'Providence' label make a return, this time with an age statement. Haiti's Port au Prince Distillery is the source of the 2020 edition, a blend of 14 ex-Caroni casks, distilled in a Müller pot still using fresh Cristalline syrup from cane grown in Saint-Michel-de-l’Attalaye. With an ester content of 265 g/hlpa and decanted straight from the casks, the rum is a bright and fresh expression underscored by notes of cane sugar, tropical fruits, florals, spices and vanilla. Tropically aged in Haiti and bottled in 2024 at 55% Alc./Vol., it's another testament to Haitian rum's ancestry and glory.
Notes from the bottlers... Colour: Vibrant Golden Yellow. Aroma: Rich and voluptuous. Opening with spices (pepper, clove), camphor and tropical fruits (ripe banana), the aroma palette then develops more vanilla and medicinal registers (arnica). Allowed to breathe, cane honey and warm cane sugar flood the air, pepped up by a very pleasant salinity. Taste: Lively yet creamy. Alongside delicate liquorice, honey (geranium) and vegetal notes of sugarcane, the flavour palette wavers between candied lemon and pineapple. Sweet spices (ginger, cinnamon) and vanilla pod softly coat the taste buds. Finish: Long, silky. The finish is juicy (pineapple), slightly tannic (cane wood) and heady (iris butter), before becoming richer (vanilla flan) and more tropical (coconut, lychee). The retro-nasal olfaction reveals candied notes (pear, Mirabelle plum, ginger), herbaceous tobacco leaf aromas and precious woods (sandalwood, cedar).

Renewed every year since 2019, Hampden's 2024 'Great House' marks the sixth opus in a series that pays tribute to the distillery’s feature building, constructed in 1779 by the Stirling family and still standing in its original form. Traditionally used to hold barrels until the 20th century, today it's become the main place of reception. The new rum bearing its name departs from previous releases, being a blend of several marques instead of just two, and sourced from three different vintages (50% 3 Year LFCH 2021, 20% 4 Year LFCH 2020, 15% 6 Year HGML 2018 & 15% 3 Year DOK 2021 - the latter fermented to the highest legal ester limit in Jamaica, i.e. 1500-1600 grams per hectolitre of alcohol.) Molasses and dunder (residue from previous runs) were distilled in a double retort pot still with full-term tropical maturation taking place in x-Bourbon barrels. If you're a fan of full-bodied single malts, there's no reason why funky, high-ester Jamaicans like this shouldn't be in your cabinet. The flavours may be more exotic, but the overall sensory experience is comparable. As per the last edition, Great House 2024 lands just shy of the historic 100 proof and allocations remain meagre. 57% Alc./vol.
Other reviews... Hampden‘s end-of-year seasonal rum release is here, as always providing a powerful look at the very best that this essential Jamaican distillery can produce and blend. The sixth edition is, as always, a different blend of rums than in prior years (this one hails from three different vintages), but it’s still a total banger. Aromas of torched, almost burnt pineapple find a happy companion in elements of grassy saltwater marsh and a dusting of gunpowder that’s on the verge of being ignited. The palate keeps the fires burning by pairing lit matchsticks with fresh papaya and guava, with a swath of citrus peel expressed across the top. The finish reminds me more of cotton candy than fruit (tropical or otherwise) or other sweeteners, hinting at Bubble Yum and winding down with a touch of almond butter, studded with raisins. ...I gave it a 10 cause at nose (and in the mouth) it's incredibly rich, long and powerfull. It's as funky as a great Caribbean rum should be but it's not too aggressive so you don't really feel the abv. What I loved about this edition, is the intense fruit smells you get as soon as you open the bottle and (my taste) the strong dried apricot feeling. - rumratings.com
Notes from the producers... Nose: Full with a lot of tension. Mint, ripe mango and dry earth form a subtle and precise first sequence of aromas. Quince jelly, bramble jam and orange marmalade then set a richer tone. Palate: Clear and lively. The flavour palette is at first abundantly tropical (coconut, mango, passion fruit) and matches the nose perfectly. Alternating between warm and refreshing sequences, it offers a taste of chocolate drops, fragments of slate and mint tea. Finish: Rich and invigorating. The intense finish lingers on herbaceous (Havana cigar) and peppery tones. Diverse infusions of red fruits and marshmallow bring freshness. Increasingly rich, the finish ends on cranberry and raisin.

Hampden Estate 8 Year Old Pure Single Jamaica Rum (700ml)JAMAICA$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 46%Velier has more or less had exclusivity on Hampden rum bottlings since 2018, a collaboration that's likely to continue through their new organisation of La Maison & Velier. However, Luca Gargano makes it clear that this is not a Velier release, despite the similarity in packaging. After 250 years of exporting in bulk to independent bottlers and merchants alike, Hampden have finally released a rum under their own label. In this case, Velier is merely the distributor.
Thirty one barrels make up the blend. All the rums were derived from fermentation with wild yeasts (or dunder) "...a process not totally dissimilar from sour mashing in Kentucky, which uses the spent lees of distillation to cultivate flavour producing bacteria. The muck that's harvested from those pits is added to the fermentation to create one of the most biologically complex worts in the world of distillation and the resulting spirit is packed full of complex esters."
Add to that eight years of 100% tropical aging (arguably equivalent to over two decades in a European climate) and you have a drier styled rum with all the funk and complexity you associate with Jamaica's best. Cut back with local spring water to 46% Alc./Vol., no sugar or flavouring is added.
Other reviews... Although not my favourite, this is real quality stuff. Unsweetened, uncoloured, single pot-stilled rum. All ingredients declared, the standard Luca Gargano and Richard Seale are trying to get the industry to aspire to. Nose very funky, in keeping with the esters declared on the label. Gluey, acetone entry, fading into dried bananas. In the mouth it's a beast, punching above its 46%. Alcohol and other volatiles kick your palate, there is a long spiritey finish, but a shortage of dried fruit and wood. Bone dry, sweetness 1/5. In the throat there is a burn that goes up your nose and follows down into your gullet. This is not a subtle rum. It'll make you sit up and take notice of what is the craft of double retort pot stills. The complete opposite of Zacapa / El Dorado / Diplomatico. I'm not sure whether I'd buy it again, but I loved the experience of unusual, but serious quality. - rumratings.com

Silky smooth and soft on the nose, the aromas conjure honey drizzled buckwheat pancakes, candied pineapple, hints of papaya and light molasses. Almost Jamaican in its insistence on dark, heavy fruits, the noticeable alchohol, mouthfilling mid-palate and lengthy bittersweet finish makes this feel north-Caribbean more than South American. The provenance of this bottling is unknown, however the flavours of sweet nuts, dark brown sugar, caramelised fruit, cigar leaves and oaky spices do reflect the Zacapa style. Deeper and darker than Green Dot, the high ABV is immediately apparent: prickly wafts carry aromas of cinnamon, vanilla wafer, sticky date and peppercorns. Tastes like more column still than pot still with a supernova of bittersweet flavours that's somehow light on its feet: Vanilla cream and dark chocolate on entry, the mid-palate is oily and mouth coating then finally estery through the finish. Attractive aromas hint at cream sponge cake, honey crackles, vanilla wafer and light molasses. Entry is gently bittersweet with near zero burn. Middle stage offers appealing coffee, raw sugar and vanilla flavours. Ends clean, delicate, warming and medium long. Very accessible at natural strength. 57.2% Alc./Vol.

It's good to see other Caribbean producers following the lead of bottlers like Velier with unadulterated, high strength rums. Mount Gay's 'The Port Cask Expression' is the third release in the Master Blender Collection that began in 2018 with an unusual Islay whisky cask-finished rum. Once again, Trudiann Branker is behind the composition and this time she’s employed Port casks, primarily because they're rarely used at the distillery. In fact, at least one report suggests that this is the first time in Mount Gay’s long history that they’ve used Port casks for aging. Specifically, the rum is a combination of Port-aged and Port-finished liquid, distilled on a traditional column still and aged for five years in Tawny Port casks, blended with pot still rums, aged for 14 years, and then finished in Tawny Port casks for a final twelve months. The exact percentages of each aren’t specified. Apart from having nothing added, it also comes non-chill filtered for maximum flavour and mouthfeel. 6570 bottles are available globally. If you like your rum neat, this is recommended with a piece of dark chocolate. 55% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... The Port influence isn’t immediately evident on the nose. It’s rich with baking spice, some stewed orchard fruit, and plenty of classic rum esters from the pot still. As it opens, more dried red fruits emerge with a bit of marzipan in the mix, but on the whole, it’s not nearly as jammy or fruit forward as some other wine-finished rums I’ve encountered. The palate isn’t as restrained, but the Port is still not the only star of this show. The same sweet apple notes that dominated Trudiann’s first Master Blender release shine through with the Port overtaking some of the traditional vegetal sugarcane notes and injecting currants, juicy prunes, and black cherry in their stead. At cask strength, there’s still that classic Mount Gay dryness and spice, despite the syrupy and sweet Tawny addition. It’s a velvety and beautifully balanced rum that finishes as rich as it starts with the Port influence on full display in a lingering rinse of raisin and cherry juice. - drinkhacker.com

Conceived by Velier's Luca Gargano, the Papalin project is dedicated to Caribbean styles of yesteryear, though specifically to rums of the late 1800s when Jamaican traders began to create blends from different distilleries. Myers’s and John Wray Nephew are two famous historical examples. In addition to exporting rums to Europe, they also produced their own blends, never specifying their origins. In the last seventy years an increasing number of European brands surfaced, then in the 1970s, distilleries began selling their own products. In light of all these changes, Papalin marks a return to the ancient tradition of rum blending, now with a transparency that will be welcomed by rum purists.
The label's first release was dedicated to Jamaica. The spotlight now shifts to Haiti, with a rum distilled from sugar cane juice, sourced from five different distilleries: Sajous, Vaval, Casimir, Distillerie de Port-au-Prince and Le Rocher. A total of 32 selected casks made the cut, all entirely aged in the tropical climate, with maturations taking place in ex-cognac, ex-bourbon and ex-whisky barrels. Technically, this is classified as a vatted rum. It's considered a versatile, accessible introduction to Clairin. 6000 bottles are available globally, and despite being young, its intriguing character has surprised many seasoned tasters. 53.1% Alc./Vol.

From the small island of Marie-Galante, a part of Guadeloupe, about one hour boat-ride from the mainland. Here the sugar cane fields, distilleries and warehouses sit in a pristine environment, employing indigenous sugarcane varieties and distilling exclusively from fresh pressed cane juice.
Distillerie Poisson (est. c.1860) is the oldest operation of its kind on Marie-Galante and custodian of one of the most venerable stills in the Caribbean. Built in 1916, not much has changed in the last century, but in 2007, Guadeloupe native, Jean-Cedric Brot purchased the distillery and committed to reinvigorating the storied spirits that made it famous. He has named his brand after Père Labat (Father Labat), a multi-talented French Dominican missionary who introduced Charentaise distillation, the same method used to make Cognac. It made for a rum that was more "floral and round instead of sharp and burning". Today, four kinds of cane are used: red, white, blue, and gray. Some are grown on the estate, some are purchased from local growers. All are hand-cut and brought to the distillery by ox-drawn carts. 72 hour fermentations yield a vin de canne at 5% abv. Distillation takes place in one of two copper creole column stills which have eleven stripping plates and four rectifying/enriching plates. The spirit comes off the still between 69% and 71% abv. The Rhum blanc is placed in open top wooden foudres for 10-15 days and demineralized water is added to bring it down to proof. Pere Labat has several variants, but this edition is bottled at "Island Proof". Aside from being the ultimate choice for a Tiki Punch and a stunner in Daiquiris, it is considered by some as one of the best rhum agricoles in the world. The Pintail brand was originally established by Matthew Gloag and Sons in the 1930s and focussed on bottling dry sherries. After the trademark lapsed it was picked up by Keith Bonnington (Keeper of the Quaich and owner of The Whisky Cellars Independent Bottlers). He's now using it to market a range of hand picked spirits and wines. Whiskies are finished in rare (and often sweet) wine casks, but he has access to other categories too, such as this rum, composed of two barrels from a Single Origin Panamanian estate, matured for a full fourteen years in x-Bourbon casks. Bottled at 'overproof' strength for a full aroma, mouthfeel and flavour, vanilla, ginger biscuits, chocolate orange and charred oak are keynotes to look out for. 54% Alc./Vol.

A blend of rums from Barbados, Guyana and Jamaica in the overproof dark style, replacing Plantation’s 'Original Dark Overproof' which was a Trinidad exclusive. "O.F.T.D." stands for "Old Fashioned Traditional Dark". In its conception, Alexandre Gabriel, Master Blender for Plantation Rum, brought together six rum luminaries - Jeff "Beachbum" Berry from Latitude 29, Martin Cate from Smuggler's Cove, Paul McFadyen from Trailer Happiness, Paul McGee from Lost Lake, Scotty Schuder from Dirty Dick, and Dave Wondrich, cocktail historian extraordinaire. After many tasting and blending sessions they formulated a rum ideally suited for use in top-shelf Tiki and tropical cocktails.
Distinguished by its deep topaz colour and super aromatics, this powerhouse is clearly made for boozy tropical libations and bar circuits. Banana fritter, dried mango, dates and molasses are up front with air contact adding pipe tobacco, balsa wood and dark chocolate. The intensely caney / grassy entry cranks up with flavours of raw sugar, liquorice strap, fruit mince pie and all-spice, capping off a surprisingly well balanced overproof expression with profound depth and staying power. Mix with abandon, but OFTD stands up as a drink in its own right. 69% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... The color is a nice toffee-coffee brown, which seems like it should be nice and easygoing, not an overproof bruiser. The nose quickly proves you wrong, offering a mix of Madeira, burnt sugar, black coffee, coal fire, and a mix of Caribbean spices… cloves, anise, and salty licorice. Very hot with alcohol (as it should be), this heat spills over into the palate, which offers a heavily charred barrel influence to dry out the rich molasses underpinning it. The secondary character includes some lingering orange peel, more of those heavy cloves, ginger, some petrol. It’s slightly nutty at times, and even a little floral if you can push past some rather intense and tarry licorice notes. If nothing else, at least the heavy amount of alcohol makes for a finish that gently burns away anything lingering on the palate, leaving behind some light but not unpleasant notes of tar and coffee grounds. It is tough to make a great overproof rum, but our friends at Plantation have done quite a good job of it. ...Some of the world’s best rums are being made by a man who cut his teeth on Cognac, Alexandre Gabriel, owner of Maison Ferrand. Not long after reviving that brandy house, Gabriel turned his attention to rum, creating Plantation and endowing it with a Cognac distiller’s sense of balance, elegance and variety. OFTD (Old-Fashioned Traditional Dark), created with input from rum specialists including cocktail historian David Wondrich and tiki expert Martin Cate, is a blockbuster. Earlier Plantation dark rums had relied exclusively on Trinidadian stocks, but OFTD instead blends Jamaican rum’s oily funk with Guyana’s focused intensity and Barbados’s lithe grace—all in a powerhouse package at 138 proof. Summing up, the Plantation Old Fashioned Traditional Dark is a deserved yet unusual — perhaps even controversial — entry to the Key Rums series. It is a multi-country blend, not something that showcases a certain country. Yes, it was deliberately created to do only one thing, and therefore its value as an all-round consumer drink is somewhat circumscribed; yes it’s really strong, and sure…in that segment it stays and plays. Yet as I have suggested here, it has qualities over and above all that. It supercedes the modest aims of its creators, to the point where it actually can stand by itself. It remains, nearly a decade after its introduction, one of the most reviewed, commented on and widespread rums around and if its shine is less now than it was when first introduced and now that it has stiffer competition, there is no reason to doubt either its many uses or availability. It remains, for all its parent company’s woes, an incredibly popular and in-use bar staple and drinking adjunct to this day. It demonstrates, if nothing else, how well the Caribbean distillates work with each other in a way that is not often seen. Reported to be a collaboration between the Linge family of Berling, direct descendants of a famous Haitian rum dynasty (Barbancourt), and La Maison & Velier, Providence represents the first aged rum of the Distillerie de Port-au-Prince. Based on traditional methods, it's produced using syrup from an ancestral Cristalline sugar cane variety from the fields of Michel Sajous, located in Saint-Michel de l’Attalaye, 150 kilometers north of the capital. Fermentation is carried out using selected yeasts and dunder from previous distillations, allowing for the development of impressive aromatic complexity. The must obtained after fermentation is distilled in two stages in a copper still, heated in a bain-marie, designed by German boilermaker Muller. The final distillate was matured exclusively in ex-Caroni rum casks for three years and then reduced to 52% before bottling. Summed up as "exotic and expressive" and declared "Robot free" on the label.

I found out that it needed to rest for at least 15 minutes and at 30 minutes the flavours just come at you. Intense and fruity with nice spices and cane. The Dutch-owned distillery was established around 1750, housing double wooden pot stills which produced a characteristically heavy rum. Matured for two years in the tropics followed by 21 years in an ex-cognac cask in Europe, Edition No.6 is another confronting, challenging Uitvlugt that takes time to get your head around - its diverse aromas evoking rubber, tarmac, pineapple husks, dried fruits and dried herbs; the flavours are dryish, fruity, tropical but not sweet with low-burn spirit heat. Giving more richness at the finish, dried tropical fruits and fresh grassy notes rise, as does white pepper and funk. Other reviews... There's a wee flag with fleur-de-lis on the label, what's that, Quebec? Remember there's a Bellevue in Guadeloupe and a Bellevue on Marie-Galante, while Marie-Galante is administratively part of Guadeloupe. Did you get it all? Colour: deep gold. Nose: kerosene and olive oil, plus brake pad dust and dried mackerels, that's what I'm getting. Also black-olive focaccia. It's true that Bellevue can get pretty extreme. With water: stunning heady flowers, wisteria, jasmine, honeysuckle… Plus this feeling of having just opened the Kardashians' own family-pack of liquorice allsorts. Mouth (neat): totally grand Bellevue, full of menthol, liquorice, salt, rotting bananas, acetone and varnish. What does the people want? With water: more, much more salty liquorice, Scandinavian-style. Finish: very long, salty and full of liquorice, with some kind of smoke in the aftertaste. Juniper wood? Also blood oranges and pineapples. Comments: sure this wee Bellevue doesn't go in for subtleties, but should you be a member of the Liquorice Maniacs, you'll just need this bottle. Guyana is justly famous for its rich, heavy Demerara rums, named for a local river and produced from both pot and column stills. These can be aged for long periods (25-year-old varieties are on the market), but are more frequently used for blending with lighter rums. First served to English sailors in Jamaica in 1655, Woods was created for use by His Majesty's armed forces, remaining a mainstay of British naval life for over 300 years. Now produced at Guyana's Daimond Distillery using black strap molasses and the last wooden stills in the world, the blend contains both pot and (mostly) column distilled rums aged between 1.5 and 3 years. Probably the darkest rum on the market today, this brown sherry to treacle coloured spirit needs time to build on the nose and palate, and despite the mega alcohol is deceptively light on entry, but fans out with fantastic depth, suggesting molasses cake, treacle and liquorice strap before finishing with notes of coffee cake, chico lollies and dark chocolate. Arguably more dry than sweet, without the pronounced 'bitter sweetness' you might expect at this potent strength, it winds up dripping with treacle, molasses cake and chewy oak. The nose is a little shy, and don't go looking for complexity, but it will add a prototypical Demerara quality to Tiki cocktails. Old school sailors will keep it neat or add sweet mixers to taste. 57% alc./vol.

Distilled in the iconic Forsyths Double Retort Pot Still at the Estate in Jamaica in 2011, then tropically aged, the initial 8-year spell in ex-Bourbon wood was followed by a further 3 years in barrels that had previously contained Cognac. Eight casks make up this limited edition release, equating to 1056 bottles world-wide. 55% alc./vol.

Something very unusual for rum lovers here. For those new to the series, the Habitation Velier selections represent the world’s only range of Pure Single Rums (think of them as the rum equivalent of single malt whiskies) - in other words, rums from a single distillery, distilled exclusively in pot stills. Every one is a reference point for each distillery’s unique pot still. The rums are entirely aged in the tropics, ensuring a natural, accelerated maturation compared to European or 'continental' ageing. The downside is a higher angel's share.
Continueing Velier's vision is this expression from Mhoba in South Africa, the result of a partnership between Luca Gargano and Robert Greaves, the founder of Mhoba. Nestled amongst the rolling hills of the Onderberg district of Mpumalanga, Mhoba harvests the Nkomazi variety of sugar cane from a farm adjacent to the distillery. The cane is hand cut and pressed by an in-house mill. The cane juice (not molasses) is fermented in part by a local baking yeast as well as wild yeasts. Distillation is conducted with a pot still designed by Greaves. The particularity of this still is to favour a maximum reflux in order to develop heavy and particularly aromatic distillates.
Aged for four years in ex-bourbon casks at the distillery in the tropical environment, the share the angels take is over 22%. As usual, Velier have bottled this without reduction, at 64.6% with 246.1 gr/HLPA of esters.

Notes from the bottlers... On the nose, aromas of old rubber tires and unripe banana mix with overripe paya, guava and powerboat petrol. A lighter and brighter side shines through on the palate, with glorious powdered citrus fruit juice and oversweet lemonade, sherbet dip, Italian ice and blue raspberry softening that boozy funk from the nose.

2008 Adelphi Clarendon Single Cask 12 Year Old Cask Strength Rum (700ml)JAMAICAReduced from $240.00$199. 99Bottle$2399.88 DozenABV: 56.8%Jamaica's Clarendon Distillery (est.1949 and initially owned by the Monymusk Sugar Factory) is a large plant, home to about 5-6 column still marques and about 20 pot still marques. Amongst these is Monymusk, named after one of the oldest sugar cane plantations in Jamaica, located in Lionel Town, Clarendon. To confuse matters, there's also a brand called 'Monymusk', but that has only been around since 2012. The historical connection remains, as Clarendon is located on six acres in the Monymusk Estate. About 90% of the total output goes to Diageo's Captain Morgan and Myers brands, which in total accounts for about 60% of all Jamaican bulk rum exports. In short, Clarendon is a hybrid set up - on the one hand churning out industrial column still distillate for global brands, while on the other creating various esoteric and highly-regarded light and heavy ester pot-distilled rums. Obviously, this selection falls into the latter category. Although Adelphi aren't giving much away, it's rumoured that this was fully matured in a refill Madeira cask. At a potent 56.8%, it promises to deliver an all-natural and truly evocative Jamaican experience. From a run of 402 bottles.

Few are aware that they diversified into rum back in 2013. It's taken a while to get the formula right, but this is getting closer. Initially dense, woody and closed, the aroma needs time to pick up steam, developing with notes of dried mango, molasses cake, cinnamon and ginger bread. Bristling wood spices and nipping alcohol come with the territory, however classic Demerara flavours like fruit cake, cinnamon, bitter dark chocolate and dry molasses only gain definition at the last. While it shows impressive staying power, overall, this remains an understated, unadulterated style that could be mistaken for a rum-finished version of their single malt (perhaps they've matured this in x-single malt casks?) For that reason it should entertain malt whisky drinkers and rum enthusiasts in equal measure. 58.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered

The casks used for BCS release #1 rum were on an Atlantic voyage that spanned almost a year before they reached Kentucky. Rather than issuing them as single barrels, experiments with countless combinations came up with this outstanding blend of vintage rums from Barbados, Jamaica and Guyana. It looks to be a real gem from BCS. The bad news is, we have next to nothing from an outturn of 483 bottles. 62.1% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Strong notes reminiscent of tepache, a Mexican fermented beverage made from pineapple rinds. Others emerge - fruity notes of green grapes and lime hull, earthy notes of oyster shell and potting soil, and very Jamaican vegetal notes of Kalamata olive, caper, pine needle tea, scallion, and pollen. Palate: Comparatively gentle, the Guyanese lending demerara syrup, purple plum, and crème de cassis, the Barbados bringing characteristic florals and spice: rosehip tea, cinnamon, and star anise. These notes are held together by a fresh maritime character -- seaweed, sea salt, and a little glycerine richness. Finish: The Jamaican hogo is back, as is the tepache, but it’s also spicy, with notes of ginger, turmeric, and catnip. Lychee makes an unexpected appearance.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: The esters are so concentrated and varied that the aroma presents first with the unmistakable monolithic smell of funky Jamaican rum. Slowly, the Barbados and Demerara rums drive a wedge into the funk and focus the profile first around berries and flowers. There’s a fatty element at times reminiscent of tahini or browned butter. A kiss of wood spice, sauna and nutmeg is present. Palate: The alcohol keeps the sweetness in check, the tannins are modest and sandy. Tthe flavors mirror the nose: Blackberry, rosehip, nutmeg, tahini. The mineral side really shines and gives a maritime feel: crushed oyster shell, kelp, fried clams, dry vermouth. Finish: The tropical fruits pop, with lime zest, lychee, navel orange, and pineapple. Some soft resinous touches of mastic and pine pitch. A hint of savory enoki mushroom and sweet crab meat.

For the fourth evolution of the Master Blender's Reserve, Oliver Chilton has looked to create a blend that is closer to the original Navy rum with a heavier mouth feel and rich notes of wood smoke, espresso and cacao. As always, he has put his own spin on the assemblage, this year including a rum from Grenada, distilled in 1993, to add depth and accentuate a rich orange oil notes from the Perpetual Reserve. As always, the blend begins with rum drawn from the previous year's Master Blender’s Reserve - this works in a similar way to a Solera, whereby one-third of a blend is held back for another year and blended again. In 2023, casks were selected from Trinidad, Barbados, Jamaica, Guyana and Grenada (see below for a comprehensive breakdown). Notably, a higher proportion from Guyana component was included, the thick liquorice and muscovado in this rum helps recreate the unique flavour profiles they exhibited over half a century ago. These five blends were then brought together and married with the Perpetual Reserve, as well as some of the original Navy Rum from 1970, keeping the liquid history alive. Chilton comments, "With a larger focus on older rums from Guyana and the addition of 30-year-old rum from Grenada, a real sense of maturity and status has developed. It is such a privilege to be able to keep back stock from each blend to mature on and use as the heart of the next iteration of Master Blender’s Reserve, reimagining a blending technique used for so many decades by the rum blenders of the Navy.” 54.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Notes from the producers... NOSE : Cooked blood orange studded with cloves blends with notes of ruby port and cinnamon . PALATE Initially flavours of liquorice sticks, toffee and cherry drops create a rich and full palate with orange marmalade cutting through. Black Tot Master Blender's Reserve Cask Strength Rum (700ml) - 2021 Limited Edition$260. 00Bottle$3120.00 DozenABV: 54.5%Another first class blending achievement, this time with an Australian twist.
While comparisons with the inaugural release are inevitable, the Master Blender's Reserve is not simply a slightly older version of last year's 50th Anniversary rum, but a different composition altogether. Different countries, still types and ages have contributed with Head Blender, Oliver Chilton opting for a 'fruitier' expression. It also celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the last rum ration given to the Australian Navy after separating from the Royal Navy, although Australians serving on British ships could still receive rum - in 1921 this was also forbidden. Adding substance to the sentiment, 6.7% of the blend is from Beenleigh Distillery (ten years aged in Queensland and four years continentally).
At its heart is the 'perpetual' base spirit (14% of last year’s 50th Anniversary release), re-casked into ex-sherry butts and blended with rums between 9 and 24 years old from Guyana, Barbados, Trinidad, Jamaica. These make up the majority of the blend. Even from a 20ml sample they come through powerfully on the nose which has a drier, well-aged Demerara-like feel, developing dense aromas of fruit cake, bush honey and zesty peel matched by nutmeg, vanilla, ginger and cinnamon. Stay with it longer and you'll discover even more. The early palate stages are a little understated - call it elegant (this is anything but an overly-sweet contemporary style). Off-dry flavours of liquorice, roast nut, coffee, brown sugar, dried banana, leather and spice dovetail into a long, fanning flourish of intense, estery complexity. That sensational late burst seems to be Chilton's signature, and it unfolds in slow motion, drawn out with molasses cake, warming cinnamon and bittersweet dark chocolate as well as hints of exotic fruits. The alcohol is less and less discernible with each sip, inverse to the stunning persistence of flavour. 6000 bottles are available globally, however Australia's allocation will be closer to several hundred. Other reviews... I'm always finding it rather moving when very altruistic distillers and master blenders accept to part with their own reserves. By the way, for the first time distinguished Master Blender Oliver Chilton has added some Australian rum to the Black Tot composition; could that be Beenleigh? Other than that, it's all a 'British' rum with Guyana, Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad. Colour: gold. Nose: you would almost believe you could read through this one on the nose, finding the Jamaican(s), Trinidadian, Bajan… It's pretty estery, diesely, with some meatiness (bacon) and quite some liquorice and star anise, then overripe bananas and fermenting pineapples. Touches of olives, which I always find very Jamaican (although I've never checked if they were growing olives in Jamaica) and a handful of raisins. With water: gets drier, on many herbal teas and even more liquorice (sticks). Very fresh allspice mix. Mouth (neat): ultra-classic rich British-style rum, with heavy liquorice, petrol and rotting topical fruits, and a spiciness that may stem from the Australian. Just a very wild and silly guess. With water: very good, a notch lighter perhaps (Barbados?) with those raisins coming to the front and a few violet sweets in the background. But liquorice keeps running the show. Finish: rather long and quite salty. A little more pipe tobacco, molasses, prunes and raisins. Comments: excellently constructed and very 'British Navy' indeed. Why not also do a French Marine Nationale rhum, one of these days? 87 points - whiskyfun.com
...The length on the finish is just right and the flavours linger for long after the liquid has evaporated. As mentioned already this is quite an intense rum so you will probably take time between each sip to savour the finish. I certainly have anyway. As is often the way my previous years bottling is long gone. So I can’t do a head to head comparison. I do know that this is definitely in the same league as the 50th Anniversary and I really have no hesitation in giving a rum as good as this full marks. Notes from the bottlers... Cinnamon sticks, cooking in brown butter, with nutmeg and cloves. Overripe mangoes and baked bananas, with dusty dark chocolate. More citrus notes build in the glass - satsumas and freshly squeezed navel oranges blend with juicy nectarine and cooked honey. In the background, a dense oily note complements the zesty flavours and merges with herbaceous notes of mint and lemon thyme. Taste: At first, a huge hit of concentrated orange and mango juice, with fresh mint and golden brown caster sugar. The sweetness evolves into milk chocolate and salted caramel, while the fruit seems to become denser, bringing in flavours of guava and passion fruit. Another sip brings orange blossom, balanced by runny honey. Finish: Clementine and mandarin make up a citrus salad, evolving with a pleasing dryness reminiscent of thyme and oregano. Right at the very end, a hint of diesel oil.
