Armagnac

Cognac and Armagnac are only 128 kilometres apart, but as brandies they're quite different in style. While Cognac strives for a smooth, supple spirit, Armagnac tends towards a richer, sometimes more pungent, earthy character with a dancing fire at the back of the throat and lots of dried fruit flavour. Delve into the rustic charms of Gascony's native spirit and discover the best selection of Armagnac online right here. To learn more about this fascinating region, click here.

    1969 Delord Bas Armagnac (700ml)
    Armagnac, FRANCE
    $599. 00
    Bottle
    $7188.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
A ’69 Armagnac at a great price, perfect for a 50th birthday gift in 2019. These extra old, vintage dated brandies are always very limited, so buying early is recommended. Bottled in 2018.

Other reviews... Imagine you can get these old armagnacs for a song and a dance. Say around 100 Euros. Colour: deep amber. Nose: this old baby is struggling a bit after the last 1973 but it's making quite a creditable job. It's a more traditional style once again, rounder and softer, more on raisins and chocolate (you may add prunes as usual) with a kind of small earthy/minty side that only comes with great age. I mean, in spirits. Mouth: really good, but nothing really special and I wouldn't say the great age of this armagnac brought much more complexity. It's even a notch drying after a few seconds (cocoa), other than that it's all raisins. Finish: short, raisiny, with some tea (tannins). Comments: it's actually very very good, it's just that it lacks character. A smooth and easy old one, not much to add. No real malternative, in fact, just very good armagnac. 82 points - Serge Valentin, whiskyfun.com

Situated in Bas-Armagnac, Delord's distillery is to be found in the village of Lannepax, the ancestral home of the Delord family. They comment, "Our old Sier Armagnac alambics, that we wouldn't part with for all the gold in the world, produce less than 30 litres of eau-de-vie an hour. Our cellars contain our old treasured vintages and include more than 700 oak barrels that protect and age the Armagnac eau-de-vie dating from the 20th Century to the present day". This exceptionally old expression was made from Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche, Baco and Colombard harvested, pressed and vinified separately.

    Armagnac, FRANCE
    $179. 99

    ABV: 40%

Tenareze is a transitional Armagnac zone consisting of undulating slopes with heavy clay soils mixed with a chalky sandstone that gives an acidic wine and generally yields full flavoured, long lived Armagnacs, sometimes powerfully scented. While several excellent independent producers exist in this region, it is more a home to most of Armagnacs negociants. Plantings are dominated by Ugni Blanc and Colombard vines. 40% Alc./Vol.

Gelas De Bortoli Black Noble Finish 16 Year Old Single Cask Armagnac (700ml)
    Armagnac, FRANCE
    $180. 00
    Bottle
    $2160.00 Dozen
    ABV: 47.5%
A 16 year old Bas Armagnac which has been matured in casks that previously held "Black Noble", a dessert wine produced by De Bortoli made from botrytis affected grapes. The juice is fortified and aged for several years in old oak resulting in a wine with aromas and flavours redolent of coffee, anise and toffee.

Tasting note: The pretty topaz colour is perfectly clear. Aromas of balsamic and oak shavings blow off to reveal restrained notes of apricot, dates, raw honey, liquorice bullets and spent oak barrel. Vibrant off-dry entry; flavours of prunes, cinnamon and clove; thins out at the finish which also accents warming spices and bitter cocoa. Finally almost rum-like as this rebounds with hints of dried banana, raw sugar and marzipan in the aftertaste. 47.5% Alc./Vol. 320 bottles.

    Armagnac, FRANCE
    $145. 00

    $1740.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50.2%
Another Gelas Bas Armagnac, this time finished in casks that previously held Australia's famous sweet white, De Bortoli 'Noble One'. Generally recognised as the pinnacle of Australian sweet winemaking, it tends to be richer and sweeter than examples from Sauternes.

Tasting note: Flawless amber gold. Borders on floral with aromas of toast and honey, candied apricot/orange and hints of potpourri. Mildly astringent delivery includes orange spice cake, peel-heavy marmalade, bitter chocolate, fine tannins and suggestions of dried prune / apricot late in the aftertaste. Impressive persistence. 50.2% Alc./Vol. 320 bottles.

With a focus on Bas Armagnac and La Ténarèze, the house of Gelas is today led by Philippe Gelas, representing the fourth generation of the family to take the reins. He has been running the firm since late 2001, carrying on in the innovative spirit of his forebears by introducing single varietal Armagnacs, emphasising alternative styles, as well as vintage dated bottlings, exclusively from the year of harvest stated on the label. The exceptionally old 1959 is one from the archives, with Australia receiving a miniscule allocation,

Distilled in 1959 and bottled in 2018, this remarkable wood-aged spirit promises a sublime brandy experience. At around 50-60 years of age, the wood has infused its full quota of tannins and aromas to the liquid. At this stage, explains Gelas, the Armagnac is typically decanted into glass demijohns where it will continue to age in storehouses built by Baptiste Gélas in 1875. The period in glass continues to develop the brandy, helping to harmonize the aromas and preserve the characteristic rancio notes. 40% Alc./Vol.

Notes from Adelphi... Drawn from a French oak barrique, displaying a moderate bead and mahogany in colour. The spice-laden nose is rich with sweet vermouth, damson jam, parma violets, black forest gâteau, panettone and aniseed. On the palate we discover herbaceous rosemary, cherry cola, blackberry coulis, Old Spice and Fernet Branca. A lingering finish rounds this off wonderfully. 55% Alc./Vol. 282 bottles.

Part of the Cadenhead's "Malternative" range, this indie vintage-dated Armagnac was released in September 2019. The bottlers say to expect aromas and flavours of "...hazelnut, all spice, malt loaf with melted butter, finishing with brioche, vanilla pods and white chocolate."

Other reviews… This one came from France too ;-). Oh and pst, it cannot be both Bas-Armagnac and Ténarèze. Now, it’s said that Ténarèze are the Armagnacs for the true aficionados, who also love corrida, foie gras and rugby. Colour: amber. Nose: once again, this is rustic Armagnac, but it’s got strength and the assertiveness (what?) that the 1979 did not quite have. Stewed peaches, honey, raisins, prunes, and blond caramel. A touch of orange blossom water. Mouth: oranges, apples, raisins, maple syrup, demerara sugar, peaches, all that in a structure made out of some kind of mentholy oak – which is just perfect. No, not mizunara. Finish: long, earthy, with wonderful notes of lemongrass and, indeed, limoncello. Unusual and lovely. Comments: forgot to say, this is natural cask strength. A lovely bottling by the Scots, a smart move that any Gascon rugby player will just applaud. This Ténarèze is very good, if still rustic and ‘farmy’. 47.8% Alc./Vol. 85 points -Serge Valentin, whiskyfun.com

Another 'Malternative' from a company better known for releasing obscure whiskies and rums. There's additional interest here given the Armagnac comes non chill filtered. The price/age ratio is also exceptional for a wood aged spirit.

Other reviews... At Cadenhead they’re calling these ranges the ‘Alternative Spirits’. I would have added an M. They would not tell you about the domaine/estate, but they did not forget to mention that this is ‘Armagnac from France’. It’s true that Armagnac from Outer-Mongolia remains grossly overestimated. Colour: amber. Nose: this is ultra-classic Armagnac, both rich and refreshing, with some fudge and coffee and then a mentholy development that would lead to some pine-y notes. Otherwise, candied oranges and apricots are well there, whilst an awesome earthiness is emerging. Remains a little rustic, but that’s what you’re expecting from some proper French ;-) Armagnac. Mouth: indeed, classic Armagnac, a little vinous, dry, rustic, and with echoes of Calvados that are not unusual in artisan brandy. Finish: rather long, a little gritty, and pretty mentholy. More pine liqueur. Comments: rather old-school farm Armagnac. I find it good, but we’re not quite up there with the best if you ask this humble French taster. Same score.

Notes from the Cadenheads... Nose: Soft Wood Smoke, praline, stewed fruits. Flavour: mouth coating, date and walnut bread, old leather. Finish: orange peel, winter spices, cloves. 43.3% Alc./Vol.

    Armagnac, FRANCE
    $165. 00

    $1980.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Originally selling for $200 / 700ml bottle in Australia. The value has increased significantly with this direct import one litre format.

This is Chabot's flagship, aged up to 35 years. The bouquet opens with bold aromas of buttered fruit bread, spiced plums, dried apricot, peppery oak and hints of honey. Medium to full bodied, offering nicely rounded flavours of fruit cake, vanilla and cocoa, finishing with light orange zest, leather, rancio and cinnamon, it strikes a good balance between sweet fruit and drier, spicy wood notes. The quality is high, and the beautiful ribbed decanter will make it a statement piece on your spirits shelf. In short, at this price / volume ratio, you can't go wrong. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Initial scent reminds me of walnuts and nougat; aeration and swirling encourage plumper, more candied/honeyed/minty aromas to emerge. Taste at entry is sensuous, sweet and like brown sugar; at midpalate there’s a seductive smokiness that takes on a pipe-tobacco quality. Concludes moderately sweet, yet razor sharp and nicely acidic. 90-95 points - wineenthusiast.com

The Chabot family established their name in the wines and spirits trade in 1828. Based in the village of Labastide d'Armagnac, the family produced the wine necessary to the distillation of Armagnac. In 1963, Chabot Armagnac was first exported in bottle from France when Michel Camus, President of Cognac Camus and John Gentzbourger, Director of Camus Overseas decided to step forward for the future of Chabot. A production unit was installed in Villeneuve de Marsan with its ageing cellars in Labastide d'Armagnac. Soon Chabot became the number one exported Armagnac in France and important markets were developed in the Asia Pacific region. Today, Chabot Armagnac is widely sold and distributed in ninety-six countries. It remains the world's number one exported Armagnac.

Reportedly produced from Armagnacs aged between 23 to 35 years.

An extraordinary opportunity: Half Price XO Armagnac as wholesaler quits stocks. The packaging seals the deal.

Tasting note: Impressive polished mahogany / glossy topaz colour. Yields attractive scents of dates, raisins and vanilla counterpointed by drier scents of roasted nuts, cocoa, cigar box and white pepper. A touch of rancio too. Entry is finely tannic, medium dry, unfolding with a crescendo of dates, moist fruit cake, dried fig and baking spice showing excellent sweet-dry balance. Trace acidity freshens the finish. The sweet dried fruits vie with the oak through the aftertaste. Excellent length. The packaging is a plus. 40% Alc./Vol.

Sedate entry expands into a bold, peppery attack; cinnamon and vanilla underscored by a thread of sweet dried fruits. Further air contact turns the aroma resiny, woody, cigar-box-like. A robust, oak-driven style with a spicy attack; Flavours of vanilla, ripe plum and dates adding a sweet thread through the finish. Produced by the Grassa Family at Chateau Tariquet, located east of Eauze, a commune in the Gers department in southwestern France. The property lies within the prestigious Bas-Armagnac appellation, home to Armagnac's best terroirs.

While up to ten different grape varieties can be used to produce Armagnac (most commonly Ugni Blanc, Baco and Colombard), this Armagnac employs only Folle Blanche, also one of the key grape varieties of Cognac. Some of the fruit has been sourced from the estate's seven acres of extremely rare, ancient pre-phylloxera vines.

It may seem unusual to compare a Whisky and Armagnac, yet Tariquet's intenisty, texture, balance and idiosyncrasies draws strong parallels to another 'house' favourite, Glenmorangie Astar.

    A thrilling, contemporary styled Armagnac.

Tasting Notes: Deep golden colour with pale golden hue. Bright, fresh, lively nose - a step away from more traditional 'earthy' Armagnac noses. Intense, lifted aromas of butterscotch, exotic savoury spice, fennel, toasted almonds and a hint of peach. The luscious palate initially delivers warm shortbread and butterscotch flavours over a layer of exotic spice and peach with hints of pepper emerging. Warm, spicy, nutty back palate. Exceptionally long aftertaste, with subtle peach and almond flavours fading and then re-appearing alternately. Perfect balance, loads of flavour delivering a gentle, warm prickle. Bottled at natural strength, without caramel colouring. 47.5% Alc./Vol.

    $375. 00
    Bottle
    $4500.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Bottled in 2021, so approaching the half century mark, this extraordinary value in wood-aged spirits continues Laubade's run of vintage-dated bottlings. The Chateau only release these Armagnacs after a minimum of 15 years of ageing. This goes well beyond that. More than eighty different vintages are currently being matured in Laubade’s cellars. The oldest vintage is from 1888. Each year tells a story dealing with the ongoing climate changes, cask quality and the cellar's temperature - all of which define the vintage identity. A culmination of rich know-how and dedication to quality from three generations, the Lesgourgues family continue to run their own 260 acre property. Planted to Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche & Baco, each variety is distilled seperately. Notably, Laubade remains alone in coopering their own Gascon oak casks. Sustainable agriculture is also the standard here (manure is produced by 600 ewes).

    $3588.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46.5%

Notes from the producers... Brilliant Amber color. A rustic but very elegant nose. Typical aromas of an Armagnac of this age: licorice, leather, cinnamon, cloves, toast. On the palate, the balance of alcohol, tannins and aromas is magnificent. The aromas of candied fruit, English candy, cinnamon and gingerbread never end.  Produced from 67% Ugni blanc and 33% Colombard and aged 35 years before bottling in 2021, undiluted at 46.5% Alc./Vol. with nothing added.

"Marc Darroze is a treasure hunter, roaming Armagnac to find extraordinary barrels from the best terroirs. It’s always been thus at Darroze, perhaps Armagnac’s most famed négociant. Marc’s grandfather, Jean, was a chef who sought out singular barrels from local farmers for his restaurant. In the 1960’s, Marc's father, Francis, turned this family talent for discovering great brandies into a business. Though, it produces blends, Darroze’s genius is in its single-origin, vintage bottles. The Unique Collection is always bottled at cask strength, with no reduction and labeled with the source where the liquid comes from. With more than 60 vintages from more 30 hand-picked small estates, Darroze does most of its distilling at the place of origin. “We prefer to move the alembic to the wine rather than the wine to the alembic,” says Marc". - Jason Wilson, Vinous 2018

Notes from the producers... Bottled after 21 years in oak. Golden color with darker tints. A very nice nose, pleasant with ripe and crystalized fruity flavors (prune, fig, quince), toffee and dried fruits (almonds, nuts). On the palate, tannins are round. We feel again some fruity flavors (prune, fig) and spicy (pepper, nutmeg, cloves). Long in the palate. Undiluted and with nothing added. 48.5% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... [August 2019 bottling tasted] The nose is fruity, juicy, racy and offers elegance as well as a small tension. It reveals notes of clementine, lemon and small notes of peach associated with fine touches of juicy apple, slight hints of dried zest, dried white flowers as well as very discreet hints of cloves, gray pepper, spices and an imperceptible hint of hazelnut. The mouth is fruity, well-balanced and offers a fine juicy / acidulous frame, a good definition, elegance, gourmandize, freshness, a good definition as well as a beautiful grain. On the palate this Armagnac expresses notes of juicy / ripe clementine, juicy / ripe lemon and small notes of vine peach associated with fine touches of juicy / ripe green apple, quenette, lemon flowers as well as discreet hints of caramelization, pepper, a subtle hint of Bourbon vanilla and an imperceptible hint of cigar." 93-94 points -  VertdeVin

Produced from 50 year old Ugni Blanc vines grown on the sandy soils of Domaine de La Poste located in Tenareze, this Armagnac was distilled in 1977 and bottled in January 2017. As most of the production here was carried out in the '70s, there are a numerous vintages from that decade being offered by Darroze under his "Unique Collection" label that are worth seeking out.

Tasting note: Polished copper / beams from the glass. Ideal clarity. A fabulous brandy bouquet opening with cigar box, prunes and hints of varnish. Expands with time in the glass adding suggestions of fig paste, nectarine, almond pastry, vanilla custard, black pepper and rancio. Entry is a little firm, oak-heavy, dry; countered by a burst of sweet fruits as the wood dovetails into fig, apricot, nectarine and vanilla. Climaxes in the aftertaste which sustains the flavours of the middle stage with extraordinary staying power. Resonates for 20 seconds plus. Even better after extended air contact. Outstanding. 49% Alc./Vol.

Domaine de Barigos is located in Bas Armagnac on tawny sands planted out to sixty year old Baco vines. The Delhostes continuously distilled, maturing their spirits in barrels made from local forest oak. For many years they were lovingly stored in the family's little roadside cellar where the work of time gradually turned them into the fine Armagnacs they are today. Darroze bought all of M. Delhostes stock in 2014 and are proud to be able to present these wonderful vintages. This edition was distilled in 1989 and bottled in 2018. 45.8% Alc./Vol.

Momentarily bittersweet, tannic and mildly acidic, this fills out at the mid palate stage with a surge of dates, fruit cake and vanilla framed by fine, drying tannins and lively spices. Finishes with cigar box, pepper and a touch of rancio; the fruit manages to stay above the oak till the end. A leaner style that really shines at the finish. Great stuff. 48% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: Deep polished brass. Relatively lean on the nose opening with split pine, pencil shavings and trace white pepper. Five minutes air contact draws out sweeter dried fruit notes; fresh dates? Fruit tart? Later caramel fudge and vanilla. A youthful, vibrant Armagnac with early cedary oak flooded by a rush of plush fruits. Vanilla, prunes and raisins compete with black pepper and spicy oak through the aftertaste. Brawny and lively with the fruit and wood in harmonious tension. 49.7% Alc./Vol. Non diluted.

Tasting note: [November 2016 bottling] Pure polished copper. Great viscosity. Superb aromas of dried fig, fruit cake, dates, cinnamon, cigar box, liquorice bullets, hazelnut and cocoa. Four decades in oak makes its presence felt but the wood is sufficiently balanced by a sweet thread of orchard fruits (fig, nectarine, apricot); enlivened with warming spices through the finish. An understated, drier-style. The bouquet is a delight. 41.9% Alc./Vol.

Previous bottling tasted October 2016: Distilled in 1976 and bottled in June 2016. Deep mahogany with gold ochre edges. Fabulous dessert styled aromatics are pure and intense including caramel fudge, sticky date pudding and mocha followed by unexpectedly vibrant, fruity notes of dried apricot / fig / mango; five minutes of air contact draws out fruit toast, cigar box and rancio adding further layers to the bouquet. Delicate and breezy entry has a fruit freshness that belies its age. Mid palate gains momentum with a slow motion tsunami of bitter chocolate, rancio, hazelnut, dried fig and vanilla carried by powdery tannins. After four decades the oak is closing in but never quite overwhelms. Rounds off with a late burst of muscat-like sugars, vying with ultra-fine tannins in an aftertaste that goes on and on. A stunning grandfather brandy that's a relative bargain on the world stage. Superb. 41.5% Alc./Vol. 96 points

Dartigalongue, in the Western part of Bas Armagnac, lays claim to being the oldest house in the appellation. The family began to distill in 1813. Their vineyards reside on soils that are more sandy than those in the East of Bas Armaganc. These sandy soils tend to produce grapes with higher acidity, which results in very round spirits with plenty of finesse. The house also employs mostly Gascogne oak (90%) which gives the eau de vie more spice than those aged in majority Limousin oak. It remains a family run operation with production around 60,000 bottles per year.

Vintage Armagnacs are exclusively the product of the year mentioned on the label. Only exceptional years are selected. Extended age vintage bottlings (some are over 100 years old) can leave the impression of having spent too much time on oak. The key to success is balance - combining those rare and highly desirable characteristics that only come with great age while retaining some of the vibrancy and fruit sweetness of youth.

Tasting note [from a 20ml sample]. Slightly pale, deep copper colour. Opening scents are subtle, woody, beeswax-like. Second pass ups the intensity and adds hints of cardamom. Five minutes releases dilute maple syrup, old cigar box and sap like characteristics. Big, broad delivery. Mid palate features roasted nuts, dilute maple syrup and buttered raisin cake followed by a wave of oak. Vanilla and mocha aftertaste, closes tannic and firm. The price is remarkable for such an old example. 40% Alc./Vol.

What other wood aged spirit offers a premium age statement for such a reasonable price? Distilled in 1979 after 35 years in oak and selling for just over $100! No wonder the French keep Armagnac to themselves.

Other reviews... Dark mahogany bronze colour. Initial surprising freshness on the nose with exotic fruits, passionfruit and plum, figs and honey. With a complexing nod to its age, reminiscent of libraries. The oaky structure is still very evident but is not intrusive, and just supports the extremely complex flavours and nuances. Fantastic finish. 40% Alc./Vol.
