Audemus Pink Pepper Gin (500ml)Cognac, FRANCE$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenABV: 44%The Audemus Distillery is atypical for Cognac. Instead of giant copper pot stills, they operate a small vacuum still out of a living room. Their method is simple and well documented: "By lowering the pressure inside the still, we lower the temperature at which the alcohol will boil – meaning we avoid cooking the botanicals we distill; ensuring the freshness of flavour is maintained." explains co-owner, Miko Abouf. "Distilling is always distilling – evaporating and condensing; nothing more – however, it is a process that is infinitely complex in its simplicity and allows for a myriad of detail." Pink Pepper's botanical regime is an interesting mix of juniper, black cardamom, pink peppercorns, cinnamon, honey, vanilla and tonka beans (two others are left secret), however, noticably absent is the second most used botanical in gin - coriander. Vanilla and tonka beans are infused post distillation, bringing added viscosity. Abouaf and co-creator, Ian Spink also say their gin is designed to age, with time in the bottle accenting the sweeter botanical notes. "Every botanical we distill is done so individually, with its own specific method." says Abouf. " The maceration time, botanical ratio, alcohol ABV, distillation time, pressure and temperature will all depend on the botanical’s character. If we’re looking for delicate flavours – everything will be done with a gentle touch. If we’re looking for spicier and stronger notes, we will increase the intensity at which we will extract flavour. Juniper is a brilliant example to illustrate this; for Pink Pepper Gin, we distill our juniper at 55 degrees extracting medium spice and intensity. At higher temperatures we’d extract more resiny (terpenic) flavours, at lower temperatures we’d extract greener and more citrusy notes." Abouf adds “My aim is to create atypical and awesome spirits. This is all part of the same mentality of boosting the dynamism of the spirits industry, as well as working with the ‘Made in France’ label to make something which is contemporary, (but) built on traditions of the past.” Tasting note: [20ml sample] Clear. Fascinating aromas of crushed tea tree leaves, light rosemary, trace tarragon and white pepper. Creamy-yet-concentrated with a burst of bush honey, cinnamon and vanilla bean. Finishes vibrant, dry, pleasingly spicy with flavours of cinnamon doughnut and roasted herbs. Very engaging, distinctive, new world style. 44% Alc./Vol. Other reviews... Bathtub Gin Explorer's Edition (1000ml)London, UNITED KINGDOMReduced from $119.99$74. 99Bottle$899.88 DozenABV: 50.2%Readers will remember a near half price reduction on Bathtub Gin from earlier this year. Now the importers up the ante with an even better deal: A special batch in a one litre bottle with a potent ABV – perfect if you're off on an expedition! Our understanding is that this was created for the Travel Retail market - hence the sub-title "Explorer's Edition". Essentially it's a high strength, large format of the standard 43.3% bottling that won World's Best Compound Gin at the World Gin Awards in 2020 and retails for around AU$90. What we have here then is an absolute steal.
The name "Bathtub Gin" originally referred to any style of homemade spirit made in amateur conditions. It was first used in 1920 during the prohibition-era in the United States, with reference to the poor quality alcohol that was being made in home bath tubs and mixed into cocktails to disguise its coarse flavour. Obviously, this contemporary version is not that sort of gin. Launched in 2011, it was the very first product from Atom Brands, the innovative team responsible for That Boutique-y Whisky Company and Drinks by the Dram, amongst others.
The gin is created using the traditional method of ''cold compounding''. High quality copper pot-still spirit is twice infused with juniper, orange peel, coriander, cinnamon, cloves and cardamom. This double-infusion process allows fresh botanical flavours that might be too delicate to survive the distillation process to shine through the finished drink. Production is restricted to ultra-small batches of just 30-60 bottles at a time and the length of the compounding period is controlled entirely by periodic sampling. Our tasting found a pale gold-coloured spirit with a complex bouquet of crushed pine buds, lemon cough drops, sweet oregano plus hints of pepper, cinnamon and cardamom. The generous ABV adds depth without adding heat or prickle. In fact, you barely notice the alcohol in the creamy, medium-bodied delivery that slowly crescendos into woodsy-juniper-like flavours. Glowing white pepper, citrus zest, pine and Fisherman's Friend build through the finish. When it comes to mixing, this is strong stuff, so go easy. Its creators also recommend keeping things simple - premium tonic or lots of ice and a slice of orange to garnish. Bar-gazers will appreciate the eye catching bespoke presentation which sees the bottle wrapped in brown paper and completed with string and wax to resemble a Victorian apothecary. 130 units only. 50.2% Alc./Vol.

Medium-bodied, the palate follows with attractive spicy, woody-juniper flavours and a glowing white pepper, citrus zest, pine and Fisherman's Friend finish. Vivacious and drier-styled, this is very easy to like - as is the distinctive presentation; the bottle is wrapped in brown paper and completed with string and wax to resemble a Victorian apothecary. As for mixing, the creators recommend keeping it simple - premium tonic, or lots of ice and a slice of orange to garnish. 43.3% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... The nose is heavy with juniper, cinnamon and cardamom; orange oil adds a touch if citrusy depth. Overall, the nose is quite heavy. The palate builds quietly, with cinnamon, orange and juniper culminating all at once. As they fade, fresh cracked juniper berry gives way to notes of forest and clove. The finish is quite long with cinnamon and orange again dominating. Very smooth spirit overall, but heavy on the spices and herbs. In cold compounded gins, you definitely get a side of common ingredients like cinnamon that you don’t always pick up when they are distilled. For example... you almost get a more literal fresh-ground-cinnamon note in here. Bathtub/cold-compounded/infused gins are fantastic for beginners at picking out tasting notes, learning how to decouple flavor accords. While distilling can be transformative and surprising (coriander for example), bathtub gins are much more literal to the ingredients in the way you’re used to tasting them. The essence of these varietals is extracted by the BCN distillery, located in the quiet mountains of Priorat. Using a copper four-plate Arnold Holstein distillation column, only wine lees of the top DOQ Priorat and DO Montsant wines are used. An all-local botanical list includes juniper berries, rosemary, fennel, pine shoots and especially figs combined with lemon peels from South-Catalonia to produce what's been described as a "mountain-range Mediterranean gin". 40% Alc./Vol. -

Beefeater Crown Jewel Premium Gin (1000ml)London, UNITED KINGDOM$199. 00Bottle$2388.00 DozenABV: 50%Note: This has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product pictured.
Gin has been produced in England since the early seventeenth century. During the nineteenth century, a chemist named James Burrough combined the wild flavour of juniper with the subtle sweetness of angelica and the spice of coriander to produce a fresher, more aromatic style. Burrough was supposedly the first to coin the term 'London Dry' to differentiate his gin from its Dutch counterparts.Inspired by the iconic jewels housed in the Tower of London, this modern re-imagining of the standard Beefeater was launched in 1993, discontinued in 2009 then re-released in 2015 with the same recipe: That's the same nine botanicals used for the original Beefeater label - juniper, lemon peel, coriander seed, almond, Seville orange peel, orris root, licorice root, angelica root, and angelica seed — with the addition of grapefruit and a heightened ABV. The 2022 Crown Jewel release sees the screen-printed graphics adapted to yet another bold bottle design. Since relaunching the brand has been awarded several medals at the 2022 international spirit competitions, including a Double-Gold at the International Spirits Challenge, Gold at the World Gin Awards and Gold at the International Wine & Spirits Competition. We like to keep this one simple. Think Martinis, minimal vermouth and a lemon peel garnish. 50% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... A brilliantly balanced gin with juniper, citrus and white pepper spice presented in harmony, but it is the floral parma violet notes from the generous use of orris root that set this gin apart. 5 stars - diffordsguide.com

Beefeater Burrough's Reserve Oak Rested Gin (700ml)London, UNITED KINGDOM$135. 00Bottle$1620.00 DozenABV: 43%Launched in 2013, this marks an unusual departure for such a large Gin producer, although given the present trend towards diversification, it doesn't really come as a surprise. What is truly novel here is the use of x-wine barrels. This expression is rested in French oak barrels that previously held "Lillet Aperitif", and by all reports, it definitely comes through in the flavour. Current master distiller Desmond Payne, has recreated the gin from Burrough’s original recipe. “After 45 years in the drinks industry, I wanted to create something truly unique that celebrated the distilling heritage of Beefeater,” said Payne. “I had been interested in resting gin for a while and knew that if the cask was right, we could make a really exciting new gin that changed people’s perceptions of the spirit. I felt that the use of Jean de Lillet casks and Still Number 12 would introduce a new character to the gin, elevating it to a place that had not been explored before. I expect Burrough’s Reserve to appeal to free thinking individuals who enjoy challenging convention and exploring new sensory experiences with gin.” No tasting notes available. - Beefeater 24 Gin (700ml)London, UNITED KINGDOM$59. 99Bottle$719.88 DozenABV: 45%Closure: Screw Cap

Belgin St Cruyt Abbey Dry Gin (500ml)BELGIUM$74. 99Bottle$899.88 DozenABV: 43%Belgium is famous for its abbeys and monasteries with just over 40 still surviving. From medieval times, these islands of civilisation maintained herb gardens to provide medicine and food for the monks and for the local community. In a quest to create 'The Holy Grail' of gins, Belgin have dusted off ancient elixirs and discovered long forgotten herbs and spices recorded by Master Monks. As such, the gin is named after the old Flemish word for "herb" and is the world’s first Abbey inspired dry gin. The full breadth of 50 botanicals is a secret, but the following are known:
Various forest berries provide an inviting nose as does lavender flower. Traditional citrus such as lime is used, as are coriander and cardamom with verbena leaves and marjoram, while juniper berries are combined with abbey herbs such as rosemary, sage, thyme and angelica root. Traditionally distilled in a copper pot still and bottled at 43% Alc./Vol. Tasting note: Nosing finds a complex amalgam of rose water, potpourri, raspberry flan, ripe juniper, green cardamom and delicate heat. Light and ethereal in the mouth, with floral accents evoking dried herbs, curry leaf, lavender & rose-scented talcum powder, rounded out by late beeswax, juniper and red berry freshness. Lingers. Reminiscent of an enfleurage style. Very distinctive. 43% Alc./Vol. Gold Medal: Super Premium Gin - The Spirits Business Gold 2016 -

Berry Bros & Rudd No.3 Gin (700ml)NETHERLANDS$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 46%What at first glance may appear to be a thoroughly English product is actually produced in Holland. No bad thing given the Dutch invented gin. In fact, it comes out of one of the country's oldest distilleries using a proprietary recipe rooted in British tradition. Berry Bros. & Rudd (est.1698) based at No.3 St. James Street in London take credit for the formula, as referenced in the superb presentation. Inspiration for the key symbol on the label came when packaging designers found a key to 'The Parlour', probably the oldest room in BBR's shop. Produced from a grain based spirit via a 100-year-old, brick-encased, copper pot still, the limited range of botanicals pushes tradition to the extreme with a simple three fruit and three spice recipe: juniper, from Italy, sweet Spanish orange peel and grapefruit peel. Completing the mix are angelica root, adding an earthy, drying quality; Moroccan coriander seed, which releases a lemony flavour during distilling as well as adding a spicy, slightly peppery finish, and cardamom pods, which also add a spicy, aromatic, warm bite.
From a fresh bottle, the first thing that grabs you about No.3 are its vivid aromas of fresh cut grapefruit, unripe raspberries, lavender, black pepper and pine sap. The palate is full-bodied and assertive, led by a peppery attack including juicy grapefruit flavours, hints of coriander and a warm spiciness that carries through to the finish, winding down with grapefruit, ripe lemon and freshly sawn pine. All up, it's a zesty, masculine-styled London Dry defined by grapefruit and spice, and the intensity of flavour at 46% means a little less goes further. Keep a bottle in the freezer and you have Summer's ideal suitor to dry Martinis or classic G&Ts.
Other reviews... Fresh and aromatic, this traditional London dry style gin offers juniper, coriander, grapefruit peel and anise notes. It's versatile and well suited for making gin and tonics. 92 points - wineenthusiast.com
Country Winner Gold - London Dry - 2020 World Gin Awards
Double Gold - 2020 San Francisco World Spirits Competition...A juniper-forward spirit with a bitter river running through it — likely driven heavily by the grapefruit peel — with a finish that offers both oily citrus notes and light floral elements. Some earthiness creeps in toward the back, along with a slightly sweet, fruity kick. This is gin without a lot of fluff, stripped down to its basics, which makes for a clean and refreshing spirit. - drinkhacker.com

Black Tomato Gin (500ml)NETHERLANDS$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 42.3%Probably not ideal for G&Ts but fascinating nonetheless. Black Tomato gin is produced at Kampen Distillery, Holland in a small fishermen’s village with a long tradition of mussel fishing. A few drops of water from the coastal location makes it into every bottle, otherwise it's black tomatoes to the fore, alongside juniper berries and one 'secret botanical'. The tomatoes are plucked from the bushes and smashed with neutral spirit. The liquid is then filtered and distilled. Juniper and the secret botanical are also processed as separate distillates, and the three spirits are combined before the purified salt water is added. The whole is finally stretched out using grain alcohol. Produced in batches of around 3000 bottles, it comes charmingly presented in a stumpy matt black bottle. Some consider it an ideal accompaniment to seafood. Tasting note: Clear. Opening pass evokes tinned Romas, fresh tomato juice, Bloody Marys... 2-3 minutes of swirling doesn't budge the bouquet beyond the keynote - except perhaps a vaguely coastal edge? More like a well-made flavoured vodka than anything remotely gin-like - semi sweet tomato relish and a spicy finish. Once again, great for Bloody Marys. No need to add anything here, except juniper if you want something that resembles gin. 42.3% Alc./Vol. -

Blackwater Wexford Strawberry Gin (500ml)IRELAND$94. 99Bottle$1139.88 DozenABV: 40%Produced only through the summer with all the strawberries used grown locally in Wexford by the Kearns family. No additional sweeteners are added. Recommended in a G&T with a slice of strawberry and a crack of black pepper. Tasting note: The largest botanical component in this gin are the berries which also contribute a subtle pink blush. Medium dry aromas hint at strawberry milk or berry tart, the juniper just peeking through. Some orris root perhaps, then sweeter floral notes. Chamomile? Light to medium bodied and nicely textured with delicately expressed botanicals and a flourish of spice through the finish. Trace strawberry repeats in the aftertaste. A Summer style gin that strikes a good balance between fruit and traditional notes. 40% Alc./Vol. -

Blackwater Juniper Cask Irish Gin (500ml)IRELANDReduced from $115.00$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 46%A novel Irish gin that's barrel aged in 50 litre juniper wood casks. It uses the same 12 botanicals found in Blackwater No.5, but in a slightly different proportion; orange and the sweeter roots are increased, because, like its berries, juniper timber can be a wee bit astringent. Tasting note: Pale gold. First pass finds an attractive mingling of juniper and wood notes, in particular fresh sawn green pine, balsa wood…later, crushed pine needles, dried lemon peel, thyme, black pepper. Light to medium bodied flavours find juniper framed by citrus peel, drying herbal teas, warming black pepper and fine tannins. Concludes nicely balanced, gently warming and medium long. Distinctive. 46% Alc./Vol.
We're serious about gin.
Distilleries both small and large from every continent on earth can now lay claim to a Gin. You could be cynical and suggest it's merely to maintain cash flow while more 'serious' barrel aged spirits mature. Gin is easy and cheap. After all, it's just flavoured vodka at the end of the day, right? That line of thinking misrepresents all this spirit can be in the hands of visionaries and fanatics. The freshest botanicals in high quality alcohol result in an exotic amalgam of accents and supporting notes that no white spirit can match. Perfumed complexity and bracing intensity are not the characteristics of every gin we taste - hence, it can't be that easy to achieve. From Navy Strength to organic to sloe gin, browse our range today. A long departure from the once "fuddy-duddy" association of the genre, Vickers, Gordon's and other ubiquitous brands are threatened to be swallowed in a giant yawn by the progressive, quality-savvy new-gin devotee. Trending classifications such as 'New Western' style (juniper evident but not dominant) are gaining prominence as are the use of indigenous botanicals and varied spirit bases, including non-grain. Barrel ageing is also gaining momentum. The vast improvement in quality has resulted in texture rich, neat/sipping friendly spirits. Yet, the traditional English and Dutch styles remain more relevant than ever in honouring the cocktail classics. Learn more today...
