There's no doubt that alcohol strength plays an important role in flavour delivery. The most exciting taste experiences from spirits usually come from bottlings over 46% ABV. Unfortunately, tax laws in Australia mean that many mainstream spirits are marketed on price first, flavour second. The temptation for producers to bottle at lower strengths is understandable. They know that their brand will fall into a different tax bracket, so they'll pay less, and ultimately appear more competitively priced in a crowded market. The compromise is on flavour. So if you think you've tried Tanqueray, think again. This is a limited shipment at "Export Strength" revealing this Gin's full splendour.

Another 19th century Tanqueray recipe has surfaced, this time from 1832. The new expression has a “savoury twist”, thanks to the addition of the English garden herb, lovage.
Juniper, angelica, liquorice and coriander are also in the mix.

World-renowned bartender, Jason Crawley, helped create the new gin which he describes as “deeply herbaceous, celery-like and earthy, whilst retaining that signature juniper-citrus forward style”.

Launched in the UK in early 2018, the new expression is reportedly the first gin to be created with lovage.
“We had to work a lot harder on the distilling process, because at first it came through a bit soupy,” explained Crawley. “We had to practice, adding a little bit more this and a little bit more that. We looked at it a bit like a graphic equaliser – we had all the key parts of Tanqueray, but we turned up the bass a little, turned up the treble and dropped down the middle section. It was all a case of tweaking it.”

Around 100,000 bottles have been released in Europe, Taiwan and Hong Kong. We've sneaked in a small amount for the Australian market!

Tasting note: Classically London dry with strong piney/juniper aromas as well as coriander, orris root, pepper and delicate herbal / coastal notes (kelp?) A lively, full flavoured and keenly balanced gin with a fresh juniper and coriander-led delivery; oily textured through the middle stages with budding pepper warmth and subtle celery leaf (?) giving an interesting vegetal twist to the finish. A vibrant, expertly integrated variation on traditional London dry. 47.3% Alc./Vol.

    UNITED KINGDOM

    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42%
Sourced from an independent, family owned company established in 2012 on the coast of north Cornwall who handcraft Gin and Pastis in tiny runs (the old-fashioned way). A small batch approach sees about 300 bottles created in each run, sometimes much less - each ensuring maximum care and attention. Each bottle is hand filled, wax sealed, labelled and signed by the distiller.

At the heart of the process lies a special, flame-fired, copper pot still (named 'Tamara'). Botanicals include juniper from Kosovo, coriander seeds from Bulgaria, fragrant handpicked Devon violets and fresh orange zest. Also employed are angelica root, orris root, green cardamom seeds, bitter almond, cinnamon and liquorice root.

The distillers compare the aromatic sensation to "... stumbling upon a beautiful orange blossom in the middle of a crisp, dry pine forest."

Taylor & Smith Dry Gin (500ml)
    Tasmania, AUSTRALIA
    $87. 99
    Bottle
    $1055.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Taylor & Smith is made up of Natalie Smith and Ben Taylor, based in Moonah, a suburb of greater Hobart. The base spirit (in part) is from Tassie apples from the Huon Valley that the duo ferment and distill themselves. A nod to a London Dry, their Dry Gin (as opposed to their standard gin) features the four key botanicals of sage, abalone shell, Huon Pine needles and red grapefruit.

Fresh sage is grown in the distillery garden and shells are sourced whilst on family abalone dives. Once cleaned, the shell is dried and broken into tiny pieces to infuse in the gin. Abalone shell, used in Chinese medicine, is a calcium carbonate that neutralises acids and adds a slight salinity to the spirit. Huon Pine (Lagarostrobos franklinii) is a species of conifer native to Tasmania. It's found by the edge of rivers and is an incredibly slow-growing, revered local timber. The needles provide piney notes that differ to juniper and add to the complexity. Try this in a dry martini, with dry tonic and a sprig of rosemary. Also makes for a fabulous Oyster Martini. 46% Alc./Vol.

The Negroni pack includes the following products to create the perfect Australian Negroni:

    • 1 x Patient Wolf Dry Gin (700ml)
    • 1 x Maidenii Sweet Vermouth (750ml)
    • 1 x Applewood Okar Amaro (500ml)
    • 1 x Mister Bitters Negroni Bitters (100ml)

    Making the Perfect Australian Negroni...

It all started with the Americano and an Italian Count who liked it boozy. Created by Gaspare Campari around 1860, the Americano is 1 part Vermouth and 1 part Campari topped with soda. It was originally named the "Milano-Torino" - the Campari from Milan and the vermouth from Turin (an important footnote when considering the “classic” Negroni). Legend has it that around 1920 Count Camillo Negroni, wanting a bigger buzz from his spritz, asked a bartender to replace the soda in his Americano with gin. So the Negroni was born - bitter, sweet and so deliciously complex. For some devotees, the greatest drink in the history of drinks.

Many adaptations now exist on the classic combination of equal parts gin, Vermouth and Amaro. Bartender, Luigi Bosco reflects, “Theoretically, the Negroni is the easiest drink to make. In reality though, because of the huge range of products consumers have at their disposal nowadays, it's a bit more complicated. I found myself tweaking the ratios multiple times to find the right balance, mostly because some vermouths aren't rich enough to get along with an equal amount of Amaro. Also, the lower alcohol contents in many modern Gins meant I often had to increase the amount of Gin.”

With this search for balance in mind and a range of superb Australian products at our disposal, this is where the fun starts! For a more strident and bitter, boozy aperitif try 20ml Maidenii, 30ml Applewood and 40ml Patient Wolf Gin with two hard dashes of Negroni bitters for that classic orange edge.

    • 40ml Patient Wolf Premium Dry Gin
    • 30ml Applewood Okar Amaro
    • 20ml Maidenii Sweet Red Vermouth
    • Two hard dashes of Mister Bitters Negroni bitters for that classic orange edge.
    • Garnish: Orange slice.

Method: Stir briefly in a mixing glass filled with ice then strain into an ice-filled rocks glass or tumbler. Twist an orange zest over the surface of the drink to release fresh aromatic oils. Garnish with the orange wedge if desired. A classic 1:1:1 ratio results in a soft, cinnamon scented entry into the Negroni (almost a cinnamon “Negronut”).

Numerically-named spirits are trending in the Gin category. London No.1 is owned by the Spanish company, Gonzalez Byass (better known for Tio Pepe Sherry), but the gin itself is produced at London's Thames Distillery. The brand is noted for having an unusual pale blue hue - probably a nod to one of the more curious ingredients - Gardenia flowers. Because the colour is added post distillation, EU spirits regulations preclude the use of 'London Dry" on the label. Marketing gimmicks aside, No.1 is essentially London Dry-inspired. Juniper, coriander, angelica and citrus peel are supported by liquorice, almond, savory, cassia, cinnamon and bergamot. From a 30ml sample the bouquet offers perfumed aromatics include white pepper and herbal / bark-like scents over a juniper base note. Concentrated, pleasantly peppery attack follows through to a creamy, herbaceous and juniper focused middle. The finish is leaner, but just as vibrant. The aftertaste turns spicy, drying with late suggestions of chamomile and peppermint tea. Nice length, and the intensity at 47% is a bonus, especially when it comes to mixing.

Other reviews... London No. 1 is surprisingly well-constructed. On the nose you’ll find a solid juniper base, plus hints of caramel sauce, orange and even grapefruit notes. The licorice character is mild but distinct — while this ingredient is becoming commonplace in modern gins, this is one of the few products I can recall where I could actually taste the licorice element. The body of London No. 1 Gin starts off restrained, zero alcoholic burn, and almost tasting watery despite a hefty 47% abv. But things open up a bit with some air, revealing more of the gin’s nuances. Some earthy notes emerge at the start, with juniper and citrus peel close behind. The midpalate veers toward a bittersweet character, its citrus taking on balsamic notes, with some of that lily-driven floral character finally emerging as the finish rumbles along. There’s sweetness on the back end too, a bit earthy, almost caramel mixed with honey in character, perhaps thanks to the bergamot. It’s a nice way to end things — not too dessert like, and providing a nice balance to the racier front side. I’m not sold on the blue color, but the gin itself is versatile, well-made, and unique in its own way. - drinkhacker.com

...Pretty silvery powder blue color. Delicate aromas of powdered nut pastry, anise, date custard, and pinecone with a supple, dryish medium-full body and a gently warming sweet baking spices, pepper, lemon, and juniper gelato accented finish. ABV: 40%
Margaret River in Western Australia is home to a host of established producers creating exceptional wines, but more importantly for Gin production, a pristine source of water and abundant natural botanicals. Hand selected, delicate flavourings such as cinnamon myrtle, Australian bush tomato and wattleseed bring a profile that is uniquely Australian to these Gins. Water is triple filtered for purity.

The Sabre is a uniquely Australian take on a traditional London Dry style. The bright, aromatic flavours are led by an undercurrent of citrus with a dominance of juniper, followed by the classic coriander seed. The addition of wattle seed adds a depth to the mid palate and introduces a creamy texture to the gin. Perfect as a classic G&T with lemon to release the intricacies of this uniquely styled gin.

Tasting note: Clear, silvery, slightly glycerous appearance. Powerful aromatics show excellent purity; unashamedly juniper focused issuing a classic piney / woody / peppery scent with an underlying incense-like sweetness emerging with time. Exceptionally soft, smooth texture and super clean; again, juniper heavy flavours dominate and are supported by a gentle peppery warmth. Dry, slightly waxy finish. Subtle anise, juniper and pepper fade. A faultless example of the London Dry genre with loads of charm. 40% Alc./Vol.

    ABV: 50%
The Tailor Made Spirits Company was recently formed by a small group of wine and spirit enthusiasts with a vision to create an affordable range of premium spirits that would sit comfortably on the world stage. The first releases included two exceptional gins under “The West Winds” label, named after the ocean breezes that carried sailors across the Indian ocean to the west coast of Australia.

The Cutlass combines traditional juniper alongside some uniquely Australian elements like cinnamon myrtle and Australian bush tomato. Handcrafted small batch is the key to its delicacy. The introduction of Australian bush tomato pairs up with an increase in coriander seed to produce a headstrong but beautifully aromatic gin. Garnish with a sliver of green capsicum or cherry tomato.

Tasting note: Clear, silvery appearance with a slight viscosity. Beneath a delicate floral / mineral top note, the juniper becomes evident, but overall, this is definitely more citrus orientated than the “The Sabre”, and in the freshest way imaginable in a gin. It literally smells like fresh peeled grapefruit, orange or lemon - superb. The freshness carries onto the palate where citrus peel is perfectly balanced against peppery juniper and rosemary flavours, building into a tremendous but controlled pepper burst. Bracing, impeccably clean and dry; Aftertaste is delicate with juniper, citrus peel, rosemary and lavender notes gradually subsiding leaving you wanting for more. A world class effort. 50% Alc./Vol.

Voted World's Best Classic Gin at the World Gin Awards 2021.

Inspired by the wild purple heather clad mountains on the Isle of Mull, this award-winning gin has been distilled with heather, rowan berries and rosehips. Like the other gins from Tobermory, a small proportion of new make whisky is added to the grain spirit. The aromas evoke subtle notes of juniper, chamomile tea, lemon zest, elderflower and pepper. The palate is a notch or two more robust than its sibling, and no doubt deliberately made to contrast; This shows similar purity but more vibrancy and spice: Zesty lime and hints of rose hip tea develop over a creamy, lightly peppered backdrop, freshening up at the finish with crushed pine buds and more citrus peel. The aftertaste leaves you with drying herbal teas. A satisfying all-rounder in the tradition of London Drys. 43.3% Alc./Vol.

At the asking price, this is miles ahead of mass-produced competitors like Vickers or Gordons. Stock up!

Made at the Tobermory Distillery on the Isle of Mull, better known for their single malt whiskies. A sixty litre, 1950s era still named 'Wee Betty' is employed for gin, though interestingly, a splash of new make malt spirit from the whisky stills is added for extra body. 'The Hebridean' is actually one of three gins currently produced by Tobermory and is clearly designed as a crowd pleaser. Kicking off with understated aromatics of piney juniper, white pepper, menthol and hints of elderflower, the palate is medium bodied, sleek and pure on entry leading into a well integrated, creamy, juniper, citrus peel and pepper-laced delivery, rounded off with a pleasing cool mint tang. Arguably not quite complex or powerful enough to justify a place in Martinis, but you could happily sip away at leisure or make dangerously drinkable G&Ts. Key botanicals include heather and Hebridean tea, as well as juniper, elderflower and sweet orange peel. Voted Best Scottish Classic Gin at the World Gin Awards 2020. 43.3% Alc.Vol.

Other reviews... Bought this on a visit to Tobermory on a recent holiday and what a treat it is to drink. It has a lovely citrus taste and is perfect if, like me, you like your gin neat and unadulterated. - Tobermory Distillery visitor review.

Half Moon Orchard Gin is a new release from Tuthilltown Spirits, New York's first whiskey distillery since Prohibition and creators of the highly revered 'Hudson' range of whiskey's.

The Gin is named after the vessel in which Henry Hudson first explored the River now bearing his name. In that same spirit of exploration, the Tuthilltown team have created a base of near neutral spirit from both Wheat and the Hudson Valley’s ubiquitous Apples (it's an 80 / 20 ratio). “We’re in the heart of the American apple industry so it’s natural for us to turn to apples to create an original New York gin”.Botanicals include: Juniper, cardamom, coriander, almond, elderberry, bitter orange peel, bergamont, lemon peel. Gold Medal Winner: 2015 Los Angeles International Spirits Competition.

A deliciously different gin to reinvigorate G & T’s and much more besides.

Tasting note: Clear slightly viscous appearance has a slivery blush. An initial juniper focus is added to by subtle grape / stewed apple / cider-like scents. Further inspection finds a lemon meringue sweet spot in the mix as the juniper retreats. The palate opens pleasantly spicy and vibrant, continuing into a concentrated, medium dry profile with citrus fruit competing with the juniper and pepper. Finishes crisp, dry and with a cleansing acidity bordering on being mildly tart. Shows excellent persistence. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other Reviews...Clear. Intriguingly dense aromas of dried fruits, juniper candy, and exotic Asian herbs and spices with a supple, dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body and a vibrant violet gelato, coriander cookie, and citrus buttercream accented finish. A massive Gin clearance as distillery shuts up shop. Over 50% off. Elsewhere pay up to $115.

When Australia hit peak gin several years ago, overwhelming competition meant more than a few brands failed to achieve sales momentum - even those whose gins stood out. It impacted producers at both ends of the passion scale. At the high end was Two Accents, kickstarted by an Aussie and a Brit: the ever-enthusiastic Adam Jacobs together with Laurie Bilby, who was making English sloe gin with her grandma at the age of seven. Batch-distilling in a traditional copper pot in McLaren Vale they debuted with the obligatory London Dry, then introduced a limited edition Navy Strength for high-octane cocktails. Shiraz from one hundred-year-old vines was added to the mix and the results were two novel takes on traditional Sloe - a Shiraz Gin and a Barrel-Aged Shiraz Gin. They all landed at premium prices, backed up by quality inside the bottle. The business has now closed and remaining stocks are being sacrificed to recover whatever's possible from the initial investment. If you run a bar or are thinking ahead to Spring / Summer celebrations, buying at least a six-pack of each for volume mixing will pay off in the months to come. What you get here are not second-rate spirits selling closer to the price they should have been to begin with - these gins are small batch runs that have been honed over time. They're true to style, pure and smooth enough to drink neat over ice.

'Siren' is Two Accents boozy alternative to mid-strength London Dry. It may not be as expressive on the nose as some other Navy Strengths we've tasted, but it still packs in a dense, juniper-heavy bouquet that includes pine forest floor, citrus zest and liquorice root as well as hints of grapefruit and dried herbs. The palate attack is significantly more intense while remaining keenly balanced with citrus, juniper and anise accents. The mid palate turns creamy, viscous and deeply warming; think Fisherman's Friend lozenges capped off by deliciously fresh and citrusy gin flavours, with a creamy Pastis-like note woven through the finish. Add a dash of water and the texture fluffs up while the profile speaks mostly of mandarin peel and citrus oils; the dry, earthy juniper elements are still present, only pushed further into the background. Even without water, it's easy to forget this is no regular-strength gin, so keep it in mind when adjusting proportions for G&Ts. 57.2% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Our Siren Gin is made to seduce, with a gorgeous siren song of perfectly blended flavours. Bottled at “Navy Strength” it has been created to be superbly balanced and dangerously smooth. On the nose there are Mandarin tones, liquorice and nuttiness. The flavour profile offers citrus lengthened by a warm back note provided by star anise, cassia, liquorice root and toasted coriander seeds, while the finish is incredibly smooth.

Sloe Gins have followed the resurgence of their London Dry relatives with new releases appearing from around the globe; including Australia. If you're new to this quintessentially British recipe, you'll soon realise the two are related by suffix alone, with the majority of brands available producing a sometimes overly sweet, liqueur-like style. There are a few exceptions, and Two Accents is one, inspired by the Barossa’s big, bold rockstar reds - in this case, Cimicky Wines’ ultra-premium Shiraz. The nose captures the grape's brambly red fruit character, countered by drier, woody juniper notes and hints of apple (orchard fruits are also in the mix). Light and breezy, the palate is reminiscent of Rosso Vermouth, only with more punch, as background citrus adds zest to notes of dried cranberry and plum before a subtle ruby port character enters. Add water and the palate actually feels more expansive. All up, it's a fresh, pure, easy-going Summer style that tastes more like gin than a liqueur - which is how Sloe should be. Enjoy over ice or try it in a Sloe Gin Fizz. 41% Alc./Vol.

"Ukiyo" translates as "floating world". The term refers to a state of mind that emphasizes living in the moment, detached from the difficulties of life. It's a concept reflected in a new spirit drawing on over a century of distilling wisdom: 'Ukiyo gin'. Its production employs traditional Japanese shochu spirit, redistilled with juniper, yuzu, regional citrus and other botanicals, a nod to the 1500 year old tradition of cultivating and harvesting yuzu in Japan. Expect delicate flavours of lemon and grapefruit with mandarin overtones.

Other reviews... Does this bottle look familiar? Does the name sound familiar, too? Ah, you’re probably thinking about Uncle Val’s Botanical Gin, which we reviewed upon release in 2012. Uncle Val’s Restorative Gin offers a somewhat different formulation. In lieu of juniper, cucumber, lemon, sage, and lavender — the key ingredients in Botanical — Restorative offers juniper, coriander, cucumber, and rose petals. If that sounds a lot like Hendrick’s, that’s because it is a lot like Hendrick’s. And once again, my tasting notes run to some unexpected places that are not wholly in keeping with the botanical bill. The nose presents juniper and lemony citrus (surprising, as there’s no citrus in the gin), a brisk and powerful introduction that should keep fans of more traditional, juniper-forward gins happy. The body folds in the florals — lots of rose petal character (considerably more than Hendrick’s) that fortunately manages to stay on this side of the perfume counter. The coriander adds an earthy element that is present mainly on the finish. Cucumbers are the only element that don’t really make a major showing. Intended to be “cooling,” the gin does have a gentler (and sweeter) let-down on the back end than you might expect, which takes things out on a refreshing and, well, restorative finish. I like this gin a bit better than the Uncle Val’s Botanical bottling, although with only four botanicals to rely on, Restorative has to work harder for your love. For the most part, it succeeds in earning it. Hendrick’s fans should definitely give this a shot to compare and contrast. - drinkhacker.com

...Bridging sweet and savory, this gin has a citrusy fragrance, which also shows up on the palate. Starting out with mild pineapple-like sweetness and traditional juniper, this gin segues into a spicy, mouthwatering finish with white and black pepper, coriander and ginger spice. 93 points - wineenthusiast.com

...More than just a Hendrick’s wannabe, Uncle Val’s Restorative Gin nicely combines a simple botanical bill into something vastly more complex. Classic gin fans will appreciate the juniper forwardness on the palate, while fans of contemporary style gins will love the beautiful way rose and cucumber blossom into notes of berry, lime, and peach. Overall, Restorative Gin is a fun gin that is worth seeking out. Recommended. - theginisgin

We're serious about gin.

Distilleries both small and large from every continent on earth can now lay claim to a Gin. You could be cynical and suggest it's merely to maintain cash flow while more 'serious' barrel aged spirits mature. Gin is easy and cheap. After all, it's just flavoured vodka at the end of the day, right? That line of thinking misrepresents all this spirit can be in the hands of visionaries and fanatics. The freshest botanicals in high quality alcohol result in an exotic amalgam of accents and supporting notes that no white spirit can match. Perfumed complexity and bracing intensity are not the characteristics of every gin we taste - hence, it can't be that easy to achieve. From Navy Strength to organic to sloe gin, browse our range today. A long departure from the once "fuddy-duddy" association of the genre, Vickers, Gordon's and other ubiquitous brands are threatened to be swallowed in a giant yawn by the progressive, quality-savvy new-gin devotee. Trending classifications such as 'New Western' style (juniper evident but not dominant) are gaining prominence as are the use of indigenous botanicals and varied spirit bases, including non-grain. Barrel ageing is also gaining momentum. The vast improvement in quality has resulted in texture rich, neat/sipping friendly spirits. Yet, the traditional English and Dutch styles remain more relevant than ever in honouring the cocktail classics. Learn more today...
