While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

The Domaine has some of the oldest average vine age anywhere in the Cote d'Or, and Chisa practices her amalgam of organics and biodynamics coined as "Bize-dynamics". Yields are kept low, and winemaking utilises a high percentage of whole-cluster fermentation.

The 2019 Bourgogne Les Perrières is beautiful, soaring from the glass with scents of rose petals, red berries and spices. Medium-bodied, sapid and perfumed, it's lively and charming, with powdery tannins and a long, lively finish. This is just irresistible. Drink 2020 - 2033.

One of the more muscular wines in the range is the 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Grands Liards, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping wine evocative of blackberries, rose petals, dried herbs and spices. Its generous core of fruit largely conceals a chassis of fine, youthfully chalky tannin.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)The 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Marconnets 1er Cru shows less stem character than the Les Fourneaux, opening with blackberry, briar, undergrowth and white pepper aromas. The palate is well balanced with plenty of freshness that proprietor Chisa Bize puts down to strict early-morning picking. Lightly spiced toward the finish, with a briny tang on the aftertaste. Give it 3–4 years in bottle. Drink 2023-2038.

The 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Talmettes wafts from the glass with scents of rose petals, peonies, exotic spices and potpourri. Medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, it's concentrated and gourmand, with a succulent core of fruit, ultra-refined tannins and a long, penetrating finish.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)The 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Talmettes 1er Cru is perhaps the most tertiary of Bize’s cuvées, with the stem character most pronounced at the moment. The harmonious, medium-bodied palate features fine tannins and well-judged acidity. The whole bunch is certainly less tangible toward the finish, which is very smooth and persistent. You want to take another sip straight after – a good sign! Drink 2022-2040.

2017 Simon Bize Savigny-les-Beaune RougeBurgundy, FRANCE$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkDomaine Simon Bize et Fils has to be one of the best kept secrets in Burgundy today. Famed for producing wines with impressive capacity for cellaring, under the care of Chisa Bize the wines are also more dynamic and show greater aromatic detail. The Domaine has some of the oldest average vine age anywhere in the Cote d'Or, and Chisa practices her amalgam of organics and biodynamics coined as "Bize-dynamics". Yields are kept low, and winemaking utilises a high percentage of whole-cluster fermentation.

The 2017 Savigny-lès-Beaune Village contains nearly 90% whole bunch fruit. It has a clean, precise bouquet, open and transparent, featuring red cherry and raspberry preserve aromas. The supple, medium-bodied palate offers chalky tannin and a light spiciness toward the approachable, charming finish.
88 Points
VinousA more complex if not prettier nose combines notes of raspberry, cherry, earth and humus. The succulent yet nicely precise middle weight flavors possess good depth and persistence on the balanced finish.

Quite deep in colour with a dark red core, black tinged edges and a bright dark red hue. Blossoming from the glass are perfumed aromatics of violets, sour and red cherries, subtle clove, fresh herbs and faint forest floor notes. Light in body and possessing a fresh feel, an elegant mix of red and sour cherry fruits are carried by vibrant acidity with elements of forest floor, fresh herb infusions and spice also chiming in. This is aromatically cooler and a bit more restrained though not quite as complex with its elegant blend of red currant, violet, plum and soft earth hints. I very much like the silky mouth feel of the more obviously mineral-inflected flavors that deliver fine length on the mildly austere finale. This is presently less complex than the best in the range but the delivery is absolutely lovely and if more depth develops this could be excellent in time.

Burghound.comThe 2017 Bourgogne Les Perrières is also excellent, wafting from the glass with a classic Bize bouquet of spicy plums, cherries and rose petals. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, ample and succulent, with fine chalky tannins and a subtly and mouthwateringly bitter finish.

Soho Road Vineyard was planted in '78, and is believed to be the oldest in the Bellarine Peninsula. Light, clear crimson hue; plum and cherry (both red and black); the wine has length and balance, its fruits trimmed by a savoury/foresty edge. If it had greater depth, it would have been in gold medal territory. Drink by 2026.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
