Named after Ben’s mother, Valerie, the Matriarch of the Riggs family. 15% of the fruit was kept as whole bunch to add texture and complexity as well as a little bit of tannin weight. The wine was fermented over an 8 day period and then pressed directly to a mixture of French barriques and puncheons with 20% being new oak where it matured for a period of 6 months.
Semi translucent red to dark red core with black toned edges and a light red hue. Perfumed like violet scents mix with red to dark cherry and wild strawberries followed by some forest floor, fresh herb and spicy cedar notes. Delicious dark cherry and strawberry fruits are delivered with intensity and possess a lovely supple feel. Lending further interest are notions of subtle anise, dried herbs, forest floor and spicy cedar. Excellent power wave with polished tannins and a long succulently fruited finish that’s quite savoury.

MV6 Clone Pinot Noir, from 30-year-old dry-grown vines. Fermented whole-bunch, stomped by foot and hand plunged once a day before gentle basket pressing. Matured in a 500L Seasoned Puncheon for 10 months with one rack leaving behind the gross lees.

A sweetness from fig hearts carries long on the finish. A vintage that threw a bit of all the weather extremes their way, this is a total success. Comprised of vineyards, cattle pastures and native bush, this estate stretches over 1100 acres making it one of the biggest land holdings in the Yarra Valley. The fruit for this wine was hand picked from select parcels of the estate’s best blocks which have an easterly aspect allowing the vines to avoid the harsh afternoon sun. Fermented in small batches over two weeks with minimal intervention the wine was then matured for 6 months in older French oak barriques and hogsheads.

The vineyard at Smythes Creek, west of Ballarat, is on 'harsh' goldfields soil and at a decent elevation of 425m. It delivers a sinewy, mineral-edged pinot noir, a style increasingly associated with the Ballarat region. Red fruits inhabit the wine, redcurrant, sour cherry, cranberry with nettle, weed, forest floor. The fine herbal line is maintained on the palate. It's a cold climate, firm expression unlike most pinots you taste. Drink by 2026.

All estate grown. 390 dozen. Creamy oak adds velvet to the texture but the fruit sizzles through, all red cherry and sweet-sour plum, spice notes studded throughout. It's in impeccable form and shape, its lines of tannin helping to usher it all along and keep things neat without interrupting the momentum a jot. Maybe there's some warmth but the fan of flavours doesn't really give it space to show. It's a lovely pinot, for now or later. Drink by 2025.
