Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

Named after Ben’s mother, Valerie, the Matriarch of the Riggs family. 15% of the fruit was kept as whole bunch to add texture and complexity as well as a little bit of tannin weight. The wine was fermented over an 8 day period and then pressed directly to a mixture of French barriques and puncheons with 20% being new oak where it matured for a period of 6 months.
Semi translucent red to dark red core with black toned edges and a light red hue. Perfumed like violet scents mix with red to dark cherry and wild strawberries followed by some forest floor, fresh herb and spicy cedar notes. Delicious dark cherry and strawberry fruits are delivered with intensity and possess a lovely supple feel. Lending further interest are notions of subtle anise, dried herbs, forest floor and spicy cedar. Excellent power wave with polished tannins and a long succulently fruited finish that’s quite savoury.

Matured 10 months in French oak (25% new). Huge drink-me appeal to this wine. Hits the spot time and again, with its ripe summer-pudding strawberry, cherry fruits, musk and baking spices with redcurrant bite. Sour-cherry fruits, lingering and light, together with taut tannins help define the palate. Sets the tastebuds alight. Drink by 2026.

This Nicks Secret Yarra Valley Pinot hails from a little-known boutique winery. Typically priced around $50 per bottle at the cellar door, it’s rarely found elsewhere. The expressive nose offers up scents of dark cherry, rhubarb and strawberry which are complimented by bramble, spicy dried herb and forest floor notes. Immensely complex and enticing, the bouquet shows dark berry, cured meat, porcini, bouquet garni, and elegant oak characters. The concentrated palate offers excellent depth and expansive mouthfeel, and silky texture and layers of grainy tannins wonderfully frame it. Robust and multi- layered with a sustained, alluring finish.

MV6 clone grown in Gruyere and matured in French barriques for 10 months. Red Currants, lingonberries and earthy rooibos tea. There is unfurling hibiscus and baked cherry pie. The palate spreads steadily with a wealth of acidity and powdery uniform tannins. There is underlying brown earth, cinnamon quills and cumin spice. A sweetness from fig hearts carries long on the finish. A vintage that threw a bit of all the weather extremes their way, this is a total success. Capturing abundant bright fruit and gentle graceful tannins with a core of savouriness. Drink now or cellar for up to 5-6 years. A wine that would show off served beside some pillows of gnocchi and sauteed mushrooms. Drink 2025-2031.

Harvested from the Gruyere district of the Yarra Valley, there’s plenty to get excited about this wine, it’s nose singing pure Pinot aromas – crimson fruits in the raspberry and cherry zone, some poached rhubarb earthiness as well, a back seat note of spearmint as well, all of this tumbling together as you taste, French oak spice offering some savoury seasoning to a lively and energised palate. A strong primary Pinot game with enough secondary interest to turn an engaged Burgundy head.

Comprised of vineyards, cattle pastures and native bush, this estate stretches over 1100 acres making it one of the biggest land holdings in the Yarra Valley. The fruit for this wine was hand picked from select parcels of the estate’s best blocks which have an easterly aspect allowing the vines to avoid the harsh afternoon sun. Fermented in small batches over two weeks with minimal intervention the wine was then matured for 6 months in older French oak barriques and hogsheads.

Gorgeously perfumed, light in body, silky textured and fresh.

Semi translucent red to dark red colour with black toned edges and a vibrant red hue. Captivating the olfactory senses is a gorgeously perfumed nose of violets, red cherries, strawberries and anise followed by hints of dried herbs, forest floor and spicy cedar. Light, silky textured and fresh, the palate is layered with delicious red cherry, winter strawberry and anise flavours. Infusions of fresh herbs, delicate forest floor and spicy cedar flash across the back half. Polished tannins with a long, elegant finish laced with red fruit. Gold medal winner at the Yarra Valley Wine Show 2024 with 95 points. A vinous bargain when one considers the pedigree of fruit.

20–30% whole bunches and matured in older barriques and hogsheads. A light, bright ruby red. Poised and nicely defined aromas of red fruits, gentle florals and a little spice. It's a touch closed, in a good way, on the medium-bodied, energetic and very well-balanced palate. A quite delicious and well-priced wine to drink over the next three to four years. Drink by 2030.

This delicious, vibrant Pinot Noir is produced from four different clones planted in vineyards located at Gumeracha, Forreston and Lobethal in the Adelaide Hills. 2024 was a cool but sunny vintage that produced low yields but high quality fruit. A fine Pinot Noir from the Adelaide Hills, the colour here is a bright crimson. The nose exhibits delightful notes of red fruits, chinotto, a hint of tomato bush and a lovely cherry cola character. This is sleek in every way with bright acidity and fine balance. An elegant, stylish Pinot with a lingering finish, this will provide pleasure for five to six years but is really drinking nicely at the moment. Drink 2024-2030.

The 2024 The **** Pinot Noir leads with an abundance of red berries and sumptuous spice: pink peppercorns, raspberry pip, anise and red apple. In the mouth, the wine is chalky, flavorsome and delicious. There's impressive concentration and density of flavor, but it's never at the expense of balance or elegance. This is so good! It's the best *** yet for ****. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2034.

MV6 clone, fermented in small batches with mix of cultured and wild yeast, maturation in French oak (new-6 yo) for 10 months. The vineyard at Smythes Creek, west of Ballarat, is on 'harsh' goldfields soil and at a decent elevation of 425m. It delivers a sinewy, mineral-edged pinot noir, a style increasingly associated with the Ballarat region. Red fruits inhabit the wine, redcurrant, sour cherry, cranberry with nettle, weed, forest floor. The fine herbal line is maintained on the palate. It's a cold climate, firm expression unlike most pinots you taste. Drink by 2026.

All estate grown. 390 dozen. Creamy oak adds velvet to the texture but the fruit sizzles through, all red cherry and sweet-sour plum, spice notes studded throughout. An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping? Please feel free to get in touch by calling us directly on 1800 069 295 or by emailing [email protected] and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
