While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

Aromas of raspberries, cherries, wild berries, peonies and coniferous forest floor preface the 2018 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru, a medium to full-bodied, lively and nicely concentrated wine framed by fine, powdery tannins. William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 2020)The 2018 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru has an outstanding bouquet of crushed iris and incense aromas filtering through mineral-rich black fruit. Such vibrancy! The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very good acidity and a wonderfully focused finish that is top-drawer. Superb.

Neal Martin - VinousFine pure clear red purple with a really classy nose, even elegant which is a rare descriptor for Latricières-Chambertin. There is equally a solid depth of fruit but still with some minerality as well. Huge sumptuous weight of fruit at the back, really cheerful. Great finish

Hand picked from from 80% estate-grown vines, planted 1998 and 2007. Cold soaked; fermented in 15 batches; 25% whole bunches; small proportion of wild ferment; regular pigéage and intermittent rémontage; matured 10 months in French oak barriques. There is an ever more pronounced stamp of terroir on Tasmania's increasingly demarcated subregions, and wines like this declare it with authority. The definition of Relbia pinot, at once deeply set in black cherry, black plum, anise and licorice, at the same time soaring with violet fragrance and all the energy of Tasmanian acidity and finely textured tannins. Is Relbia the Gevrey of the Tamar and is Chromy its Chambertin? This wine says, 'yes, and yes!' Drink by 2035.

Joseph Colin initially trained at Domaine Marc Colin, working alongside his brother, Pierre-Yves, to make the family wines. In 2016, Joseph decided to create his own Domaine, and, subsequently, inherited just over six hectares of vineyards from his family holdings, representing about nineteen different appellations, to start his exciting new venture. Keeping yields low, Joseph picks on the early side to retain an unmistakable purity and freshness in his wines. He likes the tension and vibrancy in his whites, and feels it is a signature of his output. Purity is a word that Joseph particularly associates with his wines, since he doesn't like heavy handed or reductive and oaky wines, but rather he allows the different terroirs to shine through truly in the glass. The wines display a tense and vibrant profile, championing minerality and finesse yet there is a comforting richness in the mid-palate.

This had just been bottled and not surprisingly there was a mild touch of reduction, yet it still permitted the red berry fruit nuances to be discerned. There is both fine vibrancy and delineation to the delicious middle weight flavors that exhibit a touch of bitter pit fruit character on the fruit-driven finale. Note that this competent effort should drink well after only a year or so of bottle aging. Drink 2024+.

This change has resulted in wines with greater refinement and vineyard character expression.
While much of the wine made at Domaine Faiveley comes from the many vineyard plots they own, they also continue to produce a small amount of wine made from purchased grapes. Described by wine commentator Mike Bennie as "one of Australia’s brightest young winemakers”, Joshua Cooper is steadily forging a reputation for thoughtful, elegant, and confident wines from grapes grown in Macedon and surrounds. Doug's Vineyard, near Romsey in the Macedon Ranges, was planted 20 years ago by the Newnham family, with mostly MV6 pinot noir and some 114 and 115 clone vines. The soil here is rich in rocky volcanic basalt, which limits vine growth and enhances the intensity of the fruit. After three weeks of fermentation, the wine was pressed to two new (Laurent “Magic Cask” thick stave, blonde toast), seven young (2-4yo Laurent “Magic Cask”) and ten old (6-10yo) oak Burgundian barrels for 12 months of maturation. The wine is then racked to stainless steel tanks for four more months of settling, before bottling without any additives except a small amount of sulphur.

The Lakey family established the Ray-Monde Vineyard in 1988 in South Gisborne, at an elevation of 400 meters above sea level, on the southern edge of the Macedon Ranges GI. This vineyard is unique to the area with it's gravelly ironstone and basaltic clay with very little topsoil and lots of "Bluestone" rocks just below the surface. After three weeks of fermentation, the wine was pressed to a single (Laurent “Magic Cask” thick stave, blonde toast), a single one-year-old Stockinger 300L and three old (6-10yo) oak Burgundian barrels for 12 months of maturation. The wine is then racked to stainless steel tanks for four more months of settling, before bottling without any additives except a small amount of sulphur.

Josh Cooper says ’22 is the best wine he’s made off this site to date. It’s more savoury and, in a way, structured compared with the Doug’s Vineyard pinot. This comes out with dark cherries, rhubarb, kirsch and licorice root, plus warm earth and bitumen aromas. Complex, rich but not heavy, fuller bodied, with ample tannins all plush and textural, quite distinctive in how they feel across the palate; then fine acidity corrals everything into one seamless offering. Drink 2024 - 2034.

Jane Faulkner - Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionThe 2022 Ray-Monde Vineyard Pinot Noir is dark in the glass and laden on the nose with graphite and ash, licorice, char and black cherries. The wine is earthy and steely, with black pudding, blood plum, tart cherry and spice and a crackle of dry autumn leaf. It leans more on the structure and spice characters than it does on fruit volume here. It's a compact wine.
I love the tannins; they start sparse but build through the mid-palate and rise up through the fruit through the finish. The tannins are chewy, as opposed to drying. Lovely. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam. Drink 2023 - 2035.

Erin Larkin - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateRay-Monde always has me in mind of Rayman the video game character. Instead we have a regenerative-farmed, mixed agriculture property with some pretty damn fine vines on the place – Gisbourne here we are.
As is the motif of the 2022 pinot noirs from Josh Cooper, there is savouriness writ large. Dark cherry, cola, sooty spices, paperbark, black tea and chamomile floral lift with some violet notes in the mix. It saunters along the palate, hugging the corners, drying things out in a broad swish of web-like lacy tannin. It finishes with a solid, black tea chew and feels brooding and intense, but with a very palatable, gentle juiciness that lets you in right now. It feels like one for further on, perhaps. Drink 2025 - 2035.

I’ve been in love with Doug for a few years now, well I don’t know the man but the vineyard sure produces exceptional fruit as this is an exquisite wine. Cherries and kirsch, raspberry coulis and an abundance of exotic spices with some twiggy, whole-bunch punch, chinotto and a blood orange tang, too. In other words, there’s complexity and detail. Fruit and oak tannins frame the mid-weighted palate, which is plush and almost sensual. Overall, tannins are silky and glide across the palate helped on the way by fine acidity. Wow, what a wine. Jane Faulkner - Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionFrom Macedon Ranges and a site at 500-or-so metres above sea level. Love the idea of a vineyard owned by a ‘Doug’.
Strange, but I went straight to the wines of Marechal in Burgundy. Something about the expansive but light nature of the wine, the relaxed feel to texture, the little haze of tannins, loads of perfume both primary fruited and herbal. It’s got sinew and pucker, a strong sense of savouriness, a sizzle of cooling acidity and a great stretch of flavour and texture. It’s beautiful, really, and the gist is that it delivers grape character from all angles. I want to drink the hell out of this. Drink 2023 - 2030.

The best Pinot Noir blend to date. Perfectly ripe vibrant fruit as well as the complexity these sites innately deliver. A lovely mix of delicate red berries, rose and spice from Doug’s Vineyard and the dark, guttural depth of Ray-Monde. A fantastic introduction to the style of Joshua's Pinot wines and while approachable and delicious right now, it is destined to age well over the medium term. -

From the regenerative farmed Ray-Monde Vineyard in South Gisborne. There’s usually a strong thread of savouriness in the wines from this place, and that continues here.
Very savoury, game meat, sweet, turned earth, dried leaf, truffle and dark cherry fruit characters to sniff on. Darker berries to taste, not a lick of sweet fruit anywhere here, truffle and crushed rock minerality with licks of eucalyptus and mint just barely there. Washes over the palate beautifully, a loose knit expression but with a building, lacy web of granitic tannin. An impressive, outstanding pinot noir very much marching to its own beat. Complexity, detail, interest. One to pause over in big glasses, and great right now. Drink 2022-2030+

It’s a beauty. Bright and fresh, succulent, really fine boned, gossamer textured, sour cherry, floral, pretty-savoury spices too. Has this really lovely, faint minerally edge too. Tannins chime in from mid palate and the wine firms up beautifully. Fantastic expression, so delightful.

A fantastic entry point to my 2021 Pinot Noir’s, comprised of two thirds Doug’s Vineyard and one third Ray-Monde Vineyard. Aged only in used piece, incredibly fresh with red berry and cherry, rose and violet, there is a fantastic concentration in 2021 which will see this cuvee mature into the medium term, while also offering seductive drinking now.
Vintage conditions saw a late season producing fresh wines of remarkable intensity, depth and balance. It is a very special year and one that will age extremely well. These earlier release wines provide and exciting glimpse at the quality to expect come the single vineyard release in July. -

From the regenerative farm of Ray-Monde Vineyard comes pinot noir of Joshua Cooper’s bidding. Ray-Monde always puts me in mind of the Rayman video games, for some reason.
Scents of ripe cherry, brambles and undergrowth, sweet manure, truffle, old campfire and wet bark. Savoury as. Flavours savoury too, tannins gummy and late to come into play, the wine finishes a bit short and with a sappy and sooty, smoked meat finish. Dark cherry, dark plum flavours before that, even a touch of espresso and clove in the mix. A darker, earthier release, a bit disjointed at present, the quiet smoky spice element a niggle. Still, a charming wine of grand savouriness on hand. Drink: 2021 - 2029.

A tough year for Macedon in 2020 but a silver lining for Joshua Cooper and family was getting their own piece of dirt to which they will close-plant vines. The site is half way between Daylesford and Kyneton some 600 metres above sea level and looking over Virgin Hills estate, a winery that I know forms part of Josh’s inspiration for wines and winemaking. Anyway, this is pinot from Doug’s place.
A curious wine in that it’s 12% alcohol and feels more like 14% or there abouts, Quite thick set, broad shouldered, dense and dark. The perfume shows ripe plum, pickled cherries, old spice cupboard, smoked paprika aromas and some mulchy green herb in the mix. Flavours are richer and dark fruited, shows with malt-extract notes and thick tannin layers on palate and tongue. Acidity is cool in this, the wine deeply savoury and brooding in fruit character. That dark fruit rolls long and the finish is complete with smoked paprika and a light mocha note that turns a little sooty. Most of the elements mesh here, the wine a feast for the senses, with seasonal character on show. Drink 2021 - 2028.

It’s a pretty Australian thing calling a wine ‘Doug’s Vineyard’, no fancy domaine this or that or something aspiration. Just a piece of dirt with some vines in it that a bloke called Doug farms in Macedon Ranges, Victoria. This feels like it comes from a ‘Mac Forbes pick’, in that the wine is quite bony, reluctant and tight, lean and lower in alcohol, firm and unyielding in its youth. That being said, it feels like there’s lots of detail in the wine, and, importantly, it sure is vibrant. Scents of wet fern, fresh picked green herb, just ripe cranberries, cardamom and, curiously, Worcestershire sauce. The palate is more straight laced, red cherries, sour-ish though, more of that cardamon and some clove spice, blood orange acidity and something ferrous to close in the whisper of light, puckering tannins. It’s racy and strict, pale in its personality, you could say a little thin, but all the detail is there. Needs time, but is beautiful in its shy, quiet way.

The 2016 Spätburgunder “S” from Weingut Keller is made up primarily from a parcel of twenty-five year-old vines in the Morstein vineyard, with just a touch of production added from both the Bürgel and the Frauenberg. This is a lovely, entry level pinot noir from Klaus-Peter, offering up a lovely bouquet of black cherries, a touch of blood orange, woodsmoke, a good base of chalky soil tones and a bit of cedar. On the palate the wine is medium-full, complex and tangy, with moderate tannins, good focus and grip and a long, intensely flavored and quite stylish finish. Good juice. 2021-2050.

From younger, roughly 20-year-old vines, foot-trodden after six or seven days and fermented with 40 to 50% whole clusters, the 2015 Frauenberg Spätburgunder GG is pure, ripe and fresh on the nose, with noble oak, intense cherry and dark berry aromas. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, pure, straight and juicy German "Geverey" with fine, fresh tannins, good grip and an aromatic finish. The Frauenberg is even finer and fresher than the Bürgel and offers great vitality, grip and tension. A pretty Burgundian-style Pinot Noir with mealy tannins that will certainly integrate soon. Tasted at the domain in August 2017.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate #233 (Nov 2017)While there are lovely intimations of ripe red and black raspberry on the nose, sea breeze and meat stock dominate. On the polished palate, fresh berry juiciness is mingled with beef stock and a bone-meal-like impression of marrowy, smoky and chalky suffusion. Taut berry skin and seedy crunch offer mouth-shaking invigoration on a superbly sustained, mouthwatering, multifaceted finish that does justice to Pinot’s potential for expressing animal and mineral flavors.

David Schildknecht - VinousMedium depth of cherry red colour, ruby rim. In its fragrance the Frauenberg, just like the Bürgel, puts fruit first, red and dark berries complemented by a delicate notion of ripe plum. The only clue to the employment of oak-ageing comes from a gentle fragrance of smoky bacon drifting across the glass. On the palate, firm but ripe tannins and juicy acidity are comfortably accommodated by a viscous texture, putting the quality of structure on par with a generous display of fruit, in which raspberries, cherries and plums take centre stage. Salty and smoky notes mark the contribution of minerality and oak ageing. Very tempting to drink now, but laying down should bring even greater rewards.

Keller's 2015 Bürgel Spätburgunder GG has a clear, deep, pure and reductive bouquet of ripe cherries with a hint of oak and nougat. Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate #233 (Nov 2017)Penetrating ripe red berry aromas mingle with a faintly coniferous green-resinous note that manages to integrate itself successfully on the palate. Hints of sea breeze and leather complete the aromatic profile and, similarly, have their savory counterparts on a silken-textured palate. A mouthwatering suggestion of veal stock adds to the appeal of a sappy, impressively persistent, slightly toasty-oak-inflected finish kept lively by irrepressibly juicy tang of cherry and red currant. This is going to be a real charmer as it matures, and is certainly a wine that does delicious justice to Pinot’s fruity, herbal, animal and mineral dimensions.

David Schildknecht - VinousRaspberry red of medium intensity, purple rim. Nose opens with a fine cherry fragrance, and with more air comes more fruit, cassis, not pungent, but in a delightfully restrained way. Obviously, Klaus Peter has used barriques, but in such a subtle way that you have to sniff hard to detect a mere hint of cigar box. The palate confirms that the oak has been toasted most gently, leaving the taste buds to concentrate on wonderfully pure fruit. Tannins are firm but not furry, and their subtle bitter expression works in perfect harmony with an animating acidity. Fine spices and a delicate salty tang add value to a long finish.

Translucent cherry red. The most beautiful red-fruit aroma but there’s also a light spice and a savoury serious character to balance the flirtatious fruit. Luscious red cherry on the palate and so fresh and silky. Utterly gorgeous and elegant. There’s depth and structure but the tannins are so fine that the structure is all hidden by the fruit. Beautifully built and long. Opens in the glass to a more scented, almost floral character, finely fresh. Moreish and complete. The word ‘slender’ comes to mind. Julia Harding MW - jancisrobinson.comThe 2016 Bürgel pinot noir is absolutely superb and goes to show just how good one can make a pinot noir from German clones if the vines are old and the elevage is gentle enough to allow the fruit and soil tones to take center stage. The bouquet is superb, wafting from the glass in a complex mix of red berries, black cherries, woodsmoke, bitter chocolate, chalky and a nice touch of fresh herb tones in the upper register. Mid cherry red. A little darker than the Bürgel. A little more spice, darker fruit but still red fruit, more intense on the nose, less immediate charm. You can see the stems but they are part of the fabric and not intrusive. A little firmer than the Bürgel but while the tannins are firmer, they are velvety smooth already, al dente. A little bit of oak sweetness but this is meshed with the fruit. There’s an attractive dusty/mineral quality that I associate with limestone. Needs a little longer but should have a really long life.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
