Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago. Domaine Charles Audoin was formed in 1972 by Charles and his oenologist wife Marie-Francoise, starting with three hectares in Marsannay. Their holding has now grown to around 14 hectares that captures some of the best parcels in Marsannay. Their son Cyril joined his father in 2000, and is now in charge of both vineyard and winemaking activities for the Domaine. Cyril is increasingly focused on vineyard health, to deliver wines with pure varietal expression and a sense of place. They are among the most serious wines from the area, and while juicy and approachable young, have the capacity to age gracefully for many years.

I like the savory olive notes here, with peppercorns and salted almonds amongst the red berry fruit. Some nutmeg. Creamy and layered on the palate, with a medium body and silky yet very present tannins. Powerful fruit, with a deep savory and salty element. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Deep dark red black colour with a dark red hue. Very expressive nose with aromas of dark to black cherries, violets, dried clove and hints of anise blooming out of the glass. Some forest floor and spicy cedar notes also chime in. Rich dark to black cherry and wild strawberry fruits power across the palate with some anise, clove, forest floor and spicy cedar elements lying underneath. Slightly grainy in its feel with relatively polished tannins for Pommard. Concludes long, deeply fruited and expansive.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Plenty of fresh plum, black cherry and a touch of blood orange on the nose of this very satisfying Pommard. Stacks of healthy tannins are already beautifully integrated in the fullish body. In spite of the considerable power, this has a remarkably elegant finish for this appellation. Drink or hold.

Once again there is a coolness to the markedly restrained aromas of airy red and dark pinot fruit, pungent earth and smoke. The middle weight flavors are not as dense or voluminous, but they are definitely stonier and particularly so on the linear and borderline strict finish. This youthfully austere effort is a bit awkward today, but it appears to have the stuffing to fill out in time and my projected range confers the benefit of the doubt in this regard. Drink to 2028+.

Very ripe, but also very fresh red-cherry nose. Bold and generous, as you expect from Pommard, but with gentle tannins on the medium-to full-bodied palate. Only at the finish do they show a hint of the dryness for which the appellation is renowned, but the texture remains wonderfully velvety.

The 2019 Pommard En Mareau is very promising, wafting from the glass with notes of red berries, plums, dried herbs, spices and raw cocoa. Medium to full-bodied, bright and supple, with melting tannins and a lively core of fruit, much like Audoin's Fixin, this is a cuvée that has been more and more elegantly rendered in recent vintages.

Like the Fixin, this too is aromatically quite cool and restrained with its reticent aromas of herbal tea, red pinot fruit and discreet newly turned earth scents. The relatively suave and rounded medium weight flavors possess a lovely mouthfeel, all wrapped in a saline-inflected and youthfully austere finale. This too is quite good for its level and worth checking out. Drink 2026+.

Produced from certified organic Pinot Noir and Gamay grapes. Deep dark red black tinged colour with a dark red hue. Fragrant spicy red plum, fresh herb, incense and earthy cedar scents mix with violet notes. Light, elegant and pretty, the palate is delicately flavoured with sour to red cherry fruits, infusions of incense, earth and spicy herbs. Bright crunchy like acidity with slightly chalky tannins and a tart finish.

A very ripe nose is comprised by notes of both red and dark currant along with a background hint of a kind of reduction that the Burgundians refer to as bourgeon de cassis. There is fine freshness and verve to the moderately dense, powerful, and muscular larger-scaled flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract before concluding in a dusty, austere, and firm finale. This is also relatively supple and opulent that will need to develop depth over the course of its aging curve. Drink 2029+.

The 2019 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru was bottled in June and July ‘21. Very perfumed and floral scents on the nose, dark cherries, bergamot, damp earth and touches of clove, later hints of violet and blood orange (traits that I observed out of barrel). This is nicely detailed. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins, fine acidity, lightly spiced with a classy espresso-tinged finish that lingers in the mouth. Excellent. Drink 2025-2050.

The colour has evolved more than the 2018. Interesting complex nose, a mix of the warmer pinot style, riper and more supple than the 2018, you could almost consider drinking this until you come to the end of the palate where the density builds. A light menthol touch with some cinnamon. Enough acidity at the back, tannins hidden by the fruit, almost saline at the finish. Ultimately more character than the ’18 though with a slightly riper fruit profile.

A very ripe yet agreeably fresh nose reflects notes of blue berry, plum liqueur and violet that are cut with spice, menthol and earth hints. The exceptionally rich and impressively full-bodied flavors evidence a taut muscularity, all wrapped in an overtly powerful and lingering finish that is naturally sweet. As one would reasonably expect this is quite firm; indeed it's borderline rustic. Drink from 2032+.

The 2017 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is also unusually saturated in hue this year, though Millet reports having done no more pigeage than usual. Offering up aromas of dark cherries, wild berries, cassis, dark chocolate, peony and caramelized orange rind, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and elegantly fine boned, with chalky structuring tannins, a pure core of fruit and a long, fragrant finish. Despite its disconcertingly deep hue this is one of the most supple, elegant renditions of the de Vogüé Bonnes Mares in the last decade.

The 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a complex bouquet that is slightly more Musigny in personality than I expected. There is mainly dark fruit here, mixed with potpourri and incense and becoming more flamboyant as it aerates in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, and quite compact in style because, as François Millet noted, these 2017s are beginning to close down. But there is certainly good density here, and an enticing tensile finish. Drink 2024-2048.

The de Vogüé Bonnes Mares comes from a sizeable 2.7ha on red clay soils and is always the most structured and ‘masculine’ of the domaine's wines. It's dark and intense, with violet and blueberry scents, a plush, concentrated palate, stylish 35% new wood and the depth and concentration to age. Rich and very appealing. Drink 2026 - 2037.

Somewhat surprisingly this is even more floral with its cool and ultra-fresh nose of various dark berries, sandalwood and a lovely array of spices. I very much like the seductive texture of the big-bodied flavors that aren't quite as dense or structured as those of the Suchots but they're notably finer, all wrapped in a dusty, palate coating and gorgeously long finish. Deep bright red-ruby. Blackberry, licorice and violet aromas are sharpened by the remaining malic acidity. Juicy, precise and imploded, with the wine's chiseled aspect no doubt accentuated by the malic acidity. Firm tannins saturate the palate on the very long finish.

A ripe but cool and restrained nose features relatively elegant violet and rose petal aromas as well as those of earthy red cherry liqueur and spice nuances. Here too there is terrific concentration to the intense, palate staining and perceptively muscular flavors that again coat the mouth with dry extract while offering a superbly persistent finish that is blatantly structured but not particularly austere; indeed this could even be approached young. Healthy dark red with ruby tones. Black cherry and licorice aromas are lifted by a violet topnote. Tight and minty on entry, then a bit more pliant in the middle, conveying an impression of medicinal reserve to its dark flavors of black cherry, spices and minerals. Finishes with substantial tooth- and tongue-dusting tannins. This wine also had a late malo and comes off as very backward today, in need of more élevage to gain in flesh and sweetness.

20% whole bunch vinification from Herbues, Lavières and Allots, one third of each. Dense black centre, nutty walnut nose, very concentrated. Older vines on the Vosne side of the appellation. Really intense black with purple rim. Lush luxuriant cherries, sun-dried but sumptuous. There is a huge weight of fruit with good acidity, and a very long finish in this lush style. No more than 14% alcohol. 60% whole bunch. Pretty and deep purple. The aromatics have been nicely extended by the whole bunch. This is pretty massive through the middle of the palate, the fruit darkens and then the whole bunch aspect shows drier fruit to finish, but I like the final fruit.

It is exceptionally rare to happen upon a new Burgundy domaine that is both set for greatness and firmly under the radar in equal measure. Domaine Coquard Loison-Fleurot (CLF) is such a property, however given they enjoy an enviable collection of six Grand Cru vineyards, and the exceptional winemaking skills shown by the talented Thomas Colladot, CLF won't remain hidden for long. For many years the grapes from the property were sold to negociants, however as these contracts begun to expire in the early 2000's they started taking back the production, and brought on Thomas Colladot in 2010 to oversee winemaking duties.

While not certified, organic practices are used in the vineyards, with all fruit hand harvested and whole cluster fermentation used where and as desired depending on the plot and vintage conditions. New oak varies between 30-50% for most wines, and élevage lasts between 15 and 18 months, before bottling is conducted in-house. The wines of Domaine Coquard Loison Fleurot are characterised by their purity and transparency of their terroirs.

This Chambolle-Musigny is sourced from the lieu-dit of Les Gamaires.

Ripe and attractively fresh aromas include those of black cherry coulis, spice and violet. The very rich and generously proportioned medium weight flavors possess a succulent mid-palate that contrasts somewhat with the textured and lingering finish where the supporting tannins are a bit raspy. The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village, whose malolactic finished at the beginning of September, matured in 25-30% new oak, has a much more defined and fresher nose than the Bourgogne Rouge with lively black cherry and crushed strawberry scents. The palate is ripe and sweet, yet nicely controlled, the oak neatly integrated with quite a precocious tart finish. Maybe it just needs a little more persistency, but this will do nicely. (This blend includes 20% whole bunch. I tried a 40% whole bunch that is being trialled in three barrels. I actually preferred this, so it will either be blended together or bottled separately - no decision has been made yet.) Drink 2025-2038.

Black with a bit of purple. The bouquet offers a similar style of ultra lush raspberry that we saw in the Bourgogne. An explosion of fruit, with density, some firm structure behind, not too much acidity but all a cohesive unit with enough fruit to cover the 13.8% alcohol. An early malolactic makes this wine easier to read.

This is the first wine to exhibit any appreciable reduction and it's enough to knock down the nose. The 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru had only finished its malolactic two weeks before my visit. Though I spent time with the sample from barrel, I think it was just a bit too soon to really get a reading on the nose. The palate is more expressive and harmonious: crunchy black cherry and blueberry fruit, fine structure, a touch of white pepper leaving the mouth tingling on the finish. Give this 4-6 years in bottle because there is a fine Charmes-Chambertin here. Drink 2026-2048.

A vivid and vibrant fresh purple, reflecting the low pH (3.30). The nose is exuberant and vivacious at the same time. This is a late malolactic wine and has been reduced, but not today. Despite the thick texture and super charged raspberry, signs of higher alcohol (in fact 15%) I don’t feel any specific heat and the Charmes-Chambertin shows a pretty long finish.

23 barrels – lucky man! Inky purple black, in colour. Starts a bit blockbuster for Echezeaux, then refines somewhat. Still, this is not for the fainthearted. Quite firm tannins but ripe enough.

This Morey Saint Denis is sourced from the lieu-dit of Les Crais Gillon, Clos Solon, En Seuvrey and Corvée Creunille.

There is a top note of kirsch to the earthier and spicier aromas of red and dark berry liqueur. The delicious, round and caressing flavors possess very good punch while exuding a refreshing salinity on the dusty and palate coating finale. Drink from 2027+.

The 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Village, which contains around 15% whole bunch, had only finished its malo a month prior to my visit. It has a dense, intense, blackcurrant and cassis-scented bouquet that will need time to mellow. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and fleshy but the black cherry fruit is framed by fine tannins and the finish is so silky smooth that you cannot help falling for its charms. Drink 2025-2040.

3 new barrels in 11. Just as deep and dark purple, with a powerful nose that is nonetheless a little bit less lush. Only a bit though as the very dark fruit takes over with firm tannins and good acidity, or even salinity. Blacker fruit all round compared to the Chambolle. 14% alcohol

Once again, the amphore demonstrates its advantages in very ripe vintages as the nose is appealingly fresh with an even spicier array of plum, violet, anise and cinnamon scents. The delicious middle weight flavors possess a gorgeous texture if perhaps not quite the same complexity on the balanced and overtly stony finish. I suspect that more depth will progressively develop over time. Drink 2031+.

Medium deep crimson purple, the bouquet is soft and ripe, at this stage I think I may be preferring the barrel. Sweetness comes through then a drier note, this is still a gorgeous wine, but without quite the same chiselled limestone note which demonstrated the authority of the barrel-aged Clos des 60 Ouvrées.

Very ripe but agreeably fresh aromas include those of baked plum, anise, clove, violet, lavender and an interesting hint of sandalwood. The sleeker and more refined medium-bodied flavors flash more evident minerality though decidedly less power and muscle on the super-saline infused finish. This is classy, harmonious and a wine that should reward a decade plus of cellaring. Drink 2031+.

A dense deep purple. The nose has a succulence of perfectly ripe raspberry, which shows great promise, and it has the chiselled limestone purity that gives it exceptional breeding. Superb length and a haunting nobility of fruit that will only improve with age. Perfect balance.

A restrained, and equally pure, cool and airy nose reluctantly offers up a pretty array of red and black pinot fruit, rose petal, spice and an interesting hint of orange peel. The sleek and wonderfully refined flavors are lacy but punchy while also brimming with minerality on the tension-filled bitter cherry pit-infused finish that exhibits excellent length. This is lovely stuff though a wine that will require at least some patience.

The first sample, served blind in the pairing of Clos des 60 Ouvrées. Fractionally the lighter colour. The nose is significantly ripe with some dark plum fruit. This fills the mouth, some slightly floral notes at the very back but in the middle some clean fresh raspberry and strawberry and very good length.

An airy, cool and slightly more elegant nose isn't quite as spicy, but it is certainly higher-toned with its combination of red and dark currant, cherry and discreetly floral-suffused aromas. There is once again excellent energy to the strikingly well-detailed flavors that are almost as mineral-laden, all wrapped in a refreshing and youthfully austere finale. Good stuff and despite being firmly structured, this could actually be enjoyed young.

The second sample, served blind in the pairing of Clos de la Bousse d'Or. In this pairing there was little evident difference in evolution between the two samples. This one was a little deeper in colour. Fresh and racy on the palate, perhaps more alpine strawberries, very floral, extremely long.

Healthy dark red. Aromas of purple berries, black cherry and licorice convey a musky quality as well as a subtle liqueur-like aspect. Fat and very ripe but not a sweet style; in fact, this is less expressive and complex than Landanger's other two amphora wines in 2016. Suggestions of black pepper and herbs carry through to the finish, which conveys an impression of thickness but is still quite primary and undeveloped, even a bit pinched. Here I much prefer the "regular" version of 60 Ouvrées.

Once again there is a distinctly restrained character to the pure and exuberantly spicy dark currant and raspberry aromas. The 2016 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru has more richness and intensity than the Corton-Bressandes at this early stage, with layers of black cherry and raspberry coulis, brown spices and sous-bois surfacing with time. There is certainly good complexity here. The palate is fresh and detailed on the entry, fine-grained tannin, well-judged acidity and a lively, judiciously spiced finish that feels long and caressing. Bon vin.

Full ruby-red. Darker and more reticent on the nose than the Bressandes, conveying a stronger element of stony minerality and a note of licorice. Then vivacious and sharply delineated in the mouth but much more closed than the Bressandes owing to its mineral energy. Finishes with suave, fine-grained tannins and excellent grip. Very classy juice!

The ripe and ultra-fresh aromas are from the darker side of the fruit spectrum while including plenty of spice, warm earth, menthol and plenty of sauvage character. There is both fine detail and a beguiling texture to the equally broad-shouldered and even more mineral-inflected flavors that possess even better complexity on the balanced and hugely long finish. Unusually, this appears to be just a bit less structured than the Bressandes and should also be approachable on the younger side if that's your preference.

This is actually surprisingly similar to the Bonnes Mares if perhaps a bit more elegant. The 2020 Musigny Grand Cru is 100% whole bunch as usual. This has a very complete and delineated bouquet with mineral-rich red berry fruit, touches of pressed rose petal emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, moderate depth, quite "linear’ for a Musigny with a very sapid finish. Not bad, although I feel this is slightly dictated by the stem addition at the moment. I would be intrigued to revisit this after bottling because it is difficult seeing which way this is going to head. Drink 2028-2050.

Two and a half barrels, one new, with 100% whole bunches. Both these elements show a little in the very youthful wine. Otherwise the nose is discretion itself, before the fruit explodes in magical fashion at the start of the palate. Yet is there quite the weight and persistence of a truly great wine? There is the right acidity and a fine sense of balance, but the wine stops short of the full majesty of a truly great Musigny this year.

100% whole bunch vinification. Pretty pink purple, no especial depth, and doesn’t need it. Another sublime bouquet coupling the floral with the purity of clean berry fruit. Domaine Faiveley was founded in 1825, and while they have been known for producing outstanding quality wines throughout this time, they are widely considered one of the most improved domaines in Burgundy over the last decade. Since taking over from his father Francois, Erwan Faiveley has made a deliberate decision to emphasise freshness and purity of fruit rather than fruit extraction, and at times, excessive use of new oak. This change has resulted in wines with greater refinement and vineyard character expression.

Full-bodied, layered and velvety, it's concentrated and multidimensional, with a dramatically textural, perfumed palate and a long, saline finish.

The 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a very delineated, quite floral bouquet with rose petal infusing the mixture of red and black fruit. There is a touch of sous-bois that become accentuated with time. The palate is fleshy and almost confit-like on the entry, but the acidity keeps this on an even keel. Plush, luxuriant...almost sexy (I dislike the word apropos Burgundy) but there is something very sensual about this wine. Very long in terms of length. Superb. Drink 2027-2055.

A fine even and fairly deep purple. The bouquet starts quietly but then opens out in a very floral style. Pretty dancing fruit, seems light on its feet but there is certainly body behind, and a little more ripeness but still harnessed. A long and dancing finish too.

Markedly spicier and very pretty aromas include those of red and dark raspberry, herbal tea and a whiff of the sauvage, all of which is trimmed in subtle oak. The succulent, refined and stony medium weight flavors possess a lovely sense of underlying tension on the caressing punch punchy and balanced finale. Drink: 2030+.

Notes of dark berries, cherries, sweet spices, rose petals and smoked duck preface the 2020 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Damodes, a medium to full-bodied, velvety and vibrant wine with a concentrated core of fruit, tangy acids and powdery tannins.

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Damodes 1er Cru showed some reduction on the nose, but there is plenty of fruit here. The palate is medium-bodied, quite elegant and pure, smooth in texture with a discrete pinch of white pepper and allspice towards the finish. I like this manner in which this builds in the mouth. Juicy and mouthfilling. Drink: 2025-2045.

Bright, dark, dense purple colour, rich succulent and sumptuous raspberry but happily without coarseness, just exuberance. Some black fruit, this does show signs of being high octane but is rained in by the delicious freshness of the acidity.

A slightly riper and exuberantly spicy nose is composed by notes of black cherry, dark raspberry, the sauvage and a whiff of earth. There is superb mid-palate density to the opulent yet serious big-bodied flavors that are shaped by a firm core of dense and very firm tannins on the hugely long yet impeccably well-balanced finish. This muscular effort is also going to need extended cellaring if you wish to see its full, and ample, potential realized.

Wild and brooding, Faiveley's 2019 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru wafts from the glass with aromas of smoked meats, spices, wild berries and forest floor. Full-bodied, layered and sapid, it's broad and muscular, with a deep core of fruit and youthfully chalky tannins. This is a serious Mazis built for the long haul.

The 2019 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru was reduced on the nose, making it difficult to read at the moment, though the palate is certainly well balanced, featuring crunchy black fruit laced with red currant and a generous sprinkling of cracked black pepper toward the finish. Intuition tells me this is a great Mazis-Chambertin; it will just need time.

A darker purple than the Charmes or Latricières. Power on the nose, this is a big boy this year which isn’t always the case – the Faiveley Mazis can be more floral in some years. But it is Muscular Mazis in 2019. Very significant weight of dark raspberry, just a little bit of heat behind, then some acidity and even minerals maintaining the balance.

Here too there is a mentholated top note to the much earthier aromas of poached plum, underbrush, red currant and touches of the sauvage. There is excellent verve to the equally broad-shouldered and muscular flavors that possess outstanding complexity on the tannic, serious and beautifully long finish that is a bit less austere than it usually is at this early juncture. This beautifully well-made effort will also require extended bottle age to reveal its full potential, but it should very much be worth the wait.

The 2019 Corton Grand Cru Clos des Cortons Faiveley opens in the glass with notes of cassis, wild berries, warm spices, orange rind, rose petals, espresso roast and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it's vibrant and lively, marrying notable concentration with fine-boned structure. Long and mineral, it's more ethereal than its rich, muscular 2018 counterpart.

The 2019 Corton Clos des Cortons Faiveley Grand Cru comes from the 2.77-hectare monopole. This was actually quite closed on the nose compared with Faiveley’s Gevrey Grand Crus, coming across earthy and rather sullen at first, and opening with earthy/woodland aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and harmonious on the entry. The fine, lightly spiced finish reveals clove and touches of graphite. Nice persistence here. This holds a lot of promise.

Very dense red purple, lively though, and holds up after the sensuality of Clos de Bèze. Stricter. Darker fruit, very good structure here, fills out the palate, dark raspberry, with slightly more severe tannins. Very good fruit acid balance. This works very well, and has a distinguished future. Lightly saline to finish.

The 2017 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is a blend of the original Faiveley parcel plus around 0.5 hectares gained through their acquisition of Dupont-Tisserandot. It has quite an intense bouquet of blackberry, briar and wild strawberry scents, coming across a little burly compared to the more nuanced Latricières-Chambertin. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, the palate perhaps showing more potential than the aromatics at the moment. There is very good weight here, fine mineralité and quite a precise, sustained finish. Give it five or six years in bottle.

Dark red with ruby highlights. Complex, inviting aromas of black raspberry, peony, toast, smoke and game. Compellingly rich, creamy wine with a captivating mixture of dark berries, flowers and toasty oak. Maintains its thickness and body straight through to the very ripe, long, suavely tannic finish. A beauty.

A pungent nose of wood and reduction renders the nose impossible to evaluate fairly. Otherwise there is a super-sleek and intense palate impression to the imposingly-scaled flavors that possess more size and weight if slightly less minerality than those of the Latricières while flashing excellent length on the moderately austere finish. This is also textbook.

Matured in predominately seasoned French oak. Semi translucent dark red colour with black toned edges and a vibrant crimson red hue. Pronounced red to dark cherry and strawberry scents infused with clove jump out of the glass trailed by hints of anise, earth and spice. Light in body the palate features juicy cherry fruits laced with dried clove over an earth and subtle dried meat back drop. Slightly grainy but otherwise polished tannins finishing fresh, elegant and very spicy.

A mentholated top note is present on the markedly ripe aromas of cassis, earth and bitter chocolate. A more deeply pitched and brooding nose only grudgingly reveals its aromas of cassis plum liqueur and pungent earth where the latter is also found on the vibrant and well-detailed big-bodied and tautly muscular flavors that deliver excellent depth and persistence. This is not as dense as the best in the range, but it should have no trouble amply repaying 12 to 15 years of bottle aging. Drink through 2032+.

Almost black in the middle. More a very intense sun dried dark cherry bouquet than raisins though. Pretty heady stuff either way round. Super sumptuous with this exciting red cherry fruit as well as black, and good acidity. It would be easily possible to fall in love with this, even if it is more powerful than I really like.

This is also quite firmly reduced and unreadable at present. The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru was a little more reduced than Gouges’s other cuvées, opening gradually to reveal blackberry, wild hedgerow and incense. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, lithe and silky in the mouth, and fleshy with a judicious touch of white pepper toward the finish. The shortfall in grip and substance is sufficiently compensated with elegance. Drink 2024 - 2048.

Very reductive. Dense, almost sombre purple. A little toastiness too. Will rack end November to bottle Feb/March, and it needs the racking. Sweetly ripe, very dense, dark cherry here, not too cooked but it is quite a monster on the dark side. Just give it twenty years… Just a little fresher at the finish.

The 2016 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru les Vaucrains was cropped at a paltry 11 hectoliters per hectare due to the frost. I have to admit that the aromatics lacked the natural harmony and cohesion of the Les Pruliers and the Porrets, the fruit perhaps a little subdued by some reduction. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, quite fleshy with more red fruit than black. The backbone feels less strong here and as such I suspect this will be more approachable than its siblings.

Healthy dark red. Slightly medicinal aromas of black cherry and chocolate are complicated by a whiff of animal fur. Plush and fine-grained, offering lovely pliancy to the flavors of dark berries, chocolate and tobacco; plumper than the Les Saint-Georges but without that wine's definition and cut. The very rich tannins coat the front teeth but this very ripe wine is already quite expressive.

A brooding nose only reluctantly reveals notes of ripe and ultra-fresh dark currant, earth and a smoked game nuance. There is outstanding density to the powerful, robust and bold big-bodied flavors that possess seriously good concentration where the sap does a good job of buffering the very firm tannic spine shaping the superbly persistent finish. This is textbook Vaucrains and as such, it's going to need extended cellaring.

As is usually the case, this possesses the spiciest nose in the range and in 2017 is almost Vosne-like with its notes of plum, violet, pomegranate, sandalwood and Asian-style tea. It is also the most refined wine in the range as the vibrant medium weight flavors exude evident minerality on the chalky, lingering and well-balanced finale. If this can add depth with bottle age, it should merit the upper end of my range

The 2015 Clos Saint Denis Grand Cru includes 55% whole bunch fruit with 50% new oak. It has a composed bouquet with fine delineation, crushed rose petal and cold wet limestone permeating through the black and red fruit. It conveys the imperious personality I like from my Clos Saint-Denis. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, black fruit stained with orange rind and white pepper, conveying the structure and slight aloofness I appreciate in young Clos Saint-Denis, reassuring that this will age over 15-20 years. This is lip-smackingly delicious and just utterly superb.

Wood toast and a top note of menthol presently compete somewhat with the wonderfully fresh, elegant and complex nose of cool red currant, spice and an abundance of floral nuances. I very much like the mouth feel of the intense and sleekly muscular flavors that possess excellent drive that also characterizes the subtly stony, balanced and strikingly persistent finish. The underlying material appears to be present such that this should eat its wood and overall this is very classy juice.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential.
