Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago. Such fragrant red berry fruit leaping out of the nose, with strawberries and fresh raspberries mingling with cinnamon stick and flowers, Bright, fruity and well-framed, with a medium body and delicious finish. If you’ve ever wondered what minerality in red Burgundy tastes like, here is a daringly mineral wine that’s like stepping to the edge of a precipice, then looking over the edge. So much energy on the tightly focused and highly structured palate, the crushed-stone finish dragging you along with it. Very saline right at the end. Drink or hold.

An exceptionally cool and restrained nose grudgingly offers up its array of dark berries, earth and humus. The delicious, intense and intensely mineral-driven middle weight flavors possess both good richness and precision while displaying outstanding length for a villages-level Fixin. One to also consider. Drink to 2028+.

Bold blackberry fruit with touches of damson plums, red berries and smoke lead you into the ample palate, where the full, healthy tannins are married to intense wet-earth and black-tea character. Imposing finish that has been beautifully crafted, everything fitting together seamlessly. Drink or hold.

This is earthier still with a more sauvage character to the mostly dark berry scented nose. The rich and relatively full-bodied flavors are notably less mineral-driven, but they are a bit more expansive and powerful on the moderately austere, compact and built-to-age finale. This is a quality Gevrey villages and worth your interest. Drink to 2028+.

Deep dark red black colour with a dark red hue. Very expressive nose with aromas of dark to black cherries, violets, dried clove and hints of anise blooming out of the glass. Some forest floor and spicy cedar notes also chime in. Rich dark to black cherry and wild strawberry fruits power across the palate with some anise, clove, forest floor and spicy cedar elements lying underneath. Slightly grainy in its feel with relatively polished tannins for Pommard. Concludes long, deeply fruited and expansive.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Plenty of fresh plum, black cherry and a touch of blood orange on the nose of this very satisfying Pommard. Stacks of healthy tannins are already beautifully integrated in the fullish body. In spite of the considerable power, this has a remarkably elegant finish for this appellation. Drink or hold.

Once again there is a coolness to the markedly restrained aromas of airy red and dark pinot fruit, pungent earth and smoke. The middle weight flavors are not as dense or voluminous, but they are definitely stonier and particularly so on the linear and borderline strict finish. This youthfully austere effort is a bit awkward today, but it appears to have the stuffing to fill out in time and my projected range confers the benefit of the doubt in this regard. Drink to 2028+.

Clos du Roy is the northern most lieu-dit of Marsannay, and the relatively steep south-east facing vineyard sits above the town of Chenove. Soils here are light red with an element of sand, sitting atop a bedrock of hard limestone. Wines from Clos du Roy can be more elegant, aromatic, and approachable.

Quite closed, with a cool nose of raspberry, redcurrant and lemon zest, this has an imposing tannin structure and excellent concentration. Although only a lieut-dit (an unclassified vineyard site), this has what we expect from top 1er Cru sites and has clearly been built for the long term. So much spice and a touch of coffee bean at the very long, precisely balanced finish. Drink or hold.

Ripe and agreeably fresh aromas include those of poached plum, dark currant and pretty spice nuances. Les Longeroies is a relatively large vineyard located in the north of the Marsannay sector on the border with Chenove. The upper part of the vineyard has large amounts of limestone just below the surface, while the lower section has more red marl. Les Longeroies is one of the prime candidates to be promoted to premier cru status, and the wines from here are incredibly refined, yet also serious and well structured.

Looking for a great red Burgundy and not afraid of little-known vineyard names? Here it is! Mind-blowing nose of red fruit with a touch of red-rose and subtle, spicy notes. La Charme aux Pretres is situated in middle of the Marsannay sector, and soils here are a reddish brown gravel over a bed of limestone. This high limestone content tends to produce an open knit wine with great structure and impressive ageing potential.

Liqueur-like aromas consist of red cherry, black raspberry and violet. A hauntingly dark fragrance that makes me think of Beaudelaire’s cycle of poems, Les Fleurs du Mal (flowers of evil). The major structure is wrapped in the ripest blue and black-fruit aromas. The super-fine tannins drive the very exciting, long and focused finish. Drink or hold.

Not many 2020 Grand Cru red Burgundies match this! Like staring into a deep dark pool, except that the pool is full of forest berries and, with every swirl of the glass, you see deeper into it, yet never reach the bottom. The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Village is also showing nicely, mingling aromas of peonies, rose petals, orange rind, cassis, cherries and forest floor. Aromas of raspberries, cassis, rose petals and coniferous forest floor introduce the 2019 Fixin Le Rozier, a medium to full-bodied, bright and perfumed wine that's fine-boned and mineral, with elegantly chalky tannins and tangy acids. It's a lovely example of the appellation.

Wafting from the glass with scents of sweet berries, citrus rind, warm spices, potpourri and dark chocolate, the 2019 Marsannay Au Champ Salomon is medium to full-bodied, layered and precise, with a beautiful core of fruit and real energy and cut. Along with Favières, Champ Salomon produces the domaine's most age-worthy wine, and this is a beautiful rendition in the making that will reward extended cellaring—as a 1978 Bourgogne Marsannay, produced from this site and still in its absolute prime, recently demonstrated.

This is the first wine to display any appreciable reduction and in this case it's enough to push the underlying fruit to the background save for a note of herbal tea. Their holding has now grown to around 14 hectares that captures some of the best parcels in Marsannay. Their son Cyril joined his father in 2000, and is now in charge of both vineyard and winemaking activities for the Domaine. Cyril is increasingly focused on vineyard health, to deliver wines with pure varietal expression and a sense of place. They are among the most serious wines from the area, and while juicy and approachable young, have the capacity to age gracefully for many years.

Les Favieres is situated on the border of the Marsannay and Couchey sectors, and the vineyard has a very shallow top soil above the bedrock. It tends to produce wines that are very precise, structured, and built to age.
Deep dark red heart with black toned sides and a bright red to dark red hue. Engulfing the nostrils are expressive aromatics of dark to black cherry infused with violets, winter strawberries, vanillin cedar, forest floor and spicy garden herb notes. Exceptionally concentrated, fresh and richly flavoured, a chorus of red to dark cherry and ripe strawberry fruits expand across the palate like a peacocks tail. Incredibly supple and silky with notions of vanillin cedar, delicate forest floor, infusions of fresh herbs and sliding underneath the fruit. Velvet smooth tannins showing outstanding power right through to the very long and fleshy finish.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

What a discovery! The incredibly subtle red-fruit, orange and floral nose of this red Burgundy reminds me of Musigny Grand Cru, but the wine is from Marsannay, where there isn’t a single 1er Cru, never mind a Grand Cru! As much finesse as concentration on the extremely precise palate, where the fine tannins are already beautifully integrated. Breathtakingly long and intense finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.

The 2019 Marsannay Les Favières is a brilliant wine in the making, unwinding in the glass with aromas of plums, cassis and cherries mingled with hints of violets, peonies, dark chocolate and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with lively acids and powdery tannins, it's a layered, elegantly structured wine built for the long haul. If readers can find a better value age-worthy red Burgundy from the northern Côte de Nuits, I'd love to know about it.

Relatively prominent herbal tea nuances are present on the super-fresh, cool and pure aromas of essence of red pinot fruit, earth and anise wisps. The wonderfully textured middle weight flavors brim with minerality while offering outstanding volume to the impressively persistent if youthfully austere finish. This powerful and serious effort is excellent and should age accordingly. Drink 2029+.

Excellent depth of colour featuring a dark red black shaded core and a dark red hue. Captivating aromas of red to dark cherries, violets and ripe wild strawberries intoxicate the senses with elements of forest floor, spicy vanillin cedar and Provincial herbs adding further interest. Light and elegant yet simultaneously rich and understated in its power, the palate is supplely caressed with a mix of red to dark cherry and wild strawberry fruits. Vanillin cedar, infusions of provincial herbs, light forest floor and spice lie beneath the delicious layers of fruit. Beautifully proportioned in the mouth with silky tannins and ample freshness it finishes with exceptional persistence, depth and flesh.

An attractively spicy nose combines notes of both red and dark berries with those of earth and a hint of humus character. There is once again a very generous mouthfeel to the medium-bodied flavors that still manage to be nicely precise on the more complex and slightly firmer finale. This is really quite good and worth considering. Drink 2026+.

Perfumed like aromatics captivate the olfactory senses with violet, red to dark cherry, red currant and strawberry scents followed by spicy vanillin cedar, fresh herbs and forest floor. Rich yet light to medium weight and supple across the palate, a power wave of moreish dark cherry, strawberry and ripe red currant fruits flood the mouth. Dark red in colour with black tinged edges and a bright dark red hue. The nose emits fragrant red fruited scents of cherry and strawberry with a whiff of sour cherry thrown in for good measure. Finding true value in Burgundy is an increasingly rare commodity, despite the seemingly never ending search by consumers and importers alike. Of course it's easy to point to lesser known communes and we're done, but it's not always so straight forward as the wines rarely deliver the desired result. One commune however that has continued to excel is Marsannay in the north of the Cote d'Or, where a small group of growers are producing outstanding wines from this forgotten corner of Burgundy. Leading the charge is Domaine Charles Audoin, now run by the passionate and energetic fifth-generation vigneron, Cyril Audoin.

"Audoin continues to belong on any short list of the Côte de Nuits' finest values, and savvy consumers are advised to take note."
    - William Kelley, Wine Advocate

Domaine Charles Audoin was formed in 1972 by Charles and his oenologist wife Marie-Francoise, starting with three hectares in Marsannay. Their holding has now grown to around 14 hectares that captures some of the best parcels in Marsannay. Cyril is increasingly focused on vineyard health, to deliver wines with pure varietal expression and a sense of place. They are among the most serious wines from the area, and while juicy and approachable young, have the capacity to age gracefully for many years.

Across the range there is a clear intent to showcase the various climats of Marsannay, as the six single vineyard wines each display a unique profile. In the north of the appellation are the Longeroies and Clos du Roy vineyards where the soils are lighter and produce softer, easier, and more forward wine styles. Further south the soils are deeper and give the wines from Clos de Jeu, Champ Salomon, and Favieres greater structure and a more compact style. Charme aux Pretres is a reddish brown gravel soil over a bed of limestone, and tends to produce an open knit wine with great structure. Many of these vineyards are destined to be reclassified premier cru status in the upcoming review.

Situated in the southern part of Marsannay, Au Champ Salomon is one of the premier vineyards in this Couchey sector. The vineyard is well placed on the mid-slope, and produces wines that combine power and elegance, and a propensity to age extremely well.

Deep dark red black tinged colour with a bright red hue. Very perfumed, the nose offers up a delightful bouquet of violets, strawberries and ripe red to dark cherries along with hints of anise, fresh herbs, light forest floor and subtle spicy cedar notes. Light, vibrant and supplely textured, the highly savoury palate is layered with spicy red to dark cherry and strawberry fruits which meld into elements of anise, forest floor and delicate spicy cedar. Excellent drive and freshness with velvety tannins and a long moreish aftertaste.

Wafting from the glass with lovely aromas of cherries, wild berries, peonies and orange rind, the 2018 Marsannay Clos du Roy is medium to full-bodied, rich and enveloping, with a fleshy core of fruit, succulent acids and good depth at the core. A touch richer and headier than the 2017 rendition, this is a gourmand Marsannay from Audoin.

There is a liqueur-like character to the red cherry, spice and softly earth-scented nose. The supple, round and relatively forward flavors possess both good density and sappy texture, all wrapped in a bright and mildly tangy finish that really firms up as it sits on the palate. This is good but it's not at the level of the best here.

Domaine Charles Audoin was formed in 1972 by Charles and his oenologist wife Marie-Francoise, starting with three hectares in Marsannay. Their holding has now grown to around 14 hectares that captures some of the best parcels in Marsannay. Their son Cyril joined his father in 2000, and is now in charge of both vineyard and winemaking activities for the Domaine. Cyril is increasingly focused on vineyard health, to deliver wines with pure varietal expression and a sense of place. A very ripe, indeed slightly jammy nose is composed by notes of cassis and black cherry. The ripeness continues onto the velvety and suave flavors that possess a seductive mouthfeel before concluding in a lingering finish. This isn't typical but it's impressive nonetheless.

Les Favieres is situated on the border of the Marsannay and Couchey sectors, and the vineyard has a very shallow top soil above the bedrock. It tends to produce wines that are very precise, structured, and built to age.

Deep dark red colour with black tinged edges and a bright dark red hue. Pronounced red cherry and red currant aromas mix with some meaty notes, an earthy forest floor like character, stalky herbs and spicy cedar. Delicious ripe red cherry and red currant fruits have a distinct earthy overtone with some meatiness, infusions of fresh herbs and spicy cedar ensuing. Excellent fruit intensity is complimented by crunchy like acidity and structured, slightly grainy tannins. Finishes with a long savoury aftertaste that has a meaty feel to it.

The 2018 Marsannay Les Favières opens in the glass with aromas of cherries, raspberries and orange rind that mingle with sweet soil tones and a deft touch of toasty new oak. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with rich structuring tannins, lively acids and a long, precise finish. As usual, this is among the most promising prospects for the long haul in the Audoin cellar.

There is better freshness still to the pretty and attractively layered aromas of red cherry, raspberry and evident floral elements. The punchy and appealingly textured flavors exude evident salinity on the impressively complex and lingering finish where the same cherry lozenge character is present.

Across the range there is a clear intent to showcase the various climats of Marsanny, as the six single vineyard wines each display a unique profile.

This pack contains one bottle each of Domaine Audoin's 2015 single vineyard Marsannay wines; Clos du Roy, Les Longeroies, La Charme Aux Pretres, and Clos De Jeu. Many of Charles Audoin wines are destined to age well for many years, and this pack will give a good indication of this trajectory.

2015 Domaine Charles Audoin Marsannay Clos du Roy
The 2015 Marsannay Clos du Roy is superb, unfurling in the glass with a youthful bouquet of ripe cherries, currants and incipient forest floor. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and pure, with lovely depth and concentration, framed by fine, chalky tannins which assert themselves with light grip on the finish. This merits some time in the cellar, but it's an absolutely stellar Marsannay.

A discreet application of wood serves as a relatively subtle backdrop for the fresh, cool and ripe aromas of both red and dark currant, earth and soft floral nuances. I like the sense of underlying tension and punch to the mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors that deliver fine length on the saline-inflected, clean and focused finale.

2015 Domaine Charles Audoin Marsannay La Charme Aux Pretres
This is the first wine in the range to reflect any appreciable amount of reduction but it's enough to push the underlying fruit and wood scents to the background. Otherwise there is excellent detail and intensity to the concentrated and mouth coating medium-bodied flavors that terminate in an exceptionally rich finish that delivers sneaky good length. Again, moderate patience will be necessary.

There is an exotic tea element to the spicy black cherry and smoked meat-scented nose. The rich, vibrant and suave middle weight flavors exude a fine bead of minerality onto the dusty, textured and beautifully long finish. This well-balanced effort is built-to-reward mid-term cellaring and will need at least a few years first.

The terroir of Marsannay is based on the same complex Jurassic limestone-based geology that runs the entire length of the Côte d’Or. The Collottes have been grape growers in Marsannay for four generations, but it wasn’t until 1981 that a young, 16 year-old Philippe Collotte bottled the first wine under the name of Domaine Collotte. He subsequently purchased some mature vineyards of about 40 years of age in both Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny, to further expand the domaine’s repertoire. In 2013 Philippe was joined by his daughter Isabelle, who had just completed her viticulture and oenology studies at the Lycée Viticole de Beaune.
Made from Pinot Noir. Translucent rosy pink in colour. A bouquet of pomegranate, strawberries and cranberries sail out of the glass trailed by some musk and spice. On the palate there’s a fruity berry sweetness to the well rounded flavours of pomegranate, strawberries and raspberries which are delivered with wonderful intensity. Notions of musk and a subtle stoniness linger beneath the fruit. Finishes dry with brisk, balanced acidity and a long delicious aftertaste filled with ripe berry fruits.

Today Domaine Collotte farms 17ha of vines (16ha currently in production) in Marsannay, Fixin, Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny.

Domaine Comte Armand is one of the most respected names in Burgundy, with a rich history deeply rooted in the village of Pommard. At the heart of their holdings is the legendary Pommard Premier Cru Clos des Epeneaux, a walled monopole vineyard that has become synonymous with the domaine itself.

What sets Clos des Epeneaux apart is its remarkable ability to balance Pommard's natural power with a sense of elegance and finesse. The vineyard's old vines, some over 80 years of age, yield wines of depth and complexity, yet with a vibrancy that makes them captivating even in their youth. With age, these wines evolve beautifully, revealing layers of dark fruit, earth, and subtle spice.

A very ripe nose is comprised by notes of both red and dark currant along with a background hint of a kind of reduction that the Burgundians refer to as bourgeon de cassis. There is fine freshness and verve to the moderately dense, powerful, and muscular larger-scaled flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract before concluding in a dusty, austere, and firm finale. This is also relatively supple and opulent that will need to develop depth over the course of its aging curve. Drink 2029+.

The 2019 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru was bottled in June and July ‘21. Very perfumed and floral scents on the nose, dark cherries, bergamot, damp earth and touches of clove, later hints of violet and blood orange (traits that I observed out of barrel). This is nicely detailed. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins, fine acidity, lightly spiced with a classy espresso-tinged finish that lingers in the mouth. Excellent. Drink 2025-2050.

The colour has evolved more than the 2018. Interesting complex nose, a mix of the warmer pinot style, riper and more supple than the 2018, you could almost consider drinking this until you come to the end of the palate where the density builds. A light menthol touch with some cinnamon. Enough acidity at the back, tannins hidden by the fruit, almost saline at the finish. Ultimately more character than the ’18 though with a slightly riper fruit profile.

Initially there is enough reduction present to remark upon but it slowly gives way to the still super-fresh and very primary aromas of various red berries, spice and discreet floral nuances. There is both fine richness and density to the vibrant full-bodied flavors that possess a really lovely mouth feel thanks to the abundance of dry extract, all wrapped in gorgeously persistent and well-balanced finale. This is very much built-to-age and is clearly going to need it but it should be wonderful when it finally reaches its apogee. Try from 2025+.

The 2010 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux could be Leroux’s finest so far. It has a convincing, elegant bouquet that at this early juncture bears semblances to the 2008, but ramps up the intensity without compensating on delineation, with subtle notes of spice and balsam coming through. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet, candied entry. This is very pure, soft and caressing in the mouth but around the sides you can feel the tannins gently exerting their grip. Comte Armand’s 2010 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux kicks off the tasting in grand style. What can I say? The 2010 is a great example of the year. Layers of generous fruit are buffered by underlying veins of acidity and minerality in a wine that is already virtually impossible to resist. This is a fabulous showing from a wine that consistently overdelivers. Already, the room is buzzing. Drink 2017-2035.

This was my first bottle from the case, but it is a wine I have enjoyed elsewhere twice recently, and this bottle was right up to scratch. It is only 10 years old which is not much for a great Pommard, but it is beautifully accessible and delivers so much already. The colour is not especially deep for Pommard, but it fills the glass pleasingly. From the first sniff you know that this has been beautifully made. I do think that it was the best wine that Benjamin Leroux made here during his 14 year tenure at the domaine. It seems effortless while offering so many layers of predominantly red fruits with the occasional darker note. It has the structure you would hope for, but the tannins are muscles hidden below the skin. We were very sad to finish the bottle. Tasted: May 2020

An all but invisible whiff of wood easily allows the earthy yet quite pretty and cool aromas of plum, violet, dark cherry and soft spice nuances to shine. The mouthfeel of the slightly bigger and richer flavors is also admirably sleek while delivering excellent length on the mouthcoating and well-balanced if presently linear finish. While I wouldn't describe the 2016 Clos as racy, there is good energy and outstanding power as the low yields really show. This is superb though definitely a wine that will benefit from extended keeping. Drink through 2036+.

The 2016 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux contains 10% whole-bunch fruit. I tasted from two cuvées, one from the young vines and one from the old. The young vines has clean and pure black cherry, red plum and lightly blueberry fruit that conveys a sense of energy. The palate is well balanced with succulent ripe black fruit, very fine tannin, a taut line of acidity but real complexity and tension from start to finish. I love the harmony and effortlessness of these younger vines. The cuvée from older vines demonstrated more black fruit with traces of undergrowth, a little more rondeur with impressive depth and structure on the persistent, marine/oyster shell-tinged finish. This has enormous potential and may challenge the supremacy of the 2015. Drink 2020 - 2040.

(I tasted the younger- and older-vine components of this wine, followed by the press wine and an approximation of the final blend, which will be bottled with about 13.5% alcohol): Sample from the younger vines (45% of the blend; vinified with 15% whole clusters): Good dark red. Slightly medicinal aromas of red cherry and licorice. Surprisingly dry and backward, with its cherry fruit complicated by pungent licorice and herb notes. Finishes rather suave if a bit tart, with lingering notes of bitter cherry and herbs. Sample from the old vines (45% of the blend; from vines 67 to 93 years of age): Bright, dark red. Distinctly darker and riper on the nose than the younger vines, offering aromas of blueberry, black raspberry and spices. A step up in volume as well, with its dark raspberry and licorice flavors complicated by a licorice note. Very firmly structured wine with a longer, more tactile finish. From the press wine (to comprise about 10% of the blend): Softer, fatter and slightly saline. Finishes a bit tart but this juice should fill in the middle of the blend. An approximation of the final blend: Healthy dark red. Slight medicinal cast to the aromas of cherry, redcurrant and menthol. By far the best and most complete of these samples, offering serious low-yield richness but also terrific definition and energy. This sample somehow displayed captivating violet and mineral notes that were not apparent in any of its components. Lovely depth and restrained sweetness here. Finishes taut and long, with saline and herbal nuances and terrific underlying structure. This reminded me of a 2010; interestingly, last year Zinetti described his young '15 as like a denser version of 2010.

This is the last vineyard to be picked as the cool site of Les Porlottes, which is behind the village to the north, stays fresh. The small amount of grapes which they have from their tiny holdings in Baudes and Fuées are then added. Very rich heady purple and the nose too is super-ripe. Too much of a good thing? Flamboyant peonies and lush loganberries. Some acidity, more oak than I would expect adding cream to the rich summer pudding fruit.

The wine has a youthful exuberance that is highly engaging, with a pure, ripe cassis fruit and profuse floral notes. The texture is fresh, lively and energetic, without any lack of substance. An impressive wine, well above the norm for this level. Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé blends grapes from the mid-slope lieu-dit Les Porlottes along with some young-vine material from Les Fuées and Les Baudes. As with the other wines in the cellar, the grapes are destemmed and given a cold soak prior to fermentation on native yeasts and ageing in cask (15% new). Drink 2023 - 2060.

As is often the case, this is aromatically similar to the Chambolle 1er but it's less expressive and perhaps more densely fruited. There is notably better mid-palate concentration to the substantially sized big-bodied flavors that also possess a positively gorgeous mouthfeel while exuding an abundance of mineral character on the hugely long and impeccably well-balanced and youthfully austere finale. This Zen-like effort is superb and a wine that should also age gracefully over the next two decades. Drink from 2040+.

Black colour with a purple rim. The fresh mulberry nose is reminiscent of the initial Chambolle wine, on the cusp of being too flamboyant. Behind this though I can find the quintessential intensity of Musigny, which becomes notably fresher at the back. This will work. You could spread the fruit with a knife, but everything is so intense that there is less detail than is usual at this stage. There may yet prove to be further upside to this wine.

The mature vines in the domaine’s immense holding (5.56ha of old vines) have given us a wine with the youthful, plummy exuberance of Chambolle but with added precision and depth, revealing saline mineral notes, plus hints of flowers and spice. On the palate, the silky texture initially beguiles, and with time the firm structure and long finish become evident. Ageing in 35% new casks helps the wine retain an admirable purity of fruit. The 2020 vintage was the last vinified by François Millet, who took his retirement at a high point in his career. Drink 2025 - 2060.

This too is quite aromatically restrained though aggressive swirling does eventually coax the pure and elegant aromas to emerge and when they do, they are almost a hypothetical blend of the Amoureuses and the Bonnes Mares. The concentrated, powerful and decidedly muscular flavors retain plenty of refinement and minerality that conclude in a wonderfully complex and superbly long finale. The mid-palate texture is akin to rolling rocks around in the mouth and the finish just goes on and on. This too is brilliant, and the word Zen definitely comes to mind. Drink 2039+.

Very intense black purple, the bouquet has gone to sleep as the cellar cools down for winter. Then, put the wine in your mouth and this really is majestic. Some fruit starts slowly to emerge on the nose too, very deep red purple, roses in full bloom, ripe but perfectly balanced, a juiciness and a mineral thread together, quintessence of strawberry but so much else besides. Many delicate waves of flavour which push on to an exceptionally persistent finish. Experience suggests that the wine may go to sleep for quite a few years after bottling, but at this point it is a brilliant example of one of Burgundy’s greatest vineyards.

A riper and more restrained nose requires some swirling to reveal its aromas of plum liqueur, blue berry, cassis, earth and a more restricted range of spice elements. The bigger and richer flavors possess an opulent richness and a velvety texture that coats the palate and enrobes the firmer tannic spine shaping the powerful, tautly muscular and strikingly persistent finale. This too possesses superb development potential though patience definitely advised. Drink 2034+.

Black centre with a purple rim. The Bonnes Mares offers a denser, darker and more sombre nose coming after the explosive Amoureuses. Altogether a firmer framework, then a hugely intense coulis of blackcurrant, nothing cooked and there is good acidity behind. Myrtilles adds François. Intense more than magisterial. Not quite so persistent as the Amoureuses.

A wonderfully fresh and cool nose reflects aromas of plum, violet and lovely spice wisps. There is fine mid-palate density to the appealingly textured middle weight flavors that exude evident minerality on the refreshing, focused and well-balanced finale where a touch of austerity slowly appears. A Chambolle villages of finesse and grace that should mature slowly over the next decade. Drink 2029+.

Dense black centre to this. Dark plums, very intense, not cooked, though also very plummy on the palate, in that sense atypical. Good acidity and avoids the dry. Had to be light on extraction and still all this comes out. I like the finish.

A fresh if slightly jammy nose speaks of cassis, red and dark cherry and lovely spice wisps. The sleek but succulent medium-bodied flavors retain a lovely sense of underlying tension to the saline-inflected if decidedly firm finish that exhibits excellent length. This is definitely a structured and youthfully austere Chambolle villages that's going to require at least some patience as it's quite compact today.

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Village has a lovely black cherry and boysenberry scented, quite floral in style, with hints of wet limestone in the background. The palate is fresh on the entry, delivering vibrant black fruit infused with orange zest and hints of cassis. Opulent in style, but counterbalanced by the tension and especially the nervosité on the finish. Excellent.

This comes mostly from Les Porlottes with the addition of two small plots (0.15ha each) of 1ers crus Les Baudes and Les Fuées. Black centre with purple rim, a feeling of freshness. I expected black fruit to follow on the palate but it is more in a ripe raspberry and deep cherry, with the latter giving the feeling of freshness. It is exceptionally concentrated and the tannins will take a little longer in barrel to soften.

A highly expressive and ultra-elegant nose flashes a strikingly pretty array of spice and floral elements on the dark raspberry and cassis-suffused aromas. The graceful and lilting middle weight flavors also possess a really lovely sense of underlying tension that adds lift to the chiseled, stony and sneaky long finish. This too should be approachable after 6 to 8 years but amply reward 15+.

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru has a bewitching bouquet of ample black cherry, blueberry and violet aromas, a quintessential Amoureuses defined by its purity and controlled opulence. The palate is, again, extremely pure and caressing, offering sorbet-like freshness and palpable energy, and delivering a crescendo of flavor as it fans out on the finish with blueberry, cassis, crushed stone and blood orange notes. Fabulous.

Black in colour again with thin purple band at the rim. François Millet wanted to do the tasting with black glasses so as to prevent tasters being put off by the depth of the colours in 2018! Inky depths here, much more black fruit. At the moment this somewhat hides the usual opulent magic of Les Amoureuses. There are black plums and blackberry juice instead, and a heavyweight finish. But ask again in 20 years when my conservative score may look foolish.

A ripe and super-fresh nose offers up notes of black raspberry, plum liqueur, Asian-style tea and a whiff of incense. The racy, intense and mineral-driven big-bodied flavors retain outstanding delineation as well as an abundance of palate soaking dry extract before delivering stunningly good length where an interesting hint of citrus character in the form of mandarin orange appears. This incredibly powerful effort is both classy and highly complex and like the Bonnes Mares, is a wine that will live for decades. With that said, it's not so backward and compact to preclude it being approachable after only 10 to 12 years. A knockout by any standard.

The 2018 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is even darker than the Bonnes-Mares. It has a spectacular bouquet of intense black fruit, blueberries and shucked oyster shells, the mineralité heightened over the Bonnes-Mares and lending a great deal of precision. The palate is medium-bodied with blueberry, boysenberry and black currant fruit, extraordinary tension, razor-sharp acidity and a dash of white pepper on the crystalline finish. One of the finest Musignys I have tasted from barrel at de Vogüé.

This is almost always the domaine's best 1er and so it appears to be again in 2015 with its ultra-floral and spicy nose of red currant and softly exotic Asian-style tea aromas. There is a wonderfully refined and seductive mouth feel to the delicious and vibrant medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with abundant dry extract, all wrapped in a hugely long finish that is shaped by dense by fine tannins. This is a first-rate Suchots though one that is expressly built-to-age. Drink 2027+.

Dark red-ruby. Incredible nose melds black raspberry, licorice, Asian spices, minerals and cocoa powder. Densely packed and powerfully structured but the wine's finesse of texture ensures a magical light touch. Pungent minerality and floral character give the middle palate rare energy for the vintage, belying the wine's 3.75 pH. Finishes savory and extremely long, with late-arriving tannins saturating the sides of the teeth. I find this a bit tighter today than the 2016 version, and indeed Confuron says the tannins here are a bit less ripe. But he's splitting hairs. Offers a compelling combination of sensuality and power. Drink 2026-2042.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential.
