Domaine Charles Audoin was formed in 1972 by Charles and his oenologist wife Marie-Francoise, starting with three hectares in Marsannay. Their holding has now grown to around 14 hectares that captures some of the best parcels in Marsannay. Their son Cyril joined his father in 2000, and is now in charge of both vineyard and winemaking activities for the Domaine. Cyril is increasingly focused on vineyard health, to deliver wines with pure varietal expression and a sense of place. They are among the most serious wines from the area, and while juicy and approachable young, have the capacity to age gracefully for many years.

Les Favieres is situated on the border of the Marsannay and Couchey sectors, and the vineyard has a very shallow top soil above the bedrock. It tends to produce wines that are very precise, structured, and built to age.
Deep dark red heart with black toned sides and a bright red to dark red hue. Engulfing the nostrils are expressive aromatics of dark to black cherry infused with violets, winter strawberries, vanillin cedar, forest floor and spicy garden herb notes. Exceptionally concentrated, fresh and richly flavoured, a chorus of red to dark cherry and ripe strawberry fruits expand across the palate like a peacocks tail. Incredibly supple and silky with notions of vanillin cedar, delicate forest floor, infusions of fresh herbs and sliding underneath the fruit. Velvet smooth tannins showing outstanding power right through to the very long and fleshy finish.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

What a discovery! The incredibly subtle red-fruit, orange and floral nose of this red Burgundy reminds me of Musigny Grand Cru, but the wine is from Marsannay, where there isn’t a single 1er Cru, never mind a Grand Cru! As much finesse as concentration on the extremely precise palate, where the fine tannins are already beautifully integrated. Breathtakingly long and intense finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.

The 2019 Marsannay Les Favières is a brilliant wine in the making, unwinding in the glass with aromas of plums, cassis and cherries mingled with hints of violets, peonies, dark chocolate and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with lively acids and powdery tannins, it's a layered, elegantly structured wine built for the long haul. If readers can find a better value age-worthy red Burgundy from the northern Côte de Nuits, I'd love to know about it.

Relatively prominent herbal tea nuances are present on the super-fresh, cool and pure aromas of essence of red pinot fruit, earth and anise wisps. The wonderfully textured middle weight flavors brim with minerality while offering outstanding volume to the impressively persistent if youthfully austere finish. This powerful and serious effort is excellent and should age accordingly. Drink 2029+.
