Southern Rhone

Considered one of the bargain categories in European wine, the wave of enthusiasm for Cotes du Rhone styles continues to grow. This vast region offers delicious Grenache-based reds, often blended with Cinsault, Shiraz & Mourvedre that are densely coloured, fleshy, supple and flavourful. Entry level wines make for delightful early drinking, while the very best examples can be exceptionally long-lived. Focusing on small grower-producers, Nicks Wine Merchants directly import some tremendous values from Rasteau, Cairanne, Valreas, Gigondas, Lirac and Chateauneuf du Pape, amongst others. Rhone Rose and dry white wines are also frequently stocked.

Rich, opulent and powerful, this is a real hedonists Chateauneuf du Pape.

Sourced from very old Grenache vines located on La Crau with maturation taking place in 1 year old Burgundy demi muids. Very deep dark red core with black tinged edges and a bright red hue. Lifted aromatics of black raspberries, liquorice and ripe black cherries meld into elements of scorched earth, dried herbs and spice. Hedonistically rich and opulent in its mouthfeel the palate is swamped with ripe black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry flavours over notions of scorched earth, infusions of incense and spicy dried herbs. Silky smooth yet structured tannins. Very impressive power and concentration finishing with a very long spicy black raspberry, black cherry, liquorice, scorched earth and peppery dried herb aftertaste.
    Cellar 5-6 years.

Lastly, the 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Adrastée is one of the gems in the vintage. Made from 100% Grenache that was completely destemmed and brought up all in larger barrels, it has classic Grenache notes of kirsch, blackberries, crushed rocks and dried garrigue. Tight, full-bodied and backward on the palate, with plenty of tannins, it has a terrific core of sweet fruit and a great finish. It should be at its best from 2020-2032.

Based in a small village on the northern right bank of the Rhone, the Chave family have been growing vines on the famous Hermitage hill since 1481. Gerard Chave took over from his father in 1970 and rapidly achieved megastar status, he has since passed on the winemaking responsibilities to his son Jean-Louis. Famed for their iconic Hermitage, this offshoot negociant project sources fruit from selected growers around Cotes du Rhone.
Dense inky black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. To the fore are pronounced aromas of black cherry and liquorice which are trailed by some black raspberry, scorched earth, smoked meat and peppered herb notes. Rich and voluptuously textured, the weighty palate is drenched with black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits which engulf every corner of the mouth. Scorched earth, dried meat, peppered herb and subtle leather elements lurk underneath. Ripe chewy tannins lend structure. Exceptionally deep and powerful it finishes long and decadent.

Shimmering ruby color. Lively red and blue fruit and floral aromas are sharpened by a spicy suggestion of white pepper. Juicy and broad on the palate, offering appealingly sweet black raspberry and boysenberry flavors that become firmer on the back half. Supple, even tannins shape the finely etched, clinging finish, which leaves a suave floral note behind. Drink 2022-2027.

André Brunel has always been one of the benchmark vignerons of Châteauneuf du Pape, his Les Cailloux cuvee made from a blend of 70% Grenache, 17% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah and 3% Cinsault with vines on average 60 years old. Almost all of the vinifications and aging are done in concrete for a period of 18 months with the exception of the Syrah which gets aged in older oak.
Very deep dark red heart with black shaded edges and a dark red hue. Wafting from the glass are black raspberry, liquorice and dark to black cherry aromas followed by scorched earth, herbs du Provence and peppered meat notes. Engulfing the mouth are rich, seductive black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits which whilst full in body are far from overweight. Infusions of earthy incense like characters, herbs du Provence and spicy pepper lend further nuance. Velvet smooth tannins carry a slightly chewy under carriage. Powerful yet relatively refined it concludes long, succulent and spicy.

This traditional style Chateauneuf has a complex nose of leather, dry earth, candied orange peel and licorice. More red-berry fruit on the expansive yet delicate palate, where there’s a wonderful interplay of super-fine tannins and restrained richness through the very long, silky finish. Drink or hold.

At the top end of Chapoutier's Southern Rhône hierarchy are the two sélections parcellaires from Châteauneuf du Pape. I had a slight preference for the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Croix de Bois, which comes from the Bédarrides (eastern) side of the appellation, a site with galets roulés over clay, which Chapoutier says resists drought. This is a full-bodied, dense, plummy wine, but it retains ample freshness and offers loads of spicy complexity, including exotic notes like cumin and coriander that linger enticingly on the finish. Drink 2017-2030.

The 2015 Châteauneuf-Du-Pape Croix de Bois is another single vineyard cuvée made from 100% Grenache that was completely destemmed and aged all in concrete. It's slightly deeper ruby colored than Barbe Rac and offers a more fruit-driven style. Blueberry, plums, black cherries, spring flowers and Asian spice. Building with time in the glass, ripe, voluptuous and elegant, yet also concentrated and structured, it needs 2-4 years of bottle age.

Deep, rich, voluptuous and sexy, with an incredible texture, it's a screaming value to drink over the coming decade. It's just another brilliant wine from the Roussillon team at Chapoutier. The superb 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Croix de Bois may turn out to be the finest example from this vineyard yet produced. Chapoutier’s single vineyard Chateauneuf du Papes represent two different areas of the appellation, with the Croix de Bois coming from the eastern sector in the Bedarrides region.. Chapoutier has adjusted the manner in which he ages these cuvees, as they are now completely aged in tank. The wine boasts extraordinary notes of ground pepper, lavender, sweet black currants, kirsch, and hints of tapenade as well as black raspberries. Full-bodied with flavors of grilled meat, a superb texture, sweet tannin, and a 50+-second finish, it should drink well for 20+ years. Both the Barbe Rac and Croix de Bois are 100% Grenache.

Positioned on the border between the Rhône Valley and the Languedoc, and straddling the mountainous climate of the Massif Central and the gentle Mediterranean climate of the Costieres-de-Nîmes, the AOP Duché d’Uzes is not only one of France’s newest appellations but historically one of it’s most ancient. This rugged region was the birthplace of the Volcae, an ancient Celtic confederation that at one time controlled a vast area stretching from northern Spain to Macedonia.

The Souchon family, who have farmed vineyards in this region for generations sold their fruit to a cooperative outfit for more than 80 years until 2010 when fourth generation Nicolas Souchon (who was also the assistant winemaker at Clos Saint Jean in Chateauneuf du Pape), together with the able assistance of Philippe Cambie decided to produce his own wines. ‘Mas des Volques’ Estate was created and a new winery built with fruit sourced only from the highest quality, older vineyards.

A rich, hefty Rhone that has a blockbuster finish.

Super dense inky black core with a deep dark red black hue. Intoxicating aromas of ripe black raspberries and liquorice engulf the olfactory senses with some blackberry, scorched earth and peppered herb scents also evident. Considerably sized, rich and exuberant, the opulently textured palate is saturated with a concentrate of plush black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry liqueur like flavours. Notions of blackberry, scorched earth and peppered herbs lie underneath. The ripe, chewy tannin structure largely concealed by the sheer weight of fruit. Powerful, deep and voluminous, it concludes with a long blockbuster finish. Rich and large scaled yet balanced.

An exciting new discovery hailing from the Western reaches of the Rhone Valley in the newly classified AOP Duche d’Uzes appellation. Loaded with richness and possessing a chewy textural feel, this delicious Rhone is a fantastic new find

A blend of 40% Syrah, 35% Grenache and 25% Carignan sourced from vines with an average age of 45 years. The first vintage made 100% by the young proprietor Nicolas Souchon, the 2014 Duche d'Uzes is one sexy blend of mostly Grenache (there's smaller parts Carignan and Syrah) that was raised all in concrete tanks. It offers tons of black raspberries, vanilla bean, crushed flowers and Provencal herbs in a medium to full-bodied, silky, polished, elegant package that's hard to stop drinking. It has more fruit and texture than most in the vintage and will knock it out of the park over the coming 4-5 years.

A beautifully structured Rhone possessing inky like concentration and abundant power.

Dense inky black core with a very deep dark purple black tinged hue. Flowing through the nostrils are pronounced ripe black cherry and liquorice aromatics with hints of black raspberry also chiming in over light scorched earth and spicy pepper notes. Hedonistically rich fruit is backed by ripe chewy tannins, (which give the wine a muscular feel), and the vintages hallmark vibrancy. Decadent black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry flavours completely swamp the palate with an underbelly of light scorched earth and pepper. Based on 40% Syrah, 35% Grenache and 25% Carignan, mostly destemmed and aged in 15% new French oak (just for the Syrah and Carignan) it offers a seamless, elegant profile that just glides across the palate. Violets, blue fruits, and spring flower notes all emerge from the glass and it has the depth, purity, and balance to keep for 7-8 years, although I see no need to delay gratification.

Rich, chewy and hedonistic this is a superb Southern Rhone blend from the outstanding 2015 vintage.

Produced from a blend of 40% Syrah, 35% Grenache and 25% Carignan, with the Syrah and Carignan components aged in barriques for 6 months, it has a lifted nose of black raspberries, blackberries and liquorice followed by black cherry liqueur like notes, inky graphite and spicy earth. Mont-Redon is one of Chateauneuf-du-Pape’s largest estate’s with almost 100 hectares under vine and has one of the longest histories in the entire Rhône Valley. The estate has passed through many families over the centuries, but it’s modern history really started in 1923 with the then manager, Henri Plantin. Henri was a colleague and contemporary of Baron Pierre Le Roy de Boiseaumarié, the man credited with spearheading the creation of France’s entire AOC system in 1936. It was Henri’s drive and vision that established the estate as one of the ‘Grand Crus’ in Chateauneuf du Pape. Since 2017 Mont-Redon has been managed by Pierre Fabre, Henri’s great-great-grandson who has brought with him a renewed enthusiasm for producing the very finest wines.
Mont-Redon also produce a great value Cotes du Rhone. The 2021 vintage is a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah destemmed and fermented in stainless steel with about two weeks on skins and gentle pump-overs to promote a fine tannin structure. It then sees a further 8 months maturation in tank.

Gorgeous aromatics, succulent fruit and a long finish make for a very seductive Cotes du Rhone.

Deep black dark red colour with a bright dark purple hue. Gorgeous aromatics of spicy dark raspberries and liquorice infused with Herbs du Provence show a perfumed like intensity out of the glass with notions of earthy incense and peppered meats also evident. Medium to full bodied with a juicy texture and plenty of power, dark raspberry, liquorice and dark cherry fruits engulf the mouth with infusions of Herbs du Provence, earthy incense characters and spicy pepper lying underneath. Good freshness with ripe, slightly chewy tannins, the long aftertaste layered with succulent fruit and pepper. A real surprise packet!
Drink over the next 3-4 years.

    Other Reviews.....
Ripe and generous with complex red and black fruit character plus a slew of spice, licorice and old balsamic vinegar aromas. This is an excellent Cotes-du-Rhone that's not a jot too rich. The tannins and bitter chocolate character build impressively at the long finish. Drink or hold.

Deep black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Alluring aromas of red to dark raspberries and red liquorice are trailed by some herbs du Provence, earthy incense and spice notes. A delicious mix of red to dark fruits, namely cherries, liquorice and raspberries show plenty of juicy appeal. Subtle scorched earth, infusions of incense and spice linger underneath. Finishes with good freshness, polished tannins and a deeply fruited, faintly chewy aftertaste.

Grenache: the workhorse of the Southern Rhone.

While Grenache has lost favour to Shiraz in Australia, in the Southern Rhone, Shiraz plays second fiddle. Here Grenache remains the basis for beautifully balanced, frequently exuberant reds with a strong Mediterranean influence. Apart from Grenache, twenty two other varieties are permitted throughout the entire Rhone Appellation, though generally no more than ten are employed in blends.

Rhone wine labels and the appellation system.

As in other French wine regions, the Rhone's Appellations d'Origine Controlees (AOCs) rely on sets of rules based around the concept of 'terroir' (the interaction of soil and climate on wine quality) as well as specific local and historic practises. Essentially, the whole system is organised as a pyramid. The further you climb towards the summit, the more restrictive the criteria for production, the more prestigious the terroir and the better the wines should be.

The 'Cotes du Rhone' AOC is the base of the pyramid. The second level is the 'Cotes du Rhone Villages' AOC which follows slightly different rules. Out of ninety 'communes' allowed to produce Cotes Du Rhone Villages, eighteen of them are allowed to step up the hierarchy ladder with the mention of the village name on their labels (e.g. 'Rasteau', 'Vacquerays' etc.), provided they respect the more restrictive yields as well as other analytical requirements at harvest. Finally, at the top of the pyramid, we find the local appellations, for which the term 'Crus' is the norm. Here yields generally cannot exceed 35Hls/Ha and strict conditions for cultivation apply. Chateauneuf Du Pape is one such Cru.

Chateauneuf du Pape forms the apex of the Southern Rhone's appellation pyramid. The extraordinary and long-standing reputation of its wines is such that in the 14th century, the Papacy in Avignon favoured the village as their summer residence, expanding the vineyards to suitable surrounding areas. To this day, each bottle of Chateauneuf bears the coat-of-arms of the city of Avignon, with its two crossed keys, those of Saint Peter, the first Pope. Seven Popes later, the rigour established in those times has survived the centuries. In fact, Chateauneuf became the working model for France's earliest appellation laws. Under the rules, 13 different varieties are permitted, though Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah and Cinsault dominate over Counoise, Clairette and Bourboulenc.

We continue to import wines from the Southern Rhone, handpicking from the the very best vintages and tasting and rating most of our selections to further guide you in your choice. When you buy Rhone wines online, you can have them shipped to most of Australia.
