Domaine Lefebvre d'Anselme is owned and run by Louis and Béatrice, now joined by their Son Marin, and is located in Sabran north west of Lirac. Production consists of whites, reds, and rosé within the Cotes du Rhone and Vin de France appellations, with the stand out wines their pair of Trilogie Cotes du Rhone. The white is a blend of 60% Roussanne and 40% Grenache Blanc, and is fresh and engaging showing the supple texture and complexity of the style. Their Trilogie red is a blend of 50% Grenache and 50% Syrah, and is no ordinary quaffing Cotes du Rhone. Just above medium weight, it's the deft mix of spice and garrigue notes combined with lush and incredibly pure fruit that is so engaging. Don't be surprised to see this evolve gracefully in the cellar for many years ahead. Both are an exciting addition to our shores.

Undeniably rich, chewy and powerful renowned Rhone wine critic Jeb Dunnuck describes them as ‘some of the best Cotes du Rhones out there…’.
A blend of 92% Grenache, 7% Mourvedre and 1% Carignan produced from vines planted in 1921 that yield little, but deliver incredibly concentrated fruit. Very deep dark red black in colour with a dark red hue. Fragrant spicy red to dark raspberry and red cherry scents infused with fresh herbs are married to hints of graphite, dried meats and blackpepper. Rich pepper laced red raspberry, liquorice and dark cherry fruits show ample power and freshness across the medium to full bodied palate. Provincial herb, crushed volcanic rock and spicy dried meat accents add further nuance. Lending a meaty, robust like feel is bright acidity and muscular tannins. Blackpepper laden, it finishes long and juicy yet a touch grippy.

The 2019 Rasteau Cuvée 1921 comes from ancient vines (planted in 1921) and is 92% Grenache, 7% Mourvedre, and 1% Carignan, which I believe was raised in tank. It takes plenty of air to open up and offers a striking Provençal bouquet of sweet black cherries, flowery incense, peppery garrigue, lavender, and saddle leather. It actually reminds me of walking through a street market in Vaison-La-Romaine in the south of France with its complex, incredibly satisfying Provençal aromatics. These characteristics all carry over to the palate, where the wine is medium to full-bodied, has a round, layered mouthfeel, ripe yet present tannins, and a great finish. It doesn't have the sheer elegance of, say, the 2016 or 2010, but it's a beauty. Give it a decant if drinking any time soon. It should put a smile on your face any time over the coming decade or more. Drink 2023-2034.

I reviewed the 2016s from Domaine les Aphillanthes in last year’s Southern Rhône report, but these latest 2017s are certainly in the same ballpark, if not a touch more elegant and seamless. As I said last year, readers looking for some of the best Côtes du Rhônes out there are well-advised to get on this estate’s bandwagon.

Climbing The Appellation Pyramid
For those new to European wines, the word 'appellation' probably represents a rather cryptic nomenclature certifying that wines have originated from their designated regions or 'terroirs'. It's also the reason why French wine labels tend to emphasise 'appellation of origin' followed by the estate owner or producer, rather than emphasising grape variety. Such labels presume that the consumer already knows what grape varieties the wine is composed of (amongst other things) by virtue of the appellation information supplied. The present day organisation of the French wine industry is founded on appellation d'origine laws conceived in the early part of twentieth century, initially as a practical response to economic depression and widespread fraud within the viticultural sector. They assured consumers that wines actually came from the places defined on their labels, so protecting the integrity and quality of French wine in general, and ultimately improving sales. Later decrees were even more prescriptive, dictating winemaking standards and obliging wine makers to plant the 'correct' grape varieties and to cap cropping levels (a significant determinant of wine quality). The system remains controversial amongst winemakers and causes confusion for the average wine lover, perhaps no where more so than in the Rhone Valley. As in other French wine regions, the Rhone's Appellations d'Origine Controlees (AOCs) rely on sets of rules based around the concept of 'terroir' (the interaction of soil and climate on wine quality) as well as specific local and historic practises. Essentially, the whole system is organised as a pyramid. The further you climb towards the summit, the more restrictive the criterias for production, the more prestigious the terroir and the better the wines should be. Extraordinary value from the 'Vintage of a Lifetime'
The 'Cotes du Rhone' AOC constitutes the base of the pyramid. The second level is the 'Cotes du Rhone Villages' AOC which follows slightly different rules. Out of ninety 'communes' allowed to produce Cotes Du Rhone, eighteen of them are allowed to step up the hierarchy ladder with the mention of the village name on their labels, provided they respect the more restrictive yields as well as other analytical requirements at harvest (our last Rhone offer included wines from such villages as Cairanne, Roaix, Rasteaux and Valreas).
Tasting Note 2010: A rising star of the Southern Rhône, Daniel Boulle, together with his wife Helene are known for their top-notch fruit. Until 1999 all the production was sold to a cooperative. Now the whole production is vinifed at the Domaine. A minimalist approach means quality of fruit is all important - in the winery Boulle lets the wine 'make itself'. The 'les Galets' is composed of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 20% Mourvedre. Outstanding black crimson colour with very deep black crimson hue. Aromas of black cherry, liquorice and spicy cedar followed by some dried meat and blackpepper notes. The palate displays excellent weight with concentrated favours of black cherry, liquorice, spice and blackpepper with an earthy dried meat overlay. Chewy, slightly dryish tannin structure but balanced. Excellent length with long aftertaste of black cherry, liquorice, spice and earth.

2009 Domaine Les Aphillanthes 1921 RasteauRasteau, Southern Rhone, FRANCE$36. 99Bottle$443.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2011-2019)ABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkFor Rhone enthusiasts this super value should be a no brainer.
In April this year we reported that 2009 in the Southern Rhone was another bargain hunter's delight. As samples have steadily rolled in the story of a vintage continues to unfold. It's now clear that given the torrid heat of 2009, early speculation anticipating the stellar quality of reds from less well drained terroirs has proved prudent.Secondly, searching out the small producers pays off. They embody an expanding trend of first rate growers who instead of selling their best fruit to big brand local negociants like 'Guigal', are now realising their viticultural flair justifies representation under their own labels. Thirdly, if you like Southern Rhone reds, (and given the pace at which these wines sell it's abundantly clear that most of you do), then pay particular attention to the 'Cotes du Rhone-Villages' (it's a step up from the basic Cotes du Rhone AOC).
Putting it all together you get a formula for some very shrewd buying and in 2009, Rasteau is arguably one of the first places you should be looking. Traditionally one of 19 tiny villages permitted to mention the village name on their labels (provided they respect the more restrictive yields as well as other analytical requirements at harvest), now as of 2010, Rasteau steps up the hierarchy even further, ranking with top flight appellations like Chateau Neuf du Pape, Cornas & Gigondas to name a few.
The 'Cru level' is the ultimate recognition of the collective effort of the Rasteau vignerons and makes these direct imports absolute bargains at todays prices.
The appellation's 880 hectares of vines are planted on marl and red and yellow clay soils over sandstone with rounded stones covering some sectors, which in heatwave vintages act like health insurance against hydric stress. By law, the Grenache component in the dry red blends must be 50% minimum, with Syrah and/or MourvËdre 20% minimum and other grape varieties of the appellation tolerated up to 20%.Since inital samples arrived eight months ago, tasting and retasting these reds has revealed a texture and structure that tends towards the 'classicism' of 2007 rather than the extreme 'fruit-bomb-forwardness' that characterised many 2009s. Right now, these are powerful, tannic, brawny wines showcasing the best elements of the vintage, and wines that will put Australian 'GSM' blends back in their place as the antecedents of these Southern Rhone archetypes. In short, here is another collection to reaffirm 2009 Rhone as one of the great high points of 2009 in the Northern hemisphere. But, be warned: At the extreme bargain end, the treasure trove is fast drying up and will be over sooner than you think. This is a direct shipment - no wholesalers. Our advice is to stock up now or never (and all the more so given the gloomy predicament for the 2011 vintage in Australia).
We would prefer to be promoting the interests of Australian producers, but the quality of several international vintages has made them simply impossible to ignore. 2009 Rhone should be nothing less than compelling for anyone looking for imported red wine bargains. Tasting note....
A rising star of the Southern Rhône, Daniel Boulle, together with his wife Helene are known for their top-notch fruit. Until 1999 all the production was sold to a cooperative. Now the whole production is vinified at the Domaine. A minimalist approach means quality of fruit is all important - in the winery Boulle lets the wine 'make itself'. His exceptional Grenache-heavy Rasteau is from a vineyard planted in 1921. Yields were an absurdly low 7 hectoliters per hectare. The wine pours a deep crimson red colour with a crimson red hue and offers aromas of black raspberry and dark cherry followed by some dried meat and spice notes. The palate possesses excellent weight with flavours of ripe raspberry, black cherry and spice followed by a meaty, peppery back palate. Terrific depth with a long aftertaste of black raspberry, liquorice, dried meat & blackpepper. While the tannins are not yet fully integrated the balance is appropriate to the fruit. Unquestionably the tightest wine in this Rasteau trifecta, cellaring beyond 2016 would not be an unrealistic expectation. It will benefit from a good decant if consumed early.

2009 in the Southern Rhone is been lauded in some circles as a successor to the stunning 2007 vintage; if not the 'vintage of a lifetime', then at least the 'vintage of a decade'. While it's true that there are remarkable bargains to be found and prices generally remain stable, it is not a carbon copy of 2007. 2009 was characterised by extended dry, hot conditions (there were 24 days on which the thermometer reached 35ºC, compared with only seven in 2007). Drought prevailed and some traditional, non irrigated vineyards exceeded stress thresholds rather than controlling tension. Scanty rains that came too late restored a semblance of balance, but it was only the less well drained and more expensive terroirs, like Vacqueyras and Gigondas, that produced uniform results.
The consensus amongst those who have conducted a comprehensive survey is that, overall, the quality is excellent but not as high as 2007 and, like the shock heatwave that hit South East Australia in '08, it is the seasoned and highly skilled vignerons who have risen to the top, (in particular, those who postponed harvest and benefited from the late September rains. This increased acidity and slightly diluted grape sugars). At the bottom of the pool are a minority who, for various reasons, including difficulty fermenting to dryness due to the elevated sugars, produced wines lacking the fruit/acid/tannin balance that winelovers expect from even the lowest appellation cuvees.
What does all this mean for the consumer? No question, 2009 in the Southern Rhone is another bargain hunter's delight. On the village level it offers opulent reds with outstanding concentration that are freak values by global standards. One only needs to exercise a little more caution and discernment to find them. Two other pluses make it a compelling vintage for Australian palates: The slightly less effusive international hype for '09 means that producers have had no justification to raise prices (except for the fact that yields were down). In fact, given their desperation to move mediocre wines from the diluted, rain drenched 2008 vintage (which we have completely passed over) they’ve been open to negociate - good news, but very good news when combined with the strength of the Australian dollar. In yet another direct shipment, we’ve secured wines from some of the Southern Rhone’s most adept grower/producers.
This estate falls under the supervision of star Rhone viticultural consultant, Phillipe Cambie, a man who seems as ubiquitous in the region's vineyards as he is consistently brilliant. Of the four different estates represented in our 2009 shipment he is the common driving force. A legendary Rhône consultant, Cambie, whom we first introduced by way of our 2007 Rhone offers, is a man whose huge physical proportions are matched by his obsession for ripe fruit and an uncanny ability on the blending table (backed up by a track record for re-invigorating estates stagnating in tradition). Cambie also consults to many of the top wines in Chateauneuf du Pape, including Pegau and Vieux Donjon. Described as 'a magician', he is said to possess an incredible ability to visualize final blends while tasting dozens of barrel samples. Combining the exceptional conditions of 2009 with Cambie's genius, all four producers have crafted some phenomenal wines.
No wholesaler margins apply in this one off direct shipment. It may be some time before we see quality like this coincide with such a strong Aussie dollar. Our advice is to stock up on this superb effort. Tasting note...

The wines are currently rolling into markets worldwide. Now is the time to stock up on some extraordinary values. If you enjoy Rhône reds pay particular attention to the 2007 wines that come in bearing the 'Côtes du Rhône-Villages' appellation (a step up from basic Côtes du Rhône). Village after village has managed more consistent and more powerful wines than any vintage in recent memory. The Shiraz and/or Grenache based blends are offering wine lovers a rare combination of exuberant ripe fruit, high natural alcohol, good balancing acidity, intensity of flavour and wonderfully soft-textured tannins. (Comparisons to South Australian wines of similar ilk are not far from the mark).
Robert Parker, pioneer of the most influential numerical wine-rating system currently in use describes this as the 'vintage of his lifetime' and has already awarded 100 points to an unprecedented 10 different '07 Rhône releases and upgraded many others to 96+. You might respond to such scores with visceral awe or just plain cynicism. Like it or not, numerical ratings for wines are so firmly entrenched in wine markets around the world that they're now demanded by consumers everywhere wanting to reduce their risk of purchase. There's cause for reflection as to the wider impact that the popularization of such rating systems have had on international markets, wine prices and styles. One positive contribution has been to jettison the elitist jargon of times past and destroy the 'feudal system' which continually rewarded only those vineyards on the most prestigious sites - both factors that too easily veil quality from the consumer. In this respect, Parker as pioneer and consummate consumer advocate earns his legitimacy "...at least in part by being an unimpeachable champion of the proletariat drinker, a poor pleb who knows himself too often beaten into submission by the grand tradition and price of wine, but who is also keenly aware of his own limitations in that vast world". Consequently, "Parker's wine credentials turn out to be no less moral than oenological". Small and large vineyards around the world now occupy a meritocracy where equal opportunities for high ratings exist, so encouraging indifferent winemakers to innovate and improve overall quality. This is certainly the case with regard to the three Rhône wines featured below. The common driving force behind each is Rhône consultant, Phillippe Cambie, whose huge physical proportions are matched by his obsession for ripe fruit and an uncanny ability on the blending table, backed up by a track record for re-invigorating estates stagnating in tradition. As usual, the ratings below are our own, though where possible we've included extra reviews from Robert Parker. You'll notice our scores consistently come in marginally higher than Parker's. This is partly because the Winespider evaluation method we use places greater emphasis on a wine's colour, particularly for young reds.No wholesaler margins apply here. One shipment only of these wines is available. We encourage you to jump at the opportunity. Critics and importers who can afford to tour European wine regions on a regular basis are fortunate, but increasing costs and limited resources usually make such adventures unviable for southern hemisphere retailers. Travel expenses have to be factored into any ensuing shipment, meaning the consumer ultimately pays more. To maximise value for money, we choose to call for samples to be sent to us and deal directly with the vignerons. Produced from a blend of 95% Grenache with the balance Syrah & Mourvedre. Domaine Les Aphillanthes was for many years a supplier of fruit to the local co-operative, it wasn’t until the late 1990’s that the Estate decided to begin producing its own label achieving almost instant success. Parker compares the quality of some of this estate's wines to the finest of Chateauneuf du Pape. This Domaine has employed the services of famed Rhone oenologist, Philippe Cambie as consultant. An outstanding example. Opaque dark red crimson colour with deep crimson mauve hue. Perfumed aromas of ripe blackberry, liquorice and spice with some meaty end notes. Medium to full bodied with plenty of ripe fruit the wine delivers flavours of very ripe raspberry, blackberry and liquorice allsorts followed by blackpepper, spice and leather on the back palate. Superb concentration and length. Dry, fine grained but firm tannins, which are almost leather like in their mouthfeel, providing the wine with excellent structure. Very long aftertaste of liquorice allsorts, ripe dark plum, blackpepper and leather.

Tasted from concrete, where it's been maturing since the beginning, the 2016 Cotes du Rhone Villages Cuvee Trois Cepages is equal parts Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre from the commune of Ste. Cécile les Vignes. This is lovely stuff—dark, rich, earthy and savory—supple upfront but adding dusty tannins on the long finish. It should drink well for close to a decade. Drink 2018-2025.

I think the star of the lineup is the 2015 Cotes du Rhone Villages Rasteau 1921 and this Grenache-dominated blend (there’s 7% Mourvèdre and a splash of Carignan) comes from a south-facing hillside parcel of very old vines. Full-bodied, pure, polished and even finesse-oriented, it has fabulous notes of black raspberries, garrigue and flowers. It will keep for 10-12 years.

Not long after Robert Parker began his assessment of 2009 Rhone in October 2010, he was commending winelovers to buy up. "This is the type of vintage consumers will love as the wines are fruit-forward, full-bodied, relatively high in alcohol with low acidity and sweet, well-integrated tannins". In this final shipment, traversing a range of terroirs the quality and value is obvious. They are wines that put Australian Grenache blends back in their place as the antecedents of these Southern Rhone archetypes. Now the treasure trove is drying up. One proviso on Parker's comments below: many of these wines were tasted before bottling. In this state, he tends to underrate wines initially, only to add points after they spend time in the bottle. The wines have rested since shipping and are now blossoming beautifully.
Tasting note: Opaque deep dark red black colour with dark red hue. The nose displays good perfumed lift with scents of black raspberry, black cherry, a touch of liquorice and some meaty spice like end notes. Rich, full bodied and possessing very impressive concentration the palate delivers a mouthfilling flavour experience of black raspberry, spice, black cherry and liquorice followed by some meaty earth like characters with some pepper persisting onto the back palate. At our initial tasting some 8 months ago the wine had a quite chewy mouthfeel, however, since then the tannins have softened to reveal all the lush opulent ripe dark fruit in all it’s glory. Still slightly chewy but fine grained tannins. Long aftertaste of black raspberry, black cherry, spice, pepper & dried meat. Cellar 4-5 years plus. Alc 14.5%

Domaine les Aphillanthes is located in the tiny village of Travaillan, just to the north of Châteauneuf du Pape, and is run by Daniel Boulle. Readers looking for some of the best Côtes du Rhônes out there are well advised to get on this estate’s bandwagon.
Not yet bottled, the 2016 Côtes du Rhône Villages Plan de Dieu Vieilles Vignes is a head turner that delivers everything you could want from a Côtes du Rhône. Blueberries, strawberries, spice and garrigue all emerge from this full-bodied, opulent, undeniably sexy 2016 that has sweet tannin and a great finish. A blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre, from 60-year-old vines, destemmed and aged in concrete tanks, it’s a quintessential southern Rhône to buy by the case.

JebDunnuck.comThe wines of Domaine les Aphillanthes never seem to get the big headlines, yet proprietor Daniel Boulle has been turning out rich, satisfying wines for decades. Biodynamic since 2003 (certified since 2007), Boulle explains that "the wine isn't made in the cellar; it's made all year long." These are wines notably marked by their hot terroir, but they rarely exhibit heat themselves. Situated in the often-overlooked region of Plan de Dieu, a flat, galet-strewn expanse to the west of Gigondas, Boulle has expanded into some more glamorous appellations in recent years, purchasing a property in Rasteau in 2009 and releasing his first Gigondas from the 2014 vintage.
An 80/20 blend of Grenache and Mourvèdre from vines over 60 years of age, the 2016 Cotes du Rhone Villages Plan de Dieu Vieilles Vignes is so promising from tank. It's dark fruited, tight and reserved on the nose but explodes on the palate with power, combining high alcohol, high extract and ample acidity. It should be exciting when it's released and drink well for 5-7 years. Drink 2018-2025.

When one comes across a wine like this in a blind tasting, it's human nature to second-guess the initial reaction. Yet every time I went back to the wine that turned out to be the Brunels' 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Centenaire, I came away astounded by its complexity and balance. Yes, it's full-bodied, but it's also light on its feet, a lithe vinous gymnast, wiry and strong yet graceful and loaded with nuance. The soaring aromas and flavors range from raspberries and cherries through to roses, black tea, thyme and lavender in this incredible wine. I suspect it will rival the legendary 1990 and 1998 versions.

Joe Czerwinski - Wine Advocate (Sept 2018)Shimmering magenta. Intensely perfumed red fruit, floral and spice qualities on the expressive nose, which takes on a lively mineral element as the wine opens up. Shows outstanding energy and sharp delineation to the sweet raspberry and cherry preserve, candied lavender, spicecake and cola flavors, which are supported by a spine of juicy acidity. Finishes extremely long and smooth, with fine-grained tannins lending shape to repeating red fruit and floral notes. There's something Burgundian, albeit ripe-year Burgundy, happening here that's extremely attractive. Raised in 70% concrete tanks and 30% demi-muids.

It's a thrilling wine that's behind the otherworldly 1990 and 1998 but is in the same league as the 2007 and 2010. With a massive bouquet of kirsch liqueur, crushed flowers, violets, and honeysuckle, it has full body, no hard edges, beautiful purity of fruit, ripe, polished tannin, and a great finish.

Jeb DunnuckUnlike the 2015, this is 100% destemmed. The comparison is marked, this is immediately denser in style, with a touch of cocoa, silk rope tannins and plentiful glycerol on the palate. It's not an overly full-bodied wine, not appearing terribly concentrated at present however it is very harmonious, long and shapely, with real finesse. Drinkable now, but will undoubtedly improve. I would wait.

2012 Domaine Maby Nessun DormaLirac, Southern Rhone, FRANCE$29. 99Bottle$359.88 DozenCellar: 4 - 5 Years (2020-2021)ABV: 15%Closure: CorkThe appellation of Lirac is just across from Chateauneuf du Pape on the right bank of the Rhone. Not surprisingly, it shares many features of its prestigious neighbour, such as weather patterns and geology, with the added benefit of a few of its own variances and nuances. While the vignerons of Chateauneuf excel in their use of powerful Grenache, their Lirac counterparts apply themselves to crafting structured, refined and elegant reds, as well as powerful Roses that can rival those of Bandol. This subtle shift in style is only possible by using the diversity of terroirs and varietals at their disposal, with the same quartz rocks found in Chateauneuf but also slopes covered with eroded limestone from the surrounding cliffs. Far from being the poor cousin to Chateauneuf, Lirac wines stand with their own individuality, and there is even a sense of rivalry between the appellations, with Lirac showing great pride in attracting more and more vignerons from Chateauneuf, aiming to produce different expressions of the Rhone varietals. If the wines of Lirac seem esoteric, it is in part due to the small size of the vineyard area as well as its relative 'seclusion' away from the main roads leading to the South of France.
Our continuing relationship with the Rhone's top viticultural consultant, Philippe Cambie, allows us to introduce his projects on a regular basis, as he takes on new consultancies with off the ground projects or even with well established Domaines, as is the case with Domaine Maby. Considered as one of the "locomotives" in Lirac , Domaine Maby has for long been at the forefront of modernisation in both the cellar and vineyards and are always pursuing new paths to further refine their style. We have narrowed their selection to two wines that we thought would best represent the region, the remarkable "Nessun Dorma" red the alluring "La Fermade" Rose. Their varietal compositions are a little different than what we are used to. We trust you'll find them as novel and appealing as we did. They represent another terrific discovery from the Rhone's vast patchwork of terroirs.A Southern Rhone blend of Grenache and Syrah. Totally opaque black red colour with a bright dark crimson red hue. Aromas of liquorice and ripe black cherries intermixed with black raspberries are followed by subtle scorched earth notes, dried meats and a hint of pepper. It’s a terrific Grenache that offers full-bodied richness, ripe, sweet tannin, and a rocking mid-palate. It will shine on release and keep through 2026.

A blend of Grenache, Syrah & Mourvedre. Totally opaque dark red black colour with a dark red hue. Elevated black raspberry and black cherry aromas combine with some liquorice, subtle incense infusions and spicy scorched earth. The full bodied palate is loaded with juicy black raspberry and liquorice flavours with spicy scorched earth and incense infusions finishing with a burst of blackpepper. A sturdy tannin structure provides some grip for the opulent fruit to hang on to. There’s a sense of chewiness to the mouthfeel with a long pepper infused aftertaste of black raspberries, liquorice, subtle scorched earth and spicy incense.

Joe Czerwinski - Wine Advocate (May 2022)The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée De Mon Aïeul is also all Grenache but was raised all in demi-muids (I believe all used). Its more ruby/plum color is followed by an incredible bouquet of mulled red and black fruits, sweet Provençal herbs, spice box, and graphite. It's slightly broader and more expansive than the Deux Freres and has a sexy, full-bodied mouthfeel, ripe, polished tannins, and a great finish. This reminds me a little of the 2006, and while it's already brilliant, I have no doubt it will evolve for 15-20 years in cold cellars. Drink 2022 - 2042.

A deeper, darker color compared to the Mon Aïeul, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve des Deux Freres is also 100% Grenache that was completely destemmed and brought up all in wood, with 20% being new. This cuvée is always a selection of the best lots in the cellar. Crème de cassis, blackberries, white flowers, candle wax, cured meats, street market and spice nuances all soar from the glass of this awesome wine. Deep, incredibly full-bodied, and powerful, yet also light on its feet and graceful, with elegant tannin, it's an extraordinary wine that's going to benefit from short-term cellaring and cruise for two decades. JebDunnuck.comI'm not typically a fan of Grenache aged in new, smaller oak vessels, but the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des 2 Freres works. It's 100% Grenache aged in new 300-liter barrels for 14-15 months. Vanilla and baking spices make themselves known, but this full-bodied, plush wine offers waves of Christmas cake-like flavors and unimaginable enveloping softness, balanced by decent acids and a long, supple finish. It's considerably fresher than I remember the 2015 being. Drink 2018-2030.

When you consider what this estate has accomplished over the past two decades, it’s easy to include Domaine Pierre Usseglio as not only one of the top addresses in Châteauneuf-du-Pape but in all of France as well. They have been on a sensational roll since 1998 and have yet to put a foot wrong. And that’s apparent with these latest 2016s, which I believe are the best wines ever produced here. In addition to the Châteauneuf-du-Pape releases, the estate makes a fabulous Côtes du Rhône and Lirac, both of which over-deliver.
Getting more than one exclamation in the notes, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de Mon Aïeul is a deep, rich yet vibrant red that offers a kaleidoscope of kirsch liqueur, garrigue, crushed flowers, Asian spices, and cured meats. It's more opulent and sexier than the 2010, fresher and purer than the 2007, has deep, full-bodied aromas and flavors, and a huge finish. It's a sensational, heavenly Châteauneuf-du-Pape that tops out my scale. This cuvée is 100% Grenache that was not destemmed and was aged in 20% demi-muids and the balance in concrete tanks. JebDunnuck.comFans of super ripe, rich, lusty Grenache-based wines will continue to enjoy the current crop of offerings from Thierry Usseglio at the domaine named for his father. These are not shy, demure wines, but despite their massive ripeness (sometimes exceeding 16% alcohol), they still show a modicum of elegance. The tannins are always supple, the extraction gentle, and the wines show no hard edges—the word zaftig comes to mind. "What's unusual about 2016 is the combination of concentration and freshness," said Usseglio, who used 30% to 40% whole clusters in his regular Châteauneuf du Pape that year. "It's interesting for the spice and balance," he said. In 2017, given the tiny crop, he backed off on the proportion of whole clusters, dropping down to 20%.
All Grenache, all whole cluster and from parcels in the lieux-dits of La Guigasse, Le Crau and Les Serres, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul has evolved beautifully since I tasted it last year, showing vibrant floral and tea-like notes, raspberry fruit and hints of licorice. It's full-bodied, rich and velvety, with overtones of spice cake on the long, crisp finish. Tasting it, I was surprised to find out what the alcohol level was, because it showed no obvious heat—a testament to how much else is going on here. Drink 2018-2030.
