An automotive design engineer by day, John Lentini spent 14 years making wine for family and friends out of a Melbourne Suburban garage before his passion lead him to the Barossa where he took a leap of fate to begin his own winemaking venture. Fruit was sourced from a single vineyard in the Eden Valley sub region Keyneton with vines 20 years old. Incorporated into ferment was 10% whole bunch fruit with maturation taking place in French oak hogsheads (30% new) for a period of 18 months.

Potent black cherry, liquorice and dark plum scents infiltrate the olfactory senses and are interwoven with smoky cedar, dried meats, scorched earth and peppered herbs. What a deep and complex briar and spicy nose this exceptional Heathcote shiraz has! Cloves and crushed slate with gun metal. Very complex fine-grained tannins and great mineral freshness drive this over the palate and off into the distance. Excellent aging potential. Drink or hold.

2021 was an exceptional Barossa vintage with mild to warm days and no heat spikes, combined with cool nights resulted in a long even ripening period. Best known for producing arguably Australia’s greatest Chardonnay, Leeuwin Estate’s Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon has demonstrated over recent vintages that it can match it with best of the region and comparatively still remains under priced when compared to other Margaret River heavy weights such as Cullen & Moss Wood.
Predominately Cabernet Sauvignon with a 4% Malbec component also included in the blend, this wine was matured in French oak (50% new) for a period of 22 months.
Totally opaque black dark red colour with a deep dark red hue. Compelling aromas of red to black currant, violet and mulberry captivate the olfactory senses with vanillin cedar, tobacco, subtle dusty earth and bay leaf scents ensuing. Rich red to black currant and mulberry fruits are generously layered across the regal medium bodied palate with vanillin cedar, tobacco, earth and bay leaf elements lying underneath. Superb refinement with seamlessly integrated fine grained tannins marrying into a long elegant finish.

It’s masterful to craft a wine that is structured, detailed, powerful and concentrated, and yet, it feels effortless. Mulberries, cassis, warm spices, violets and cedary oak come together in harmony while the tannins sashay across the palate. Flavours persist, as does the finish, and it will age beautifully but hard to resist now. Impressive wine. Drink by 2042.

The 2019 Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon has admirable fruit presence in the mouth. As an immediate follow on from the great 2018 vintage, the 2019 vintage was cooler and wetter, but the average quality across the region was excellent. In many corners, the quality is argued as being on par with the 2019; it comes down to a matter of preference. Here, the wine is elegant and fine, very aromatic. It's an excellent wine and a clear statement about the direction and refinement of the Cabernet program at Leeuwin. Drink 2023-2045.

Gosh this is good. This is the region and the variety and the estate all committing to the task and combining to exemplary effect. Such structure, such fruit, such balance and such impact. Blackcurrant and pencils, dark chocolate and herbs, some eucalypt lift and even some florals. Tannin, my word, it’s beautifully formed, a keel with wings, a determinant. I kept tasting this wine and it kept telling me things. Leeuwin Estate cabernet is now right up there with the best. Drink 2028-2040+

Shiraz from the 20-year-old Pancake Creek vineyard in Gembrook; 100% destemmed and matured in older 300L French hogsheads. A gorgeous bright crimson. An intriguing nose with its bright maraschino cherries, red apple skin, satsuma plums and violets. Really bright and crunchy fruited on the palate and the tannins are fine and sophisticated. The perfect wine for steak and frittes.

One of those really beautiful syrahs that could share DNA between pinot noir and nebbiolo/nerello mascalese. Tightly wound, compact feel, grippy with fine, silty, pumice-like tannins and lashed with woody spice and green herbs. Way more about savouriness than fruit character though dark cherry and black olive come about. It’s stretches luxuriously and with an authority. Serious syrah, seriously good. Drink: 2023-2035.

German born Timo Mayer, along with partner Rhonda Ferguson established Mayer in 1999, on the slopes of Mt Toolebewong, between Healesville & Woori Yallock. They produce a small range of hand crafted, single vineyard wines, believing that wines are made in the vineyard and not the winery. All wines are unfined and unfiltered to show the true expression of the vineyard.
Part of a new range started with the 2021 vintage, the fruit for this Pinot is purchased from the Lusatia Park vineyard in Woori Yallock, in the volcanic terrains of the Upper Yarra Valley.
Unlike Timo's ‘Mayer’ range, this is a different style of Pinot, somehow in continuity with the Gembrook Hill style (where Timo worked as head of winemaking for a long time). Fruit is all de-stemmed, whole-berry fermented rather than whole-bunch, resulting in a delicate, pure and fragrant expression of Pinot Noir.

Whoa, vibrant. Elevated perfume, smells like a herb garden in full flight, a touch of red cherry, but backseat in that wild scree. Lovely stuff. The palate is more red fruited, spicy and herbal again, balanced in its elements and tightens in a web of silty, mineral-charged tannin. Structure, tension, length, poise. A delight. Off the farm. A 100% whole bunch ferment. “The best thing the Yarra Valley does at the moment is chardonnay and syrah”, quips Timo, “don’t tell anyone though”.
A crisp and textural, medium weight, lightly crunchy red of raspberry fruit dosed with white pepper, faint mezcal notes, game meat, cardamom and rose hip tea – vivid perfume and palate. A silkiness upfront but a sheath of ultra fine, Italianate tannin slips in and tightens things up nicely. Savoury and pretty at once. Drink: 2024-2033.

When Timo cheered "bring back the funk!", it was this wine that originally delivered on the promise. He's since released the Dr expression which dials up this ethos even further, but his Close Planted Pinot still holds a special place in many Pinot lover's hearts. Wonderfully aromatic and silky, the power of the Pinot fruit can be deceptive here, but there's no mistaking this is one of the Yarra Valley's finest wines each year.

Quite a crisp, bright pinot noir, textural with a haze of silty tannin, succulence through the long finish, lots of spice. Reeks of red cherry, tastes similar, a touch of old spice cupboard and warm slate mineral character, anise in there too. Complex. Layered. Quite light and fine, understated. We're sure Timo wasn't the first person to throw 100% whole bunch winemaking at Cabernet, but he's certainly balanced the approach better than most would have expected. This is far from the green monster you would fear from this tactic, rather it's exudes vibrant cherry and blueberry fruit, seasoned by wild herbs and spice.

Made from fruit from from a north-facing slope on Hans and Anna Orth's vineyard on St Huberts Road in Coldstream; 100% whole bunches, 10% new oak. A saturated crimson purple. Made more in the style of the Loire Valley's Chinon than Australian cabernet sauvignon, there's a lot going on here with its aromas of blackberries and blackcurrants, together with salted licorice, black olives and spice-rack spices. Saline on the palate, with good depth of fruit and fine, dusty tannins, this is a wine to be enjoyed with food, now and over the next 5 or so years. Drink by 2027.

This is a masterclass in refinement. It is svelte and streamlined, the cool, mineral spool of flavour across the tongue is what the 2019 vintage can look like at its most restrained and harnessed. The length of flavour basically flutters out over the finish, so weightless and enduring. The 2018 that came before it had a thundering, legendary quality - legs widespread, hands on hips, power pose. This is the creative in the family, the quiet guy. It's intriguing and intelligent and thoughtful ... poignantly red fruited, spicy and super-supple. I'm descending into hyperbole. It's unnecessary. This is another great Moss Wood release. There was some debate around a decade ago that this iconic Margaret River winery had lost a little of its glitter and that the wines were not what they once were. I was not quite as onboard with that as some – in fairness, it is not easy to remain at the pinnacle for a half century – but in recent years, the levels of quality they have attained have put to rest any such doubts. These guys now make some of the most thrilling wines in Margaret River and none better than their Cabernet. There are some world class Cabs made in the region and the MW sits with the very best. This vintage ranks with the finest of recent releases and there have been some crackers. To be honest, to look at this, I slipped it into a tasting which friends had organised, which was of some “super-second level” Bordeaux and great Margaret River Cabernets, from vintages as far back as 1990, right up to today. It will give an indication of how well it went if I tell you that one friend, not usually known for purchasing anything other than the great wines of Europe, rang the next day to say he had already picked up a six pack.
96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, this is elegance personified. A low yielding and slightly cooler vintage, the grapes went into small open tanks for fermentation, with thrice daily hand-plunging. 15 days on skins and then pressed to tank before it was racked to French oak, 15% new. Over two years maturation. As mentioned, elegance personified. A silky combination of coiled power and finesse, this is a glorious Cabernet. Blackberries, spices, tobacco leaves, kid leather, violets, cigar box notes, aniseed and delicately integrated oak. There is a gossamer-like web of complexity weaving through the wine. Seamless, great length and cashmere tannins. This is a brilliant wine. Ten years, twenty years? How long have you got? If you are serious about great Australian Cabernet, this is a must for your cellar.

Generally, contrary to many, I tend to favour 2019 Margaret Cabernet over 2018. A bit more brooding, dense, tight, ‘minerally’, and all that.
Powerful, compact, brooding sort of style, but tight too, all black fruit, dark chocolate, a seasoning of bay leaf and baking spice, some floral notes peeping over the top. Tannin is earthy and dense, but smooth and layered, boysenberry and dark raspberry, firm acidity set neatly inside, and a tobacco and black olive savoury finish of length and intensity. A very strong release, indeed maybe the best in the last decade. High drinkability, even early.

Concentrated, silky and lingering, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is elegant and fine with salted licorice, ripe raspberry, dark chocolate and exotic spice. Excellent purple/black hue. In a way a commanding wine, yet it has alluring perfume, and a wave of spices over black fruit. Full bodied, deep, earthy and complex. Ribbons of tannins strung through, a touch raspy (presumably from toasty oak) but either way, it offers a solid drink today, or more refinement in a few years. Drink by 2032.

Tasting Note: An extraordinary bottle of wine, even 'blind freddy' can tell that it's 'posh'. This wine definitely draws its inspiration from Bordeaux First Growth, and in particular, Chateau Lafite and Chateau Latour in its finesse and construction. It's almost impossible to compare this wine with other Australian reds, as neither its structure or flavour conforms to an Australian norm. It is without a doubt a world class wine. Made by Mario Marson, John Middleton's winemaker at Mount Mary, the wine is a reaffirmation of the fact that Australia is capable of producing First Growth quality and finesse. Deep crimson colour, with purple mauve hues. Superb complex aristocratic nose, powerful aromas of violets, blackcurrant, spice and cedar fill in the nose with an aire of grace and confidence only seen in First Growths. The palate is superbly structured - elegant, and yet filled with remarkable power and concentration of flavour. A seamless marriage of component parts - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Exquisite balance with very long aftertaste of cedar, violets and blackcurrants. A totally refined experience. Cellar 8-15 years.

Mount Mary are proper pleased with this release. Sam Middleton, he who now heads the wine team at Mount Mary, said to me at a trade tasting that ‘we’re really pleased with the 2010, things feel right with this wine, a great season for us too. Could become one of our best’. This is a blend of 47% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, 14% cabernet franc, 5% petit verdot, 4% malbec.
Whoowee, dig this perfume. Really complex aroma spectrum – immediately engaging too. Cassis, dark fruits, touch of briar herbal lift, flash of mint, chocolatey and stubbed out cigar embers. At once cool and rich. Slender ribbons of fruit, acid and fine bony tannin across the palate. Has that succulent but strict feel, like sucking on a hard lolly as it diminishes. Beautiful, medium-bodied feel too – the wine finishes long and pure, eddying with the linger of tannin and powdered slate-like minerality. It’s in that zone of refreshment and elegance, where a repeat visit to the glass is effortless but there’s lots to explore in texture and flavour. Could be a contender for best cabernet (and cabernet blend) for me for the year (2012 releases). Drink 2012 - 2032.

Open-fermented under the aegis of ambient yeast before malo in barrel, sulfuring and time in bottle before release. Typical warm-climate shiraz. Chocolaty, meaty and rich, with abundant fruitcake spice, dark-fruit allusions and oak. The tannins are well hewn for compression and focus. Uncanny levels of freshness. Plenty to like here. This McLaren vale Shiraz comes from an old block planted in 1974 with the Reynella clone. It follows a similar winemaking approach to the Grenache with open fermentation and no additions of acid, tannin or sulphur following indigenous yeast fermentation. The extra richness and weight has enabled a small amount of new oak influence which brings a nice lift and energy to the palate. So fine and smoothly balanced with a strong sense of tasting the vineyard here. Drink 2022-2034.

It leans towards black pepper rather than to white. It has elements of reduction, but its tones remain woody, walnutty and smoky. Matured in new French oak for 36 months. Totally opaque black core with a deep dark to brick red black tinged hue. Potent ripe blackcurrant scents mix with liquorice, earth, vanillin cedar, dried herb and subtle leather notes. Rich blackcurrant fruits flood the full bodied palate with some liquorice, earthy vanillin cedar, leather and spicy dried herbs lingering on the back half. Finishes dry and firm with a robust tannin structure and long slightly chewy aftertaste.
Drink over the next 2-3 years.

A barrel selection from the best vintages from Home Block vineyard, 30 months in French oak, then 4 years cellaring at the winery. It is opulent yet well balanced, repeated tastings revealing a wine of great class with a long future.

The 2016 Grange includes 3% Cabernet Sauvignon and was sourced from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Clare Valley, with a little bit from Magill Estate, in the suburbs of Adelaide. Aged in 100% new American oak (as always), it offers up trademark lifted aromas plus scents of vanilla, toasted coconut, cedar, raspberries and blackberries. Impressively concentrated and full-bodied, with an extraordinarily long, velvety finish, it's nevertheless reasonably fresh and tight, with decades of cellaring potential if properly stored. Certainly at least on a par with such vintages as 2010 and 2012, the big question is whether it will ultimately reach triple digits. Drink 2025-2050.

Penfolds nailed the great vintage, making a wine that is perfect in every way. The blend of 97% shiraz and 3% cabernet sauvignon comes from the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley and Magill Estate in Adelaide, in that order, and as usual spent 18 months in new American hogsheads. Its detail is superb, with light and shade allowing blackberry and plum fruit pride of place, but there's also flashes of spice and licorice. It's as mouthwatering with the last taste as the first, and 7.3g/l of acidity leaves the mouth fresh.

A blend of 97% shiraz and 3% cabernet sauvignon from Barossa, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley and Magill Estate. This is a very intense Grange with such rich black-fruit, tar and coal-smoke aromas together with iodine and black-olive notes and an array of wild dark herbs. Almost impenetrable dark plums and licorice, as well as bacon fat. The palate has such seamless delivery of intense blackberry and plum flavors with some redder tones emerging, too. The power here is countered by such freshness and an almost elegant feel. This has such impressive, vibrant, long and seamless fruit power. Really is exceptionally complete, but tight, needs time to open. Very enjoyable now, but better after 2023.

Sourced only from the Barossa Valley, RWT is aged exclusively in French oak, giving it two major points of difference from the rest of the Penfolds range. Always a sexy, voluptuous wine (and admittedly a personal favorite), the 2018 RWT Shiraz ratchets that up to new heights in a great Barossa vintage, boasting layers of berry-like fruit, refined vanilla shadings and baking-spice notes, plus more exotic elements like star anise and cocoa powder. It's full-bodied and plush without being unstructured in any way, with a lingering, complex finish and the concentration to age two decades or more.

This has a very attractively fresh, showy feel to the nose with aromas of ripe red cherries, blackberries, goji berries and redcurrants, as well as red plums and some wild-herb and licorice notes on offer, too. Very expressive and fragrant. The palate has a super intense and powerful delivery of ripe red-cherry and plum flavors and immaculately fresh French oak (64% new) that really clasps and holds the finish long. The tannins are so ripe and well positioned. Drink over two decades.

Plush and opulent, this bombshell in a striking oak corset makes an exuberant entry, striding down the red carpet with its ample fruit talking in a bright, effusive voice. After that brassy entry it settles in the glass, its blackberry and brulée flavours singing softly atop a bed of powdery tannins, and the nutty, cedar tones framing a long finish. Having changed so much since its inaugural 1997 vintage, RWT ('Red Winemaking Trial') has never presented its fruit so voluptuously and immediately, with oak now part of the supporting cast rather than playing the star role.

This '20 release marks the 60th anniversary of Bin 389. It is a 57/43% blend from McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Coonawarra, Robe and Wrattonbully, matured in American hogsheads (38% new). A perennial favourite of mine, though the price does cause me to blink. It has great colour, and a supple mouthfeel that invests the wine with a hint of elegance, underlined by the fluid, flawless balance, the length a given. Drink by 2040.

A blend of 57% cabernet sauvignon and 43% shiraz, this has a very impressively complete feel, a hallmark of the 2018 vintage wines, and there’s a myriad of characters with cabernet’s cedary and gently herbal notes sitting atop a core of rich red-plum and dark-berry shiraz fruit aromas. So integrated. The palate has a very silky texture, so plush and polished with a wealth of rich and intense dark-plum, dark-berry and blackcurrant flavors. The oak is completely soaked with ripe, fresh fruit. This is a great Bin 389. Drink over the next two decades. Screw cap.

Medium to full red-purple, still bright after five years, vibrant cherry and plum fruit aromas more than handle the oak on the bouquet; the palate is sumptuous, but not heavy, the cherry and plum flavours tracking the bouquet. The wine has a very long finish, with fine, integrated tannins. Destined to become one of the great Granges.

This dark purple-colored wine exhibits notes of sweet plum, blackberry, and cassis intermixed with some licorice, chocolate, and espresso. It is a blend of 94% Shiraz and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon that tips the scales at 14+% alcohol. The wine is layered, unctuously textured, full-bodied with tremendous intensity, moderately high tannin, and a 40-second finish. The wine needs a good 4-5 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2025. This Grange should ultimately merit a higher score when it is closer to its plateau of drinkability.

Medium to full red, with just a touch of purple remaining; powerful, complex dark fruits, chocolate and savoury lemon/vanilla oak on the bouquet, then a similarly powerful palate where earth and chocolate join the chorus of flavours promised by the bouquet; persistent tannins, of course. It's hard to suggest this will be regarded as a great Grange in 20 years or so, but it is nonetheless in the mainstream of Grange style.

The 1997 Grange (a blend of 96% Shiraz and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon) looks to be a classic Grange, although slightly softer and more forward than the backward 1996. The saturated purple-colored 1997 offers a gorgeously sweet nose of blackberry liqueur, cherries, camphor, chocolate, plums, and mocha. The wine is opulently-textured, extremely soft, layered, and seductive, with Grange's tell-tale personality well-displayed, but in a seamless, seductive style. This is a superb Grange that can hold its own against the more heralded 1996. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2022.

An outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon and more approachable than the 1996 Grange which was tasted along side it, as part of a tasting of the Penfolds Super Premium Red wine releases. Opaque, crimson colour with a black heart. Superb aromas. The Cabernet is obvious from the first sniff - sophisticated, very refined, yet surprisingly open at this stage. Aromas of cedar, blackcurrant, tobacco and violets, with just the faintest trace of leafy Cabernet as an end note. The palate is tight knit, with dusty Cabernet dry tannins perfectly matched to the classy blackcurrant, cedar and liquorice flavours. On the back palate the leafy character reappears but is handled as a complexing layer of flavour, rather than the usual mischievous fault that it can be. Outstanding length and depth of flavour. Very concentrated, with exceptionally long aftertaste of cedar, tobacco and blackcurrant. A Classic 707 from the Greatest Vintage of the last century.
