With nearly 30 years spent making Penfolds Grange and developing the RWT label at Penfolds, John Duval qualifies as one of Australia's living wine legends. In 2003 he launched John Duval Wines and wasted no time sourcing some of South Australia's finest fruit. “After 35 years in the business, I know who the best growers are,” comments Duval. Today, John is joined by his son Tim who assists with both winemaking and marketing.
2021 was an exceptional Barossa vintage with mild to warm days and no heat spikes, combined with cool nights resulted in a long even ripening period. Fruit was sourced from old vineyards in the Krondorf, Tanunda, Marananga, Ebenezer, Moppa and Eden Valley districts, the final blend being made from 75% Barossa Valley and 25% Eden Valley fruit. Maturation took place in French oak (25% new) for a period of 15 months.

Rich, plush and powerful but not weighty this is modern day Barossa perfection.

Spectacular colour featuring an impenetrable inky black heart with an equally deep dark purple black hue. Heady aromas of blackberry, liquorice and dark plum complimented by spicy vanillin cedar, mocha, hints of fennel and peppered earth notes dazzle the olfactory senses. Rich, plush and powerful but not weighty, cascading waves of opulent blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits are layered across the palate with tremendous concentration and depth. Vanillin cedar, earthy mocha characters and spice lend further complexity. Super polished and refined, the silky yet structured matrix of tannins are seamlessly integrated. Concludes fresh, exceptionally long and velvety.
Drink over the next 10-12 years.
