    There's only one 350-liter barrel of the 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot, but the resulting wine is lovely, revealing aromas of pear, orange oil, nutmeg and clove, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless palate. Unfortunately, I imagine securing even a bottle or two will be a considerable challenge.

    A fruity, saline laced white that carries gorgeous textural shape.

    Bright straw colour with a watery hue. Aromas of pear, lime and green apple fill the nostrils followed by some Mediterranean herb infusions and stony mineral notes that have a saline like edge. Delicious pear and green to red apple fruits carry gorgeous textural shape across the palate. Traces of lime, tangerine, wet slate and a saline like minerality lie underneath. Crisp acidity with a long fruity, saline laced finish.

    From 34-year-old vines on tertiary limestone soils. the 2023 Ölberg-Hart Königsbach Riesling VDP.Grosse Lage is deep, pure, flinty and particularly smoky on the intense and complex, distinctively mineral nose. The wine is pure, saline and tensioned on the palate yet also reveals ripe and dense as well as juicy fruit with a fine and persistent mineral structure and lingering salinity. This is a young but complex GG from Königsbach. 12% stated alcohol. Diam 30 cork. Tasted at the domaine in January 2024. Drink 2026-2055.

    The 2023 Riesling Königsbach Ölberg-Hart Grosses Gewächs comes from the core parcel of the Ölberg on calcareous marl. Yeasty funk on the nose, for now, obscures the fruit. However, the palate is bright, lithe, vivid and citric, with a beautiful concentration and supple, smooth, cooling depth. Round and elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, pure, saline and crunchy Riesling whose style is clearly aligned with the Pinot Noir. Just a touch of spice, reminiscent of cumin seed, appears on the shy nose. The palate is slender and traces a central spine of citric brightness that is luminous and seems to sink deep into the soil.     The 2020er Idig GG, as it is referred to on the consumer label, presents a beautifully smoky and floral nose of anise, cassis, jasmine, licorice, and herbs, as well as a hint of camphor. The wine proves superbly zesty and elegant on the comparatively light-weighted yet complex palate. The finish is super long and focused, despite more weight and presence coming through, especially with airing. The overall balance remains on the fresh and lively side, and we would opt to enjoy this beauty rather in its primary phase of development. Drink 2023-2030.

    The 2020er Ölberg-Hart GG, as it is referred to on the consumer label, captures one’s attention with some beautifully refined and aromatic notes of almond cream, herbs, spices, candied grapefruit, anise, and Conference pear. The wine develops great juicy presence which gives it depth and complexity, while the finish is more restrained but also zesty and spicy. It proves still compact but the overall complexity at play is superb. There is a little bit more presence and intensity in the very long finish, so that we would opt to enjoy it rather in its youth. Drink 2024-2028.

    Christmann's 2020 Vogelsang Neustadt Riesling Grosse Lage is the first release of this steep cru that the family bought three years before. The wine opens with a coolish and lime-fresh bouquet of crushed stones and lemons. It is remarkably cool and fresh for the vintage, which comes through on the palate. Here, the wine shows super-ripe and intense fruit, whereas the coolish and saline limestone terroir comes out only on the finish with fresh and lemon-scented acidity and long, mouthwatering salinity. There are fine tannins and bitters on the aftertaste. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in November 2022. Drink 2027 - 2047.

    From the block right next to the cellar on the family property in Swartland. The bottom part of the old vine (1960s planted) block,
    Has a lot of lemon balm, quince and dried herb character with a touch of something buttery. Slippery texture, chewy, dense and long. Powerful and expressive. Slick and luscious yet maintains its dryness and shows poise. Serious white wine, built for contemplation. Drink 2022 - 2026.

    Steen is of course the old South African name for chenin blanc. This comes from an old vine parcel. Au naturale winemaking of course, from one of South Africa’s most notable winemakers, and one who was part of a revolution for avant garde and premium wine from the country.
    High toned green herb, floral and appley aromas and flavours, a good deal of saline nuttiness and wheatgerm savouriness. It’s very concentrated and decidedly savoury, preserved lemon but with a huge, oatmeal savouriness to taste and chewy, powdery-minerally feel. Great intensity and yet control. Outstanding. Drink 2022 - 2028.

There is impressive volume to the dense and seductively textured medium weight flavors thanks to the abundant amount of dry extract that imparts a sappy quality to the lingering, powerful and balanced finale. This is noticeably less refined, indeed it's mildly rustic, but offers excellent quality for its level. Recommended. Drink through 2029+.

    An exuberantly floral nose also displays notes of petrol, rosemary oil and a variety of white orchard fruit scents. The rich, concentrated, powerful and sappy larger-bodied flavors coat the palate with dry extract while delivering excellent length on the muscular and mildly rustic finale. This isn't refined but it's very Morgeot in style and character. Well-worth checking out if you enjoy generous and full-bodied white burgs. Drink through 2030+.

The main contributor is the Baby Duck vineyard, planted on granite soils on a gentle southern slope in the Polkadraai Hills ward, while the second vineyard is planted in the Upper Blaauwklippen Valley on deep red soil.

    The grapes were hand sorted and whole bunch pressed. The resulting juice was very lightly settled with no additions and wild fermented in old barrels of various sizes. After fermentation, the wine was kept on lees for around twelve months, then rested in tank on fine lees without fining for a further six months prior to bottling.

    The 2022 Hereafter Here is a mixture of young and old vines due to the higher yields this year, whole bunch pressed with 18 months élevage, two-thirds on the lees. The well-defined bouquet has yellow plum, orange blossom, Japanese yuzu and crushed stone aromas. The palate is very harmonious, with a crisp line of acidity. A linear, almost Zen-like razor-sharp Chenin displaying wonderful nerve on the finish. Superb. Drink 2024 - 2034.

    New to the range this year comes the 2022 Hereafter Here made from 100% Chenin Blanc. The nose is zesty, bright and fresh, with notes of lemon oil and dusty citrus blossom. Medium-bodied and with 13% alcohol, the palate offers energetic acidity with a succulent mineral tension before displaying a kiss of phenolic bitterness. The wine continues to uncoil and reveal additional layers of complexity over the long, lingering, food-friendly finish.     Cartology means the study of maps or charts and the wine itself can be seen as a vinous map or tapestry of the Cape. It’s intended to be a picture of the Cape seen through the lens of her old vineyards in a given vintage. The cuveé is composed of parcels of mature dryland bushvines of heritage grapes, namely Chenin Blanc (93%) and Sémillon (7%). The Chenin comes from parcels in the Skurfberg, Perdeberg, Upper Blaauwklippen, False Bay and Tygerberg. The Sémillon comes from the old La Colline block in Franschhoek.

    The 2022 Cartology is whole bunch pressed with no sulfur added until mid-winter with five months in tank on the fine lees. It has a very pure bouquet with yellow plum, egg whites and candle wax. This unfolds beautifully in the glass. The palate is well-balanced with a lively opening, citrus-fresh with orange rind and lime. Alheit mentioned how difficult it was to obtain the acidity, but I think he achieved it here. Excellent, even if I don't consider it the best Cartology ever made. Drink 2024 - 2035.

Medium-bodied and with 13% alcohol, the palate is fresh, clean and mineral driven with a subtly spiced chassis before displaying a food-friendly finish that will benefit from another year in the bottle.     Friuli, in the far northeast of Italy, has a reputation for making the country's best white wines. Winemaker Justin Bubb explains, "The key to this region is the difference in diurnal temperature. In the growing season the days are very warm but the nights freezing. This allows a nice, long ripening and wonderful aromatics for the white wines".
    From a 30-year-old site in San Martino al Tagliamento, near Pordenone, the vineyard sits at the base of the Alps and the soils are a mix of clay and alpine gravel from alluvial deposits.

    Etna in north-east Sicily is better known for its reds than whites, but the best examples of the latter, made from the local grape Carricante, can be spectacular, somewhere between a Burgundian Aligoté and a top Soave in style. This is totally unoaked, but draws richness from six months of lees’ ageing. Stony and intense, with notes of lime, fennel and lemon juice, steely, palate-cleansing acidity and a mineral tang. Best drunk with the Mediterranean sun on your face, but it’ll cheer you up in winter too.

    Les Bruyères is single south facing Arbois site planted on Triassic clay soils, with a rich vein of blue marl running through it. While the site is one of the warmest Stephane works with, the wines from here tend to maintain a firm backbone of structure and salinity that ensures harmony on the finish.

    The low-yielding biodynamic Savagnin grapes for these Vin Jaunes are hand-picked and the juice fermented in steel tanks. The mostly clay soils give wines of higher acidity (whereas limestone gives less acidity and more minerality), and strong backbone. After the primary fermentation the wine is part-filled (around 85%) into old barrels (228 lt. usually) and a 'flor' yeast veil or 'voile' develops on the surface of the wine, protecting it from oxidation and adding complex aromas and flavours to the wine. The barrels are stored in a cool but 'airy' cellar (not underground) for around 6-7 years so the dryer atmosphere causes the evaporation of water and therefore concentration of flavours and reduction of the wine volume. In fact, usually only 620ml. (the size of a Vin Jaune bottle) remains from a litre. This is very expensive wine to make, as not only is there a huge volume loss, but often some barrels need to be culled.

    Chateau Chalon is no doubt the greatest site in the Jura for making Vin Jaune, the Grand Cru if you will, and produces wines with a touch more finesse than the other single site Vin Jaune in this collection.

    Vin Jaune is a very small percentage of the winery's production, as they only make some 7,000 bottles (clavelin) of it per year.     La Mailloche has a gentle east aspect and very degraded soils of Liassic clay. Another wine with good firmness and seductive weight with some nice bitterness.

    Same as with the Les Bruyères Vin Jaune, the bottle of the 2016 La Mailloche Vin Jaune had also been open for two weeks, but in this case, the wine was pristine and there was no noticeable oxidation from the contact with air. The wine kept an alcohol level of 14.5% and was singing, with a spicy and salty nose that made me think of French charcuterie (saucisson!), quite rare, even if by then I was already quite hungry. It's elegant and fine-boned. It's more and more evident than La Mailloche is a great terroir capable of producing different styles of wine. Drink 2024-2044.

    The 2016 Les Bruyères Vin Jaune, from Trias soils, was a more open, larger wine, with more notes of smoke and peat but with finesse and freshness. The bottle we tasted from had been opened for one week. It showed unusually delicate, fine and elegant, deep, complex and nuanced. It’s like white ouillé wine from this same terroir, but it doesn’t have the exuberance and it’s not a large wine. It has a very tasty, almost salty finish. Drink 2024-2040.

    The En Spois plot is at the top of the slope on clay and Triassic blue marls, along with some limestone influence, planted between 1993 and 2000. Given the youth of the vines and the exposed plot, the Vin Jaune from here is often elegant and approachable, and a great introduction to these fantastic single site wines.

    The 2019 Les Bruyères Chardonnay is flintier, more rustic, more reductive with the classical bitter twist in the finish. The Trias soils always seem to give this wine a spicy Jura twang, and 2019 was a good year for the clay soils. It should develop nicely in bottle. Drink 2024-2030.

    A frisky, bone dry Gruner Veltliner that shows an energised tension.

    The Ott family has been producing wine since 1889 in the region of Wagram in Lower Austria, just to the East of the triangle of Kremstal, Kamptal and Wachau. The estate has around 28 hectares of vineyards located around Feuersbrunn and Engabrunn and Bernhard Ott now runs the domaine since taking over the reigns from his father in 1995. The vineyards are farmed according to biodynamic principles and 90% are planted to Grüner Veltliner with the remaining 10% being Riesling.
    Brilliant pale straw colour with a faint tinge of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Red apple skin and lime aromas are intermeshed with hints of quince, green apple and slatey mineral notes. Zingy lime and green to red apple fruits dance over a gentle quince, wet slate and mineral back drop. Frisky acidity with a bone dry and racy finish that shows plenty of energised tension.
    Drink over the next 2-3 years.
