There's only one 350-liter barrel of the 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot, but the resulting wine is lovely, revealing aromas of pear, orange oil, nutmeg and clove, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless palate. Unfortunately, I imagine securing even a bottle or two will be a considerable challenge.

1x 350 litre barrel, unracked, from Les Fairendes. The oak is quite marked at the moment but there is easily enough fruit to cover it. A rumbustious approach with a gorgeous volume of fruit plus of course the oak backing. That will be cleaned up before bottling and this will be excellent. Drink from 2026-2033.

A dry, racy, animatedly fruity Riesling.

From the Schloss Johannisberg team in the Rheingau, this dry Riesling is sourced from select plots near the 50th parallel.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with flashes of green to the edges and a watery hue. Lime, red apple and orange blossom scents sail out of the glass followed by some delicate honeysuckle and slatey mineral notes. Delicious lime, pear and red apple fruits meld into a subtle honeysuckle, orange blossom and mineral slate back drop. Racy acidity with a long, dry animatedly fruity finish.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.

The 2023 Idig Königsbach Riesling VDP.Grosse Lage is deep, ripe, pure and intense on the nose that reveals concentrated fruit intermingled with saline notes. Full-bodied, intense and dense in its texture, this is a compact, saline and very mineral, still tight and crunchy yet stimulating Idig with fine tannins and a long, intense and sustainable finish. 12% stated alcohol. Diam 30 cork. Tasted at the domaine in January 2024. Drink 2025-2060.

For now, the 2023 Riesling Königsbach Idig Grosses Gewächs is faintly citric on the nose. However, the palate sprays with lemon and fizzes with brightness and vivid juiciness, evoking a rushing brook, running over mossy stones, cooling, pure and rapid. Everything here is alive with citric verve, leaving such a gorgeous, long citrus savor. The 2023 is wonderful and so pure. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2060.

Intensely flinty and expressive on the nose like a young Chablis Grand Cru, this great Pfalz dry riesling very slowly unwinds on the palate. Gigantic power and energy are pressed into a sleek silhouette, with an Amalfi lemon freshness that’s off the scale. How can you not be moved by the almost endless finish of this great masterpiece of minerality? From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.

From 34-year-old vines on tertiary limestone soils. the 2023 Ölberg-Hart Königsbach Riesling VDP.Grosse Lage is deep, pure, flinty and particularly smoky on the intense and complex, distinctively mineral nose. The wine is pure, saline and tensioned on the palate yet also reveals ripe and dense as well as juicy fruit with a fine and persistent mineral structure and lingering salinity. This is a young but complex GG from Königsbach. 12% stated alcohol. Diam 30 cork. Tasted at the domaine in January 2024. Drink 2026-2055.

The 2023 Riesling Königsbach Ölberg-Hart Grosses Gewächs comes from the core parcel of the Ölberg on calcareous marl. Yeasty funk on the nose, for now, obscures the fruit. However, the palate is bright, lithe, vivid and citric, with a beautiful concentration and supple, smooth, cooling depth. There is an excellent combination of profound freshness and supple, slender mouthfeel. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2050.

Complex herbal aromas are interwoven with intense Amalfi lemon fruit and a very subtle flinty character that gives this stunning Pfalz riesling GG an electric vitality. The 2023 Vogelsang Neustadt Riesling VDP.Grosse Lage is from pure Muschelkalk soils and opens with a pure yet intense and mineral as well as sur lie-scented nose of very fine Riesling berries. Round and elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, pure, saline and crunchy Riesling whose style is clearly aligned with the Pinot Noir. This is based on vines planted in the early 1980s and a very small part of very young vines from 2019. 12% stated alcohol. Diam 30 cork. Tasted at the domaine in January 2024. Drink 2028-2060.

The 2023 Riesling Neustadter Vogelsang Grosses Gewächs is grown on Triassic limestone, rising up to 320 meters and benefiting from cooler winds at night but facing due south. Just a touch of spice, reminiscent of cumin seed, appears on the shy nose. The palate is slender and traces a central spine of citric brightness that is luminous and seems to sink deep into the soil. It is strait-laced, lemony, taut, bright, vivacious, pristine and pure. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2050.

The striking nose of lemon curd pulls you inexorably into this masterpiece of northerly riesling elegance, from a region where warmth and generosity prevail. Christmann's 2020 Vogelsang Neustadt Riesling Grosse Lage is the first release of this steep cru that the family bought three years before. The wine opens with a coolish and lime-fresh bouquet of crushed stones and lemons. It is remarkably cool and fresh for the vintage, which comes through on the palate. Here, the wine shows super-ripe and intense fruit, whereas the coolish and saline limestone terroir comes out only on the finish with fresh and lemon-scented acidity and long, mouthwatering salinity. There are fine tannins and bitters on the aftertaste. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in November 2022. Drink 2027 - 2047.

Very bright and uplifting nose with delicate dried-flower aromas. Lots of depth and structure, but also very polished. The 2020 Idig Königsbach Riesling Grosse Lage offers a pure, chalky, fresh, concentrated and iodine- and lemon-scented nose representing the limestone terroir of the cru as well as the warmth of the vintage. The 2020er Idig GG, as it is referred to on the consumer label, presents a beautifully smoky and floral nose of anise, cassis, jasmine, licorice, and herbs, as well as a hint of camphor. The wine proves superbly zesty and elegant on the comparatively light-weighted yet complex palate. The finish is super long and focused, despite more weight and presence coming through, especially with airing. The overall balance remains on the fresh and lively side, and we would opt to enjoy this beauty rather in its primary phase of development. Drink 2023-2030.

The 2020 Ölberg-Hart Königsbach Riesling Grosse Lage offers a clear, pure, fresh, saline and really classic Riesling bouquet that is clearly influenced by iron notes as well as the ripe and concentrated Riesling berry. If you’re a Barolo fan, then here’s a dry riesling for you! The first impression is silky and suave, but then the massive structure - including tons of fine tannin - asserts itself. The 2020er Ölberg-Hart GG, as it is referred to on the consumer label, captures one’s attention with some beautifully refined and aromatic notes of almond cream, herbs, spices, candied grapefruit, anise, and Conference pear. The wine develops great juicy presence which gives it depth and complexity, while the finish is more restrained but also zesty and spicy. It proves still compact but the overall complexity at play is superb. There is a little bit more presence and intensity in the very long finish, so that we would opt to enjoy it rather in its youth. Steen is of course the old South African name for chenin blanc. This comes from an old vine parcel. Au naturale winemaking of course, from one of South Africa’s most notable winemakers, and one who was part of a revolution for avant garde and premium wine from the country.
High toned green herb, floral and appley aromas and flavours, a good deal of saline nuttiness and wheatgerm savouriness. It’s very concentrated and decidedly savoury, preserved lemon but with a huge, oatmeal savouriness to taste and chewy, powdery-minerally feel. Great intensity and yet control. Outstanding. Aromas of petrol, straw and various white orchard fruit are complemented by lush but punchy flavors that conclude in a mildly rustic that displays solid depth and persistence. A completely different aromatic profile presents notes of petrol, rosemary oil and white-fleshed fruit scents. There is notably better density and volume to the attractively textured medium weight flavors that display fine length on the balanced finale. The 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet Village remains the largest of Alex Moreau's cuvées at 50% of total production, despite losing some land through the ending of fermage agreements It has a fresh bouquet with orange blossom and pithy pear scents, a little peachiness coming through with time. Smoke and petrol nuances add breadth to the aromas of rosemary oil, pear and soil tones. There is impressive volume to the dense and seductively textured medium weight flavors thanks to the abundant amount of dry extract that imparts a sappy quality to the lingering, powerful and balanced finale. Cartology means the study of maps or charts and the wine itself can be seen as a vinous map or tapestry of the Cape. It’s intended to be a picture of the Cape seen through the lens of her old vineyards in a given vintage. The cuveé is composed of parcels of mature dryland bushvines of heritage grapes, namely Chenin Blanc (93%) and Sémillon (7%). The Chenin comes from parcels in the Skurfberg, Perdeberg, Upper Blaauwklippen, False Bay and Tygerberg. The Sémillon comes from the old La Colline block in Franschhoek.

The grapes were hand sorted and whole bunch pressed. The resulting juice was very lightly settled with no additions and wild fermented in either cements eggs, clay pots, foudres or old barrels of various sizes. After fermentation the wine was kept on lees for around twelve months, then rested in tank on fine lees without fining for a further six months prior to bottling.

Poised and linear, the finish wonderfully long.

La Combe; a tiny hamlet above the village of Rotalier is home to the larger-than-life “Fan Fan” Jean-François Ganevat. Jean-François came back to run the family estate in 1998 after ten years working Burgundy and he combines his passion for the Jura terroir – here ideal for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir - with a staunch defence of Burgundian techniques; low yields and most recently biodynamic methods for which he has now gained Demeter certification.

In addition to the ‘Estate’ wines there are, since 2013, a group of wines made from grapes purchased from around the region and in others, all are grown by their vigneron friends to their standards, so organic or bio-dynamically farmed and tended. They pay very high prices to get the quality they want. Each of these necogiant wine are made on the property by Jean-François and his small team; from grapes into wine, and have the same Ganevat precision, levity and exquisite texture despite the differing origins of the grapes.

Kopin Pierres Bleues is a blend of 75% Chardonnay and 25% Pinot Gris from Beaujolais. Fermentation occurs in a tronconic wooden vat, semi-carbonic macération with natural yeasts, no punch downs or pump overs, not filtered and nothing added.

A scrumptious dry Italian white with a river stone like mouth feel.

Villa Antinori Bianco is a historic wine from the Antinori family, first produced by Niccolò Antinori in 1931. The label and production philosophy, focused on representing the wine's origin, have remained largely unchanged. The grapes are destemmed, delicately pressed, and the must is fermented and matured in stainless steel tanks until bottling.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a faint greenish tinge to the edges and a watery hue. Delightful pear and red apple scents sail through the nostrils followed by some lime, subtle quince and wet stone notes. Scrumptious pear, red apple and lime fruits are delivered with plenty of intensity over a back drop of fresh herb infusions and wet stone. River stone like mouth feel and a dry finish of ample length that’s quite moreish.

It has exuberant aromas of dried pineapple, apricots and dried herbs. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, saline and concentrated, with a long, savory finish. A blend of encruzado and bical with 20% from an old white field blend. 30% is fermented and aged in used barrels and the rest in stainless steel. Incredible value. Drink now.

A blend of encruzado, bical, malvasia fina, cerceal – an exotic array of varieties, though apt in Dão and from older sites.

A chewy, waxy number with lemon oil, preserved lime, some lime pickle and dill notes, touches of sea spray, peanut, pickled ginger and brine. Quite a bit of flavour and pucker to texture, a good energy, a gastronomic wine in some respects, where more is happening than just refreshment factor. Plenty of charm in that respect, it would be great on a degustation or similar. Drink 2025-2030.

A gorgeously shaped Pinot Grigio that shows impressive intensity.

Friuli, in the far northeast of Italy, has a reputation for making the country's best white wines. Winemaker Justin Bubb explains, "The key to this region is the difference in diurnal temperature. In the growing season the days are very warm but the nights freezing. This allows a nice, long ripening and wonderful aromatics for the white wines".
From a 30-year-old site in San Martino al Tagliamento, near Pordenone, the vineyard sits at the base of the Alps and the soils are a mix of clay and alpine gravel from alluvial deposits.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Lifted pear and red apple skin aromas drift through the nostrils followed by some lime, faint dried honey and wet stone notes. Delicious pear, red apple and lime fruits are delivered with impressive intensity over a delicate dried honey and stony mineral back drop. Stéphane Tissot is a tireless and vigorous promoter of individual sites and natural wines. He brings technological experience from his work in Australia and South Africa, and combines this with his ruthless yield reduction philosophy and very serious 'small batch' winemaking which is carried out as naturally as possible. Tissot plants mostly on clay and limestone, all sites are farmed biodynamically and yields are kept low, averaging only 30 h/l per hectare. Ferments are allowed to commence naturally and the still wines are bottled without filtration and little or no SO2 is added across the board. Vibrancy and fruit presence is a signature across all his wines. Given Stéphane is constantly experimenting and obsessively seeking improvements; he is at the forefront of the Jura revolution and produces terroir-driven wines of depth, intensity, interest and undeniable quality.

The low-yielding biodynamic Savagnin grapes for these Vin Jaunes are hand-picked and the juice fermented in steel tanks. The mostly clay soils give wines of higher acidity (whereas limestone gives less acidity and more minerality), and strong backbone. After the primary fermentation the wine is part-filled (around 85%) into old barrels (228 lt. usually) and a 'flor' yeast veil or 'voile' develops on the surface of the wine, protecting it from oxidation and adding complex aromas and flavours to the wine. The barrels are stored in a cool but 'airy' cellar (not underground) for around 6-7 years so the dryer atmosphere causes the evaporation of water and therefore concentration of flavours and reduction of the wine volume. In fact, usually only 620ml. (the size of a Vin Jaune bottle) remains from a litre. This is very expensive wine to make, as not only is there a huge volume loss, but often some barrels need to be culled.

Chateau Chalon is no doubt the greatest site in the Jura for making Vin Jaune, the Grand Cru if you will, and produces wines with a touch more finesse than the other single site Vin Jaune in this collection.

    Other Reviews....
Vin Jaune is a very small percentage of the winery's production, as they only make some 7,000 bottles (clavelin) of it per year. It's a scarce and rare wine, which, from the best terroirs, shows vibrant and complex, with power and finesse. That is the case of the 2016 Château Chalon, which has great concentration, even in a lighter vintage, and reflects the more elegant profile of the Lias soils and keeps the citrusy aromas and flavors. It's fresh, expressive, floral and herbal, with character, incisive and pungent. The aging potential of these wines has been proven over the years, and he is experimenting with longer élevage... Drink 2024-2045.

Les Bruyères is single south facing Arbois site planted on Triassic clay soils, with a rich vein of blue marl running through it. While the site is one of the warmest Stephane works with, the wines from here tend to maintain a firm backbone of structure and salinity that ensures harmony on the finish.

This is the latest edition of Vin Jaune W that was a massive success with the first release over a decade ago. The late great whisky producer in Burgundy, Michel Couvreur, has made some fine whiskies aged in Tissot’s Vin Jaune barrels and this wine reverses the concept. Fine Vin Jaune aged in whiskey barrels for almost 7 years. The Vin Jaune is so powerful that the nuances of whisky only adds a gentle facet.

Intensely flavoured and texturally voluminous Pinot Grigio.

Texturally full and concentrated, the palate is engulfed with ripe fleshy pear and red apple fruits. Notions of honeysuckle, musk and spice linger across the back half. Brisk acidity lending freshness to the long, mouth filling finish.

Pale lemon and lime. The bouquet is quite elegant with a little generosity of fruit behind. This is perfectly balanced, not trying to be what it isn’t, with a lovely energy of fruit behind. There is a light reductive nose which Mathis finds typical of this vineyard. Drink from 2025-2028.

Fresh, cool and restrained aromas of various white orchard fruit, lemon-lime and a whiff of carnations precede succulent, round and delicious medium-bodied flavors that possess plenty of punch on the borderline tannic, clean and dry finale. Though not especially structured, this will need at least a few years of cellaring to round out. Drink through 2025+.

For over four generations, the Catena family has grown vines in the foothills of the Andes Mountains in Mendoza, Argentina. Laura Catena, great-granddaughter of winery founder Nicola Catena, is currently at the helm. Produced from a blend of four vineyards harvested at different times, this excellent Chardonnay is matured for 10-12 months in French oak barrels of varying ages.

Rich and concentrated yet fresh with a wonderfully textured, stony like feel.

Brilliant pale straw colour with highlights of green around the edges and a watery hue. Elevated white peach and pear scents stream out of the glass complimented by hints of dried honey, wet slate and an oyster shell like minerality in what is a Chablisique like sniff. Rich and concentrated yet stony like in it’s feel, the palate is layered with delectable white peach, pear and lime fruits. Wet slate, infusions of fresh herbs and a smoky oyster shell like minerality ensue. Wonderfully textured and fresh it has a long wet stone laced finish that also has a dash of spice to it.

The Adrianna Vineyard, known as Catena Zapata’s "Grand Cru", lies at an altitude of about 1,500 meters and it's divided into several unique parcels, each with distinct soil profiles, microclimates and characteristics that contribute to the complexity of the wines.

The White Stones parcel is one of the most distinctive sections of the Adrianna Vineyard. This parcel gets its name from the large, white oval stones scattered throughout the soil. These stones, composed of alluvial deposits, play a vital role in the vineyard’s drainage and heat retention. The white stones reflect sunlight and store heat during the day, which helps maintain steady ripening conditions for the grapes, even in Mendoza’s high-altitude, cool-climate environment. This, combined with the calcareous subsoil, contributes to the parcel's hallmark minerality and precision. The wines from this parcel are known for their purity, focus, and long aging potential.

    Other Reviews….
The 2022 Chardonnay Adrianna Vineyard White Stones hails from a cool and slightly dry vintage in the Uco Valley. Sourced from a small gravel and limestone plot in Gualtallary, it displays a green hue in the glass. Its aromas feature lime, green apple and herbs, with subtle notes of ginger and acacia. Dry, nimble and refreshing, the chalky texture enlivens the slightly lean palate, with a long-lasting, fruit-driven finish. A high-altitude wine, the 2022 growing season brought an extra layer of freshness to this Chardonnay. Drink 2024-2034.

This is always minerally and incisive and very different from White Bones. This is more classic chardonnay, with lots of freshly squeezed lemons, wet stone, flint and seashells. Brisk acidity on a medium- to full-bodied palate. Tense and intense, but this is acid-driven with a fine touch of salinity that lingers at the end. Drink or hold.

At almost 5,000-feet elevation in the cool of the region, growing deep in rocky soils, the light-bodied 2022 Chardonnay Adrianna Vineyard White Stones features compellingly grippy texture that excites the palate. Like its sister, White Bones, it sees 12-16 months in used French oak barrel, coaxing a light touch of spice from the wood. Herbal, earthy, and textural above all, it sings in buzzy acidity and yet retains a refined mouthfeel of length and complex angles, digging deep into ethereal flavors of lemon rind and wet stone. Drink now through 2042. This is incredibly delicious. Drink 2025-2042.

Benjamin Benoit is fast becoming one of the Jura’s most exciting voices. Working in Pupillin with traditional methods and minimal sulphur, his site-specific wines offer a precise, elegant expression of Jura terroir. Cellier Saint Benoit sets a new standard for quality in the region.

Sourced from Savagnin vines primarily in Les Chambines, on marl soils typical of the Jura. The wine was a barrel selection with preference given to the most restrained and tightly wound example, considered best suited for extended sous voile maturation. Aged for over nine years in a single cask stored in the domaine’s custom attic (rather than humid cellars), allowing the veil of flor to develop under more oxidative and dynamic conditions. This longer aging exceeds the legal minimum of six years, encouraging greater salinity and tertiary development. Bottled unfiltered from a single cask.

    Other Reviews....
The last Vin Jaune of Benjamin's father was bottled in March 2025, a sublime 2014 Vin Jaune, with notes of smoke and peat, some iodine and tons of textbook morel mushrooms and spices. This had a much longer élevage than the requirement from the appellation. It aged in a warm cellar and therefore with more oxidation, evaporation and concentration and comes through as really powerful. Drink 2025-2045.

This Chardonnay is grown on Triassic marl soils in the south of Pupillin at 335 metres altitude, on a plateau above Les Charots. The 0.5 ha vineyard is home to 65–70-year-old vines planted by Benjamin’s grandfather. La Marcette ripens earlier than neighbouring sites due to its exposure and elevation, producing concentrated fruit with lower yields. The wine is whole cluster pressed and aged in neutral oak barrels. The resulting expression is broad-shouldered yet structured, shaped by its sunny disposition and deep-rooted vine age.

    Other Reviews....
The 2022 Chardonnay Arbois Pupillin La Marcette unfurls with white peach, blossom, green apple and a tropical slice of melon. Medium- to full-bodied and generously concentrated, the 2022 boasts remarkable intensity. A solid backbone of acidity helps to retain vivid freshness. From a 0.28 ha parcel of northwest-facing vines on steep (30%) slopes of classic blue marl at higher elevation than Chambines. The 70-year-old Savagnin vines were planted by previous generations and are now farmed for a topped-up, non-oxidative (ouillé) style. The wine was whole cluster pressed, fermented, and aged on lees in a single old 228-litre barrel, then bottled unfiltered. The blue marl soils contribute intensity and salinity, resulting in a complex, site-expressive wine.

While he still manages the family estate, Cezar started his own venture in 2015, and is already one of the most exciting young prospects in Spain.

Having a deep understanding and access to some of the best vineyards Bierzo has to offer, Cezar focuses on preserving purity and freshness, highlighting the promise Mencia has in the right place when made with attention to detail. Cezar is structuring his line-up of wines in Burgundian fashion, making a broader appellation wine, a village wine, along with several single vineyard offerings. Winemaking is similar on all wines, with grapes partially destemmed and fermented in open barriques, before spending 12 months in old barrels without any racking or top ups before bottling the following winter. These are wines that are not just great examples of Bierzo Mencia, but wines that truly stand shoulder to shoulder with the finest from any region or country.

This blend of 96% sauvignon blanc and 4% sauvignon gris has volume, balance and tropical influence. Medium-bodied with citrusy acidity. Succulent with plenty of ripe lemon character on the palate and a focused, flavorful finish with excellent length.

Always a brilliant white from this estate, the 2025 Château Couhins Blanc comes from clay and limestone soils and is based on 96% Sauvignon Blanc and 4% Sauvignon Gris. More stone and white fruits as well as chalky minerality and mint define the bouquet, and it's medium-bodied on the palate, with a concentrated mouthfeel, bright, racy acidity, and a great finish. It shows the riper style of the year while bringing chiseled, racy acidity, and it will keep for 30 years or more.

A solid effort, shaped by selective harvesting, whole cluster pressing and ageing in larger format barrels with lees stirring. The last grapes were picked on 9 September. The aromatic profile leans toward gooseberry and pink grapefruit with faint herbal nuances. The palate reveals a gently yeasty, lees–influenced character: more textural than lactic. There is fresh structure and moderate complexity including white orchard fruit and a subtle hint of sweetness towards the finish. A mellow white, easy going, well suited to the table, though lacking the tension and depth of more compelling whites of the vintage. Drink 2026-2036.

The 2024 Couhins Blanc is a regal, elegant wine. Readers who want to enjoy a world-class dry white that is still affordable will delight in this gorgeous, sculpted offering from Couhins. Slate, chalk, mint and white pepper drive through a core of citrus-inflected fruit. Couhins Blanc is one of the finest dry whites of the year. If recent past vintages are any indication, it should also be a steal. Drink 2026-2032.

A mineral edge is chiseled into the green limes and gooseberries. Bright acidity gallops through the medium-bodied palate, delivering a bone-dry, mouthwatering finish.

Bright and racy, the 2024 Château Couhins Blanc reveals tart citrus, crushed stone, mint, and sappy green herbs. Made from mostly Sauvignon Blanc with a splash of Sauvignon Gris, it's medium-bodied, fresh, and focused, showing a more mid-weight, racy style.

Bright and alive, this zings on the palate with crisp lemon and lime, bitter grapefruit and gorgeous freshly picked peaches. Hints of topicality add sweetness - pineapple and mango, which add depth and layers to the expression. I really like this. Great energy and appeal. Drink 2025-2036.

One of the superstars of Barsac, the wines are typically noted for their elegance and style rather than weight and richness. At 38.5 hectares in size, Coutet is one of the largest vineyards in the region, with plantings consisting of 75% Semillon, 23% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle. Fermentation takes place in barrel of which 50% are new with further ageing in oak for 18 months.

The 2025 Coutet is a little more backward on the nose than usual, less giving. But there is wonderful purity of fruit, lemon thyme and clementine scents, touches of white flower. The palate is medium-bodied with a viscous entry, playing with Coutet's trademark thread of acidity that emanates from the limestone soils. Quite minerally and spicy on the aftertaste, this is a marvellous Barsac from the Baly family. Drink 2031-2060.

The 2024 Coutet was picked over six tries although the final ones were not used with 134 g/L residual sugar this year. It has quite an intense bouquet with beautifully defined lemon thyme and light peach aromas. Composed and persistent on the finish, this is a superb Coutet. Drink 2028-2055.

Frederic Burrier and his family own the historic Chateau de Beauregard and the small but equally important Chateau du Clos, both based in Pouilly, along with half ownership of Domaine de la Rochette based in Milly-Lamartine. Frederic is a staunch supporter of the wines of Pouilly, and led the commission into the possibility of premier crus for appellation. Winemaking is very traditional, and while he has tried newer methods and equipment, Frederic prefers the results he gets by crushing the grapes prior to using his Vaslin hydraulic press. As of 2020 vintage, many of the plots worked in Pouilly are now classified as premier cru.

Moderate wood sets off notes of exotic aromas that include pineapple, lychee, melon and touches of both white and yellow-fleshed fruit. The dense, powerful and serious medium weight flavors possess an opulent mouth feel before culminating in noticeably warm finish. Once part of the original Doisy estate founded in 1704, Chateau Doisy Daene takes its name from Jacques Emmanuel Daane, an owner in the late nineteenth century who combined his surname with that of Doisy following the estate's division. After changing hands several times, the property was acquired in 1924 by the Dubourdieu family and gradually rebuilt and expanded to its current 18.2 hectares. The Barsac vineyard, located close to Chateau Climens, is planted predominantly to Semillon with a smaller proportion of Sauvignon Blanc, on red sand, clay and limestone soils. Alongside its Sauternes, the estate is notable for producing one of the appellation's earliest dry white wines, bottled as Doisy Daene Grand Vin Sec, as well as the rare and highly selective l’Extravagance de Doisy Daene in exceptional vintages.

The 2025 Doisy-Daëne has an intense nose with plenty of botrytised fruit, wonderful delineation, quite nuanced this year, with quince and light white peach scents intertwined with saffron. The palate is well balanced with a keen line of acidity, so pure and quite minerally, yet your senses are just awash with that layered botrytised fruit that lingers in the mouth. What a stunning Barsac. Drink 2032-2070.

A brilliant, gorgeous Barsac, the 2025 Château Doisy Daëne is based on 88% Sémillon and 12% Sauvignon Blanc that will spend 10 months in barrel followed by nine months in stainless steel before bottling. Honeyed peach, fresh apricot, flowers, and toasted bread nuances all shine on the nose, and it's full-bodied on the palate, with a concentrated, layered mouthfeel, beautifully integrated acidity, and outstanding length. Checking in at 13.5% alcohol with a pH of 3.95, it's a blockbuster in the making.

The 2017 Doisy-Daëne is so compelling. Rich and ample in the glass, the 2017 just blossoms with a bit of time. Candied apricot, exotic white flowers, mint, hazelnut and chamomile notes confer richness. The 2017 is deep, powerful and wonderfully resonant from start to finish. As with its next door neighbour, this benefits from limestone soils in what is a late-onset botrytis vintage for the sweet wines of Bordeaux. It means it has some fresh, fine, blooming acids, just scraping through the mid-palate and balanced by gorgeous notes of candied ginger, white flowers, honeysuckle, jasmine and a seam of freshness. Once part of the large Doisy estate founded in 1704, Chateau Doisy-Vedrines was named after one of the early owners of the estate after Doisy was separated into three properties in 1851. Chateau Doisy-Vedrines is now owned by the Casteja family who also own Chateau Trotte Vieille in Saint-Emilion and Chateau Batailley in Pauillac among their portfolio. The vineyard is planted to 80% Semillon, 15% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Muscadelle, and along with their grand vin they produce a second wine under the Chateau Petit Vedrines label. Interestingly they choose to label their wines as Sauternes, rather than Barsac as with the two other Doisy properties.

Pale gold with vibrant edging, starts with concentrated and intense clove spices, luscious apricot fruit, opening to show juicy, sculpted slivers of steel and lime juice. A return to form for this excellent Barsac wine after the succulent but unbalanced 2022. Great stuff from this legendary Dubourdieu property, although once again the yields are extremely low and the character is more concentrated than you find in vintages like 2021. Ageing starts with 10 months in oak barrels, followed by 9 months in stainless steel tank before bottling.

Full, rich colour. Lifted and pure on the nose with floral, honeyed and white-fruit notes. Lovely weight and volume on the palate, the bitter-botrytised note adding freshness. Rich but not cloying. Lingers on the finish. Drink 2027-2045.

The 2025 Doisy-Védrines was picked between September 17 and October 13 over 11 days and three tries. It does not have the purity and intensity of the Doisy-Daëne, well defined, but it just needs a little more expression at this stage. The palate is bright and viscous on the entry, a little fatter than Daëne as usual, with commendable length on the finish. It is just seeking a bit more complexity at the moment; indeed, a second bottle delivers a little more tension. 140 g/l residual sugar. Drink 2030-2055.

The 2025 Doisy-Védrines is an infant. Orchard fruit, citrus and floral notes are nicely lifted. This shows notable power and textural resonance. I imagine the 2025 will drink well with a few years in bottle, by which time some of the more incisive contours will have softened. That said, this is a Barsac that shows exceptionally well with age. Drink 2035-2065.

White peach, honeyed flowers, caramelized orange, and minty nuances all define the 2025 Château Doisy-Vedrines, a rich, seriously impressive Sauternes in the making. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has a balanced, layered mouthfeel, beautifully integrated acidity, and a great finish.

Juicy and lively, this has a real kick to it with the acidity at the fore – tangy lemon and pineapple before slowly creamy, vanilla, apricot and pear come in. I like the style, it’s upfront and focused, less overtly sweet than some bit with real energy and grip. Great stuff here, so approachable, so enjoyable on a summer’s day. Mouthwatering and alive. Still a little spiced and angular but this will soften. Drink 2027-2046.

The 2023 Doisy-Védrines doesn't quite deliver the complexity of the Doisy-Daëne on the nose, though it opens nicely with aeration to reveal lemon sherbet, saffron and light tangerine aromas. It is not as immediate as other Sauternes in this vintage, but it does exude elegance. The palate is well balanced with a very pure, tensile opening. This seems to be a less "fat" Doisy-Védrines compared to other vintages, possessing a fine bead of acidity. It’s lightly spiced with a tang of marmalade and quince toward the finish. This is a noble Barsac in the making. Drink 2027-2060.

The 1975 Yquem has long been the standout of the decade, and whilst a few years ago it was neck-and-neck with the 1976, now it seems to be pulling ahead. This has a showstopping bouquet with wonderful intensity and delineation. Displaying Seville orange, quince and blood orange, with hints of stem ginger and Japanese yuzu, it is difficult to drag your nose away from the glass. The palate is brilliant: stunning balance and precision, razor-sharp with almost penetrating acidity that effortlessly offsets the richness and intensity of this fully-mature Sauternes. There's so much energy. This is a revivifying Yquem at peak and unequivocally the best example of '75 that I have tasted. Tasted at the château. Drink 2025 - 2045.

A wine that has reached its peak, the 1975 d'Yquem offers up a candied bouquet with aromas of quince, apricot, saffron, orange peel, curry and incense, complemented by a medium-bodied, balanced and tense palate with a concentrated core of fruit but slightly phenolic currently, concluding with a long, beeswax-inflected finish. As the only Sauternes property classified as Premier Cru Superieur, drinking a bottle of Chateau d'Yquem is an experience unlike any other. Situated in the epicentre of prime sweet wine production in France, their unique position and wealth of soil profiles allows d'Yquem to produce wines of enormous complexity with consistent accumulation of botrytis often in years when others struggle.

The 2023 Chateau d'Yquem completes a remarkable trio of vintages for this storied estate. It sits at a precise intersection of styles: possessing the crystalline purity of the 2021, yet anchored by the opulent power of the sun-kissed 2022. As always, d'Yquem is defined by its peerless balance. The 2023 manages to be simultaneously crisp and delicate, yet immensely concentrated, a vintage destined to reveal its full grandeur over the coming decades.

    Other Reviews....
With 153 grams per liter of residual sugar—placing it among the 10 most concentrated vintages in the château’s history—the 2023 d'Yquem ranks among the finest wines bottled here under Lorenzo Pasquini’s direction. It unfurls from the glass with a complex, vibrant and remarkably pure bouquet of pineapple, guava, mango, confit citrus, beeswax and spices. Full-bodied, dense and concentrated, it combines formidable depth with perfectly judged control, built around a fleshy core of fruit, framed by lively acidity and a crystalline texture and culminating in an endless, refined and ethereal finish. Yquem’s natural power is here masterfully harnessed by the vintage’s freshness and tension, revealing an aesthetic of precision and vibrancy encountered only in the estate’s greatest years—made all the more remarkable by the fact that the château now achieves even higher levels of concentration than a decade ago, without any perceptible increase in sweetness on the palate. Drink 2026 - 2076.

The 2023 Yquem, a blend of 70% Sémillon and 30% Sauvignon Blanc, contains 154 grams per litre of residual sugar—less than the 2022. As usual, the 2023 was matured in 100% new oak, mainly French, with a small percentage from Austria. The nose is so seductive that it should come with a warning sticker. Pure and mellow, it offers beguiling scents of wild honey, quince jelly, almond shavings and that signature hint of saffron destined to accentuate with age. It displays wonderful definition, though it does not have the “aromatic drama” of the previous vintage. The palate has exquisite balance and poise that belies the depth of this Yquem, though it is less exuberant, less ostentatious than the 2022. It is really the umami sensation that defines the 2023, how it caresses, almost soothes the grateful taste buds, vanilla and flecks of white chocolate lingering on the aftertaste. This will probably drink a little sooner than the 2022. If the 2023 does have a fault, it’s that it is so flattering in its flush of youth that it will be difficult to resist. Sublime. Drink 2030-2090.

Perfect aromas carry through to every milliliter of this wine, showing intense orange peel, honey, butterscotch, saffron, smoke and peat, with hints of coffee and dried apples. Full-bodied but weightless and silky, with an excellent balance of fruit, sweetness and spices. Some peanut brittle, dried oranges and lemons at the end. I can’t get over how wonderful this is now, but it can age forever. 154 g/L residual sugar. Drink or hold.

Power, freshness, depth, after the extremes of 2021 and 2022, this walks the line between the two, exceptional, mandarin, quince, mirabelle plums, white truffle, fresh fruit and confit fruit, a vibration of slate and steel, opulent but slices closed on the finish. The botrytis came early and quickly in 2023. Francis Mayeur in final vintage as consultant, after many years as inhouse winemaking team, Lorenzo Pasquini director. 154g/l residual sugar, 3.85ph, harvest September 14 to October 11.

The perfume bursts with a bouquet of flowers, candied lemon peels, pineapple, white peach, orange, mango, vanilla, saffron, and anise. It is a lively, bright, energetic vintage for Chateau d'Yquem. Rich, intense, opulent, sweet, and palate-coating, yet all of that is balanced by its explosive, racy acidity that provides lift, energy, and length. The finish begins slowly, building, intensifying, and expanding, hitting all four sides of your palate with its unique spicy character and its counterbalancing blend of perfectly ripe, sweet tropical fruits and refreshing acidity. The harvest is done in four passes, mostly during the second and third. About 60% of the harvest was included in the Grand Vin. In short, 2023 Château d'Yquem ROCKS! Drink from 2030-2100.

Situated in the epicentre of prime sweet wine production in France, their unique position and wealth of soil profiles allows d'Yquem to produce wines of enormous complexity with consistent accumulation of botrytis often in years when others struggle.

The 2022 Chateau d’Yquem is a vintage shaped by extremes—the driest and hottest year on record at the estate, with an exceptionally early start to the season. Noble rot developed late, and a dramatic shift in mid-October led to rapid concentration, resulting in Yquem’s most opulent wine since 1945, with 160 g/L residual sugar. Despite the richness, meticulous blending and shorter elevage ensure remarkable freshness and balance in this extraordinary Sauternes.

    Other Reviews....
A blend of 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc, the 2022 d'Yquem is a strong candidate for the title of wine of the vintage. Exhibiting a remarkably delicate, complex and energetic bouquet of rose, confit citrus, exotic fruits and orange marmalade, it's full-bodied, dense and deep with a pristine balance enhanced by a fleshy core of fruit, bright acids and beautiful, gastronomic bitterness and dry extracts that segue to a long, ethereal, delicately perfumed and refined finish. Lorenzo Pasquini and his team have perfectly understood the vintage by privileging the third tries, fully exposed to Botrytis cinerea, in the blend, bringing density and precision along with an energetic and splendidly balanced interplay of bitterness and sweetness. Residual sugar levels reach 160 grams per liter, marking it as the second-highest since the iconic 1945 vintage. Drink 2034-2074.

The 2022 Yquem is a blend of 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc with 160 g/L residual sugar and a total acidity of 5.39 g/L. It is the first certified organic vintage for the estate and has the lowest level of total sulphur ever: 234 g/L, high within the sphere of wine but comparatively low for Sauternes. The 2022 was aged for 24 months in new barrels that underwent slightly less drying than those used for red wines in order to retain some green tannins. Given the growing season, the 2022 Yquem has a surprisingly understated bouquet that demands coaxing. Scents of orange pith, passion fruit and quince are exquisitely defined, a hint of chamomile dancing around in the background. The palate is medium-bodied. Given the high level of residual sugar, what is surprising is that the 2022 does not seem a weighty or texturally unctuous Yquem, yet there is an intensity and concentration that is arresting. Vivid flavours of clementine, wild honey, quince and tangerine that effortlessly combine. The acidity almost nonchalantly counters the sensation of residual sugar, so it feels less than it actually is, the scintilla of salinity toward the finish tempting you back for more. This is a marvellous and quite cerebral Yquem for which patience is required. Drink 2030-2100.

A perfect Yquem again after the 2021, which is fresher and more refined than the 2022. The perception of sweetness is super-knit. Lots of botrytis, with turmeric, saffron, cream, roasted meringue, pine nuts, spices and dried mangoes. This is a powerful, seductive and lush wine. Ornamented and richer this year than 2021, but there is so much charm and harmony. Long and spicy, with a hint of petrol at the end. Wow. The second most concentrated Yquem after 1945, according to the winemaker. About 160 grams of residual sugar. So approachable now, but better in five or six years. It will live forever.

Combining incredible power, sweetness, and opulence with racy acidity and a touch of bitterness on the backend offsetting all the rich, honey-slathered fruits, it takes only a single sniff and sip to discern that this is one of the great vintages produced by Chateau d'Yquem. That says a lot, considering all the fabulous vintages the estate has crafted. The palate showcases its wealth of honeyed fruits alongside Indian spices and a vibrancy found in no other sweet wine. The wine envelops your palate, teeth, and gums leaving you with a zesty finish that lingers for a full 60 seconds and more! This is a legend in the making! Like all great vintages of Chateau d'Yquem, you can enjoy this with pleasure in its youth, with its sweet, ripe fruits showcasing a unique sense of honeyed purity, or you can save it for your grandchildren.
