    ABV: 55.1%

Inspired by the The Giant’s Causeway, a few short miles from the Bushmills Distillery, 'The Causeway Collection' seeks to elevate Bushmills' releases through ‘Rare Cask-finishes' and ‘Uncommon or unprecedented casks'. The 2008 Jupille Casks is a case in point - a special edition that was distilled in 2008 and bottled in 2021 exclusively for the French retailer, Les Comptoir Irlandais, aged in Jupile Casks, a very obscure French oak from the 5,000ha Jupille Forest near the Loire Valley, which is tiny when compared to to the half million hectares dedicated to the more common Limousin oak. The wood is dense with a tight grain. Its profile is said to impart pink rose and vanilla. Pair that with the honey, melon and pear of the Bushmills malt and you have a melody of flavour that is sure to please. Non-chill filtered, bottled at cask strength 55.1% Alc./Vol. Very limited stocks.

Bushmills 10 Year Old Single Malt Irish Whiskey (700ml)
    County Antrim, IRELAND
    $77. 99
    Bottle
    $935.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Bushmills is a truly unique Single Malt from the oldest licensed whiskey distillery in the world,  first licensed in 1608. The pure water used in Old Bushmills flows over the basalt rock which is visible in the spectacular formations of the world famous “Giants Causeway.” The malt is entirely unpeated and thus the smokiness associated with Scotch malt is entirely absent from Bushmills. In addition to this, every drop  is carefully distilled three times for purity and smoothness (most malts are distilled only twice). Bushmills is then left to mature  for a minimum of ten years in select bourbon oak casks and Oloroso sherry casks. The result is a smooth, rich Single Malt with overtones of vanilla, honey and sherry.

Other reviews... 'Deep amber colour. Medium-bodied, with a silky mouth-feel. Some sweet citrus, mocha and vanilla flavours with floral hints of heather and lilac. Soft, elegant finish with an expanding warmth.'
-Gold Medal, The Worlds Spirits Championships, 1995.

'Nose: Very lightly scented with nutty ice cream and sherry. Palate: Rich dried fruit and chewy toffee, quite a mouth filling shock after the very delicate nose. Finish: Fudgy. Comment: After years of being overshadowed by its older wood finished cousins, this 10 year old is finally coming into its own. Rating: 8/10 -  www.whiskymag.com

Bushmills 16 Year Old Single Malt Irish Whiskey (700ml)
    County Antrim, IRELAND
    $165. 00
    Bottle
    $1980.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

This bottling, from the world's oldest licensed distillery (1608), is matured in three types of oak casks: American Bourbon barrels (which typically lend vanilla notes to the whiskey), Spanish Oloroso Sherry Casks,(contributing rich fruit and nuts). Finally it is transferred to old port casks for the last few months of its maturation. These casks bring sweet berry notes and a hint of ruby red to the final whiskey.

Other reviews... The most northerly of Northern Ireland’s distilleries, Bushmills ages this spirit in bourbon and oloroso casks before finishing in port wine casks. The sweet notes of fat, ripe blueberries, plum flesh, and dusty, dry warehouses sketch out the nose. It lands on the tongue dry but piquant, then the fruit swarms all over it; blueberry, black currant, and apple, with hazelnut, chocolate pralines, black pepper, and spice. This was once the pick of the range, but the port influence seems feistier than older bottlings and I miss how smooth this used to taste.

... Nose: Big, fat and sweet. Butter and raisins. Forms slowly with pineapple, stewed fruits, malted milk, coconut, cereal, cocoa, orange. Big (but balanced) oak. Palate: Round and rich. Sweet dried fruits, brazil nut, coffee, soft malt, popcorn. Good grip. Oak in balance. Finish: Long. Hazelnut. Comment: Plenty of oak but the spirit holds its own. An extra dimension to the 10 Year Old.  80 points - David Broom, whiskymag.com

Nose: a touch of sulphur detracts somewhat from the fresh fruit delivery. Still get pomegranates, though! Taste: seismic waves of spicy fruit, juicy and salivating in effect; Finish: that haunting of poor sherry just takes the edge off the fun... 88 points

Bushmills Madeira Finish 21 Year Old Single Malt Irish Whiskey (700ml)
    County Antrim, IRELAND
    $330. 00
    Bottle
    $3960.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Bushmills 21 year old once again adorns our shelves amongst an increasing range of Irish. Production appears to have remained the same, with the whiskey aged nineteen years in Oloroso sherry and American Bourbon casks before marrying in Madeira 'drums' for its final two years. We were lucky enough to receive a 50ml sample. The first sniff evokes superbly pure scents of fruit pastries, vanillan oak, warm butter and fruit compote. Those notes are reflected in a silky, melt-in-your-mouth delivery where the wine input contributes hints of fruit jam and Madeira cake then dries with prunes, creaming soda, fruity dark chocolate and hazelnuts. It's a light bodied and breezy malt, yet full of flavour at the same time - a contradiction that makes you wonder how they pull it off. With some serious length to boot. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Bushmills' sumptuous magnum opus spins aromas of sultana, brown sugar, walnut oil, date slice, chocolate-covered cranberries, leather gloves, and a hint of espresso. The dark, crepuscular mystique continues in the syrupy mouthfeel redolent of forest honey, banana bread, nuts, browned butter, sultana, date, and blackberry. Utterly beguiling, the Madeira finish works wonders here, right through to the last moments of the smooth, sweet finish. A must-try for all. 96 points - whiskyadvocate.com

"As Veruca Salt would say, "I want it now!" With the intensity of the sweet fruit and chocolate notes on the nose, could you blame her? The trail mix filled dram also has deep malt flavors with the texture creamy, not cloying. Towards the finish, the whiskey becomes dry and spicy. A comparable Scotch whisky would be almost double the price so snatch up what you can." 97 points - distiller.com

...oaky and drying, with complex notes of toffee, dark chocolate, toasted nuts, caramel and a spicy finish. 93 points - wineenthusiast.com

(n24.5) this remains something of a Chinese puzzle on the nose: just how do all those different notes, sometimes soft and rounded, sometimes hard and angular, many of them fruity, manage to intertwine...yet never clash? And why can you never detach one without another clinging onto it. If Sherlock Holmes tried to solve it, this would be a three pipe conundrum...except the use of tobacco would ruin the experience. Just marvel at the greenage and physalis, the flaked vanilla and liquorice, the ulmo honey and hickory...so much else besides; (t24) as melt-in-the-mouth as a whiskey can be: amazingly juicy barley offers the cutting edge and lead while a plethora of delicate sugars dissolve on impact; the fruit is solved as a perpetual mixed salad; (f23.5) this is where i am really impressed. Despite all the complexity of the nose and delivery, at the finish the Bushmills trademark flaky vanilla and delicate barley comes through...a signature unique to one distillery in the world; (b24) an Irish journey as beautiful as the dramatic landscape which borders the distillery. Magnificent. 95.5 points - Jim Murray Whisky Bible 2013

    ABV: 46.3%

Predominantly composed of six to seven-year-old spirit, Dingle's new core bottling comes matured in PX Sherry (61%) and Bourbon (39%) first fill casks. A fairly mainstream but well-executed Irish profile showing nice integration in a soft, creamy delivery with low-key fruitiness through the middle, laced with vanilla wafer biscuit and delicately oily malt. The finish dries with hints of citrus and wood shavings. 46.3% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

    $2160.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

The third release in the brand's Cask Finish limited edition series starts out as the standard Knappogue Castle Bourbon cask matured malt then finishes in red wine casks from the esteemed Italian winery, Marchesi di Barolo. Around 1500 bottles are available globally. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Baked plum desserts, sweet cherry, star anise, and dark vanilla on the nose, with an enticing freshly toasted spiciness. Caramel, plum, pomegranate, and rawhide shoelaces shift into a concentrated fruitiness as allspice and pepper well up, yielding a sweet core of graham crackers, marshmallows, and creamy vanilla, with hints of chocolate. Bruised fruit and throbbing spices characterize the finish on this laudable example of wine finishing. 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com

"This is a wonderfully complex single malt from Knappogue Castle. The red wine barrel influence very nicely complements the grain of the whiskey, bringing in notes of red currant to pair with vanilla, almond, chestnut, and treacle. Pour this one neat and enjoy." 91 points - distiller.com

Limavady Single Malt Irish Whiskey (700ml)
    IRELAND
    $109. 99
    Bottle
    $1319.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

A new whiskey brand from Northern Ireland that currently makes just one product: A single barrel, single malt whiskey, triple distilled from Irish barley, finished in ex-bourbon and PX sherry casks. Former Bushmills and Dublin Liberties Distillery Master Distiller, Darryl McNally is behind the project that launched in 2021. He wants to revive his family’s heritage of making whiskey in Northern Ireland’s County Antrim. His family actually owned the old Limavady distillery before Prohibition, which dates back to 1750, though there’s no real connection between then and what’s being turned out since the recent revival. The new whiskey is bottled in partnership with WhistlePig distillery. It sports a generous bouquet that vacillates between fresher, ripe citrus and sawn oak notes and richer, Bourbon-like aromas of vanilla, ripe peach and fig-laced chocolate. It's more distinctively Irish on the palate with an oily delivery that's well rounded and weighty through the middle stages; Suggestions of dried peach and shortbread are followed by a sprinkling of pepper and light astringency before hints of Toblerone bar, jaffa and vanilla come through the aftertaste. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Aromas of minerality, vanilla fudge, zested lime, barley sugar, rosewater, and white pepper. It spills sweet flavors of butterscotch, barley sugar, and candied orange peel over the tongue, pursued by a stealthy rise in pepperiness, and ending with a throat-coating finish of baked orange, burnt sugar, and Kit Kat. This is small batch, triple distilled merriment. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Jonny McCormick 2021

...Golden amber color. Aromas and flavors of peach, starfruit, spiced caramel, butter cookies, and hints of grapefruit with a velvety, vibrant, dryish medium-full body and a peppery, very complex, very long finish conveying impressions of toasted scones with honey, baked apples, roasted nuts, and toasted sourdough. A complex Irish Single Malt with big impact and big elegance. Gold Medal. 94 points - tastings.com

...Rich and racy on the nose, with lots of deep sherry character — plus an ample, sandalwood-driven earthiness. Aromas of sesame and brown butter give the whiskey a modest sweetness, with notes of hemp rope filling in the cracks. The palate is chewy, with more sesame and notes of crushed honey grahams, then a more bready pretzel dough character emerging. Mixed floral notes give the whiskey a certain perfumy character, which pairs fairly well with the winey notes up front. The finish is rather dusky, focusing on the whiskey’s well-roasted grains and becoming increasingly savory over time. Notes of tea leaf and lemongrass kick in after awhile, making for an odd — but certainly interesting - bunch of flavors to contend with. - drinkhacker.com

Method and Madness French Limousin Oak Cask Finish Single Malt Irish Whiskey (700ml)
    IRELAND
    $130. 00
    Bottle
    $1560.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

One from the Method & Madness series distilled at Midleton. These whiskeys are produced on a far smaller scale that the distillery's other flagships like Jameson and Redbreast with experimentation and innovation being primary. Other finishes include Acacia wood, Virgin Hungarian oak, Mulberry and cherry wood. This one's matured in Bourbon barrels then finished in French Limousin oak. 46% and un-chill filtered.

Other reviews... Irish Distillers experimented with 14 year old single malt (sourced from elsewhere, as Midleton Distillery doesn’t make it), matured in bourbon barrels with a parcel finished in French oak. The nose is nutty, with granola, shortbread, pecans, and a smattering of ground pepper. Smooth flavors of ice cream cone, blossom honey, vanilla, ginger, pepper, and long-lasting spices. Toffee, roasted nuts, cinnamon, malt, and blackening spices carry from the late palate into the finish.

    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
Tasting note: Deep topaz. Shy but builds to medium intensity on the nose: Fruit cake, vanilla and honey drizzled weetbix... then a touch of rose water or Turkish delight? Flavourwise, dry and genteel with plum, prune and lady's handbag (potpourri or rose scented talc?) alongside gingerbread and dried fruits. Ends softly tannic, thinning out before the vanillas close. Odd. All malt, but doesn't really taste like it. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... superb, lush delivery with peppers pounding, backed by some excellent tannins. Mocha and gingerbread meet the fruitcake full on in midstream... unmistakably malt from the old Bushmills distillery.
91 points - Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2019

One of the most striking-looking new releases around, this bone-jangling, sepulchral, triple-distilled whiskey was once entombed in oloroso sherry butts. A nose of baked apple and sultana, rolled marzipan, sesame seeds, and roasted spices. Smooth tasting, with dark fleshy fruits, mixed peel, chocolate, walnut; the taut spicy middle section dies back to baked oranges. A dignified finish, with chocolate and nutmeg at the death. Ingest in peace. 40% Alc.Vol. 89 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Jonny McCormick (Spring 2018)

Lacken 1.1 edition is a French exclusive, designed by Waterford's Mark Reynier. The whisky was distilled from barley grown in County Wexford by Francis Kehoe at his Lacken farm located two miles east of New Ross and the River Barrow on the Wexford-Kilkenny border. Thanks to its favourable environment, the barley is of very high quality - it benefits, in fact, from a sandy, well-drained and sloping territory. Master Distiller, Ned Grahan has created a beautiful blend that included x Bourbon, new American oak, French oak, Port and Marsala matured components in the mix. Expect a malt of great complexity with fruity notes and a deliciously textural mouth feel. 50% Alc./Vol.

This is Ireland’s first organically certified whisky made using organic, biodynamic and heritage low yield barley that goes back in time before the modern agrochemical industry. Distilled in 2016, grain was sourced from John Mallick, Paddy Tobin, Alan Jackson, Pat and Dennis Booth, Jason Stanley and Trevor Harris. Maturation took place in 42% first-fill American oak, 17% virgin American oak, 23% premium French oak and 18% Vin Doux Naturel wine casks. Bottled non chill filtered at 50% ABV as part of Waterford's 'Arcadian Series'. Collectors should note this is a first edition, so likely to go fast.

Other reviews... Satsuma peel, aromatic florals, and a low level of aromatic spices, then fruit syrups and a hint of olive oil on the nose: It’s clean and bright, with plenty of sweetness. The citrus, toffee, and salted-caramel sweetness of the palate are disrupted by a shockwave of pepper, leaving tangy peels, hints of nuts, and sour gooseberry in its wake before a finish of citrus and sweet barley.

Other reviews... Nose: a generous bed of sweet grains, with some fruity notes on top (lemons and oranges, gooseberry, maybe a hint of mango) as well as a nice chalky side. I like the vibrant sweet and sour mix. Mouth: plenty of orchard fruit, with some very light tropical touches. Apples, oranges, a whiff of pink grapefruit. The third expression released in the very successful 'Steamship' series, Bushmills Bourbon #3 Char Cask Reserve is the result of a long-standing relationship with the Master coopers at Louisville, Kentucky who reserve some of their best custom-charred x-bourbon casks to mature this unique Irish. The degree of char inside a cask can have a significant impact on a whisk(e)y's flavour, allowing the spirit to cycle deeper into the oak extracting wood-derived flavours. If the charring is done judiciously, the drinker is presented with a myriad of toasty, savoury, barbequed aromas and flavours.  In this case, expect subtle notes of toasted oak, spices and crème brûlée with a long, rich and smooth finish. 40% Alc./Vol. Big one litre format. The series marks the 125th anniversary of the maiden voyage of the SS Bushmills, celebrating its maiden voyage in the 1890s. It was the distillery's own steamship that delivered whiskey to new markets around the world, travelling as far as Philadelphia and Yokohama, returning with refilled casks of rum, fortified wine and Bourbon. Bottle
    $1980.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%
Independent bottlings of Irish whiskies are uncommon. This one is from the Scottish-based Cadenhead company.

Tasting note: [tasted froma 40ml sample] Pale gold. Subtle fruity aromas, build in intensity with spicy pear / cinnamon / clove and rich vanilla augmented by substantial spiciness in the mouth. Creamy, fruity, lingering aftertaste. Robustly styled Irish. 46% Alc./Vol.

Cadenhead's notes: "The richness of the first sip wraps itself nicely around your palate, the soft tones seem to go on and on as the malt unfolds to deliver honey and cream with soft vanilla notes, some sweet apple like flavours is complemented by a soft gentle hint of sweet spices."

A Connemara originally marketed as a duty free exclusive. Turf Mór reportedly leans towards the earthy end of the peaty spectrum. Remaining true to its Gaelic name, which translates as “Big Peat”, this is 50ppm, and flavour-wise best described as “Islay meets Ireland”, retaining the approachable taste of Irish whiskey while delivering the big smoke associated with Islay malts. 46% Alc./Vol.

By now, most readers will be acquainted with Connemara, and so the concept of smokey Irish whiskey will not be new. Produced at the Cooley Distillery, Turf Mor (meaning "Big Turf") which is the second of Connemara's limited edition 'Small Batch' offerings turns the volume up a notch. It has around 55 ppm of phenols which is the well into the Ardbeg-Laphroaig-Lagavulin range making this the peatiest Irish whiskey yet.

Awarded a 'Gold Medal' and 'Best in Class' at the IWSC in 2011.

Tasting note: Very pale straw appearance. Opening sniffs detect sweet manure-like scents - cow pat combined with sweet soot together with underlying hints of caramel and choc fudge. The farmyard notes slightly retreat on the second pass. Entry is discreet and soft. Mid palate explodes on the tongue delivering a semi sweet fusion of caramel, cocoa and elastoplast. Well balanced and pleasantly warming spices add depth. Concludes bone dry and fresh with the cocoa and elastoplast flavours fading into the lengthy aftertaste. Earhty and robust. Another compelling addition to the Irish whiskey scene.58% Alc./Vol.

...This is the first time I ever detected dung (albeit subtly) in a whiskey — and only on the nose, thankfully. It’s curiously intriguing. The style of peat used, along with the youth of this whiskey, has a distinct impact of the whiskey’s flavor. It’s sweet and smoky, which works well. Throw in some bacon fat, diesel oil smoke (like at a boat dock), anise, ginger, honeyed malt, barley, lime, and pear. Underneath all that peat lies what seems like a fairly young whiskey, because it is very brisk and vibrant, but not excessively so. Bonus points for distinctiveness. 88 points - www.maltadvocate.com, (Vol. 20, #1) Reviewed by: John Hansellsize>

The 'Distiller's Edition' was originally developed for the French market.

Connemara is a wild, mountainous region on the west coast of Ireland, lying between the Atlantic Ocean and Loughs Corrib and Mask. The peat bogs of Connemara are major fuel sources to the region and have played an important role throughout Irish history as an energy source and in the production of whiskey. However, as many of the distilleries in Ireland were located alongside a canal, the transport and use of coal in distilleries became more efficient than peat. This temporarily killed the tradition of drying malted barley over peat fires in the production of whiskey. Managing Director of Cooley Distillery, David Hynes and chairman John Teeling have resurrected this traditional Irish custom. Noted whisky writer, Michael Jackson commented of Connemara “The revival of rustic peatiness adds a whole new element to today’s palette of Irish whiskey flavours…Lots happening. Chimney pots of smoke. I love this whiskey.” (Whisky Magazine Issue 15) Connemara Peated Single Malt was placed fourth in the Irish Whiskey category at Best of the Best 2003 and received a double gold and Best of Irish at the San Fransisco World Spirits Competition 2004.

Dingle Celtic Series Samhain Single Malt Irish Whiskey (700ml)
    IRELAND
    $189. 99
    Bottle
    $2279.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50.5%

Launched in late 2022, 'Samhain' is the first release in a new range of limited-edition whiskeys in Dingle's Wheel of the Year series. Marking the beginning of winter and the Celtic new year, Samhain is one of the four main seasonal fire festivals, named after the belief in the cleansing powers of fire. Traditionally, after sunset, Samhain commenced with towering bonfires set ablaze in pairs and livestock were driven between them, believing that the smoke possessed cleansing powers. The liquid is matured in first-fill Bourbon casks before a long finish (2 years) in first fill Muscatel casks. 10,000 bottles are on offer. Elliot Hughes, Managing Director at Dingle Distillery, comments: “We are excited to reveal the Dingle Samhain Single Malt Whiskey, inspired by the ancient Irish celebration of Samhain. Celebrated in Ireland for over 2000 years as well as annually in Dingle and across the land, this release distils a core part of our heritage. This is the first whiskey in our new Wheel of The Year series and is steeped in the traditions of times past that we intend to honour and pay tribute to. We are proud to introduce this latest edition to our Dingle family and believe this limited-edition is one that whiskey lovers and collectors won’t want to miss.”

For those curious: The Celtic Wheel of the Year is divided into eight periods, likewise, the new Wheel of The Year series is set to launch eight editions, following the rhythm of the seasons, equinoxes, and solstices. In ancient Ireland, farming was the epicentre of people’s lives and hugely dependent on the seasons, thus the turn of each season was celebrated with great reverence – and still is to this day.

Dingle's sixth batch release is composed of malt matured exclusively in Tawny Port Casks. While the wine gets you an extra layer of fruit sweetness, it feels like it's compromised the primary Irish character. 46.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Founded in 2014, The Shed Distillery delivers the first whiskey from the western province of Connacht in over a century. This bottling marks the first edition in their Rare & Exclusive Collection. Galánta translates as “Bravery” and “Excellence”. Every drop is distilled by Brian Taft from 100 per cent Irish malted barley, and aged in a mix of x Bourbon and Marsala casks. Maturing for the last seven years, the 2021 includes the entire 2014 production - a total of 8400 bottles. “We’re very proud,” says proprietor, Paul Rigney, “it has taken a big effort and a lot of waiting. Our distiller Brian Taft is our hero, our quiet rock star. He is very shy but brilliant at his job.” The 2021 edition was delayed due to Covid, so they will release the 2022 edition later in the year. 46% Alc./Vol. Extremely limited stocks.

Notes from the producers... Galánta is a lovely, subtle whiskey. There is no added colour so it is relatively pale. The aromas are of toasted wood, coffee and dried fruits. There is a lovely ripeness on the palate with sweet toffee apples and pears, a touch of honey and caramel, with an excellent finish.

Tasting note: Located in the rural town of Drumshanbo, the Shed Distillery was founded in 2014 by PJ Rigney. One of the more anticipated Irish releases of the year, their single pot still whiskey is triple distilled from Irish barley and Irish Barra oats. Maturation takes place in a combination of x-Bourbon and x-Oloroso Sherry casks. Pale gold in colour, the aroma presents youthful but soft aromas of gobstopper, pear drops and dried fruits - in particular, apricots. A medium bodied, fruity, juicy, clean spirit that finishes creamy, genteel yet vibrant, showing pitch perfect sweet-dry balance and hints of Bounty bar through the aftertaste. Summery and delicious. 43% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

The Egans have been making whiskey since the 1800s and did so up until the 1870s when they lost out to the multinationals. This represents a rebirth of the P&H Egan brand after family members set about resurrecting the label in 2013. Two whiskies are on offer - a single malt and a single grain. Both mark auspicious beginnings.

Tasting note: A 100% pot still Irish whiskey matured in American oak. Pure gold. Beautiful nose – opens with a floral-soft mix of ripe orchard fruits, buckwheat pancakes, vanilla cream and beeswax. Surprisingly concentrated with superbly pure flavours of apple, pear and honey, framed by vibrant spices and a gorgeous, oily, creamed-up finish that melts in your mouth. Excellent length. Very satisfying, solid Irish. 47% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The nose is superb, with oat and pecan flapjack, cocoa powder, nutmeg, star anise, and caramelized brown sugar. Golden syrup laced with strands of citrus swim within a smooth, thickly textured malt. A rich sweetness spills over, unctuous with sweet honey and nuts over a base layer of spice. Confident, self-assured, expressive whiskey.

One only to sell. Note some bruising and minor damage to the box.

After thirteen years in x bourbon barrels, this Irish gem spent a year in a Mizunara oak puncheon. Sourced from the Ariake cooperage in the Miyazaki prefecture of Hokkaido Island, these barrels are made using indigenous Japanese oak. It's notoriously expensive, difficult to work with and the wood itself is prone to leaking. To top it off, the trees are harvested at around 200 years old (compared to around 75 for American/European oak). The obvious question is "Does Mizunara oak give a distinctive flavour to whisky?" The consensus is that Mizunara matured whiskies tend to offer a more definite coconut aroma. Other sources suggest the wood contributes attractive sandalwood notes. Some bottlings are clearly more successful than others. This one from Glendalough has received high praise from all quarters. Comes non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Ripe pit fruit, especially apricot and peach, Quaker oats, and comb honey aromas are boosted by aromatic fragrances and sandalwood. Cantaloupe, mango, and papaya are followed by chocolate and cocoa, which pair beautifully with the muted citrus. Fragrant spices really add shape and contribute to a sublime balance, with spicy chocolate, coffee grounds, and menthol to finish. A most impressive leap forward in quality and complexity. 46% Alc./Vol.

Double Gold, Best Single Malt Irish Whiskey & Best Irish Whiskey at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2015.

Until recently, the number of distilleries in Ireland could be counted on one hand, a mute reminder of an industry that once numbered in the hundreds. Glendalough is part of the contemporary revival of the Irish distilling scene, set up by five friends from Wicklow and Dublin with a mutual love of Irish whiskey and a deep passion for craft spirits. The group had massive early success at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2015, (considered one of the world’s most prestigious spirits competitions, showcasing the very best of some 1,500 liquors). In all, nearly 50 bottles won awards, with Glendalough's 13 year old taking out the top prize for the Irish category. Subsequently, whisky writer Jim Murray has rated Glendalough's cask strength Mizunara finish expression a whopping 96 points.

Tasting note: [tasted from a near empty bottle]. Deep bright gold. Beguiling; superb bouquet, exotic even by Irish standards with kumquat jam, fig paste; more vanilla oak and poached pear after exposure. Gorgeous purity. Fantastic freshness and texture; again orchard fruitiness repeats. Terrific length. Dries with hints of clove and just goes on and on. This is all about sublime mouthfeel and balance. Must try Irish. Non chill filtered. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... fresh dates sprinkled like a Shrove Tuesday pancake, with sugar and lemon... and a touch of lime, too... superb texture: the barley bristles with oaky spice while the light oils help get the spices established; dies slightly as the oak dries vividly and toffee kicks in; a touch milky too... a rather beautiful whiskey, spilling over with spices. A few tired casks evident though.

Golden amber color. Delicate, creamy, fruity spicy aromas of cola, cherry chutney, and white toffee with a satiny, lively, fruity medium-to-full body and a warming, interesting, medium-length alpine honey lozenge, peppery spices, nuts, and minerals finish. One of the first brands to be trademarked, Kinahan’s acquired international recognition back in the 1800s, partly for their unconventional approach to maturation. Founded in 1779 and later dubbed “the Pioneer of Irish Whiskey”, it wasn't long after that the Lord of Ireland ordered several casks, each marked with an "L.L." to identify the customer. That branding is maintained in the current presentation. The Kinahans ceased production in the early 20th century when Irish whiskey sales plummeted, but in 2014 the brand re-launched on Trinity Street taking advantage of a massive global resurgence in the category. Debuting around 2015, this release is part of their award-winning Heritage Collection, made from 100% malted barley and produced in small batches of up to thirty hand-selected first-fill x-bourbon casks. The Kinahan's project is still young so it's unlikely they've included their own whiskeys here. The source remains undisclosed, but whoever made the selections obviously knows how to knock up a decent malt. Drinkers have been impressed, one describing it as "...pretty close to my favourite classic Redbreast but with more chocolate and tobacco."  Other whiskeys from Kinahans have been rated highly by the likes of Jim Murray and Whisky Advocate. 46% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Notes from the producers... The nose has zesty blood orange, toasted caramel, hazelnut, cigar, tobacco, cocoa, while the finish has bitter chocolate, coffee, green pear, ripe peach.

Other reviews... The Twin Wood release is the result of refilling this triple distilled single malt from its bourbon casks into oloroso casks for a 21-month finishing period. This produced a wonderfully dry nose of macadamia nut, pepper, and baked apple crumble. Fruity sweetness is maintained through the finish. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Jonny McCormick, 2017

...The latest limited release from this brand. This whiskey spent most of its life aging in a bourbon barrel and then spent 9 months in sherry casks. (“Twin wood” is synonymous with “finishing.”) This one’s triple distilled (think Bushmills distillery) and is the first Knappogue Castle to be aged in two types of wood. It’s a very nice whiskey, with an array of bright fruit lying on a bed of creamy vanilla, toasted nuts, marshmallow, marzipan, and powdered cocoa. Excluding the original 1951 Knappogue Castle release (from the long gone B. Daly distillery), this is my favorite of the “modern day” Knappogue Castle whiskeys. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: John Hansell 2011

...Knappogue Castle has always been ‘seen high’ by whisky freaks. For some reason, I had missed this older one. As for what twin wood means, I guess that’s got something to do with Harley-Davidson. Or Ducati. Or Guzzi. Or Norton… (that’ll do, S.) … Colour: gold. Nose: it’s got this metallic/dusty side that screams ‘pure pot still’ and that I did not find in any of the others. Metal polish, herbal tea, overripe apples. The low strength is problematic, though, and believe me I made a looong break after the fab Nectar 27. But what’s in this weakish nose is great. Mouth: oh very good indeed. Even the 40% vol. work. Can you smoke chocolate? Marmalade, mixed marmalade with mint and cloves, ripe gooseberries, pomegranates… All very good. A shame that they bottled it at 40% vol. Murder! Finish: it’s almost long, at this strength. Imagine what it could have been at 45 or 50% vol. Great whiskey (see, I did not miss the ‘e’.) Comments: a very frustrating bottle. Super-great whiskey for sure, but it could have been hyper-great whiskey! Oh, the frustration…  86 points - whiskyfun.com

1994 Knappogue Castle Single Malt Irish Whiskey (700ml)
    County Cavan, IRELAND
    $120. 00
    Bottle
    $1440.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

In the early 1900's, the finest whiskey in Ireland was often sold in casks rather than in bottles. Spirits merchants bought the filled barrels, aged them and bottled the whiskey under their own brand names. In the 1960's, Mark Edwin Andrews, an American with strong ties to Ireland, began buying casks of fine pot still whiskey from the top distilleries in Ireland. He aged them and bottled them under the 'Knappogue Castle' label, named after the castle in Ireland that he owned.

Knappogue Castle 1951, the last of Mr. Andrews’ whiskey that remains available, is a traditional pot still whiskey which means it is made from both malted and unmalted barley. It was triple distilled at the famous B. Daly Distillery in Tullamore and was aged in sherry casks for 36 years making it now the oldest and rarest Irish whiskey in the world. Today, the Andrews family carries on the Knappogue Castle legacy with vintage dated Irish single malt whiskey. For each vintage, a limited number of casks of the finest Irish single malt are selected. Each is distilled with the utmost care one batch at a time. Knappogue is lightly chill filtered and unlike many whiskeys, no artificial colouring is added. Of this whiskey, the Robb Report  said, 'No people on the face of the earth are better versed in the finer points of camaraderie than the Irish - a fact that their genial whiskeys underscore. The 1994 vintage of Knappogue Castle, despite its age, is as fresh as the Irish countryside'.

Tasting note: The fifth vintage of Knappogue Castle and the second consecutive one comprised of whiskey from the Bushmills distillery. (The previous three were from the Cooley Distillery.) This one is very clean and quite soft on the palate, with a gentle sweetness throughout (fresh malt, vanilla, and honey). Floral and citrus notes offer a subtle pleasantness throughout. Soft, soothing creamy vanilla finish with hints of confectioners sugar and lightly toasted marshmallow. This is a pleasant, versatile Irish whiskey to have in your bar to serve neat, on the rocks, or in smart cocktails. 40% Alc./Vol. Rating: 85 points

Other reviews... Old gold color. Rich aromas of honeyed raisins, blossoms, and buttery fruit custard pastry with a silky, fruity-yet-dry medium-to-full body and a long, grainy, nut, pepper and dried fruit driven finish. A lush, flavorful Irish whiskey that will shine with cigars.

...Triple distilled and fully matured in bourbon casks, this single malt has a sweet, soft, and inviting nose of crisp green apples, vanilla custard, and lemon butter biscuits. Soft lemon meringue pie on the palate. Sweeter orange breaks through with a little spice on the fringes, then hits its stride with dried fruits and baked apple. A final flourish of spice and candied peel rounds off this excellent whiskey. Value Pick.

    County Cavan, IRELAND
    $160. 00
    Bottle
    $1920.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Aged for 14 years in oloroso Sherry casks and Bourbon barrels. Brilliant gold colour. Opens with attractive drier styled scents of wood shavings, bubblegum and vanilla. Second pass accents apple pie and shortbread as the aroma builds. Excellent concentration and balance, with juicy stewed pear, sweet spice and gobstopper followed by hints of marshmallow in the aftertaste. Ends dry, vibrant, pure and just plain delicious! Non chill filtered. 46% Alc./Vol.

...Perfect for drinkers with a Goldilocks complex, this falls between the lemon-favoring 12 year old, and the richer, sherry finished 16 year old, with a nose of sweet mandarin, tropical fruits, fruit pastries, warm banana muffin, barley sugar, and forest honey. Bold, attention-grabbing flavors of orange, honey, vanilla, dried ginger, pepper, and jam-slathered pastries, with caramel, ground almond, and a tantalizing, zesty grapefruit bitterness toward the end. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Jonny McCormick 2018
