Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners.

    Mosel, GERMANY
    $299. 00

    $3588.00 Dozen

    Closure: Cork

Selbach-Oster has a history in the wine trade dating back 1660, while the current winery was formed in the mid 1800's. Known for producing highly detailed and pure expressions of Riesling, Selbach-Oster have vines planted in some of the greatest sites in the Mosel, including Zeltinger Himmelreich, Schlossberg, and Sonnenuhr; Wehlener Sonnenuhr; and Graacher Himmelreich and Domprobst. Today, Johannes Selbach and his wife Barbara, with the increasing help of son Sebastian and daughter Hannah, manage their vineyards and winery with passion and respect for the estate’s long held traditions. Johannes, like his late father Hans, has continued the use of traditional oak fuder in his cellar, bringing in new large casks every few years. Vinification is carried out in a combination of fuder and stainless steel, in a hands-off manner with no fining, and predominantly with wild yeasts. The focus is on meticulous work in the vineyard with the aim to produce and bring home perfect fruit.

    Other Reviews....
The 2017 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Beerenauslese * is perfectly concentrated and refined on the nose with its aromas of stewed peach, fine botrytis and even slate. Lush, beautifully fine and finessed on the palate, this is a salty-piquant, fresh and highly delicate Beerenauslese with stimulating salinity and citrus fruit. This is a beauty of great finesse and elegance. Bottled with 6.5% alcohol (in 375-milliliter bottles), it's not sticky or sweet at all but is endlessly salty. A beauty. Tasted in March 2019.

This “one-star” BA has a “no-star” counterpart which I did not taste. “They were both very good and would have made an outstanding blend,” said Selbach, “but this lot exhibited a tick more finesse,” so he opted for separate bottlings, of which this one constituted 200 liters. White raisin and apple jelly are accompanied on the nose by prickle of lemon peel and radish, then pick up brown spices, honey, hazelnut paste and mango chutney on a viscous yet buoyant palate, leading to a vibrant, superbly multifaceted and ravishingly sustained finish. Drink 2019 - 2060.

The 2017er Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Beerenauslese * was harvested at a massive 155° Oechsle, i.e. already in TBA territory. It displays an immensely complex nose made of nut paste, raisin, candied grapefruit, mango, smoke, vanilla and bergamot. The wine is superbly aromatic on the palate where it delivers mango, honey, raisin, plum, nut paste, apple jelly and orange jam with remarkable presence and delicacy. The finish proves hugely pure and immensely long. The combination of density and finesse defies all logic. What a great dessert wine in the making! Drink 2027-2067.

The 2018 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Beerenauslese displays an intense but very clear and radiant citrus color in the glass. The nose is concentrated and fresh, with lemon chutney and broken stone aromas. Pure and fresh on the palate, this is a dense, concentrated, rich yet very precise, fresh and elegant BA with a long, crunchy, terroir-driven finish that represents the delicate slate structure of the Sonnenuhr. Still young but not really sweet due to the crystalline acidity structure. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. Drink 2028 - 2080.

This 2018er Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling BA was harvested at approx. 130° Oechsle and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar (approx. 200 g/l). This cask sample offers a gorgeous and clean nose of candied grapefruit, pineapple juice, rhubarb, apricot , melon and honey. The wine is very juicy and sweet on the delicately viscous palate. The finish is quite intense and very long. This BA is still very sweet and juicy, and will please lovers of rich and intense dessert wines. Drink 2028-2058.

Founded by winemaker Samantha Connew, Stargazer has become one of Tasmania's most compelling small producers, crafting wines of precision and quiet intensity from the Coal River and Derwent Valleys. Whether Riesling, Chardonnay or Pinot Noir, each release reflects a meticulous, hands-off approach and a focus on texture, energy and site expression. For many, Stargazer marks the sweet spot between refinement and individuality in modern Tasmanian wine.

The 2025 Single Vineyard Riesling delicately balances between being 'dry' and 'off-dry' (6.7g/L residual sugar), and achieves a remarkable equilibrium between acidity and fruitiness. The Riesling comes from all three blocks of the Stargazer vineyard located in the Tea Tree sub-region of Coal River, planted in 2004, 2017, and 2021, supplemented with grapes from another grower in Campania sub region, planted in 2001. The grapes are carefully hand-picked, destemmed, and then undergo eight hours of skin contact maceration before being pressed and transferred to tanks for fermentation. Fermentation is halted when the ideal sugar-to-acid balance is achieved, and the wine is left on lees for several months, with gentle stirring every two weeks.

    Other Reviews....
The 2025 Riesling is tightly coiled and composed, fresh and floral. Where the Palisander is texturally complex and weighty in its delivery of powerful fruit and focused acidity, this presents an altogether more feathery experience, one that tends to dance across the palate, rather than march. Here, we have lime flesh, lemon curd, white flowers and crushed rocks. It may not be as complex as the Palisander nor as layered, but I find it to be irresistibly detailed, fresh and pleasurable. It's a matter of choosing your preference, really. It's an excellent wine. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2026-2036.

A fragrant and wonderfully perfumed Coal River Valley riesling that shows characters of green apple, grapefruit, yuzu, lime, apple blossom, mineral salts, clover and crushed stone. There are little crushed mountain herb notes that join in on the palate, with a fine, lacy mineral driveline and a swell of green apple, citrus and stone on the back end. Drink 2025-2035.

This wine comes exclusively from Stargazer's own vineyards in the Tea Tree sub-region of the Coal River Valley, where the vines were planted in 2002. The soil here is clay loam with a high calcium content, which results in thicker grape skins and more flavor. The fruit is handpicked, destemmed, and left on the skins for 12 hours before gentle pressing. The juice is wild fermented in ceramic and concrete egg-shaped containers where it is left to age on lees for a further 10 months.

    Other Reviews....
The 2024 Palisander Riesling hails from the Palisander vineyard in the Coal River Valley. The fruit was left on its skins for 12 hours prior to a wild ferment over six weeks in ceramic (60% of the blend) and concrete eggs (the balance) and then left on the lees for 10 months. Aromatically, it leads with candle wax and brine, hessian and straw. In the mouth, the wine is textural and wide, with the impact of the time on its lees wholly evident. This is chewy and full of flavor, with bright acidity (a pH of 3.19 and six grams per liter of acidity) that is mitigated by 0.5 grams per liter of acidity of residual sugar left in the wine. This is sophisticated and sleek, with eminent polish and drive. It's very good. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2026-2036.

Riesling sourced from the Palisander vineyard in Tea Tree in the Coal River Valley and made by Samantha Connew. Pale straw with aromas of green apple, lime and grapefruit with hints of flint, clover blossom, wildflowers, distant crushed herbs, cold chamomile tea, crushed stone, sea spray and ozone. There is just a touch of texture on the palate, which shows a focused mineral line and excellent tension between the inherent citrus and apple fruit tones and the chalky mineral cadence. Lovely stuff; crisp, composed drinking. Drink 2025-2035.

This wine is named after Frédéric Emile Trimbach, who became renowned in 1898 for ensuring a new standard of quality and authenticity for Trimbach. For several generations, the south and southeast-facing Grand Crus of Geisberg and Osterberg in Ribeauvillé have been producing this wine. The vines, averaging over 55 years, yield limited quantities. Alongside the Clos Saint Hune release, this is the estate’s most famous wine.

Luminous straw-yellow. Complex, mint-accented aromas of nectarine, tangerine and powdered stone, plus a hint of licorice. Then bright, juicy and dense, showing outstanding acid-sugar balance and a penetrating juiciness to the stone fruit and herbal flavors. Finishes multilayered and very long, displaying noteworthy clarity and limy cut on the saline finish. Wine lovers everywhere know just how great Frédéric Emile Rieslings can be, but this looks to be a real knockout in the making; I absolutely love this wine’s mineral drive and precision. It pulls off the neat trick of being both very ageworthy and also lovely to drink right now. I was happy to know that my palate was still working after an extremely long day of tasting when I told Pierre that in this vintage of Frédéric Emile I found more of the Geisberg than the Osterberg (in most vintages, the wine is a blend of 60/40 Osterberg-Geisberg, at times even 70/30, but this year it’s more like 55/45). Drink 2026 - 2039.

The lemon-sherbet note here is really beautiful. Then comes a wealth of herbs, ranging from thyme to parsley, with a touch of sea salt, before turning to more floral nuances, such as cherries and almond blossom. The powerful acidity seems to surround the whole mouth and makes this almost like licking a lemon; the unmistakable dryness is all the more enjoyable because of it. Long and very elegant on the finish. Drink now.

Fresh, crunchy and concentrated with precise laser like acidity and a long zesty finish.

John Vickery was a legend of the Australian wine industry and is widely acknowledged as the old master of Riesling. His illustrious career spanned over 50 years at the likes of Leo Buring and Richmond Grove during which time he amassed more than 50 Trophies and over 400 gold medals. He was also responsible for the re-introduction of screw caps with his 1998 Richmond Grove Watervale Riesling.

Although the great John Vickery has left us, his legacy lives on in the wines that bear his name. This is a cracker. Daniel Vollenwieder was part of a pioneering movement of winemakers who returned to Mosel in the early 2000’s, rejuvenating abandoned vineyards. These are some of the oldest ungrafted Riesling vines in the world. The steepness of the vineyards is something to marvel, but they’ve still managed to convert the vineyards to organic practises, recently being certified. Fruit for this wine comes from the best plots in the Goldgrube.

Wonderfully concentrated and tense with zingy mineral laced acidity.

Wilson’s Polish Hill River Riesling is sourced from their oldest vineyards planted over 40 years ago. Its miniscule yields typically produce a wine rich in citrus fruits within a steely structure, tight with lots of minerality. Beneath the iron stained clay lies a bed of decomposing slate and scattered quartz. It’s also not unusual to find remnant pottery and agricultural implements from the Polish Settlers who once lived and farmed the area now planted to this small vineyard.
Brilliant water like colour with a faint greenish tinge around the edges. Lime and citrus aromas leap out of the glass trailed by some green apple, hints of orange rind, wet steel and chalky mineral notes. Delivered with fabulous intensity and tension are racy lemon, lime and green apple flavours. Zingy mineral laced acidity with delicate orange rind and wet steel elements also shining through. Dry and chalky it finishes very long and zesty.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

It's hard to quantify the impact and value of 350+ vintages the Wittmann family have under their belt in their hometown of Westhofen. As part of the 15th generation of ownership, current steward Philipp Wittmann has embraced the organic viticulture ethos started by his father Günter, even taking it one step further by converting their vineyards to biodynamic in 2004. He lays the foundation for wines of exceptional quality through intensive, year-round maintenance, low yields and the uncompromising selection of bunches by hand. These are superb dry Rieslings from this superstar Rheinhessen winery.

Compared to the Brunnenhäuschen, Wittmann's 2023 Morstein Riesling GG is light and clear but also still very reduced in the fresh and mineral, even savory and precise nose, which is still restrained in the fruit. Pure and extremely salty on the palate, with a very firm and grippy structure and an almost dry/drying minerality, this Morstein draws saliva. It seems more austere and sinewy here and now than the Brunnenhäuschen, and it's still extremely influenced by limestone. This is a great and promising wine. Tasted at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in Wiesbaden in August 2024.
In another tasting two days earlier at the domaine, the 2023 Morstein showed a wonderfully chalky, elegantly fruity and balanced nose. Pure and with citrusy freshness as well as chalky salinity, this is a ravishingly fine, elegant and clever Morstein that is light-years away from the abundance and power of the 2000s and early 2010s. This is vibrant and stimulating salty and truly reminiscent of Champagnes from the Côte des Blancs. A magnificent Morstein! Drink 2028-2060.

The 2023 Riesling Westhofener Morstein Grosses Gewächs still flickers with the slightest flinty reduction on its cool nose, but with air, lemon moves in and stays center stage. The palate is just as lemony and immediately projects cooling, moist, chalky depth. The palate is slender, delving deep into that chalkiness. Scented with lemon and bedded on soothing, citric yeast, the finish is totally zesty, precise, strait-laced, pristine and very long. (Bone-dry). Drink 2028-2060.

Nothing is more fundamental to the world than the interplay of light and darkness, and this wine brings that into your glass in a completely compelling way. There’s an incredible intensity to the minerality of this dry riesling. It’s a giant of orginality, but lies at the upper edge of medium-bodied, resulting in a fantastic sense of lightness. Extraordinary focus and precision in the enchanting and totally fascinating finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink from release.

Clear, bright, elegant and fresh, with spicy citrus fruit and a distinct lime and saline note, Wittmann's Westhofen 2023 Kirchspiel Riesling GG starts strong! Elegant, dense and creamy on the palate, it has a zesty character but is also balanced and noble in texture. Pleasantly round, juicy and intense and always supported by its limestone texture, this is an excellent Riesling from Westhofen! The 2023 Riesling Westhofener Kirchspiel Grosses Gewächs comes with notes of lemon balm and chervil, deeply scented and deliciously herbal. The palate gushes with coolness, like a mountain brook over stone, sinking deeper and deeper into the cool limestone with its serene, bright, lemony scent and the merest creamy edge—rather seductive. Pure, ripe lemon zest shines on the finish. (Bone-dry). Drink 2028-2055.

How can a mysterious labyrinth be so delightful? Because at every turn there’s a new aspect of the wine’s beauty. The incredible tension between the flinty and floral aspects of this wine makes it remarkably energetic for a dry riesling with this level of concentration. Then comes an astonishing Amalfi lemon freshness in the super-long and precise finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink or hold.

Wittmann's Westhofen 2023 Aulerde Riesling GG continues the top performances of the last five years. It has a deep, concentrated, fresh and citrusy nose with substantial saltiness and still some reduction, reminiscent of clay, lime and lime chutney, and a dense and tightly woven palate. This is a fleshy, juicy and concentrated, very youthful but elegant and balanced Aulerde with great potential and long-lasting minerality and savoriness, but it's also generous and elegant in its fruit expression. The 2023 Riesling Westhofener Aulerde Grosses Gewächs is made from vines planted in the rich marls Aulerde in 1949 and 1951, at a then-unusual density of 8,000 vines per hectare. Wittmann says that this is the earliest ripening site, yielding tiny, ripe grapes year after year. A touch of mellow, ripe, yellow apple appears alongside gentle lemon on the nose. The palate also has that beautiful yellow apple spice and lovely juiciness and texture. The serene and smooth yet hearty palate radiates coolness. (Bone-dry). Drink 2028-2050.

Bold, compact and concentrated, this astonishing dry riesling GG makes a very serious statement. It also remains cool and restrained, with a glittering thread of flint winding through the textural complexity on the medium- to full-bodied palate. Try to be patience, because this is delicious now, but the tension in the extremely long finish and the youthfulness of the aromas speak of wine with decades of life ahead of it. Wittmann's 2022 Aulerde Westhofen Riesling GG is super clear, refined and elegant on the deep and pure nose that is also intense due to fruit from old vines that were planted in 1949 and 1959. It's slightly reductive but attractively so and intermingled with discreet yeasty and mocha notes. On the palate, this is a very pure and mineral, firmly structured Riesling with concentration and power yet still a somewhat astringent finish. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. The 2022 Riesling Westhofener Aulerde Grosses Gewächs is made from the estate's oldest vines, planted in 1949 at an unusual density of 8,000 vines/ha in the rich marls of Aulerde. The vineyard still cannot be navigated by tractor in its narrow rows. The nose is vivid and direct with lifted lemon and flinty yeast. With air, the lemon attains all the richness of the ripest Amalfi lemon. The palate is concentrated but very fluid, compact, streamlined and rounded. Lemon freshness tingles around the edges as the wine transports you deeper and deeper into the soil. Phenolics lend structure to relative richness. Bottled earlier on the day I tasted it (!), the 2022 Kirchspiel Westhofen Riesling GG is pure, intense and refined but also untamed on the chalky nose. The 2022 Riesling Westhofener Kirchspiel Grosses Gewächs is from this east-facing site, with just 30cm of topsoil on limestone. A slight reduction marks the shy nose. The palate is slender but concentrated. A notion of green and yellow apple peel insinuates itself on the textured palate, presenting apple skin - perhaps this wine's guise of the phenolics - alongside the mouthwatering fruit that hovers between apple and citrus and a notion of lemon balm. The mid-palate is concentrated, very straight-shooting, linear and driven. The 2022 is cooling and has much energy. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2050.

The 2022 Riesling Westhofener Brunnenhäuschen Grosses Gewächs abuts the Morstein, but it is slightly more elevated with its limestone overlaid with terra rossa rich in iron oxide. Flinty reduction still holds sway on the nose. However, the palate comes with a smooth, serene and gentle texture of lemon zest bedded on soft, pillowy yeast, yet with many directions and zing, driving forward with gentle force. The finish tapers to beautiful, lemon-pervaded slenderness. The phenolic grip manifests on the finish with beautiful finesse and zesty, citric definition. The 2022 is a lovely and intriguing mix of obliqueness and directness. It's very long and very fine in the face of 2022. Wow. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2050.

The Brunnenhäuschen site is directly adjacent to the more famous Morstein and has a similar soil structure: reddish, with clay marl, limestone and water-bearing layered limestone rocks in the subsoil, which showed great advantage in the warm and dry 2022. This gives the Riesling an almost cool-seeming brilliance, with a slight smokiness over the apple and citrus fruits. The acidity is smooth and ripe, but also powerful. On the palate, it also makes a strong impression: intensive and lasts incredibly long. Drink 2028 - 2050.

I am the first to admit that at times I live beyond my means. There are consumables that stretch this, and in rare moments, items of relief. Discovering wines like Heggies’ Riesling for under $30 is one of them. The wine opens with a most pretty nose of white blossoms, clementine, sliced Granny Smith apples, and fresh water over pebbled brooks. There is something almost purifying about it, a purge of the week’s stress and for some… reckless spending. Between the zip and zing of lime zest and green apple flesh, the wine is lightweight and downy. A gentle grip on the palate pulls it down a line of slaty minerality towards a talcy close. The 2016er Erdener Prälat GG is made from very old un-grafted vines, and was fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for almost 12 months. This offers a gorgeous nose of pear, mango, grapefruit, passion fruit, brown sugar, apricot blossom, fine spices and flint stone from reduction. The wine is slightly bold on the palate and leaves a juicy and clean feel in the long and nicely firm and bold finish. The aftertaste is nicely long and elegant. 2021-2031.

In keeping with the evolution of Loosen and Schug’s approach to Prälat over the past decade, it displays more than enough animation and primary juiciness to accompany its glycerol-richness and sense of stuffing. Suggestions of apple and mango exhibit a dichotomy of ripeness along with “green” pungency, but in the context of this wine’s piquant, zesty citricity and sense of herbal suffusion, I find the effect stimulating rather than inharmonious. The finish here grips aggressively but without overt bitterness and with persistent refreshment. This could conceivably be the last of its kind, as Loosen and Schug are considering discontinuing a “regular” Prälat Grosses Gewächs and instead shunting the entirety of dry wine labeled for that site into their “Reserve” program.

The 2020 Idig Königsbach Riesling Grosse Lage offers a pure, chalky, fresh, concentrated and iodine- and lemon-scented nose representing the limestone terroir of the cru as well as the warmth of the vintage. Saline and crystalline on the first palate, this is a pure, fresh and concentrated but also lush and vitalizing Riesling with a pure, enormously saline and tensioned finish with fine tannin grip. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in November 2022. Drink 2027 - 2050.

So deep, it feels like it’s pulling you in the direction of the center of the earth! Yet, another side of the wine seems to float above the world. Radically mineral finish that leaves you in no doubt about this great dry riesling’s future! From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.

The 2020er Idig GG, as it is referred to on the consumer label, presents a beautifully smoky and floral nose of anise, cassis, jasmine, licorice, and herbs, as well as a hint of camphor. The wine proves superbly zesty and elegant on the comparatively light-weighted yet complex palate. The finish is super long and focused, despite more weight and presence coming through, especially with airing. The overall balance remains on the fresh and lively side, and we would opt to enjoy this beauty rather in its primary phase of development. Drink 2023-2030.

The 2019 Idig GG is pure and chalky on the deep, intense, fully ripe yet elegant, refined and lemonscented nose with its ripe mirabelle aromas. Silky and juicy on the first palate, this is an elegant, very complex, tight and mineral Idig with structure, finesse and well-dosed power. The finish is pure and salty, beautifully citric and very long, with promising grip and tension.

The deepest waters are the most mysterious, because you look ever further down and never know what you're going to discover another five fathoms deeper. And just so, this beautiful riesling has seductive fruit that drags you into an abyss of beauty and joy. What stunning texture, and what a long, refined finish. The 2019 Reiterpfad-Hofstück GG is still slightly reductive, opening to a precise and flinty-scented bouquet with tropical fruit aromas and generous ripeness and warmth but also precision. On the palate, this is an intense and juicy yet refined and elegant Riesling from Ruppertsberg. The finish is crystalline and pure, with a lingering salty flavor, but also powerful and aromatic.

Ripe yellow grapefruit meets a whole garden of herbs and a small iceberg. A generous but precisely proportioned wine with dark finesse, if that doesn't sound too crazy. Great energy at the bold finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification.

The lemon/lime-green colored 2018 Idig Riesling Trocken "GG" offers a deep and complex, still yeasty-scented and flinty nose. Lush and juicy on the palate but with a fine and silky texture, fine tannins and a very long finish, this is an outstandingly rich and powerful Riesling with perhaps some grams of sugar or a lower acidity but with the vitality of a remarkable wine that will surely and clearly improve in the bottle.

This is a remarkably mineral and taut style with dried citrus, quartz, ivory and brightly squeezed citrus. Edgy and compact on the palate with subtle, caressing phenolics and vibrant, bright acidity. Long and very citrusy on the finish. Drink now or hold.

The delicious paradox of this great dry riesling is the way it is built on an imposing scale, but is very pure and super straight without any hint of heaviness, even on the very long powerful finish. You'll need to be patient for at least a couple of years if you want to experience all the subtle nuances, but the ripe mirabelle note is already delightful. At least thirty years of ageing potential.

For once orchard fruit getsthe upper hand on meadow herbs in a Christmann Grosses Gewächs, but not in a heavy-handed but rather delightfully animating way. Fine mineral and herbal notions add interest and the merest hint of residual sugar serves only to increase the Idig’s power of seduction. I liked the 2014 for its subtlety, but think the 2016 deserves an extra half point for elegance.

The 2015 Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Auslese is the botrytis selection of the terraced Laychen plot that mainly sources the dry Riesling cru. From ungrafted 70-year-old vines, this Auslese opens stunningly clear, fresh and stony on the nose, with flinty flavors and remarkably fine and precise fruit aromas. This is a very well defined, finessed and mineral Auslese with some Saar features, although it is more lush and tender, of course. The finish is pure and stony, very fine and piquant, with lots of salt and stimulating finesse. A great and gorgeous Mosel Auslese!

The 2015 Dhroner Hofberg Riesling Spätlese comes from the warmer part of the cru and from 60+ year old vines that were picked botrytis-free in the end of October. The wine offers a super precise, fresh and intense bouquet of perfectly ripe Riesling berries intermixed with cool, crystalline-clear slate and flint aromas that give an exciting counterpoint. On the palate, this is a highly piquant and elegant, very finessed and lush Spätlese. It has a gorgeously elegant, balanced and stimulatingly salty finish. This is a picture-book Spätlese from the 2015 vintage and comes highly recommended.

Brilliant water like colour with greenish tinged edges. Lifted lime juice top notes intermix with lemon, green apple and steely mineral notes. There’s good intensity to the refreshing lime juice and citrus flavours which are underscored by some granny smith apple elements, wet steel and mineral. Finishes dry with crunchy acidity and a long lime juice, citrus, green apple, wet steel and mineral aftertaste.

I'm guilty of not including the Grampians as a high quality regional producer of riesling in Australia-wide comparisons. The perfumed bouquet of lime and apple blossom leads into a long, mouthwatering burst of lime/lemon, crisp acidity the icing on the cake. Drink by 2032.

Riesling in Australia.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
