Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners. Browse our top rated Riesling wines here.

Zesty and taut with a long laser sharp finish.

Pikes have long produced one of Clare Valley’s benchmark Rieslings, 2025 marking the 41st release, one which was marked by frost and drought, yielding smaller crops but fruit with incredible purity. Fruit is sourced predominately from the Estate’s Polish Hill River vineyard with the balance coming from growers located in the Watervale, Sevenhill, Leasingham and Mintaro districts. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel on lees for 3 months.
Brilliant water like core with green tinted edges. Aromas of lime and citrus leap out of the glass followed by some green apple, orange rind, talc and chalky mineral notes. Concentrated lime, citrus and green apple fruits drive the zesty palate with subtle orange rind, chalky talc and steely mineral elements extending across the back half. Crisp, taut line of acidity with a long, tense, laser sharp finish.

The test of a good vineyard is often how well it performs in challenging years, and 2025 was certainly a challenging one. Yet the wine has emerged as something of a triumph. It’s a Clare Valley wine and produced with 100% free-run juice, then kept on lees for about three months, introducing a level of texture to the keenly edged palate. The perfumed mix of lemons and lime is evident immediately, and then the palate displays that subtle tension through the acid and a fine minerality that extends through to the finish. It never fails to disappoint, and it’s another excellent example of what Pikes can do. Drink 2025-2035.

One of Australia’s most reliable wines, always good value and always brilliant quality. This is the 41st release of this Clare Valley stalwart. It should be well represented in every serious cellar. The fruit comes from their own estate in the Polish Hill River sub-region and various growers across the Clare. 100% free run juice, which sees three months on lees. Always delicious young, it can be relied on to age and improve for many, many years. The 2025 vintage may be a small one, but it is proving to be of exceptional quality. Lemon/lime in colour, the nose offers a range of aromas including white jasmine, limes, spices, river stones and hints of grapefruit. Medium to good length, this is clean, fresh and well balanced. Expect it to provide fifteen to twenty years of pleasure, if you prefer your Riesling mature. Drink 2025-2045.

Taut and tense in it’s structure yet showing superb drive and concentration.

Named in tribute to Pike’s family matriarch, ‘The Merle’ is a selection of the best parcels of Riesling from their Polish Hill River Estate.
Brilliant water like colour with a faint greenish tinge around the edges. A mix of lime, citrus, orange and green apple scents attack the nostrils with plenty of intensity. Trailing notes of talc, chalky mineral characters then chime in. Tense yet concentrated, racy lime, lemon and Granny Smith apple flavours are sculptured by a crisp line of acidity. Terrific drive with wet steel, chalky talc and mineral elements lingering through the long taut, linear finish.

The flagship Riesling from the team comes from the estate vineyard in the Polish Hill River sub-region in the Clare valley. 100% free run juice with four months on lees. As always, this will sit with the very finest Rieslings made in the region for the vintage. Very pale steel/lemon in hue, this is still extremely youthful. Taut, poised and tightly focused, the nose reveals notes of grapefruits, lemongrass, florals, wet slate, limes and jasmine. There is a fine line of acidity running the length. Excellent energy throughout, this is a juicy style, immaculately balanced, with an extremely long finish. It will still be amazing wine lovers in two decades, likely longer. Drink 2025-2045.

This has always been a special wine for Pikes, and the fruit is sourced from the best parts of the Polish Hill River estate. Made similarly to the Traditional, with 100% free-run juice, however receives a slightly longer time on lees, providing a balance with that fine natural acidity and producing a textural mouthfeel that loses nothing as far as maintaining that linear line through to the finish. The nose displays that citrus lime character and a slightly pebbly talc-like influence. There is real intensity and drive through the palate here, and it extends effortlessly but with purpose through to a long finish. It’s a lovely wine. Drink 2025-2040.

This is from the best parcels of Riesling from their Polish Hill River estate. In other news, I’ve finally thrown in the towel and started wearing reading glasses. This at the ripe old age of 55. I have to say, I find them annoying to wear while tasting because my glass often touches the frames. On the upside, I do look very handsome in them, and they probably raise my IQ by a few points. Anyway, I think of our own BBPP when I taste this wine, which makes me frown a bit, thus offering an extra dimension to my new found reading glasses wearing persona.
Quite some perfume here. I’m thinking lemongrass, lavender, bath salts, and fresh cut ginger. Lime juice and pink grapefruit, a fine dusty feel to it, and a something of a gin and tonic refreshment value. The acidity is juicy and firm, but not hard, and the finish is very long, spicy and chalky. There’s purity and restraint here, and it feels like it will do very well in the cellar. Drink 2026-2037+

Bryan Martin has been producing thought-provoking wines in Murrumbateman wine country since 2001. Their Estate vineyard is managed sustainably, focusing on soil health, and foregoing synthetic chemicals, herbicides, and fertilisers. Fruit is also sourced for their Regional Series from the surrounding Young, Hilltops & Canberra District regions.

The Estate Riesling is sourced from mostly 25-year-old vines grown on granite soils at 650 metres elevation. After approximately 24 hours on skins, the fruit was direct-pressed to two ceramic eggs for fermentation and a year-long élevage with lees. It was then racked to old foudre where it rested before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Gosh this is good. We know this from prior, but the reminder is strong and evocative in the glass. It’s that powdery texture mixed with glass shards of acidity. The strong scents of fresh squeezed lemon, perfect Tommy’s Margaritas, green apple freshness. Intensity and crystalline texture yet so much drinkability and refreshment. Faint savouriness? That too. And a quartz-like minerally finish matched to light almond with citrus spiked over the lot. Wow. Drink 2021 - 2035.

Selbach-Oster has a history in the wine trade dating back 1660, while the current winery was formed in the mid 1800's. Known for producing highly detailed and pure expressions of Riesling, Selbach-Oster have vines planted in some of the greatest sites in the Mosel, including Zeltinger Himmelreich, Schlossberg, and Sonnenuhr; Wehlener Sonnenuhr; and Graacher Himmelreich and Domprobst. Today, Johannes Selbach and his wife Barbara, with the increasing help of son Sebastian and daughter Hannah, manage their vineyards and winery with passion and respect for the estate’s long held traditions. Johannes, like his late father Hans, has continued the use of traditional oak fuder in his cellar, bringing in new large casks every few years. Vinification is carried out in a combination of fuder and stainless steel, in a hands-off manner with no fining, and predominantly with wild yeasts. The focus is on meticulous work in the vineyard with the aim to produce and bring home perfect fruit.

Planned to be a Kabinett that finally got too ripe (100° Oechsle), the 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese * is clear and intense on the nose. Juicy and quite rich on the palate, this is a piquant and acidity-driven Spätlese with an enormously piquant and salty finish. Picke din the first week of October, it has laser sharp acidity that cuts through the rich texture that is based on 15% to 18% botrytis fruit. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. Hang on to your hat. With its enormous ripeness and brilliant acidity, this monumental wine defies the limits of the Spätlese category. None of the exotic fruit that’s so typical for 2019, rather you're in the kingdom of the peach here ! Decades of aging potential. Drink or hold.

The 2019er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese * was made from fruit harvested at 100° Oechsle and fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar (81 g/l). It exhibits some smoky, minty, and ripe scents of pear, quince, almond cream, lavender, pineapple, and smoke on the nose. The wine reveals a more exotic and animating side on the delicate and subtly smooth palate, and leaves one with a feeling of presence and intensity, but all focused and chiseled in the long finish. Fermented in glass balloon for 22 months and bottled at the end of August this year, the 2018 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese is highly concentrated yet pure and spicy/stony on the apricot-scented nose that is enormously detailed and refined for this class. Enormously rich and juicy-piquant on the palate, this is a fantastically precise and stimulating TBA that will become a legend years from now. This is a perfectly balanced noble sweet wine with unreal precision. Picked with 201° Oechsle and bottled with nearly 7% alcohol, 318 grams of residual sugar and 11.5 grams of total acidity. The 2018er Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese was harvested at 201° Oechsle and was fermented down to fully noble-sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers an absolutely magnificent and deeply complex nose of apricot, apple jelly, honey, marzipan, almond paste, coconut cream, dried apricot, and even a hint of floral nuances. Despite its richness and impressive levels of residual sugar, it proves crystal clear on the palate and rewards one with plenty of yellow honeyed fruits delivered with creamy and unctuous viscosity. Ripe, pure, and zesty acidity runs through the wine and gives it great focus and intensity right into the incredibly long finish. This TBA is simply stellar! Drink 2038-2118.

Vinification is carried out in a combination of fuder and stainless steel, in a hands-off manner with no fining, and predominantly with wild yeasts. The focus is on meticulous work in the vineyard with the aim to produce and bring home perfect fruit.

The 2017 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Beerenauslese * is perfectly concentrated and refined on the nose with its aromas of stewed peach, fine botrytis and even slate. Lush, beautifully fine and finessed on the palate, this is a salty-piquant, fresh and highly delicate Beerenauslese with stimulating salinity and citrus fruit. This is a beauty of great finesse and elegance. Bottled with 6.5% alcohol (in 375-milliliter bottles), it's not sticky or sweet at all but is endlessly salty. A beauty. Tasted in March 2019.

This “one-star” BA has a “no-star” counterpart which I did not taste. “They were both very good and would have made an outstanding blend,” said Selbach, “but this lot exhibited a tick more finesse,” so he opted for separate bottlings, of which this one constituted 200 liters. White raisin and apple jelly are accompanied on the nose by prickle of lemon peel and radish, then pick up brown spices, honey, hazelnut paste and mango chutney on a viscous yet buoyant palate, leading to a vibrant, superbly multifaceted and ravishingly sustained finish. Drink 2019 - 2060.

The 2017er Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Beerenauslese * was harvested at a massive 155° Oechsle, i.e. already in TBA territory. It displays an immensely complex nose made of nut paste, raisin, candied grapefruit, mango, smoke, vanilla and bergamot. The wine is superbly aromatic on the palate where it delivers mango, honey, raisin, plum, nut paste, apple jelly and orange jam with remarkable presence and delicacy. The finish proves hugely pure and immensely long. The combination of density and finesse defies all logic. What a great dessert wine in the making! Drink 2027-2067.

The 2018 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Beerenauslese displays an intense but very clear and radiant citrus color in the glass. The nose is concentrated and fresh, with lemon chutney and broken stone aromas. Pure and fresh on the palate, this is a dense, concentrated, rich yet very precise, fresh and elegant BA with a long, crunchy, terroir-driven finish that represents the delicate slate structure of the Sonnenuhr. Still young but not really sweet due to the crystalline acidity structure. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. Drink 2028 - 2080.

This 2018er Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling BA was harvested at approx. 130° Oechsle and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar (approx. 200 g/l). This cask sample offers a gorgeous and clean nose of candied grapefruit, pineapple juice, rhubarb, apricot , melon and honey. The wine is very juicy and sweet on the delicately viscous palate. The finish is quite intense and very long. This BA is still very sweet and juicy, and will please lovers of rich and intense dessert wines. Drink 2028-2058.

2024 is officially the 60th anniversary of the planting of Drumborg vineyard. A truly wonderful milestone! A terrific wine, too, opening with focused aromas of lemon sherbet, pink grapefruit, makrut lime and orange blossom. The palate is just as focused and pure fruited, with the wine's 3.6g/L residual sugar perfectly balanced by its mouth-watering acidity. Have this with food now, but make sure you still have a bottle or two a decade, or longer, from now. Drink by 2032.

What a fitting, beautifully aromatic wine to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the planting of the Drumborg vineyard! The decision to plant Riesling in the ultra-cool Drumborg district all those decades ago was truly ahead of its time and has been rewarded year after year with a wine that celebrates the heady, floral aromatics of the variety, while also rewarding substantial cellaring.  Spring flowers, so engaging, with the lifted scent of wildflowers, citrus blossom, apple, lemon, lime and grapefruit zest beckons from the glass.  Against a strong core of lime, lemon and Delicious apple and with just a hint of Asian fruits, the wine lights up in bright, zingy acidity . . . just like sucking on a Mayer lemon with great balance throughout. A fine Riesling by any measure. Drink 2024-2034.

Founded by winemaker Samantha Connew, Stargazer has become one of Tasmania's most compelling small producers, crafting wines of precision and quiet intensity from the Coal River and Derwent Valleys. Whether Riesling, Chardonnay or Pinot Noir, each release reflects a meticulous, hands-off approach and a focus on texture, energy and site expression. For many, Stargazer marks the sweet spot between refinement and individuality in modern Tasmanian wine.

The 2025 Single Vineyard Riesling delicately balances between being 'dry' and 'off-dry' (6.7g/L residual sugar), and achieves a remarkable equilibrium between acidity and fruitiness. The Riesling comes from all three blocks of the Stargazer vineyard located in the Tea Tree sub-region of Coal River, planted in 2004, 2017, and 2021, supplemented with grapes from another grower in Campania sub region, planted in 2001. The grapes are carefully hand-picked, destemmed, and then undergo eight hours of skin contact maceration before being pressed and transferred to tanks for fermentation. Fermentation is halted when the ideal sugar-to-acid balance is achieved, and the wine is left on lees for several months, with gentle stirring every two weeks.

A fragrant and wonderfully perfumed Coal River Valley riesling that shows characters of green apple, grapefruit, yuzu, lime, apple blossom, mineral salts, clover and crushed stone. There are little crushed mountain herb notes that join in on the palate, with a fine, lacy mineral driveline and a swell of green apple, citrus and stone on the back end. Drink 2025-2035.

This wine comes exclusively from Stargazer's own vineyards in the Tea Tree sub-region of the Coal River Valley, where the vines were planted in 2002. Riesling sourced from the Palisander vineyard in Tea Tree in the Coal River Valley and made by Samantha Connew. Pale straw with aromas of green apple, lime and grapefruit with hints of flint, clover blossom, wildflowers, distant crushed herbs, cold chamomile tea, crushed stone, sea spray and ozone. There is just a touch of texture on the palate, which shows a focused mineral line and excellent tension between the inherent citrus and apple fruit tones and the chalky mineral cadence. Lovely stuff; crisp, composed drinking. Drink 2025-2035.

This wine is named after Frédéric Emile Trimbach, who became renowned in 1898 for ensuring a new standard of quality and authenticity for Trimbach. For several generations, the south and southeast-facing Grand Crus of Geisberg and Osterberg in Ribeauvillé have been producing this wine. The vines, averaging over 55 years, yield limited quantities. Alongside the Clos Saint Hune release, this is the estate’s most famous wine.

Luminous straw-yellow. Complex, mint-accented aromas of nectarine, tangerine and powdered stone, plus a hint of licorice. Then bright, juicy and dense, showing outstanding acid-sugar balance and a penetrating juiciness to the stone fruit and herbal flavors. Finishes multilayered and very long, displaying noteworthy clarity and limy cut on the saline finish. Wine lovers everywhere know just how great Frédéric Emile Rieslings can be, but this looks to be a real knockout in the making; I absolutely love this wine’s mineral drive and precision. It pulls off the neat trick of being both very ageworthy and also lovely to drink right now. I was happy to know that my palate was still working after an extremely long day of tasting when I told Pierre that in this vintage of Frédéric Emile I found more of the Geisberg than the Osterberg (in most vintages, the wine is a blend of 60/40 Osterberg-Geisberg, at times even 70/30, but this year it’s more like 55/45). The lemon-sherbet note here is really beautiful. Then comes a wealth of herbs, ranging from thyme to parsley, with a touch of sea salt, before turning to more floral nuances, such as cherries and almond blossom. The powerful acidity seems to surround the whole mouth and makes this almost like licking a lemon; the unmistakable dryness is all the more enjoyable because of it. Tasted from a special magnum commemorating the 10th anniversary of this sub-regional release. The fruit is from several vineyard sources, with some of the material dating back to plantings from 1975. Quintessential Clare Valley riffs on Rose’s lime juice, quince paste, tonic, preserved lemon rind, wild fennel and gardenias. Dry and medium-bodied by virtue of the sheer extract and density of the mouthfeel. Yet despite the dryness, there is nothing hard. Tactile and impressively juicy across a tenacious finish. Vignerons Schmölzer & Brown is the partnership of winemaker-viticulturist Tessa Brown and architect Jeremy Schmölzer, crafting wines from high-altitude vineyards in Beechworth and the King Valley. Their estate vineyard, Thorley, sits over 700m ASL and is farmed with organic practices in all but the most challenging years. Working with minimal intervention, they focus on purity, balance, and drinkability. The range includes single-site wines from Thorley, Brunnen, and Obstgarten, as well as their approachable Prêt-à series.

From Whitlands’ second-highest altitude Riesling vineyard (800m), planted in the late 1980s by the Croucher family among orchards and walnut trees. These mature, unirrigated, close-planted vines yield naturally high-acid, late-ripening fruit. Crafted in a German Trocken style, this single-site Riesling is crisp, pure, and aromatic, with the precision, lift, and minerality that only high-altitude viticulture can deliver.

“Kabinett” ripeness with a portion of skin contact to build texture. King Valley riesling gets serious and it's next level stuff. There's a super fineness of expression, a delicacy, a purity to be explored here. Bristles in grapefruit, lemon fruits and green pear, lifted nicely by white florals and a splash of spice. Dry and crisp with filigree fine acidity. Drink 2025-2034.

This is a dry riesling though there’s plenty of give, or body, to the fruit. In fact in riesling terms it’s big on texture, and with it an associated impression of character. It tastes of lime, orange, slate, tonic water and fennel, with crushed herb and floral characters an important part of the wine’s show, as indeed is a yeasty hay-like note. It feels both clean and dirty, in a good way. It has excellent intensity and length. Drink 2025 - 2031+

This is understandably nervy on opening but is quick to settle into a harmonious mix of homemade lemonade, tonic, lime pith, Makrut lime leaf and peach blossom start, followed by subtle nashi pear, green apple, slate, chalk and a glimmer of cinnamon. It’s zesty, lifted, fresh and bright. The palate balances texture and tautness nicely, with 5 grams of residual sugar here sitting in wonderful balance. Lemon rind and green apple sit above hints of white peach and kumquat with a shot of mineral presence through the core and a nice bite of preserved lemon phenolics gripping the sides and drawing length. Classic acidity cleans up and elongates the zesty fruit. The wine’s purity, texture, sugar and structure work together to make a Riesling of balance and interest. Another strong release. 210 dozen bottled.

Daniel Vollenwieder was part of a pioneering movement of winemakers who returned to Mosel in the early 2000’s, rejuvenating abandoned vineyards. These are some of the oldest ungrafted Riesling vines in the world. The steepness of the vineyards is something to marvel, but they’ve still managed to convert the vineyards to organic practises, recently being certified. Fruit for this wine comes from the best plots in the Goldgrube.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a glimmer of green around the edges and a watery hue. Aromas of lime, spiced pear and red apple intermix with hints of honeysuckle and orange blossom. Light weight and possessing a river stone like mouth feel, flavours of lime, pear and green apple are dispersed across the palate with traces of mandarin and wet slate lingering through the back half. Finishes dry with crisp, tangy acidity and an elegant, highly energised aftertaste.

I'm a sucker for an off-dry riesling. 'Breakfast wines' my German mates call them, with their modest alcohols and RS to get the day started. Lemon, lime, white peach and green apple all make an appearance here, with a sorbet-like intensity to its carry, a slick of mineral salts and stone, a scattering of dried herbs and a lovely balance between sweetness and acidity. Drink by 2035.

Wonderfully concentrated and tense with zingy mineral laced acidity.

Wilson’s Polish Hill River Riesling is sourced from their oldest vineyards planted over 40 years ago. Its miniscule yields typically produce a wine rich in citrus fruits within a steely structure, tight with lots of minerality. Beneath the iron stained clay lies a bed of decomposing slate and scattered quartz. It’s also not unusual to find remnant pottery and agricultural implements from the Polish Settlers who once lived and farmed the area now planted to this small vineyard.
Brilliant water like colour with a faint greenish tinge around the edges. Lime and citrus aromas leap out of the glass trailed by some green apple, hints of orange rind, wet steel and chalky mineral notes. Delivered with fabulous intensity and tension are racy lemon, lime and green apple flavours. Zingy mineral laced acidity with delicate orange rind and wet steel elements also shining through. Dry and chalky it finishes very long and zesty.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

It's hard to quantify the impact and value of 350+ vintages the Wittmann family have under their belt in their hometown of Westhofen. As part of the 15th generation of ownership, current steward Philipp Wittmann has embraced the organic viticulture ethos started by his father Günter, even taking it one step further by converting their vineyards to biodynamic in 2004. He lays the foundation for wines of exceptional quality through intensive, year-round maintenance, low yields and the uncompromising selection of bunches by hand. These are superb dry Rieslings from this superstar Rheinhessen winery.

Compared to the Brunnenhäuschen, Wittmann's 2023 Morstein Riesling GG is light and clear but also still very reduced in the fresh and mineral, even savory and precise nose, which is still restrained in the fruit. Pure and extremely salty on the palate, with a very firm and grippy structure and an almost dry/drying minerality, this Morstein draws saliva. It seems more austere and sinewy here and now than the Brunnenhäuschen, and it's still extremely influenced by limestone. This is a great and promising wine. Tasted at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in Wiesbaden in August 2024.
In another tasting two days earlier at the domaine, the 2023 Morstein showed a wonderfully chalky, elegantly fruity and balanced nose. Pure and with citrusy freshness as well as chalky salinity, this is a ravishingly fine, elegant and clever Morstein that is light-years away from the abundance and power of the 2000s and early 2010s. This is vibrant and stimulating salty and truly reminiscent of Champagnes from the Côte des Blancs. A magnificent Morstein! Drink 2028-2060.

The 2023 Riesling Westhofener Morstein Grosses Gewächs still flickers with the slightest flinty reduction on its cool nose, but with air, lemon moves in and stays center stage. The palate is just as lemony and immediately projects cooling, moist, chalky depth. The palate is slender, delving deep into that chalkiness. Scented with lemon and bedded on soothing, citric yeast, the finish is totally zesty, precise, strait-laced, pristine and very long. (Bone-dry). Drink 2028-2060.

Nothing is more fundamental to the world than the interplay of light and darkness, and this wine brings that into your glass in a completely compelling way. There’s an incredible intensity to the minerality of this dry riesling. It’s a giant of orginality, but lies at the upper edge of medium-bodied, resulting in a fantastic sense of lightness. Extraordinary focus and precision in the enchanting and totally fascinating finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink from release.

Clear, bright, elegant and fresh, with spicy citrus fruit and a distinct lime and saline note, Wittmann's Westhofen 2023 Kirchspiel Riesling GG starts strong! Elegant, dense and creamy on the palate, it has a zesty character but is also balanced and noble in texture. Pleasantly round, juicy and intense and always supported by its limestone texture, this is an excellent Riesling from Westhofen! The 2023 Riesling Westhofener Kirchspiel Grosses Gewächs comes with notes of lemon balm and chervil, deeply scented and deliciously herbal. The palate gushes with coolness, like a mountain brook over stone, sinking deeper and deeper into the cool limestone with its serene, bright, lemony scent and the merest creamy edge—rather seductive. Pure, ripe lemon zest shines on the finish. (Bone-dry). Drink 2028-2055.

How can a mysterious labyrinth be so delightful? Because at every turn there’s a new aspect of the wine’s beauty. The incredible tension between the flinty and floral aspects of this wine makes it remarkably energetic for a dry riesling with this level of concentration. Then comes an astonishing Amalfi lemon freshness in the super-long and precise finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink or hold.

Wittmann's Westhofen 2023 Aulerde Riesling GG continues the top performances of the last five years. It has a deep, concentrated, fresh and citrusy nose with substantial saltiness and still some reduction, reminiscent of clay, lime and lime chutney, and a dense and tightly woven palate. This is a fleshy, juicy and concentrated, very youthful but elegant and balanced Aulerde with great potential and long-lasting minerality and savoriness, but it's also generous and elegant in its fruit expression. The 2023 Riesling Westhofener Aulerde Grosses Gewächs is made from vines planted in the rich marls Aulerde in 1949 and 1951, at a then-unusual density of 8,000 vines per hectare. Wittmann says that this is the earliest ripening site, yielding tiny, ripe grapes year after year. A touch of mellow, ripe, yellow apple appears alongside gentle lemon on the nose. The palate also has that beautiful yellow apple spice and lovely juiciness and texture. The serene and smooth yet hearty palate radiates coolness. (Bone-dry). Drink 2028-2050.

Bold, compact and concentrated, this astonishing dry riesling GG makes a very serious statement. It also remains cool and restrained, with a glittering thread of flint winding through the textural complexity on the medium- to full-bodied palate. Try to be patience, because this is delicious now, but the tension in the extremely long finish and the youthfulness of the aromas speak of wine with decades of life ahead of it. Riesling in Australia.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
