Very mineral and almost spicy on the nose even though there’s intense bright citrus fruit – lemon and grapefruit. Like the Scheurebe Kabinett, amazing intensity and purity. Incredible balance between the ripe citrus and the super-high but balanced acidity. Eye-watering freshness and yet it is still elegant. Amazing length. Sweet but balanced. Electric.

2017 Keller AbtsE Riesling SpatleseRheinhessen, GERMANY$199. 00Bottle$2388.00 DozenABV: 8.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
Picked in conjunction with the corresponding Grosses Gewächs, this leads with scents of lemon, mirabelle and quince. The lusciously fruited, glossy but buoyant palate adds an animating tang of seedy white currant that sets up an invigorating and dynamic counterpoint with the wine’s sweetness and with the faintly jellied aspects of quince and mirabelle that feature alongside their fresh fruit expressions. A cooling inner-mouth hint of mint and a faint aura of white raisin add further contrast and allure. In keeping with themes familiar from this collection’s memorable Grosse Gewächse, the soaring, superbly sustained finish exhibits striking vibrancy as well as a palpable sense of chalky impingement rare in a sweet Spätlese. What’s more, for all of the richness and flirtation with overripeness on display here, there is infectious juiciness to refresh and encourage the next sip.

2018 Keller Von der Fels RieslingRheinhessen, GERMANY$64. 99Bottle$779.88 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkThe 2018 Von der Fels Riesling Trocken is magnificent this year and is probably the very finest bargain in the universe of dry Rieslings in all of Germany in this vintage! This blend is made from the fruit of younger vines in the Grand Cru Vineyards Hubacker, Kirchspiel, Morstein and Absterde. It clearly shows! Dubbed Rheinhessen’s best producer, Klaus-Peter Keller took over his family’s estate in 2001, focusing on single-vineyard, old vine Riesling. Dubbed the ‘Montrachets of Germany,’ these wines are known for their complexity, weight, & texture.
Other Reviews....
Honed-in purity and focus are the hallmarks of this Riesling. Citrus and green fruit are the exclusive appetizers on the nose. Not only is the acidity knife-edged, but there’s also magnificent depth and focus. Stunning freshness and minerality on the finish with iron-filings that might just shave off a few taste buds!

Hold on tight before you drink this dry riesling! Mind-blowing concentration here, yet it weighs in at just 12.5 per cent alcohol. This gives it an extraordinary impression of weightlessness at the finish. Enormous aging potential. Try in 2019.

JamesSuckling.comLots of rocky spice on the nose, immediately more open than you might expect for Morstein. Peachy too. Apricot but without the sweetness (and there’s no botrytis on any of the GG wines). Aromatic without being perfumed. Rich and deep and mouth-filling. There’s power but no lack of finesse. Muscular, deep, deep and long. It almost goes without saying about a Keller wine that it is perfectly fresh but it also has all this spice and power. Really rocky and mineral, but dark rock not chalky. Deep, deep wine.

Extremely deep, but as straight as a laser beam, this is brimming with grapefruit, herb and smoke character. The enormous, mineral freshness on the super-concentrated palate drives the finish out in the direction of infinity. Better from 2019.

JamesSuckling.comBoth intense and pretty on the nose. Deep citrus and also some peppery white blossom. Mineral spice and herbs too. Then rich in orange pith on the palate, deep and somehow more gentle than the Kirchspiel even though it has real intensity. The acidity is crisp but less defining, much more mouth-filling. Such a contrast with the Kirchspiel. Totally captivating and a wine to lose yourself in, a wine of rich generosity, almost exotic fruit, without any loss of purity and freshness. Endlessly long and already complex but without that saltiness of the Kirchspiel. The freshness is still remarkable on the finish.

Cask sample. Ripe, very pure, super-intense lemon. On the palate, pure, super-concentrated apricot. Sweet but incredibly light on its feet. Very Kirchspiel, with a mineral/stony foundation almost completely overwhelmed by the fruit now. Needs time to become more complex. Mouth-watering apricot finish, with depth and length but no excess weight. Intensely primary. Stay away for 10 years at least. At the moment it seems almost too sweet even though it has the acidity to balance.

Has the fumey mineral character of the Pettenthal Grosses Gewächs on the nose but also a peachy citrus fruit note and a light herbal quality on the palate. Eye-watering acidity and purity. More linear than the Abts E and the Morstein GGs, more direct and arrow-like. Incredibly primary and not ready, for tasting let alone for drinking. With such intense wines in the 2017 vintage, the G-Max does not stand out as much for its intensity as in other vintages, but the length is immeasurable.

Julia Harding MW - jancisrobinson.comThe 2017 G-Max from Weingut Keller is simply brilliant. Again, the inherent elegance of the vintage is very much in evidence here, with the wine showing magical minerality and lift from the short crop and the great quality of the growing season. The youthful nose offers up scents of pink grapefruit, tart orange, a touch of lemongrass, gentle notes of wild yeasts, a very refined base of limestone soil elements, a nice dollop of smokiness and an exotic topnote of spiced meats. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and racy, with a great core, outstanding focus and grip and impeccable balance on the very long, vibrant finish. There is a sense of seamless electricity and endless backend lift in the 2017 G-Max that is simply amazing. 2030-2095.

Tangerine, lime, Persian melon and Rainier cherry are fragrantly arrayed in anticipation of a luscious joint performance on this bottling’s silken palate. A smoky, lava salt savor and musky, narcissus-like floral perfume add to its seductive and mouthwatering inner-mouth appeal, while piquant hints of cherry pit and tangerine peel add delightful counterpoint on a buoyant, superbly sustained finish. At 11.5% alcohol and 17 grams of supportive but discreet residual sugar, this beauty – representing an amalgam of two casks – is stylistically very much in the mold of its wonderful vintage 2015 predecessor.

David Schildknecht - VinousWhat a seductive beauty! This combines an ethereal lightness with enormous depth. The spectrum of the aromas is enormous, reaching from ripe peach to white pepper. This steep red slate “Grand Cru” site often makes classic Kabinetts. In fact the 2016 was one of Keller’s “VDP auction wines” and it all sold for AUD $358 per bottle (inc. Au taxes)! Made from non-botrytis grapes, but so minerally, steely and bursting with tropical and citrus fruits. With a little sweetness, crisp finish and beautiful minerality, this is precision balanced perfection.

Every now and then, when I’m actually out at a fancy restaurant, and I see Keller on the list, I usually order it. My non-wine friends (a majority!) always love it. “Gee, GW, you sure know how to pick good wines. It’s great being out with you. You are the best!” Or something like that…
Savoury, smoky, almost cheesy scents over green apple sorbet, mango and lime, but as ever with Keller, it’s the texture that gets you involved. This is particularly chalky, crunchy and interesting, with that gin and tonic granita freshness/bitterness on the long finish. Wunderbar.

2023 Keller Kirchspiel Riesling Grosses GewachsRheinhessen, GERMANY$495. 00Bottle$5940.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkIt is difficult to overstate just how central Weingut Keller has become to the modern understanding of dry Riesling. Since Klaus-Peter Keller took over from his father in 2001, the estate has set a global benchmark for precision and expression, joined in recent years by his son Felix, who now plays an increasingly active role in both the vineyards and cellar. Together with Julia Keller, they continue to refine a style that balances crystalline purity with textural depth, producing some of the most sought-after wines in Germany and beyond.
Kirchspiel is a steep, east-to-southeast facing amphitheatre in Westhofen with thin, chalk-rich marl over limestone. The site's exposure and cooler air flow are key to its reputation for producing wines of clarity and aromatic lift, and it consistently ranks among Keller's most distinctive Grosse Lage bottlings.
Other Reviews....
The Westhofen 2023 Kirchspiel Riesling GG is deep and intense on the concentrated and calcareous, slightly floral nose. Lush and round on the palate, this is an elegant, finessed and concentrated, very intense, tight and saline-finishing Kirchspiel with fine tannins. There are minty notes and white pepper on the finish. Tasted as a sample in May this year, the wine was to be bottled in July. Drink 2026-2050.

Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2023 Riesling Westhofener Kirchspiel Grosses Gewächs is from vines that average 50 years old. Pure, serene, ripe lemon is suffused with creaminess and an ethereal overtone on the nose. The palate is a picture of juicy citrus, lemon balm and white peach. It’s concentrated and zesty but also creamy, with inherent depth and a stoniness that becomes gently textural. It lines the mouth with tingling freshness and some pleasant astringency that only helps to accentuate the finesse and brightness. This finishes with gorgeous length. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2060.

Anne Krebiehl MW - VinousThis is a complex and structured wine, but it still seems to dance on your palate and has a certain playfulness on the nose as well. In fact, these are the things that introduce you to the serious side of the wine. Plenty of peaches, Mirabelle plums, lemon zest and some summer flowers and mint. Then comes the fine chalky minerality, which guides you through the long, elegant finish. Drink from release.

Stuart Pigott - JamesSuckling.comVines aged 60 years. Just 20 cm of topsoil over limestone. First vintage with Kirchspiel on the label was 2002. Tank sample.
Initially more restrained than the Von der Fels, but with intense, deeply mined purity of citrus fruit and a touch of just-ripe apricot plus the merest hint of herbs and stony/smoky minerality. Creamy, too, from the long lees ageing, which has clothed the upright backbone in a softer flesh. That stony character is more marked on the palate, as well as a pithy texture that brings another layer to the fruit. Some grip on the finish. Layered, long, captivating finesse without being showy. The flavours go on and on until the wine seems to take up residence in your mouth. Then a lift of freshness on the finish. As the wine warms, just a touch of honey at the very end even though the wine is bone dry. Drink 2025-2038.

Butterscotch, lemon patisserie and peach aromas. Pristine quality to the texture, lively and thrilling, this is a serious, opulent and powerful wine, more on the spiced, nuanced side with aspects of dried herbs, wood scents and bitter lemon and orange with a touch of honeyed lychee. It feels supremely complex and characterful. Sophisticated, layered and balanced with some minerality, a slight graphite edge all of which adds to the whole. It's still extremely youthful but there is real sculpting here, a sense of precision, style and freshness. Well crafted with an extremely long life ahead. Georgina Hindle - DecanterThe 2019 Vin de Constance is matured for 18 months in 500-liter Hungarian and French oak barrels, 50% new, followed by another 18 months in oak foudres. The growing season saw more sunlight hours than previous vintages (2,998 compared to 2,588 in 2018 for example). It has an understated nose, almost Sauternes-like even if it does not contain an ounce of botrytis. Subtle nutty aromas percolate through the wild honey and quince scents, wax resin and lanolin. The palate is medium-bodied and very pure. Disarmingly fine acidity, it is slightly Germanic towards the finish. with a hint of lemongrass lingering on the aftertaste. JamesSuckling.comHighly floral and concentrated nose full of marmalade, orange zest, toasted caramel patisserie, orange blossom, a Tutti Frutti element and some soft oak touches too. Thick and viscous, comforting and deep with a weighty, sugary texture offset by serious spiced and toasted edges that give this angles and a taught frame. Serious, not so easy and generous, more dense and concentrated, this feels well built and purposeful. The sweetness (butterscotch, thick creamy lemon and apricot yoghurt and hints of honey) is countered by a delicious citrus zestiness and bitter orange touches. I adore the combination of flavours and this feels expertly made with precision, freshness and clarity. Lots to enjoy and think about here with a satisfying, long, mineral grip on the finish. From a challenging 2020 vintage with small, concentrated berries and a reduced crop. 174g/l residual sugar. 3.92pH. 6.3g/l total acidity. 2018 Klein Constantia Vin de Constance (500ml)Constantia, SOUTH AFRICA$125. 00Bottle$1500.00 DozenClosure: CorkVin de Constance from Klein Constantia has a history dating back over 300 years. In the 18th and 19th centuries “the sweet luscious and excellent wine of Constantia” was recognised as one of the great wines of the world, savoured by royalty and given pride of place in the cellars of the world’s greatest wine collectors. Although production ceased during the mid-to-late 1800s, it was revived in the 1980s during the redevelopment of Klein Constantia Estate. Early records were studied and careful selection made from vines which, in all likelihood, came from the original stock used in Constantia 300 years ago. Vin de Constance is a late-harvest style made from Muscat de Frontignan (aka Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains) grapes, without botrytis.

While similar in color to the 2017, the 2018 Vin de Constance Natural Sweet Wine possesses a richer, rounder frame than the previous vintage. Devastatingly gorgeous on the nose, the wine exudes ripeness, precision and focus, somersaulting out of the glass with gorgeous aromas of apricot purée, white nectarine and yellow peach with heady floral aromas. Compact, medium to full-bodied and unctuous on the palate, the wine explodes, showcasing the greatness of Muscat. The wine continues to unfold in the mouth, expressing additional layers and complexity it sits on the palate. It's wonderfully textured, and I find myself almost chewing the wine, as there is so much going on with it. Drawing in air over the palate, I continue to slurp the wine and it continues to offer up more of its secrets and complexity. No spitting today. The wine glides to a persistent and world-class finish that has me smitten with this vintage. Do not pass up the opportunity to try this wine. Drink 2022 - 2065.

Anthony Mueller - Wine Advocate (Jun 2022)The 2018 Vin de Constance was picked over 60 days, the second most prolonged picking since the maiden 1986 vintage. It was lightly pressed into 500-liter barrels for alcoholic fermentation, which can take up to six months, then matured on the gross lees in 60% new oak and acacia barrels. This vintage contains 172g/L residual sugar and 6.2g/L total acidity. It presents a vibrant, effervescent bouquet of freshly sliced grapefruit, fresh fig and citrus fruit, all penetrating, vivacious and tensile. The palate is beautifully balanced with a fine bead of acidity, impressive weight and notes of grapefruit and orange zest plus hints of stem ginger. The spiciness is accentuated toward the finish. Another outstanding Vin de Constance courtesy of winemaker Matt Day. Drink 2022 - 2045.

Neal Martin - VinousExtraordinary aromas of white peaches, apricots, vanilla and flowers. Full-bodied and very sweet with so much sweet and dried fruit, such as apricots and tangerines, yet it maintains citrusy freshness and texture, with a long, very sweet finish. Always energetic and vivid. Great length to this. Goes on for minutes. It’s a sweet wine to drink when young, to marvel over the intensity and verve, yet also one to age for decades. Drink or hold.

Although I have tasted the 2007 Vin de Constance on several occasions, this was the first time professionally. It has an explosive bouquet that sprints out of the blocks with a more effervescent, vivacious personality than the 2008. Citrus lemon, Seville orange marmalade, touches of mandarin and a dash of spice all vie for attention. The aromatics are more Sauternes-like than the 2008. The palate is very well-balanced with a viscous opening, a keen thread of acidity and a bewitching sense of poise and focus. This is probably the finest Vin de Constance to date as it fans out marvellously on the multi-layered finish. This is a startling, world-class wine that gives Yquem a run for its money.

Neal Martin - Wine Advocate (Oct 2013)Although released by the new management team, the final blend was put together by the previous owner. This rich, nutty, unctuous sweet wine has less pronounced floral notes with more umami and mushroom character. It feels like a Vin de Constance from a different era. 2007 was an excellent year with a cool growing season and a dry, warm, late summer, leading to residual sugar of 177g/l. With the acidity standing out a bit less than in the 2008, this fine wine is drinking beautifully now.

The 2012 Vin de Constance is limpid golden in color. It has a pure honeyed bouquet that blossoms in the glass to reveal irresistible scents of apricot, quince, pressed flowers and saffron, gaining intensity with aeration and turning almost overwhelming after several minutes. The palate is beautifully defined with outstanding acidity and energy. This is wonderfully poised, perhaps more so than the 2016 tasted alongside. Tension on the finish coupled with salinity keeps you returning for more. Outstanding.

We finish with the 2014 Vin de Constance from Klein Constantia, which shows identically to the bottle tasted in the Cape earlier this year. The bouquet bursts from the glass with marmalade, honeysuckle, orange rind and tropical fruit, all beautifully defined, if perhaps just a little waxier than I recall. The lively, viscous palate presents layers of fresh apricot, honey and orange zest, leading to a precise, vibrant finish. I love the chutzpah of this Vin de Constance, and though it will age, I do not begrudge anyone drinking it now.

Boasting a juicy and fruity nose, the 2017 Vin de Constance Natural Sweet Wine is pale gold in the glass with a delightfully concentrated stone fruit essences that sway with elements of white peach, nectarine, dried apricot, apple and quince purée before notions of jasmine honeysuckle waft from the nose. Medium to full-bodied, the wine displays a succulent peach nectar flavor as it effortlessly glides across the mid-palate, flaunting with elegance and finesse. The juicy acidity framed with the layers of fruit and floral context leaves me just staring at my glass while the wine continues to evolve and unfold in the mouth. The wine coasts to an elongated finish that will have you picking your glass up again sooner than you know. Bravo! Drink 2022 - 2060.

jamessuckling.comThe 2017 Vin de Constance is lucid silvery-straw in hue. It is beautifully defined on the nose, featuring scents of dried honey, almond, praline and pressed yellow flowers, perhaps borrowing some of the airiness of the 2016 vintage. The palate is underpinned by a keen line of acidity that effortlessly counterbalances the richness of this 2017, making it one of the easiest sweet wines to drink in its youth. It conveys plenty of energy with a very persistent orange peel, quince and marmalade finish, then a spicy aftertaste. Sublime. Sample sent from Klein Constantia.

2016 Klein Constantia Vin de Constance (500ml)Constantia, SOUTH AFRICA$125. 00Bottle$1500.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: CorkVin de Constance is a late-harvest style made from Muscat de Frontignan (aka Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains) grapes, without botrytis. 10% of the Muscat is picked early, to make a base wine at 12.5–13 % alcohol with good acidity. The remaining grapes are left to accumulate sugar, and leaf removal exposes the fruit to the sun, which helps raisin the remaining grapes. Then, picking takes place in three passages through the vineyard. Altogether, around 10% of the crop will be raisins. If the raisins have lots of sugar left in the skins, then the base wine is used to flush the flavour out.
The skins are pressed quite hard as tannins are an important part of the style. It’s not possible to settle this dirty juice, so it goes to barrels for fermentation. These barrels are 500 litres and the wine stays in these on gross lees for up to four years.
History
In the 18th and 19th centuries “the sweet luscious and excellent wine of Constantia” was recognised as one of the great wines of the world, savoured by royalty and given pride of place in the cellars of the world’s greatest wine collectors. Although production ceased during the mid-to-late 1800s, the legend lived on – immortalised in the poetry and prose of the great writers of the 18th and 19th centuries, from Austen to Dickens, from Dumas to Baudelaire. The wine also remained vibrantly alive – in old bottles discovered in some of Europe’s most famous cellars. In the 1980s, during the redevelopment of Klein Constantia Estate (a sub-division of the original Constantia estate granted to Cape commander Simon van der Stel in 1685), everyone involved was inspired to resurrect the legendary wine. Early records were studied and careful selection made from vines which, in all likelihood, came from the original stock used in Constantia 300 years ago.
Over a century since its disappearance came the renaissance – Vin de Constance – a wine made in the style of the old Constantia, from vineyards celebrated since the late 1600s.

The 2016 Vin de Constance is matured in 50% French acacia oak, Hungarian oak and regular French oak, and 50% in French foudres. This has more delineation and precision on the nose compared to the previous vintage, offering acacia honey, quince, saffron and touches of elderflower in the background. The palate is very well balanced with fine precision, a killer line of acidity and disarming purity toward a finish that lingers in the mouth. Stunning.

The 2015 Perdeblokke Limited Release is a single vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, stainless steel for two-thirds of the fermentation with one-third in barrel (neutral French with thick staves). It has that loam, nettle and almost "mulch-like" scent on the pungent nose, a hint of fresh asparagus with time. The palate is well balanced with a slightly raw entry. I would like a little more cohesion here, although the unexpected sweetness that I compared to Japanese sweets, almost akin to mochi, was welcome on the aftertaste. Drink by 2024.

The 2020 Trockenbeerenauslese No. 4 Grande Cuvée Nouvelle Vague is based on 70% Welschriesling (vinified in large oak casks) and 30% Chardonnay (aged in barriques) and opens with an intense and concentrated bouquet with spicy quince aromas, lemon chutney, candied lemons, ripe and lush apricots and pineapples, hints of nougat, caramel and salt. It is very deep and complex but also refined, fresh and very elegant! Round, intense and highly refined on the palate, this is a saline and elegant, seemingly weightless Grande Cuvée that develops a spectacularly long and intense finish with salts and concentrated fruits such as melons, apricots, lemons, quinces and grapefruit. The aftertaste is intense and very long but of great finesse and elegance. This is a gorgeous wine, indeed, that is stunning a day after the opening and will need about a decade or more to gain even more complexity. 10% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Drink 2030-2055.

Stephan Reinhardt – Robert Parker’s The Wine AdvocateThe second release on the Place de Bordeaux, and a stunning wine from Gerhard Kracher in 2020. Beautifully honeyed caramel, lemon, peach and apricot notes on the nose, candied, dried and fresh with salted caramel and biscuit aromas too. Freshness straight away, a scintillating acidity that lifts the expression instantly and gives energy, life and focus. This is sweet no doubt, and you feel the richness in the weight and texture, but it also has this amazing salty, minerality underneath not only giving nuance and complexity but offsetting the sugary, ginger, cinnamon, pineapple and pear mid palate. A wonderfully compelling wine, with so much crystalline purity and ease about it. Defined, focussed, interesting and perfectly balanced. I absolutely adore it! 210g residual sugar. 7.6g/l acidity. Chardonnay fermented in barriques and Welschriesling in large wooden barrels for 30 months. Drink: 2023-2050.
