A discreet application of wood sets off notes of white pepper, acacia blossom, spice and just enough Chablis typicity to be interesting. On the palate there is again both good volume and refinement to the generously proportioned middle weight flavors that possess a sappy texture while displaying solid length on the youthfully austere finale. This too could use better depth so at least a few years of keeping should prove to be beneficial. Drink through 2029+.

Smoke and light wood nuances set off cool floral and spicy aromas of freshly grated citrus, white peach, honeysuckle and tidal pool wisps. There is again fine intensity to the dense and stony broad-shouldered flavors that flash fine length on the ever-so-mildly warm finale where a touch of youthful austerity slowly emerges. This refreshing effort is so rich that it should drink reasonably well young but the better choice would be to allow it to age for at least a few years as it could also use more overall depth. Drink through 2033+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundWith the 2023 Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos Hommage à Louis, the Droins have regained the right to designate Les Clos on the label from the INAO, but they're also continuing with the Hommage à Louis moniker. Whatever its name, the wine is lovely, opening in the glass with notes of green apple, peach and lemon mingled with iodine and toasted nuts, followed by a full-bodied, layered and concentrated palate that's deep, dense and muscular. Drink 2027-2045.

More prominent smoky mineral reduction wisps are present on the more elegant aromas of acacia blossom, iodine and shellfish. There is outstanding size, weight and richness to the large-scaled flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract while a pronounced stoniness becomes apparent on the compact, built-to-age and beautifully long finish. This too is very good and should have no trouble repaying a decade or so of cellaring. Drink through 2032+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2022 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru Hommage à Louis has quite a malic, green apple and Anjou pear-scented nose that unfurls beautifully in the glass. The palate is taut and linear, with moderate depth, clamming up slightly towards the finish compared with the Grenouilles or Valmur. Drink 2027-2040.

Neal Martin - VinousThe issue of being allowed to call their holding Les Clos is nearly resolved but not in time for 2022. One of the paler colours. A gorgeous classical nose, as if this great vineyard knows best how to resist the climate. This wine has a tightly coiled intensity clearly over and above the rest of the range. Pure white fruit with a little touch of liquorice, it will certainly build into a relatively rich expression of Les Clos, but will maintain its precision and integrity. Very fine. Drink from 2030-2040+.

Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyA cuvée sourced from three plots ranging from cailloux-dominated soils to the east by Blanchot; blue-clay soils in the central area; and blue-clay/brown clay in the western plot beneath Valmur. A ripe but agreeably cool nose combines an array of spice elements with those of oyster shell, pear and pretty floral wisps. The super-sleek and wonderfully refined medium weight flavors aren't particularly dense but they do offer a beguiling sense of energy that also suffuses the very dry, focused and highly persistent finale. Like the MdT, this too could use better depth though more should almost certainly develop if given a chance. Drink through 2030+.
91-94 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2022 Chablis Vaudésir Grand Cru is very fragrant on the nose with white peach, white chocolate and hints of wet stone scents, like a Vaillons-plus. The palate is well-defined, taut and fresh, with crisp acidity and good depth, but it starts to clam up towards the finish. Patience will be required, but there is no doubting the caliber of this Grand Cru. Drink 2027-2040.

Neal Martin - Vinous40% oak. A clear pale lemon colour with a light green tint. There is an attractive smoky touch adding to the mineral freshness of the bouquet. Then the additional richness of fruit on the palate which this vintage gives. Even so, the fruit profile is the usual concentrated white fruit I expect from Vaudésir. A fine long finish. Drink from 2029-2038.

This is also ripe but agreeably cool with its very fresh aromas of green fruit, just sliced citrus and oyster shell wisps. There is exceptionally good volume and richness to the more concentrated and markedly more powerful larger-bodied flavors that deliver excellent depth and persistence on the robust finale. This won't win any awards for refinement but then again, refinement isn't why one buys Valmur. Drink through 2030+.
92-94 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2022 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru has a very aromatic bouquet with apple blossom, white peach, wet stone and light praline scents - complex. The palate is delineated and sapid on the entry, quite strict with quince and peach hints towards the sustained finish. Classy, if just missing the killer blow. Drink 2025-2037.
92-94 points
Neal Martin - Vinous40% oak. A clear mid yellow. There is a saltiness to the bouquet which Benoît considers a hallmark. A big round ball of fruit on the palate, white rather than yellow, then back to the marine character to finish. A very solid wine suited to white meats more than fish. Fine persistence. Drink from 2029-2038.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2022 Chablis Vaucopin 1er Cru, aged entirely in tank, has a crisp, slightly yeasty bouquet that feels quite primal at the moment, even compared to the Chablis Village. A discreet application of wood sets off the more elegant aromas of citrus-tinged green apple and maritime scents. The rich, delicious and relatively refined medium-weight flavors exude a discreet minerality on the very dry, moderately austere and lingering finale. An appealingly layered nose mixes notes of green fruit, mineral reduction and various citrus elements with a hint of algae. The round, delicious and anise-inflected flavors are at once caressing and mouth coating thanks to the abundance of sappy dry extract that buffers the moderately firm acidity shaping the lingering finish. This will need to develop better complexity, but the projected aging curve should permit it to improve. Drink 2027+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Chablis Grenouilles Grand Cru has a well-defined bouquet of undergrowth, limestone and light floral scents, although at the moment it does not deliver the panache of the Valmur. The palate is very harmonious and concentrated, delivering fine depth and salinity, and quite rich toward the persistent finish. Very fine, though not top of the Droin class. Drink 2024 - 2048.
92-94 points
Neal Martin - VinousFresh pale lemon yellow. The power is showing, but not yet the detail. This has the most oak in the blend, but I can scarcely see the wood. Rich pure and concentrated, with an impressive weight of fruit throughout, follows on nicely from Valmur. Generous gourmand sucrosity is present but the wine should retain its balance.

Here too the nose is largely dominated by notes of smoky mineral reduction, acacia blossom, citrus rind and soft wood. There is excellent intensity to the admirably pure middle weight plus flavors that exude an inviting salinity on the detailed and hugely long finish that presently displays a hint of sweetness that I don't expect to last. This is potentially terrific. Drink 2030+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Chablis Hommage a Louis Grand Cru has an already irresistible bouquet of beautifully defined yellow fruit, limestone, red apple and white peachy aromas. The palate is very harmonious, distinctly saline and quite powerful. The intense, spicy finish lingers in the mouth. This will surely vie with the Valmur for supremacy come bottling. Outstanding. Drink 2025 - 2050.

Neal Martin - Vinous2020 marks the centenary of the first vintage of Les Clos made by Benoît Droin’s great-great-grandfather Louis (who was followed by Marcel, Paul, Jean-Paul and now Benoît. Les Clos is not mentioned on the label because of a current administrative spat where the Douanes (customs) and the INAO have a different opinion as to whether a particular plot should be classified as Clos or Valmur. With a bit of luck this should be resolved soon. In any case, the 2020 has a wonderful white fruit nose, really elegant and stylish. The grip here is exceptional with a spectacular intensity and no undue heat or sucrosity: a wonderful wine in the making.

An interesting and relatively broad-ranging nose includes notes of white pepper, iodine, quinine and pretty floral scents. The plump, round and fleshy flavors possess a beguiling texture but not the same intensity and particularly so on the borderline fat finish. To be clear, this is by no means heavy or lacking vibrancy, but it seems clear that it should be drunk on the earlier side compared to many of these 1ers. Drink 2023+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundAromas of peach, apricot, honey, white flowers and iodine preface the 2019 Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons, a medium to full-bodied, satiny and charming wine that's the most demonstrative premier cru in the cellar this year. Drink 2023 - 2040.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Aug 2021)Fresh lemon colour. Saline nose right from the start. Ripe enough to have, some floral touches to the bouquet as well. The 2019 Chablis 1er Cru Montmains opens in the glass with notes of green orchard fruit, hazelnuts, clear honey, fresh bread and oyster shell. Medium to full-bodied, layered and muscular, with chalky grip and a saline finish, it has turned out very well.
92 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Aug 2021)A smoky nose of mineral reduction, grapefruit and oyster shell introduces dense and almost painfully intense flavors that are supported by citrus-tinged acidity on the powerful and focused finish. Though tightly wound at present, I suspect that this will flesh out relatively quickly.

The 2019 Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles is excellent, mingling aromas of citrus zest, orange oil, pastry, beeswax, ginger and iodine in an incipiently complex bouquet. Full-bodied, satiny and layered, with a concentrated core of fruit and bright girdling acids, it concludes with a long, saline finish. This is already very integrated and complete, but the real fireworks will come with bottle age.
95 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Aug 2021)This too is moderately reduced with some post-bottling sulfur in evidence so again, I would advise decanting it first if you're going to crack a bottle upon release. More interesting are the round, caressing and solidly intense flavors that possess the best concentration in the entire range while delivering positively huge length on the markedly spicy finish. I was seriously impressed with this and moreover, it's rare that the Grenouilles outperforms both the Les Clos and Vaudésir chez Droin.
94 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundPale colour, but offering a powerful nose, with its characteristic spices. This is very harmonious on the palate, fills the mouth, waves of clean fresh fruit come through at the back. Grenouilles can live with the style of the vintage. 50% wood does not show. Lovely balanced complex aftertaste. This wine slightly exceeds 14% alcohol, but if any one Chablis vineyard can cope with that, it is Grenouilles.

The 2019 Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos is similarly impressive, unwinding in the glass with notes of citrus zest, confit lemon, iodine, freshly baked bread, nutmeg and smoke. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's taut and concentrated, with chalky extract, racy acids and a long, penetrating finish. This, too, is even more than usually structured and will require and reward bottle age.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Aug 2021)A wonderfully broad nose features notes of oyster shell, white flowers, iodine, yellow orchard fruit and a whiff of quinine. The intense and palate coating larger-scaled flavors exude evident minerality on the focused, very firm and impressively persistent finish. This needs to develop better depth, but the solid acid spine makes clear that this is a wine to put away and forget for at least 5 to 7 years.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundPale brilliant clear colour, a nose of immense quality, little touches of iodine in with the pure white fruit. Stone fruit with, some shellfish touches. Superb, a wine, which should hold together for decades.

Subtle but not invisible wood sets off aromas of white flowers, citrus, a whiff of exotic fruit and wet chalk. The rich yet elegantly textured medium weight flavors possess a lovely sense of underlying tension before terminating in a focused and exceptionally long finish. This is noticeably firmer than any of the prior wines and a wine that should age effortlessly over most of the next decade.

The 2019 Chablis Grand Cru Valmur unwinds in the glass with scents of crisp green orchard fruit, fresh bread, iodine and dried white flowers. Full-bodied, satiny and layered, it's deep and concentrated, with racy acids, chalky structuring dry extract and a long, saline finish. This is another serious, built-to-age bottling from Droin.
94+ points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Aug 2021)There is just enough reduction present to push the green fruit and vaguely exotic aromas to the background so be sure to give this a thorough aeration if you're going to try a bottle young. Otherwise, there is excellent density to the dense if slightly rustic big-bodied flavors that display noticeable warmth on the solidly persistent finish. This is an imposing and powerful Valmur where the balance isn't quite as well dialed in as the best in the range.
