- 2022 Francois Mikulski Meursault Charmes Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$590. 00Bottle$7080.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: Cork
François Mikulski has quietly earned a place among Meursault’s most respected producers, known for wines that prioritise purity, energy, and mineral precision. His focus is on clarity and freshness across the board — whether it’s Aligoté or Premier Cru — with élevage and viticulture carefully tuned to preserve site and structure. Stylistically, the wines lean toward the racy, tensile end of the Meursault spectrum, in the vein of Roulot or Carillon. They’re built to age, but always with a drink-now brightness that keeps you coming back for another glass.
Other Reviews....
Much like the Limozin, the expressive nose is perfumed and elegant with its cool array of just sliced citrus, smoked apple and subtle floral and spice wisps. There is excellent punch to the beautifully textured medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the balanced and sneaky long finish. Like several of the wines in the range, this could use better depth but it is clearly built-to-age and developing more complexity should just be a matter of patience. Drink through 2032+.

The 2020 Savagnin Cuvée du Professeur has a noble reduction, flinty and smoky like gunpowder, and still spicy, with some subtle curry. There's a fine balance between reduction and oxidation. This takes the best from both worlds and is fine-boned and elegant, with contained ripeness and vibrant acidity. It's very tasty and has a smoky aftertaste. He has three hectares in Sous Roche and can produce some 10,000 bottles (in 2022, there'll be 15,000!). Drink 2024-2035.

Luis Gutiérrez - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe complex 2020 Savagnin Côtes du Jura Cuvée du Professeur unwinds with prominent notes of saffron, dried chamomile, ripe pear, yellow apple and a touch of jasmine. Powerful and concentrated, the 2020 is a transparent reflection of the warm vintage, but the steely acidity cuts through like a scalpel, flawlessly preserving freshness. Focused, persistent and saline on the finish, the 2020 is simply awesome. Drink 2024-2035.

The lieu-dit underneath the big rock of Château Chalon is the best known and most prestigious, and it's the source for the 2017 Côtes du Jura Savagnin Cuvée du Professeur Sous Roche. This Savagnin would have the right to be called Château Chalon if it was aged sous voile for six years, but because it matured in topped-up barrels for 14 to 16 months, it's a Côtes du Jura, a choice of Russet-Martin. Yields were catastrophically low in 2017, and there are only 1,500 of this (but there will be some 4,000 in 2018). It's a bit spicy, and I guess it must have had some traces of flor, which give it the Jura character. It matured in oak barrels from Burgundy, and it's faintly oxidative. Cuvée du Professeur makes reference to his father who still owns this vineyard.

Since Roman times, the wines from the area around Château-Chalon were highly appreciated. The Benedictine monks founded the Abbey of Saint-Pierre in nearby Baume-les-Messieurs in 909 AD, this had a direct impact on local viticulture. For centuries, Château-Chalon has become world famous for its inimitable Vins Jaunes. The reputation of these wines brought the inhabitants of the village almost aristocratic wealth. The appreciation for the Vin Jaune is unbroken until today. And Château-Chalon offers the highest quality terroirs for the production of oxidatively matured wines from the Savagnin grape. This is now increasingly true for wines of the non-oxidative ouillé style. This is a complex beauty and aged 8 years instead of the customary 6 sous voile.

This is from very venerable terroir, named after one of the plots in Château Chalon that has limestone soils with some stones and marl. It has superb aromas of yellow fruits, spice, and a twist of Islay malt whisky complexed by an irresistible mineral lift. It's powerful and very complex in the mouth with serious depth and complexity. It's very young now and will start to unfurl over the coming years and then keep for the next 20 or more.

François was still selling grapes to the cooperative in 2017, which was also the year of the frost, so there is very little wine. Since 2015, he has used no sulfites, and the vineyards are organically farmed but not certified. One of the most successful wines from this challenging year is the 2017 Côtes du Jura Chardonnay Terres Blanches, which was aged in topped-up 600-liter oak barrels for 15 months. It shows very good precision and tickles your tongue and leaves a faintly smoky aftertaste. It's named after the white soils where the vines grow in the village of Lavigny.

Even if what I tasted was not exactly the final blend, I sampled a 50/50 blend of Savagnin and Chardonnay that will be one of the components of the 2018 Côtes du Jura Mémée Marie, where the Savagnin ages sous voile for a few months and then is blended with the Chardonnay and matured exclusively in stainless steel. This wine set the tone of the tasting, showing the clean style and simplicity of fruit of this cuvée of Savagnin grown on gray marl soils and Chardonnay grown on stonier soils. It shows a little medicinal but is serious, dry, tasty and easy to drink. This white is named after his grandmother.

Stuart Pigott - JamesSuckling.comThe 2020er Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese, as it is referred to on the consumer label and with a golden capsule, was made from partially botrytized grapes harvested at 110-115° Oechsle and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar. It proves still hugely reductive and only gradually reveals a highly aromatic and ripe nose of exotic fruits (mango, guava, passion fruit, and roasted pineapple), as well as toffee, minty herbs, William’s pear, and acacia. The wine proves juicy and fully fruity with quite some exotic presence on the subtly honeyed palate and leaves a sense of pure notes of mango, tangerine, and candied grapefruit wrapped into some zesty elements in the gorgeously playful finish. This noble-sweet wine now only needs some patience to integrate its elements and reveal its full potential. Drink 2030-2060.

In 2019, Oliver Haag has succeeded again in producing an outstanding series of Rieslings, which includes the estate wine with concentration and length that is spectacular in this price range. After all, the grapes come exclusively from steep slopes, premier crus if you like, which are more in the side valleys, are inclined to the south and benefit from the cooling down wind like the Sonnenlay with its fine slate soil. The low yield in 2019 and the mostly old vines provide undreamt-of density and complexity here. It is a "Wine of the Year" for me and can hardly be surpassed in its price range.

The 2019 Brauneberg Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Trocken GG is very fine, flinty, delicate and charming on the precise and beautifully articulated slatey and herbal nose that also displays highly refined and discreet tropical fruit aromas. However, the nose is remarkably shy at this early stage. On the palate, this is a lithe Juffer Sonnenuhr with great finesse and a pure, mineral, persistently salty and crunchy finish that doesn't show much fruit and power at this stage. This seems to be a rather ascetic yet piquant and salty Riesling, and I am curious how the wine will develop over the next six months. The finish is very long, intense and still dominated by yeasty notes. This will develop to a spectacular JSU with time.

The 2019 Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese is highly refined on the nose and shows delicately aromatic fruit with a nose-tickling minerality of crushed stones and herbs. Round and juicy as well as highly finessed and salty on the palate, this is a fantastic sweet Riesling. It is so fine and filigreed, so delicate and salty that you don't taste any sweetness here—just a dream of the finest Mosel Riesling. This is dangerously good, piquant and tensioned, and you will drink a bottle far too quickly. An outrageous Auslese!

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Aug 2020)A breathtakingly filigree 2019 Mosel masterpiece with spot-on balance of concentration and mouthwatering acidity. Fresh enough to wake the dead at the pure, long finish.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comThe 2019er Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese was made from clean fruit harvested at 98° Oechsle, and was fermented down to fully sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a quite captivating and ripe nose of honeyed elements including apricot, yellow peach, marzipan, strawberry, and a hint of mango. The wine is still fully on the sweet side on the palate driven by plenty of ripe and creamy exotic fruits. It leaves a hugely long and gorgeously creamy and honeyed feel in the finish. This sweet wine already flirts with Auslese GK presence and richness, but remains fascinating thanks to its multi-layered complexity and finesse.

The 2019 Brauneberg Juffer Riesling Trocken GG is precise and pure on the intense, complex and beautifully flinty nose. Full-bodied and intense on the palate, this is a pretty rich and concentrated yet tightly structured and mineral Juffer with a long, complex, persistently salty and stimulating finish with the grip of crushing slate. Highly promising.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Aug 2020)Wait a moment, because this has some funk from wild ferment that will need some time to blow off. However, behind that is a ripe, concentrated and graceful wine with a very long, filigree, mineral finish.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comThe 2019er Juffer Riesling Trocken GG, as it is referred to on the consumer label, was fermented and aged in a mix of stainless-steel tank, Fuder, and large oak barrel. It offers a gorgeously complex nose of yellow flowers, tangerine, grapefruit, candied and grilled lime, almond cream, herbs, and smoke. The wine comes over as incredibly playful on the palate and manages to maintain a high level of airiness despite all the complexity at play. The finish is bone-dry and driven by a tickly, ripe, and zesty kick of acidity. Some superbly salty elements add to the incredible charm and complexity of this magnificent dry wine in the after-taste. This is easily the finest expression of Juffer GG we have ever tasted.

The 2019 Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese (Gold Capsule) is a beauty close to perfection. It displays intense, perfectly ripe, healthy and refined raisin fruit on the nose along with tropical hints, herbal notes and dashes of lemon juice, while the stony/mineral expressions remain rather in the background but still add excitement and distinction. On the palate, this is an incredibly juicy, piquant, refined, salty and weightless yet intense Riesling with concentrated but highly stimulating fruit. The finish is long and amazing in its sensual finesse and elegance. This is a digestible, concentrated and energetic Auslese that comes very close to perfection.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comThe 2019er Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese GK was made from partially botrytized grapes harvested at 120-125° Oechsle and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a most captivating nose of botrytized fruit as scents of mango, passion fruit, honeyed peach, dried apricot, pineapple, whipped cream, herbs, and smoke. The wine proves gorgeously unctuous and creamy on the fully sweet and creamy palate. A touch of power and a feel of intensity are brilliantly wrapped into magically focused and zesty elements in the finish. The persistence and aromatic purity are just stunning. This noble-sweet needs more than a full decade to integrate its richness and fully show its full nuances, but the patience will be rewarded.

2022 Georg Breuer Berg Schlossberg RieslingRheingau, GERMANY$280. 00Bottle$3360.00 DozenABV: 11.5%Closure: CorkGeorg Breuer estate was founded in 1880 as part of a wine merchant company, and has been owned by the Breuer family since the beginning of the 20th century. Georg Breuer enlarged the estate and increased the export of wines. His sons Bernhard and Heinrich and later Bernhard’s daughter Theresa expanded the vineyard size to 40 hectares in the best Rüdesheim, Rauenthal and Lorch sites. Theresa Breuer was thrust into the business after the sudden passing of her father in 2004, and through tireless work and dedication is now one of the most respected winemaking forces in Germany. The estate's focus is on top dry Riesling wines from the unique terroir of the Rheingau valley, and Breuer's flagship crus are Rüdesheim Berg Schlossberg and the 12.5-acre monopole, Rauenthal Nonnenberg.
Georg Breuer has vines on 3.5 hectares of the Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg. With a gradient of 70%, this is the steepest vineyard in the Rheingau. Its name derives from the Ehrenfels castle ruins above the Rhine Gorge. Heat-absorbing weathered slate with loess and loam give ideal ripening conditions for Riesling which thrives on the high mineral content of the soil. Farming is 100% organic (Georg Breuer is certified by Fair & Green). 100% healthy, ripe fruit, no maceration, whole cluster pressing, fermentation in old German wooden barrels (600-litre and 1,200 -litre), one racking after the fermentation and then a storage period on the fine lees for about seven months.

Sourced from nine different parcels, the 2022 Berg Schlossberg opens with a deep, pure and intensely mineral bouquet with notes of crushed stones and even iodine and a dash of lemon juice. Full-bodied, round and very elegant on the palate, this is an intense, silky textured and persistently saline Berg Schlossberg with delicate bitters on the finely structured and still discreetly astringent finish. It has stunning complexity and refined acidity with grapefruit bitters on the mineral finish. This 2022 has excellent aging potential. 11.5% stated alcohol. Diam cork. Tasted at the domaine in September 2023. Drink 2029-2050.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Dec 30, 2023)According to Breuer, the 2022 Riesling Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg is the wine that shows most facets of the Rüdesheimer Berg. This is usually picked in fully south- and south-west-facing parcels, differing in altitude. In 2022, however, the core south-facing parcel was omitted, as the grapes were too stressed, so this is mostly of southwest-facing parcels. Hazelnut, apricot and cream speak tenderly on the nose. The palate is fresh and has much texture and concentration, yet the body is slender. Yeastiness combines with lemon pith on the palate and is countered by a gentle nuttiness. The picture is of compactness with a salty, lemony edge that makes the mouth water. Bright, unfrilly, clean-cut, resonant. (Bone-dry) Drink 2023-2035.

The vineyard site Pfaffenwies was initially mentioned as ‘pafenwies’ in documents from 1211, and later as ‘pfaffenwissen’ (1235). It was named after Pastor Dydo, also known as ‘Pfaffe’. This steep site has a gradient of up to 45% and is situated between 90 to 160m above sea level. The soil is a combination of stony Hunsrück slate and Taunus quartzite, with loess in the lower parts. Riesling from this area is characterised by great elegance as well as pronounced acidity and minerality.
Other Reviews....
The 2020 Pfaffenwies is sourced in the upper and lower plots of the cru, whereas in 2019, it was sourced just in the lower vineyards and the top section as well as the younger middle part went into the Terra Montosa. The bouquet is fascinating in its slatey/flinty purity and lemon-scented intensity with just a hint of oak. Vinified in oak like the Montosa, this is a full-bodied, pure, fresh and mineral Pfaffenwies with power, salt and grip and enormous length and complexity. Power and texture meet grip and salinity here, and although the 2020 is still a baby, it is highly promising. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in July 2022. Drink 2025 - 2045.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate #234 (Dec 2017)Scents of white peach, lime and marjoram are accompanied by hints of ocean breeze and quarry dust. Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate #234 (Dec 2017)Scents of white peach, lime and marjoram are accompanied by hints of ocean breeze and quarry dust. The silken palate brims with bright fruit accented by smoky, pungent green herbs and with a sense of crushed stone suffusion. The combination of palpable extract-richness with alcoholic levity (at 11.5%) is striking. The vibrant finish delivers a mouthwatering abundance of mineral salts and displays superb transparency to herbal, crystalline stony, slatey and smoky nuances.

David Schildknecht - VinousDeep as the Grand Canyon, but only as wide as the Rhine Valley, where the river turns into the narrow gorge next to this steep vineyard site. Super-long mineral finish that's totally pure and crystalline. Drink or hold.

2017 Georg Breuer Estate Rudesheim RieslingRheingau, GERMANY$39. 99Bottle$479.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 6 Years (2020-2026)ABV: 12%Closure: StelvinBrilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Aromas of lime and red apple have a light oily kerosene like overlay followed by wet steel and mineral notes. Racy lime, green and red apple flavours as well of traces of orange blossom have a zingy feel across the palate. Excellent intensity with wet steel and flinty mineral elements underscoring the fruit. Dry, crisp, lip smacking finish with a long, focused steely mineral infused aftertaste.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

From the Rheingau, the tiniest appellation in Germany.br> Honey toast, green apple, faint peach notes, bright perfume despite the fruitiness. Palate is juicy but cut well with brisk, glass shard edges, good length, vitality. Faint herb and fennel notes on green apple flavours, something talc-like, steely notes. Sheesh, this has a lot going on. Brilliant. Drink 2019-2035.

Use this crisp and elegant dry riesling as you would a Chablis, because that's the kind of dry balance and long, clean-mineral finish it has. With aeration, plenty of apples and pears fruit unfold. From organically grown grapes. Fair’n Green certification. Good aging potential. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
