Partially barrel fermented (40%). The fruit flavours themselves are the key here, they're just so intense and so striking, all lime and green pineapple, apple skins and lemon meringue pie. There's a textural element and a tautness, but that fruit, wow, it's a force to be reckoned with. Drink by 2032.

Smelling this is like walking through a cottage garden full of spring flowers especially fragrant with lime blossom. At first, it feels light and delicate but there’s more to come: texture, juiciness, a waft of wet pebbles, there’s an intensity yet fineness, too, a slip of texture and excellent length. A compelling offering now but this will last a distance. Can you wait? Drink by 2036.

    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 13.2%
    Closure: Diam Cork

Situated 610 meters above sea level and overseeing Central Victoria, the Cobaw Ridge vines thrive in the granite-rich mountain soil, working hard to produce well-balanced grapes. This unique site's challenges, combined with the Cooper's dedication to sustainable and natural practices, result in wines that truly reflect their origin and time. No additives, fining, filtration, or stabilization are applied, except for minimal sulphites before bottling. The grapes are whole bunch pressed, settled overnight in a tank, then transferred to French oak (25% new). A slow, natural fermentation occurs in the barrel over 12 months, followed by an additional 3 months in a tank to settle on the lees. Full malolactic fermentation takes place, and the wine is not filtered, with only a small SO2 addition.

    Special wine, special site.
It’s all the things. Texture, weight, vim and vigour, minerally, gently savoury, pure in fruit character, fragrant and extends beautifully and long in the palate. Scents and flavours of green apple, ginger, almond, sea spray and brine, licks of pink grapefruit and a sizzle of tart lime. All woven so brilliantly together and bound in crystalline-meets-chalky texture. It’s a little nervous, a little skittish, tightly wound and briskly refreshing. I love it. Drink 2024 - 2035.

The Basket Town Chardonnay comes from three locations in the Adelaide Hills: Kas Sluiter Vineyard in Mylor, Dave Fresci's Piccadilly Vineyard in Carey Gully, and Commune of Buttons Vineyard in Basket Range. Due to cooler conditions, the fruit ripened about two weeks later than usual, around late March. Each portion underwent whole bunch pressing and was transferred to a mix of barriques, hogsheads, and puncheons. After maturing for eight months on full lees, the wines were blended and moved to a tank for an additional three months of maturation.

The classic match for oysters, though I’d rather drink the wine and leave the oysters to someone else. So much crunch and brine, with green apple, lemon zest and some floral top notes. Piquepoul is known for its retention of acidity in the hot Mediterranean climate of southern France, and it brings that quality to McLaren Vale, where the Lloyd family regards it as a favourite variety. Its acidity is coupled with a lemony flavour in this iteration. Drink to 2029.

Great to see these mature release wines from Crawford River. Prophetic review from CM from the young release too…
This is flying. Beautiful wine marrying gentle maturity in characters of lightly toasted white bread, honeysuckle, wild honey, candle wax and yet impossible freshness of Granny Smith apple and lime. The palate is bright albeit gently slippery with age, more of the secondary characters of the bouquet and still holding a compact, racy form. The finish is almost sparkling with pink grapefruit and gin-like botanical zestiness. Stellar. Drink 2023 - 2030+

All hail Crawford River riesling! The top dog from the top dog!
It’s magnificent. A schooling in riesling beauty, tension, texture, vitality, layers of fruit, spice, yeasty elements and a persistence that can’t be beat. If anything, a little more understated than other Reserve rieslings from CR, not quite delicate but playing to a more gentle strength. Fragrant, with a fog of fruit and spice, flavoursome but in a sheath of lightly puckering texture. Stains the palate gently too. I like that the wine has character, not set to a standard, loaded with character. Vibrant through that great trail of the finish. Stellar stuff. Drink 2023 - 2035+

This is one of the most straight up delicious releases I have tried. Moreish to the max. It’s succulent in texture, which is important, which means it’s juicy but also has chalky pucker. perfect. This one has a lime sorbet bent, green apple sherbet too, a splash of gin n tonic perhaps – all of that sounds pretty delicious as a thing to consume. It’s fragrant, flavoursome and very refreshing. Extension of flavour is significant too. It just nails everything so well. Drink 2023 - 2040.

Moscato was gently pressed to a stainless steel tank where a special yeast was added that enhances aroma. The wine was then cold fermented at around 10-12 degrees Celsius until about 6.5% alcohol was produced. To stop fermentation, sulphur was added and the temperature was quickly lowered to 0 degrees Celsius.

Even if this is a rich rendition full of white stone fruit, quince paste with pomelo dusted in ginger powder and daikon radish, it has the Kevin John thumbprint. And while all that’s all well and lovely, it’s how this feels that makes it special: a density of fruit yet succulence, fleshy and full with umami lees, this is pulsing with flavour and energy and the oak gives off a savoury appearance. As always, compelling. Drink 2023 - 2035.

Glorious aromas of buckwheat, like cold soba noodles, melding with quince, roasted nuts, tangerine and apricot pith. Always an incredibly intense mid-weighted expression, this iteration is gentler and more refined in a sense, due to immaculate poise and drinkability quotient. I often find this wine a bit too much. Not this vintage. Maritime freshness and a waft of unresolved CO2 carry length. Compact and filigreed. Almost breezy, intuitive of feel and effortless, in the very best sense of the word. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

The Chardonnays I have tasted so far from the 2022 vintage in Margaret River remind me of the 2014s, in their soft acidity and primal, almost unbound fruit power. Here, the 2022 Kevin John Chardonnay leads with crushed nuts, salted yellow peach, red apple skins, preserved citrus rind, yuzu, green tea and saltbush, before tumbling into the flavors in the mouth. Toffee apple, nuts, curry leaf and saffron. Concentrated, piercing and intense. The acid envelops the tongue and holds it hostage, while the fruit explodes with power. The Gingin clone is on show here. The wine trails to a soft, juicy finish. It is lingering, very good, excellent, even better after a gentle decant and served in a big Burgundy glass. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023 - 2037.

“This wine is harvested in Kevin John’s 100th birth year. Harvested from 3 separate Wente clone chardonnay blocks, planted in 1976 and 1988, on their own roots,”
Gee, it’s a powerful and dry spicy wine. Lemon peel, cinnamon and clove spice, pear, fresh pineapple, apricot, and ripe lime, roasted peanuts. It’s flinty, zesty, kind of oaky too, but the fruit swallows it up, and carries on with aniseed, dried pear, lavish spice, tight grapefruity acidity, very intense, flinty and dry, chamomile and ginger on a finish of superb length. Chalky, spicy, oaky, a whole lot of Chardonnay power here, It’s bursting with vitality and it’s pretty full on as a young wine; like staring at the sun. But give it time, and it should reward most handsomely. Drink 2025 - 2032+

Ah Curly Flat chardonnay, you good thing. You tease with tangy fruit all citrusy and white nectarines all spiced up then the palate tantalises with scrumptious leesy flavours and sweet cedary oak. The final flirt is a line of fine, pure acidity holding everything neatly in place. Pretty classy seduction. Drink 2022 - 2033.

Curly Flat delivers the goods. There’s nothing wan about this release, it has body and it has flavour and it probably even has soul. Pristine peach, nectarine and citrus flavours are served hand-in-glove with cedarwood oak. There’s more than a little texture here, silken and grippy at once. There’s a smoked wheat character here too, perhaps even some crushed fennel, though in reality it presents as one seamless gorgeous lipsmacking whole. Super gear. Drink 2024 - 2030+

Nectarine, lime, nuts, a little cedar and spice. It’s glossy and gently viscous, with a saline and savoury flavour, bright and tight citrus acidity through creaminess, lime and grapefruit, an edge of tropical fruit too, some pith-like texture and grip, with an intense and juicy citrus finish of excellent length. Concentrated aromas, nougat and almond meal with peaches and apples, just enough of cloves and nutmeg spice. The palate is leaner than the rich nose but still full-flavoured, focused, with grapefruit juice and wet stones mineral aftertaste. It has an elegant and steady flow. A legendary Australian wine that showcases botrytic fruit, oodles of sweetness and a great capacity for ageing in the bottle. The best this country can do. Lightweight. Yet, of an uncanny intensity. Canned peach, grape spice, tangerine chutney, pineapple chunk, dried mango and citrus verbena. The finish is cloying. This needs age to embed savouriness and further complexity to mitigate it. Have faith. Drink by 2040.

2022 was a truly exceptional vintage in Margaret River with ideal conditions and slow ripening of Chardonnay producing pristine fruit. The Reserve Chardonnay is assembled from two central Wilyabrup vineyards, with additional fruit coming from an excellent mature vineyard in Wallcliffe and a small amount of fruit from Karridale. The fruit is handpicked and whole bunch pressed to new and seasoned oak for wild fermentation, followed by 9 months of maturation on lees before being blended for bottling.

    Other Reviews….
Sourced from the best grapes, hand-picked, whole bunch pressed, fermented in new and used French oak; only the best barrels are chosen for this wine. It is a beautiful Chardonnay, offering complexity and length to its white peach core. 96 Points James Halliday – The Weekend Australian Magazine 2023 An impressive chardonnay with notes of salted lemons, sliced pineapples, flint, sea shell, raw almonds and praline. The quality of the 2022 vintage meant that very little fruit got downgraded from the Reserve level. The quantity in this low-yielding vintage was healthy (1,000 dozen with new vineyard resources online). I maintain that this cuvée is released too early (November the year following harvest) to show its pedigree and potential, of which it is abundantly endowed. So, this 2022 Reserve Chardonnay leads with almond meal, toasted peach, apple skins and preserved citrus. There are hints of sandalwood, clove, cut fennel and star anise. The fruit in the mouth plumes around the skeleton of phenolics that shape the flavor through the finish. It is textural and complex, detailed and fleshy. This is very good! Will be better! The drinking window is conservative. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023 – 2037.

A regional blend including grapes from two central Wilyabrup vineyards, with additional fruit coming from Wallcliffe and a small amount of fruit from Karridale. Struck match, grilled lime and peach, almond meal, spicy oak. It’s a big mouthful of ripe citrus, pear and peach, aniseed, with toasted oak, something of an umami Parmesan rind flavour, quite juicy with some dry grip to texture, and a finish of good length. It’s a bold glass of Chardonnay, with plenty to hang on to, and I reckon it’s pretty good drinking over the medium term. Drink 2023 – 2028.
