Riesling vines were first planted as part of Henry Best’s ‘Nursery Block’ vineyard in the 1860s. Subsequent plantings followed in 1944 (since removed), 1978 and 1998. Always very flavoursome and very age worthy, the Best’s Great Western Rieslings are renown for their beautiful balance, texture and aromatics.

An Outstanding Great Western Riesling that boasts terrific drive, zest and concentration.

Brilliant water like core with greenish tinged edges. Intensely aromatic, the nose features lime, red apple and citrus scents which mix with whiffs of orange blossom, faint honeysuckle and slatey mineral notes. Boasting terrific drive, zest and concentration, mouth watering lime, citrus and green to red apple fruits are underscored by racy, slatey mineral infused acidity. Delicate mandarin and honeysuckle flavours also make an appearance. The finish is long, dry and zippy.

Grampians riesling at its very best. It defines varietal intensity but so too a fine and utterly delicious delicacy of touch. Aromatic, spicy, apple and lime scented with a lemon-lime essence quality, almost crystalline, that impresses and resonates deep. The palate brings an airy, powdery expression that runs deep and long and intense in lemon-lime citrus, grapefruit pith, apple and gingery spice married to a pure and lively acidity. Runs long, stays bright and will age and keep on going.

The 2025 Riesling comes from cuttings from the mother vines planted on the property (still producing, mind you) planted in 1866. It's an incredibly special site in Victoria, and they are—as an unnecessary aside—responsible for my absolute favorite Pinot Meunier, anywhere: the Old Vine Pinot Meunier. So here, the 2025 Riesling leads with lime and lilac, green apple, nashi pear and saline acidity. This is gorgeous. I love it. The acidity will preserve it for a long time to come. It drinks nicely now too, however. 11.5 % alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2026-2036.

It smells of pears and oyster shells; it tastes of nectarines, grapefruit, cedar-spice and mineral; it finishes with such an emphatic burst of fruit that its quality feels instantly upgraded. How or why this wine is only $26 I do not know. This release will need a bit of time in the bottle to eally blossom but the power, structure, length and indeed X-factor place it in rare air once again. Drink 2028-2035+.

A crisp, zingy dry white with zesty lime, green apple and pear fruits.

Jim Barry’s love affair with the Assyrtiko began in 2006 whilst on holiday on the Greek Island of Santorini, the birthplace of the variety. Its crisp acidity reminded him of Clare Valley Riesling yet it had a unique flavour profile that he had not experienced before. Intrigued, he began the process of importing cuttings and by 2012 had planted Australia’s first Assyrtiko vineyard.
Brilliant water like core with a greenish tinged outskirts. Jumping out of the glass at the nose are intense pear, red apple and lime scents followed by some fresh herb and subtle stony mineral notes. Zesty lime, green apple and pear fruits race across the mouth watering palate with infusions of fresh herbs, wet stone and minerals the undercard. Crisp acidity with a minerally zing to the long scrumptious finish.

A shag on a rock for a variety and producer in Australia, but jeez, the incremental excellence year-on-year suggests no resting on laurels. It's a brilliant, textural white wine here, flamboyant with jasmine florals, lime, sea spray, faint cashew nut savouriness, pink grapefruit, a thread of aniseed and dashes of salt bush. Gently chalky texture, good extension of flavour, refreshing, too. Very good. Drink by 2029.

The 2025 Assyrtiko is saline, chalky, pithy and fresh. The color is water white in the glass, and despite being a pure, sleek thing, it has lovely chalky phenolic texture that shapes the finish. I really like this wine—almost everyone does—and I think that it looks particularly good in this 2025 vintage. This is excellent. 12% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2026-2035.

Pikes have long produced one of Clare Valley’s benchmark Rieslings, 2025 marking the 41st release, one which was marked by frost and drought, yielding smaller crops but fruit with incredible purity. Fruit is sourced predominately from the Estate’s Polish Hill River vineyard with the balance coming from growers located in the Watervale, Sevenhill, Leasingham and Mintaro districts. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel on lees for 3 months.
Brilliant water like core with green tinted edges. Aromas of lime and citrus leap out of the glass followed by some green apple, orange rind, talc and chalky mineral notes. Concentrated lime, citrus and green apple fruits drive the zesty palate with subtle orange rind, chalky talc and steely mineral elements extending across the back half. The test of a good vineyard is often how well it performs in challenging years, and 2025 was certainly a challenging one. Yet the wine has emerged as something of a triumph. It’s a Clare Valley wine and produced with 100% free-run juice, then kept on lees for about three months, introducing a level of texture to the keenly edged palate. The perfumed mix of lemons and lime is evident immediately, and then the palate displays that subtle tension through the acid and a fine minerality that extends through to the finish. It never fails to disappoint, and it’s another excellent example of what Pikes can do. Drink 2025-2035.

One of Australia’s most reliable wines, always good value and always brilliant quality. This is the 41st release of this Clare Valley stalwart. It should be well represented in every serious cellar. The fruit comes from their own estate in the Polish Hill River sub-region and various growers across the Clare. 100% free run juice, which sees three months on lees. Always delicious young, it can be relied on to age and improve for many, many years. The 2025 vintage may be a small one, but it is proving to be of exceptional quality. Lemon/lime in colour, the nose offers a range of aromas including white jasmine, limes, spices, river stones and hints of grapefruit. Medium to good length, this is clean, fresh and well balanced. Expect it to provide fifteen to twenty years of pleasure, if you prefer your Riesling mature. Drink 2025-2045.

Sourced from a small selection of some of Tyrrell’s top Semillon vineyards around the Hunter Valley, most of which are dry grown and have an average vine age of 40 years. The 2022 vintage, in many ways, was a mirror of 2021. With above average rainfall in the winter months, the vines were set up perfectly for the growing season. Cooler temperatures over the summer period meant that there was no rush to begin harvest and we began about a seven to ten days later than normal. All of the fruit was in remarkable condition with intense fruit flavours coupled with high natural acidity. The grapes were machine picked in the cool of the night before gentle pressing and fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine then spent a short amount of time on yeast lees to gain extra complexity and mouth feel.

Even though the majority of this wine was matured in neutral oak, with only a small proportion in new 'Vicard' French oak barriques, the end result is a rich, full bodied style of Chardonnay that will only fill out further with time. Winemaker Ben Riggs has added back an additional 10% of tank fermented juice to provide freshness and vibrancy to the final wine.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a glimmer of green to the edges and a watery hue. Aromas of ripe peaches, crème brulee and light butterscotch fill the nostrils with some bacon fat and spicy nougat also evident. Mid weighted, rich peach and crème brulee flavours have a creamy textural feel. Also chiming in are subtle butterscotch, toasty oak and spicy nougat elements. Excellent intensity finishing with a nicely balanced freshness and long aftertaste.

Hen & Chicken' is a disorder that's been linked to mineral deficiency. In wine-growing parlance, a chicken is a small, stunted berry, while a hen is a normal berry, one that will grow to luscious maturity and provide a burst of full-flavoured juice when it's squeezed. Evidently, winemaker Larry Cherubino, has spent some time on the sorting table for this wine! Aged in a combination of new and two year old French oak for a period of 6 month.

Lifted white peach and nectarine scents are intermeshed with dried honey and hints of cinnamon which are trailed by lightly roasted almond and spice notes. Mouthfilling flavours of ripe nectarine and pear shaded by a touch of grapefruit overlay cinnamon, subtlety honeyed almond like characters and spice. Excellent concentration and drive. Rich, creamy like textural feel finishing fresh with a long highly delectable aftertaste.
