    Bottle
    $275.88 Dozen
    Cellar: Drink now - 6 Years (2019-2025)

Riesling vines were first planted as part of Henry Best’s ‘Nursery Block’ vineyard in the 1860s. Subsequent plantings followed in 1944 and 1978. Always very flavoursome and very age worthy, the Best’s Great Western Rieslings are renown for their beautiful balance, texture and aromatics.

Brilliant water like colour with greenish tinged edges. Pronounced aromas of fresh limes intermix with red apple and hints of honeysuckle followed by some orange blossom and subtle slatey mineral notes. Mouth watering lime, red apple and citrus flavours have a generous feel with subtle infusions of honeysuckle, orange blossom and flinty minerals underpinning the fruit. Finishes dry and fresh with snappy acidity and a long aftertaste.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

    Other Reviews....
The riesling vines used to produce this wine come from cuttings off the original 1866 planting of Best’s. Cool, huh? Always a zingy number and distinctly Aussie riesling in that zingy, tart, acid driven way, here’s another cracker.
Lime juice and zest, steely mineral notes, fragrant and frisky to taste, all mouth-watering and refreshing and generally just delicious. Quite a bit of concentration here but the freshness is ludicrous and challenges any perceived weight here. A touch of sweetness? Maybe. A delight. Drink 2019 - 2030+

Whole-bunch pressed to stainless steel for cold fermentation, stopped with 7g/l residual sugar. Gold medal Melbourne Wine Awards ’19, top gold Victorian Wine Show ’19. It has the intense lime zest and pith flavours I find irresistible. Bright acidity glides alongside the fruit. Drink to 2035.

Vines planted '78 and '98, harvested by the sophisticated Opti grape sorter-destemmer, 4 hours in the Opti before pressing, thence to a 7yo foudre for fermentation, and maturation on lees. You'd better pay attention as you take your first sip - this is not your grandma's riesling. Unsweetened lime sorbet. Drink by 2030.

The Alpine Valleys region boasts a proud Italian community, many of them second or third generation who have followed their parents into crop growing. Tobacco used to be a significant industry here but as it declined, many took to growing grapes and as a result the area has a wide array of Italian grape varieties. The fruit for this Vermintino comes from the Ferraro Vineyard at Myrtleford. Growing this sun loving variety in a cool climate means that the fruit can be picked a little riper while still retaining good acidity.  This results in a richer, more textural style.
Brilliant water like colour with a faint tinge of green around the outskirts. Elevated tropical fruit, lime and green apple scents infused with fresh herbs are followed by some stony mineral notes. Textural and intensely flavoured the mouth watering palate is laden with juicy pear, lime and green apple fruits which overlay a stony mineral back drop. Dry crisp finish with some spicy fresh herb infusions sneaking their way onto the long delicious aftertaste.

Rivar Ferguson-Mayer at the helm with fruit coming from the Yarra floor. Curious harvest season with a niggling rain period making things stop start a bit. Anyways, this is pleasing gear.
Perfume kicks off with oatmeal and marzipan scents, some green apple, ripe lime and green pear too. Sloshy, pear and apple juice to taste, licks of nougat, cinnamon spice, some brioche and a fresh, limey finish. Lots of good energy here, plus interest and general sense of quality, whatever that might mean. It’s a very good wine. Drink 2021 - 2030.

From vineyards across the Eden Valley, night-harvested, destemmed, chilled, pressed to tank for fermentation at 15 degrees C. Pale straw-green; the aromatic bouquet picks up citrus blossom on the first whiff, the palate seamlessly running with lime/lemon flavours along silvery lines of acidity. A very good example of a very good vintage. Drink by 2027.

Comes from Bream Creek's 44yo riesling vines, believed to be the oldest in Tasmania. It is already flaunting its wares with titratable acidity of 8.2g/l and residual sugar of 7.3g/l. It simply ratchets up the power of all in the inputs, and will give pleasure when very young or very old - and any point along the way. Drink by 2038.

Bream Creek has been around since the 1970s and the Reserve Old Vine Riesling is made from the first plantings in 1974.
Older vines should bring intensity and focus and that is exactly what is happening here. The green apple is a focused Bramley apple, lemon zest, sherbet, grapefruit curd, lemon blossom and fresh limes all are precise and intense. There is a hint of maturity in the kerosene and a silky richness to the vanilla notes but ultimately this is still so youthful with many years to come.  Quintessentially Tasmanian, this is a wine with a glorious sense of place and sense of self, delightful. Drink 2021-2031.
