Wonderfully intense and mouth watering with plentiful textural volume counterpointed by shimmering acidity.
Kanta Riesling by Egon Müller is a unique winemaking partnership where German tradition and precision meets the premium, cool climate fruit from the Adelaide Hills. Fruit is sourced from the Argyle Vineyard, a high altitude Adelaide Hills site that sits over 400m above sea level and is flecked with traces of iron stone. Rejuvenated in 1999, the original plantings date back to the 1840’s making them some of the oldest vines in South Australia.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with green tinted edges and a watery hue. Nosing offers up aromas of red apple skin, lime and honeysuckle with some orange blossom and flinty mineral notes also evident. Wonderfully intense the palate features mouth watering lime, red apple, pear and citrus fruits which carry plentiful textural volume. Shimmering acidity with orange and flinty mineral elements the undercard. Superb drive finishing long, dry and scrumptious.

'Flotilla' is matured next to the sea in hand-selected first-fill ex-bourbon barrels. The profile promises vanilla sweetness with hints of zesty lemon and green apples, rounded off with a distinct maritime note, typical of Pulteney. 46% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Totally ex-American oak. I found it so good and so balanced, after some previous versions more on sawdust and vanillin, that I placed it among my 'best of show' during the 'masterclass' we did with Dave B. at Whisky Live Paris this year. We always have a good laugh when doing these things with Mr. Broom. Colour: pale white wine. Top. Nose: we are really by the sea, it's not just some vague advertising pitch thrown on labels by marketeers from Wick or London. Sea spray and seaweed thus blend with a very subtle vanilla, which combines perfectly with wet chalk, baker's yeast, unleavened bread, and white beer brewed in town by the last local hipsters. A few notes of smoked fish, followed by some vanilla fudge. Mouth: very fragrant, powerful, smoky, spicy, salty, citrusy... I think that if we start to find more of such Pulteney, we can soon organise a large comparative session between them and Clynelish. It's good to have goals in life. I also really like these notes of dill, watercress, and sorrel in the background, on top of the lemon. Finish: rather long, still slightly fatty but otherwise perfectly centred on oysters and lemon. Some fresh spices in the aftertaste, as well as a few little Easter eggs in sugar. Not very sure about our timing here, ha. Comments: not much to add. Slippery textured and concentrated with a long, dry, refreshing finish.
Described as a more complex and structured style of Rose by the winery, the Rock Angel is produced from grapes primarily sourced from the vineyards of Chateau d’Esclans in addition to selected vineyards in the vicinity of the Esclans Valley and nearby in the Cotes de Provence region.
Salmon pink in colour. Peach, strawberry and blood orange aromas mix with wet slate notes. Slippery textured and concentrated, the palate is layered with fleshy peach and strawberry fruits. Some blood orange and wet stone elements linger underneath. Brisk acidity with a long, dry, refreshing finish that carries gorgeous shape.

Langhorne Creek Shiraz – the very mention screams flavour and value and we have both here. Coming from such a good vintage helps, of course. An inky dark maroon, we have rich and ripe chocolate notes as part of a wonderful plushness. Blackberries, mocha, bay leaves, licorice and a hint of blueberries lurking in the background, with a burly earthiness. Serious length here and sleek tannins. This has a ten to fifteen year future. There's 30% whole bunches in the mix here and it comes across as a more complex, textural wine than the 'house' pinot noir. Some darker cherry in the mix, wild strawberry and raspberry coulis, too, with an understory of spice, amaro herbs, dried citrus rind, gamey tones and a dose of earthiness. It's got a lovely minerally palate presence, tannins powdery and compact, the tail long, slender and lingering with spice, stone and red fruits. Drink by 2036.

Midnight black core with a dark red black tinged hue. Soaring out of the glass are aromas of liquorice and blackberry which are complimented by blackpepper, scorched earth, dried meat, fennel and spicy vanillin cedar notes. Medium to full in body, the palate is flush with succulent blackberry, liquorice, dark plum and black cherry fruits. Spicy vanillin cedar, dried meat, earthy fennel and pepper elements line the back half. Expansive and powerful in it’s breadth, polished yet sturdy tannins provide the framework. Concludes long, juicy and peppery, showing a real sense of refinement.

Sourced off old vines planted almost 70 years ago on red-veined, iron-rich quartz soils. If the winemaker's intent is to deliver something expressive of place, he succeeds, but '23 brings an added level of sophistication. It is one beautifully nuanced young shiraz with a big future. All class in blackberry and cassis, florals and baking spices, stone and mineral, earth and gentle pepper. It is early days but deceptively firm tannins are in place; have confidence in them for long-term ageing. Utterly compelling. Drink by 2035.

Matured for 18 months in French oak barriques of which 40% were new. Very deep black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Heady black raspberry, liquorice, black cherry and blood plum scents engulf the nostrils. Also evident are vanillin spice, provincial herb and subtle scorched earth notes. Rich, voluptuous black raspberry, liquorice and blood plum fruits saturate flamboyant, weighty palate with some ripe black cherry, vanillin earth and spicy fennel elements sitting in the background. My good mate used to live in the house next to the Slade vineyard. I've wandered these vines quite a few times with a Cooper's Pale in my hand; the vines are epic, gnarly old beasts, some of the best. Pure satsuma plum fruits daubed with souk-like spice along with hints of gingerbread, pomegranate, cola, char siu, biltong, dried citrus rind, some amaro herbs and an expression of blood orange. It's no airy, fragrant style. There's resonance and power here, abundant spice, bright acidity and a solid core of plum and ginger that rolls along nicely. Drink by 2040.

Supple and moreish entry finishing long, fresh and juicy.
Yabby Lake’s second label, Red Claw, regularly delivers great value across the range. The 2024 season brough 'La Nina' weather conditions for the third year in a row. It was a fine and early ripening vintage with low yields and superb quality. Produced with the inclusion of 10% whole bunch fruit the wine was matured in French oak puncheons for 10 months.
Red to dark red colour with black shaded edges and a light red hue. Fragrant dark cherry, violet, strawberry and anise aromas stream out of the glass with whiffs of forest floor and spicy cedar also evident. Making a supple entrance are moreish flavours of dark cherry, strawberry and anise which meld into a forest floor, fresh herb and spicy cedar back drop. Polished tannins with a long fresh yet juicy finish.

Produced by a husband and wife team whose wines have previously featured under our Nicks Secret guise, this Grenache boasts superb concentration and structure yet is both juicy and fresh. Sourced from a single vineyard located in the Greenock sub district, it comes from vines planted in 1953.
A deliciously bright and succulent yet structured Grenache with bling galore.
Dark red core with black toned edges and a bright red hue. Alluring dark raspberry, red liquorice and cherry scents set sail from the glass with ample intensity complimented by some fresh wild herb, earthy graphite and pepper notes. Juicy red to dark raspberry, red liquorice and cherry fruits are deliciously rendered across the palate. Fabulous intensity with traces of blueberry, dried herbs, scorched earth and peppered meats the undercard. Fresh acidity and mildly chalky tannins provide structure. Concludes long, bright and succulent.

This Vine Vale-sourced grenache recently nabbed the 'Best Grenache' and 'Best Single-Vineyard Wine' at the Barossa Wine Show. It's pretty easy to see why. It has a lovely composition, all savoury red and dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of raspberry coulis, gingerbread, cola, earth, violets, souk-like spice, dried hay and purple floral tones. There is an airy sense of detail to the wine's component parts; easy to parse and easier to drink with a bright line of acidity propelling the wine forwards to a finish that shows grace and a spiced, red berry, creamy textural flourish on the finish. Drink by 2031.

We now talk of a ‘modern’ style of grenache, so as to redefine and separate the grape from its old self. This old vine grenache falls into that new category neatly. The modern style essentially brings the fruit forward and pushes back on the oak. Here, the fruit off old vines is allowed to sing: cherry, roasted plum, pepper, cherry nougat, raspberry bon bon and liquorice aromas. The grape’s natural confection notes are given a voice – just a little – working with red berried and dark fruits while a lively, persistent spiciness ensues. This spice-fuelled red wine just goes and goes led by juniper, clove, rosemary and red liquorice, running long through to the finish with a touch of savouriness for added interest. Drink 2023-2036.

There is so much to love in this Grenache. It has boundless energy and life in it, as witnessed by the array of fruits and savoury characters on display: strawberry (ripe like ice cream topping), raspberry, boysenberry, red cherry, liquorice and violets. The palate is silky and juicy, with chewy tannins and a dusty mouthfeel. While it’s great by itself, it comes alive even more with food; I had it with steak and it cut right through the fat and protein. A beautiful wine that will keep developing for a long time.

A vibrant and youthful purple in the glass. Really pretty and lifted aromas of dried flowers, blueberry, red cherry, graphite, anise and sweet spice. The palate has absolute drinkability and charm. Chock full of fleshy blue fruits, creamy oak, sweet spice and bramble. Textured tannins and lively acidity deliver shape and cut. Delicious!

Some toasted marshmallow, toasted egg bagel, and powdered doughnut sweeten the deal even further. The palate has more spice, with cinnamon babka and fresh ginger, plus decadent dark chocolate from flourless chocolate cake and chocolate-covered espresso beans. ...We are really behind schedule; the last CS we tasted was the batch 7 from 2018, which had rather disappointed us (WF 74). One thing may explain the other... Now batch 5, for example, had been lovely (WF 86). Colour: gold. Nose: spicy earth, loads of chocolate, fruit peel, leaves, ale, clove, bitters, damp wood and just autumn leaves after a week's rain. Old stump and mushrooms. With water: gets even drier, earthier, with a rawer mineral side. Really a walk in the woods. Also cinnamon tobacco. Mouth (neat): bitter oranges and ale, plus a lot of maraschino and chocolate, Jaffa cakes, pipe tobacco... Looks like it's back! With water: sweeter, but with a spicy edge that we enjoy. Earthy deep-dried orange zests, old raisins, bay leaves, bitter chocolate… Finish: long, with some menthol coming through and more tea tannins in the aftertaste. Marmalade as the signature. Comments: rather a rough stone, but there's a lot happening. Looks like the bitterer batch 7 was an accident. 85 points - whiskyfun.com

Other reviews... An unusual vintage bottling of Old Pulteney, in that maturation occurred in a mix of American bourbon casks and Spanish sherry casks that previously held heavily-peated whisky. The nose opens with a whiff of ozone; then lemon, vanilla, and coconut appear, along with fleeting wood smoke. Intense tropical fruitiness merges with milk chocolate, lemon sorbet, and lively spices on the palate. ‘The Sommet Shiraz block is a small 0.6ha block, consisting of 35 rows, and 5000 vines. This close planted block was configured with 1.6m row spacings and 0.75m between each vine. This block was planted at the most elevated point of our vineyard, on a steep south/west facing slope below the ridgeline of the Mount Camel range, on deep Cambrian era decomposed greenstone rock formed over 500 million years. Fermented in small open fermenters with 10% fermented as whole bunches. 18 days on skins. Pressed to 1-2 year old 600L demi-muids and barriques. The wine remained in barrel for 8 months prior to bottling.’
This wine is a powerhouse and a superb combination of excellent fruit and expert winemaking. Sons of Eden is a partnership between winemaker Corey Ryan and viticulturist Simon Cowham who both learnt their trades in the vineyards and cellars of Eden Valley. Their labels Romulus and Remus come from the fable of the legendary founders of Ancient Rome. These twins were abandoned at birth and reared by a she-wolf. Romulus murdered his twin Remus in a fit of rage over the naming of Rome, the city which both had built. Legend presents Romulus (Barossa Valley) as the stronger, more powerful of the brothers, while Remus (Eden Valley) was more refined, focused and elegant.
Fruit was sourced from the Nuriootpa, Light Pass and Moppa sub regions of the Barossa Valley with vines aged 80 plus years old. Maturation took place in French oak hogsheads of which 45% were new for a period of 18 months.
Dense, concentrated and velvety, this is top line Barossa Shiraz at its seductive best.
Magnificent inky black core with a very deep dark red black hue. Wafting from the glass with great potency are seductive aromas of dark plum, blackberry and liquorice which marry into some vanillin oak, mocha, subtle earthy fennel and spice notes. Valerie Chaume started Chaume-Arnaud when she was just 23 years old, renting 4.5 hectares of vineyards from her family. With her husband Philippe joining her in 1989, they expanded the cellar. Situated in the northern part of Cotes du Rhone villages, Vinsobres is one of the most northerly Crus in the Southern Rhone and sits at a high altitude of 400 to 450 meters, higher even than the highest vineyard in Gigondas.
The 2020 Vinsobres is made up of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Cinsault, and 10% Mourvèdre. The fruit is mainly sourced from the high plateau and south-facing stony, limestone clay soil. Hand-picked fruit is de-stemmed, crushed, and fermented using only natural yeasts, with gentle elevage for three weeks after which it is matured in concrete tanks.
Deep dark red black colour with a dark red hue. Black raspberry and liquorice aromas rise from the glass followed by some black cherry, scorched earth, herbs du Provence and peppered meat notes. Rich black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits engulf the mouth with infusions of herbs du Provence, scorched earth and pepper on the underside. Sullivans Cove American Oak is a series of single malt whiskies drawn exclusively from American oak ex-Bourbon barrels. Each cask is aged in Tasmania’s unique climate for a minimum of 10 years, with many exceeding this. Bottled unblended and one cask at a time, each release reflects the distinct influence of its specific barrel. While the ABV varies from cask to cask—typically falling between 47% and 50%—all expressions are non-chill filtered and free from added colour. As one of the foundational expressions in the Sullivans Cove core range, the American Oak Single Cask highlights the purity of distillation and the consistency of house character when matured in a controlled, familiar cask type, offering notes of vanilla, stone fruit and soft oak spice.

Juicy black fruits with a slightly chewy feel.
A blend of predominately Garnacha and Cariñena with 20% of the wine aged in used barrels, 14% French and 6% Eastern European oak, for a period of 6 months. Dark red core with black tinged edges and a dark red hue. Lifted morello and black cherry scents intermix with liquorice, dried herbs and spicy earth. Juicy morello and black cherry fruits are intertwined with black raspberry, liquorice, scorched earth, vanillin spice and dried herb elements. Slightly chewy tannins with a ripe, deeply fruited finish.

A very bunchy and spicy Pinot that has a bitey feel.
Dark red in colour with black toned edges and a light red hue. Emitting a strong whole bunch influence, spicy dried clove aromas are to the fore with some dark cherry, rhubarb, smoked meat and peppered earth notes also evident. Savoury red to dark cherry, rhubarb and strawberry flavours meld into a dried clove, spicy capsicum and earth back drop. Fine grained tannins and lively acidity with a very spicy finish that has a bitey feel to it.

A blend of estate fruit planted in 1976, 1997 and 2004. 25% whole bunches and 20% new oak. A pleasing crimson red. The whole bunches announce themselves the moment you pick up the glass. Aromas of tea rose and bramble together with some spiced cherries and raspberries lead onto the moreish and flavourful palate. This also has the structure to see this become softer and more complex over the next 3–4 years.

Rich, fleshy black fruits with ripe chewy tannins imparting some mild grip onto the long juicy finish.
Deep very dark red core with black shaded edges and a dark red hue. Greeting the nostrils is a mix of black and morello cherry aromas which are followed by some liquorice, dried Mediterranean herbs, earthy incense like notes and cinnamon. Rich, fleshy black and morello cherry fruits along with some black plum and liquorice overlay an earthy incense infused back drop of dried herbs and spicy cinnamon. Ripe chewy tannins impart some mild grip onto the long juicy finish.

Brilliant pale straw colour with green tinged edges and a watery hue. Elevated pear and red apple aromas make their way out of the glass with hints of honeydew, quince and spice also chiming in. Delicious pear and red apple fruits are delivered with terrific intensity, carrying with them a voluminous and well rounded feel. Notions of quince, wet stone and delicate spice sit in the background. Refreshing acidity with a long moreish finish.

Rich, youthfully bright and juicy with a slightly inky feel to the long, concentrated finish.
Incredible colour density featuring an impenetrable inky black heart along with an equally deep dark purple black hue. Freshly crushed blackberry, liquorice, dark plum and blueberry scents are delivered with ample intensity. Notes of vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered earth ensue. Rich, youthfully bright and juicy, the concentrated palate is laden with blackberry, liquorice and fresh ripe blueberry fruits. Fennel, vanillin cedar and delicate peppered earth elements engage the back half. Fresh, energetic and succulent, it has a sturdy yet polished tannin structure which provides some underlying muscle. Finishes long and vividly fruited yet slightly inky in its feel.

From '75 and '98 plantings on the Springs Hill vineyard. The '24 Paralian suite, for me, is the finest to date. All killer, as they say … The quiet power in this is something to behold – a wine of gravitas and grace. It comes in a little darker of fruit this year, though not heavy with it. Dried olive, black cherry, violet, blueberry, ground coffee, a certain sultry floral and spicy feel, with an undercurrent of nori and iodine. This is a marvellous expression, with finely tooled tannins and exceptional length. Simply brilliant. Drink by 2038.
