A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo sourced from Langhorne Creek and the Adelaide Hills. Dense midnight black colour with a dark purple hue. Intense black cherry, blackcurrant and liquorice scents fill the nostrils followed by vanillin cedar, earth and spice. Rich black cherry and blackcurrant fruits drive the palate. A juicy feel is counterpointed by ripe chewy tannins which provide good structure. Spicy vanillin cedar and earth characters lie underneath. Long fleshy dark fruited finish.

Woodford Reserve Master's Collection Five-Malt Stouted Mash Kentucky Malt Whiskey (700ml)
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $240. 00
    Bottle
    $2880.00 Dozen
    ABV: 45.2%

Released in late 2021 in the USA as the Winter 2021 Master’s Collection edition, Woodford Reserve Five-Malt Stouted Mash is made using distillers malt, wheat malt, pale chocolate malt, Carafa 1 malt and kiln coffee malt. For Master Distiller Chris Morris and Assistant Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall, the whiskey is a take on crafting a spirit that references the traditional heavy-style dark beer (although it's not 100% clear what makes it 'stouted'). “It's an expression unlike any other we’ve released before,” Morris said. “The rich, roasted malty stout flavors mingle with bright touches of baked fruit, crisp spices, and orange zest for a unique Woodford Reserve experience.” This year’s Master's Collection expression marks the 17th release in the series and is available in limited volumes across select global markets. 45.2% Alc./Vol

Other reviews... "This whiskey is true to its intention on the nose, with spicy, roasty notes of Mexican hot chocolate, and cocoa-dusted truffles. The palate is zingy, with orange zest, lemon, and menthol cutting through the richness of gooey fudge and maple syrup-drenched pancakes. The finish turns drier, with coffee grounds, leather, musty cellar, tart berries, and malted milk balls." 85 points - distiller.com

Notes from the producers... Color: Antique Orange. Aroma: Dusky notes of roasted malt, toasted nuts all sweetened with hints of milk chocolate and brightened with a touch of orange zest, spearmint, and warm baking spices. Oak, cherry cobbler, and shortbread round out the malt and barrel influence. Taste: Malty with toasted hazelnut and cocoa highlights atop a layer of baked fruit, crisp spice, and zest bounce about the depths. Finish: Malt and cocoa notes linger on.

Alto del Carmen 40 Reservado Transparente Pisco (750ml)
    CHILE
    $74. 99
    Bottle
    $899.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Alto del Carmen is produced just outside of Vicuna in the beautiful Elqui Valley. This example is made from hand harvested muscat grapes, distilled in copper pot stills and classified by Chile as a "reservado". A three time cold-filtering creates a clear spirit - hence the title 'Transparente', as opposed to its gold coloured sibling. Expect an easy-drinking, lightly fruity Pisco that's endlessly mixable. 40% Alc./Vol.

    ITALY
    $99. 99

    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Not only is Romana the world's best selling export brand Sambuca, it was also one of the first to be effectively marketed. Made by the Pallini family, liqueurists since 1875, Romana Sambuca has long been the bartenders preference over competitors. They tell us it’s a fuller flavoured drink, with plenty of sweet anise aromas - thick, sweet and viscous. Experiment with these mixers for starters to find out why:

White Cloud – One fluid ounce of Romana in tall glass, fill with ice and soda. Refreshing!
Mosca – Float three coffee beans into one ounce of Romana in a thin liqueur glass.
Briefly flame before drinking. Intriguing but risky.
Romana Caffe – Add one half fluid ounce of Romana Sambuca to a cup of hot black Espresso or regular coffee. Stir. Lady's favourite.

    Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS
    $89. 99

    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Another variant in Bols Corenwyn line up is this six year old, now with updated packaging and in a 700ml format. (Previously we shipped the one litre equivalents). Corenwyn is an alternative spelling of the generic 'kirenwijn', a high-malt Genever specialty. The style, 'corenwyn' translates as 'grain wine', referring to the high proportion of malt wine (at least 51%) used in the blend. Only Bols is permitted to use Corenwyn as a brand name because it was Lucas Bols himself who first created the drink back in 1575. The term was reserved for the very finest distillations of grain. The 6 year old was launched in 2009 as a limited edition but has continued due to popular demand. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Only the maturation of this variant of Bols Corenwyn takes place in two types of oak casks; both French Limousin and American oak...Appearance: (bottle No. 035099) Clear, buttery yellow with a hint of green. Aroma: Sweet herbal nose with vanilla, tree bark, ground coriander and thyme. Taste: Silky, slight oily mouth feel, yet dry, spicy and herbal with juniper and light woodiness. Aftertaste: Angelica, ground coriander and nutty balsawood finish with lingering pine flavours. Outstanding. 5+ Stars. - diffordsguide.com

This has perfumed aromas of currants, bay leaves, peppercorns, dried herbs, wild blackberries and licorice. Gorgeously creamy texture and fine tannins, with tangy acidity and a medium body. Bright and complex. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

The 2019 Koomilya GT Shiraz is sourced from a vineyard site that Steve has been working with since his Hardy's days, and he’s liked it since that time. Planted on silty loam, the thrust here is to make Shiraz simply, that of place. This is supple and powerful, with the tannins spread through the mouth, like rivers through the fruit. Great wine is about great grapes. These Koomilya Shiraz wines (GT, DC and JC) are all made the same in order to preface and promote the variation and diversity of the sites: handpicked, 20% whole bunches in the wild ferments, low sulfur. Really excellent—delicious. This has concentrated fruit and id is spicy and vibrant, as so many 2020s seem to be. There is life here. Drink 2022 - 2037.

The old property is serviced with bio-char and layers in a lot of regenerative agriculture that aims to reintroduce lots of native species into the farm. The GT block is 31 year old vines grafted from gewurztraminer to shiraz, ‘GT stands for grafted or gewurztraminer’, says Steve Pannell in his press release, but I go to famed mid-to-late 90s DJ and music producer, GrooveTerminator, when I see the initials. Almost a third is whole bunch fermented here, and 20% new oak used. Also, this is beautiful drinking right now.
There’s a freshness and lift to the wine despite the concentration and layering of dark fruit, woody spice and general inkiness. The character of gewurz seems omnipresent despite no gewurz here – it’s floral and pretty shiraz, flirty and quite notably silky, more soft in the shiraz spectrum and red fruited inflections chime in with plum and dark, forest berry fruits. A lick of cola and char here but the wine floats and swishes on velvety tannins and finishes extremely long and fine. Drink 2022 - 2030+

The 2019 Koomilya DC Block Shiraz is sourced from a vineyard planted on yellow clay, and the effect on the wine is profound. This is darker and more supple than the GT tasted before it; there's a creamy base that differentiates this wine from the GT, and it is pure and powerful. Coolness 101. Exciting. These Koomilya Block wines (GT, DC and JC) are all made the same way in order to preface and promote the variation and diversity of the sites: handpicked, 20% whole bunches in the wild ferments, low sulfur. Erin Larkin - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (September 2022)

A very unique site tucked away between thatches of native forest and fringed by other old vine properties. The DC Block vines are 47 years old. There’s 20% new oak employed here. A formidable and important project from Steve Pannell. The 2019 shiraz of McLaren Vale have a bit more dry reddiness as a thing, and there’s some of that here, but the tannin and potency surpasses that.
It’s highly perfumed, so rich and ripe, inky plummy fruit characters, brined black olive and a strong overlay of cedar, mahogany and clove. The palate is similarly generous and rich, plush and impenetrable, tightens on train tracks of cedary, firm and long ribbons of tannin and overall it feels succulent despite the heft and concentration. Formidable wine here, a quibble on how oak interplays in dryness with dryer spectrum fruit characters, but there’s a hugely impressive wine in the glass regardless. Drink 2022 - 2035+

Enough wood to notice surrounds the equally ripe aromas of mocha, black raspberry and spicy poached plum. The super-sleek, dense and wonderfully energetic medium-bodied flavors brim with both minerality and dry extract that helps to buffer the firm tannins shaping the youthfully austere, chiseled and sneaky long finish. Drink from 2032+.

If the Cuvée Carnot tends to take center stage chez Bouchard, it's the 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds that's the Volnay to beat to my palate this year. Exhibiting aromas of cherries, raspberries, loamy soil, black truffle and raw cocoa, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and elegantly muscular, with terrific depth and mid-palate amplitude, concluding with a long, mineral finish.

The 2020 Volnay Taillepieds 1er Cru has a lovely spicy bouquet with clove and white pepper scents infusing the dark berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe tannins, taut and crisp, quite spicy and grippy towards the finish. Good potential. Drink 2025-2045.

Another black colour with purple rim. The bouquet wants to offer some elegance despite the massive concentration of the vintage. Succulent dark raspberry, a glossy character also on the palate, firmer tannins behind for sure. Medium plus length and the useful acidity which picks out points of red fruit.

Very ripe liqueur-like aromas of various black berries are nuanced by plenty of spice and floral elements. There is excellent underlying tension to the beautifully textured medium weight flavors that also brim with sappy dry extract and minerality, all wrapped in a bitter pit fruit finale that offers impressive persistence. This is definitely atypical but the intrinsic class of a fine Caillerets is still present. Drink from 2032+.

Cropped at a derisory 15 hectoliters per hectare, the quality of Bouchard's 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot is some compensation for the lack of quantity. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of dark berries, rose petals, plums, raw cocoa and orange rind, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, with powdery tannins, lively acids and a long, fragrant finish.

The 2020 Volnay Les Caillerets "Ancienne Cuvée Carnot" 1er Cru has a lively dark cherry, cranberry and mint-scented bouquet with light figgy aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, a little chewiness on the entry but there is fine acidity and a cohesive peppery finish. It seems to firm up in the glass, implying it will require some bottle age. Drink 2026-2040.

Upfront floral and licorice aromas, but it needs some aeration for the red berries to emerge. A rich and fleshy wine for this appellation that’s associated with silky elegance. Crisp tannins and lively acidity keep this bright. Needs some time to settle down and open up. From a 3.76-hectare plot in this well known 1er Cru. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.

Absolutely black centre to this with a massively concentrated bouquet, thus far hiding the detail. Inky depths. I would like to see this again after racking. The wine is not destabilised on the palate and the concentration is certainly exceptional, fresher at the finish. There is certainly an awful lot of wine here: buy it if you want a wine for 25 years time!

Moderately generous wood and menthol fight somewhat with the exuberantly spicy black cherry liqueur-like aromas that are cut with lovely floral wisps. There is excellent concentration to the bigger-bodied and more powerful flavors that are blessed with ample amounts of sappy dry extract that does a fine job of buffering the firm tannic spine shaping the complex, balanced and hugely long finale. Opening in the glass with a rich bouquet of wild berries, cassis, orange rind, rich spices, loamy soil, black truffles and toasty new oak, the 2020 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is full-bodied, ample and seamless, with a rich, enveloping core of fruit, ripe tannins and lively acids. The 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru comes from purchased grapes that Bouchard harvest themselves. It has a fresh black cherry and boysenberry jam scented bouquet, just a touch of warm alcohol here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite dense and lightly spiced. It feels quite muscular towards the finish where I would like to see more light amongst the shade. A bit dense and brawny. Drink 2026-2045.

Deep, dark and smoky nose that's still quite closed. Gigantic structure and fantastic cherry fruit on the rich and deeply harmonious palate. Still very youthful, but this gives you the full Gevrey Grand Cru experience, with all the earthy power, spicy complexity and a touch of bitter chocolate. Expansive and creamy finish with very impressive, plush tannins. This was made from bought-in grapes from an almost 1-hectare plot in this cult site. Drink or hold.

Purchased grapes, but from the same plot each year and Bouchard can choose when to harvest, which was 29th August in 2020. Dark colour, 30% whole bunch, a suave intensity of fruit, very backward, not overdone, with a little coconut sweetness alongside the dark raspberry. It is a little too massive to display its quintessential elegance yet, but I think that lies beneath and will come out after racking. There may yet be more of an up-side to my conservative score.
    92-96 points
Jasper Morris MW - Inside Burgundy

Produced with fruit purchased from the same parcel each year, which is located at the top of the slope just under the tree line. In 2020, the grapes were picked on 29th August and were treated to the customary vinification: half whole clusters, very gentle pump-overs, and ultimately two winters in cask, half new. The result is lighter than this producer's Chambertin, with a bright raspberry and red cherry fruit aromas tinged with floral notes. There is plenty of finesse, although it is lacking perhaps a bit of the density one expects in this appellation. Drink 2025 - 2050.

Cape Byron The Original Single Malt Australian Whisky (700ml)
    New South Wales, AUSTRALIA
    $129. 99
    Bottle
    $1559.88 Dozen
    ABV: 47%

Co-created by one of Scotland’s most awarded Master Distillers, Jim McEwan, together with Cape Byron Distillery Co-founder and distiller Eddie Brook are two new Australian takes on a classic Scottish single malt. Many readers will already know of Jim McEwan who has more than fifty years of experience in the whisky business, having worked at Bowmore for 38 years, before overseeing the rebirth of Bruichladdich and most recently helping to get new Islay distillery, Ardnahoe, off the ground.

Two editions are on offer: A Chardonnay barrelled limited edition, and this, the Cape Byron 'Original', aged in Scotland's traditional vessel of choice: American oak x-Bourbon casks. Says Brook, “They go together like a match made in heaven. [The whisky is] not overly dominated by the oak, it’s letting the spirit sing, and we’re seeing this marriage.”

What partly accounts for the distinctive style is that the pair have resisted the temptation to use smaller barrels to ‘accelerate’ the ageing process. It's the opposite approach of most Australian distillers. “...We’ve got this climate that gives us faster maturation. Now that’s great, but it can also get too much, you can get too much tannin and then over-oaking in your whisky,” Brook explains. "To avoid this, we only mature in full format barrels, between 200 to 300 litres in size". Specially designed warehousing facilities further offset Byron’s temperature extremes.

According to McEwan, another factor is the distillery's proximity to the coast. “Walk down the barrel room... you’re getting that marine character and influence coming through" he says. "That moisture is falling on the oak staves, and slowly but surely, there’ll be a residue of salt and eventually as the whisky moves in and out, as the temperature increases, the alcohol will expand and it will touch the salt, and pull it back, and that brings a unique marine freshness to the spirit – quite different from anything else...”

No surprise that McEwan reckons fans of Bruichladdich might taste some similarities in the Cape Byron spirit. “They’re not dissimilar. There’s no peat, [Eddie’s] using American oak, I used a lot of American oak Bourbon casks as well. I’ve used wine casks – and you’ve got all the wine casks there. There’s a similarity there between what I was doing in Islay and what Eddie’s doing here."

As for the taste? Can't say there are many like this - either here or abroad - but you can appreciate why McEwen draws comparisons with Bruichladdich. Cape Byron's Original is a creamy, near voluptuous malt that defies its age. Peaches and cream come through with sweet barley and shortbread on the nose. The co-mingling of dried mango and juicy malt with the Bourbon vanilla aspects is nicely done, and there's a spicy edge adding vibrancy. At the finish, more peaches and cream, dried mango and a little grilled pineapple, pepper and coastal freshness develop. It's a whisky less about overt complexity, all about generous mouthfeel and precocious flavour. No doubt that equation will change over time. Right now, the creative forces behind the project have guaranteed one of the more compelling Aussie releases in recent years. Matured for three years in 200 litre ex-Buffalo Trace Bourbon casks. 47% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Batch 001 tasted.

Notes from the producers... The colour of a Byron Bay sunset. The palate offers soft vanilla, creme brulee and biscotti characters, layered over distinct notes of pear, coconut and buttery macadamia.

Hobart single malt is married with Tasmanian Manuka and Wildflower honey, orange zest and spices in this enticing new whisky liqueur. The honey is balanced by plenty of zesty orange peel notes. The variety of spice drives depth and complexity without overbearing. Best served with ice to chill, perfect in a cocktail with tonic, or the base of a hot toddy with warm water, honey and lemon.

Notes from the producers... Nose: Sweetness driven by the honey balanced with zesty orange peel. Opens up to spice and malty butter. Palate: A light, floral and naturally sweet palate, fruit salad and fresh cacao nibs. Finish: The finish is long, smooth, with spice and orange zest lingering. 35% Alc./Vol.

Benromach Contrasts Cara Gold Malt Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $119. 99
    Bottle
    $1439.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Presented in early 2022, this limited release in the 'Contrasts' series is made using Cara Gold barley- a crystalised malt from Crisp Malt, one of the UK’s largest malting companies. More commonly used in brewing, it's not a variety, as Laureate or Optic are. Instead its name refers to the kilning specification - i.e.- it's heated longer than regular malted barley (which reminds us of Glenmorangie Signet). In the mix is 12ppm peated malt. All the liquid is matured in first-fill bourbon barrels. It brings something genuinely new to Benromach's portfolio and has garnered lots of positive reviews online. Expect tropical fruit and malted biscuit aromas complemented by notes of pineapple, juicy apricot, black pepper, toasted malt, butterscotch and smoky honey throughout the palate. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Highland Nectar Scotch Whisky Liqueur (500ml)
    SCOTLAND
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 35%

Since the demise of Lochanora and Glenfiddich's semi-mythical whisky liqueur, the Scotch Whisky Liqueur category has remained relatively limited. Elixir Distillers (the operation behind brands like Elements of Islay and Black Tot) are filling the void with Highland Nectar. Like its predecessors, it's Highland whisky with an array of herbs, spices and fruits and sugar, including bitter orange, star anise, vanilla, lemon oil, ginger and cinnamon. Intended to be delicious on its own, it will also work in Festive cocktails. Expect notes of boiled sweets, orange peel, garden herbs, ground allspice, crystallised ginger, star anise and maple syrup, leaving cinnamon, mulled chai cider and clove lingering in the finish. 35% Alc./Vol.

2013 Philipponnat Clos des Goisses Extra Brut Champagne
    Champagne, FRANCE
    $499. 00
    Bottle
    $5988.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

Philipponnat's Clos des Goisses vineyard is one of the most famous in all of Champagne, and having been purchased by the Philipponnat family in 1935 it immediately became its crown jewel. The name is taken from the local dialect “Gois” meaning very steep, and the vineyard is the steepest, directly south-facing site in the whole of Champagne with a gradient between 30-45%. Pinot Noir dominates the cuvee with the typical blend two-thirds Pinot and one-third Chardonnay, granting Clos des Goisses with power, structure, and exceptional longevity. Work is done almost entirely by hand, and no insecticides or synthetic herbicides are used in the vineyard. The 2013 release is a blend of 85% Pinot Noir and 15% Chardonnay, aged on lees for 8 years.

Note: Product comes without gift box.

    Other Reviews....
Surpassing even the 2012 and 2008, Philipponnat's 2013 Extra-Brut Clos des Goisses looks to be the finest vintage of this cuvée in several decades, at least on first acquaintance. Deriving from only the six core parcels out of the 13 that make up the Clos des Goisses, it's a striking wine, evoking aromas of crisp yellow orchard fruit, Anjou pear, clear honey, bee pollen, stone fruit and iodine. Full-bodied, layered and vinous, its textural attack segues into a deep, concentrated and tightly wound mid-palate that's girdled by racy acids and chalky structure, before concluding with a long, saline finish. Why is it quite so good? It would appear that 2013 was the perfect storm: an early-ripening terroir in a cool, late vintage; moderately yielding Burgundian selections of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that attained full maturity; and a willingness to make a strict selection have all come together to deliver a profound Clos des Goisses. Drink: 2025 - 2055.

    William Kelley - Wine Advocate

The 2013 Extra-Brut Clos des Goisses is fabulous. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2013 is in no mood to show all its cards. The late harvest produced a bristling, intensely saline Clos des Goisses that will require years to be at its best. Even so, its depth, textural resonance and finish are so evocative as to what the future holds. The 2013 is a positively stunning Champagne and one of the best Goisses in recent memory. I can't wait to see how it develops. Dosage is 4.5 grams per liter. Drink: 2031-2053.

This is elegant and sophisticated with aromas of red apples, honey, pears, hazelnuts, praline, croissants and hints of white chocolate. Very fine, tight bubbles. Framed and structured. Focused from start to finish, with so much life ahead. 85% pinot noir and 15% chardonnay. Disgorged March 2022. Drink or hold.

Gently aromatic nose, floral and fresh. Round, generous and so delicate. Tiny bubbles are so lovely, coating the mouth in a fresh lemon, green apple, peach and nectarine quality. Sensual almost, so charming, so welcoming. Round, not massively full, but driving and persistent. You can definitely have this without food and just enjoy the balance, the detail and the nuance. Excellent winemaking here. Beautifully controlled and such a joy to drink. Dosage 4.5g/L. Drink: 2024-2040.

Tasting this a year later alongside the new release of 2014, the 2013 Champagne Clos des Goisses Extra Brut seems to be coming into its own. Composed of 85% Pinot Noir and the rest Chardonnay, and pouring a rich straw/copper hue, it’s starting to show lovely, layered aromatics as it unfolds with scents of red berries, currant, toasted croissant, frangipane, and orgeat. Full-bodied, assertive, and long on the palate, it has driving, assertive energy with fantastic concentration and acidity. Though it has broad shoulders, it remains in check with itself and offers a long, fantastic finish. It has great structure and an angular feel, with notes of Meyer lemon preserves and orange rind, and delivers wonderful energy throughout. This can hold up through a meal of sweetbreads or other rich fare. 10,723 bottles were produced. Drink 2024-2055. Disgorged in March 2022, with 4.5 grams per liter dosage.

1997 Philipponnat Clos des Goisses L.V. Extra Brut Champagne
    Champagne, FRANCE
    $1150. 00
    Bottle
    $13800.00 Dozen

The L.V. (Long Vieillissement / long ageing) release of Clos des Goisses is the rarest bottling to come from the vineyard in which only a few hundred bottles are ever released. Philipponnat's most recent L.V. comes from the stunning 1997 vintage, it's a blend of 66% Pinot Noir and 34% Chardonnay and was disgorged 25 years after harvest in 2022 bottled with a very low 4.5 g/L dosage.

    Other Reviews....
The 1997 Extra Brut Clos des Goisses L.V. is a stunning Champagne, with aromas of coffee beans, vanilla, honeycomb, pastry, ripe orchard fruits and a touch of menthol. Full-bodied, layered and textural, it’s perfectly balanced with an enveloping core of fruit and a delicate mousse. It concludes with an elegantly vinous profile and a long, sapid finish. Although already thoroughly enjoyable, it should age well over the next five to 10 years. Drink 2023 - 2035.

This has an enticing nose of pastries, apricots, raspberries, rhubarb, baklava and manuka honey. Lemon curd, mushrooms and marmalade, too. Opens up beautifully, rich yet fresh and vibrant, with tight and energetic bubbles. Late release. Drink or hold.

25 years after vintage, disgorged at the same time as the (not dissimilar in spirit) 2013, and at this point you can expect a slight softening in the pressure of the mousse, and a whole heap of extra truffle, creme patisserie, brioche and wax flavours. After so long on the lees, you might also get a touch of marmite reduction at first, so I would give it a short carafe before drinking - basically just decant for 5 minutes and then straight out into your glass. As it opens, you get waves of aromatic herbs, angelica-liqourice, touch of honeysuckle, frangipane, soot, cold ash, grilled almond, even rancio oxidative notes on the finish. An October harvest which is extremely late for Champagne, this has decades ahead of it. Today's winemaker Thierry Garnier was already there, but chef de cave was Norbert Thiebert.

The Lignier family have deep roots in the village of Morey Saint Denis and own 10.5 hectares of some of the very best vineyard sites in this village, along with plots in the two neighbouring villages of Chambolle Musigny and Gevrey Chambertin. In the last 10 years Virgile Lignier has modified his wine-making using whole-bunch vinification ranging from 30-100% depending on the vintage and the vineyard, and he has also reduced the percentage of new oak for maturation with most wines seeing around 30% making its effect seamless in the final wines. They are wines which are often very seductive at a young age which also clearly have the potential for ageing superbly. This very young domaine is now regarded among the very best in the Cotes de Nuits.

Virgile makes his Gevrey villages cuvee mostly from a parcel of .53 ha of vines planted in 1969 in Les Seuvrees which borders on to Grand cru Charmes Chambertin close to the Morey St Denis border.

Slightly riper aromas of poached plum, cassis, violet and earthy nuances give way to intense, detailed and muscular flavors that display both moderate rusticity and austerity on the solidly complex and lingering finale that is sufficiently structured to repay up to a decade of cellaring. The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin "Cuvée Bertin" is 100% whole bunch this year. It has a welcoming bouquet with more red than black fruit, touches of cassis developing in the glass, the oak neatly enmeshed. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, good depth, though here, it needs to muster more complexity and tension on the finish. Maybe for this cuvée I prefer the previous vintage. From Creux Brouillard and Seuvrées, 100% whole bunch as he has done for 5 years. Medium deep black in colour, lively fruit in the whole bunch style. Very pretty on the palate, not too concentrated, not too hot and with appropriate levels of juice. The finish extends really well. Some strawberry with black pepper at the end.

An overtly floral-suffused nose reflects additional notes of pretty red and dark cherry, raspberry and spiced tea. Here too the middle weight flavors possess a lovely sense of verve while terminating in a chiseled, clean and youthfully austere finish that is very Chambollesque in character. Drink from 2026+.

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes is matured with a lot of CO2 to protect the wine. This feels quite precocious on the nose with red cherries, kirsch and blood orange aromas, the oak nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, just a touch of sour cherry towards the granular finish. Give this 3-4 years in bottle to fully soften. Drink 2025-2038.

Another ludicrously dark purple. Virgile always gets deep colours anyway! 80% whole bunch. The bouquet is more representative of pinot fruit than the Bourgogne, with some redder notes in the mix. Generous but with a mineral acidity which underpins. Fresh red berries are the predominant flavour with a little lick of liquorice to finish. The tannins are well integrated.

Here the nose is sufficiently reduced that only discreet floral wisps can be discerned. Once again there is a lovely texture to the vibrant, delineated and utterly delicious medium weight flavors that deliver fine length on the moderately austere finish that is so refreshing that one feels like drinking it. Containing just over 80% whole bunch, the 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Vieilles Vignes has a vibrant, fresh and delineated bouquet that gains intensity in the glass. 90% whole bunch, no punching down. Dense black centre to the colour. The nose is a little richer in style, suggesting a thicker texture from this old vine, lower on the slope, bottling. Still fresh enough especially at the finish, with an extra dose of white pepper which the fruit can easily cover. Long plump finish. Some saline notes.

This tiny vineyard of en la rue de Vergy is just over three hectares in size and borders directly on to three Grand cru vineyards of Bonnes Mares, Clos de Tart and Clos des Lambrays. Virgile owns 1.9 ha of vines planted 1975 situated quite high on the slope just above Clos de Tart where the limestone is quite close to the surface, similar to the highest vineyards in Chambolle Musigny which it borders on the southern side.

A ripe yet decidedly cool and airy nose conveys the pure essence of dark currant with kirsch and rose petal top notes. The 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis en la Rue de Vergy is quite high-toned on the nose: macerated black cherries, hints of black olive and light marine scents. A slightly riper and equally expressive nose offers up its aromas of wild black cherry, poached plum, dark currant compote, violet, earth and a subtle gamy character. The rich, delicious and enveloping broad-shouldered flavors also possess a seductive texture along with notably more power on the sappy, hugely long and compact finish that is more firmly structured. 160 bottles available exclusively via Nicks Wine Merchants.

If you ever wondered what the fuss over Glenfarclas' Family casks was all about but couldn't afford to find out, don't hesitate to start here. As much as we'd like to imagine that this whisky will be enjoyed amongst friends, it has all the hallmarks of a collectable: a tiny outturn from a distillery with pedigree, first-rate liquid and a bespoke label. You might drink one and try to keep the other, but our bet is the second bottle is going to prove too tempting. In fact, you could not do much better from any of the distillery's neighbours at this age: Cask #51 buries young Macallan or Glendronach and is almost dripping with sherry, kicking off with juicy dried apricots, dried prunes, raisin cake and cinnamon over hints of chocolate oranges in a caramel setting, wrapped up in a mid palate succulence that's pure and sustained while showing extraordinary balance and mouthfeel. The malt and sherry sweetness gently bitters as the sugars wear off and spices enter. Add water, and the entire profile remains beautifully defined. It's young Speyside malt showing off in an audacious fashion that sets it apart from Glenfarclas' official releases. Distilled in 2014 and filled into a first-fill Sherry hogshead before decanting in November 2022, 160 bottles are available for those fortunate enough to get their hands on one. Anybody who knows about 'AREA 51' from UFO folklore will understand the cryptic label reference - an alien is jealously guarding a cask (word has got around, Glenfarclas make some of the best whisky in the galaxy!) 59.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

...Cork’s Franciscan Well brewery borrowed some whiskey casks, but now Jameson has taken them back to make Irish whiskey aged in craft stout barrels. On the nose, roasted coffee beans, 70% chocolate, green apples, juicy cantaloupe, and a buzz of hops. The thick, creamy mouthfeel tastes of stout, with strong chocolate and coffee notes and a tight, spicy finish. Perplexingly experimental in results. A whiskey for stout drinkers? A stout for whiskey drinkers? Incomparable to other Jameson. Funny peculiar. 81 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Jonny McCormick 2015

If you're going to start a small-batch distillery in McLaren Vale, there's one type of tipple that's a no-brainer: Shiraz gin. Which is why Two Accents took advantage of the region's grapes. Both the regular shiraz gin and this limited edition barrel-aged variety use fruit from local vines as evidenced by their crimson hue. This bottling has been batch-distilled and crafted using local botanicals and world-renowned Barossa Shiraz. To finish it off, the liquid was placed in five-year-old x-Shiraz American oak barrels for a minimum of three months, creating a smooth vanilla and berry infused style. On the nose, it's not dramatically different to the standard Two Accents Shiraz Gin, although it does feel a little richer with subtle charred oak aromas adding further complexity. Likewise on the palate which is more full bodied and reveals more winey sweetness, but nothing is overdone, and the gin base is allowed a good showing to keep things fresh. Citrus, potpourri, white pepper and woody juniper carry a medium long finish. The flavours hold up well with minimal water, giving the gin a light tawny port / vermouth character. Over ice, or perhaps garnished with red berries, this drier-styled Sloe expression will work as a refreshing aperitif. 41% Alc./Vol.

Lots of honey and toast, but also a ton of dried fruit and lively acidity that lifts this powerful, sweet mouthful. Plenty of caramel and spices at the bold, long finish. Drink now.

Apple and passion fruit are the aromatic top notes, hovering above a nose of honey and musk. Notes of honey, caramel and maple syrup seem to unite on the palate, guided and framed by the sharpest, most luminous acidity. Extremes are at work here, revealing both utter sweetness and utter acidity. Dazzling all of the senses, this wine leaves a rich aftertaste.

Domaine Charles Audoin was formed in 1972 by Charles and his oenologist wife Marie-Francoise, starting with three hectares in Marsannay. Their holding has now grown to around 14 hectares that captures some of the best parcels in Marsannay. Their son Cyril joined his father in 2000, and is now in charge of both vineyard and winemaking activities for the Domaine. Cyril is increasingly focused on vineyard health, to deliver wines with pure varietal expression and a sense of place. They are among the most serious wines from the area, and while juicy and approachable young, have the capacity to age gracefully for many years.

Marsannay has long had a reputation for fine rosé production, yet since the upgrade to appellation status in 1987 and the shift in focus to white and red wines from the commune, rosé output has dropped significantly. Thankfully Cyril Audoin is one of the few that has kept up this tradition, and his is one of leading examples on the market today.
Made from Pinot Noir grapes this a light, energetic Rose with plenty of mineral zing. Brilliant salmon colour with a watery hue. Blossoming from the glass is a mix of strawberry and peach fruits followed by some pomegranate, light musk and stony mineral notes. Tangy citrus, grapefruit and strawberry fruits overlay a cranberry and stony mineral infused back drop. Finishes dry and zesty with crisp acidity and a refreshing aftertaste.
Drink over the next 1-2 years.

Fascinated by old vines, in just 20 years, Bibi Graetz has assembled one of the largest holdings of old vineyards in Tuscany. He shuns the traditionalist Chianti constraints and unlike other Super Tuscan producers focuses on championing the local varieties of Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Colorino rather than pursuing Bordeaux blends.
Deep dark red colour with black tinged edges and a bright red hue. Alluring red cherry and red currant scents infused with crushed rose petals meld into earth, tobacco, dusty cedar, fresh herb and spice notes. Delicious vibrant red fruits decorate the mid weighted palate with notions of tobacco, earth, fresh herbs and mineral infused crushed rocks lying underneath. Bright acidity combines with savoury yet slightly chalky tannins. Superb line, tension and length with a deceptively long and finessed finish.
    Cellar 8-10 years.

The subtlety and perfumed nature of this wine is enchanting, offering flowers, orange peel and cherries. Wonderful ripe strawberries, too. Full-bodied, but not over the top, with tannins that are polished and run the length of the wine. It’s tight, but gives you every indication of a terrific wine. You want to drink it now, and you probably should do, because it’s so alluring. Yet it will age beautifully as well. Drink or hold.

The Bibi Graetz 2020 Colore is a pure expression of Sangiovese all sourced from old vines that are carefully selected in various parts of Tuscany. Much of the fruit comes from a high elevation and cool site in Lamole, or from 70-year-old vines in Bagno a Ripoli or Vincigliata near Fiesole. A small percentage of old vines in Olmo is also used. Bibi has a preference for old vines, and you can taste the lovely depth and complexity that comes through in the Colore. Compared to his other wine Testamatta, this wine has seen fewer stylistic changes over the years, and the goal has always been elegance and finesse. Colore boasts a pretty luminous quality with dark fruit aromas and wild berry. There are hints of licorice and mint as well. Mineral flavors and bright acidity are what set Colore apart.
    Drink 2023-2045.

Bright and lively on the palate, such beautifully expressed raspberry and red cherry fruit flavours alongside high-shining acidity that is so clean and precise. A supremely joyful expression with hints of caramelised strawberries and fresh mint. So sharp but so well defined with a clarity to the palate that is gorgeous. Really delivers a sophisticated, charming, characterful wine that is balanced, easy to enjoy with plenty of life. A more structured and perhaps harder to understand wine than Testamatta this year, but both have their own lovely personalities. This is so complete and abundant, muscular but controlled and full of complexity and detail - there's weight and density without heaviness. A sensational wine. Ageing 12 months in 500l French oak barrels.

Bordeaux native Christian Moueix has long had an interest in Californian wine, having first sampled the wines during his time studying at the University of California, Davis, in the late 1960s. So while he returned to Bordeaux and worked with his father at their negociant operation (which today includes chateaus such as Trotanoy, La Fleur-Petrus and Hosanna in Pomerol and Belair-Monange in Saint-Emilion), Christian would regularly travel to California culminating in 1982 when he became a partner in the Napanook vineyard. This vineyard would become the foundation for Dominus Estate a year later. In 1995 Christian bought out his partners and became sole owner of the property.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Napanook leaps from the glass with vivacious scents of fresh blueberries, black cherries, crushed blackcurrants and redcurrant jelly with hints of pencil shavings, red roses and dusty soil plus a waft of bay leaves. Medium-bodied, the palate is very tightly wound, allowing glimpses at loads of mineral and savory nuances among the taut black and red fruit notes, supported by fine-grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing with a compelling herbal lift. The 2018 Napanook showed incredibly well, with fabulous crème de cassis, spring flowers, graphite, and green tobacco aromas and flavors. With terrific ripeness, medium to full body, and ripe, yet polished tannins, this beauty should be snatched up by savvy readers. It should evolve for 15 years or more. The blend is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, aged in 20% new French oak. Drink 2021 - 2036.

In the world of heavily allocated, cult Napa Valley producers, Colgin is in the top tier competing with the likes of Screaming Eagle and Harlan Estate. Colgin produce wines in tiny quantities and with most of their bottles taken up by those lucky enough to be on their private mailing list, or by select restaurants in the US, Europe and Asia; these wines are rarely offered for sale at retail.

Colgin first starting receiving perfect scores for their wines in 2002, and these truly exceptional wines regularly achieve some of the highest combined scores for any wines around the world. 2018 Colgin IX Estate is yet another addition to this storied list of Napa Valley perfection; red wine simply doesn't get any better.

The 2018 IX Estate is a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. Very deep purple-black colored, it needs a little coaxing to reveal earth and mineral scents of iron ore, tilled soil, forest floor and truffles with ripe red and black currants, kirsch, Black Forest cake and mulberries plus nuances of tar, lilacs and Sichuan pepper. Full-bodied and built like a brick house, the palate has a rock-solid frame of firm, grainy tannins and exhilarating freshness supporting the taut, muscular fruit. Mineral and savory accents linger long into the epic finish. A thought-provoking, pensive, mesmerizing wine. Drink 2024 - 2064.

Cooler and fresher undertone. 77% cabernet sauvignon, 14% cabernet franc, 8% merlot and 1% petit verdot. Try after 2027.

Another perfect wine, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon IX Estate is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with 14% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, all from the estate on Pritchard Hill. A monster of a wine that needs serious bottle age, it reveals a dense purple hue as well as a mineral-drenched bouquet of pure crème de cassis, charcoal, spring flowers, tobacco, and earth. Just incredible on the palate, it’s full-bodied and flawlessly balanced, with remarkable purity and a finish that won’t quit. Cabernet – or red wine for that matter – doesn’t get any better! It needs a solid 5-7 years of bottle age. but this legendary wine will see its 50th birthday in fine form. Drink 2026 - 2068.

It is exceptionally rare to happen upon a new Burgundy domaine that is both set for greatness and firmly under the radar in equal measure. Domaine Coquard Loison-Fleurot (CLF) is such a property, however given they enjoy an enviable collection of six Grand Cru vineyards, and the exceptional winemaking skills shown by the talented Thomas Colladot, CLF won't remain hidden for long. For many years the grapes from the property were sold to negociants, however as these contracts begun to expire in the early 2000's they started taking back the production, and brought on Thomas Colladot in 2010 to oversee winemaking duties.

While not certified, organic practices are used in the vineyards, with all fruit hand harvested and whole cluster fermentation used where and as desired depending on the plot and vintage conditions. New oak varies between 30-50% for most wines, and élevage lasts between 15 and 18 months, before bottling is conducted in-house. The wines of Domaine Coquard Loison Fleurot are characterised by their purity and transparency of their terroirs.

This Chambolle-Musigny is sourced from the lieu-dit of Les Gamaires.

Ripe and attractively fresh aromas include those of black cherry coulis, spice and violet. The very rich and generously proportioned medium weight flavors possess a succulent mid-palate that contrasts somewhat with the textured and lingering finish where the supporting tannins are a bit raspy. The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village, whose malolactic finished at the beginning of September, matured in 25-30% new oak, has a much more defined and fresher nose than the Bourgogne Rouge with lively black cherry and crushed strawberry scents. The palate is ripe and sweet, yet nicely controlled, the oak neatly integrated with quite a precocious tart finish. Maybe it just needs a little more persistency, but this will do nicely. (This blend includes 20% whole bunch. I tried a 40% whole bunch that is being trialled in three barrels. I actually preferred this, so it will either be blended together or bottled separately - no decision has been made yet.) Drink 2025-2038.

Black with a bit of purple. The bouquet offers a similar style of ultra lush raspberry that we saw in the Bourgogne. An explosion of fruit, with density, some firm structure behind, not too much acidity but all a cohesive unit with enough fruit to cover the 13.8% alcohol. An early malolactic makes this wine easier to read.

This is the first wine to exhibit any appreciable reduction and it's enough to knock down the nose. More interesting are the rich, vibrant and intense larger-scaled flavors that possess very good mid-palate concentration before terminating in an even firmer, powerful and impressively long quality. The 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru had only finished its malolactic two weeks before my visit. Though I spent time with the sample from barrel, I think it was just a bit too soon to really get a reading on the nose. The palate is more expressive and harmonious: crunchy black cherry and blueberry fruit, fine structure, a touch of white pepper leaving the mouth tingling on the finish. Give this 4-6 years in bottle because there is a fine Charmes-Chambertin here. Drink 2026-2048.

A vivid and vibrant fresh purple, reflecting the low pH (3.30). The nose is exuberant and vivacious at the same time. This is a late malolactic wine and has been reduced, but not today. Despite the thick texture and super charged raspberry, signs of higher alcohol (in fact 15%) I don’t feel any specific heat and the Charmes-Chambertin shows a pretty long finish.

23 barrels – lucky man! Inky purple black, in colour. Starts a bit blockbuster for Echezeaux, then refines somewhat. Still, this is not for the fainthearted. Quite firm tannins but ripe enough. Domaine du Pegau Reserve is produced from 85% Grenache, 9% Syrah and 4% Mourvedre, Counoise and other varieties. While previously Cuvee Laurence was made from a specific barrel selection, today the wine is same blend as the Reserve except it has been aged in barrel for a longer period of time. The grapes are not destemmed, and the natural yeast fermentation is completed in traditional, cement vats before ageing in old, French oak barrels for an average of 40 months.
According to Laurence Feraud, the wine is aged to approximate what might happen with Pegau Reserve after ten years of aging. On average, close to 650 cases are produced each vintage of Domaine du Pegau Cuvee Laurence.

As possibly the most consistent of the five First Growth properties, Chateau Latour is held in incredibly high esteem in the wine community. And while there have been rightfully some legendary wines made at this estate over their journey, since the purchase of the property by French billionaire François Pinault in 1993 the wines have been taken to an entirely new level. The next key step was to take greater ownership of their wine's release and distribution, moving away from wine futures following the 2011 vintage, and now Chateau Latour release wines only when they feel they are at the start of their drinking window.

    Ex-Chateau release 2022.

Full-bodied, concentrated and oh-so-decadent in the mouth, it has a firm, grainy texture and lovely freshness carrying the rich, opulent fruit to an epically long finish. It is incredibly tempting to drink now, but I suspect this hedonic experience isn't a scratch on the mind-blowing, otherworldly secrets this time capsule will have to reveal given another 7-10 years in bottle and continuing over the following fifty years++. The aromas of flowers such as roses, violets and lilacs jump from the glass then turn to dark berries such as blueberries and blackberries. It's full-bodied, with velvety tannins and dense and intense with a chocolate, berry and currant character. This is juicy and rich with wood still showing a bit, but it's all coming together wonderfully. Muscular yet toned. Another perfect wine like the 2010. Try in 2022.

Just over a third of the harvest made it into the grand vin to give a wine of startling concentration and purity, with lovely, forward cassis fruit and a hint of spice on the attack. The texture is fresh but not overly tannic, and there is a surprisingly sweet, silky feel cloaking the powerful extract. Best to wait another decade before trying this, but it will last a half-century beyond that. Moderate temperatures followed a flowering disrupted slightly by cool weather and rain. The summer was dry and sunny, if somewhat cool. The Merlot was picked beginning on the 20th of September and the Cabernet 4th of October. The final blend is just over 90% Cabernet Sauvignon with most of the balance being Merlot. Drink 2032 - 2082.

Still showing a good depth of color, the wine pops with nuances of black currants, aged Cuban cigars, herbs, flowers, and oceanic influences. On the palate, the wine coats your palate with powerful layers of creamy, vibrant, refined, regal fruits with a touch of salt. The seamless finish delivers a non-stop barrage of black and red fruits that build, expand, and linger. This is the type of wine that stops you in your tracks, makes you think, and return for another swirl, sniff, and sip, because you could not believe the wine was that good. Still, an adolescent, another decade in the bottle will create an even better tasting experience. Drink from 2032-2075.

The 2010 Château Latour is a monumental wine that exemplifies what greatness in Bordeaux can be. Still deep ruby/purple in color, it offers a stunning bouquet of blackcurrants, tobacco leaf, leather, and graphite. Full-bodied and deeply concentrated, it has a layered, expansive mouthfeel, building tannins, and the unmistakable class and regalness that define Latour. Just now entering the early stages of its prime, this beauty will be drinking brilliantly long after I’m gone. Drink 2025-2100.

Joseph Phelps was a successful construction executive and entrepreneur whose early interest in wine led him to establish vineyards on a 670-acre former cattle ranch in Napa Valley. Over the next 40 years Joe became one of the most respected figures in the California wine industry, building Joseph Phelps Vineyards into a critically-acclaimed winery internationally known for its iconic wines and unwavering commitment to quality. In 1974 Joe Phelps had the idea to make a separate cuvee each year, one that would represent the finest wine he could make from each vintage, and he called it Insignia. While his original intention was to allow Insignia to be any varietal he chose, it become increasingly clear that red Bordeaux varieties – particularly Cabernet Sauvignon - were ideally suited to Napa Valley and would consistently yield the best wines of the vintage. From 1977 on, Cabernet Sauvignon was never less than 50% of the Insignia blend and gradually became the dominant varietal. Joe’s vision evolved: Insignia would always be a proprietary red Bordeaux-style blend. Over forty years later, Insignia is recognized as one of the world’s most iconic wines.
A blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec. Magnificent colour featuring an impenetrable pitch black heart and a very deep black dark red hue. Wafting from the glass are seductive scents of ripe blackcurrants, liquorice and black cherries which are complexed by notions of earthy dark chocolate, toasty vanillin cedar and spicy tobacco. Gloriously rich and powerful, every corner of the palate is saturated in decadent blackcurrant, liquorice, dark chocolate and black cherry fruits. Firm yet beautifully integrated tannins provide a muscular feel to what is otherwise an opulent texture. Notions of scorched earth, spicy vanillin cedar and mocha linger on the back half. Concludes exceptionally long with terrific density and richness. Superb.
Drink over the next 10-15 years.

A very aromatic Insignia with pencil-shaving and graphite highlights to the dark fruit and blackberries. Full-bodied, yet tensioned and vertical, with very fine tannins that run deep and layered in the wine. Needs time to come together, but fantastic tension and structure.

The 2019 Insignia is composed of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec. The vineyard sources this year include: 32% Yountville (Oak Knoll District), 23% Banca Dorada (Rutherford), 14% Suscol (South Napa Valley), 14% Home Ranch (St. Helena), 12% Las Rocas (Stags Leap District), 3% Barboza (Stags Leap District) and 2% El Venadito (Oak Knoll District). The wine is aging for 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels. Deep garnet-purple in color, it needs a little swirling to unlock a gorgeous perfume of black cherry compote, stewed plums and blackcurrant pastilles with hints of bay leaves, red roses, underbrush and pencil lead plus a hint of menthol. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers impactful black fruit preserves layers with finely grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and layered. (Tasted as a barrel sample.)

Much more expressive and complex compared to the backward, masculine Backus Vineyard (which is common when comparing these two cuvées), the 2019 Insignia offers a gorgeous perfume of crème de cassis, chocolate, lavender, dried flowers, tobacco, and leafy herbs. Possessing full-bodied richness, a layered, seamless texture, gorgeous tannins, and just a classy, balanced character, this beauty is going to shine with just 3-4 years of bottle age yet still cruise in cold cellars for 30 years. It actually reminds me slightly of the 1997.

Tasted from barrel, the 2019 Insignia is a mere infant. Swaths of tannin wrap around a core of dark fruit. The 2019 is a brooding, potent Insignia that is going to need time to come around.

Domaine Pegau Cuvee A Tempo is made from a blend of equal parts, Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Roussanne. The wine comes from parcels that are farmed using 100% organic farming techniques, and made its debut with the 2014 vintage. Vinification and ageing is performed in a combination of French oak barrels, stainless steel tanks and cement egg shaped vats. The production is quite small, with about 100 cases being produced in total each year.
Bright pale straw core with straw tinged edges and a watery hue. Intense ripe pear aromas intermix with hints of peach, dried honey and spicy apricot. Subtle crème brulee, citrus and wet stone notes are also evident. Rich spicy pear and apricot fruits are complimented by honeysuckle, crème brulee and citrus elements. Despite being texturally full it finishes with excellent freshness and a lingering stony minerality on the long refined aftertaste.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Bottled in May, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée A Tempo Blanc is another incredible white from this estate. More melon, exotic tropical, and even hints of pear-like fruits as well as green almond and chalky mineral notes define the nose, and it’s racy and pure on the palate, with hints of licorice and salty minerality, bright acidity, a laser focused texture, and a great finish. Give it a year or two and enjoy over the following two decades. Drink 2022-2043.

Within a short period of time Antoine Foucault is already making some of the most exciting wines in the Loire Valley. The Domaine du Collier was created in 1999 by Antoine (son of Charly Foucault from the famed Clos Rougeard) and his wife Caroline. Having worked at Clos Rougeard for four years and still at the young age of 26 he took the opportunity to buy four-hectares of vines (through his family) in the commune of Brézé in the best lieu-dit of ‘La Ripaille’. The estate comprises 6 hectares with the vast majority of the estate planted to Chenin Blanc (including some 100 year old vines) and just under a hectare of Cabernet Franc.

Antoine is dedicated to natural viticulture, without the use of chemical treatments, fertilizers, or weed killers. The harvest is manual with strict sorting carried out in the vineyards. In his deep cellar, Antoine does not use commercial yeast, and doesn’t treat the wine with sulphur until bottling. The end results are brilliant and it is probably no surprise that demand for them is very high and as a result they can be very hard to find.

    Tesseron XO Cognac Collection 4-Pack (4 x 50ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE
    $135. 00
    Bottle
    $1620.00 Dozen

A budget-friendly approach to the Tesseron XO collection.

Well known by wine lovers as the proprietors of Chateau Pontet Canet and Lafon Rochet in Bordeaux, the Tesseron family are also one of the finest exponents of extra-aged Cognacs. Dealing almost exclusively in X.O, their Grand Champagne vineyards were purchased in the 19th century by Abel Tesseron, whose face features on the company’s logo. Grandsons, Alfred and Gérard carry on the business today and in 2003 made the decision to release a range under their own name. A welcome departure from the big four (Remy, Hennessy, Martell and Courvoisier), Tesseron’s XO house style epitomises a finer, more elegant side of cognac with the range including eaux de vies up to seventy years old. Given that several of their bottlings command luxury prices, this tasting pack composed of one 50ml bottle each of Lot Nos. 90, 76, 53 and 29 gives cognac lovers the chance to explore the range with a minimum outlay.
