After many years of ownership by Champagne Taittinger, Bouvet Ladubay is once again fully owned by the Monmousseau family who have continuously run the business since their purchase in 1932. Bouvet Ladubay employs precisely the same wine making process as Grand Marque Champagne, delivering French sophistication at an everyday price. The grapes for the Bouvet 'Blanc' Methode Traditionnelle are Chenin Blanc, which had been grown in the Loire Valley prior to the Roman conquest of France. Bouvet source their grapes from 120 properties around Saumur - spread over an area of 15 x 30 kilometres. The notion of using such a diversity of vineyard sites is to provide complexity to the base wines. Domaine Chandon in the Yarra Valley employ a similar process. These 120 micro climates each provide the blender with base material that when blended together will create the sensation of considerable complexity. The art of blending is critical and at Bouvet the third generation of blenders from the same family are in charge - in fact they have been creating the blend for the last 60 years.
Produced from predominately Chenin Blanc grapes with the addition of some Chardonnay. An exuberant mousse dissipates to reveal a pale straw coloured base that has pale gold tinged edges and a fine persistent bead flowing through it. Lifted ripe pear and red apple scents are followed by some quince and yeasty brioche like notes. Nicely rounded and full in the mouth the palate features pear and apple fruits over brioche and yeast lees characters. Finishes dry with lively acidity and a dash of quince. Concludes gently creamy and very flavoursome.

This is a superbly delicate and carefully finessed wine that interprets the growing season with its alternating cold and hot intervals in an impeccable manner. The Bartolo Mascarello 2018 Barolo puts Nebbiolo and the vintage seamlessly together like lock and key. It opens to a beautiful drinking experience. The bouquet shows detail and finely tuned aromas of redcurrant, violet, rusty nail and blood orange. On the palate, this Barolo is so shiny and polished that it feels like silk. Without a doubt, this is one of the top wines of 2018. Drink 2026-2050.

The 2018 Barolo is a wine of extreme elegance and nuance. Dried red cherry, tobacco, dried flowers, mint and sweet spice are all nicely lifted in this sublime, delicate Barolo. All the elements fall into place so effortlessly. The 2018 naturally does not have the body of more important years, but it offers tons of persistence and fine balance. It has closed down quite a bit since I first tasted it a few months ago, which is probably a good sign. An opened bottle just got better and better over time. Drink 2028-2043.

Lush and pure, the 2018 Barolo is a medium and transparent ruby hue, with aromas of fresh roses, wet stone, and ripe raspberry. This medium-bodied red is luxurious. with a silky and viscous texture and generous notes of ripe red cherry, warming cardamom spice, and soft earth. Elegant and long through the palate, with no harshness, it is drinking beautifully now or will continue to drink well over the next 15 years. Fermentation saw 45 days on the skins with a submerged cap. Drink 2023-2038.

Between September and November, Drouin harvests thirty organically grown apple varieties including bitter, bitter-sweet, sweet and sharp cider, then naturally ferments them. Typically kept for months in vats and tuns, young cider is distilled to produce fruity spirits destined to be sold as young calvados, while cider that’s kept longer is distilled around June to produce a more robust spirit better suited to long ageing. Drouin uses casks that may have previously contained sherry, port, rivesaltes (a type of sweet wine) and banyuls (French fortified wine). In this example, the Réserve is a blend of several distillates mostly aged in smaller used casks. The style intends to offer a nice balance between primary orchard fruit notes and spices. 40% Alc./Vol.

Fully matured in Oloroso butts as evidenced by the spectacular colour, this is the third and final bottling of a limited edition series making up the core cask types of Lindores Abbey MCDXCIV. Our tasting from a 20ml sample revealed a medium bodied style that falls into a fresher sherried spectrum. Early cocoa and walnut fudge are followed by prunes and fruit bread while late hints of dried figs, cinnamon and fruity dark chocolate add interest. Elegance is the key word here, which is unexpected for such a relatively young malt. 49.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Notes from the producers... Nose: Mellow fruity prunes, dates, molasses, touches of vanilla and milk chocolate. Palate: Mellow dried fruits, molasses, dark chocolate with layers of cinnamon and ginger combined with a pleasant nuttiness like walnuts and chestnuts. Smooth texture. Finish Medium to long.

The second release in the "Casks of Lindores" series, created to showcase the award winning spirit of Lindores Abbey distillery and the three core cask types used to mature its flagship malt. This one's matured exclusively in STR (shaved, toasted & re-charred) red wine barriques. Our tiny sample suggested a youthful, zesty, full-flavoured dram defined by rich oak character, balanced by fresher orchard fruit notes through the finish - in particular ripe plums and pears. Straightforward but very tasty, it comes bottled at 49.4% vol. with zero chill filtration.
Notes from the producers... Nose: Mellow fruity apricot jam, toffee notes and a hint of cinnamon combined with butter and custard. Palate: Sweet and spices. Mellow plums and red berries, treacle, cinnamon spice and a pleasant woody smoky note. Very smooth, silky texture. Finish: Medium to long with spices, honey and caramel notes.

Other reviews... Golden Promise, superb barley (think Macallan), but lower yields than those of newer and blander strains. What would you think the industry did when those came out? Bingo. Colour: white. Nose: chevalier was deeper and sweeter on the nose, golden promise is fatter, less 'sweet', more on grassy and fattish elements, oils, earths, root vegetables… Chevalier just killed you, this is more introspective… Mouth: indeed, fat, rawer, tougher, probably needing more aging (and perhaps proper sherry casks). Even at 43%, it is a tad tough and brutal. Finish: artichokes, perhaps? Comments: I could down a magnum of the chevalier, I'm not sure I would quaff a wee glass of the golden promise in this state. But what you do get here is the potential. Remember the old saying, when the new-make's too good, the whisky will be crap. 84 points - whiskyfun.com

Other reviews... Obviously not whisky, but they've used Chevalier, an older, higher-quality strain of barley. In French, chevalier means knight, just so that you're in the know. Colour: white. Nose: exactly what we've always dreamed of, some proper barley eau-de-vie, rather than just raw newmake. I find this utterly stunning, deep, complex, with some buttered caramel, quince pie, dried jujubes, goji, even umami, lees, ale… Wow wow wow! Mouth: perfect. This is the spirit. Barley in majesty, breads, ales and stouts, figs, fudge, butterscotch, pear liqueur… Even the strength of 43% vol. is perfect in this context. Finish: medium, earthy, terroiry (hey hey) and just f…… good. Apologies. Comments: I remember when I first tried white Clairin from Haiti. Similar feelings. Much of their vineyards are planted in the deep chalk soils of Cramant and Chouilly grand crus, along with a parcel in the Marne near Epernay where they have some Pinot Meunier. While they own 8 hectares of vineyards, three quarters of their production is sold off to Laurent-Perrier, keeping only the best parcels for their own label.
Prisme is a 100% Chardonnay cuvee exclusively from old vine parcels owned by the family, namely Les Bergeries (Cramant, planted in 1984), Le Mont Aigu (Chouilly, planted in 1970 and 1979), and Les Caurés (Chouilly, planted in 1946 and 1988). The emphasis with Prisme is to display the transparent nature that the chalk soils of Cramant and Chouilly lend to these wines. Vinification occurs in 96% stainless steel, with the balance in neutral oak barrels. Following 7 months on lees the wine is assembled and sees a further 44 months on lees in bottle, and 12 months resting in the cellar before release. Dosage is a very low 1.5g/L.

The NV Extra-Brut Prisme . 17 is a taut, chiseled wine, based on the 2017 vintage with 13% reserve wines. Offering up notes of citrus zest, verbena, warm bread and fresh herbs, it's medium to full-bodied, elegantly textural and incisive, with racy acids underpinning an attractive core of ripe fruit. In certain years Richard Fouquet will release a wine solely from the Mont-Aigu parcel (planted 1970), however in the warmer years he chooses to combine fruit from this warm site with the cooler exposure of the Caures vineyard (planted 1946). This 100% Chardonnay cuvee is vinified in stainless steel and rests on lees for 6 months, before a further 68 months on lees in bottle prior to being disgorged with 1.5g/L dosage.

Incorporating some 16% of lieu-dit Caurés to temper the richness of Montaigu in sunny vintages, Guiborat's 2015 Extra-Brut De Caurés à Montaigu offers up aromas of crisp green apple, white flowers, citrus oil, freshly baked bread and wet stones. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and seamless, it's racy and charming, with a pure core of fruit, a pillowy mousse and a chalky finish. Drink 2023 - 2038.

Domaine Dubreuil-Fontaine is one of the true quiet achievers in Burgundy, where they produce outstanding wines from their home in the picturesque hamlet of Pernand-Vergelesses, just north of Beaune. It's perhaps this setting, away from the feverish scouring of wines further north in the Cote de Nuits, that has allowed the domaine to fly under the radar. Certainly it has meant these wines can be found for a fraction of what we're now accustomed to seeing from Burgundy.
The domaine is under the guidance of fifth generation winemaker and owner Christine Gruere-Dubreuil, who has been joined recently by her daughter Clémentine. While they farm vineyards as far south as Volnay and Pommard, much of their production is centred around Pernand, including excellent sites on the Corton grand cru hillside, along with the leading premier cru of Savigny-les-Beaune; Les Vergelesses. All reds are 100% destemmed before spending 12-15 months in barrel, with 35% new wood used on the grand cru wines to around 15% maximum on the remainder of their range.

A very ripe nose freely reveals its aromas of mocha, dark currant, plum liqueur and plenty of earth character. The sleek, delicious and nicely vibrant flavors possess very good richness that terminate in a balanced finale where a hint of bitter pit fruit eventually emerges. Drink through 2028+.

The 2020 Beaune Montrevenots 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet with raspberry punnet, wild strawberry and crushed stone aromas, rose petal emerging with time. The palate is silky smooth with pliant tannins, fine acidity, the 25% new oak seamlessly integrated and maintaining that velutinous texture on the finish. Lovely. Drink 2024-2038.

A delicious mid weighted Rhone with a mix of red to black fruits, excellent freshness and slightly chewy tannins.

Domaine Les Aphillanthes is comprised of 30 hectares and located near Gigondas in the Rhone Valley. Farmed organically and biodynamically, proprietors Daniel and Hélène Boulle maintain a high commitment to quality, keeping only the finest 80% of grapes for their own use and selling the rest off. The 2020 releases are not as dark fruited and show more freshness and an energetic feel.
An equal parts blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. Very deep dark red black in colour with a vibrant dark red hue. Seductive aromas of red to dark raspberries, red liquorice and red cherries intermingle with scorched earth and light pepper notes. On the mid weighted palate rich dark raspberry, black cherry and red liquorice fruits make for an intriguing mix of flavours. Infusions of herbs du Provence, scorched earth and blackpepper lend further interest. Slightly chewy tannins finishing with excellent freshness and a long dark raspberry, red liquorice, peppered herb infused aftertaste. Delicious.

Domaine des Escaravailles Le Ventabren is typically a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Carignan that is aged in concrete vats for 12 months. The Grenache and Carignan vines are 60 years old whilst the Syrah comes from 30 year old vines.
Deep black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Spicy dark raspberry, liquorice and red cherry scents infused with pepper sail from the glass with subtle scorched earth and fresh herb scents also evident. Rich, juicy and spicy the moreish palate is awash with dark raspberry and liquorice fruits which meld into a scorched earth, herbs du Provence and peppered meat back drop. Good flesh with a sturdy tannin structure and energetic acidity providing the framework. Concludes long, succulent and peppery.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.

Lastly, and a wine that will be a candidate for perfection in 4-5 years, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Centenaire reveals a deep ruby/purple hue as well as extraordinary notes of black cherries, licorice, iron, nori, and peppery garrigue. As with the base 2019, the estate did an incredible job with the tannins, and this wine is flawlessly balanced, with ultra-fine tannins, no hard edges, and the sheer class to evolve for 25+ years. This is a perfect example of power with no sensation of weight or heaviness. The blend in 2019 is 84% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre, and 6% Syrah, and it wasn’t destemmed and was brought up mostly in concrete tanks, with just 6% in very old barrels. Drink 2021 - 2046.

The 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Centenaire is approximately 84% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre and 6% Syrah, predominantly from a vineyard planted in the late 19th century. Aged almost entirely in foudre, it nevertheless hints at smoke and campfire on the nose while remaining dominated by black cherries and red raspberries. Full-bodied and concentrated, with ample depth and richness, this really shows its class on the long, silky, mouthwatering finish. It should drink well for upwards of a decade. Tasted blind. Quartz Blanc is one of the few blends produced by Vaccelli, using a mix of four white grape varieties native to Corsica: Carcaghjolu Bianco, Riminese, Ghjenuvese and Cudiverta. A relatively new wine in the range, the vines for Quartz were planted in 2013 on sandy granitic soils. Quartz displays a harmonious balance between the fleshy citrus and green fruit, supported by white florals, honey, and a sappy bitter spice finish. Layered over this profile is a hint of curry leaf and wisps of smoke normally associated with premium Jura Savagnin.

With the world of fine wine expanding all the time, new names continually rise to prominence and quality estates don't stay hidden for long. Domaine de Vaccelli is one such winery, deserving of their reputation as one of the most exciting projects in the market today. Bottles of Vaccelli are now quickly finding their way on to Michelin star restaurant wine lists, and into the cellars of collectors around the globe. This tiny winery based in Cognocoli-Monticchi on the island of Corsica champions local varieties Sciaccarellu (red) and Vermentinu (white), elevating each to a level of refinement seen only in the greatest wines of the world.
Initially formed in the 1960's by Roger Courrèges, the estate is now run by his grandchildren Nathalie and Gérard Courrèges. Certified organic since 2008, all vineyard work is performed by hand, while only native yeast is used during vinification which occurs in stainless steel tanks. As to the style of wines, Vermentinu, or Vermentino as it's more commonly spelt, is the most important white varietal on Corsica where it excels in the wind swept sea side hills. Often fragrant and delicately fruited, Vaccelli produces examples displaying vibrant minerality with a gentle spiciness and ample racy acidity. These are complex whites that speak clearly of their island home and are notable for their supreme detail and balance.
On the red side, Sciaccarellu is the dominant variety where it thrives in the dry soils of Corsica. Known as Mammolo in its home of Tuscany, here it produces wines pale in colour yet generous in fruit and spice, with the slightly elevated alcohol balanced by fresh acidity. You'd be forgiven for thinking these were high altitude Nebbiolo such as Gattinara, and drinkers of these northern Italian reds will find much to enjoy here.
The Vaccelli Rouge is a blend of two parcels of 25+ year old Sciaccarellu vines, one exposed east-west, and the other one north-south. Flavours range from dark plum and kirsch to blood orange and mint, framed by firm, al dente tannins. Light in body yet powerful in flavour, there's more than a passing resemblance to alto Piedmont Nebbiolo here, and would charm drinkers seeking an alternative to those northern Italian reds.

Much of the reputation for Corsican wine lays in the production of cheap and plentiful rosé, yet Vaccelli target a more serious and food friendly example. Vaccelli Rosé is 100% Sciaccarellu from vines averaging 30 years old and planted on slopes of sandy granitic soils. Pale onion skin in colour, juicy white strawberry and peach fruit abounds married to citrus peel and white florals. A gastronomic rosé with ageing potential of 6-8 years.

The color is beginning to evolve slightly, but it's the nose in particular that is absolutely fascinating. It evokes candied grapefruit, cranberries, and an exquisite note of kirsch. The texture on the palate is based on an almost perfect balance between power and finesse, with high-quality tannins. While most other Japanese distilleries have followed the methods of Scotland, Mt. Fuji Distillery is influenced by major whisk(e)y producers all around the world, which explains this tri-part blend distilled using three different methods, each giving their own unique flavour profile. Although the exact mash-bill isn't stated, the backbone of the spirit is reported to be a 'Canadian style' grain, made with a batch distillation in something similar to a kettle still. That's supported by a Bourbon-style distillate using a doubler, and a third Scotch-style light grain put through a continuous multi-column still. The triptych of profiles comes through in the flavours. Fuji smells a little more malt-like than typical single grain with creamy soda and vanilla enhanced by delicate fruity notes like stewed pears and caramelised apples. It's also fuller, richer and with more texture than you'd anticipate. There are the expected lashings of vanilla wafer, however they hover over a backdrop of poached orchard fruits and warming wood spices, followed by more creamy soda, hints of dried banana and a lovely flourish of American oak giving a Bourbonesque or light rye character to the finish. This release was initially for bars only, but from early 2021 it became available to regular tipplers in Japan and then abroad. A good thing. It's a single grain with terrific mouthfeel, and one that deserves a wide audience. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

For three generations, the Valette family has lived in Chaintré, a small village on the border between Mâconnais and Beaujolais. They grow only Chardonnay on fifteen acres scattered in five villages. The domain was created in 1977, when Gérard Valette was one of the first in the area to leave the local cooperative and start bottling his own wine. After completing wine training, son Philippe joined in 1990 and then decided to convert the family's vineyards to organic farming, using biodynamic methods since 1992.
The Valette's are known for their specific style, wines raised with thorough lees-contact and without racking. They have remained true to this style of winemaking since the 1950s. It is a sort of family tradition that requires accuracy as well as painstaking detail knowledge of the indigenous yeasts and the wine’s proneness to develop reductive flavours. If the estate's wines through the late 1990s were simply powerful, textural examples of high-quality white Burgundy, the wines being released today belong in a category of their own. Complex and sapid, these are fascinating wines although you should be prepared to find wines that are quite different from any of the Valettes' neighbours. Anyone who appreciates the Jura bottlings of Jean-François Ganevat or the Thomas Pico Chablis wines is likely to love them.
Vire-Clesse Et Pourtant.. hails from plots where the soils contain high levels of limestone lending an extra level of freshness and intensity to the wine. Average age of the vines here is 60 years old, and following vinification the wine is aged for 30 months in older barrels. As with all of Valette's wines, this will benefit from extended aeration so decanting is recommended.

Gilles Dumangin returned to the family Domain in 2000 after studying in London. A small wine merchant, not far from Harrods had introduced him to a Tain L'Hermitage finished single malt. It was love at first taste. Gilles was inspired to create his own delicately tannic 'Ratafias Champenois' (a fortified wine made with Champagne must and Champagne based spirits) using second-fill barrels from the Côtes-du-Rhône Septentrionales (x-Syrah). He now applies the same principles to single cask whiskies - this time with a Champagne twist, using the same barrels that aged his Ratafia Champenois.
The Dumangin whiskies follow in the footsteps of French pioneers like Michel Couvreur - only there's another layer of expertise bought to the table. While Gilles clearly has a 'magic touch' when it comes to selecting and maturing world class singles and grains, he isn't just a buyer and bottler. He's an acclaimed winemaker applying his know-how. Whiskies arrive in Champagne to complete their maturation in 228 litre barriques in the cellars at Chigny-les-Roses. Arran ten year old now comes with a puff of smoke: It's the newly presented Machrie Moor matured for a decade in first-fill bourbon casks, and the third in a series of light to medium peated styles offered by the distillery. Described as a bit of a chameleon that changes in the glass, it is something like a Port Charlotte only with less smoke and more fruit - or perhaps more like a Campbeltowner? The nose delivers what the label suggests - peat, only in a dry, non-confrontational manner that becomes more polite and fruity after air contact. The most likeable thing about this whisky is the twist on the palate. Expecting something peaty, instead you get a delicious fruit-salad; the juiciness of the malt makes for a sweet, succulent finish before leaving you with an oily, warming, brine and pepper tang. While the Laval family has been growing vines for four generations, it was not until 1971 that Georges Laval began producing estate-bottled Champagne. Now under the direction of George's son Vincent, this is one of the great under the radar properties in the region. Laval’s vineyard holdings comprise just 2.5 hectares, most in the premier cru village of Cumières. Across the seven parcels the average vine age is over 30 years, with the oldest vines of the estate over 70 years of age. Organic viticulture has been practiced since 1971, and despite the challenges of this approach in Champagne, they are now certified by Ecocert. Laval’s wines are harvested ripe and almost never chaptalized, and fermentation takes place in barrel, with indigenous yeasts. The wines are bottled late, usually about ten months after the harvest, and they are neither fined, filtered nor cold-stabilized.

While the Laval family has been growing vines for four generations, it was not until 1971 that Georges Laval began producing estate-bottled Champagne. Now under the direction of George's son Vincent, this is one of the great under the radar properties in the region. Laval’s vineyard holdings comprise just 2.5 hectares, most in the premier cru village of Cumières. Across the seven parcels the average vine age is over 30 years, with the oldest vines of the estate over 70 years of age. Organic viticulture has been practiced since 1971, and despite the challenges of this approach in Champagne, they are now certified by Ecocert. Laval’s wines are harvested ripe and almost never chaptalized, and fermentation takes place in barrel, with indigenous yeasts. The wines are bottled late, usually about ten months after the harvest, and they are neither fined, filtered nor cold-stabilized.
Les Hautes Chevres is a tiny selection of old vine Pinot Meunier planted in 1930, 1947, 1965, and 1971. Unfortunately the 1930 parcel needed to be replaced following the 2014 harvest, yet these are still some of the oldest Meunier vines in the area. Situated at the top of the slope within the Cumieres vineyard, this tiny parcel sits on a layer of fine clay over a firm limestone bedrock base, and produces Meunier with a rich and multi-dimensional profile, further heightened as the wine ages in bottle. This micro-cuvée is one of the rarest and most sought after in the region. Bottled with zero dosage.

Vincent produces one of the most singular expressions of Rosé Champagne, very much in the style of red Burgundy with bubbles. A rough split of 50/50 Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier are picked as whole bunches and carefully crushed by foot with a healthy amount of skin contact leading to a bold, vibrant red colour. Expect a rich, layered, and unquestionable detailed rosé unlike anything else you will have encountered.

A buoyant fluffy white mousse subsides to reveal a pale straw coloured base that has a steady stream of bubbles coursing through it. Distinct pear and ripe apple scents jump out of the glass with some quince and sherbet like notes also evident. Light and airy across the palate pear, green apple and citrus flavours overlay a delicate baked bread background. Vivid acidity leads into a mouth-wateringly fresh aftertaste.

It's seen here from the bright, just-cut green apple and citrus summery scents through to the utterly delicious lemon sorbet crunch and bubbly zing on the palate. An American with a traditional sweetness that carries on consistently through the dram in the form of fruit notes. The finish reminded the Cadenhead's tasting panel of a piña colada cocktail. Even from a tiny sample, aromas billow from the glass, mixing up tinned peaches with vanilla gobstopper and Bounty bar. Eminently sipable with a nice fruity-oak-corn sweetness, the finish is nutty and riddled with sweet wood shavings followed by late cinnamon and coconut. Doing what any good indie should do, Cadenheads have bottled a whiskey that takes you off the beaten track. Aficionados should have fun comparing it against mainstream styles. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... It's good that those very distinguished people at Cadenhead's would have made it clear that this was ex-bourbon barrel. You never know… Colour: straw. Nose: it's almost as if this was matured in fresh oak for only two or three years and then re-racked in refill. Soft vanillas, brioches and sponge cakes, barley syrup (yes), nougat and popcorn, perhaps tangerines… Mouth: super good! More grasses and herbs, even mosses, green spices, citrus peel… Not sure all that is very 'bourbon', but I really like this development. Goes towards cinnamon and soft peppers then, which was more expected, naturally. Finish: rather long, a tad oakier. A feminine, middle-weight Highlander with a slightly floral edge. The aromas include poached orchard fruits (apples, pears), whipped cream, cinnamon and oak shavings, all echoed in the mouth. Biscuity malt runs into a lightly honeyed, waxy, warming finish with late fruity dark chocolate. A crowd pleaser, though none the worse for that. Can take a dash of water to further soften the edges, but it's not essential. 55.9% Alc./Vol. 233 bottles from a Bourbon barrel. Non chill filtered.
John McDougall is something of an industry legend, consulting to famous names like Aultmore, Glenfiddich, Kilchoman and Springbank. He has been instrumental in the MacDuff family securing whiskies to bottle under their own brand name, ‘Golden Casks'. Previous to that, The House of MacDuff were primarily dealing with miniatures and ‘micro’ bottles, earning them a place in the Guinness Book of Records for "The Smallest Bottle of Whisky in the World”. With a customs approved duty free warehouse, they now market their own casks - which is how they met McDougall. Since then, he's continued to consult, helping to choose stand-out barrels and deciding when to bottle. MacDuff now concentrate on building their own brands rather than working for clients. We were so enamoured with many of their selections, we decided shipping these was obligatory. Like several other indies, they focus on x-Bourbon maturations giving the whiskies a full showing with no interference from secondary finishings. Instead, each distillery’s character is presented in high definition giving you a fabulous range of grains and malts to choose from at direct import prices.

Frederic Burrier and his family own the historic Chateau de Beauregard and the small but equally important Chateau du Clos, both based in Pouilly, along with half ownership of Domaine de la Rochette based in Milly-Lamartine. Frederic is a staunch supporter of the wines of Pouilly, and led the commission into the possibility of premier crus for appellation. Winemaking is very traditional, and while he has tried newer methods and equipment, Frederic prefers the results he gets by crushing the grapes prior to using his Vaslin hydraulic press. As of 2020 vintage, many of the plots worked in Pouilly are now classified as premier cru.

Moderate wood sets off notes of exotic aromas that include pineapple, lychee, melon and touches of both white and yellow-fleshed fruit. The dense, powerful and serious medium weight flavors possess an opulent mouth feel before culminating in noticeably warm finish. Also referred to as 'Pale & Dry' Drouin's VSOP lands at a minimum of four years old. Produced from Pays d'Auge fruit with a portion aged in small 225 litre x-wine casks, plus a number of x-fortified wine casks, it's described as a crisp, focused and appetising Calvados showing lovely balance and persistence. Expect notes of sweet cider, baked apples, gingerbread, vanilla and cinnamon with a supple, generous palate and an apply finish. 40% Alc./Vol.
