- Pere Labat 59 Rhum Agricole Guadeloupe Navy Strength White Rum (700ml)GUADELOUPE$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 59%
From the small island of Marie-Galante, a part of Guadeloupe, about one hour boat-ride from the mainland. Here the sugar cane fields, distilleries and warehouses sit in a pristine environment, employing indigenous sugarcane varieties and distilling exclusively from fresh pressed cane juice.
Distillerie Poisson (est. c.1860) is the oldest operation of its kind on Marie-Galante and custodian of one of the most venerable stills in the Caribbean. Built in 1916, not much has changed in the last century, but in 2007, Guadeloupe native, Jean-Cedric Brot purchased the distillery and committed to reinvigorating the storied spirits that made it famous. He has named his brand after Père Labat (Father Labat), a multi-talented French Dominican missionary who introduced Charentaise distillation, the same method used to make Cognac. It made for a rum that was more "floral and round instead of sharp and burning". Today, four kinds of cane are used: red, white, blue, and gray. Some are grown on the estate, some are purchased from local growers. All are hand-cut and brought to the distillery by ox-drawn carts. 72 hour fermentations yield a vin de canne at 5% abv. Distillation takes place in one of two copper creole column stills which have eleven stripping plates and four rectifying/enriching plates. The spirit comes off the still between 69% and 71% abv. The Rhum blanc is placed in open top wooden foudres for 10-15 days and demineralized water is added to bring it down to proof. Pere Labat has several variants, but this edition is bottled at "Island Proof". Aside from being the ultimate choice for a Tiki Punch and a stunner in Daiquiris, it is considered by some as one of the best rhum agricoles in the world. The rums are bottled without chill filtration to maximise the raw fruitiness of the cane. 59% Alc./Vol.

Amrut Triparva Single Malt Indian Whisky (700ml)Bangalore, INDIAReduced from $199.99$179. 99Bottle$2159.88 DozenABV: 50%This is India’s first-ever foray into triple distilled single malt equating to just 5400 bottles worldwide. Of the global allocation, just a few hundred bottles have arrived to meet the demands of connoisseurs and collectors in Australia. Ashok Chokalingam, Head Distiller at Amrut comments, “Amrut has pretty much produced a range of uncompromisingly innovative single malt whiskies such as the Amrut Spectrum (multiple oak wood barrel single malt), Naarangi (a single malt with orange influence), Rye Single Malt to name a few. This latest addition of Triparva, triple distilled single malt, kind of completes the course. I think, for any distillery to come and do what Amrut has done in India will take a long time and the depth and variety of what Amrut has is unmatched. We are proud of what we have done so far and cemented our position as the ‘pioneers’ of single malt making in India.” Triparva is Hindi for "in three parts". Very limited stocks. 50% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Nose: really fruity, as expected. Pineapple on syrup, banana, nectarine and guava. Close to Irish whiskey of course. There’s more than a hint of vanilla from the wood as well, with some ginger, mint and creamy coconut too. A luscious fruitiness and a classic ‘exotic’ whisky style further highlighted by the triple distillation. Mouth: same comments. Melons, bananas, mirabelles, then more tropical fruits like mango, guava and passion fruit. Pink grapefruit. Behind the fruits I find vanilla biscuits and cake, with hints of butterscotch and honey. A lightly earthy note in the background, as well as something that holds the middle between oaky and herbal. Finish: long, with this earthy and now slightly bitter wood influence becoming more noticeable now, alongside citrus and unripe banana. A tropical fruit bomb that could have been made in Ireland. If you like the old Teeling (Bushmills) casks, be sure to check this out. 90 points - whiskynotes.be
- Foursquare Rum Sixty Six 12 Year Old Family Reserve Rum (700ml)BARBADOS$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 40%
If you're in the market for an easy-going, tasty Bajan style, Rum Sixty Six from the Foursquare Family Reserve will be for you. It was so named because the UK-based members of the Seale family used to smuggle unbranded bottles home to get them through the English winter. The title celebrates the 30th of November 1966 when Barbados became an independent state, adopting the coat of arms bearing the motto "Pride & Industry", a symbol also represented on the label. Described as a true Bajan style with a vibrant, golden colour and warming aromas and flavours of raisins, clove, demerara sugar and vanilla showing a complexity and texture you may not expect at 40% Alc./Vol. Tropically aged in x-Bourbon barrels. Enjoy it on rocks with a slice of lime or in a Dark and Stormy.
Other reviews... 4.5 Stars - diffordsguide.com
Other reviews... "The aroma has a pleasant roasted meat quality that couples nicely with the brown sugar. Smoke from the barrels comes to light as does baking spices. The rum is rich and soft initially with a sweet note, but that becomes bitter with hints of whiskey on the finish. A fine rum to sip if you are in the mood for bitter rather than sweet." 86 points - distiller.com

Mint, which is to be found in its wild state in many parts of the world, has been grown domestically since ancient Egyptian times. The Japanese have known ‘Menthol” for at least two thousand years. It is one of the most respected medicinal plants – as a tonic, stimulant and antispasmodic. It also has strong aromatic properties and last but not least, freshens the mouth. The digestive properties of some types of mint have also long been known and the most widely used species in liqueurs is Labiatae which belongs to the garden mint family. This aromatic and refreshing version from the famous Massenez company in Alsace sports a spectacular deep emerald colour and weighs in at 20% Alc./Vol.

Jean Luc Pasquet Tresors de Famille L.68/72 Le Cognac d'Andre Single Estate Fins Bois Cognac (500ml)Cognac, FRANCE$340. 00Bottle$4080.00 DozenABV: 54.3%45 year old, cask strength cognac selling for a song. "...just magnificent. This is getting higher, as Jim Morrison would have said." - whiskyfun.com
This 100% Ugni Blanc expression comes from the vineyard of André Porchet, located in Asnières-la-Giraud in the Fins Bois region. Cognacs from the years 1968 to 1972 were blended together during the 1980's by André Porchet and then aged in different barrels for approximately 40 years, meaning the youngest cognac in the blend is at least 45 years old. Despite the high ABV, it's extremely well-balanced. Expect notes of passion fruits, flambée banana, spices, honey and plum jam. More about the provenance of this cask from Pasquet himself, below:
"André L68/72 is the result of the work of André Porchet representing the 6th generation of his family. Gaëlle, André's youngest daughter, has allowed us to select this very special cognac from Fins Bois in the commune of Asnières la Giraud. I met Gaëlle at the Lycée Agricole de l'Oisellerie, near Angoulême, where we were both students in the BTS VITIOENO. At the end of our studies, we lost sight of each other for several years to finally meet again thanks to our common friendships in Charente. Gaelle and her brother Yann, 7th generation, took over the 40 ha of vineyards of the family business. Gaelle now shares her life between her native Fins Bois and Bordeaux, where the father of her children is a talented oenologist. The Porchets cultivate their vines with as much passion as discretion. The adage "to live happily, let's live hidden" could be their motto. André is a reserved man of few words. He defines himself as a link in a long chain of winegrowers. With his wife Mireille, an adopted Charentaise of Breton origin, they have worked together, despite the wine crises, to make their family vineyard prosper. From their 10 hectares of vines in 1975, they were able to pass on some 40 hectares to their children. Without discontinuity, this family has cultivated the vineyard since...1680! Even during the catastrophic phylloxera years, there was no interruption in production. André wants to pass on and guard a family tradition that goes back several hundred years. The Porchets have a real knowledge of wine making and an authentic mastery of distillation. Until 1974, the distillery used a 10hl wood/coal still. Since then, gas has replaced coal and today, with two additional 25 Hl stills, the family distills their entire production. This lot 68/72 is the witness of André's first years in the vineyard. We were immediately seduced by this very atypical cognac which is perfectly drinkable at a high degree, a singularity in the cognac world. The Porchets have a real signature. Gaëlle likes to say that "it smells like home", as if the scent of this beautiful eau de vie will always bring her back to this place, wherever she is. The blend of the different vintages was composed in the 80's and has not been modified to this day. From this lot 68/72 we have drawn 738 bottles on September 07, 2022."
Other reviews... André's 1973 had been just flabbergasting three years ago (WF 92). It stems from the village of Asnières-la-Giraud, north of Saintes. Colour: full gold. Nose: it is tighter, more austere, more elegant as well, more on cakes at first, but it would then get more aromatic, with pears poached in Yquem (right, in a small Sauternes), a little muscat, sweet flowers, gardenia, clematis, honeysuckle, daphne… And then even roses. It's incredible how floral this one is. With water: I think I'll have to mention panettones again. It's not an obsession, it's just that I find a good panettone brings together the fragrances and flavours of a fine aged spirit. It's one of life's miracles (hmm…) Mouth (neat): marvelous, first with a touch of varnish. Then peaches of course, raisins naturally, flower jellies and hay, soft liquorice, vine peaches, apricots, crème brulée… I find it amazingly 'full', very classic. With water: just very classic indeed, not need to try to further dissect it. Finish: rather long, with more citrus and honeys, with some very nice tension throughout. Oranges in majesty in the aftertaste. Comments: actually, there's nothing particularly special about it; it's just magnificent. This is getting higher, as Jim Morrison would have said. 91 points - whiskyfun.com
Notes from the producers... Le Cognac d’André is a complex cognac, full of layers of aromas and flavors. Peach, cherry blossom, and earthier tones of leather and walnuts make up the bouquet. A suave and dense palate, blending notes of grape, fig, peach, cherry, almond paste with a spicy (white pepper and ginger) finish.

2020 Domaine de la Vougeraie Musigny Grand CruBurgundy, FRANCE$1999. 00Bottle$23988.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
This is actually surprisingly similar to the Bonnes Mares if perhaps a bit more elegant. The ultra-refined and gorgeously textured equally sized flavors flash a plenitude of minerality and focused power on the strikingly long and impeccably well-balanced finale. This is also outstanding with equally good development potential. Wonderful. Drink through 2038+.
93-96 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Musigny Grand Cru is 100% whole bunch as usual. This has a very complete and delineated bouquet with mineral-rich red berry fruit, touches of pressed rose petal emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, moderate depth, quite "linear’ for a Musigny with a very sapid finish. Not bad, although I feel this is slightly dictated by the stem addition at the moment. I would be intrigued to revisit this after bottling because it is difficult seeing which way this is going to head. Drink 2028-2050.
93+ points
Neal Martin - VinousTwo and a half barrels, one new, with 100% whole bunches. Both these elements show a little in the very youthful wine. Otherwise the nose is discretion itself, before the fruit explodes in magical fashion at the start of the palate. Yet is there quite the weight and persistence of a truly great wine? There is the right acidity and a fine sense of balance, but the wine stops short of the full majesty of a truly great Musigny this year.

2020 Domaine Comte Armand Pommard Clos des Epeneaux Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$440. 00Bottle$5280.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkDomaine Comte Armand is one of the most respected names in Burgundy, with a rich history deeply rooted in the village of Pommard. At the heart of their holdings is the legendary Pommard Premier Cru Clos des Epeneaux, a walled monopole vineyard that has become synonymous with the domaine itself.
What sets Clos des Epeneaux apart is its remarkable ability to balance Pommard's natural power with a sense of elegance and finesse. The vineyard's old vines, some over 80 years of age, yield wines of depth and complexity, yet with a vibrancy that makes them captivating even in their youth. With age, these wines evolve beautifully, revealing layers of dark fruit, earth, and subtle spice.
Other Reviews....
Discreet but not invisible wood influence can be found on the ripe aromas of various dark berries, prominent earth and violet scents. Somewhat surprisingly in the context of the reported yields, the mid-palate is not especially dense though I very much like the beguiling texture that is at once caressing yet powerful before culminating in a precise, serious and equally austere if notably longer finale. This is an opulent and refined Clos des Epeneaux. Drink through 2030+.
91-94 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru was a blend of two instead of four cuvées this year due to the depleted production. It has a precocious bouquet with black cherries, raspberry, menthol and blood orange scents that gather momentum in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, taut and fresh, lightly spiced with hints of allspice and tangy quince. It displays fine composure towards the finish with impressive length. This is a superb Clos des Epeneaux, though will it surpass the 2019? I’m not sure. Drink 2026-2050.
92-94 points
Neal Martin - VinousI tasted first the cuvée from young vines, which did get rather overtaken by the summer conditions, and then the old vines which showed as a brighter wine, in sharper definition. What matters, of course, is the blend. This shows as having a deep dense purple colour, while the bouquet is almost stunned into submission by the power of the wine. There is a huge wealth of dark fruit, as black as it is red. Supercharged on the palate but finishes with a little crunch as good acidity plays alongside the tannins. The Clos des Epeneaux 2020 is still an atypically massive wine but this could well emerge as a quality player with time.
90-94 points
Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyThe final blend of this is superb, including both the energy of the young vines and the density of the old. They deliver a lush, spicy fruit with a strong mineral underpinning, a dense texture, firm but supple tannins and an infinitely rewarding finish. The Clos des Epeneaux is produced from a monopole of 5.23ha located at the juncture of Grands Epenots (20%) and Petits Epenots (80%). The clos is divided by regisseur Paul Zinetti into four main subdivisions by age of vine and underlying soils which are farmed and vinified separately. Drink 2025 - 2050.

2020 Delas Hermitage Les BessardsHermitage, Northern Rhone, FRANCE$350. 00Bottle$4200.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
Looking terrific out of barrel, the 2020 Hermitage Les Bessards boasts classic aromas of crushed stone, black cherries and cassis on the nose. It's full-bodied, perhaps a touch warm, but with wonderfully silky, rich tannins and a long, licorice-tinged finish. It should drink well for close to two decades. Drink: 2025-2040.
95-97 points
Joe Czerwinski - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)Inky violet. Displays assertive aromas of blackcurrant, cherry-cola and violet, along with olive, smoked meat and vanilla nuances that gain strength with aeration. Vibrant, focused and ppealingly sweet, offering intense, mineraldriven black and blue fruit, floral pastille and smoky bacon flavors that become deeper and spicier as the wine opens up. The floral note comes back strong on the impressively long, penetrating finish, which features youthfully chewy tannins and exotic spice notes.
97-98 points
Josh Raynolds - VinousAll Syrah from unquestionably one of the greatest terroirs on the planet for the variety, the dense purple-hued 2020 Hermitage Les Bessards offers up a monster of a bouquet of primordial blue fruits, camphor, burning embers, and scorched earth. This carries to a powerful yet incredibly pure Hermitage with building tannins, bright acidity, stunning mid-palate depth, and a great finish. It's going to push the upper boundary of my rating scale, but it's for consumers with plenty of patience and will be mostly only educational for the first decade of life or so.
97-99 points
Jeb DunnuckFull-bodied, fine and tightly wound, but with a good sense of harmony and typicity. Stretching skywards, this is a tense, saline style but with sufficient fat around the bones to make for a long-lasting wine. You can really feel the granite. Situated above L'Ermite and just east of the chapel at the peak of the Hermitage hillside at around 325m altitude, this south-facing plot forms an amphitheatre of semicircular vine terraces planted to Syrah.
Other Reviews....
Looking a bit more supple and red fruited than the Les Bessards, the 2020 Hermitage Ligne de Crete Les Grandes Vignes (tasted from two barrels) features hints of crushed stone and bright raspberries. Full-bodied and supple, it finishes long and silky textured. It should be drinkable soon after release and continue to drink well for more than a decade. Drink: 2023-2035.

Finishes chewy, sharply focused and extremely long, with solid tannins adding shape and final grip.
97-98 points
Josh Raynolds - VinousThe 2020 Hermitage Ligne De Crête comes all from the Les Grands Vignes lieu-dit, at the very top of Hermitage Hill, and is aged for 20 months in fine-grain barrels. It's another inky hued Hermitage yet has a more rounded, supple style compared to the Les Bessards, with gorgeous cassis and black raspberry fruits, notes of crushed stone, bacon fat, new leather, and flowery incense, full-bodied richness, velvety tannins, and a great finish. This seamless, sexy, incredibly floral Hermitage will be drinkable with just 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for 20-30 years.

The Delas parcel of this fabled vineyard is under one hectare in size, reliably yielding 22–28 hectoliters each vintage. The 2020 Cote Rotie La Landonne offers forward raspberry and herb notes underscored by hints of roasted meat. Medium to full-bodied, it's silky and long on the finish. This is also aromatically quite floral in character with its blend of purple fruit, earth and anise wisps. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the delineated and powerful larger-bodied flavors where the supporting tannins are dense but fine on the balanced and youthfully austere finale. This is the proper new Balvenie 25, not one of those doublewoods or single barrels, you understand? Colour: gold. Nose: fully Balvenie. Touch of nail polish at first, then mirabelles and quinces, then croissant and brioche, then custard and acacia honey. That's all folks, and that was very much already. Mouth: absolutely splendid, perhaps a tad rougher than earlier vintages (the glorious 1970s) but indeed full of plums, yellow ones, green ones… Quinces are there too, sugarcane as well, tiny notes of Victoria pineapple, then just vanilla and the best part of oak. It is not a very complicated malt whisky, it's even a tad simple, but I find it epitomically Balvenie, which is enough for me. I must be on my lucky day. Finish: lovely finish, creamy, ueber-Balvenie-ish, on preserved mirabelles with just a dash of sawdust. Vanilla and barley syrup in the aftertaste. Comments: close to the core. My main problem is that I cannot not remember the early 1970s Balvenies – and the ones before. Balvenie 'As we get it' anyone? Maybe I need some kind of reset. 88 points - whiskyfun.com

"The Masterpieces in Eight Colours” is a series of eight batches of Karuizawa presented in different traditional Japanese colours. The fourth in the series was matured in a Sherry Butt, bottled at 48.5% without chill filtration and packaged in blue. Kanji writing on the label is by calligrapher, Souun Takeda, one of the most famous Kanji artists in Japan. His artwork is highly praised for its innovative, yet traditional way of expressing the beauty of the Japanese language and spirit. Normally these very rare Karuizawas are sold as full sets of eight making the cost prohibitive for most collectors. At the time of writing, we have four of the series on offer which can be purchased separately. One only.

2021 Te Mata Estate ColeraineHawkes Bay, NEW ZEALAND$150. 00Bottle$1800.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: CorkDubbed as "New Zealand’s greatest winery" by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and "New Zealand's first growth" by Decanter (amongst many other superlatives), Te Mata is a family-owned Estate in Hawke's Bay, on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island. Established in 1896 on a former pastoral land-holding, the Estate has been producing classic wines modelled on Bordeaux varieties and blends with a modern interpretation.
Coleraine is an assemblage of the finest wines from distinct plots within Te Mata Estate’s oldest vineyards on the Havelock Hills. Each parcel of grapes was destemmed before a warm-plunged fermentation and extended maceration on skins. The resulting wines were then matured in predominantly new French oak barrels for 17 months. The final blend is 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc.Other Reviews....
The 2021 Coleraine is a superstar. It's the best I recall seeing on release in recent years, a total "pleasure-dome" situation. Tea tree, oyster shell, lavender, black tea and tobacco leaf burst from the glass. Seamless, polished tannins grace the palate. There is texturally more silk to the tannins here than the Awatea tasted beside this (another great wine, for what it's worth). There are notes of creamy red fruits, cassis and bramble, Asian five spice, black cherry and graphite/mineral skein. The persistence of flavor here is extraordinary; it's detailed and nuanced but insistent in the mouth. The tannins cup the fruit in the mouth. Winemaker Phil Brodie said there are no enzymes or added tannin; it's all from the vineyard. This is a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc. 2021 was left in barrel a little longer than the 2020 to refine the tannins. Drink 2023 - 2043.

Erin Larkin - Wine Advocate (Sep 22, 2023)56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc. Because I care, I just nipped down to the cellar to open a bottle of the 2020 Coleraine to compare and contrast with the 2021. The 2020 is packed with tannin, texture, earthiness, and power, while the 2021 is brighter, a bit more frisky in acidity, with more leafy perfume. A little more flamboyant, but equal. It’s not a competition, more of a love in. The 2021 may well be the ‘better’ wine in time, though it’s kind of hard to tell, and may just come down to personal preference. Release date for this in Australia is February 2023.
Dark and intense, lots of perfume, red and black fruits, tobacco, a leafy pop that’s pure varietal class, creamy oak, lead pencils, aniseed and spice. Medium to full-bodied, a flood of flavour, super ‘mineral’ feel to the acidity, tannin is superb, and the finish is so long. Light but so dense. There’s a fresh raspberry juiciness here too, and an extra dimension of tension and energy. All the graphite and presence. Incredible wine. Drink: 2026 - 2045+.

Gary Walsh - The Wine Front (December 2022)Redcurrant and creme de cassis aromas. Roses. So aromatic. Stones. Oyster and mussel shell. Ink pot. Lead pencil shavings. Full-bodied but very tight and focused. Linear and long with fine, powdery and chewy tannins. Crushed velvet texture. 56% cabernet sauvignon, 32% merlot, and 12% cabernet franc. More franc than normal in the blend. Terrific length. Try after 2028.

James SucklingThe 2021 Coleraine exhibits a commanding presence and majestic poise. The bouquet reveals classic aromas of cassis, dark plum and violet with whispering nuances of cedar and cigar. There are hints of warm spices, compounding the pleasure upon inhalation. The palate is bold and graceful at once, enhanced by plush texture and multi-layered mouthfeel, beautifully framed by refreshing acidity and fine chalky tannins. Robust and substantial with a great line and length, which seem to go on to infinity. This youthful wine is already impossible to resist, but time will reward those who can wait. In sports, they often talk about ‘The Greatest of All Time’, or ‘The GOAT’.

2017 Il Carpino Ribolla GiallaFriuli-Venezia, ITALY$110. 00Bottle$1320.00 DozenCellar: Drink now - 1 Years (2023-2024)ABV: 13%Closure: Diam CorkFriuli is situated high up in the north of Italy along the border with Slovenia, and is one of the most exciting and adventurous regions for wine production. ‘Vini macerati di Friuli’, the macerated wines of Friuli, are made using extended contact on skins which are essentially white wines made like red wine. This ancient process was made new again and brought back into vogue in the late 90s by Josko Gravner (and others) who began searching for ways to make wines of the region more individual. Many of the local varieties such as Ribolla Gialla respond extremely well to extended skin contact, unleashing layers of texture and phenolic richness, along with their signature amber/orange colour.
Il Carpino sits on Friuli Venezia-Giulia’s winemaking ‘Golden Strip’ alongside their closest neighbours, Gravner and Radikon. Today they farm 40 acres of vineyards planted on calcareous sandstone-rich soil famous in the region for fine wine production. Il Carpino are located at a higher altitude than most in the region, and their wines embody the energy and fragrance this positioning grants them. Their flagship wine is their Ribolla Gialla which spends 60 days on skins before being racked off into large Slavonian botti for 2 years, with an additional 2 years in bottle before it hits the market.
Bright straw colour with amber tinged edges and a watery hue. Lifted spicy ripe pear, dried apple and honeycomb like notes are trailed by notions of quince and almond. Texturally full the palate features a mix of ripe pear, blood orange and honeycomb flavours which overlay a spicy almond back drop. Finishes very dry with tangy acidity and a well rounded, lingering spicy almond aftertaste.

Alc. 13% - Kilchoman Casado 2022 Release Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLAND$159. 99Bottle$1919.88 DozenABV: 46%
'Casado' meaning marriage in Portuguese is another in a growing line of limited-editions and quasi-experimental bottlings from Kilchoman. Matured in fresh bourbon barrels for six years before 38 casks were selected and married together for an additional two years in two 6,000 litre Portuguese red wine vats. Expect lots of winey fruits and peppery-Islay smoke in this one. Just under 13,000 bottles are on offer. 46% alc./vol. Non chill-filtered.
Notes from the producers... Aromas of intense campfire smoke, ripe plums, cherries, peaches, marzipan and sea spray fill the nose, complemented by notes of black pepper, salty peat smoke, apricot, lemon, stewed plums, apricot jam and rich smoke throughout the palate and lingering in the finish.

Stauning El Clasico Danish Rye Whisky (700ml)DENMARK$144. 99Bottle$1739.88 DozenABV: 46.3%Described as "a Nordic whisky demon with Iberian blood flowing through its veins", Stauning's El Clasico Rye sees additional time in x-vermouth casks. The unusual nose presents muted prune and dried peel aromas with burgeoning rye richness; Harder to pin down on the palate, falling somewhere close to a drier style malted rye, then slightly nondescript through the middle stages before developing cinnamon, bitter peel and herbal definition as the vermouth rallies. Ends warming, dry and palate cleansing. Obvious Manhattan potential - which is no doubt what the creators had in mind. 46.3% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... This vermouth-finished rye whisky is intriguing, complex, and distinctive, with aromas of deep pepper-spice notes of clove and ginger, baked orange peel, stewed fruits, and a gratifying tang of bitter fruit skins and herbal stalks. Mouth-drawing fruitiness with cherry-flavored gummy bears, sweet chalky candies, strawberry taffy, and a piercing streak of spice followed by cinnamon and the return of bitter herbs. Drink it neat or enliven your Boulevardier game. 89 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Stauning KAOS Triple Malt Danish Whisky (700ml)DENMARK$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 46%Curiously named after a 1930s Danish political slogan, Kaos is a combination of Stauning's unpeated malt, smoked malt and malted rye whiskies. The aromas are sweetish with suggestions of poached fruits and dark rye over a rich coffee-chocolate-malt background. A full bodied, chewy delivery conjures flavours of dried fruits, toasty rye bread and cocoa followed by fresh oak shavings and wood spices - you might also detect some faint wood smoke in the aftertaste. A bit of everything going on here, with the toast and chocolate keynotes recalling Glenmorangie Signet. 46% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Give it time to open up and reveal its full beauty: coffee bean, plain chocolate chunks, a warming twist of sweet peat smoke, wood spices, apple, and fresh breakfast pastries. Green apple flavors, rocked by a pandemonium of spices, dissipate to sugary caramel, vanilla, chocolate, and malt permeated by mellow smoke. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com
...The thing about Kaos, is that you never quite know - as the name implies - what you are going to get. Sometimes it works magnificently. Other times it stumbles over itself. 86 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2023
...With such a name, this baby couldn't not have piqued my curiosity. This little chaotic whisky is a self-blend of Stauning's rye with their peated malt and was aged in first fill bourbon and virgin American oak. Aye, we're ready… Colour: light gold. Nose: a lot of fun, with smoked mangos, litres of chamomile tea, eucalyptus, cough syrup, rye bread, a saucerful of muesli (not secrets), then rather liquorice and even a little tar. No dissonances this far, we're good. Very moderate vanillaness, we're even better. Mouth: very good, pretty bombastic, with huge fruits (melons, apricots, mangos) and this bready smoke that's not seen everywhere. Touches of juniper and caraway, a little nutmeg, then fruit breads and even a little sourdough bread. We call that süweck here in Alsace. Finish: rather long and more on liquorice. Lightly salted liquorice. Comments: a joyful whisky that's both very excellent, innovative (for once, when some whiskymakers innovate they do not have exactly the same innovations as everybody else), and just fun. Recommended if the price is right. No we don't check prices. 85 points - whiskyfun.com

The 2021er Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett is a barely fruity-styled wine with a bright white-yellow color and a stunningly pure nose of white peach, citrusy fruits, white flowers, smoke, and a subtle dash of whipped cream. The wine proves stunningly vibrant on the almost off-dry tasting palate and leaves great notes of fresh herbs and spices in the long finish. The aftertaste is to die for as it proves airy, elegant, precise, and incredibly persistent. What a great success! The only downside is that one will need to be a bit patient and give the wine a few years in the bottle in order to allow it to integrate the touch of tartness currently floating around. Drink 2029-2041.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 21, 2022)The 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a very delineated, quite floral bouquet with rose petal infusing the mixture of red and black fruit. Neal Martin - VinousPale lemon colour, a little waxiness, a touch of oak, not so many stones. Then a quiet patch, then the real wine comes out behind with a little lime juice. It is a bit disjointed at this stage in its elevage. This normally turns into a first rate wine, but it is not showing its full potential on today’s form.

2020 Domaine Faiveley Batard Montrachet Grand CruBurgundy, FRANCE$1099. 00Bottle$13188.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkDomaine Faiveley was founded in 1825, and while they have been known for producing outstanding quality wines throughout this time, they are widely considered one of the most improved domaines in Burgundy over the last decade. Since taking over from his father Francois, Erwan Faiveley has made a deliberate decision to emphasise freshness and purity of fruit rather than fruit extraction, and at times, excessive use of new oak. This change has resulted in wines with greater refinement and vineyard character expression.
Other Reviews....
Here the equally layered nose is a bit more expressive with its aromas of white orchard fruit, abundant citrus and discreet wood influence. The slightly bigger flavors also possess an exceptionally refined, sleek and encompassing texture while displaying focused power on the complex, sappy and balanced finish that really fans out as it sits on the palate. At present, this isn't quite as complex as the BBM though it may catch it in time. Drink through 2028+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru unfurls in the glass with aromas of ripe orchard fruit, hazelnuts, freshly baked bread, baking spices and buttered toast. Full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's generous and giving, with lively acids and plenty of mid-palate weight. As I've written before about this cuvée, if it can pick up some additional tension during a second winter on the lees, my score will seem conservative.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 21, 2022)The 2020 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a very well-defined, quite mineral-driven bouquet with touches of white chocolate and even a hint of marron glacées percolating through the citrus fruit. The palate is extremely well balanced, but tight and focused, good depth, quite creamy towards the finish. Very difficult not to swallow this now, but it will age very well in bottle. Excellent. Drink 2025-2045.

Neal Martin - VinousBright clean pale yellow. Immediately there is more weight of fruit compared to the Faiveley 2020 Bienvenues-Bâtard, more power in a good way here. The class absolutely explodes on the palate, white fruit with just a little additional ripeness, all the weight in the world but disciplined. Very long indeed.

Here too the nose is cool and restrained with a discreet application of wood framing the layered aromas of honeysuckle, white peach and a variety of floral nuances. The refined and beautifully textured medium-bodied flavors possess excellent mid-palate concentration before terminating in a persistent, balanced and dry finale. This is also understated and lovely with the balance and material to reward at least a decade of aging. Drink through 2030+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundAromas of hazelnuts, pear, confit citrus, honeycomb, toasted almonds and fresh bread introduce the 2020 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, a full-bodied, rich and muscular wine that's layered and concentrated, girdled by bright acids and concluding with a long, saline finish.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 21, 2022)The 2020 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a very well-defined bouquet with yellow flowers and mirabelle, dried pineapple, lemon thyme and a touch of almond. The palate is well balanced, quite intense with the power offset by the acidity, very critic with a tang of bitter lemon. The new oak slightly occludes the finish but that will be subsumed with time. Good potential, but chuck it in a cellar for 4-7 years. Drink 2026-2046.

Neal Martin - VinousPale lemon colour, this also is quite discreet though there’s a bit more to it. Lovely racy backbone to this with energy and length. Medium bodied for a grand cru but definitely has the finesse we look for in Bienvenues.

Elijah Craig Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey (700ml)Kentucky, UNITED STATES$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 47%Number 7 in Whisky Advocate's Top 20 for 2020.
Launched by Heaven Hill in the USA in early 2020, Elijah Craig Rye is made with a traditional mash bill of 51% rye, 35% corn and 14% malted barley. It's the same 'barely legal' recipe they use for whiskeys like Pikesville and Rittenhouse Rye, so called because it contains the bare minimum amount of rye required by law. Because the dominant secondary grain is corn, the flavour profile is reported to be quite similar to what might be expected from a Bourbon - which hooks into rye's popular resurgence. Hardcore Bourbon drinkers are being won over by whiskeys like this. Extra-aging remains a tenet of the Elijah Craig portfolio, and this is no exception. Expect a spicy sharpness from the rye balanced by sweetness from the corn. Llike the rest of the range, it comes packaged in the brand's iconic bottle shape. 47% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Elijah Craig always impresses with value, but until now has been confined to bourbon. This foray into rye whiskey sticks close to Elijah Craig's bourbon roots by using only the minimum-required 51% rye in its formulation; however, it does achieve a nice departure in flavor. Aromas include butterscotch, caramel-nut clusters, and peppery spice. The spice ramps up on the palate, carried forward by the full body, hearty proof, and mouth-coating texture, as cherry cola, baking chocolate, and darker fruits emerge. Priced a notch below comparable peers, this rye delivers powerful flavors that feel excitingly untamed, and will impress bourbon and rye lovers alike. 94 points - whiskyadvocate.com
...Superbly made. And as relaxed yet beautifully busy as ol' Earl Scruggs on his banjo. And just as note perfect. 94.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible.
...Elijah Craig Rye's combination of a flavor profile with mass appeal, great price, and recognizable branding makes it a contender for becoming one of the most popular ryes on the market. Many people are already familiar with the Elijah Craig brand, so it makes perfect sense that Heaven Hill would introduce a rye to sit beside its popular Small Batch Bourbon counterpart. Put simply, Elijah Craig Rye is light and approachable, but it also lacks complexity and oak influence which I think will make it come across as somewhat boring to seasoned rye drinkers. While it may not wow anyone with its mild intensity of flavors, its approachability, recognizable branding, and ultimately its price point, will serve it well. - breakingbourbon.com

Old Pulteney 16 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$179. 99Bottle$2159.88 DozenABV: 46%Reportedly one of the better Pulteneys of recent times, with some tasters describing it as a new favourite that's as good as - or even better - than the long lost 17 year old. Having been aged in both x-Bourbon barrels and Oloroso sherry-seasoned Spanish oak casks, you can expect a nicely balanced, slightly sweet, fruity Highlander with a little Christmas cake richness. The colour is spectacular! Normally exclusive to Travel Retail, there are no guarantees we'll be able to source this again. 46% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... There, a proper strength and some high hopes. Colour: gold. Nose: wait, this is something else. Green cigars, as they have in Indonesia, patchouli and mothballs, mushrooms and mosses, lamp oil and bone marrow, tincture of iodine and creosote, watermelon skin, fumes, plaster, sorrel… It’s pretty unconventional and full of character, I have to say I’m really fond of this unusual nose. Forgot to mention a little mustard and manzanilla. I agree, even better news. Mouth: seriously? Caraway and aniseed upfront? Then maize flour and miso? There is a fermentary side to this one, some sake-like notes, not really easy to enjoy, but there’s also a citrusy-hoppy development that just works. The good news is that it’s the latter that wins it. A funny, rather cinematic dram. Finish: long, greener, spicier. Bitterer herbs, leaves, peppers… Comments: good fun to be had with this one, it’s just that its rather a fighter and that you’ll need a few months to empty a bottle. Unless it’s the only bottle you own, naturally. Now I like it that they would go towards character and individuality, and not towards… stupid vanilla. Very good, Inver House. 87 points - whiskyfun.com

2019 Ridge Vineyards Estate Cabernet SauvignonCalifornia, UNITED STATES$190. 00Bottle$2280.00 DozenClosure: CorkOther Reviews....
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate offers a hugely appealing mix of fruit richness married to the savory, structured style that is the Ridge signature. The 2019 is beautifully exotic, but natural without the volume of the Monte Bello. I imagine it will drink splendidly with minimal cellaring. Succulent red cherry, blood orange, mint, cinnamon and pomegranate. Drink: 2025-2039.

James SucklingThe 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate comes from the estate Monte Bello Vineyard on the eastern side of the Santa Cruz Mountains and is 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot. Hitting 13.8% alcohol, its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a brilliant perfume of blue fruits, scorched earth, tobacco leaf, and lead pencil. Beautifully balanced and medium to full-bodied, with building tannins, it's a seamless Cabernet Sauvignon that has some up-front appeal given its balance and elegance yet will benefit from 2-5 years of bottle age and, I suspect, have 20+ years of overall longevity. Drink: 2024-2047.

Other reviews... “Nose: less sweet than the other cask, more narrow as well. There are some dry wood shavings and leather. Spiced notes and a hint of polished metal. Again there is a whisky-like side. Mouth: meh. This seems narrow, rather woody and spirity. I’m getting a lighter style of spirit, overtaken by some alcohol burn, oak spice and liquorice. Cloves and mentholated freshness. Finish: long and drying, on oak spice. Some heat and pepper.” - whiskynotes.be
