The Singleton of Glendullan The Silken Gown 14 Year Old (Special Release 2023) Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    Reduced from $159.99
    $99. 99

    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 55%

Diageo launched the Singleton label in 2006 to rival the likes of Glenlivet and Glenfiddich. It went on to become the world’s number one selling single malt brand, now with a triune of labels (the others being Glen Ord and Dufftown). A typically a soft and creamy whiskey – hence this year’s title - here you also get to experience Glendullan at full cask strength, with part of the maturation in French oak casks that previously contained White Burgundy (Chardonnay). Tasting from a 20ml sample yielded notes of digestif biscuits, delicate orchard fruit juiciness and drying oak - a simple yet effective combination that equates to a broad appeal sipper. 55% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Green apple flesh and light honey on the nose, but it’s mild and delicate and takes time to open up, adding gentle floral notes, Bartlett pear, and white pepper. Caramel apple slices, pepper, white chocolate, grapefruit, white grape, and hints of dried banana and caramel chocolate round out a smooth tasting experience, but this one is at its best with a little water. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Brilliant water like core with greenish toned edges. Intense lime and lemon scents jump out of the glass trailed by some green apple, subtle oily toast like notes and wet steel. Crunchy lime and lemon fruits are tightly coiled by a laser beam of steely mineral infused acidity. Granny Smith apple, delicate kerosene and wet steel characters ensue. Taut and linear in its feel it shows great precision and finishes dry, long and steely.

From a Clare vineyard in the Polish Hill River sub-region, owned by a couple of Adelaide heart surgeons, the guys only make this wine in top vintages. 2022 is most certainly that. This is stunning stuff. A limpid lemon, the nose is all citrus – lemons and limes. Think a handful of fresh kaffir lime leaves. This is backed by spices and wet river stones. Finely balanced, squeaky clean, fresh and with amazing length, this is a brilliant Riesling. Fine, vibrant acidity helps drive the wine. It also has such incredible length and yet the intensity of flavour is maintained for the full journey. Wonderful. This will sail through the next 15 to 20 years in good cellars. Drink 2023-2043.

A never-fail rendition of pinot gris although quite a tight, restrained style this vintage. Plenty of poached, candied and fresh pears all spiced up with ginger and cinnamon. A fine layer of lees adding to some palate weight and a light phenolic pull on the finish. Savoury, moreish and refreshing. Lovely drinking here. Drink by 2027.

    $779.88 Dozen
    ABV: 29%

Colombia's national drink, Aguardiente is made from just four ingredients: alcohol, anise and water, and sometimes sugar, but most of the Aguardiente sold nowadays is sugar free. In fact, some would say the only significant differentiator between the various brands is the amount of sugar employed. Antioqueno 'Real' is the new edition of Aguardiente Real 1493 and comes with no added sugar. Its delicate aniseed aroma is enhanced by vanilla from the American oak barrels in which it's matured. Soft in the mouth, it's a light bodied and gently warming spirit that's endlessly mixable. 29% Alc./Vol.

Sortilege is a brand best known for its honey and maple-influenced whisky liqueurs, derived from a recipe developed by Quebec’s first settlers. At the time, the settlers would flavour their eau-de-vie with maple syrup. They soon began using it directly during the distillation process, and thus, maple whisky was born. Sortilege have now branched out into whisky, starting with this judicious blend of 5 and 7-year-old batches. In line with other sourced Canadian ryes, it should be soft and just a little sweet. 43% Alc./Vol.

    2022 Te Mata Estate Coleraine
    Hawkes Bay, NEW ZEALAND
    $150. 00
    Bottle
    $1800.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: Cork

Dubbed as "New Zealand's greatest winery" by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and "New Zealand's first growth" by Decanter (amongst many other superlatives), Te Mata is a family-owned Estate in Hawke's Bay, on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island. Established in 1896 on a former pastoral land-holding, the Estate has been producing classic wines modelled on Bordeaux varieties and blends with a modern interpretation.

Coleraine is an assemblage of the finest wines from distinct plots within Te Mata Estate’s oldest vineyards on the Havelock Hills. Each parcel of grapes was destemmed before a warm-plunged fermentation and extended maceration on skins. The resulting wines were then matured in predominantly new French oak barrels for 17 months. The final blend of this 2022 includes a higher than usual 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the balance 13% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc.

    Other Reviews....
A very elegant young Coleraine with lovely aromas of oyster shell, lead pencil, sweet tobacco, black currant and moss. Very perfumed and expressive. Medium-bodied with fine tannins that are polished and energetic with some citrusy acidity underneath. Some dust to the texture. This is the second highest blend of cabernet sauvignon in the history of Coleraine with 84% cabernet sauvignon, 13% merlot and the rest cabernet franc. March release. Best after 2027 and beyond.

The 2022 Coleraine is laden at this stage with the outrageous attractiveness of youth. I mean, it's irresistible. There's raspberry, nori, rose petals, coffee grounds, star anise, salted licorice, sun-dried kelp/nori, warm pine (I know this smell because I was hiking around the Te Mata peak yesterday, and there was a fallen pine tree lying in the sun, and it smelled great) and layers of peppercorns. In the mouth, the wine is so fresh, so alive, with so much energy, but it already is showing the svelte line of this house, this place. With a hint of raw cocoa laced through the finish, I'm sad to push this glass away. It will be the last time that I taste it for a while. A ripper. Excellent. This is composed of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc. Drink: 2023-2057.

Erin Larkin - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Dec 15, 2023)

Speaking with winemaker Phil Brodie, he tells me that it was an interesting year, with some rain events in spring, then the highest number of days above 30c in summer experienced to date, a little rain during the early part of vintage, with the second half of vintage drying out. Very small berries in 2022, with crops about 40% down on average.
I tasted this over two days, and gee, it really moved about. Started off with a pop of fragrance and more rugged tannin, then it eased itself back into a more typical Coleraine profile, though for sure it’s a different style in some respects with its unusually high Cabernet Sauvignon component of 84%, the remainder being 13% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Release date is around Feb 2024.
Black fruit, some red, pencil lead, a little aniseed and floral perfume, nori, baking spice, pimento, slight vanilla. Medium-bodied, a fair bit of chew, dark fruit and dark chocolate, porcini mushroom umami, grainy tannin, concentrated and chewy, earthy and ferrous, with a bright line of very ‘mineral’ acidity on a long finish. Excellent, albeit a more Cabernet focussed expression of Coleraine, which marks it out as being different, and on that point such a worthy of addition to the cellar, though of course the wine is outstanding irrespective of that. Totally opaque midnight black in colour with a dark red hue. Black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry aromas make a strong showing out of the glass followed by some scorched earth, dried herb and peppered meat notes. Fleshy black raspberry and liquorice fruits carry good richness and medium body weight across the palate with some black cherry, scorched earth and peppered dried meat elements lying underneath. El Jimador Reposado Tequila (700ml)
    Jalisco, MEXICO
    $76. 99
    Bottle
    $923.88 Dozen
    ABV: 38%

Launched in 1994 and named after the men who hand harvest agaves with a razor sharp coa, the Jimador brand is a sister offering to Herradura. The hugely popular Reposado represents 70% of production and is aged for two months in white oak barrels. While it started life as a 100% agave tequila, it was reduced to a mixto during the 1999/2000 agave crisis but in 2009, El Jimador reclaimed its all-agave status. Famously smooth with notes of cooked agave, vanilla and light caramel sweetness, the producers recommend it with grapefruit soda, lime juice and a hint of salt in a highball glass. 38% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Complex aromas of wet earth, vanilla, jalapeño and campfire ash entice the nose. The palate opens with vanilla, transitioning to a peppery midpalate and finishing long, with delicate violet, coconut, black pepper and cinnamon notes. 93 points - wineenthusiast.com

"Notes of cooked agave, light oak and vanilla are joined by a slight hint of baked cherry pie on the nose. On the palate, this medium-bodied tequila coats the tongue with pleasant vanilla and caramel flavors complemented by more fruit notes, especially cherry and strawberry. Light oak and cinnamon notes and a touch of earthiness add to the complex flavor profile. It presents a medium length finish, with alcohol, white pepper and agave appearing initially before a quick hint of agave nectar and cherry finish things off." 92 points - distiller.com

Described as "a ripper of a dram", Cask no. 3063 was created during a period of experimentation at the distillery. The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is a pretty rich, bombastic wine, especially for Mayacamas. A blast of dark fruit, incense, tobacco, licorice, spice and mocha hits the palate. I would give the 2019 at least a few years in bottle to settle down, as it is quite the powerhouse today. This is an unusually flamboyant wine with plenty of richness and a bit less in the way of subtlety. The opulence of the vintage comes through loud and clear. Drink 2027-2041.

Moving to the current releases, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is clearly on another level. Cassis, violets, spring flowers, and graphite, as well as a beautiful sense of minerality, all emerge on the nose, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, fine, polished tannins, fabulous balance, and a great finish. The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is sensual and polished. Bright acids lend energy as this super-finessed Cabernet opens in the glass. Crushed red berry fruit, cedar, rose petal and mint all open with a bit of coaxing. The 2018 is going to need a number of years to be at its very best. It is elegant, nuanced and simply impeccable, but also a bit reticent at this stage. Readers who are familiar with these wines know they need time to come into their own. If that is not possible, I suggest opening it well in advance, even a day or two. Drink 2027-2047.

    Antonio Galloni - Vinous

Taking lots of air to show at its best, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a brilliant, classic, age-worthy wine from this great estate. It certainly shows the more structured, vibrant style of the 2018 vintage with lively acids, yet it has utterly classic Cabernet crème de cassis and almost blue fruits as well as Bordeaux-like notes of lead pencil, cedarwood, tobacco, and assorted floral nuances. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it brings rock-solid intensity, perfectly ripe yet building, firm tannins, and again, the vintage's freshness, purity, and elegance. It reminds me of a top Saint-Julien and classic, old school, structured Cabernet that will reward bottle age. It needs 7-8 years to hit maturity (it's approachable today with a healthy decant), and I have no doubt this will be a 30- to 40-year wine. Drink 2029 - 2060.

Philip Togni’s Cabernet Sauvignon is an instant classic in the phenomenal 2018 vintage. Leading with its characteristic black-toned fruit, dusty graphite, green tobacco, and masterfully integrated cedarwood spices, it turns a surprising corner on the palate, leaning into the freshness of the vintage, with a medium-bodied palate and layers of velvety textured red and black fruits intertwined with cigar box, sagebrush, and dried wildflowers. The de Pury family have been farming in the Yarra Valley since 1863. Once a famed vineyard in the 19th century, the demise of fine table wines saw production cease in 1921. Guill & Katherine de Pury decided to replant the vineyard in 1969, gradually starting to rebuild the reputation of this historic estate. Today it is helmed by Sandra de Pury, becoming the fourth-generation winemaker at Yeringberg, with her brother David who manages the vineyard. Produced from some of the oldest vines in the Yarra Valley, the low-yielding vines result in wines of great age-ability and finesse.

Fruit from vines planted in 1999. Picked over 12 days with three different ferments (destemmed and crushed, whole berry and whole bunches), 12 to 30 days on skins and 19 months in oak hogsheads (30% new). No fining. Bright crimson purple. Aromas of boysenberries, dark raspberries, star anise and a gentle waft of oak-derived cedar. Medium bodied, gently plush and silken, this is already a delight.

Vines planted in 1999. About 6% whole bunch. 30% new oak.
Plum and cherry, cracked pepper, hazelnut, Turkish apricot and musk stick, with a little cedar oak. It’s plum and plummy, a grainy grip to tannin, balanced acidity, nutty with something of a toffee flavour, with a clip of oak on a finish of good length. Still a little elemental, but good. Needs a couple more years of cellaring.

This was ‘hand-picked over 6 distinct days’, which is surely better than six indistinct days. Anyway, I give winemaker Paul Bridgeman 100 points for his choice of guitar and amplifier; namely a Gibson Les Paul paired with a Vox.
Morello cherries from a jar, a little truffle, some exotic spice, hazelnut and Xmas cake. It’s medium-bodied, a little bit squishy in flavour, with some rhubarb and baked berry fruit, but has fairly supple sooty tannin, some black olive and more umami characters, cedar oak in tow, with a gently sappy ripe tomato finish of solid length. Drink 2023-2030.

Exceptionally fragrant the nose offers up a pretty bouquet of violets, strawberries, red raspberries and red liquorice with hints of clove, fresh herbs and spice also evident. A 50/50 blend of Shiraz and Pinot Noir. I can’t tell you the RRP, as it was written on the bottle in white pen, which has rubbed off, so I’ll guess.
This is meaty, spicy and perfumed, blue and black fruit, dried herb with a stony thing happening. The Shiraz component seems to dominate the flavour profile, though there’s some raspberry and cherry from Pinot Noir, or so I think. The tannin is grainy and fine, and the finish is long, offering juiciness with meaty/savoury complexity. Nicely done. Drink 2024-2029+

Certified organic and biodynamic since 1994, their south-facing terraced vineyards are nestled on steep slopes with views of the Pyrenees Mountains. This cuvée was crafted to be a lighter wine, ready to enjoy just one year after harvest. The Petit Manseng grapes come from specific terrace parcels, offering a fresher and less ripe profile to the richness of the Gros Manseng.

Cherry, exotic spice, earth, liquorice richness. It’s fleshy and juicy, a lot of dark cherry and chocolate, with something of a pickled walnut edge, pleasing sooty tannin grip, with a gamey, sappy and pimento-laced finish of solid length. It has a bit of steely ‘minerality’ and no shortage of energy. The name ‘Wild Soul’ is apposite, yes, but it’s a very good drink. Drink 2024 - 2026+

A blend of the brilliantly named varieties baga, jaen, and tinta amarela and some fifteen other varieties or so that join in. Sounds like the names of luchadores. Anyway, a Portuguese red of note!
Big, bold, rich mixed berry scents, whiffs of anise and undergrowth too. Silky texture with good, ripe berry fruit flavour but this shy of medium weight feel, even with a strong swipe of clove-woodiness through the finish. Gravelly tannins in tow, crunch of acidity a blast. It’s a pretty exciting red wine, thirst-quenching in a way but also with depth and carry through. Lingering blood orange tang. Cool wine, this. Bruised apple, marzipan, nutty and minty, slippery peach, saline and savoury. Westward Rum Cask Single Malt American Whiskey (700ml)
    Oregon, UNITED STATES
    $179. 99
    Bottle
    $2159.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

Rum cask finishes are slowly trending in American whiskey. The sweetness of American oak combined with rum bounce off each other beautifully when the balance is right. This example offers up hints of shaved coconut and chocolate rum balls, especially on the nose. On the palate, the rum influence is restrained, in accord with Westward's delicate, fruity spirit. Wood spices add vibrancy to the finish. Tasted from a 30ml sample.

Other reviews... Building off a 100% malt base, sweet complementary rum flavors add depth to this American single malt. Westward Whiskey is located in Portland, Oregon and specializes in a category of whiskey that’s particularly notable right now, American single malt. Westward offers a variety of finished single malts, including Pinot Noir Casks, Stout Casks, and more. Rum Cask starts with Westward’s Single Malt Whiskey as a base, and then it’s finished in ex-Guatemalan rum casks. Guatemalan rum is distilled from fermented virgin cane syrup, as opposed to molasses, and has a rich history that dates back as far as 1591. The cane sugar sweetness shows through against the malt base, permeating through the entire whiskey. However, Westward’s base malt maintains the backbone of the flavor profile, and isn’t shy about its malt notes. The rum sweetness works in complement with the malt base - even though they’re two very different flavor realms but somehow it just works. Overall, Westward Rum Cask is a fun, unique combination of flavors that doesn’t taste like any of the growing number of rum finished whiskeys you may find on the shelf. - breakingbourbon.com

Pierre Vincent Girardin is making big waves in Burgundy with the hype surrounding him already at fever pitch. All this and Pierre is still only in his early 20's with just a handful of vintages under his belt. Part of the excitement stems from the vineyard sources at his disposal, but also from the distinct style exhibited so clearly in these initial vintages of his wines. Of course it helps that his father is Vincent Girardin, and following the sale of his namesake Domaine in 2011 bequeathed Pierre 4.5 hectares of prime vineyards, and helped set up a brand new winery where evidently no expense has been spared on the latest presses, fermentation tanks and larger-format barrels from Tonnellerie François Frères.

Stylistically Pierre has taken a different approach than that of his father's wines, preferring a lighter touch than the rich and oaky style of years gone by. The white wines are finer-boned and more reductive, and his are reds delicate and fruit-driven, with a minimum of extraction and plenty of stem retention.

Les Suchots is the largest premier cru in Vosne-Romanee, situated between the grand crus of Echezeaux on one side, and Romanee-Saint-Vivant and Richebourg on the other. Soils here are richer than the other premier cru plots further up the slope, and produces wines with excellent perfume and character.

Please note: due to the winery packaging, we often receive these wines from the distributor with marks on the front label. These are usually minor, however they are unavoidable.

La Colombière is a hamlet situated within the commune of Vosne-Romanée. This vineyard is positioned just east of the village area that borders the Grand Cru vineyard Romanée St-Vivant. The Dasher + Fisher label is named for the two rivers that run from the mountains to the pristine coast of Tasmania’s north-west. Together they form the water supply for three very different gins created by George Burgess at the Southern Wild Distillery. “Meadow” is the most popular in the range and includes fifteen botanicals such as oranges, wild Tasmanian herbs and flowers as well as sage, cardamon, wild fennel, lavender, bay leaf, rosemary and juniper. Enjoy with a light tonic and a slice of orange for a refreshing G&T, or mix into a botanical-forward cocktail. Meadow Gin also pairs beautifully with elderflower tonic, garnished with fresh herbs, for a sophisticated summer drink.

Tasting note: Clear. Intense aromas of white pepper, lime juice, woody juniper and potpourri. Follows through with flavours of pepper/dried herbs and orange peel. Finishes spicy, peppery, warm and with excellent persistence. Lovely texture. Great new gin. Recommended in a G&T garnished with a slice of ruby grapefruit or in a negroni. 45% Alc./Vol.

European rye was used with maturation taking place in American oak casks. Our tasting revealed a beautifully balanced whisky that departs from the intense spice and muddled mint character of many high proof American standards. This is more like chewing rye bread studded with dried peach or mango and is close to a sherried Scottish single malt in terms of mouthfeel. The finish brings forward a slightly oily aspect before turning drier and vaguely herbal with cocoa and the spiciness of the grain adding a closing zing. While it doesn't stand out in any particular way, it is an original and noteworthy addition to the category. 50% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... This is initially creamy to nose, but enticingly spicy on repeat visits, with aromas of cereal grains, rye bread, macadamia nuts, burnt bread crust, and hints of coffee bean. The flavors are delicious, and include caramel popcorn, apple, a snap of rye spices, toasted rye bread, dark chocolate, black tea, and a toffee sweetness that accompanies the spices into the finish. A compelling rye whisky that is definitely worth tracking down. 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...Didn't expect to see this, I have to admit. Though glad I did. No mistaking the grain, which is intense and deep. But Amrut have certainly carved their own personality onto this which is similar to some better North American ryes, Alberta being the closest. But there is a barely perceptible slant away from that into wholly new territory. 91.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024

Notes from the producers... Aromas and flavours of freshly baked bread and something tropical seque into floral and spicy notes.

Moscato was gently pressed to a stainless steel tank where a special yeast was added that enhances aroma. The wine was then cold fermented at around 10-12 degrees Celsius until about 6.5% alcohol was produced. To stop fermentation, sulphur was added and the temperature was quickly lowered to 0 degrees Celsius.
