Wild Turkey Master's Keep Triumph Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey (750ml)

    $4788.00 Dozen
    ABV: 52%

"...the best Rye this distillery has released" - therobbreport.com

Most Wild Turkey rye is aged about 4-6 years. Triumph breaks the mould as the oldest age-stated rye the distillery has ever released. In fact, there's whiskey up to 12 years old in the blend. It marks the 10th Master’s Keep since the series began in 2015, and only the second rye (the other was Cornerstone which was not age-stated).

Wild Turkey Master Distiller, Jimmy Russell has never been a fan of ultra-aged whiskeys, preferring the top age to be 8-10 years—older than most American whiskeys, but not beyond that limit. His son, Master Distiller Eddie Russell, has long liked his whiskey a bit older, and Master’s Keep has largely been his domain. Eddie recounts that his first real exposure to ultra-aging whiskeys came in 1997—there was no room at Wild Turkey for the distillate—so he stored the barrels in the brick warehouses of nearby Stone Castle Distillery, which are no longer there. The brick environment caused the whiskey to age slower than in a rickhouse—to Eddie’s palate, an 8 year old tasted like a 4 year old aged at Wild Turkey. “We kept some of it until it got to 17 years old, and it was some of the most unique whiskey I’d ever tasted,” he says. “It was very layered but had an oaky finish on the back—a chewy finish.” That whiskey became the foundation for the older whiskeys within the Master’s Keep family.

The inspiration behind Triumph was the enthusiasm for rye shown by Eddie’s son Bruce, but it’s also meant to celebrate rye’s overall renaissance. Most rye had long been made in the northeast states of Maryland and Pennsylvania—even Jimmy Russell purchased rye from distilleries up there back in the day. But the last of those places began to shutter in the 1980s and rye production in the United States dwindled to less than 100,000 cases. Today it's approaching two million cases. This year's Master’s Keep showcases the categories luxury side. 52% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... There’s plenty of barrel influence on the nose here, a layer of char that tempers the grassy greenery that is otherwise prominent aromatically. Drying with a slight barnyard note of hay bales and saddle leather, the nose has an austerity that you rarely see in the world of rye, which normally gravitates to peppery pungency over everything else. Here, the rye grain is balanced by the barrel — without becoming particularly sweet, a nifty trick. The palate finds an impressive balance not often seen in the world of American rye. Spicy and peppery up top, then silky with notes of caramel and vanilla — so immersive and creamy you might think you’re drinking a bourbon. That’s probably intentional given Wild Turkey’s love of the corn-based whiskey, and as the experience shifts into notes of baked apples, butterscotch, and sweetened breakfast cereal. It’s actually a bit too fruity on the back end for me, reminding me of some older Canadian ryes, though it has a certain holiday charm that feels tailor-made for spice-laden cocktails, toddies, and the like. If anything, it’s a fun diversion from the parade of bourbons that Wild Turkey has been cranking out — as delightful as those have been. - drinkhacker.com

...This is an absolutely beautiful rye whiskey and really a testament to the quality of liquid that Wild Turkey is known for, but that price could make it a tough sell for some people. 95 points - therobbreport.com

    Leblon Cachaca (700ml)
    Minas Gerais, BRAZIL
    $86. 99
    Bottle
    $1043.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

“Cachaça is the next Tequila, and Leblon is its first high-end brand.” - The Wall Street Journal

The brainchild of a former Moet Hennessey executive, Leblon was launched in 2005 and takes its name from Leblon Beach in Rio de Janeiro. The distillery is located in Patos de Minas, an agricultural town in the western highlands of Minas Gerais and prides itself on using only the freshest cane juice obtained within three hours of harvest. Only the mid-section of the cane is pressed where the highest quality liquid is found, and unlike other cachaça distilleries which increase the force of their pressing to maximize yield, Maison Leblon gently presses the cane to extract only the best-tasting sensorial qualities from the cane stalks. Following distillation in an alembic copper still, the liquid spends a short spell in French oak casks seasoned with brandy, some of which previously held cognac.

Other reviews... Clean and full-flavoured, Leblon is a good and easily accessible example of what a cachaca should be. 5 Stars. - diffordsguide.com

“This bouquet oozes authenticy and a sense of place. It’s in the palate entry that the first burst of sugarcane sweetness emerges and that’s a welcome development.” - F. Paul Pacult's Spirits Journal

Fritz's Riesling grows in a very small and special part of Rheinhessen called the Roter Hang, a name meaning “red hill“ due to its red-slate soils. The combination of the red slate soil, its proximity to the Rhine river, exposure to the sun and the steepness of the vineyards are perfect for producing wines with wonderful ripeness.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Lifted aromas of lime and red apple are trailed by some pear, wet slate and flinty notes. Mouth watering pear, lime and red apple fruits are underpinned by crisp, juicy acidity. Traces of honeysuckle and slatey mineral elements linger through the dry back half. Finishes fruity with plenty of zip and length.

McLaren Vale Merlot from the Malpas Road vineyard planted in 1991. The wine is a deep maroon hue, while the nose offers notes of plums and warm earth, leather and cloves. This is a Merlot from the serious end of the spectrum; it has depth and concentration, with a supple palate, appealing texture and good length. Mulberries and mushrooms emerge on the palate, complemented by a firm finish and slightly grippy tannins. For drinking now and over the next five to six years. Drink 2024-2030.

The 2021 Les Amis Grenache is spicy and wide, meaty and yet floral, with black tea, dried rose petals, graphite, roast beef crust, a hint of pastrami, blood orange and salted macadamias. The wine is shaped by charry oak (matured in barrique as opposed to Harris and Hillside foudre). This lends an altogether different angle to the wine, and I must admit, I quite like it. The oak is in the charry, bacon fat, pipe resin, tobacco spectrum, and it sits very well with the sweet, floral fruit. This is a very interesting wine here. Drink 2024-2036.

Erin Larkin – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate

The Slade vineyard in Greenock produces this atypically dense, well-structured Grenache, with a firmer acid and tannin profile than most. In a milder vintage – and with a little whole-bunch ferment – it throws long and reveals a little more of itself when, sometimes, Les Amis can feel impenetrable. Nonetheless, it retains savoury nuance, with medicinal, cough sweet herbaceousness and a touch of eucalyptus to the red-fruited, warming kirsch core. Drink 2025-2035.

Brings both the power and the charm that resides in Heathcote cabernet sauvignon to the glass. The power lies in the concentration of black fruit and its collaboration with ripe, firm tannins. The charm? Well, it's freely expressed in lifted violet, acacia, oregano, leaf and earth. Woodsmoke oak works its way gently, persuasively across both parties. Lovely. Drink by 2033.

Crafted from the region’s most noted red variety, aromas of crimson and purple berries rather than darker, blacker, denser fruit offer a vibrant start that’s enhanced with harmonic cooler mint and dusted cut ivy sensibilities. The juiciness that follows gathers all those attractive aromatic elements into a cleverly weighted palate, neatly feathered with light tannins – just right for this everyday Cabernet. Since the first edition in 1859, the annual Hospices de Beaune auction has become a barometer for the strength of the new vintage in Burgundy, and is now the most famous charity auction in the world of wine. Over the years the charitable cause was given vineyards among other donations, and auctions off barrels from these holdings during a extended celebration in Burgundy over the third weekend of November.

Jean-Louis Peste practiced medicine at the Hospices de Beaune for over 30 years in the mid-19th century. His daughter, Baronne de Baÿ, bequeathed a vast estate to the Hôtel-Dieu in 1924, in memory of her father. Made from 89% very old vines, or vines planted before 1985, this Cuvée is historically a blend of Grand Cru parcels: Chaumes and Voierosses for the most part, as well as Bressandes and Les Grèves. A select few barrels from 2020 vintage were purchased by the prestigious Domaine Coche-Dury for elevage in their cellars, a program they have invested heavily in recent years.

Pokeno Prohibition Porter Single Malt New Zealand Whisky (700ml)

    $2159.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

"A minor classic, it has to be said. And for a three year old, simply ridiculously good." - Jim Murray's Whisky's Bible

After a full maturation in a first-fill bourbon cask, the Pokeno team finished this special limited edition in a barrel sourced from Liberty Brewing which previously contained their fantastic Prohibition Porter. The result is an incredibly smooth and rich malt, with notes of cocoa and chocolate, which combine beautifully with the citrus and vanilla. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... the malt is brittle and profound. In the background though, the pleasant acidic nip of something a little burned... what a delivery! Unique! And truly delicious. Myriad barley tones fizz at the taste buds, ranging from an almost Irish pot still unmalted hardness, through concentrated sweet barley and finally reaching something far more toasty and eye watering. In the meantime, the structure of the whisky itself changes and becomes increasingly oily to the point of outright creaminess... almost like an old-fashioned milk stout... Creamy and complex, it belies its years with an assured performance... A minor classic , it has to be said. And for a three year old, simply ridiculously good. 94.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024

Notes from the producers... Nose: Rich notes of clove and honey descend into subtle aromas of sun ripened fruit and toasty caramel. Palate: Sumptuous, dried fruits, and hazelnuts with distinctive oak spice balanced deliciously with the influences of the delectable Marsala cask. Finish: A delicate sweetness of spiced caramel, roasted hazelnut and raisin that lingers lightly on the tongue.

Matured in 500L puncheons for 8 months of which 22% was new oak. Golden peach and nectarine flesh, sunflower and kernel. Lemon aspen and pineapple nectar. Summer frangipani blooms. Like a giving tree this wine bestows without being buxom and relying on oak for its breadth. It’s pure fruit heaven. Picked with free flowing acidity and supported by vanilla cake and grated nutmeg oak nuances. Thistledown is the vision of Master of Wine, Giles Cooke. His focus is on Grenache working with growers across McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and Riverland. Fruit for the Vagabond was sourced from four separate old, dry grown, bush trained vineyards in Blewitt Springs planted in deep sands with some ironstone. Fermented with 35% whole bunches it was matured in mix of concrete egg and oak puncheons.

Deep dark red core with black shaded edges and a vibrant dark red purple hue. Late Bottled Vintage Port is a from a single year, aged for 4-6 years in old oak casks (opposed to Vintage that ages 2-3).
LBV fills the gap between the rubies and the vintage ports since a Ruby Port should be drunk quite young and a great Vintage Port may need 15 to 20 years to really open up and show its splendour. Unfiltered, with very good concentration and tons of spice. Will develop beautifully over several years.

    Other Reviews.....
The 2019 Late Bottled Vintage Port is unfiltered and closed with a cork, the serious style of this category, from a very good year in the style of 2005 or 2015 that can age for decades. It has 100 grams of sugar and is velvety and really a mini Vintage Port, aged for a bit longer in cask (but short for the category) and bottled in its fourth year. It's still tannic and a bit closed, with the tannin is cushioning the sweetness. It could be drunk now but should be a lot more complex with time in bottle. It has balance with a big structure, able to age for a long time. 2019 was a very complete year for Port. They produced 100,000 bottles of this. It was bottled in 2023

Weighty and wonderfully ripe and silken, tannins superfine and melting back into the black fruits and finishing long, fruit pure with a slightly savoury lean. Drink by 2040.

A wonderfully fragrant pinot noir showing fruit tones of red cherry, raspberry and nectarine fruits with hints of exotic spice, red licorice, amaro herbs, pressed wildflowers, celery salt and twiggy bits and pieces. St Johns is one of the highest regions in the Barossa Valley situated on the Northern section of the Western Ridge at an elevation of 300 metres. It borders the subregions of Ebenezer, Koonunga and Moppa. This Shiraz was matured in a combination of 66% French oak (60.4% new) and 34% American oak for a period of 16 months.
Wow! What magnificent colour saturation – Impenetrable pitch black heart with an equally deep black dark purple hue. Intense freshly crushed blackberry, dark plum and liquorice aromas are trailed by vanillin cedar, some inky earth like notes and pepper. Rich, dense and concentrated yet youthfully fresh, the full bodied palate is swamped with freshly crushed blackberry juice, dark plum and liquorice fruit. Inky yet opulent feel with vibrant acidity and slightly chalky tannins. Vanillin cedar, earthy graphite and pepper elements lie underneath. The finish long, energetic and tense.
    Cellar 8-10 years.

Shiraz sourced from St Johns at the northern extremity of the Barossa Valley. A very deeply coloured wine with rich aromas of macerated blood plums, blackberry, black cherry and cassis. Hints of baking spice, licorice, Christmas cake, Old Jamaican chocolate, olive tapenade, herbs and pastis. Great fruit density with a sandy tannin grip and a real sense of compression and latent power, finishing inky with graphite-edged black fruits and plenty of grunt. Drink by 2035.

Chris Hatcher knows a thing or two about Barossa Shiraz and in this case, he’s drawn on all his experience to produce something special from this powerful statement of the region. Has all the voluptuous fruit intensity you expect but then a fine touch has applied the brakes with fine, sleek tannins and finely tuned oak. A cracking good wine which I would drink in the medium term. Drink 2023-2031.

One thing I learnt about Hatch with this latest batch of wines is that he is a big jazz fan – not something we share, but if people really want to listen to a cage of starving cats caught in a car wreck, who am I to deny them. Just as long as they can make wines like this. The St Johns vineyard is one of the most elevated in the Barossa, at 300 metres. Bordering such famous sub-regional names as Koonunga, Moppa and Ebenezer, the fruit is fermented on skins in small, open top fermenters for five to ten days. This is a deep magenta. Notes of dry herbs, cloves, black fruits, aniseed, mulberries and tobacco leaves plus some cassis on the palate. This is a little more savoury in style and at this early stage, exhibits fractionally more oak influence with good grip and excellent length. Enjoy over the next eight to ten years. Drink 2023-2033.

The 2022 Saint-Joseph from Pierre Gonon is a beauty. Despite a slightly introverted bouquet, it is bursting with aromas of cherries, black olive, violet, dark berries and blueberry. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and layered with a textural attack, it's pure with a fleshy core of fruit framed by supple tannins and a refreshing perfumed mid-palate that culminates in an ethereal, long and delicately floral finish. Despite a dry vintage, this refined, precise wine is full of freshness. It will require patience (10 to 15 years). Kudos! Drink 2029-2044.

The 2022 Saint-Joseph is medium-bodied, showcasing ripe red plum, orange rind, graphite, violet and a hint of licorice on the nose. Black and red fruits, licorice, graphite, dried herbs, and chocolate notes all define the 2022 Saint Joseph. Relatively light in body for this cuvée, with very fine tannins for the vintage and good acidity. Nice sense of vibrancy, but perhaps not as deep or long as the finest vintages of Gonon's St-Joseph. Enjoyably crisp structure, however, and a lightly mineral finish. There's a possibility this might close down for a period, so drink young or wait until 2030. Drink 2024-2036.

    $1019.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46.2%

Made from a hybrid mash of Australian heritage rye and single-origin barley, Loaded Barrel's rye is matured in virgin Serbian oak and customised virgin American oak direct from Kentucky. Finishing takes place in a cold-smoked ex red-wine barrel for additional wood-driven complexity. The tasting notes on the label are spot on: Smoked applewood, toffee and spice are beautifully expressed; a surge of sugars slightly flattens the finish, shifting focus from the typically spicy grain character; regardless, this has been skilfully handled and should appeal to both rye and malt drinkers. Surprisingly good for a new distillery, in a sweeter style that also integrates nicely with ice. 46.2 % Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... The aroma lures you in with vanilla filled smoke, followed with a subtle rye kick. On the palate the taste begins with classic single malt notes of oak-driven vanilla and toffee, closely followed by rye whisky’s signature spice. This is quickly mellowed by smooth applewood smoke that’s not overpowering, finishing with Christmas spices that linger on the tongue until your next sip.

Since legendary US importer Kermit Lynch dubbed them the Gang of Four in the 1980's, wine collectors the world over have been searching for the precious few bottles of Beaujolais from Jean Foillard, Marcel Lapierre, Guy Breton, and Jean-Paul Thévenet. Each of these producers were inspired by the natural wine growing and wine making methods of local hero Jules Chauvet. Their aim is to help the unique Beaujolais terroir express itself with minimal intervention, harnessing old vines farmed with organic practices, fermentation with natural yeasts, along with limited use of sulphur. Together they have raised not only the profile of the region, but demonstrated that Beaujolais is more than just 'Nouveau' and can indeed produce meaningful, complex and wonderful wines.

Along with his son Alex, Jean Foillard farms nearly fourteen hectares of vines planted mainly on the famed slopes of the Côte du Py in Morgon. As probably the most dependable of the Gang of Four, the wines of Jean Foillard are deep, structured, and complex, with a velvety lushness that makes them irresistible when young despite their aging potential. The wines are raised in older barrels sourced from top estates in Burgundy, including those from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, with the resulting efforts perhaps showing more in common with Chambolle-Musigny than what we've come to expect from 'regular' Beaujolais.

    Other Reviews....
The 2022 Fleurie has a beautifully defined nose with wonderful mineralité like Foillard's other cuvées, surfeited with energy. There’s real purity and panache. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of mulberry on the entry and fine depth, lightly spiced with a vibrant and persistent finish tinged with curry leaf. This is a Fleurie from the top drawer. Excellent. Drink 2026-2036.

    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Other reviews... This was launched as a ‘budget’ single malt for Tesco. It’s good that it would come with an age statement, but the ABV screams ‘cheapo’. It is, in fact, one of the several styles made at Ailsa Bay at Girvan. Let’s see… Colour: light gold. Nose: some farmy peat, a little mud, some grist and a touch of vanillin. Well, this baby does not tear you apart, that’s good. In a way. Mouth: extremely light, with some smoke, a touch of apple and lemon, notes of smoked ham, and perhaps a touch of iodine. There is something of the lightest Laphroaig 10s – not the current production mind you. Frustratingly light body. Finish: short, leaving a feeling of smoked water. Comments: peat is good but when there’s only peat (plus a little barley), that’s not quite enough. A little disappointing, typical 75-pointer in my book, hope they’ll also do a kind of high-proof version, without dropping the age statement. 75 points - whiskyfun.com

Other reviews... This should be Ailsa Bay as well, but not at the price of Ailsa Bay. What’s a sea cask by the way? Did they use floated wood? Stored this on an island? On some shore? Now let’s not forget one of the industry’s talking points, ‘Scotland is integrally coastal’. Aye aye. Colour: light gold. Nose: I like this better. It’s a fine, balanced, easy malt whisky, on barley, vanilla, bread and caraway/nutmeg. I always like it when it’s this close to bread and barley, even when it’s not complex. Mouth: yes, it’s pretty pleasant, what a shame that it hasn’t got much watts, and that it is dragging itself along with little enthusiasm. Wee touches of brine, that’s nice – is that the ‘sea’ part? Finish: short, but really okay as far as flavours are concerned. Comments: good potential here. 43% would really be welcome. 79 points - whiskyfun.com

A bright, sunny personality is underlined by bright golden colour and lively tropical notes atop a pithy citrus body. It’s an honest reflection of site – mostly clone P58 Chardonnay planted at 100m elevation along south- and east-facing slopes on grey clay loam – with the cool location providing lively acidity that ensures good intensity and drive. Tarraford is the lowest and theoretically the warmest of Giant Steps single vineyard sites, though altitude isn’t everything when it comes to temperature. I used to live across the road from a steep, hillside vineyard where it was noticeably warmer at the top than it was at the bottom, a phenomenon known as temperature inversion, I believe. I digress.
I looked at this over the course of 24 hours and over that time the wine’s grapefruit characters became more and more dominant. That’s a very good thing. It also tastes of custard apples, cedar-spice, pear and white peach, a pistachio ice-cream character in there too, but the drive of grapefruit here is the wave on which everything else surfs. Tip top release. Well fruited but then dry and pebbly to close. Drink 2024 - 2032+

Majority P58 clone. White grapefruit, winter melon and lemongrass. Blue stone, chalk and raw pancake batter. Lemon aspen and lilly pilly fruit. The wine has a coolness, not just in its refreshing quality but in its textural feel. Like a coconut milk based iced tea. Long lines of natural and unforced acidity, with power but no trace of heft. Raw cashew on the finish. The wine is shaped like an acute triangle with its tapering acidity funnelled down the palate. In the glass on the day, this is the wine that was drinking at its best now with plenty of precision and detail. Tarraford has its dedicated fans and this is one of the best yet. Drink now or cellar for 5 years or so and serve with pan seaweed King George whiting fillets.

From the Sexton vineyard in Gruyere; 10% whole bunches and matured nine months in French barriques (25% new). A deep ruby. Aromas of kirsch, damson plums, licorice root and spices; this heady, concentrated wine has a lot of meat on the bones, with ripe, persistent tannins boding well for the future. A longer ripening period during the 2023 vintage has amplified aromas, with shades of violet at the edge of ripe blood plum and dark cherry. The ripeness is also reflected in bright, luscious blood plum and dark cherry flavours in the front palate; while the combination of MV6, G5V15 and Abel clones provides a keen savoury note, with earthy bite and graphite notes. It might be north-facing and exposed but there’s a coolness to this release. It tastes of forest berries and boysenberries with toast and sprays of alpine herbs. It’s not overtly minty but it has that cooling feel. There’s a sweetness to the spice and a general impression of completeness, the latter aided by a full suite of ripe, grainy, meaty tannin. The final blend of this wine is around 21% whole bunch fermented. A quiet wine in the glass that needs a bit of time before it reveals itself, be patient as this wine unfurls and gains momentum. It is deeply pigmented in garnet hues and shows black raspberries, cherries and rose petals. Woodsy herbs like rosemary stem, thyme, clove and sesame. Front to middle palate tannins are grainy and astute. There are granite-like immoveable foundations to this wine that will allow it to live a long time. So too is there significant turbidity and viscosity to this wine. Drink now or cellar for 8 years. A perfect wine for blackened skinned cod.

Right now, this is the most salivating and seductive of Giant Step's superb array of single-vineyard chardonnays from '23. A cold, wet spring and cooler summer has given power and drive to bright, lively flavours from the high-elevation (200m) Sexton Vineyard. Lifted aromas show dark tones of exotic tropical fruits – grilled pineapple, yuzu and guava – with some fresh grated ginger. The palate entry is focused and tightly bound, although this taut and proud wine benefits from 20% malolactic fermentation and some battonage post-fermentation to add roundness to the mouthfeel. It has exuberance to match its serious power and drive. Drink 2024 - 2032.

There’s genuine intensity of chardonnay fruit flavour here and a keen bite that goes with it. Sweet pear, white peach and citrus characters lead to a finish of green pineapple, grapefruit and brine, every step along the way both deliberate and powerful. No meanderings allowed here. Nougat oak teams it all seamlessly together, the finish long and resounding. General view would be that this is good to drink now but for me it needs at least another year in bottle. The north facing Sexton vineyard planted in late 90’s is Giant Steps home base. In the planted 30Ha of chardonnay, Mel Chester has her pick of the patchwork vineyard pulling from Gingin, Mendoza and Bernard clones. Here we see about 50% Gingin. This wine has character. You cannot or will ever say it’s a wallflower. Driven by its intensity of orchard fruit, nectarine and white peach, backed by some of the spiciest back up singers. Turmeric, curry leaf, dandelion and cumin. It’s muscular, powerful and yet graceful, like the stride of an outside centre in rugby, Mark Ella, perhaps. A hint of churned butter and glace pineapple on the finish. Acidity hums along nicely. There is something for everyone’s palate here and this vintage is singing in perfect harmony. Maturation takes place in French oak barriques for a period of 10 months.

Loaded Barrel Single Malt Australian Whisky (500ml)
    Melbourne, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Conceived in 2018 in Rowville, South East Melbourne, Loaded Barrel started as a passion project of Bob Wilhelma's with a goal to create a family legacy, but more importantly, damn good whisky and gin. In his own words, "the stuff you dream of drinking as you watch your clock slowly tick down to 5pm on a weekday." Their spirits are distilled in a sleek custom-made pot-still with a tall tapered neck and an inclined lyne arm allowing a large amount of passive reflux resulting in a light, fruity, easy-to-drink distillate. The single malt is described as "...a new-classic: a whisky that uses customised virgin American oak barrels for that vanilla & toffee sweetness, finished in ex-sherry casks for an ending of plum and dark berry that lingers on the tongue." High resonance Solfeggio frequencies, mostly 528Hz are played to help with the mellowing process (they concede that might be wasting their time). If the flavours aren't seamlessly integrated just yet, they're not far off. The palate is rich and malty with a fruitiness like dried apricots or fruit cake picked up from the sherry casks; beneath that, virgin oak kicks in an undercurrent of vanilla and light caramels. At 43% it's mouth-filling, plus there's a poise and ease of drinkability rarely found in young Aussie whisky. So much character now, with time and further tweaking this distillery is only going to get better. At the asking price it's already one of the country's best values.

A limited edition Macallan matured exclusively in sherry casks and bottled at ABV 40%. It's part of the 'Colour Collection' which sees a return to age statements for the duty free market and represents a celebration of Macallan's commitment to natural colour and sherry seasoning. From its pale oak colour to the deep burnished chestnut of the 30 Year Old, the colour of these whiskies gradually deepens. The presentation is captured through the eyes of American Artist and Graphic Designer, David Carson, who collaborated with the distillery to create the campaign artwork. American oak casks, harmoniously complemented with a subtle inclusion from European oak are employed. This is probably quite a large outturn, yet it's still sold at an extremely high price compared to the general release 12YO, so you could say it's another Macallan aimed at 'conspicuous consumption'.

Other reviews... Around 150€ vs. around 70€ for the 12 yo 'Double Cask', there must be something happening. Pure golden promise? Proper sherry butts used in bodegas and not just seasoned? What's sure is that the label is beautiful. And the whisky, you may ask? Let's see… Colour: deep gold. Nose: reassuring, slightly fat given the low strength – which is good – with rather a lot of beeswax and many dandelion flowers, then some apricot and mirabelle jams, juicy fresh sultanas, fudge, acacia honey… It would then fade away a little bit, because of the bizarrely low strength. Are we still in 1995? Mouth: good presence, with the expected roasted nuts and toasted breads, but some burnt oak tends to feel in the background. Some chestnut honey, black Assam (remember we say Assam for any black tea, ha), black pepper, a wee bit of cardboard that, indeed, feels a little '1995'… And some fresh marmalade and more mirabelle jam lifting it a little bit. Finish: short, the 40% vol. really feel now. Or rather, they do not feel. Cardboard, sawdust, marmalade, dried apricots. Comments: it's rather simple, 84 points at 40% vol. and probably 85 at 43% vol., 86 at 46% and 87 at 50%. You bet! 84 points - whiskyfun.com

From 30 year old vines. Bright dark red core with black toned edges and a vibrant light purple red hue. Fragrant violet, red cherry, strawberry and rhubarb scents blossom out of the glass followed by some dried herb, forest floor and subtle spicy cedar notes. Light in body the palate is decorated with juicy cherry, strawberry and rhubarb flavours. Forest floor, fresh herb and spicy cedar elements lie underneath. Vibrant acidity lends freshness. Polished tannins finishing long, elegant and savoury.

Estate fruit, machine harvested and handpicked. 10 months on medium lees of which 25% was new oak and 15% whole bunch. Much like Champagne maisons hold their NV wine high and mighty, Castle Rock’s estate Pinot Noir sets the benchmark for quality. You’ll find preserved strawberries, wild hibiscus, dark cherries and notes of savoury wagyu bresaola. Torn rosemary, pine needle and bay leaf. Sweet blackberry wine gums and licorice root. Sappy tannins and a thread of straight shooting acidity. There is a chew to the red berried fruit and a nice crunch of pomegranate seed on the finish. A well rounded wine. Drink now and will cellar another 3-4 years. A perfect partner to black truffled scrambled eggs on sourdough. Drink 2024-2028.

A vivid, fine-boned and tightly wound pinot noir of exceptional length and persistence with vibrant, effusive perfume. Red cherry at the tarter end of the spectrum with twiggy wood notes, some faint eucalyptus, white pepper, mezcal spiciness and a sense of freshness overall. Tannins are lacy, ultra-fine and tighten the wine well. It's delicate, almost blink and you'll miss, but the filigree is all here. Drink by 2034.

Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Elevated aromas of white peach, nectarine and dried honey drift through the nostrils trailed by hints of crème brulee, biscuity nougat and spice notes. The gently creamed palate carries medium body weight with fleshy white peach and dried honey flavours to the fore. Subtle citrusy nougat, cashew and spice elements lurk beneath. Nicely balanced it finishes medium to long with a cream tinged feel.

Matured in French oak puncheons for 8 months. Semi translucent vibrant red to dark red colour with a bright light red purple tinged hue. Fragrant violet red cherry and strawberry scents drift through the nostrils with some delicate anise, forest floor and fresh herb notes also evident. Light in body, juicy red cherry and strawberry fruits decorate the palate with traces of anise, forest floor and spicy cedar lending further interest across the back half. Fresh acidity and polished tannins finishing long and delicious.

Matured in 500L puncheons for 8 months of which 17% was new oak. Magenta, where red and purple meet. This junction is where the wine fits. Violet and lavender perfume with red cherries and blackberries. Boysenberry and two tone mulberry. Plums skin and sangria. A base note of allspice and lifted sage leaf. Fruit doubles down on the palate with briary tones replaced with blackcurrant and blueberries. Befitting dusty tannins and once again a wine that refreshes the palate on the finish. A smart wine. Drink now and will cellar up to 3 years further. A wonderful wine for wild mushroom pasta. Drink 2024-2027.

Matured in 500L French puncheons (17% new) for eight months. A light, bright ruby red. An attractive, delicate nose offering scents of raspberries, cranberries and gentle spice and rose petal. A forward, very easy-drinking wine with ultra-silky tannins on the smooth finish. Drink now and over the next two to three years. Drink by 2027.

During the early years of the Royal British Navy there existed no method for assessing the alcohol content of spirits or any other alcoholic drink. This posed a particular challenge, as they needed to ensure that any volume of alcohol transported aboard a ship would ignite if the cask were damaged during combat. While it may seem peculiar, in times when cannonballs and muskets were in use, damp gunpowder could prove fatal in battle. Therefore, it was imperative that any spilled spirit retained sufficient flammability to allow the use of the powder. To determine this, a test was conducted by blending a small amount of the spirit with gunpowder to create a paste, which was then ignited. If the mixture burned, it was deemed to be 100 degrees proof.

Blind Tiger Navy Strength Organic Gin is distilled in the same small batch manner as all gins in the Blind Tiger Organic Gin range but is bottled at the much higher strength, in fact, at the time of writing, it's the highest of any Navy Strength Gin in Australia, and as such displays concentrated, pungent juniper and lime citrus aroma on first pour. These open to intense citrus and spice character of the other botanicals with time. When neat, it is peppery hot on the palate and has a drying finish at this higher alcohol content, just a drop of water in a glass sees the spirit open up and reveal its exotic character. Guarantees a richly flavoured G&T when mixed. 59.9% Alc./Vol.

When the Scottish-born Ryrie brothers planted vines in 1838, their land, named ‘Yering’ by the First Nations People, became Victoria’s first vineyard. In 1996, the Rathbone family purchased Yering Station and transformed it into a regional icon. The vines are meticulously managed using precision viticulture technology and careful handwork to ensure the highest quality fruit reaches the winery and, ultimately, the bottle.
Their flagship "Reserve" Cabernet Sauvignon is produced only in the best years, using the finest parcels of fruit. The Reserve wines represent the pinnacle of their efforts, capturing the essence of variety, viticulture, location, season, and winemaking in its purest form.

The well-composed 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve offers up punchy aromas of violets and cassis, with clay tones. Dry, midweight and shapely, a deep well of structural tannins provides impressive definition to the long, savory finish, retaining that composure throughout. Drink 2027 - 2035.

98/2% cabernet sauvignon/merlot matured in 225L French barriques (17% new) for 15 months. A bright, medium crimson red. An impressive bouquet with dark cherry, blackcurrant, pencil box and violet scents. Impeccably balanced, this medium- to full-bodied and elegant wine has a good depth of fruit and excellent structure. The tannins are fine, gently chewy and persistent, and this will continue to evolve and become more complex over the next decade or so. Drink 2022 - 2035.

A solid, compact, medium-bodied and highly savory expression. Redcurrants, cassis, strewn garden herbs, mulch and olives, smeared across the sappy, finely appointed cedar edges that compress the gently leafy finish. A good luncheon claret sort of wine. Screw cap. Drink or hold.

The 2021 Pinot Noir Reserve is very appealing as it delivers energetic red and dark cherry aromas, with a gentle dusting of violets and dried herbs. Fleshy and mouth-filling, there is a hearty core of earthy/mushroom flavors and old spices, al-dente tannins providing some support. Gravelly minerality adds a savory counterpoint that lingers through to the finish. This needs at least a couple of years to settle. Drink 2025 - 2031.

Brendan Hawker’s first beginning-to-end reserve pinot. A 70/30% split of MV6/Abel clones; 5% whole bunches and matured in 500L French puncheons (15% new). A bright, deep-ish crimson purple. Darkly fruited and immediately seductive with its aromas of black raspberries, dark cherry, spice and discreet oak. There's an old-vine creaminess on the palate and you barely notice the wine's firm, velvety and persistent tannins. It's great now and it'll be great in 10 years. Drink 2022 - 2032.

This is a fine regional pinot, brimming with red cherry, bergamot, peony and notes of crushed musk. The tannins, sinuous, shapely and pliant across the medium-bodied palate, meld effortlessly with a ping of cinnamon oak. A beautifully sculpted pinot, to be rewarded. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

The well-proportioned 2021 Shiraz Viognier Reserve delivers serious and intense aromas of old leather, white pepper and dark cherry, with aged-meat complexity. Co-fermented with 2% viognier and matured for 15 months in 21% new French barriques and puncheons. A deep-ish crimson ruby. Just so fragrant with its aromas of red and blue fruits, florals, allspice and a hint of incense. This medium-bodied and beautifully poised wine caresses the palate before finishing with persistent well-knit tannins that are a good reminder that, as delicious as this is now, it's also been built to last. The Carr Vineyard is the nexus of this beautifully etched, medium-bodied Reserve, considerably more shapely and refined than I recall from past experiences. There is clear attention paid to the bow of tannin, lithe, gently edgy and nicely frisky, promoting a gush of pepper, juniper and clove across the finish, infusing the panoply of blue fruits with savoriness over obvious fruit sweetness. Nicely done. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
