Eden Hall was established by David Hall, a well-respected spinal surgeon, and his wife Mardi when they purchased the Avon Brae property in 1996. They quickly set about re-establishing the vineyard and the first commercial release was in 2004. Today the property has over 80 acres under vine. Sourced from selected rows in Eden Hall’s Block 4 vineyard, the wine was matured for 22 months in French oak and spent more than a year in bottle prior to release. The talented Phil Lehmann was the winemaker of this large scaled 2021 Shiraz.
A powerhouse of dense, rich, voluptuous fruit.
Impenetrable inky black in colour with a very deep dark red black tinged hue. Wafting out of the glass are heady aromas of ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark plum which are married to toasty vanillin oak, dark chocolate, fennel and peppered earth notes. Rich, voluptuous and dense, the palate is a super concentrate of ripe blackberry, liquorice, dark plum and black cherry fruits. Smoky vanillin oak, fennel and peppered earth elements also chime in to add further interest across the back half. Velvet smooth yet solidly structured tannins. Boasting magnificent power and depth it has an ultra-long finish that’s decadently rich and plush.

A fluffy white mousse subsides slowly to reveal a pale straw coloured base that’s threaded by a very fine and persistent bead. Baked bread, pear and yeast lees aromas fill the nostrils with some citrus and quince notes also evident. Fine and elegant the palate features pear and citrus fruits over quince like characters. Racy, chalk tinged feel with vivid acidity lending tension to the refreshing finish.

Made with the three traditional grape varieties of Champagne but with some added Pinot Blanc, 60% of the base wine coming from the 2018, 2019 and 2020 vintages. Lemon curd, green apple, white flowers, sea spray, pastry and cream. Yummo. The bubbles are fine and silky, and the mouthfeel and fruit are resonant. I enjoyed it immensely by itself but also drank it with a very large amount of cheese. For only $28 you’re getting some very tasty sparkling wine here.

Made using nutmeg, clove, cinnamon and hand-crushed Dauphine green walnuts harvested at St John’s Day, this tasty provincial specialty is a vermouth-meets-ruby-port kind of aperitif that crosses categories. Deep, ruddy red to umber-brown in colour with earthy, bitter herbal notes pitched against ripe plums, riper red berries and walnuts (the latter lingering at the finish which takes a cue from bitters), Noix de la Saint Jean makes a moreish drinking experience on its own, but you can also pair it with chocolate, nut-based desserts and cheeses such as Roquefort, Blues, Stilton and Fourme d'Ambert. 15% Alc./Vol. Refrigerate after opening.
Notes from the importers.... Nose: On the nose, the dominant aroma is walnuts completed by a more spicy note of spice bread and dried fruit. Palate: On the palate, the aromas of this aperitif are marked by the walnut and nut stain subtly flattered by a spicy note of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Noix de la Saint-Jean is well balanced between acidity and sugars with a good volume on the palate. The astringency of this nut gives this aperitif a good lingering flavour. Its tannins are fine and not very dry at the finish.

Fizz made from Pinot Noir sourced from the Yarra Valley, parcels were fermented discretely and given five months on lees before the secondary fermentation. Dosage is seven grams/litre. A very pale orange pink with notes of florals, redcurrants and spices, with hints of cherries and strawberries. This is a gentle and delightfully elegant style of fizz, with a creamy texture that is finely balanced with a crisp finish. There is a chalky, minerally backing here with a lingering finish. Delicious drinking now and for the next couple of years. Drink 2024-2026.

The Taittinger Vintage Brut is produced exclusively from first press wines, blended from 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir. Grands Cru vineyards make up a significant proportion of the blend at 70%, while the other selected villages are all classified as Premiers Crus. Aged on lees for over 5 years.
Holding well over a pale straw gold tinged base is a gorgeous, plentiful mousse with a very persistent and nibble bead flowing through its core. Classic Champagne aromatics of baked bread, yeast lees and citrus engulf the nostrils followed by some oily toast like notes and faint honeyed cashew scents. Rich, full and creamy textured in the mouth, the palate features concentrated flavours of baked bread, yeast lees, cashew and citrus over a delicate dried honey, oily toast and brioche back drop. Refined airy feel with mouth watering acidity. Finishes long, enveloping and expansive.

President Nixon famously enjoyed Moutai during his visit to China where it's considered the 'national liquor’. Made from red sorghum grain grown in Guizhou (Kweichou) Province, the fermented mash is distilled seven times. Batches are kept separate then matured for years in earthenware jars which allow the alcohol to ‘breathe’. Finally, the distillates are subject to an elaborate vatting process, supervised by a Master Blender to achieve the spirit's unique aroma and flavour.
Often served at state banquets and presented as a diplomatic gift, Moutai's floral / yeasty / grainy flavour has also been compared to soy sauce, while its popularity is such that limited editions have become highly collectable. According to a report by Fortune Magazine, the spirit's "fiery flavour and potential to appreciate in price is driving blistering demand. That in turn has pushed its market value to more than $145 billion, well past British whisky giant Diageo."
This edition is known more commonly as the ‘original’ Moutai, characterized by its distinct flavour and mellow yet pleasant after-taste. The "Flying Fairy" was awarded the honourable title of National Liquor, the highest accolade for any wine or spirit in China. 43% Alc./Vol.

Named after the original Pinot Noir vines planted in 1995 on the property, this wine is crafted from clones 114, 115, and MV6. It has a super-fine and delicate style with concentration and intensity, driven by red fruits with a touch of black. The wine features layers of spice and herbs, with only 5% whole bunch and 25% new oak in this vintage.

The Original naming refers to the 1995 plantings that first went in the ground at Cobaw Ridge but also aptly describes the Cooper family behind the vines.
As with many great wines, the more time spent with it, the more the journey is cinematic, which is particularly apt here. On opening, a seamless, svelte and lighter weight red with dark cherry, caraway seed, Aussie bush elements and white pepper dusted in. The more time open, the more big swirls, the build of savoury elements in hazelnut, garam masala spice, spearmint and amaro-like qualities. The texture opened up somewhat too, more expansive, a spread in the palate on guiding trails of gossamer. There are wines that deliver strict bounds of Olympic performance, precise and at the apex, and then those that build as an expressive performance. The latter here, and we’re better for it. This is the first standalone release from a vineyard planted in 2011, with a density of just under 7000 vines per hectare. It comprises various clones, including 777, Q390-02, Pommard, Able, 115, and MV6. In this vintage, 5% whole bunch and 35% new oak were used. It offers a richer expression compared to the 'Original Black,' emphasizing dark fruits like cherry and plum. The wine has a remarkable density complemented by a touch of spice and savory details. The palate showcases a delicate core with a smooth flow of fruits.

High fidelity, high density, high tension. All happening.
It’s a wine on the edge, and for personal preferences, that’s mostly where I want my wine to be. It keeps you alert, it keeps you seeking out more information. This wine is imbued with fine, elegant pinosity and shows off refined tannin profile and a sense of complexing minerality. The rub is that its a marginal site, a cool place that delivers a nervous freshness at times, and with that mint, Aussie bush/alpine elements that could irk some who approach this wine. I bet most who do know what they’re in for, know the quality potential inherent, and look for the distinct personality even in the more edgier years. Amongst all this, dark cherry, pitch perfect in freshness and bite, some sweet spice too. Just shy of medium weight. Very compelling. Drink 2024 - 2035.

The juniper-infused spirit known as gin has the Netherlands as its spiritual home. Later, England went on to popularise its own 'London Dry', traditionally based on less than a handful of botanicals (juniper, cardamom and coriander). However, the influence of Sri Lanka, Malaysia and other spice islands isn't commonly found, even in contemporary styles. Enter Dutch Gin, founded in 2022 in the Melbourne suburb of Mitcham. Here, botanicals like lemongrass, makrut leaves, chilli, thai basil and ginger are broadening the scope of what gins can taste like. Proprietor, Danny Perera employs a wheat-based spirit which brings a nice smooth mouthfeel to each expression. Step one is to load the still with distillate, then add juniper and dried botanicals to the pot. Once out of the still, the spirits are rested for a couple of weeks to maximise the flavour before diluting to a lower ABV followed by bottling and labelling. Shaken or stirred, Dutch Rules New World Dry gin offers juniper-forward flavours with a citrusy finish for a new everyday favourite. Great in a cocktail or simply with tonic. With an abundance of stock to draw from, Bushmill’s claims the distinction of being the only producer in Ireland capable of annually releasing ultra-rare, high-age statement expressions like this. Originally distilled in the early 1990s, the company began experimenting in the 2000s with re-casking its single malts to enhance the distillery character, although they didn’t have a specific series in mind for these experiments, until now. The venerable 30 year old was aged for 14 years in bourbon barrels and sherry butts before finishing in first-fill Pedro Ximénez sherry casks for another 16 years. Pedro Ximénez (aka PX) is a dark sweet Sherry style that typically contributes rich dried fruit characteristics. Launched to mark the opening of the new Bushmills Causeway Distillery in 2023, this historical bottling is limited to 1500 bottles globally. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Collectable.

Distilled in 1992 and spent its last 16 years of maturation in first-fill PX sherry casks which give this whiskey a nose of dried strawberries, blueberries, raisins, and chocolate-covered toffees. There’s a sticky PX mouthfeel, with prune juice, morello cherry, dried fig, peppery spice, and clove, adding more pronounced prune flesh, dried vine fruits, vanilla essence, and citrus peel notes before a soothing finish of buttered fruitcake with a spicy kick. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com

What’s great about the Canvas wines is that they're well made with an emphasis on drinkability. This joven style is jam-packed with exuberant red fruits, cherry-berry cola, sarsaparilla and those distinct woodsy spices, not from oak – just part of the variety’s DNA. It’s refreshing and vibrant, and the tannins are quite precise and a little textural. Loads of fun. Drink by 2028.

This old vine Grenache was crafted from two blocks on Yalumba’s Tri-Centenary Vineyard, planted in 1949 and 1929 located in the tiny Barossa Valley sub region of Vine Vale. The two blocks were wild fermented separately - the first 40% whole bunch, the second 33% whole bunch fruit. Maturation took place in older French oak puncheons for a period of 6 months.
Dark red core with black shaded edges and a bright red hue. Alluring red to dark raspberry, cherry and red liquorice aromas infused with hints of dried clove and graphite sail through the nostrils followed by some peppered earth end notes. Juicy red to dark raspberry, cherry and liquorice fruits overlay a dried herb and peppered earth back drop. Polished tannins finishing long, fresh and succulent.

Of all the wines in the Yalumba Grenache collection, for me, this is the value pick. A cracking wine which is seriously good buying. The fruit comes from old bush vines which were planted in 1929 and 1949 in the Tri-Centenary Vineyard in Vine Vale. The two blocks were harvested for the wine, with the first seeing 40% whole bunch fermentation and the second 33%. A garnet/crimson colour, the nose is utterly gorgeous. This is Grenache on steroids. Strawberries and cream, florals, bergamot, spices and cherries. Take everything that is good about Grenache and it is jam-packed into this wine. It also offers that typical Grenache tannin mix of silky and sandy. Showing good balance and length, this is a superb example of a top-notch Barossa Grenache. Drink now and for the next eight years. Drink 2024-2032.

The sherry casks are not over-bearing, providing some delicate nuances under these well-matured bourbon malts. I’m having a hard time putting this bottle down and I would wager that you would as well. If you like peated whiskies, and balanced ones at that, then this should be sitting on your shelf. I’m very much intrigued to get my hands on the Bourbon cask and Sherry cask releases from Elements of Islay now. Well played Elements of Islay team.... If this is priced below other Islay malts in your market, it’s a steal and get it on your shelf ASAP. If it’s in the same price range as Ardbeg 10, Port Charlotte 10, Ardbeg Corrie/Oogie/An Oa, then use your discretion. Inspired by the climate and soils of that region, the duo finally found their special place in the limestone-rich soils of Waikari in North Canterbury. From here Mike and Claudia established Pyramid Valley and emerged as NZ pioneers of both biodynamic practices and high-density viticulture. For almost 20 years they inspired and/or challenged all those who came into their orbit. Their minute scale and exceptional dedication to their soils and vines led to some incredible wines being produced. First visiting the vineyard in 2007, Steve Smith MW (then of Craggy Range) was one of many affected by what he describes as one the most compelling and unique vineyards he has ever visited. When Mike’s health went into decline, the Weersings were forced to sell and Smith and his partner Brian Sheth acquired the estate in late 2017. The spectre of Burgundy is writ large over the foundation and ethos of Pyramid Valley, yet we should not expect imitations in terms of the style of the wines. Rather they have their own very distinctive style and energy, and this is precisely as it should be with terroir-driven wines; uniqueness is the point.
Named after the type of grass growing in the vineyard, this densely planted Chardonnay site sits on a southeast-facing, clay-limestone slope, which has been farmed biodynamically from the beginning. Although recently expanded by one hectare, the original plantings cover only a quarter of a hectare. Like its three sibling vineyards, it’s a vineyard farmed to Grand Cru Burgundy standards or higher. Fire is a cooler, rockier site than the Lions Tooth vineyard, and the wine typically shows a tighter, mineral core cloaked by layered, complex and fleshy fruit.

If the Field of Fire were a person, it wouldn't suffer fools gladly. The 2022 Chardonnay is a concentrated, direct and firm wine that knows where it's going and does so with a firm grip on your mouth. Focused, full of drive, it has sinew and sapidity. It is richly fruited - reminiscent of apricots alongside juicy lemon as well as toasted pine nuts, oats and flint. However, its quality is not in its flavors but its texture and power. Where I'm from, we say, 'Shy brains got nowt' and this isn't shy. Drink: 2025 - 2035.

Expansive, succulent white of depth and concentration with pretty lift and complexity from jasmine florals, warm straw, hazelnut and button mushroom savouriness amongst the mandarin, ginger, lime, green apple going on. The supple flow stretches luxuriously through the palate and finishes with a light, building chalky pucker. It’s such a chilled out white, but so much is going on. And gosh it drinks beautifully.

From a scant 0.3ha southeast-facing high-density planting of chardonnay on limestone/clay soils of the home estate. Wonderfully detailed white peach and citrus fruit with wisps of struck flint, soft spice, clotted cream, oyster shell, toasted hazelnuts, white flowers and crushed stone. Plenty of depth and flow on the palate but there's a real sense of sapidity and mouth-watering mineral drive, finishing chalky and uber pure.

Both of Pyramid Valley’s Pinot Noir vineyards are densely planted on clay/limestone slopes. Earth Smoke sits on the richer soils of the two: an expansive, east-facing slope with strong, beautifully structured soils that are comparatively high in limestone. The name here comes from the nickname given to fumitory, a plant of the poppy family that can be found thriving in this 0.85-hectare plot. Although both wines share a familial DNA, the later-picked Earth Smoke is typically the more structured and darker of the two, with more fruit weight to go with its tender, fine tannins.

Having made no Earth Smoke in 2021 due to spring frosts and cool flowering ravaging the yield, it's a welcome return in 2022. Translucent, pure and delicately textured, this Pinot Noir shows a fine hand and the confidence to be hands off. The wine is calm; in the mouth, it gives the impression that a hush has descended. It is attractively scented - full of dried herbs, cherry, festive spice, violets and a hint of smoke. There's plentiful concentration without weight. The tannins are pliant, providing the finest coating for your palate. Drink : 2025 - 2033.

A crispness, a pulse of tart cherry, a crunch of cranberry, some nougat licks and woody spice with sappy pomegranate juice, a touch of hazelnut paste with bergamot tea, sage leaf and dried rosemary amongst the mix of characters here. It’s got volume of intense, granitic minerality and a grumbling swish of pumice-like, almost Italianate texture to tannins amongst the vibrancy of fruit character.

Sourced from a 0.8ha block of biodynamically farmed pinot noir on the Pyramid Valley Waikari estate. A beautiful, complex-smelling wine with brooding dark plum and cherry fruits, cut with spice, blood orange, amaro herbs, raked leaves, pressed wildflowers, twiggy nuance and crushed stone. So calm and composed on the palate with a sapid calcareous cadence, fine, chalky tannin grip and a long, gamey retreat.

Angel Flower is a cooler, more exposed block than Earth Smoke. The shallow soils and north-facing aspect here result in a more floral and aromatic wine, although the weight and shape of the palate have much in common with Pyramid’s other single-site Pinot. The team have also recently planted a little Chardonnay on these soils, recognising its potential as a great white wine terroir.

It feels open weave and pretty with rose hip tea, alpine herbal elements, faint game meat, undergrowth and toasty spice strewn around the place. It slips into every corner of the palate, an attractive, sour-sweet flow of tart cherry dressed up with those savoury elements all sheathed in a web of ultra fine, silty, lacy tannin. It finishes with black tea and truffle and a building, drying, refreshing pucker. Fine, elegant, vibrant and energetic. A triumph for the variety.

From a 0.7ha limestone/clay, north-facing, biodynamically farmed slice of the Pyramid Valley estate in Waikari. A beautifully perfumed, ethereal wine that shows delicate redcurrant, red cherry and raspberry fruits with hints of crushed stone, red flowers, blood orange, clover blossom, sous bois and red apple pastries. There is a lot of light in this wine, all detail and shimmering clarity with a spacious mouthfeel, sapidity to burn and the most graceful of exits. Beautiful drinking.

Nose a little shy at first, then lots of perfumed red fruit emerges - tamarillo and plum, a dash of spice, a lift of blue flowers. The delicate, dancing palate has a surprising intensity of ripe, flowing red fruits, lovely fine, chalky tannins and bright, saline/minerally acidity. Very good length. This is smartly made, with no rough edges but isn’t overly polished. Drink: 2024 - 2032.

Their minute scale and exceptional dedication to their soils and vines led to some incredible wines being produced. First visiting the vineyard in 2007, Steve Smith MW (then of Craggy Range) was one of many affected by what he describes as one the most compelling and unique vineyards he has ever visited. When Mike’s health went into decline, the Weersings were forced to sell and Smith and his partner Brian Sheth acquired the estate in late 2017. The spectre of Burgundy is writ large over the foundation and ethos of Pyramid Valley, yet we should not expect imitations in terms of the style of the wines. Rather they have their own very distinctive style and energy, and this is precisely as it should be with terroir-driven wines; uniqueness is the point.
In 2018, Pyramid Valley became a two-property estate when it purchased the Manata vineyard in Central Otago’s Lowburn sub-region. The team quickly applied their precise viticultural standards to what was already considered one of the greatest sites in the region. In just three years, Paulin and his team have doubled the organic matter in the soil and achieved organic certification through BioGro NZ. They also immediately recognised the potential of the block they now call Snake’s Tongue—a nod to one of the many common names used for blue borage: Viper’s (snake’s) bugloss (ox-tongue). Fermented in an open-top concrete tulip, with 25% whole bunches and as much whole berry as possible, the wine matured in 25% new 500-litre puncheons for 12 months, followed by a further six months in neutral oak before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

It’s a fleshy, deeply flavoured pinot noir with an elegant bent under its more muscular frame. Dark choc-raspberry, liquorice, cranberry, aniseed, some garam masala spice elements, a bit of warm game meat and some rosy, rose hip tea elements. The wine quite grippy and drying in tannin, a little new leather-meets-river-pebble feel here. Bold and savoury hand-in-hand, though the dryer frame may challenge some for expectations.

Lowburn Terrace pinot noir from the Mānatu vineyard. Mid-crimson with red plum and dark cherry fruits cut with spice, citrus blossom, dried orange peel, amaro herbs, pressed wildflowers and crushed rocks. Sleek, savoury and red-fruited on the palate with layers of fine spice and some distant game and amaro tones; tannins super-fine and chalky and a bright, minerally cadence.

The 2022 Snake's Tongue Pinot Noir won't be released until October 2024, so this is definitely a pre-release tasting, but it’s a wonderful insight into what is to come. There’s petrichor, asphalt, graphite, black tea, satsuma plum, cherry flesh and red apple skins. This has the tannic density of the 2021, but there is far more restraint and delicacy in the fruit profile. I love the way this performs in the mouth, with dried ginger, blood orange, red pepper, a hint of sesame seed and orchard fruit. A superb wine of presence and delicacy. Drink: 2024 - 2036.

The second in the Meikle Toir series gets some of its complexity from casks made of Chinquapin oak (Quercus Muehlenbergii) sourced from the Northern Ozark region in Missouri. A subspecies of Quercus Alba, Chinquapin delivers spicy flavours and aromas, so it's probably closer to French oak than American oak when it comes to flavour influence. Or, as The GlenAllachie's Warehouse Manager Lindsay Cormie explains, "The Chinquapin cask itself has the aroma of old leather and cigar smoke, which works wonderfully well with the sweetness derived from the Bourbon casks – the combination of both casks complements our beautifully sweet peat character."
Other reviews... That's right, Glenallachie's own peater, in this case peated to 35ppm peat IN THE DISTILLATE (I've heard). This is how you should pronounce it: 'Mee-Kuhl Tor', Sounds like the name of a Norwegian doom-hard-black-metal band, does it not. Colour: gold. Nose: very modern, very cool, with lots of bacon, sauna oils, and new rubber. It's almost like visiting a car dealership with all these new tyres and all the spent motor oil gathered in the trays. There are many Speyside distilleries that have recently tried peat, including some previously managed by Billy Waller (Benriach), and most have achieved slightly average results in my opinion. That is not the case here, I really like this very... automotive profile. Cars and bacon, nice combination! Mouth: in keeping with this, but with new flavours like burnt lemon tart and worn-out dragster tyre. It's really quite fun; it's far from the first 'Chinkapin oak' from Glenmorangie, do you remember it? A totally non-coastal peat, it's a welcome variation for us. Finish: long and more lemony and spicy, that's the American barrel responding to the peat. Comments: It's a bit like the Fight Club, but indeed, it's fun. Meikle Tòir (pronounced MEE-kuhl tor) is The GlenAllachie’s peated project. The peating levels (PPMs) are pretty high and were taken from the mature 5-year-old whisky. The Original comes matured in 1st Fill Bourbon, Rye and American virgin oak casks, with a spirit PPM level of 35ppm (that's close to something like Lagavulin or Ardbeg). Notably, these whiskies employ mainland peat from St. Fergus (like Ardmore), a flavour which is generally sweeter than that of coastal peat. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Matured in French and American oak barrels, finished in x-port casks, then charcoal filtered to restore its clear appearance, 1800's Cristalino falls somewhere between an Anejo and a Blanco. Bottling at just 35% ABV makes for a featherweight tequila, smooth and accessible with a delicacy and lightness that approaches vodka. Warming peppers and a low-definition waxy-agave character shine through the finish. Use it as a shooter or in Summer cocktails.

Morris enter the massive blended whisky market with an Australian take. Crafted in the famous Rutherglen wine region and matured in the family's x-red wine casks, it employs both malted barley and wheat in the mashbill. Clearly designed for approachability, from the malty nose to the medium-bodied 'blend feel', this bridges a gap between entry level bourbon and single malt, kissing the mouth with a soft lick of vanillan oak, lighter grains playing second fiddle while a delicate peachy fruitiness rounds out with balancing spices. Enjoyed over ice it's a success, but it flattens out with minimal dilution. At the asking price, well worth considering over big brand Scottish blends. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Morris's new blended whisky is one of the least expensive on the Australian market, priced to compete with domestic blends. There’s good grain density on the nose with none of that vodka-like smell apparent in some inexpensive blends, showing good cask influence and excellent integration backed up by nice fruit and a whiff of rubbery smoke. Easy-drinking on the palate but still with plenty of grip, this is absolutely interesting enough to sip on. But in a mixed drink, this whisky would shine, pairing perfectly with dry ginger ale or cola for an Aussie answer to Johnny Double Black. The talented independents 'Gleann Mor Spirits' have got their hands on a mix of Irish whiskeys. Blended and bottled without chill filtration, the grain component was aged in Virgin oak and re-char Bourbon casks. The triple distilled malt was aged in an x-Bourbon barrel, then finished in an Oloroso octave. What you get is an elegant, lightly fruited Irish with slight sherry input and an oily malt character beaming through the vanilla-laced finish. Easy drinking. Tasted from a 30ml sample. 43% Alc./Vol.

Juniper spirit, distilled apricots, and Middle Eastern black limes spend four months together in ex-Pinot Noir barrels from the award-winning Scotchmans Hill winery. The oak enhances the brown sugar flavours of the sweet dried apricots, while the traditionally cured black limes add a salty sour complexity. Grains of Paradise add a sweet butterscotch note with a peppery finish. Serve with aromatic tonic and a slice of lime. The label depicts Rosey, a standard poodle who loved chasing rabbits.
