Based in the village of Chichée, one of the cooler, higher parts of Chablis, Domaine Gilbert Picq has earned a reputation for some of the region’s most incisive and mineral-driven wines. The domaine is now guided by Didier Picq, who has kept faith with a traditional, no-frills approach to vinification. Native yeast drives fermentations, elevage is in stainless steel, and there is no oak to be seen, delivering wines that speak purely of site. The result is classic Chablis in every sense: racy, precise, and full of the stony cut that makes the best wines from this area so thrilling.

"It is rare to find a villages-level delivering this level of quality and it is highly recommended" - Allen Meadows, Burghound

    Other Reviews....
At the moment, the 2022 Chablis Au Dessus des Carrières is stoic on the nose compared to Picq's other cuvées, despite both of us giving our glasses vigorous swirls. The palate is where the action is: great concentration and depth, hints of white peach and nectarine, the power loaded at its back end. Give this two or three years in bottle. Drink 2026-2040.

    Neal Martin - Vinous

This could easily pass for a very good Vaillons with its aromas of white pepper, cool mineral reduction and airy floral and oyster shell nuances. There is both excellent volume and punch to the intensely mineral-driven medium weight flavors that conclude in a chiseled, moderately austere and beautifully long finish. It is rare to find a villages-level delivering this level of quality and it is highly recommended, plus it should repay even extended keeping. Buy it. Drink through 2028+.

Bottled March. Pale lemon yellow. A truly beautiful nose, elegance with intensity, a little flesh up front, crystalline minerality behind, and a delicious aftertaste. This has me dancing – probably not a good thing! Drink from 2025-2034.

Glendronach Ode To The Valley Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $139. 99
    Bottle
    $1679.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46.2%

Part of the core range that launched in late 2024. It includes three NAS expressions highlighting sherry maturation. Ode to the Valley uses sherry casks with Ruby Port casks from Portugal in support. The others are Ode to the Embers, a peated expression matured in Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez casks, and Ode to the Dark, which relies on Pedro Ximénez casks. 46.2% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Nose: more Port than sherry, which shows as a mustiness. Rather thin and tart fruity notes, such as red plums, cranberries and raisins, along with orange peels. Underneath it shows an alcoholic note and young wood. Then muesli, a certain sour earthy note and roselle tea. Mouth: still high on alcohol, with hints of raspberry eau-de-vie and plum wine, more roselle and cranberry juice. Some darker blackberry underneath, as well as some cold coffee, cocoa and a slightly bloated vegetal note. Then hints of ginger and plain malty notes too. Finish: quite short, with more sour berries, wood spice and hints of cocoa. A very basic malt that is lacking weight and feels a bit diluted, allowing the sourness and alcohol to shine through. Too superficial and not particularly flattering for a series that wants to pay tribute to sherry casks. - whiskynotes.be

...when we are presented with these new marketing-led NAS whiskies, we almost feel sorry for the distillery, and because we find glimpses of "the good old days" in them, we want to like them but realistically we have to just come to the conclusion that they are too young and too expensive for what they are. Unfortunately that's how Brown-Forman "positioned" the range, and hence it'll just sit on the shelves, together with the now vastly overpriced 15 and 18. A shame, because Glendronach used to be my favourite distillery. - whiskybase.com

Cadenheads Original Collection Ben Nevis 11 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $179. 99
    Bottle
    $2159.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

The importer notes "Ben Nevis has many faces, as I sometimes think that when you get a new bottle from this super distillery, you really don’t quite know what you are going to get."

We second those comments. He adds, "With the new 2024 bottling from Cadenhead, the guessing game continues as this all ex bourbon cask mature example is all floral and fruity on the nose, but on the palate that unique oiliness is very much evident." Official notes read, “Creamy. Wholegrain cereal, malty, gooseberries. Kiwi skin, flint notes, salted caramel, barley sugar & barley drops.” 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Medium-bodied, with the rowan berries making a return alongside a slightly dirty, earthy character. Rich and rounded with a smooth undercurrent of vanilla. Medium-long, still carrying some of that earthy “dirtiness,” but now turning sugary sweet. Vanilla and herbs in the background. A whisky with a rugged charm. - whiskysaga.com

Cadenheads Original Collection Girvan 33 Year Old Single Grain Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Lowlands, SCOTLAND
    $320. 00
    Bottle
    $3840.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Good reports from various sources on this single grain from the giant Grant's facility in the Lowlands. Official notes read, “Chewy. Brandy snaps, marzipan, carrot cake.  Coconut macaroon, orange essence, butterscotch”. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... “The cereals are very varied and intense, ranging from airy oats to sweet corn, crispy wheat grains and puffed rice, malted barley, rustic rye, millet. Brioche, all coated in caramel. Ethereal almond, cloud of milk. On the palate, vanilla intervenes, it is slightly fruity but the cereals remain predominant. Very light spices, mirabelle plums and green apples. Deep finish, but could be longer, custard, sponge cake, white grapes, fudge, resin, cinnamon. Very good grain whisky, I still regret that the alcohol content is not a little higher, it is a little light on the palate”. - whiskybase.com

Other reviews... A release from August of this year [2024]. Colour: gold. Nose: bursting with oranges – if you’re as fond of them as I am, you’re in for a treat. Jaffa cakes, honey, a touch of olive oil (Spanish, of course) and freshly peeled oranges. There’s also a hint of macarons and amaretti biscuits. Honestly, on the nose, it’s wonderfully done, but that’s often the case with good palo cortado. Mouth: yes, very good, especially considering the relatively modest price. Chocolate, walnut cake (that’s quite pronounced), turrón, hazelnut spread and peanut butter, roasted pecans… All of it works like a charm. Finish: perhaps its slightly weaker point, with some flinty notes, leather, and a touch of bitter orange taking the lead at this stage. Comments: frankly, this is a lovely little Tully. By the way, there is indeed a 'Tully' distillery in Washington State, USA, though I don’t believe I’ve tried anything from them. And let’s not forget Grandtully in Scotland, though that one closed back in 1910. 86 points - whiskyfun.com

...Taste: It’s not without some oak and the accompanying spices you’d expect, but there’s also a buttery sweetness, dried figs and just a tinge of papaya. Also fennel. Not the most complex though. Finish: Short to medium. Lingering spices, cocoa powder and nutmeg. Not the most expressive single malt, and the oak influence isn’t insubstantial either. A decent drinker that nonetheless doesn’t quite capture the imagination. - wordsofwhisky.com

Cadenheads Original Collection Ardmore 11 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $179. 99
    Bottle
    $2159.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Independent bottlings of Ardmore are invariably more exciting than official releases, and as followers of this make will know, the distillery is not shy in using a good dose of peat. At Cadenheads, this bottling was a big favourite with the tasting panel who described it as "a bit of a beast." They say there's also a layer of sweetness, demonstrated by strawberry jam, wine gums and caramelised sugar notes, no doubt derived from the lengthy cask finishing which was x-Ruby Port. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... “Less robust and rugged than I was expecting. Ashy on the finish but faintly, more cracked black pepper, a coal bunker, figs, tobacco and ground clove. Flashes of aniseed midway, dark chocolate, baked potato skin. A gentle smokiness throughout, assisted by bacon fat, embers and orange zest. Wholemeal bread and a farm yard vibe... Fresh manure that hits the spot”. - dramface.com

One in a trio that make up Glen Grant’s “Glasshouse Collection.” At the time of writing, these are the oldest expressions in the distillery’s permanent lineup. The 25yo comes matured in oloroso sherry casks and x-bourbon barrels, bottled at 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Part of the distillery’s Glass House Collection, which also includes a 30 year old and a 21 year old. Earthy and dry, with cut grass aromas at first, then licorice, underripe banana, and orange peel. Sweeter and viscous on the palate, with apples, plums, vanilla, a hint of orange, baking spice, and black pepper. The finish is medium-length, with more vanilla. Sweet, fresh, syrupy, delicious, and lively for a 25 year old. 93 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...Dehydrated pear, apple juice, light baking spice, and freshly baked challah rolls start off the nose. It’s quite light in character, with touches of oak and a tiny bit of pine sap, but still fragrant enough for individual scents to stick around long enough in the nostrils. Salty taffy develops over the course of minutes, adding polite sweetness and salinity that pairs well with the wood scents. The whisky is comparatively richer at first sip, which is both highly viscous and richly spiced, like milk caramel infused with nutmeg, vanilla extract, and mint sprigs. Tart green apple, orange bitters, and unripe pineapple form a backbone of fruit that builds toward the midpalate. Taken together, they’re a nice foil to the spicy sweetness, the whisky never quite settling fully into sweet or sour but existing harmoniously at their intersection throughout most parts of the sip. The finish turns toward macchiato and baking chocolate, topped with a barely-there layer of thin, woody caramel. A final pop of peeled apple skins and campfire embers wraps things up with a kiss of cooked fruit. This begs return after return to the glass and nearly warranted an even higher score. - drinkhacker.com

Pinot noir sourced from the Elsewhere vineyard in the Huon Valley; 20% whole bunch this year, matured for 10 months in French oak (30% new). An uptick in new oak this year for those playing at home, but the balance is bang on once again. Red cherry, raspberry and cranberry notes with medina spice, amaro, char siu, Chinese barbecue joint, twiggy bits and bobs and shiitake. Stony and composed on the palate. This has powdered riverstone tannins, a briny driveline and a stony finish that shows great tension and resolve. Nice one. Drink by 2036.

This too is dry-grown on the Elsewhere Vineyard in the Huon Valley. 175 dozen were produced. 20% whole bunches and 30% new oak.
This wine is still settling, as if still rehearsing its lines and/or songs, but the set list that it has at its disposal is killer. The depth of fruit here, the inbuilt complexity, the wave of perfectly formed tannin and extension through the finish; every aspect is top notch. It tastes of both black cherries and red plums, cedarwood and cream, but it’s the tobacco and undergrowth characters humming away in the background and that rumble of earth-shot tannin that really draws you in. Be patient. This will be excellent. Drink 2027-2033+

Slightly more expressive than its Pot Still sibling, the aroma conjures frail scents of balsa wood, hay, poached pears in wine, green apples and light vanilla. It's also a more delicately textured whiskey suggesting flavours of sweet cereals and stewed orchard fruits, building succulence, ending crunchy, lipsmacking and gently spiced. Like a lightly fruited Speysider, but of an altogether softer variety. 46% Alc./vol. Non-chill filtered.

Other reviews... Light gold color. Aromas and flavors of partially baked bread dough, birch soda and cherry wood, under ripe musk melon, and black pepper with a satiny, lively, dry medium body and a peppery, interesting, medium-length finish displaying notes of pepper and baking spices in fresh bread dough, tart green fruit, dark honey, and parchment. Very tasty with loads of potential demanding your attention to pick out all of its complexities. 89 points - tastings.com

This single malt opens with a punchy and pungent nose, leading with barnyard, wet hay, and honey. Over time, these aromas drift away and chamomile tea with honey, spearmint, hot pretzels, and wildflowers emerge. The palate is complex, too. Sweet tea, marzipan, and sweet granola stand on the front lines, with black pepper, faint cayenne, and forest floor reinforcement. The finish is long, rich, and floral, fading to hay and cereal grains. 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Notes from the producers... Nose: A Gentle nose with notes of Toasted Oak, Citrus and Coconut, resolving to Apple Sponge.Taste: At first Malt and Fruit dominate with Mango and a hint of ripe Banana. Then Toffee Apple fading to Crème Brûlée. Finish: Long finish with notes of Apple Custard and a hint of Cloves.

Combining intensity with thrilling verve is a bit of a trademark here, with all the winemaking tools that make chardonnay so compelling, but each exercised with due restraint. White nectarine, lemon curd and yellow grapefruit are accented with salted praline, roasted hazelnuts and crystallised ginger, the balance of textural sway, fruit intensity, acid verve and fine pithiness are à point, the quiet power of it impressive. It’s fine and flinty, an almond richness with bright and tangy mixed citrus, a bit of electricity about it, though it’s still cool, calm and collected. The finish has lime and lime rind bite, and heaps good length. A beautiful wine. It’s a toss up between 95 and 96 points for me, though the length, intensity and overall class gets me over the line. A rich, succulent GSM that shows plenty of torque.

Named as a tribute to the legendary Barossa Vignerons who pioneered the planting of the old treasured vineyards, the Grenache fruit is the ‘soul’ of this blend and is predominately sourced from an exceptionally low yielding 60+ year-old Light Pass Vineyard. It was originally planted by the Kennedy Family, with ownership eventually being passed onto the charismatic Leo ‘Joe’ KENNEDY who nurtured the vines for many years, selling his prized fruit to local winemakers.
A blend of 46% Grenache, 35% Shiraz and 19% Mourvedre sourced from a wide variety of Barossa’s sub districts with the vines aged between 31 to 98 years old. Maturation took place in a mixture of seasoned oak hogsheads and puncheons for a period 12 months.
Deep dark red black colour with a dark red hue. Elevating their way out of the glass with plenty of intensity are aromas of dark raspberry, liquorice and dark plum followed by some vanillin spice, hints of blueberry and subtle earth. Rich, succulent dark raspberry, liquorice, plum and blueberry fruits glide across the palate with a velvety feel. Spicy vanilla, earthy dried herb and pepper elements ensue. Aged mainly in third- and fourth-fill American and French oak, with some new barrels, for 16 months. There’s something reassuringly classic about this, about the silky cascade of brambly forest fruits, the inflections of chocolate and humus-rich earth, some iodine and violet, the light sprinkling of warm spices and dried herbs. Yes, it’s familiar, but it’s not old fashioned, with balance à point and oak a present but discreet chaperone. Tradition with a modern lens, and delicious drinking. Drink by 2033.

From the world renowned Watervale district, this scrumptious Riesling is a blend of three vineyard sites, one planted in the 1930’s and the other two dating back 20 to 30 years. 2025 was one of the driest, warmest, and earliest vintages that the Clare Valley has ever seen resulting in low yields but exceptional fruit quality.

Some of the vines used for this very youthful but delightfully fresh Riesling from the Watervale sub-region date back to the 1930s. Pale lemon in colour, this is beautifully perfumed, with notes of lemon curd, spices, florals and grapefruit. A fine line of minerals and river stones in the background as support. There is fine balance and bright acidity, which runs the full journey. Enjoy over the next ten to fifteen years. Stunning value. Drink 2025-2040.

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Bacia is deep and complex, mixing black cherries with cedar box, autumnal spice, mentholated herbs and a dusting of cocoa. This speaks in bass tones, with dark, saturating red fruit and minerals excited by a core of brisk acidity and a balsamic tinge that defines the close. It finishes with tremendous length, staining and intense, leaving a primary concentration of cranberry and blackberry to mingle with sweet tannins. The 2019 Bacia is a bombshell beauty. This wine has not yet been released, but it will hit foreign markets in March or April 2025 and the Italian market in September 2025. The Stella di Campalto 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Podere S. Giuseppe Aria is named after the Italian word for "air." The reason for this choice could be linked to the elegantly open-knit texture of the wine that is amply interspaced with layers of dark fruit, spice and crushed stone. That mineral signature is beautiful. Stella di Campalto says the name pays tribute to the manner in which each of her vineyard plots filters air in its own distinct manner, resulting in a unique ripeness. This wine is bright and weightless with a subtle flurry of redcurrant and iris root. The wine does not have the same tannic structure that you get in the Bosco, and for that reason, it remains feather-light and, yes, airy. Drink 2027-2040.

Glenfiddich's famous 'Special Reserve Pure Malt', now discontinued, was the whisky that introduced and popularised the bottling of Single Malts to the world. While to some this "No Age Statement" blend would seem to be a vatted malt, it is still considered a "Single Malt" because its components all come from the same distillery. This could be your last chance to find out what whisky writer, Jim Murray was raving about. 43% Alc./Vol.

Having only been founded in 1964, this bottling of Tomintoul was produced after a large expansion of their production capability. Two more stills were added after being purchased by Scottish & Universal Investment Trust in 1973. Wonderfully intense and mouth watering with plentiful textural volume counterpointed by shimmering acidity.

Kanta Riesling by Egon Müller is a unique winemaking partnership where German tradition and precision meets the premium, cool climate fruit from the Adelaide Hills. Fruit is sourced from the Argyle Vineyard, a high altitude Adelaide Hills site that sits over 400m above sea level and is flecked with traces of iron stone. Rejuvenated in 1999, the original plantings date back to the 1840’s making them some of the oldest vines in South Australia.

Nosing offers up aromas of red apple skin, lime and honeysuckle with some orange blossom and flinty mineral notes also evident. Intensely flint with stacks of wild herb aromas, this is a powerful dry riesling that is very straight on the medium- to full-bodied palate. Very focused with a compact, stony core, this has excellent concentration and precision in the long, driving finish. From organically grown grapes with FairChoice certification. Drink or hold.

Gunderloch's 2023 Rothenberg Nackenheim Riesling VDP.GG impresses with a deep, very clear and terroir-influenced nose of Rotliegend rock, along with elegant fruit aromas of ripe stone fruit and herbal-spicy notes. Gentle and elegant on the palate, dense and balanced and juicy, carried by elegant, ripe acidity, this Rothenberg develops a concentrated and long-lasting finish that reflects the warm vintage as well as the good water supply. It is persistently salty, with citrusy freshness in the complex aftertaste. Tasted at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in Wiesbaden in August 2024. Drink 2025-2050.

The 2023 Riesling Nackenheimer Rothenberg Grosses Gewächs still rings with the finest flinty reduction on the nose. Underneath comes a gorgeous streak of pink grapefruit peel, lifted, serene and almost heady with crushed lemongrass and lemon balm. The palate is buffered but shows a clear vein of agile fluidity and serene, sleek, dynamic movement. Leaving gorgeous traces of stony, irony, savory saltiness and unfolding with Seville orange and tangerine, it’s layered, beautiful, soothing, refreshing and long. Citrus zest lingers on the finish. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2060.

This stunning expression of the great Rothenberg site is still very tightly wound, the flintiness very pronounced in the first moment, the delicate white peach and wild berry fruit expanding like a rosebud slowly opening during a period of cool weather. Underplayed power and concentration on the extremely precise, medium-bodied palate. Tremendous finesse in the very long, filigreed finish. From organically grown grapes with FairChoice certification. Drink or hold.

2023 Donnhoff Dellchen Riesling Grosses Gewachs
    Nahe, GERMANY
    $215. 00
    Bottle
    $2580.00 Dozen
    ABV: 12.5%
    Closure: Cork

Donnhoff make the best wines in the Nahe region, and some of the finest anywhere in the world. While it was Helmut Donnhoff that launched this estate to worldwide attention, winemaking duties are now managed by his talented son, Cornelius. There's a deep understanding of the grand wines and grand vineyards that's been handed down through the generations. And given the enormous technical proficiency Cornelius has demonstrated so far, Donnhoff is sure to be at the top of the vinous hierarchy for years to come.

At least since the magical 2020 vintage, this grand cru is becoming another Dönnhoff (and Nahe) icon wine next to the estate's Hermannshöhle GG. The 2023 Norheimer Dellchen Riesling trocken GG is bright and clear on the elegant and finely juicy as well as spontaneously inviting nose that indicates perfectly ripe and healthy Riesling fruit that is fully intermingled with the terroir-driven flinty notes. Perfectly round and finessed on the palate, this is a full-bodied, dense and finely juicy, then utterly saline and savory as well as buoyant Dellchen that pairs purity with intensity and a long, complex and promising finish. This is superbly balanced and full of joy. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in August and October 2024. Drink 2028-2055.

The 2023 Riesling Norheimer Dellchen Grosses Gewächs is grown on porphyry with a shale cover. The vines are sheltered and have underground aquifers. A tender lemon zest note holds traces of white summer blossom, wet stone and a touch of chervil—beautifully tender. The slender palate, likewise, is lemon-dominated, bright, sunny and friendly in its citric smile. The 2023 is agile, tingling and slender with a subtle stoniness. This is as wonderfully pervasive, tart and palate-cleansing as lemon sorbet. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2060.

This dry riesling has a hypnotic beauty that leaves no doubt how this wine redefines what peachy means in the context of this grape variety. As it aerates, a wealth of wild berry and flower nuances develop and expand. Given the mind-bending concentration of this wine, it is staggeringly fresh and absolutely precise. Then comes the finish, which is like a prima ballerina dancing on pointe off into the distance. Drink from release.

The 2023 Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg Riesling trocken GG is beautifully pure, clear and bright or even coolish on the deep and complex nose that is still remarkably discreet but refined for this warm, volcanic terroir and offers elegant notes of melting stones and domestic seed fruits. Round, refined and elegant on the palate, this is a generous, juicy and fruity Riesling with fine tannins and a long, intense, spicy and aromatic, finely saline and mineral finish. This is a mouth-filling, complex and textured Riesling with crunchy tannins on the finish. It's a superb 2023 that should develop beautifully over the years in the bottle. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in August and October 2024. Drink 2025-2050.

The 2023 Riesling Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg Felsentürmchen Grosses Gewächs is picked in the fully south-facing site of porphyry and melaphyr. Cornelius Dönnhoff says this is the most challenging site to work, simply because the stones are so hard and unforgiving, retaining almost no water. Thus, a year like 2023 was brilliant for this site. It is always the first GG site to be harvested because the rock retains heat from the day. Tender reduction still casts a flinty spell on the nose. Lovely savor implies crushed citrus foliage merged into iron oxide on the nose. The palate is taut, citric, bright with immense linearity, moving with absolute ease and direction, with energy and punch, towards a zesty, cool finish, long, sustained, all with savor and saltiness. The 2023 is a total joy of clarity, direction and stony poise. This is so elegant, so slender, so powerful, and no, this is not a contradiction. (Bone-dry) Drink 2034-2070.

Radically smoky and massively structured in spite of being only medium-bodied, this astonishingly dry riesling expresses the personality of this volcanic site with great authority and precision. So much spice, structure and hardness in the positive sense, meaning that this is not a wine for the faint of heart. Massive power in the imposing finish, yet absolutely clean and bright. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Wehlener Sonnenuhr GG Alte Reben is clear and coolish on the subtly flinty or smoky, (blue/gray) slate-driven and lemony nose that is rather discreet given the ancient age of most of the vines but very deep on the other hand. Round, lush and savory on the palate, this is a full-bodied, tight, still very young and rather farouche Sonnenuhr that can be irresistibly charming in its youth. However, the 2023 remains shy in flavors, whereas it remains seriously complex and persistent in structure and terroir expression. The 2023 is a rich and salivating, still tannic but also concentrated long-distance runner from one of the most famous sites along the Mosel River. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in December 2024. Drink 2028-2055.

The 2023 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Alte Reben Grosses Gewächs presents slate and lemon zest on the nose, promising chiseled elegance. The palate is immensely elegant and fine-boned. It's streamlined, precise and stony, with lemon juiciness driving deep into the stone, leaving a statuesque feel. Drink 2028-2060.

The 2023 Ürziger Würzgarten GG Alte Reben represents the impressively steep, red-colored, iron-rich cru perfectly well on the fragrant, very elegant, deep, intense and complex nose that is pure, fresh and refined but also tropical, saline and smoky. Round and crystalline on the palate, this is a full-bodied, intense and elegant, deeply structured but also generous and lush, nevertheless precise and saline Würzgarten with class and style. 12.5% stated alcohol. From the ferrous red slate soils of this very steep vineyard next to the Prälat, the 2023 Erdener Treppchen GG Alte Reben opens clear, deep, fresh and intense yet also refined on the elegant nose that intermingles delicate slate and intense saline notes with concentrated and spicy Riesling aromas without becoming too fruity. Mouth-filling, saline and highly refined on the palate, this is an elegant but tight and very complex, intense, long und textural Treppchen with a sustainable and layered finish that exhibits mineral and herbal flavors as well as great and complex intensity that is sourced from the terroir and transported by the deep roots of the ancient vines. The 2023 Treppchen is a highlight of the vintage in Loosen's portfolio and most probably among all the Grosses Gewächs Rieslings from the Middle Mosel. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. The 2023 Riesling Erdener Treppchen Alte Reben Grosses Gewächs tingles with tangerine peel notes and an ethereal lift. An amazingly minerally dry Mosel riesling that seems to descend into your glass from the heavens like an angel. Incredible wildflower and peach intensity, and yet this is very elegant and subtle on the medium-bodied palate. What fantastic precision at the extremely long finish. Great aging potential. 2023 Gibson The Dirtman Shiraz

    $359.88 Dozen
    ABV: 14.2%

Gibson Wines was founded in 1996 by Rob Gibson—viticulturist, geologist, and winemaker—whose “prospector’s spirit” continues to shape the family-run estate today. Together with wife Anne and son Adam, Rob champions wines that are proudly Dirtborn, expressive of Barossa’s diverse soils and heritage. The winery’s home is in Light Pass, northern Barossa, where vineyards surround an 1850s blacksmith’s cottage. Here, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Fiano are grown, including parcels trained on the innovative Gibson–Schulz trellis system co-invented by Rob. Light Pass, at 280m elevation, has a long history of viticulture dating back to German settlers of the 1830s and 1840s. The family also farms Burkes Hill in Eden Valley, an old-vine Shiraz and Riesling site, further deepening Gibson’s connection to Barossa and its surrounds.

The 2023 Dirtman Shiraz captures both the generosity of Barossa Valley fruit (78%) and the finesse of cooler Eden Valley sites (22%). Above-average winter rains followed by a mild, even ripening season produced fruit of purity and balance, with deep concentration and fine structure. Named after founder Rob Gibson—geologist, viticulturist, and winemaker—the Dirtman reflects his hands-on approach, walking every vineyard row and making picking decisions vine by vine. The wine delivers layers of ripe plum and blackberry framed by toasty oak, brown spice, and dark chocolate. Plush yet structured, with persistent tannins and a savoury backbone, it is both immediately compelling and built for graceful aging.
